PMD: Expanded Sky version 1.1.0 is now live!

(For context to those who haven't seen the original post, this is a PMD EoS romhack that adds all* starters from gens 5-9 into the game as heroes/partners)

Anyone who was sad that Sobble wasn't a starter in the original version of the hack, you're in luck! Sobble has been added as a partner in MIDNIGHT version, and a hero in both versions (replacing skitty - who you can still get by downloading version 1.0.0 specifically).

There's a few extra quality of life updates tossed in this version (such as being able to find the new pokemon in a dungeon to recruit) so be sure to check back in on the updated version of the original post, and share that one if you can! Don't want anyone thinking Sobble is still missing 8)

PMD Special Episode 0 Romhack: Secret Cutscene!

NOTE: This post will contain minor spoilers for the Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, Darkness, and Sky games as well as a romhack based off of it: Special Episode 0: In a Dark Past Well. This wasn't exactly what I expected for my first post, but I sure as hell ain't complaining! I'm making this post since I discovered something that I haven't seen posted anywhere, so I thought I might as well share it. Sorry if it's a little long! First off, a bit of context: Thanks to numerous fanart, I've begun playing a PMD romhack called Special Episode 0: In a Dark Past. It's a romhack of the Explorers of Time, Darkness, and Sky games specifically, delving deeper into the backstories of two of its characters: Grovyle and Dusknoir. As a massive PMD EoS fan, I've been enjoying it so far! Highly recommend it to anyone who's a fan of these games or characters and the writing is great! Before I picked up this hack, I'd already watched a short playthrough of it and knew that you were supposed to lose this fight to continue the story (Vespiquen is ridiculously strong and uses Silver Wind, which basically kills you from anywhere). But I wondered if it was possible to beat it. After all, I had a lot of stun seeds by this point, and Duskull knew both Disable and Hypnosis which could stall the Vespiquen.

So I did. Though I must first confess, I didn't do it 100% legitimately. I don't own a DS, so I play all my games using emulators, including both PMD EoS and this romhack. Thus, I was able to save right before the battle so I wouldn't have to reset and go through the entire dungeon every time I lost. So while I did manage to beat the Vespiquen fair and square from start to finish, I did do a couple resets to save time. But that's not what I made this post for. After beating the Vespiquen, I unlocked a secret cutscene! I haven't seen anyone share this before, so I thought I might as well put this out there for anyone who is curious. For anyone who's read this far, thank you so much, and here it is! (It's quite long at about 7 minutes, but it's totally worth the watch!)

Thanks for reading through this one hell of a first post! Like I said, I really love PMD and from the little I've experienced, this romhack is just as beautifully written. Highly recommend checking it out if you haven't! I wonder if I should start posting PMD fanart of my own...

Cut to Emmet, 2 weeks after Ingo has been missing, getting a notification from Chatter. He checks it and sees that its from Ingo, and gets worried abt someone hacking his account. He reads the post and is just like- Yeah thats def Ingo.

This is why Mojang is (even though it's still not perfect) a better company than Nintendo. (I can't bring myself to boycott nintendo because pokemon exists.)

Basically, Nintendo is about to copyright strike a bunch of youtubers for using rom hacks with mods such as randomizers and shit. That means MandJTV and other poketubers might be out of jobs. It's a fucked up situation. I don't know what to do about this. Nintendo (and gamefreak) makes all their money through merchandizing and can use the liberties to let things liek these slide, or make a free virtual console version of these games available on the switch with the randomizer mode as a built in setting (just making randomized pokemon be unrandomized when transferred to Pokemon home.) It would also save people from getting viruses on their computers tryna download this stuff. As for fanmade romhacks, nintendo and gamefreak should just adopt them and make them free. But no. They care more about their own products and the money they get.

I'm not saying mojang is perfect (cough mob vote cough). But they don't go to extreme lengths to take down modders. And a lot of modded content eventually makes it into the games. Back in the earlier days, they would even have the mod developers add the features into the game, such as horses and ender chests.

Hi, I'm coming here bc you've been talking to starry ^^' n theyve been chatting with me here and there abt it, and it made me think of some things i wanted to ask actually. Less ask more give you the option to talk about more: Please tell me more about monochrome blue to me he's a very interesting character, along with honestly a lot of the other characters that haunt the narrative of monochrome, id love to hear about them all (I'm mostly referring to blue, oak, the main two NPCS, but I would love to hear about red and leaf but i figure that can go into a spoilery territory) and your thoughts on them, or well, at least what you can give without spoilers.

OH BOY I WOULD LOVE TO RAMBLE ABOUT THIS. i hope you don't mind that my musings will be mostly meta bc i think i've talked a lot about blue as a character already but we'll see how carried away i get, haha!!

putting this under a cut because it might turn out pretty long........

