Today’s Asian character is Dr. Mina Liao from Overwatch!

Sorta really ecstatic about this design choice for Aurora, because I had planned the EXACT same thing for my s/i, Synthia. Normally I'd be really upset about my idea being copied, but this time it shows my idea was plot-consistent! I wrote that Synthia gains a special faceplate, purely for cosmetic reasons, based on a theater mask she saw, and that Dr. Liao gave it to her. And now I can imagine that exchange when she requests that and Liao's like 🥺 remembering her older creation. I think the two would develop a really close bond.

Words cannot describe how much I love this being canon. Cause whether or not you ship Liassidy, you cannot deny that there is a lot of trust between Cassidy and Mina. Cassidy keeping Mina's goals with Echo a secret from Reyes, speaks volumes, not only due to the context of Moira being recently hired, most likely damaging the trust Cassidy had in Reyes, but also because Cassidy would know who Mina Liao is, know her hand in the Crisis, something he was heavily effected by.

For him to know all that and not only understand what Mina is doing with Echo, not only is he keeping it a secret, but to also help Echo. It speaks volumes on his character.

And for Mina, she was very obviously deeply affected by Aroura's death, she likens it to loosing a child. It's something she was still struggling with while making Echo. Yet Cassidy was able to make her laugh, was able to make her see the things she missed with Echo's creation, he helped give her hope again.

They really helped each other so much and I wish we had more of a perspective on Cassidy's thoughts on his time with Liao. He obviously the only person alive who knows Echo's full potential, knows how Mina felt about everything, I wish we got to see that more. Both in canon and in the fandom.

And then!! Reinhardt stayed here right, through it all with the entire world on his shoulders. Oh he was born to carry heavy things; made into something that has to answer the call now and always. He is a defender, now as he ever was, though it’s a new world needs defending

INTEL 🞂 FILE 002 🞂 THE CONSPIRACY.

AKA: we're pretty fuckin' positive that the entire plot of the game is going to hinge on this and if it doesn't, i will single handedly write an entire novel on ao/3 with this concept.

BEFORE I SAY ANNNYYYTHING: MASSIVE CREDITS to @spec08 / @headlyne for coming up with EVERYTHING here. i added bits and pieces but i'm mostly here to organize it into text. this almost all her work!!!

SUMMARY: this whole post is going to be centered around the conspiracy that is central to sombra’s entire character. it will cover what specifically it is all about, the evidence behind it, and how it drives her every move in canon. also, how it ties into the entire plot of the story as a whole. there’s going to be mentions of… almost every single major group involved in overwatch’s canon so it’s a HEFTY piece. be warned!

OPENING.

let’s lay out the context here as simply as possible for everything. if you’re familiar with ovw lore and how sombra’s origin story begins, feel free to skip to the next section. the most important part to note is that there is a large focus on omnica throughout this entire headcanon which i explained in this portion.

the entire plotline of overwatch focuses on the classic story of “what if robots gained sentience?” the central conflict of the entire story focuses around the first omnic war and possibly a second one around the corner. 

there’s a whole bunch of different groups that come to play by the current point of our story, but for now we’ll talk about omnica, the group that inadvertently caused the war in the first place.

omnica was a multinational corporate entity that pioneered the use of AI in robotics, along with research & application of cybernetics. once they began struggling to meet demand for their robots, they patented massive factories known as omniums.  it was after this that dr. mina liao began the next generation of adaptive ai that ultimately came to a point where the omniums began to malfunction and ultimately the whole operation was dismantled. years after, the omnics reactivated themselves somehow and started a war against humanity that became known as the omnic crisis. nobody, including omnica’s former employees, could explain what happened because they had even taken precautions against this very situation.

so now we’re in the omnic crisis. this part is going to be shorter than you’d think because the focus of this headcanon is not overwatch OR talon, especially not this disposition. so let’s do a speedrun-

humans are struggling against the omnics in the war, overwatch is created by the UN to fight against them and they ultimately win, talon’s involvement becomes relevant towards the end of the crisis. the entire world is dramatically affected by this war in every way you can think of- global poverty, devastation, defunct power grids, millions of human deaths worldwide, etc.

now we get into sombra who was born at the veeerrrry end of the omnic war. girl gets orphaned at a very, very young age and quickly realizes her natural talent for tech and digging up information. she uses this as a way to survive and it ultimately becomes this huge rush, an addiction (in her own words), to find more and more about everything and everybody. everything’s fine until her teenage years where, as quoted from her origin story, “[...] for the first time, somebody noticed her.”

