Design
Species: Cat
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Asexual
Family: Nathan(Father), Teresa(Mother), Marie(Grandmother), Brandon(Grandfather), Nathaniel(Ancestor), Miranda(Ancestor), Barrett(Ancestor) Lauren(Grandmother), Oliver(Uncle), Matt(Grandfather)
Likes: Roses, fantasy movies, action movies, his parents Nathan and Teresa, rabbits, cats, spending time with Courage, Bunitty(platonic love interest), becoming a detective, mystery shows
Dislikes: Courage in danger, Muriel in danger, danger, his friends in danger, spiders(except Tyrone and his spider crew), Toxin(worst enemy), spicy food, getting scared, violence, his family in danger, Eustace Bagge(enemies)
Friends: Courage, Muriel, Felix, Clive, Justin, Maxwell, Olive, Geo, Charlie, Bunny, Kitty, Bunitty(platonic love interest), Gabriel, Russell, Platinum, Milo(Uncle to him), Grayson, Shady(Childhood best friend/brotherly figure), Computer, Team Frostbite(Damien the Wolf, Malcolm the Mountain Hare, Snowflake the Arctic Fox, Chief Azrael etc), Absolute Six(Jasper, Cyan, Marina, Hurley, Jackson and Carmen), Aden, Eight Tribes of Honour(Lucifer, Claude, Nigel, Krimson, Iram, Blizzard, Twigs and Possum Mob), Fred, Lord Blade VI, Cannibals of Vintage City, Bon, Cyril, Hunchback of Nowhere, Bigfoot, Duck Brothers, Dr Vindaloo, Courage's parents, Animals of Fear Gang
Neutral: Shirley, General, Lieutenant, Banana Suit Dealer
Enemies: Eustace, Fred(formerly), Katz, Le Quack, Cajun Fox, Weremole, Black Puddle Queen, Clutching Foot, Mad Dog, King Ramses, Sirius, Toxin, Alan, Jacob, Raven, Cruel Veterinarian, Vore, Thursday, Tuesday, Saber, Slice, Dice, Amaris, Sin Clowns(Pride, Wrath, Gluttony, Greed, Lust, Envy and Sloth), Fear King, Fear Slaves, Di Lung, Mecha Courage, Ma Bagge, Gem, Evangeline the Musical Mistress, Bone Antler
Facts:
He has a fear of spiders because of the abuse he got from Toxin who is in fact a spider himself.
Barry knows how to hold a gun, however it's a toy gun that shoots corks instead of bullets. He learnt his technique of handling his toy gun by his ancestor Barrett.
He is neutral to Shirley the Medium. He shows respect to her but worries about the curses she puts onto others.
After rescuing Bunitty from Mad Dog, the two became really friends, until they both start to have platonic feelings for each other.
His interactions with the General and the Lieutenant left him in dismay, due to the them fighting with each other or their "antics" as Barry refers it all to.
Barry has become a victim hunted down by Thursday and Tuesday AKA Feline Hunters, since he is a cat.
In the crossover; Straight Outta Nowhere! Scooby Doo Meets Courage The Cowardly Dog. Barry becomes allies with the Mystery Inc. His favourite members of it are Shaggy and Scooby Doo.
Barry loves watching mystery shows, which got him dreaming of becoming an great detective.
Barry's relationship with Computer didn't go well at first, because Computer became (of course) a bit of a jerk to him, until Computer was aware that Barry has anxiety. By that, he now helps Barry how to cope with anxiety.
Barry is allies with Team Frostbite, Absolute Six and Eight Tribes of Honour, he sees Team Frostbite and Tribes of Honour as family figures.
He loves his grandparents Marie and Brandon. Marie loves him dearly and Brandon has a soft spot for him, he tends to nickname him "Scamp" if he forgets his grandson's name.
Whenever Courage isn't around with him, he takes the role as Courage himself. He does remember two of his catchphrases and says them whenever he is in a dangerous situation. The catchphrases being "The things i do for love!" and "I know something bad is gonna happen or if my name is [random name]! And I'm glad it's not."
Barry has the ability to sense any danger that is coming
Barry is the one who set Lucifer free by his order and he fully knows that he has gained freedom.
Barry had an ultimate regret by setting Fear King free. This is because the King was abusing him psychological and uses his anxiety for his goals, but only to make it more worse, but then Barry finally stands up to him, telling him that releasing him was the worse idea he had done and he now sends him back to his book for all eternity and throw it out.
Despite having a fear of spiders, Barry became allies with Tyrone and his spider crew. It was said by Barry that he doesn't fear spiders that show kindness to him

Quote
One of the ways dominance functions, is through being unexamined. For example, when we hear the word race in the United States we tend to immediately think African American, Latino, Asian American, Native American, etc. When we hear the term sexual orientation, we tend to think gay, lesbian, bisexual [...]. When we hear the term gender, we tend to think women. In each case, the dominant group, white people, heterosexual people, men, don't get examined. As if men don't have a gender. As if white people don't belong to some racial grouping. As if heterosexual people don't have some sort of sexual orientation. In other words, we always focus on the subordinated group and not on the dominant group. And that's one of the ways that dominant groups aren't questioned - by remaining invisible
Dr. Jackson Katz

Note: the [...] was taking out the misidentification of transgender as a sexual orientation, instead of as a gender identity.

The Big Ones:
Imagine this: a new animator for Warner bros comes in to work. They noticed the Warner sibling acting zany to the max and decided to doodle them one day. Once they finished their doodles of the Warner sibs, they went to buy a drink but left it on a table outside on accident. The Warner sibs see it and are amazed by it. But they are unknown to who is the artist behind these amazing drawings. The animator goes back to collect their sketchbook after getting their drink, of course, before the Warner sibs hide discreetly to see who the artist is. The animator sighs in relief to see that their sketchbook is back in their own hands. They quickly go back to their department before their lunch ends. The Warner siblings soon find their interest piqued in this animator, so they go to see them, but the animator has no clue on who “the Animaniacs” are because they were born after their show ended. They become good friends. Instead of scowling and getting mad at their jokes, they simply laugh and are patient with them. Eventually, one day, pinky and brain make a portal gun where if they shoot someone, they will be teleported to another timeline. The animaniacs find this portal gun and start to shoot everywhere for fun and accidentally shoot their animator friend. They are distraught and ask pink and brain for help. Animator friend gets teleported to animaniacs 1993, in the year 1995. They take the role of temp nurse with hello nurse and Dr Scratch n sniff . Of course, finding pinky and brain to help them to go back to their world (2024). From their animator friend disguised as temp nurse, meets the Warner siblings and start their friendship all over again except in the year 1995. The animator friend always laughed when the Warner brothers say “Hello nurse” and dot replying “it’s hard to be the strong one”. Always greeting them with a hello and how are you. Animator friend even stuck up for them when the ceo and Dr Scratch n sniff was talking smack about them. Eventually, the brain managed to find a way for the reader to go back home. The Warner sibs were sad and that’s when animator friend told them that they were from the future and that they were friends in that timeline and that they will return but instead they will work there as a different profession. Animator friend returns, and all is back to normal. The Warner sibs don’t realize that animator friends and temp nurses are the same person. So after the day animator friend went back to their timeline, the animation department got egg bombed, and all their equipment had stayed in the department, so all the animators had to take temporary jobs in the studio. Animator got the nurse job again, dr scratch n sniff recognizes animation friend (he knew it was animation friend disguised as temp nurse because they needed a disquise to stay in the studio so brain can get the portal gun ready to send friend home. Brain explained to scratch n sniff, and the 3 of them were a team temporarily) . And since the hello nurse was away on vacation dr scratch n sniff needed the help. The Warner sibs decided to pay a visit to Dr Scratch n sniff and unknowingly see temp nurse (animation friend). They were ready to cry and jump on animation friend, saying how much they’ve missed them. Dr Scratch n sniff is confused going “guys it animator friend you just saw them 15 min ago”. That’s when they connected the dots and were like “what!” During the next 3 weeks, they were attached to animator friend like glue.
