The Lazaret part 2 (mc story)

Part 1; here.

It had been Kyle's first week on the Lazaret and not much had changed yet. Kyle hadn't gotten any letters from Julian or Asra and while Julian didn't surprise him with the amount of work the Dr. piled on himself. There was something weird about having heard nothing back from Asra, even after their argument two weeks felt intense, then again he couldn't really talk having been unable to send a single letter. Each time he thought maybe it would be good enough he found himself shoving it into the chest he had for his belongings. It had slowly gone from him trying to spend an hour everyday trying to find out how to write it to slowly every moment of his free time whenever not tending to people's needs, eating and sleeping. A part of him said it would be easier if Asra had written something since replying was easier than trying to figure out exactly how to explain everything. The more he thought about it the less he knew what to say nor how to say it.

Yet writing to Julian was almost too easy. Just mentioning how his chores were mainly setting up beds, making sure they eat and drank, helping the Dr.s trying out different medicine. Truth was their was one more job, one that made the job go from gloomy to a new level of darkness, the furnaces. He had been lucky to avoid being put on them often but even only being on that job once or twice having people on the table only to be turned to ash by the fire. He hadn't been sure what was worse, being the one to push them in and close the door or being the one that had to move the ash afterwards knowing the gray easily broken apart powder was all that remained, that and charred bones. Feeling a shiver run up his spine he tried to shake it from his memory as he looked at the rough letter he had in his hands. Deciding not to mention that job he had focused on highlighting his job and everything that had been going on. Only when he was sure he had everything did he scroll it up to start work on a letter to Asra. And sat there staring at it, even as the sun set. With nothing but a chill creeping in he headed inside. Putting everything away he almost collapsed into the bed before quickly falling asleep.

When he woke up he felt tired as he stretched. Having a bad feeling he headed over to a nearby reflection. Red sclera, he knew he would have to work fast. Having rolled up the scrolls before hand it wasn't too hard ro roughly move them into a smaller container. Only taking the scrolls and his cape, it might ha e fireproof protections but he didnt want to risk it. With it in a smaller container he put on his plague dr. Mask. Taking a deep breath he made sure he had the key to the shop and some valuables he had but no use for. Picking up the chest he headed to the shore to meet with the boat person doing the first trip and least busy.

"I need your help. I'm willing to pay you this bag full of coin, a couple of pears and other treasures all for the simple price of, taking this to the magic shop and putting it inside, locking the door after with the key inside. When you come back you can have all of this."

"What makes you think that's worth my time and how do I know you wont just refuse to pay?" The sharp tone caused Kyle to flinch slightly.

"If it's not worth taking a box to a shop and leaving it there that's up to you. As for me refusing to pay, I'm four foot tall you could probably throw me over the wall without trying. I just need this box delivered because it's for someone." He decided to half lie at the end. Technically the shop would probably go to Asra and this was now a part of the shop. Shaking the thought he tried to focus.

"Fine but you better be here or I'll find you"

"The island isn't that big, I'll just stay on the beach." Kyle reassured while walking over to the nearby beach. The ash stuck to his shoes as he waited. A part of him knew they could just ditch the box and yet there was no reason to regr- he had to tell Julian and Asra. He actually had to tell them. Heading inside but leaving the bag half buried just in case, he soon returned with quill, ink and paper. It was not ideal but he had to inform them. Yet he had no idea how to write it. Straight to the point? Humor? No humor? Taking a deep breath Kyle tried to calm himself.

'Hey, Julian.

As you know I have been working on the Lazaret, well you probably know where this is going, I have it. I have been unable to process the right words to tell Asra, could you please tell him for me?.

Taking a deep breath at the messy but legible writing. Scrolling it up he got up as he saw the person returning. "Here's the bag as I promised and I was wondering since your going to shore next if you could pass this along?" He handed over the bag and letter.