THIS somebody is what ultimately becomes her entire motivation and this is what this entire headcanon will be focused on. now before you ask me why i gave you so much exposition, just wait. the omnica portion was really, really important. now…

WHAT DID SOMBRA FIND OUT? ( warning: very long post w/ images galore under the cut. )

here’s where we’re getting into the meat of this piece. what i think sombra found out, which will be referred to as “the conspiracy” as named by her, is something about how the omnics got reactivated and gained sentience. there is a SHOCKING amount of evidence pointing towards this that’s been hiding in plain sight, so let’s start at the source.

immediately, the first thing that points towards this theory is that in the image right before the conspiracy’s symbol is revealed, she’s seen looking into omnics. specifically the class of omnic that mondatta & zenyatta are. why is this relevant? well, considering that these two are the most notable members of the shambali… lemme point out some similarities in the symbols of the conspiracy and some others.

religious eye imagery, dots & lines in intervals of threes, the “iris” … it’s kinda on the nose when you put it all next to each other. and let me just say this now- no, i am not claiming that the shambali order are secretly the big bads of the game. there's actually going to be an accusation for that and it is not an omnic group. stick with me. it’ll come later.

now, running with the topic of omnics. that shade of bright cyan that’s on zenyatta & mondatta’s heads and orbs is seen consistently throughout the entire game. hell, it’s the default color of the game’s UI. it’s on the glowing insides of sojourn’s prosthetics when they open up.  it’s the primary color of the hard light that symmetra & vishkar as a whole uses. it’s also in their logo. and, to bring this back to omnica? it’s one of echo’s main colors. the ai that was created by dr. liao herself and ultimately became the only thing left of her AND omnica.

and while we're looking at echo... there's interesting observation to be made. omnica never had a logo or symbol revealed which is odd considering that almost every single notable organization in overwatch has one. even lumérico, even volskaya. considering this is ALL we have left of omnica and there's an unexplained symbol on her forehead... it's safe to assume that this MIGHT have been their logo. this logo, color scheme, and symmetry is verrry similar to another multinational corporate entity that is currently active and running.

and this is where we begin to point fingers at vishkar.

VISHKAR'S INVOLVEMENT IN THE CONSPIRACY.

let me preface this by saying that i love vishkar and their whole situation in canon. i think theyre extremely interesting and CONSTANTLY slept on by the community. i ALSO believe that theyre going to be a very important part of the game’s canon considering how much information we have on them already. with that out of the way… let’s talk about why everything is pointing towards this group being our real big bad guys!

starting with what was just said, the only symbol we have towards omnica being extremely similar to vishkar’s is extremely on the nose. same white and light blue, her fingers & face look like they’re made of hard light. and if you’re about to say that the face is just a projection… guess what? code of violence confirmed that even cybernetic projections are made of hard light.

gonna continue to harp on the similarities between vishkar and omnica by pointing out that...

they are the only two organizations that are described as “multinational corporate entities.” word for word.

they both made revolutionary advancements in technological fields where their tech was used to improve countless lives, alleviate global poverty, and perform overall public service work.

they both have corrupt corporate sides that remained relatively unknown until it came to a head.

omnica was active before the crisis and vishkar became active afterwards. not during. after. hm.

additionally, hard light is consistently referred to as a “radical” technology despite it’s extremely widespread use. it’s most notably seen used by vishkar, who is the only known party that teaches how to weave and use it. it is also canonically used in lucio’s skates, as barriers in incarceration cells, and in cybernetics (as mentioned two paragraphs ago.) you know what else was widely used at the peak of its development… omnica’s omnics…….. who might also be using hard light tech considering the color theory used throughout the whole game……

but how does this make them “bad?” it doesn’t! not without more context. let’s keep backtracking.

