anyway some notes:

a bit of xueyi 101 to start out jic - the atk orb and break rope are the standard for her; her break effect to dmg% conversion A2 trace makes quantum dmg a joke whereas her sources of atk are very limited. build-wise as this freaky puppetcore weirdgirl crit/break hybrid she wants it all rly; both crit, BE and atk, but prioritizing crit until some sort of 1:2 (guides tend to put 60/120 as the baseline) is key.

S5 aeon is perfectly fine and its what i used to have on her, i pulled indelible promise in order to end the custody battle over aeon between her and DHIL lmao (+ new gacha 4* LCs in hsr are like new 4* charas luckily - indelible promise after its initial release patch in 2.0 is now a permanent offrate on all banners except for beginner, phew). the crit on it is especially nice, rly hope i get spooked with some superimpositions in the future.

she shouldnt be on glamoth anymore really - this showcase is with her on spd boots (as you can see. duh) and she does reach the 135 spd for the 1st glamoth buff requirement when with RM (which is every time i play her) so its fine, but as i swap to atk boots when with sparkle im sure you can see why it would be... suboptimal. problem is. well. look at her rope. still havent managed to roll a comparable salsotto one so 💀 we live with this.

her relics are still a bit scuffed (chest and both her atk and spd boots are. fine. but could be better) but since i often have fx and sparkle patching up her crit its fine for now.

also yes i shouldve unlocked those last few quantum dmg and BE traces ages ago but its not rly that impactful when her dmg% is already as high as it is with the amount of BE i have on her so oh well x)

obviously given her dependence on break xueyis far from an universal dps - i only use her in heavily quantum weak fights (or in SU where u can get blessings to spam her ult for the weakness ignoring attack) but when she gets to shine she shreds So hard i love her sm 🥰🥰

The bikers would often come by to the diner you worked at to have a feast or just a couple of refreshing drinks on their way. They were customers like everyone else and as long as they were overall behaving decently, you weren’t opposed to serving them their orders. 

It wasn’t the first time you caught their vice president – Rudy, staring at you. However, it wasn’t a rude or creepy kind of staring, no. The man seemed quite polite and he always tipped you well. He wasn’t handsy and smiled at you each time you served him his favorite dessert. You grew to have a tiny little crush on him.

So it wasn’t a big surprise when the president himself and Rudy’s best friend – Alejandro finally noticed you too (it didn’t take that long to be honest). And even regarding the circumstances, you didn't mind their attention. You felt... kind of special? An apple in the eyes of older men who found you pretty. What was wrong with that?

One evening, when the sun had set behind the horizon and only a few customers were left, Alejandro and Rudy decided to stop at the diner. They sat in the farthest booth in the corner, tall walls separating them from the rest of the restaurant.

I waffled a bit about making this but I don't have much else to be doing and it is only 10:30 in the morning and I already feel like I've been up for 22 hours so let's talk about Shu S3 versus Saria S3.

An important note I'm going to bring up here is that while Shu S3 is very good, it does technically lose out on heal coverage to Blemishine S3 under ideal circumstances. A Blemishine who is constantly attacking and taking pressure will cycle through her skill way faster than Shu ever will, even with her talent in play. It is a bit difficult to compare Blemishine's Offensive + Defensive recovery skills to an Automatic Recovery skill on principle though, and IMO the skills are meant to do different things. Blemishine's S3 is meant to turn her into an offensive threat while giving her the stats she needs to tank enemies. Shu is a healer and support unit. They aren't working on the same axis.

In looking at Shu's S3 compared to Saria's S3, I'm going to compare them directly. They are built in a lot of ways to do exactly the same things, with Shu being a much newer version of Saria's skill. I'll be comparing them on:

Range of their skills

SP Cost

Healing efficacy

Buffing capabilities

Support capabilities

Crowd Control

Range

If we compare the ranges of Shu's S3 to Saria's S3, Saria's range is bigger, having four more tiles of access than Shu. Shu does get the ability to cover a ton of tiles with her Sowing, however, so the range advantage is pretty marginal for Saria.

SP Costs

The biggest advantage for Shu is the SP costs of their skills. Saria's skill will be faster on deployment, taking only 10 seconds to charge compare to Shu's 15, but Shu's 45 SP cost on her S3 means it will be active a little less than twice as often as Saria's S3. This is huge for Shu, as one of Saria's problem is that she doesn't have great coverage with her S3, and so this skill often takes a back seat to S1 or S2 if you're using Saria for healing reasons.