"Fine." With a satisfying nod he left. He knew they hated being told what to do but also knew today wasn't the day to argue. Taking off the plague dr. outfit with nothing else to do the adrenaline of it slowly started to fade away as he felt a lot worse. Heading to the patients he decided to find a good spot and settle down. As he let time blur around him. It was weird like a single minute had passed or an hour and he wouldn't know. He found his mind drifting from Julian to Asra to his older brother he had left behind when he had run away. Was he still alive? Did he miss him? Kyle knew he missed him and the forest. Closing his eyes he tried to imagine the bird calls the bright sun, the hot yet heavily moist air, the sound of the water, just everything he could to try and let time past faster. From being tackled off the tree into the ocean by Tui, to Albatross picking him up from behind and play fighting with him. Trying to shake the thoughts away it only moved onto his time on the pirate ship, helping someone design a tarot deck in return for them fixing his cape up, he didn't even know tarot back then and yet the description's she had given him had helped him draw what she wanted. Closing his eyes he could still imagine the night they had spent cuddled up together in the crows nest before he had woken up alone. Making it to the shop and meeting his aunt and learning magic properly, the masquerade. Between his daydreaming, coughing and feeling awful the day slowly passed on.

Before he knew it he was being gently pulled onto a bed, and he made no effort to fight as he laid down. His hands barely recognizable with the plagues red veins that ran up his arm like spider webs leaving his hands red. It wasn't as bad as some patients he had seen and had the feeling if left alone he could survive a few more days maybe even a week. Yet he also knew their was no point arguing, today, tomorrow, next week his future was the fire. The only way his story would end is in fire, he had been told years ago he had a complicated relationship with fire, it had burned his house down and his sister had used it to scare him away, it had always had a way to find him and here he was facing fire again. He didn't even need to pretend to be fully focused to know where he was going, where he knew he would end up. Yet when he found himself in the confirmed dark space it fully set in this was where it was all going to end. And yet all he could think was 'I'm sorry'. 'I'm sorry I didn't leave when they wanted me to, I'm sorry I tried falling in love, I'm sorry I ran away, I'm sorry I couldn't say no, I'm sorry, I'm- I'm sorry' As he felt the heat of the fire bellow building he closed his eyes his throat dry and harsh. "-I'm sorry" he wasn't sure what part he was apologizing for, all of it? did it matter? With the heat building around him more and more he closed his eyes taking a deep breath-

He couldn't remeber anything else. Yet he could feel a soft pain all over his joints everwhere. But it wasn't pain, it didn't hurt, it was something else, a soft numbness. Lifting their head up they were in a forest. Yet, they couldn't get up. Their body felt hollow like it wasn't there like it was just their mind, was this the magic realm? why were they stuck then? trying to force themnselves to get up a thick mud clung to them dragging them down.

He had no idea how long it had been, their was no way to tell time. It was always sunny, it was always hot and it was only getting hotter. It was like when he thought it couldn't get worse the sun would shine even stronger as if to prove them wrong. It was always trying to prove him wrong. No, matter how hot it got the mud never dried up. He had hopped maybe the sun would dry it up and yet he only sunk deeper each time he thought maybe it was close to drying up. He had gone form his legs being stuck to only his arms above being out of the mud. Even then he could feel it dragging at his clothes, it wanted him to finish sinking. It wasn't just the mud, as he sunk the forest itself seemed to glitch like it couldn't keep itself alive, the trees started to bleed together into oen solid wooden wall, the sky turned from leaves to a blochy mess of greens and blues. It was falling apart within itself, breaking itself down slowly. Their was something inside him telling him to just give up to close his eyes and let himself sink into the mud, When those thoughts got loud he would struggle, no. He couldn't give up. He had no idea where he was but he wasn't goning to give up.