something interesting that doesn’t get pointed out much is how much involvement vishkar really has in the worldbuilding. that whole spiel a paragraph ago is a big part but also…

it’s the only notable corporation that has earned the right to be canonically referred to as a megacorporation AND as one of the most powerful corporations in the world.

they’ve canonically turned to violent methods to get what they want- prime examples being the staged arson in rio de janerio in the comic “a better world” and their lack of care in development in roshani which inadvertently destroyed a sacred statue of the first omnic, aurora, in a shambali neighboring village in the short story “stone by stone.”

assuming they either used to be or had heavy affiliations with omnica, that's a bad look in of itself

they have direct associations with talon since sanjay korpal, their negotiator, is shown on their council multiple times. this is one of the most damning, well known pieces of evidence.

their earliest alliance was directly in defiance of the people of mexico, which involved sombra right from the beginning. how?

hey look, we're full circle! look at them bein' friendly with lumérico!

also worth noting: one of the only humans who has had heavy associations with omnics is vishkar's very own satya vaswani. now we can throw genji in the mix but let's be real, he probably wasn't going to end up involved in this had he not become more robot than man. satya went out of her way to assimilate into the order of the shambali from a place of understanding and genuine interest after vishkar sent her out there to make amends. she's even got a custom outfit and skin which is EXTREMELY pretty but there's two big things to note about it.

first: the color of the headpiece, the eyes all over her, and the repetition of 3s... we've already established the importance of those.

second: out of all of her official lore skins, the one from her time in the shambali order is the ONLY one that does not have a visor over her eyes... the visor she wears for vishkar (rose tinted lenses?)..... the organization who raised her and brought her to where she is.... and the organization she has been questioning slowly since her comic..... that she's showing significantly more suspicion towards in her new ovw2 voicelines..... especially this one

considering satya is our main look into vishkar and she's almost definitely going to be switching sides? that's notable towards the vishkar's the big bad agenda we got going on here.

CLOSING.

now i'm gonna be honest. there is still a lot of information that can further support this theory but we're going to go down a MASSIVE rabbit hole if i keep going. so let me wrap it up here with the final questions & answers to this whole thing.

what is the conspiracy that sombra's obsessed with solving? it's figuring out who reactivated the omnics and caused the omnic crisis which affects the world to this day.

who is the biggest player in regards to the conspiracy? vishkar.

why isn't sombra hiding in vishkar instead of talon then? cuz talon's gonna be a big red herring and she's quickly figuring that out at this point in canon.

who knows this information? nobody besides sombra and she's keeping it that way until it's time to play her cards.

heyhey!! i love your page so much and your analyses of characters.... when you posted cassidy and mysteriousness and how he would only share the most with mina, it could be interesting to expand on that with echo being the closest person and personality to her as a result. it could be a grief amplifier but also it could close up cassidy even more and make him so much more reluctant to share anything real at all,, i've been thinking about this all day!! this is why i love your thoughts!!

Oh trust me I think about this a lot.

The way Declassified described Mina and Cassidy's realationship reminded me so much of something that was mentioned in Deadlock Rebels. That being that Cassidy had walls up, a line that not even Ashe could cross. Those walls being his mask, his persona, something that not a lot of people could see past, let alone break though, but Mina is described as seeing through it instantly, and even breaking through it. She did something that no one else, not even Ashe could do, she saw who Cassidy was without the persona, without the mask. She's the one person we see that Cassidy probably fully opened up to, and the way she died probably altered Cassidy permanently. He was just outside the building when the explosion happened, he raced to where Mina was and was the only person with her in her final moments. That would change anyone, and we see that it changed Cassidy, making him more hostile in the beginning but then he just began building those walls again, stronger this time. Hiding behind the mask even more so he wouldn't be hurt like that again.

One of my biggest HC's is that Cassidy and Echo have a father-daughter relationship, as some of Echo's personality wouldn't have come from Mina, but would have definitely come from Cole. Such as her outwardly sassing people like Ramattra, that and the way she teases people along with how she empathises with people and comforts them. We also know from her short story that the first people Echo could copy were Mina, Cassidy and Jack, Mina and Cassidy being the people she was around the most. That doesn't detract from the fact that Echo is still very similar to Mina, having similar behaviours and mannerisms.