Riddler and Batman rivalry, with Riddler's obsession being more romantic and Batman's being more platonic (BTAS).
You used to work with Edward back at Competitron, helping out with the game a little bit (possible romantic tension between the two of you), but distanced yourself after the whole 'Trying to kill Mockridge' thing. Batman, at one point, had come around to ask you questions about him and your employer. After Edward got sent to Arkham, maybe you were writing to him, hoping he could get better, but really not visiting him, maybe just intimidated by the place or too scared to see fully what he's become.
Batman checks up with you frequently, making sure you're not too disheartened by Edward becoming the Riddler, along with helping you move on. Later, when Riddler gets trapped in virtual reality, it's the first time you really visit him, and you really start waiting for him to wake up — Batman is there of course, because he really doesn't like the idea of leaving you alone with him, coma-like state or not.
Eventually, when Riddler comes back, you help him get used to being back in his body — physical therapy and whatnot — helping him be on good behaviour — leading up to him being on parole.
Finally, Riddler's free, the Wacko Toys deal is going great, and he actually has the connection with you he lost long ago. Things couldn't be better! Until Batman comes in, knowing he isn't reformed at all. You fight against the idea, because why wouldn't you? You believed in Edward, and you hope that eventually Batman sees it, too.
Finally, the Wacko Toys party; and Riddler and you are actually having the time of your lives — catching up, playful flirtation, all the fun stuff. Then Batman comes in again, telling Riddler in a one-on-one that he knows he 'can't help himself', and how long does 'he plan on lying to you?'

“According to Jackson Katz, author of “The Macho Paradox: Why Some Men Hurt Women and How All Men Can Help,” it’s not necessarily the ideology behind white nationalism, anti-feminism or the alt-right that initially appeals to young white men and boys as much as it is the sense of being part of a “heroic struggle.”
Participating in the alt-right community online “offers the seductive feeling of being part of a brotherhood, which in turn validates their manhood,” Dr. Katz says. YouTubers and participants in chat forums like 4chan, the defunct 8chan and Discord “regularly denigrate liberal or progressive white men as soft, emasculated ‘soy boys’ and insufficiently aggressive or right-wing white men as ‘cucks.’”
It also seems to me, as a mom, that these groups prey upon the natural awkwardness of adolescence. Many kids feel out of place, frustrated and misunderstood, and are vulnerable to the idea that someone else is responsible for their discontent. When they’re white and male, they’re spoon-fed a list of scapegoats: people of color, feminists, immigrants, L.G.B.T.Q. people. If they really embrace this, it’s not hard to convince them that there’s a “white genocide” happening and that these people — and the “leftists” who represent their interests — are to blame.”

My Decade in Books Tag
@lexi-rose-studyblr tagged me for this--thanks!!
The rules: respond to the prompt “my decade in books” however you want, & then tag some ppl! I chose some of my favorites from that year along with a brief description of what I was doing (which is different than what the person who tagged me did). You can do that or make up your own response
I had to do something I never do to make this post: use Tumblr on my computer. I forgot what it looks like in a browser instead of mobile--it’s weird
Lucky for me, I joined Goodreads in 2009, although I didn’t use it regularly until 2015. So I had some help to remember, but let’s just say I left a lot of blanks for myself
2010: This was the end of my sophomore and start of junior year in high school, and because of the coursework at the time, I still had the ability to read in every spare moment. I read a lot of the Bloody Jack series by L.A. Meyer, a lot of e.e. cummings, and Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne
2011: Junior-senior year of high school, and I was so concerned with first AP tests and then college applications, I know goodreads snuck off my radar a lot. I finally read Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, which was one of my grandpa’s favorite books (he died in 2003), and many other classics as I prepped for my AP Lit test. I actually enjoyed many of the ones I read, but I no longer remember which ones I read from the 2010-2012 period, so I thought I’d mention a couple of them here: The Great Gatsby, Cry the Beloved Country, Go Tell it On the Mountain, Sons and Lovers, and Pride and Prejudice
2012: Senior year of high school and starting my freshman year of college. I really had no idea how much my life was about to change--I regularly stay in touch with only a tiny handful of my friends from high school now, which is weird. I do remember, though, in prep for my AP Lit test, my teacher gave us a list of prompts from previous years, and I made it my mission to find a way to use Harry Potter for all of them. I ended up writing the actual test essay on the Scottish Play--which I dearly love--but it was fun anyway. I again have a mostly empty goodreads, but I really liked The Macho Paradox by Jackson Katz and The Books of Bayern by Shannon Hale
2013: Ending my freshman year and starting my sophomore year of college, I started dating my now-husband, and I used goodreads much less than before. Of the few books I included on goodreads, I enjoyed Deadly Persuasion by Jean Kilbourne and The Cry of the Icemark by Stuart Hill, which was a reread (and still one of my favorite books ever).
2014: This year were some of my hardest physics classes in undergrad, so I almost never used goodreads, which means my memory of what I read is limited. I did enjoy A Confusion of Princes by Garth Nix, but that’s the only rating I left
2015: Junior-senior year of undergrad, when I realized I didn’t want to go to astro grad school, but wanted to be involved in science education somehow. Some of my favorite books were: The Shadow and Bone trilogy by Leigh Bardugo (and so began my love for Queen Leigh), the Alex and Ada comic book trilogy, Nimona by Noelle Stevenson, the Chaos Walking trilogy by Patrick Ness, Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins, Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein, When Christ and His Saints Slept by Sharon Kay Penman, Ash by Malinda Lo, Seraphina by Rachel Hartman, 1421 by Gavin Menzies, and House of Ivy and Sorrow by Natalie Whipple
2016: I graduated with my undergrad degrees, and while I waited to be able to apply for the next round of grad school openings, I worked part-time at a library--so, so many good books were found that way. We adopted our sweet fur babies that year. Books I loved included: The Imposter Queen by Sarah Fine, A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket, Heartless by Marissa Meyer, When the Moon Was Ours by Anne-Marie McLemore, The Supernatural Enhancements by Edgar Cantero, The Paper Magician trilogy by Charlie N. Holmberg, Everything Leads To You by Nina LaCour, The Princess Saves Herself In This One by Amanda Lovelace, Isabella: The Warrior Queen by Kirstin Downey, and a variety of girl-lead superhero comic books for my women’s and gender studies senior thesis
2017: I started grad school that fall, but spend the first half of the year still working at the library, so I read a whole lot. It was also the year my now-husband proposed. Highlights include: Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire, The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie by Alan Bradley, Wild Beauty by Anne-Marie McLemore, Wicked Like a Wildfire by Lana Popovic, A Caribbean Mystery by Agatha Christie, To Be Or Not To Be by Ryan North, Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman, Radium Girls by Kate Moore, Young and Damned and Fair by Gareth Russell, The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco, Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde, and The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden
2018: I finished my first year and started my second year of grad school, getting married smack dab in the middle of my summer term. The time for reading drastically went down, but I managed to read way more than expected. Some favorites include: The Prince and the Dressmaker by Jen Wang, The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, Peril at End House by Agatha Christie, The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton, Sea Witch by Sarah Henning, the Lockwood and Co. series by Jonathan Stroud, Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid, Daughters of the Winter Queen by Nancy Goldstone, and Howl’s Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones
2019: This was a Hell Year for me, with my migraines reaching new heights, and I spent a lot of time listening to audiobooks because it was the only thing I could do. Some books I loved last year were: Beyond the Hundred Kingdoms by Rod Espinosa (The Courageous Princess #1), Sera and the Royal Stars #1-5, Red White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston, Ninth House by Leigh Bardugo, Over the Top by Jonathan van Ness, At Bertram’s Hotel by Agatha Christie, Her Royal Spyness by Rhys Bowen, Code Girls by Liza Mundy, In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan, and god, so many more, so I’ll leave it there because I could go on for a long time (2019 was a good year for books for me because I stuck by my policy of putting down books I wasn’t enjoying, even if it was just because I wasn’t feeling them at that moment)
For a more complete list of 2010-2019, feel free to check out my goodreads (and send me a friend request if you want)!

