WEEKEND TV HOT FILM PICKS!
Check out my guide to the top films on TV this weekend and the best of the rest. Enjoy!
LATE FRIDAY 21st JULY
HOT PICKS!
Film4 @ 2240 Sexy Beast (2000) ****
After recently watching Jonathan Glazer’s impressive and surreal film Under the Skin for about the 5th time, it’s no better time to catch up on one of his earlier works. In Sexy Beast we follow Ray Winstone’s Gary, a former gangster who has retired from his old criminal life. He has chosen to live out his new life in sunny Spain. His comfortable new life is dramatically interrupted as an interesting character Don - played to intimidating perfection by Sir Ben Kingsley - tracks him down and pays him a home visit. Kingsley is fantastically versatile but here you will see him as you have never seen him before, an intense, angry and downright nasty piece of work. This film is great to look at with a palpable tension running through it. Glazer’s style is evident in this early work. A must see.
Film4 @ 0025 Cheap Thrills (2013) ****
Patrick Healy (The Innkeepers) is Craig Daniels - a family man who has lost his job and facing eviction. Down on luck and money he goes to a bar and bumps into an old school friend. Whilst drowning his sorrows and catching up they meet a wealthy couple and are offered the chance to earn some quick and easy cash for completing some dares, evidently to their amusement as money appears no object to them. From here the stakes and cash amounts get higher and higher as they are asked to do more and more questionable acts. It’s interesting as you as a viewer wonder where you would stop in the ever increasing list of depravity they complete for increasingly high amounts of money.
Darkly funny in parts and equally vile and serious in others Cheap Thrills somehow has a decent balance between them both to keep this from being either farcical or completely unbelievable.
It’s a solid debut feature from E.L. Katz that has a tight and punchy script and a couple of interesting characters, namely Healy’s and David Koechner’s who are by far the strongest 2 in our small cast. Sara Paxton (also from The Innkeepers) looked amazing in this role - but that was about it - her presence was limited to just looking great. Ethan Embry’s character was less developed than perhaps it needed but served his purpose well.
Considering its dark morally questionable content, dare I say it - this was a lot of fun. With some well-placed gore and shocks around the constantly twisting and turning story this bat shit crazy horror comedy works really well. A great film to watch with a group of friends with a load of beers.

SATURDAY 22nd JULY
HOT PICKS!
TCM @ 2100 True Romance (1993) *****
If you haven’t seen True Romance then - YOU MUST! How about this for a cast: Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette, Dennis Hopper, Val Kilmer, Brad Pitt, Gary Oldman, Christopher Walken, Samuel L. Jackson, need I go on? Written by Tarantino and Directed by the late and great Tony Scott (Enemy of the State, Top Gun) this complicated and sometimes violent story twists and turns beautifully and deals with multiple plots with seamless and amazing skill. Clarence (Slater), a loner comic store employee, falls in love with a beautiful prostitute (Arquette) who he marries. As he tries to reason with her pimp to release her from service, things take a turn for trouble, leading them deep into the dangerous mob underworld. The fantastic fame filled cast, each with independently brilliant performances give additional clout to an already strong film. This is quite simply a joy to watch. There are so many positive things to say about this film I just don’t even know where to start. It is certainly one of my all-time favourites. Watch this.
BBC2 @ 2345 Cosmopolis (2012) ****
Such beautiful language and perfectly executed dialogue from a minimal yet expert cast. Combined with the equally splendid direction from Cronenberg, this is a surprise success of 2012. Look forward to watching this again as I feel I will be able to concentrate more on the dialogue and stop trying to figure out what the hell was going on - which you too will no doubt be frustrated with, pulling your hair out as the credits roll. Certainly not one for those who like closure but rewarding if you like a challenge. Robert Pattinson is a billionaire taking a trip in his Limo to get a haircut, his journey takes us on a bizarre trip through the various intimacies and relationships he has along the way.
Film4 @ 0105 Sleepy Hollow (2013) ****
This is one of the few post Batman and Edward Scissorhands Tim Burton films I can stomach. It’s certainly very accommodating to his style. A visually rich affair. Each and every scene has such lavish attention and is so textured it really makes his fairy tale world come to life. Here Burton manages to make a horror film that is not really that horrifying, some gore here and well placed splatter there are offset by the quirky characters and their comedy glances and expressions. Flying the Burton flag, as always, is none other than Johnny Depp in the lead role as Police investigator, Ichabod Crane. He is sent to the small town of Sleepy Hollow to investigate a string of murders where the victims have all had their heads chopped off. A stellar cast including the great Michael Gambon and kudos also goes to the lovely Christina Ricci. This is such a visually stunning film with a great cast and very effective score that you’ll be able to forgive the odd clunkiness of the story and get lost in the beautifully foggy fairy tale backdrop of Sleepy Hollow.
Best of the rest:
5* @ 1105 Wayne's World (1992) ****
TCM @ 1210 Rio Bravo (1959) ****