Considering how we see Cassidy interact with Echo, it's very obvious that he isn't as open to her as he was with Mina. To me, Cassidy isn't the type of person to treat Echo as just a copy of Liao, she's her own person. However considering his history with her and Liao, it would be hard for him to not see the similarities. Also I would like to point out that the way that Echo and Cassidy talk about Liao feels like child asking an alive parent what their deceased parent would have thought of them.

Something else I would like to add is that Cassidy was so focused on revenge he wasn't able to attend Mina's funeral. Which probably adds another layer of grief on an already steaming sess pool of shit, because on top of all of that, Gerard gets injured and Reyes shoots a guy out of a window, basically signing Overwatch's death warrant. Then right after that the Zurich explosion happens and Cassidy looses his arm, his family, his home, and what fragile stability he had from being an Overwatch agent. During this time, Echo is also put in quarantine.

He probably feels like he failed Echo, that he failed Mina. It probably being part of the reason why he sounds so hostile about Jack "chasing ghosts", he knows what revenge can do to a person, how it can affect the people around them.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Cassidy's story is so much more complex and tragic if you stop and really think about it.

(btw, writing this reminded me that shortly after this, he would have had to watch as Genji and Lena were critically injured while fighting Doomfist.)

So I’ve seen people ask about how old Dr Liao would be if she were still alive so, here is my guess as to how old she’d be if she were still alive and how old she’d have been when she died

Note: OW2 takes place 2 years after OW1 so I’m counting the ‘present day’ as when OW2 takes place. Also there’s a lot of rough estimates and I’m going solely based off of what her youngest possible age could be given the information available but still being somewhat realistic

So first, what do we actually know:

Well the declassified book confirms that she graduated Oxford at 16, she then joins a local robotics startup, and then joins omnica sometime after this so my guess is she joins omnica at ~19 (I refuse to be believe she’s younger than this in genesis)

The next bit is spotty and the only real information we have to go off of is that Omnica Corp goes bankrupt within a year of going into financial troubles (as confirmed in declassified, although Genesis states that ‘within a few years Omnica was done’ but I see this as within a few years of the company’s start) and that Omnica shuts down leaving the ‘Omniums abandoned for years’.

So we can add one year to her age for how long she was at omnica corps for (Genesis seems to imply that omnica going bust and the creation of Aurora all happens pretty quickly so give or take she was there for about a year), the only problem is, how many ‘years’ were they Omniums abandoned for

Well ‘years’ implies its at least 2 and the way Lt.Perez says it in Genesis makes it feel like it’s a few more than that, so 4-5 years would be my guess

So if we’re going by lowest possible age, she’d be 24/25 when the omnic crisis starts, the only problem is, when does the omnic crisis start?

The consistency with when the omnic crisis starts isn’t great, the given time frame during OW1 is that the omnic crisis started 30 years prior to the events of OW1 and so 32 years prior to the events of OW2, simple right? Well the Communication Inbox in the OW2 story missions states that the omnic crisis started 28 years prior to the events of OW2 (26 years before OW1), so which is it? Well the Sojourn novel confirms that Sojourn has a twin sister (named Valentine) who is married and has a child, Bonnie, who is 5 at the time of the book, if the omnic crisis happens 32 years ago, that would mean that Valentine had Bonnie at 14 which is considerably less likely than If the omnic crisis happened 28 years ago where she’d have been 18

So going based off of all of this Liao would be ~19 + ~1 + 4/5 + 28 which if we are going based off of lowest estimates would be 52, putting her a year older than Sojourn which I think makes sense

As for how old she is when she died, this is slightly easier as Declassified confirms she is killed in the Oslo attack which this article (see below) confirms happened 8 years prior to OW1 so 10 years prior to OW2, this is backed up by the fact that Oslo, Rome and the Venice incident happened in quick succession (again confirmed by declassified) and as Venice happened 8 years prior to OW1 (10 prior to OW2) this means her age at death is her age she would be in total (~52) minus 10