Men’s silent support as a bystander of sexual violence
Daniel Suarez, Freelance Writer October 16, 2019
Men are complacent while sexual assault continues to affect millions of Americans every year. Women understand that combating this issue means actively working toward solutions, and prevention starts with men keeping other men in check.
Sexual violence and misconduct are not rare occurrences on college campuses and it extends to a much wider range of predatory behavior. According to a 2015 Washington Post/Kaiser Family Foundation poll, one in five college women say they were sexually assaulted.
On Sept. 25, a female student at Cerritos College confronted a male peeper in the women’s locker room of the campus’ kinesiology building at approximately 2:35 p.m.
The victim’s boyfriend waited outside the exit and engaged with the suspect, starting a brief altercation before the suspect managed to flee campus.
He was last seen heading northbound toward parking lot 1 and then westbound on Alondra Boulevard. He was described as a 5’6” white male, thick build and in his early 20s.
In mid-September, the LA Times reported that one in 16 women say that their first sexual experience was forced or coerced, based on a study conducted by JAMA Internal Medicine.
In addition, nearly every source of statistical data on sexual violence will also note that their figures are but a fraction of the assaults that actually occur, due to the fact that many assaults are never reported.
The Department of Justice estimates that only 20 percent of female, college-age victims report their assaults. Its non-female counterparts: 32 percent.
All falcons have been in our library and noticed the flashy sheet on the program table reading, “R.A.D. BASIC SELF DEFENSE FOR WOMEN.” R.A.D. is a wonderful program that has helped over 900,000 women learn basic self-defense nation-wide. However, I think an equally important program would be basic harassment and consent training offered to men.
While victims and perpetrators can fit any given demographic, the overwhelming majority of offenders are men. So, why aren’t there more men at the forefront of this epidemic?
Experts like Dr. Jackson Katz, an educator in rape prevention and anti-sexual assault activism, argues that past prevention practices are part of the problem.
In his educational documentary, “The Bystander Moment,” Katz references dozens of rape-prevention videos and public announcements informing women to be mindful of their surroundings, carry weapons, walk-in pairs, walk with men or even what is and is not safe to wear.
The issue with these tactics is that they fail to address the true sources of this violence. A CDC study says 98 percent of women reported a male perpetrator. It begs the question, are the current preventative methods effective at stopping men from committing harassment, stalking and rape?
Something to consider is that only eight states– California, Hawaii, New Jersey, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and West Virginia– require schools to teach consent, and only 24 states require sexual education to be taught at all. Children are growing up without ever having learned about consent, whether to give or recognize it. s
Also, reducing risk factors for one’s self may be beneficial at thwarting a perpetrator, but all these countermeasures don’t account for eight out of 10 assaults that are committed by someone known to the victim.
That is where Jackson Katz argues that prevention starts. He talks about using “the bystander approach.” In this context, the bystander is anyone who is not the perpetrator or the victim in a crime.
He wants to help by encouraging men to rise above the bystander and to challenge these predatory behaviors at every degree, not just when a crime is occurring.
“So, for example,” Katz discusses in his TedTalk, “if you’re a guy and you’re in a group of guys playing poker, talking, hanging out, no women present, and another guy says something sexist or degrading or harassing about women, instead of laughing along or pretending you didn’t hear it, we need men to say, ‘Hey, that’s not funny. that could be my sister you’re talking about, and could you joke about something else?’”
Katz suggests that by mustering up the courage and the strength to speak out against our peers, bystanders are effectively demonstrating that they do not tolerate that type of misconduct. They are alienating those behaviors and creating social pressure in a positive direction.
He believes that if all men were to practice this accountability, “We’ll see a radical diminution of the abuse. Because the typical perpetrator is not sick and twisted. He’s a normal guy in every other way, isn’t he?”
The majority of these offenders are acquaintances or friends, someone that the victim did at once perceive to be just a ‘normal guy.’ It isn’t always the creeps caught lurking in the women’s locker rooms, it’s hiding in with predatory banter rampant in the men’s locker room. We as men can’t risk normalizing this behavior for perpetrators. Obviously, we can’t trust other guys to distinct crude humor from believing in rape culture.
The core of Katz’s principles and prevention methods is to promote male involvement because this is clearly not just a “women’s issue.”
Young boys and men are also sexually assaulted at a high rate, yet women are their voices in this movement. How can one say this is not a men’s issue when 88 percent of children abused report male perpetrators.
Conservative media propagates the idea that male feminists are weak or somehow not as masculine as other men. This notion is ridiculous.
The world needs more men who have the courage to break out of the role of a bystander.
When male friends and peers are showing that aggressive sexual behavior or are aligned with the perceptions of rape culture, men need to call them out and firmly say, “I do not accept that talk/behavior. Stop.”
The Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network website claims that every 73 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted, and every nine minutes, the victim is a child. Sexual violence impacts the lives of countless victims and their families.
I ask you, Falcons, if it were your little sister or brother, son or daughter, parent or friend would you still tolerate those rape jokes?

Chapter 16:
Beverly is walking away from his doorstep when Hannibal pulls into the driveway. The dogs are going nuts inside, and Will uses that as the perfect distraction to avoid her bemused expression at seeing him get out of his therapist’s car.
The dogs rush about, and Buster frantically sniffs at him, begging treats. Will crouches to rub his belly, and he stares at the toe of Beverly’s shoe just at the corner of his eye. Beverly has always been a surefire read, a genuine one. She has something to say, and she’s radiating with an energy of something bordering antagonistic.
Will imagines his walls, where they rise high. He can’t handle channeling her anger right now. He has his own, something a potent bled of antagonistic and afraid all in one.
“Was wondering where you were.”
“I didn’t know you knew where I lived.”
“Do you know where I work?”
They both smile, and she accepts Buster’s affection and excitement, reaching down to scratch behind his ears.
“I’m getting insight into the rogue empath that Jack asked me to look into. He pulled me away for something else, but I’ll be back to hunting Dolarhyde soon, promise.”
It was a shitty promise, but he wasn’t feeling too awful about it.
“Bull shit, you’re coming out with me,” she replies easily, and she picks Buster up, much to his delight. “We haven’t gone out for a beer in awhile.”
“Now isn’t exactly…”
“Will and I were going to go out to dinner, actually. Would you care to join us, then go to drinks after?” Hannibal cuts in smoothly. His smile is as warm as his tone, and Will barely manages to repress a look of utmost disdain. He really doesn’t have time for this shit.
“Where were you thinking of going?”
“I haven’t had taken either of you to an excellent Greek restaurant just a on the edge of Baltimore. Are there any allergies I should be aware of?”
There are no allergies to fear, and the plan is set. The dogs make their rounds, and Will apologetically ushers them back into the house, giving them an extra treat each on the way out. They take Hannibal’s car, and maybe it’s a calculative move on Hannibal’s part as much as a political one because now someone is less likely to kill him if they think he has company over for the evening.