Healing Efficacy

Shu blows Saria pretty much completely out of the water. She has a HPS of roughly 1,289 with her talent going at max power, and it's even higher if she's healing a target with under 50% HP. Saria's skill will usually only heal roughly 275 HP a second, bumping to 316 with her GUA-X module trait, and 286 HP a second with her GUA-Y module, and this is assuming she's been on the battlefield for the full 90 seconds she needs to reach that juicy passive +40% ATK buff. Shu's passive 85 HP/s regen and 17% Sanctuary really makes the comparison worse. Mitigation is damage you didn't need to heal after all.

Buffing Capabilities

Shu's advantage here is that she will buff operators no matter what damage type they are using: Physical, Arts, True, Elemental, they all benefit from Shu's buffs. Saria, however, provides better numbers for Arts damage, and this might initially seem like it shouldn't be true. For an Arts operator, Shu's buffs would give them an additional 56.25% DPS, which is better than Saria...by a very slight amount. But, this is assuming an operator has no ATK or ASPD buffs active at that time.

Let's take Haze for a minute as a clear example of this. Haze's normal DPS with her S2 active is 1,092.8 damage per second. Haze over the course of her skill deals about 25k damage, which is not too shabby for a 4-star! With Shu's buffs, her DPS will improve to 1,461.0, which is an impressive jump! However, it is only a 33.69% improvement on her damage, because the ATK and ASPD buffs get diluted by diminishing returns. Saria meanwhile always gives a 55% improvement on DPS, because her buff is a damage multiplier, which is applied after the other parts of the damage calculation.

So is Saria better for buffing Arts damage? The answer, genuinely, is that it depends. Saria will often give you the biggest numbers possible, but Shu has better cycle times with her buffs that Saria does. If you need your buffs to align better or you need them more often, Shu is definitely going to be the pick. If you need a big burst damage moment or your DPS points are far enough apart, Saria will be better.

Support Capabilities

Strictly speaking, neither S3 really supports outside of buffs, but the benefit from talents is important here. You need to compare Shu's Sowing with Saria's SP generation talent. Shu's tiles will give an 85 HP regen and 17% Sanctuary buff, while Saria will provide 1-2 SP every time she heals. This is another point where Saria really isn't strictly better or worse than Shu is. Shu's talent remains actively constantly, and provides an ok regen along with some damage mitigation. Saria's talent only applies if the target is healed (if they are at full SP, they do not gain SP) and can be tricky to set-up, but potentially triples the speed in which they will be able to access their skill. A common skill pairing is Saria and Shalem, which have great synergy with each other. Shalem's skill is Defensive Recovery, and burns most of his HP away. Shalem's HP is just high enough that he will recover most if not all of the SP he needs off of Saria's 10 heals, at which point he can activate his skill during the last 20 seconds and take full advantage of Saria's buff. Stages with DoT are great for Saria, who can pump an entire squad full of yummy SP.

Crowd Control Capabilites

Saria and Shu both have access to potent crowd control abilities, with Saria having access to a chunk movement speed reduction while Shu has access to her teleportation gimmick. Shu's teleportation is a bit difficult to understand from her description, but essentially, if an enemy steps onto a sowed tile while Shu has skill active, and then moves 2 tiles away from the original tile, they will be teleported directly back to where they started.

Two tiles seems like a lot, but remember that enemies typically enter a tile from its edge, and suddenly Shu's crowd control aspects become very powerful. If Shu has a sowed tile 2 tiles in front of the objective box, enemies will not be able to enter the objective box for the entire 30 seconds her skill is active. They'll just reach the edge of the box but not enter it before being teleported back. This makes Shu a much better crowd control option than Saria, although Saria is not bad by any means. This skill has a TON of unintended interactions with various boss and enemy gimmicks, on top of clustering enemies very tightly together and making them vulnerable to AoE and splash damage.

It's really good. I initially wrote this off as a funny gimmick ability but it's a great piece of crowd control and makes Shu a much more well rounded operator for having it.

Conclusion

It's often the case in gacha games, and typically in any long running game content, that after four and a half years, game pieces released by this point thoroughly outclass game pieces released at launch. Is Shu better than Saria? Yes, for the most part. But it is worth saying that Shu does not necessarily completely replace Saria. Saria has good niches to fit in as a support operator in her very powerful Arts damage buff and SP charging capabilities, but even more than that there is an entire conversation to be had about Saria's better ability to tank physical damage. Saria can have almost 1000 DEF with her talent at full power and has a 15% damage reduction on top of that.

In addition, Saria is definitely better at using her S1 than Shu is, thanks to her higher ATK and SP charging capabilities. It's not a huge niche but Saria's S1 packs a pretty potent punch that Shu's doesn't.

Shu's S3 is definitely mostly better, but Saria has moments where she shines and Shu does not.