As he found himself struggling something changed. It was hard to know what but he could sense something nearby. Looking over he tesned, a large creature stood nearby, it's beak opened and closed as it seemed to suddenly rush towards him. Unable to predirct what it wanted he tried to cover his face as it stopped above him looking down at him with it's head tilted. While he couldn't hear it he could swear he could almost sense waht it wanted. It wanted to save him, a trade, a deal. He knew better than making deal's with demons and yet this didn't feel like a demon, but trying to think where his mind fogged over, where was he from? where were they from? The creature held out a large paw with feathers ruffled down it's arm. 'Let me live inside you and I'll give you my body and magic. You will lose waht memories you remember still, but you can gain them back again as you grow.' His memories and lettign this thing live inside him for a new body, new magic. A sharp numbness ran up what little of his spine he could still feel as he reached out grabbing the paw, a chance to be reborn and all he had to do was let this thing live inside him. Suddenly everything blurred together as he felt them suddenly tug them out of the mud, standing on their hind paws as they fell backwards, out of where they were. As they rolled he felt himself melting into them.

The next thing he felt was diorantaited, everything hurt and his hands didn't look right, his hands moved on their own ripping out the few feathers that stuck out of his arms. Sharp pain raidating as the feathers seemed to melt into a black liquid that vanished into them as he laid down unable to stay up, unable to stay awake. Unsure where he was, what he was, who he was, everything melted and blurred together as he closed his eyes. Would he even remember this, he wondered as he let the soft darkness consume him once more.

He was said that he died in the war, but after the Meiji Restoration, he reappeared as the new Tokugawa shogunate. Somehow, he seems to know something about your lost memory...

THE BROOKLYN HORROR FILM FESTIVAL Announces Full 2024 Program!

The Brooklyn Horror Film Festival (BHFF) announced the full program for its 2024 incarnation, running October 17-24 with all screenings held at Nitehawk Cinema’s Williamsburg and Prospect Park locations. Audiences are in for an unworldly lineup of films and events, including a special screening of Larry Fessenden’s HABIT with the Leviathan Award Ceremony, honoring his film career.

The Opening Night film is the NY premiere of DEAD MAIL from directors Joe DeBoer and Kyle McConaghy. The 2024 festival boasts the North American Premieres of exciting new films: Tiago Teixeira’s unsettling body horror film CUSTOM; a new documentary on horror at the turn of the millennium from Phillip Escott and Sarah Appleton, GENERATION TERROR; and New Zealand director Sasha Rainbow’s film GRAFTED.

The festival will feature the world premieres of Izzy Lee's first feature, HOUSE OF ASHES; the atmospheric ghost story, LILLY LIVES ALONE, and the queer sci-fi adventure PSYCHONAUT. The festival’s other spotlight titles include ANIMALE, the beautiful revenge-fantasy from French director Emma Benestan as the festival’s Centerpiece Film; and THE RULE OF JENNY PEN starring Geoffrey Rush and John Lithgow as the Closing Night Film.

The festival’s signature sidebar programs return, starting with FEAR IN FOCUS: SPAIN, which includes the North American premiere of EXORCISMO, a documentary that focuses on the violent and smutty film history of the post-Franco era of Spanish cinema; as well as retro screenings of VAMPYRES and THE BLOOD SPATTERED BRIDE on 35mm; which ties into the Vampire sidebar that features Abel Ferrara’s THE ADDICTION and a screening of the Spanish version of DRACULA with a live score from The Flushing Remonstrance. MISKATONIC INSTITUTE OF HORROR STUDIES will also return to host a special lecture by Dr. Leah Richards "Queer Vampires, Queer Liberation, Queer Futurity.

Anime Update V2 48

Hunter x Hunter - Three whole episodes spent on the strangest and most intense game of doge ball, with Gon and the others playing against Razor and his pirate team, in the process learning that what they thought was the inside of a virtual Nen-created game is in fact a very real place. And Hisoka hogging the glory by hitting the ball back to Razor and using his Bungee Gum on it just so he could get the win was marvelous. The backstory between Razor and Ging was a bit of groaner in how specific what Ging laid out for Razor was, but it did provide good context into why Razor is like how he is today. But then, who should come calling but Genthru, just in case you’d forgotten!