Beverly is quiet only through the appetizer. She seems to be observing as much as she is enjoying the ambiance of an artificial waterfall in the corner, as well as the tangy scent of olive oil and vinaigrette. That buzzing energy sits with a cloud around her, and Will imagines her leaning in with aggression, hearing something she’s not entirely pleased about.
He blinks away the thought, the Dream. If he looks too closely, he’ll fall in, and sometimes falling in is scary when you’re not quite sure where you’ll land. These days, it’s unsettling enough that he can’t account for how he’ll react once he’s inside, either.
Just Mr. Jackson, now.
Will picks at his cloth napkin idly, and Hannibal informs them of the best of the menu, along with some of the recipes he’s attempted to replicate. The air hums with socialites’ laughter and the clatter of fine china. Live music plays, Beverly hums along. It’s the setting to a perfect scene of three friends from wildly varying lifestyles coming together, and if he was in more control of himself and his surroundings, Will would have laughed out loud at it.
“Sometimes, Will, I think it’s a shame that you can’t eat meat. Some of the flavors Greek cuisine bring out linger in a way that is difficult to mimic in other dishes.”
“They have a roast lamb that I’m going to have to devour,” Beverly says by way of agreement. Her eyes lighten at something, and she taps the menu pointedly. “This was a good suggestion, Dr. Lecter.”
“I’m happy you could come along.”
“Well this guy usually makes a point to clam up and avoid social situations, so this is one of the few times I get to have a conversation with the illustrious Will Graham outside of work,” Beverly says with a laugh.
It’s light, not unkind. Will manages a smile and accepts the wine from the waiter as he returns. The waiter’s eyes linger, focus on his gloves still on inside the restaurant. Will tucks his hands under the table and waits for him to leave. While empaths aren’t hated within society, they aren’t entirely enjoyed, either. He can sense the immediate assumption and judging.
Far different from the taxi driver that supposed him to be cold but far too polite to voice it.
“Have you been waiting for a moment to question him extensively on something?” Hannibal asks.
“What’s on your mind?” Will asks distractedly, looking back to them.
Sometimes, he thinks about how Hannibal had looked, standing so close to him in the house of mirrors. Perhaps he Dreamed it, something his mind created because it wanted to be, and yet; there was something in the way he spoke words that would be treason should Jack Crawford hear them, and here he was ensuring that Will was in a position to be protected. His question now is much the same, and Will swears he can see that same hint of hunger as he studies Beverly with a keen attention to her squared shoulders despite the casual setting.
I’m fond of you.
“I was wondering what your thoughts were on the empath Jack’s having you track on the side.”
Can you see?
“What do you mean?” Will frowns.
“I just want to hear what you have to say,” she says, but that’s not quite how it sounds.
“I don’t think that’s true,” he retorts, and it grants him a laugh.
“You’re going to probably think I’m an ass hole after this,” she warns. “But I like taking things head on.”
“I’ll live,” Will promises, taking a sip of white wine. It is light, buttery on the palate as the server said when he first suggested it. He notes Beverly tracking it, and he forces a smile.
“When you first put your hands in the victim’s chest cavity, afterwards you described this as being some sort of homage to you. You said that the person asked you if you could see.”
He thinks of Slowinski, how his life hangs in the balance of whether or not Dolarhyde can find him. He tastes the bitter burn of monkshood, and it takes another long sip of wine before he can sound perfectly normal.
“It was a disorienting experience, but I recall” he says. Barriers. Compartmentalize. “What about it?”
She takes a sip of her wine –to steady herself, Will notes –and she accepts a plate and an offering of hummus from Hannibal. “The second time, you tell Jack he’s an empath, but you make no mention of this person saying anything specifically. Just that they were weaponizing their gift.”
Will could see where this was going. He busies his hands with his food, and he savors the warmth of the naan in his palms.
“Did he say anything that time? Or did it go from him reaching out to you to nothing at all?”
One thing Will both loves yet loathes is Beverly Katz’s tenacity for diving right to the point. Maybe, if Will hadn’t yet felt such a distinctive…need to protect this person in the moment, odd as it was, he’d tell her the words ringing in his head, nudging, pushing? And yet it would be a disservice, somehow, to tell her how protective, almost endearing it was that in the midst of all of this someone is attempting to save him from himself. From the institution that holds him.
He can’t quite say it like that to Jack, though. That’s a surefire way to fail his psyche-evaluation. To retirement.
To turning out like Dolarhyde.
“He likely lost interest when I didn’t respond. I think Jack was right to pull me. No action led to boredom, so he’s escalating,” Will says, swiping the bread through the hummus. He won’t look at her eyes.
He’d hissed to Lecter that the rogue empath was taunting him. It seemed Hannibal had kept his secret, left it there among the distorted glass and tilting halls.
“Do psychopaths do that? Or rogue empaths, for that matter?” Beverly asks, confused.
“I suppose it’s possible,” Hannibal admits, cutting in smoothly. “It depends on the ultimate intentions of the empath. Are they attempting to draw Agent Graham out specifically, or are they comfortable so long as they have someone’s attention?”
“I guess that’s what I’m wondering if you gleaned something the second time. I’m confused that it’s so…contrasting from the first time they struck.”
Will polishes off the rest of the wine and tears into the hummus with a single-minded vengeance. “That, and you had to ensure that if I drank tonight, it wasn’t alone.”
She snickers rather than blusters, and maybe that’s why he likes her, for a neurotypical.
“If he strikes again, get me there asap, and you’ll get the reaction in real time so you trust the source,” he suggests. “I’m thinking back now, and what I said in the moment would have been the most honest. In the moment, we say what we see, we say what we feel. If that’s what I said, that’s what I said.”
“Thanks for the permission,” she replies after a beat, saluting him with her glass. “Now, I’ll make up for the interrogation with a round of drinks after dinner. You’re always a good sport, Graham.”
It’s not alcoholism if he drinks with others. Will allows himself to relax.
It’ll look good right before the evaluation.
-
He’s drunk by the time Hannibal safely returns them to his humble abode. Everything is slippery, falling away, and he thinks of the first time he watched a fish die. How his father hit it, and he’d barfed later, unable to peel the death from his eyes.
“Are you comfortable walking by yourself, Will?” Hannibal asks, and everything’s damp to the touch. Will isn’t sure if he sounds angry or if he’s amused, and gloved hands tuck themselves into pockets. Beverly had gone home in an Uber, promising to pick up her car in the morning. If she felt liquor as much as Will currently did, she was going to regret her life choices in the morning. He would, too, but right now he feels nice. Things feel nice. Damp, but nice. Why damp? He inhales, and the air is wet. He wonders if he’s thinking too much about that fucking fish. How it gaped, staring, dying.
“Yes, thanks, Dr. Lecter.”
“Please, call me Hannibal.”
Will likes the feel of that, how it compresses in his chest and makes his heart constrict. He thinks of how close they’d pressed together in the wardrobe, his cheek to the woolen coat, and Hannibal had held him so tightly.
He’s drunk, and it sounds like a god damn dream. He needs to hold it together but he can’t, and this was the sort of drunk he’d once told Hannibal about, the kind of drunk where being an empath wasn’t so bad. The dangerous kind. The kind where reality can be a dream, the dream being a life where one could touch someone whenever they wanted.
He doesn’t often think about touching people, but dreams are like that. You want something you don’t allow yourself to normally think of. You long for it. You hope for it.
“Dreams,” he manages to say –out of all of that –and he follows Hannibal into the house, taking his jacket off and allowing it to hang in the hallway. “How did you follow me into my headspace? I thought to ask at the time, but I…”
He inhales the taste of Hannibal Lecter’s home, and he trails off, studying the warm tone and how it continues to constrict his heart, panging tight and hungry. He wonders what Alana would say, if she could see him now. Obsessed, indeed.