Explanation: It’s a DPS focused class with an innate 80% reduction on ranged attacks. Adding damage feels like just removing the penalty and besides, most of the class already removes the damage reduction on skill activation. However, lots of the class has ~40 sp for skills with 0 initial sp, making set up a major issue for the class. Yes this would likely increase the amount of stages Thorns can trivialize, and speed up helidrop Truesilver Slash. I’m willing to accept this. Stats: +ASPD, +Atk

Level 2 effects options:

Obvious Theming: Apply cold on attack for x seconds.

Attack interval means she can’t freeze without support unless using S2, which should come up faster with the base effect. During S2 she becomes Stall Queen able to keep 1 enemy permafrozen, bound, and slowed or 2 enemies semi-perma stalled assuming they don’t just have a bind/freeze immunity. She still can’t do damage and doesn’t benefit from the Resistance debuff - but she could join the vaunted ranks of golden chalice IS and SSS with other characters like Ethan, Gnosis, and Leizi. Also it would be nice to have another cold-applying unit whose debuff is not relient on skills. Fails to justify the DPS tag.

Option 2: Enemies in range have their weight reduced by 1 (probably non-stacking - unless…) Takes advantage of her unique range characteristic to go all in on supporting another lane with a dangerous enemy that doesn’t want to be blocked. Primarily useful with S1, it would enable the perpetual Mantizone even more. — Send guys flying into the stratosphere with Weedy. Experience what it is like to finally have Weedy pushing strength or Angelina weight reduction since they still haven’t spooked you in 2 years. Justify the weird pivot by pointing to Break the Ice sliding mechanics. Allow more people to experience the joy of bullying Jesselton. Still fails to justify the DPS tag.

It's finally done and all put up nicely. This is a spreadsheet of all reasonable Core Caster DPS numbers compared against each other. I'm going to do my methodology below but there are currently 88 different DPS calcs and while I am about 80% sure these are all accurate, if you can find a mistake, please message me and show me where my calculation was off! I'll reblog this shortly to give some cool comparisons and numbers.

All numbers here are defined as if the enemy has both 0 DEF and 0 RES. Very few enemies have this defensive profile, but it provides a solid baseline for discussing damage and DPS. Keep in mind there are a number of scenarios where different operators will do more damage than others:

Operators who have the CCR-X Module will naturally do more damage versus enemies with RES than Operators without it.

Operators with RES shred in their kits (Haze, Eyjafjalla, Logos) will do more damage versus enemies with RES than other Operators.

Ceobe's Thresher talent gives her an additional instance of Arts damage that is a percentage of the target's DEF, so she will do a lot more damage versus high DEF targets. This is especially notable with her S2.

There are some minor edge cases. Qanipalaat's S2 picks up two enemies and will perform the AoE burst damage if either enemy dies, which will increase the damage of this skill. Logos' S1 also performs additional instances of Arts damage whenever an enemy is insta-killed by his skill, and this can trigger additional extra attacks from his talent. Since these are enemy dependent, they have not been counted.

DPS is calculated by (Attack Damage) / (Attack Interval). In some situations where an attack interval is not a number with a finite decimal, it can be calculated more easily by

(Attack Damage) * (100 + ASPD buffs) -------------------------------------------- (Attack interval * 100)

Cycle DPS is calculated somewhat differently, in that you need to know the number of attacks necessary during the skill's charge up period. Ho'olheyak's S1, for example, has a 7 SP cost, which means Ho'olheyak will attack 4 times before attacking a 5th time with her skill. One would sum the damage from her 4 attacks and her S1 attack, and then divide by the length of time it takes to perform the cycle, 1.6 seconds for 5 attacks, or 8 seconds total. Charge stacking DPS is not considered here.

Talents which are situational and not specifically enemy dependent will be calculated in a both on and off state. This is why Ho'olheyak has so many calculations.

Logos's DPS is complex because of his talent that provides an additional attack, as well as his innate ability to cause Necrosis Burst. A weighted average needs to be performed for all of his damage calculations as follows:

(Normal Attack Damage * 0.4) + (Sum of Normal Attack and Extra Attack Damage *0.6) / (Attack Interval)

Necrosis Burst is counted towards Logos' DPS, since it is a result of his attacks, so this provides a flat +800 DPS when it is active.

Ho'olheyak's S2 has a random chance to inflict Levitate on any given hit, and so its damage versus ground enemies is inherently random depending on when levitate triggers during the attack. This requires a fairly complex weighted average versus the probability any specific hit causes the Levitate status.

Animation jank is not counted towards any cycle times, I am not smart enough to know these things. If you do, wonderful let me know.