ITV1 @ 2000 The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012) ***

TCM @ 2330 Enter the Dragon (1973) ****
SUNDAY 23rd JULY
HOT PICKS!
Syfy @ 2100 Constantine (2005) ****
Now here’s a comic book adaption that doesn’t feel like one - and that is part of its charm. Keanu Reeves is John Constantine a sarcastic, smoking, black-tie-wearing man on the edge…. the edge of death with a ticket straight to hell. He has a gift which he feels is a curse. The ability to see past this mortal realm. He can see the dead, demons, angels, pretty much all things other worldly and he chooses to spend his time providing some kind of service to human kind, dispatching demons and exorcising evil. In tow is his trusty and annoying driver / sidekick played to irritating levels beyond comprehension by Shia LaBeouf. His insistence of saying “John” in every sentence that escapes his annoying lips almost drove me over the edge, but fortunately his character was a side-line and remained relatively unexplored. Lucky escape. There are some other characters of more merit - We have Tilda Swinton’s Angel Gabriel who is wonderful on screen but sadly has very little screen time - the same goes for Peter Stormare’s Lucifer whose introduction and physical presence was a very interesting and impressive vision.
The film rockets along at a decent pace with plenty going on but it never seems to lose itself even though the subject matter has the audience taking leaps and bounds into the unknown around every corner. Fantastic effects for 2005 and a storming soundtrack - especially with A Perfect Circle’s “Passive” getting decent air time. It’s been far too long since I last saw Constantine and I’m very glad I revisited it.
TCM @ 2310 Looper (2012) *****
A thoroughly enjoyable Sci-Fi feast from the director who brought us the outstanding Brick, the little-too-overblown-but-still-decent The Brothers Bloom and is at the helm for Star Wars Episode VIII. In his third outing Rian Johnson has bigger names, a bigger budget and way bigger ambition. Looper really is a good contender to be up there in the list of best films of 2012 with strengths, qualities and conviction that play out this paradox filled plot with style. I accepted the bizarre and very limited use of Time Travel by the future mob, as with all time travel films there is always a certain amount of assumptions and as the film progressed I realised the audience has to dismiss a lot of the why’s, what if’s and but’s, but Johnson makes it easy to simply “go with the flow” with a detailed and immersive story.
My second, third and fourth viewing have been even more enjoyable than the first I fail to see any real problems with this film. Emily Blunt did a sterling job as Sara. The young Pierce Gagnon who played Cid was also a great find.
Overall, this is a fantastic film and immediately cries out for another viewing. Complicated, complex and unpredictable, Johnson has really pulled out all the stops here.
BBC2 @ 2345 The Skin I Live in (2011) ****
I’d never heard of Almodovar prior to seeing this film, I knew nothing of his films or his reputation, I also know very little as to what this film was about - and this is the very best way to enter into this film. I was totally blown away by this dark fairy-tale. Every single frame is beautiful. This was obviously a very talented director I had been ignorant to.
The Skin I Live In follows Antonio Banderas as Dr. Robert Ledgard - a plastic surgeon who ever since his wife was burned in a car crash attempts to cultivate the perfect skin… all he needs is a guinea pig for his twisted obsession.
A thriller, a horror - it’s pretty much both but its sheer twisted beauty takes it somewhere beyond. This film became one of my favourite films of 2011 - a year full to the brim with quality films. This is the perfect way to introduce yourself to Almodovar, and if you already know him then you’ll be no doubt already planning an anticipated re-watch of this bizarrely twisted tale.
Best of the rest:
Syfy @ 1440 Robot Overlords (2014) ***
Film4 @ 1715 Titanic (1997) ****
C5 @ 1735 Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (1994) ****
Sony @ 1825 Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) ****
Syfy @ 1900 The Last Starfighter (1984) ****
ITV1 @ 1930 Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005) ****
BBC2 @ 2200 Maps to the Stars (2014) ****
E4 @ 2200 Sinister (2012) ***
C4 @ 2305 Kingdom of Heaven (2005) ***
Film4 @ 0110 Conspirators of Pleasure (1986) ****

Dr. Pride has submitted a request to take SCP - 231-4B on a romantic date for research purposes. The document has an attachment, a rose that is very loosely taped onto the paper.
Another document is attached with the words, "Samuel if you hide this request I'll eff ur mom."
The funniest part is you believe I'm gonna approve this one Pride, no you can't take SCP-231-4B to a damn date, keep doing this and I'm going to castrate you. I said it once, I will say it again. I. Will. Castrate. You. -Dr. Samuel Gagnon