“You grabbed my hand. I’ve heard it sometimes possible with E-2’s, so I supposed it plausible with an E-3. It’s never happened to me before, but it’s an experience I’ll never forget. I thought to thank you for it after, but it seemed a tasteless thing to thank you for.”
Hannibal leads him straight to the guest bedroom. It makes sense, given how he struggles up the stairs, but it makes Will think of how closely they’d been pressed, how lightly he’d been touched. Fuck, he’s too drunk. He can’t handle the overwhelming sense of his own feelings at the moment. He’s once again grateful he can’t sense anything from Hannibal.
He’d eaten monkshood within the shabby shelter of Will’s crumbling brain. Hannibal Lecter truly was something else.
He wants to say as such, but he forgets to, somewhere between shuffling into a spare set of pajamas and having a glass of water forced down. He watches Hannibal’s ease, how his vision wavers in and out but still continues to fixate solely on him.
Alana thought of it as obsession. Will wonders what Hannibal would think of his breaking into his office.
“You didn’t tell them what I said about the empath,” he recalls, just before Hannibal leaves the room.
Hannibal pauses and acknowledges it with a tilt of his head. Will’s vision swims, and he fully accepts he will be vomiting in the morning. “I am in your corner, Will. I wouldn’t have you doubt that.”
A rogue empath hunting him down to make him Become wouldn’t look good while his mind crumbled as he chased Dolarhyde. Hannibal is protecting him.
“Do you remember when you asked about my sex life, Dr. Lecter?” Will asks, unprompted.
Hannibal’s amused, and Will’s too drunk to yet feel shame. “Good night, Will.”
“No, I’m going somewhere with this. For your study of empathy.”
There’s something about Hannibal, how he looks at Will. Sometimes Will thinks it’s that he’s intrigued or amused, or he wonders if he is a puzzle that the doctor is trying to put together. Perhaps there is something less professional in how his eyes darken perceptively, but this is the sort of thing that is dangerous for Will. He’s only feeding off of his own emotions, and his own emotions are terrible at best and terrifying at their worst.
“I spoke of being able to numb myself enough that another person’s emotions and skin didn’t overwhelm me.”
Hannibal’s smile is lethal. “I recall.”
“This is how drunk I have to be in order to bear it.”
Hannibal takes that information with the same expression he had when he first found Will stumbling through the hallways of the house of mirrors –hunger. Something a little wicked, and Will thinks of bare hands passing over poetry, tasting the first sense of the good doctor for who he was behind such a normally modest façade.
Will falls into a drunken stupor that could be called sleep, if it wasn’t for such wonderful Dreams.
-
He dreams Hannibal is behind his sturdy walls. They rise high, and the stag paces along the tree line, watching. Somehow, the space feels bigger, a little more room for another row of herbs to grow. The poisoner and the healing hand. The air has a hint of thyme.
He isn’t sure how they are naked together, only that they are. There is something in the way of his dreams that he blinks, and he is there, as though it always was. Then he blinks again and it is another place that he always was, but one thing that is for certain is that Hannibal is there, his kiss is enough to get drunk off of; Will is certainly drunk off of it, and it is to the early morning he wakes, still drunk, puking into the first toilet he can find.
He thanks whatever God is listening at the moment that he managed to get to a toilet in time. He’s not quite sure he’d live down the shame of having to clean vomit off of Hannibal Lecter’s woven rug that belonged somewhere in a museum rather than someone’s floor.
His dreams pass over his eyes, but mornings are the best times to forget dreams. They become hazy, odd, and as he digs through the cupboards and is relieved to find mouthwash, Will is able to convince himself that he didn’t have wildly inappropriate dreams about his therapist, that he didn’t dream that they pressed monkshood to one another’s lips, that they didn’t dare and share a kiss.
It takes another round of dry-heaving and a good scrubbing of cold water to his face, but Will Graham walks out of the guest bathroom having managed to do what most people are able to do with dreams –forget them entirely. He thinks instead of the row of thyme that’d sprouted since his last trip into the bone arena of his skull.
“How are you feeling?” Hannibal asks the moment Will walks into the kitchen.
He’s already prepared a breakfast that was surely made with drinking in mind, a healthy helping of grease wrapped in lemon and honey-glazed salmon with eggs on the side. Will accepts it and sits up to the bar where Hannibal is busy with finishing his cup of coffee, newspaper in hand.
“Nothing I haven’t felt before,” Will reassures him.
“Were you ill?”
It’s a nice way of asking if he vomited. He shrugs a shoulder and focuses instead on the scents of the breakfast, testing the water. Is it safe to eat? The lingering flavors sit in the back of his throat before he swallows them down and deems them safe.
“Anything good?” Will asks, nodding to the paper.
“I woke thinking about your killer,” Hannibal replies, and he sets the paper down, smoothing the creases along the article he’s reading. “He’s made the front page.”
It’s the house of mirrors where Randall Tier was found. Police tape sections it off despite the fact the body is long gone and the stains are removed. The scene was a symbol, but the location in of itself is irrelevant because it was only a prop, used merely to mock Will as his mind attempts to rend itself in two.
Will remembers vaguely mentioning the killer, but it’s like attempting to look through a windowpane in a downpour. Everything is streaked, grey somehow, and he absentmindedly takes a bite of food, gloved hand gripping the fork with just a little too much pressure.
“Why did you wake thinking about him?”
“You never explained why you thought he was taunting you.”
Will chews the salmon to a paste before he swallows. “Why didn’t you tell them what I said?”
“Because I first wanted to understand what you said,” says Hannibal without missing a beat. He tracks Will’s next bite, lips pressed to a flat line. “How can I relay something I myself don’t know?”
Will manages another two bites before he thinks he can explain himself in a way that doesn’t make him sound just mentally unstable enough for Hannibal to turn him in. Despite the richness of the food, it’s not overwhelming. The tightness in his stomach seems to be hunger rather than nausea.
“He spoke to me,” he says, spearing a bite of egg.
“You heard him?”
He glances up and studies the curiosity on Hannibal Lecter’s face. So perfectly neutral, and Will is tempted to remove his gloves just to reach out his bare hands and maybe see something for once.
“With noise and clarity.”
“What did he ask you?”
“He asked if I could see.”
Can you see?
“What is it he wanted you to see?” Hannibal wonders, and he presses his palms to the warm coffee cup. He leans back against the counter and props himself up, a generally rumpled appearance for the good doctor.
This takes somewhat longer for Will to share, and he forces a few more bites of salmon down, the lemon bitter but welcome on his tongue.
“Myself.”
Hannibal’s head tilts just slightly to the side, but the corners of his eyes tighten, and Will can see that hint of hunger, of craving for something.
I’m fond of you.
“Did you see yourself in the house of mirrors? Or did you see yourself in Randall Tier?”
“Both. I…Randall Tier is the house of mirrors. Every time he contorted himself into some shape that wasn’t his, every time he made himself into something else for every person he came across, I’ve done something like that.”
Hannibal’s laugh was light, not unkind. “You have refused to contort yourself to many of us.”
“No, but I can’t help but take just enough of everyone along with me that I can’t separate it anymore. He…he knows how Hobbs…”
He doesn’t want to say it. How he and Hobbs are the same, even now with him six feet under. He needs to see Abigail today, needs to prepare for the evaluation. He needs to see Abigail, but in his most terrifying dreams he is Abigail –but aren’t they? They both died that day, died then returned not completely whole. Maybe there is something to the thought, that he has to see her because it seems to be the only way he can marginally feel whole.
“What does he gain from making you see? What is he wanting from you?”