Fruits Basket - Initial episode I watched focused on Tohru in a visit to the Sohma Estate where she tended to matters with Kureno and Momiji. The Momiji content was great, the Kureno content not so much, though we did get a tease at Akito’s mother, Ren Sohma. The next episode showed more promise, so I watched it and was not let down. Just a whole episode of our leading high schooler pals on a class trip in Kyoto is rewarding in a way you don’t even care that not much is advanced, you enjoy watching these characters that much. (Only odd thing is that the Prince Yuki Fanclub is set up stalking Yuki from a distance early in but it doesn’t go anywhere! If they were following the whole while, did they just end up laughing too hard at Yuki’s embarrassing routine with his Student Council buddies to actually do anything?) Next time, though, is going to hurt, I can tell.

Date A Live S4 - Kurumi finally showed Shido, and the audience, her backstory of how she met the Spirit of Origin and became a Spirit, fighting and killing the lesser evolved Spirits only to end up learning that all Spirits begin as human, even taking the life of her best friend due to Mio’s deception. While it was an interesting backstory, the very end sort of took away from it, as Mio exposits a lot of details that are so weirdly phrased and unclear that it came out unintelligable!

Re:ZERO - Not this time. Must ready myself for the turning point...

Fate Stay/Night: Unlimited Blade Works - Yes, I know this was the title of a movie I already watched, but now I’ve started the series version! I love already that I’m back to events that followed Fate Zero, but this time we’re looking at things primarily from Rin’s POV. Mela Lee in this role has only gotten better, loved hearing (though not seeing) Kirei again, and Cristina Vee and Kyle McCarley as Sakura and Shinji Matou respectively work as well, if not even better than their predecessors. Kaiji Tang’s Archer took some getting used to, but once he dropped the jerkass facade and being more cool and straightforward, it was really working for me. The only voice I do not care for is Bryce Papenbrook as Shirou. Just...no. He makes him sound like Nagito. Bring Sam Reigel back, plz? And I guess now I have two nickels ‘cause an hour long series premiere of a Fate franchise anime ending right as we first see Saber happened twice!

Symphogear G - Got to hand it to this show. Going into this climax, they could’ve played it safe and just given us the Good Guys VS the Bad Guys for one final time, but they make it more complicated by having one from each side swap teams at the 11th hour (Shirabe’s now with the Good Guys and Chris is with the Bad Guys), having the lead baddie dying and unable to stop what she helped to start, and having poor Maria stuck in a chamber with Dr. Ver, the true psycho bastard in all this. I’m super pumped to see how this all turns out!

MAR - The Ginta VS Ash battle finally came and while it was quite interesting on Ash’s end that he didn’t want to kill or seriously harm Ginta since he’s still a kid and Ash is friend to all children, but from Ginta we just got more of the same “I hate Phantom and what the Chess Pieces do!” righteous fury. But hey, Ash ends up foreiting the fight to Ginta AND we even briefly see Ashs’ face behind the skull mask! And he’s just...some good looking dude! Who’d have thunk it?

Gintama - It felt like such a long wait, but finally we have Sacchan! Though the premiere already showed us what she’s all about, her proper debut does well in showing her discovering that kinky, masochistic side of herself and starting to bring it out more in sneaky ways as she’s working her plan to lay low from the literal rat bastard she’d been out to assasinate. It meanders a bit in places, but that’s more than made up for when Gin and Sacchan raid the rat’s hideout, with so much of the situation and the dialogue from all the characters being hilarious. And so, when Sacchan left only to come back literally the very next day for more kinky stuff with Gin, it felt all too right.