Will finishes the eggs and lets the tines of the fork drag through the honeyed sauce. That is perhaps what is the most terrifying aspect of it, alongside somehow sympathizing with the monster murdering these people. Tools, he reminds himself. He thinks of these people as tools.
“He wants me to see what they’re trying to make me become,” he admits, and this isn’t like before when fear and adrenaline forced him to be intimate and confined in tight spaces with Hannibal. It’s a quiet, immaculate kitchen, nothing in the world to distract him from honestly apart from his own blunt, stubborn refusal. “I think that…that this person is trying to save me from dying at the hands of the FBI. I think he knows something that we don’t.”
He chances a look to Hannibal’s face. It’s contemplative, his brow furrowed as he makes quick work of wiping down the counter where his mug left a ring of fog on the granite. Hazy, grey streaks of dreams come, unprompted, and Will wonders if he managed to mention that the night before, or if he’d said something otherwise embarrassing that’s caused the talk this morning.
He finishes his plate, and there’s something bordering on domestic as Hannibal takes it to rinse it in the sink.
“Why didn’t you feel comfortable telling me then?”
Will thinks of the hunger in Hannibal’s eyes that day, that tenseness as though he’d been prepared to hold Will there until he fucking talked. “I wasn’t sure if I could trust you.”
Hannibal’s smile is graceful that time. He offers coffee and makes short work of preparing he grounds, fresh from this morning. “You trust me now, though?”
“Dr. Lecter –”
“Hannibal.”
“Hannibal,” Will corrects, “you literally have every reason in the world to call Jack Crawford right now and have me arrested for at least four felonies. Why haven’t you?”
Hannibal doesn’t miss a beat, focused on the espresso machine. “I’ve already told you that, Will. I’m fond of you.”
“Yeah, well,” Will huffs, “I’m fond of you, too.”
And then it’s said, and it’s too big for the room they’re sitting in. It’s too big for his lungs that quite suddenly deflate, and it’s too big for the way he’s entirely sure Hannibal’s smile is more telling than it should be. He likes that smile, though. There’s something nice about it, and there’s something nice about not quite being able to read him despite the complaints to the contrary. Dr. Lecter is interesting. Dr. Lecter is different.
Dr. Lecter is staring at him.
He offers Will the cup of espresso, his lips curved ever-so-slightly. “Will you drink this without your gloves on?”
For a wild moment, Will thinks of dragging his hands over Lecter’s office, craving every inch and marveling at the vast sensations. How close he felt, yet far enough away to only catch imprints. And now he’s suddenly being given permission? He wants to rip his gloves off, touch his palms to the surface of the kitchen where Hannibal so clearly loves to work; wants to press his palms to cheeks with hollowed, cruel edges that seem sharp enough to cut.
If Alana could see him now…
He removes his gloves slowly so that the good doctor can see and understand the motion. Then, he reaches out and accepts the piping hot cup, small enough that his palms encase it.
There is a hunger there, something that drags across his ribs as a bow along cello strings. He blows on the cup, both resigned and wickedly excited for the way it’s going to burn all the way down. When his lips press to the edge of the cup, there’s a wild feeling that he’s somehow sharing a kiss, and without anymore preamble, he tilts his head back and sucks the piping hot drink down.
When he looks back at Hannibal, there’s an intimate expression on the planes of his face that suggests Will had done everything Hannibal could have hoped for. Will’s palms are still tingling, stinging from the heat, but it compares nothing to the fire in his throat that claws down to his stomach. He has the briefest moment of indulging in a bad habit, and it’s difficult to say if he picked that up from the cup, or if it’s something much his own.
Either way, he’s drowning in it, that feeling. Something that is pronounced enough it lingers long after the heat does, after his throat stops complaining from the onslaught.
“To Abigail?” Will suggests hoarsely, when Hannibal makes no comment.
“To Abigail,” Hannibal agrees.

The campaign ad, approved by Johnson and paid for by his Senate campaign committee as he seeks reelection, laid blame for the “latest mass murder” on President Joe Biden’s immigration policies. “Fifty-three people, including five children, were murdered by human traffickers because Joe Biden’s open border policy is facilitating the multibillion-dollar business model of some of the most evil people on the planet,” the ad continued, referencing an abandoned truck trailer recently discovered in San Antonio, Texas. “Human, sex, and drug trafficking are out of control because of Democrat governance.” The day after the shooting, an executive from one of the companies contracted to produce the campaign radio ad, Katz Radio Group, frantically notified colleagues to suspend it. The following emails were provided to The Intercept by a source close to the Katz Radio Group on condition of anonymity to avoid reprisal." *** The largest online progressive news show in the world. As a survivor, writer, and sexual abuse survivor activist, I participate in and observe real life and online daily conversations on the topic of sexual violence. Hmmm, the topic of sexual violence — like it’s just a topic, not crimes that affect people for the rest of our lives. That change the very structure of our cells, of our brains. Simply a topic of conversation.
Not a polite dinner conversation topic, of course. Yet, still a topic people bring up regularly, because you see, everyone is an expert (I call them the ‘Should Have Dones) on what a victim of a horrific sexual crime Should Have Done after she was brutally raped, sexually molested, abused, or harassed (unless you’re in the political arena and then it’s referred to as ‘sexual misconduct,’ that vague, gray area that cannot be defined, making it easy for politicians to talk in their circles and loopholes, as they are wont to do).
I refer to victims of sexual crimes (including myself) as survivors. Personal choice. We are, and have every right to refer to ourselves as, victims. Society loves to call us victims, in the negative sense of the word. That’s mistake number one so let’s start there.
Mistake #1: Victim Blaming Sexual Violence Survivors
‘Don’t be a victim,’ people spew at us. ‘Just get over it.’ ‘You just want the attention.’ Or my favorite (from a guy): ‘Why didn’t you just call 911? Seems easy enough.” (Well, I was only eleven at the time, and gosh well, 911 didn’t exist in 1975. Plus you know, the whole thing about how my abuser, the military dad next door, had a gun and had threatened to kill me and my baby sister if I told. So there’s that.)
Soooo easy.
One person on Twitter the other day said, ‘I’m not sure if I want to read your books. Are they an endless loop of hopeless reality, victim-mentality, woe-is-me? I prefer stories of go-getters!’
Funny thing is, I am a go-getter. I am ambitious. I’m pretty chill most days. I am also a victim of a serial child molester when I was eleven. Whether I ‘get over it,’ or talk about what happened and how I’ve dealt with it doesn’t change that he sexually abused me. I deal with that reality every day. It doesn’t define me — I don’t wear a label across my forehead, however, I don’t hide it anymore either. Shame no longer owns me.
If you look at the language people use, the focus is on the victim (I’m purposely using the word victim here so stay with me). Don’t be a victim. Get over it. Move on. As if we, the victims of crimes, have Done Something Wrong. As if discussing it means I’m still in victim-mode — which I’m not (because people do want to know); yet people assume that any victim of a sexual crime who discusses their harrowing real-life experience must be looking for attention because why else would we discuss something so private?
Here’s the bigger question: Why do you suppose people focus so much on the victim instead of the perpetrator? I’ve had years to observe this and here’s my completely non-scientific, non-random, non-controlled, non-trial, half-opinion, half-experience-based conclusion:
There’s more than one conclusion, depending on the person’s most treasured belief system. It’s uncomfortable. People don’t know what to say. They don’t want to get into the mind of an abuser, so to avoid that, they pick on the victim. They bully us. We’re accessible, easy targets. Defensive attacks are easier than compassion.
Victims are easy to blame because it’s harder and scarier to connect in any way with the mind of a criminal rapist or child molester — there might be something lurking there they don’t want to see — themselves.
There’s another school of thought (much more scientific):
“Our tendency to blame the victim is ultimately self-protective. It allows us to maintain our rosy worldview and reassure ourselves that nothing bad will happen to us. The problem is that it sacrifices another person’s well-being for our own. It overlooks the reality that perpetrators are to blame for acts of crime and violence, not victims.” (Source: Psychology Today)
I’d really love to see that paradigm shift. Instead of asking victims of sexual crime anything — because we the public are entitled to know nothing about the victim — let’s ask perpetrators why they perpetrate crimes against others. Is it anger? Is it hormonal? Is it societal? Is it mental? How can we fix this?
We know it’s not about sex. We know it’s about power and control. Examining power and patriarchal structures and how we break these down is a start. According to the latest studies, here’s what we do know about men who rape and sexually assault women:
Heavy drinking, perceived pressure to have sex,
a belief in “rape myths” — such as the idea that no means yes
A peer group that uses hostile language to describe women.
Men who are highly aroused by rape porn.
Narcissism magnifies odds that men will commit sexual assault and rape.
What about the idea that rape is about power over women? Some experts feel that research into hostile attitudes toward women supports this idea.
Rejection in high school and of looking on as “jocks and the football players got all the attractive women.”As these once-unpopular, often narcissistic men become more successful, [he] suspects that “getting back at these women, having power over them, seems to have become a source of arousal.” (Source: New York Times)
In the wake of the Kavanaugh confirmation hearings and the sexual assault revelation by Dr. Blasey Ford:
“This is what we will expect from the congressional committee:
She will likely be asked to detail every moment of the alleged attack. How much she had to drink. Why she went upstairs. What she was wearing.” (Source: Washington Post)
And she was. That’s exactly what happened.
People feel righteous and justified, as if her drinking or clothing gives Kavanaugh a pass for his (alleged) ‘misconduct.’
**Postscript: we all know the result of that entire situation.
How does what any woman/person wears or drinks justify someone else’s criminal behavior? It doesn’t. In any situation. It simply doesn’t.
Mistake #2: The Language We Use
As I mentioned above, in Western society we focus on the victim:
Mary is a battered woman.
Rachel is a CSA (childhood sexual abuse) survivor.
Joe was raped.
Where are the perpetrators (usually men) who did the abusing in these sentences?
(For the purpose of this discussion, I’ll use men as the perpetrator, though I acknowledge #NotAllMen are abusers so please, let’s not go down that road. It is a well-known and researched fact that men do the majority of abusing (please read the full linked report for more data*) — of women, children, and other men. My point here is not to bash men; simply provide an example. I’m not in any way condemning men exclusively and I acknowledge that women can be abusers too, so everyone breathe.)
*Sex of Perpetrator in Lifetime Reports of Sexual Violence:
Most perpetrators of all forms of sexual violence against women were male. For female rape victims, 98.1% reported only male perpetrators. Additionally, 92.5% of female victims of sexual violence other than rape reported only male perpetrators. For male victims, the sex of the perpetrator varied by the type of sexual violence experienced. The majority of male rape victims (93.3%) reported only male perpetrators. For three of the other forms of sexual violence, a majority of male victims reported only female perpetrators: being made to penetrate (79.2%), sexual coercion (83.6%), and unwanted sexual contact (53.1%). For non-contact unwanted sexual experiences, approximately half of male victims (49.0%) reported only male perpetrators and more than one-third (37.7%) reported only female perpetrators (data not shown).
**For an in-depth discussion on gender symmetry, look at the work of Sherry Hamby, Ph.D.
(“Violence against women, men, and children is a men’s issue, not a women’s issue” — it’s not even a gender issue, according to Jackson Katz. Watch his TEDTalk — an excellent summary of how gendered language is endemic in our society and how we view violence against women and others, perpetuated primarily by men.)
There’s also an assumption (never a good thing) that survivors, especially female survivors, are liars. We must somehow want attention. Women must have ulterior motives for reporting sexual crimes (which violate our civil rights).
Look at the language people use when describing the multitudes of women who accused Bill Cosby in a criminal trial — they must want money or fame — misunderstanding there’s no money or fame to be had, as many of them remained anonymous, he was only convicted for the crimes against one woman, and a criminal trial does not award money.
This is especially true if the victim was drinking or drugged (more on that below). As Jim Hopper mentions in his work, our brains are flooded with chemicals during any kind of intense, traumatic situation, in particular during a sexual assault:
This part of our brain is responsible for executive functions, including focusing attention where we choose, rational thought process and inhibiting impulses. You are using your prefrontal cortex to read this article and absorb what we’ve written, rather than getting distracted by other thoughts in your head or things going on around you. But in states of high stress, fear or terror like combat and sexual assault, the prefrontal cortex is impaired–sometimes even effectively shut down–by a surge of stress chemicals. (Source: Lisak & Hopper, TIME Ideas, 2014)
Mistake #3: Expecting/Demanding a Hero Story
Like the reader above who expected my book to be about a woman who pulls herself up by the bootstraps and conquers the world, we are conditioned, particularly here in the West, to expect and might I even say demand, a mythic hero’s journey. From sitcoms to TV movies to series to Marvel and DC Universe to epics to The Olympics every two years — we are spoonfed heroes journeys at every turn.
Look at Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter — classic if clichéd examples of The Hero’s Journey (with male protagonists and male best friend side-kicks…plus the the oh-so-important scrappy, brilliant yet with not enough screen time female secondary character, who was never completely fleshed out as well as the guys and oh, always became prettier as the series wore on. Think Hermione — whom I love, yet still.). We do love a flawed underdog who grows to a champion!, finds the strength within themselves despite difficult circumstances, defeats the bad guy (ta-da!), and ultimately gets the girl…and, of course, yes, and they lived happily ever after.
Survivors of sexual violence are my heroes. We get up and live each and every day despite living with some combo of anxiety, depression, flashbacks, dissociation, nightmares, insomnia, triggers, hypersensitivity, hypervigilance, migraines, any number of immune disorders, addiction, and all kinds of other shit we are at higher risk for solely because we were a victim of sexual violence at some point in our lives.
PTSD is common in anywhere from one-third to one-half of sexual abuse survivors six months after the attack(s). 94% experience symptoms within the first 24 hours.
If and when we choose to share our survivor experience, we don’t owe anyone a hero story.
Life is hard enough as it is. Navigating it as a survivor adds other layers ‘normals’ cannot possibly imagine. Your expectation that we must live our lives according to your heroic expectations is not our issue.
And if I (or other victims) are still in victim mode — so what? Some victims are so traumatized by the crimes against them, the effects are devastating:
some repeatedly attempt to kill themselves — and often succeed,
become addicted to drugs/alcohol (did you know 75% of addicts and 90% of alcoholics were sexually abused as children? Source: The Right Step),
develop mental health issues (personality disorders, OCD, anxiety, depression, body dysphoria,
have lifelong weight issues
are at higher risk of immune disorders
can retreat to another mental universe completely (e.g., DID or other personality disorders).
If struggling to get through each day is the best we can do — so what?? Who is anyone to judge us?
Mistake #4: The Perfect Victim Myth
People blame victims for not being perfect. If she wore that red dress, if she was drinking, if she didn’t fight back, if she met the guy and they had sex (how dare a woman want sex #gasp), if she was out late walking, if she was asleep in her own bed in a nightie or even naked in her own home! If, if, if.
When you first hear about a crime, it’s our natural curiosity to want to find out more. “What happened? Who was involved, what were the circumstances, is everyone okay?”
However, in a sexual violence situation, many people immediately ask, “What was she wearing? Was she drunk? Was she alone?” This is our go-to. Because it’s somehow her fault for being imperfect. She’s to blame for putting herself in the position to be victimized (and yes, I’m using this passive language on purpose).