Yuki Yuna Is A Hero - Finally, I’ve seen the last three episodes that make up the climax and finale of the initial series, where Yuna, Fuu, Itsuki and Karin fight against a huge horde of Vertex unleashed by Togo and have to stop them from killing the Shinju Sama and with it, destroying the entire world. It’s definitely a case where I can say I really enjoyed it, BUT. And in this case the “BUT” would be that the lead-in to the finale, what literally makes it all happen, is straight up contrived nonsense. Pulling a “this is the dark, despair-inducing TRUTH of the world you live in and fight for” twist without having put in the worldbuilding effort to really earn it just kind of takes a dump on the integrity of the Heroes Club and their nice little slice-of-life regular setting, and it feels like it was just done to throw a Madoka takeoff on top of an already implemented Madoka takeoff, as well as serve as a cheap and convenient way to justify Togo taking a leap right into “kill everything and end it all!” nihilism. I also don’t think we needed to see Sonoko again, and what was done, or NOT done, with the Taisha was beyond disappointing given the earlier build-up, though I hear that it finally ended up happening in one of the later seasons. But I can’t say it took me out of it completely and that I wasn’t engaged in the action from start to finish, nor that the second half of the final episode didn’t get to me. Seiji Kishi really knows how to make good on the heartfelt moments and I just love the Hero Club girls so much that I wanted more than anything to see them all happy in the end. Thankfully they are, and as later seasons prove, they always will be.

Random facts about my Mc's spoiler edition. Warning, spoilers.

Kyle;

Out of my Mc's was the one to spend the least amount of time under Julian. Pretty much only studying under him for about a week or two before moving the Lazaret to work as a nurse.

Despite having the title of plague dr. Kyle was actually more of a nurse/assistant. Being in charge of helping plague dr.s preform their attempts to cure the plague. Helping patients feel more comfortable.

Due to this role he had very little contact with Vladimir.

Their argument with Asra never become yelling but it was still quiet intense. While Kyle did raise his voice it still never got to the point of either of them shouting. The closest being a sharp growl and exaggerated hand movements to vent out the feelings.

Growls and muttering the entire way to Julian's clinic along with jump stomps and normal stomps. (Was never physically violent but finds a big jump stomp helps vent the angry energy he gets out. Has better ways of dealing with it post-plague unless it's that bad. Then he'll do it in private.)

The quickest of my Mc's to succumb to the plague partly due to not fighting the drs when they said it was time having already accepted his fate the moment his sclera turned red. Caught it in the morning ash by nightfall.

Hunter;

Had the most 'explosive' fight with Asra. Ended up with Asra having to leave the argument. (This does leave Asra with the feeling maybe if they had approached it better it would've had a different result. But deep down they know it wouldn't've)

Violently kicked a wall before heading to Julian's clinic/the palace. Hurt their toe badly which they had to heal with magic.

#420 (found dr #420 and forced convinced them to give them that number.)

Worked closely with Vladimir unlike Kyle and did a lot of gross work.

Wasn't a qualified dr but would look into other people's work and pick up where they left off.

Took a bit before they caught the plague. As they kept super clean hating blood and gross stuff. But still not too much longer than the typical plague dr.

Showed the most resistance to being sent to the Lazaret. Escaping onto the streets to roam before being forced onto an over crowded boat. Once there they weighed up drowning trying to swim back or fire.

Picked the fire because it was more dramatic but you can bet they drank like it was the end of the world. (Which it kind of was for them.)

The plague drs were scared they were going to punch them so let Hunter do their thing until too drunk to fight back.

Their red irises almost seemed to bleed into their red sclera causing completely red eyes with a black dot in the center for their pupils.

Bluebell;

Was the only qualified dr our of the Mc's and thus did a lot of plague dr work.

Took the longest to catch and succumb to the plague. Having strong healing magic to help fight the magical side and keeping clean.

Was forcefully snuck out by Julian saying dying on the Lazaret while horrible would be better than being cut open while still alive.

Similarly to Hunter wondered the streets but instead of getting drunk tried to help as many people as they could.

When sent to the Lazaret it was because they could bearly stand anymore. Using their healing magic to heal themselves as much as they could. Healing drains you. Eventually a plague dr told Bluebell it was time to let go. As they were bearly grasping concussions when the flames took them.

They had the least dramatic argument with Asra. Firmly stating they weren't leaving but ultimately calmly walking out. Too calmly.

Unlike with the anger of Hunter or the determination of Kyle it just left a cold feeling like ice. Their was no fiery determination for Asra to remember no passionate spark. Just an already tired dr with healing magic and a cold see you later, that turned into a goodbye.