Again, with the victim-blaming. Yet the perfect victim expectation goes far beyond that. We’ve all watched enough Hollywood tropes to have been brainwashed into thinking that victims should be thin, virginal, pretty, helpless creatures who are perfect in every way (good), OR they are vampy vixens dressed in leather whom we know have it coming because they ooze sex (bad).
In reality, women are not caricatures (surprise!) and are sexually violated at all stages of life and in all stages of clothing.
Cases have been dismissed entirely because the victim didn’t cry sufficiently or wasn’t hysterical enough (if you recall, PTSD used to be referred to as ‘shellshock’ for a reason). Our brains can react in a multitude of ways during and after sexual assault — see Jim Hopper’s comprehensive work to get the neuroscientific background in understandable terms. As Jim points out, investigators have to learn how to talk to victims differently based on the latest scientific studies on how the brain reacts to intense trauma.
Memory gaps are common — why? Because of the pre-frontal cortex impairment mentioned above. Details can be hazy and remain hazy. The best scientists in the world don’t know exactly why, yet lawyers, judges, and juries demand definitive proof a victim isn’t lying (and even with proof, rape kits are collecting dust. Again, whole other post).
No. Let’s discuss it. If there’s DNA present, the victim can undergo the process of having a rape kit done (commonly referred to as a SAK: Sexual Assault Kit). After being raped or sexually assaulted, a victim must again open themselves up to strangers to be intimately examined.
Then there’s this fact: Most kits are never tested unless there’s a criminal investigation. Go ahead, read that again.
Are all SAKs tested?
No. While there are a few cities and states that automatically test all sexual assault kits, in general, SAKs are not tested unless specifically requested by a law enforcement agency for a criminal investigation. There are a variety of reasons that a kit might not be tested including:
A decision by law enforcement due to a variety of reasons — such as not prioritizing sexual assault cases or a perceived lack of victim credibility or cooperation — not to further investigate the case.
A decision by law enforcement that the results of the kit would not be significant to the investigation. This occurs most often when the suspect does not deny physical contact but instead claims the contact was consensual.
Backlogged crime labs. Due to resource issues, some crime labs may take up to a year or longer to test a SAK.
Lack of funding for DNA analysis. Some law enforcement jurisdictions, including crime laboratories, are underfunded and may be unable to test every SAK. (Source: National Center for Victims of Crime)
Dissociation (aka, spacing out or acting differently) is common after an assault, sometimes for years — even decades (something I still experience now, forty-plus years after my abuse as a child).
I experienced dissociation each time my abuser molested me (not realizing that watching myself as he abused me was not abnormal). I dissociated frequently throughout high school and college — it was normal for me to watch myself from above. Now that I know what that feeling is (something I can do on command), I’m much more aware. Sometimes, though, it happens and I don’t realize it at all. My family knows, though. My guy says he can see me ‘going under.’
You may also find this PTSD visual helpful (Souce: Daily Cardinal) and read more on PTSD here.
As for whether a woman decides to drink, do drugs, wear whatever she wants, meet a guy for sex — she is allowed to do all those things and still does not deserve to be raped. No man deserves to be raped. No child deserves it. No LGBTQ-identifying person. No human.
A person is raped because someone raped them.
By accusing a survivor who is brave enough to come forward for not fitting into the perfect victim myth you’ve come to expect, or accusing them of lying, it’s as if we are all having the wrong argument. What we have here is a faulty car engine (the brain, which in truth isn’t faulty at all), yet you’re accusing, discrediting, and blaming the driver.
When in actuality, the one causing the entire mess is the guy who ran the car off the road.
Allegedly.
Mistake #5: Sexual Violence is Political
Social media is rife with conspiracy theories about the Ford/Kavanaugh situation — which I won’t dignify by going into here on this post. The #MeToo movement, which has brought forward incredible, heartbreaking, brave voices sharing horrific stories of sexual violence, is now being attacked as men vs. women, as right-wing vs those ‘heathen, liberal left’ (never mind the number of priests, GOP’ers identified as child molesters and rapists, Fox News?). Some of the people involved in spreading and believing these stories are tin-foil hat ridiculous.
Geez. See how easy even I lowered myself into the mud? It’s an ugly look, isn’t it? Mud-slinging makes dirty people. Dirty people spread more dirt.
Add to that the conspiracy theorists, fake news, fake accounts, Russian whatevers, bots, and fundamentalists on all sides…we might as well be rolling with the pigs…or is it dogs or fleas? Besides, shouldn’t you be writing instead of arguing politics on social media?)
Which is why I refuse to discuss politics and sexual violence together in the same tweet or post.* I won’t argue with anyone about sexual violence and politics. They are completely separate because my focus is and always will be on the survivor. And if you work with The Joyful Heart Foundation as I do or RAINN (also wonderful), you’ll see they are not political, either (except to help get funding for rape kit testing or more services for survivors).
Advocating is about helping others. Politicizing sexual violence negatively, to further some politician’s career, doesn’t help anyone.
(*If there’s a bill, contributions needed, or volunteering to help or fund services for survivors — then I’m all in to help out survivors).
Making what a survivor goes through, after any kind of assault, fit into some political party ideology is ludicrous to me.
Compassion and kindness are my ideology.
Mistake #6: Assuming All Victims of Sexual Violence Are Liars
One more, on the house.
As I already mentioned above, the other part of politicizing sexual violence is the assumption that all sexual violence survivors are liars (ONLY if the survivor is hurting your candidate). Why do you suppose this is? Because diehard party-line believers and supporters cannot afford to question their own familiar belief system (this topic brings in fallacies, which you can read more about here). Whole other post.
“Why didn’t she report? She had plenty of time!” Such an easy question to ask. So simple. As easy as asking a domestic violence survivor why she didn’t just leave, right? Surely, violent, criminal situations can be explained away with a tweet. I hope this sounds as ridiculous to you as it does to me, yet that’s what people demand from survivors, particularly women.
I’ve shared above how parts of the brain shut off during trauma. If the victim chooses to come forward immediately, investigators must be trained to question survivors appropriately, keeping this in mind. The victim may not answer in a way politicians or the public would ‘expect’ a perfect victim to answer — yet the knowledge of how the brain responds to trauma is not widely known or understood.
The general public is a different story altogether. Zero comprehension of the brain on trauma. Therefore, we see these brutal social media attacks ensue due to unsatisfactory answers to questions the public has no right to ask.
Shame is another reason. It can take decades for a survivor to speak publicly about their sexual trauma (if they ever do at all). It took me three and a half decades to write Broken Pieces and then Broken Places (Broken People will be available soon-ish).
Fear of retaliation (and considering 90% of sexual violence is perpetrated by someone we know, this is an incredibly valid fear). More specifics from RAINN:
Of the sexual violence crimes not reported to police from 2005–2010, the victim gave the following reasons for not reporting:
20% feared retaliation
13% believed the police would not do anything to help
13% believed it was a personal matter
8% reported to a different official
8% believed it was not important enough to report
7% did not want to get the perpetrator in trouble
2% believed the police could not do anything to help
30% gave another reason or did not cite one reason
Read more statistics about perpetrators of sexual violence.
I won’t go into the details of my own sexual abuse here, but I will share this: as someone who did report (eventually) and testified in two trials at the age of twelve (civil and military), I can tell you it was one of the most terrifying, humiliating, and shameful experiences I’ve ever had, facing the man who abused me, having to explain what he did to me while others scrutinized every excruciating, embarrassing detail for further questioning and cross-examination.
Sure, I was young. Younger than both my kids are now. Too young to know the words I was about to speak.
For the record, he got eighteen months.