FIRST of all i wanna expand upon what i said earlier about how monochrome!blue was meant for a "scrapped project." i was initially going to learn how to rom hack for the first time and make what was ESSENTIALLY pokemon monochrome as hacker cody had intended it (though without the gen 1-3 swapping because that's just Not Fucking Possible In Real Life.) i saw the idea in twitch plays pokemon's burning red playthrough but i don't think an actual downloadable rom exists out there so i couldn't build off of it if i wanted to. either way the project was way too ambitious for my smooth brain so i scrapped it. BUT there are a lot of leftovers from my time brainstorming for it that have all essentially become canon for monochrome!blue.

here's an old concept art from four years ago that focused on blue. the plot of the hack was always centered around blue and his grief over the fact that his best friend was Freaking Possessed and he wanted to save them from you.

in the rom hack, you would enter the name for the player, but blue would never refer to red/leaf by that name. he distinctly uses red/leaf's names for them, and the player's name for you. (other NPCs would avoid the use of you and red/leaf's names altogether, making it all the more potent when blue/oak use your/their names.) conversely, if you entered a name besides "BLUE" for him, other characters wouldn't acknowledge it. they'd still call him blue, the game's nametag would still call him blue when he spoke. BUT, when you battle him, it says "RIVAL [NAME]" like whatever you named him as. blue doesn't acknowledge it at first, but at some point in the late-game, he would call the player out for daring to think they have the right to name him, for daring to think they have the right to decide HIS identity.

at one point during my development of the hack, i brainstormed the idea that blue would eventually reject his OWN name, but i eventually scrapped this idea. instead, monochrome!blue starts off VERY confident of himself and his identity, only to come to the crushing realization that he never had any free will in his situation. the "best friend" he had been fighting so hard to save never even existed. red/leaf were the player all along, even during blue's "good" memories of them. and now that the player doesn't love the world of pokemon anymore, red/leaf don't love blue anymore either. all he is, and all he ever was, is an obstacle for the player to defeat. he never had any chance of winning because the game is centered around the player. his world is centered around the player. so he decided he didn't want to live in the player's world anymore.

anyways!!! i wanted to show off some scrapped dialogue bits from the hack, back when i was still working on it. these are dubiously canon to monochrome (meaning they're canon until i decide something contradicts it.) i'm gonna add some notes for context.

[PICKING A STARTER]

OAK: Here, [PLAYER]. There are three POKéMON here. Haha! The POKéMON are held inside these POKé BALLS. When I was young, I was a serious POKéMON TRAINER. But now, in my old age, I have only these three left. You can have one. Go on, choose!

BLUE: Hey! Gramps! Why not let me pick first, huh?

OAK: Be patient, Blue. You'll get your turn!

so for this bit it's a very subtle change but blue is kinda pressing oak to go off-script and let him pick the starter first this time. oak doesn't listen, trying to keep things on-script, not out of spite towards blue, but he's just trying to do his "job". oak thinks that his hands are tied when it comes to going against the player, that it's better to just give them what they want and hope they change.

[PRE-BATTLE BLUE DIALOGUE IN LAVENDER TOWN]

Oh! [...]You got here sooner than I thought you would. I came here to catch POKéMON, but honestly? I'm not in the mood anymore. What's the point trying to show off to you now? So, I'm just[...] taking a minute. What? No, I'm not here to grieve for a POKéMON. Nah. I'm grieving over someone else. Can you guess who it is?

this one was a subtle jab at the raticate theory. i wrote it specifically this way to confirm raticate theory wasn't a part of the hack's canon.

[DEFEAT DIALOGUE]

It's YOU, stupid!

[POST-BATTLE DIALOGUE]

What happened to you?! You used to put your heart into these battles! Now you're acting like it's just a chore for you! Does this mean anything to you? Tch[...] Whatever.

those are really the only two that i consider still part of monochrome canon - the rest of my notes are all outdated stuff from when i was still spitballing ideas for my old hack so it doesn't line up with the fleshed out ideas monochrome added to it.

now! time to talk about oak a little bit.

so oak's whole deal is that he knows something is wrong with the world now, but he's just choosing not to say much about it and just keep playing his intended role as best as he can. he's trying to maintain some semblance of normalcy, vainly hoping the player will find something to care about in the world of pokemon again.

he doesn't approve of the player's apathy, but he wants to give them the freedom to change on their own. he only finally speaks up once he realizes how badly the player's actions have hurt blue.

but unfortunately, oak's passive nature towards the player makes blue angry at him, and blue runs off, never to be seen again.

afterwards, oak actually was intended to appear in route 1, walking around near the tall grass looking for blue. if you were to talk to him, he would ask you if you would be willing to help oak bring blue back home. you can accept, and oak says he will be waiting for you, or you can refuse, and oak will be disappointed. either way, after the exchange, oak walks back to his lab. oak doesn't know exactly what happened to blue, but considering the boy released all his pokemon and ran off, it's easy to assume the worst. he is 99% certain blue isn't alive and wants the player to start a new game. (i never wrote the dialogue for this scene bc it's something monochrome's players will never get to see, but i want to note that oak's dialogue would have been written very carefully and vaguely. oak would never directly say the words "start a new game", simply stating that he will be there to help you bring blue back, should you choose to go back to the beginning.)

hacker cody skipped the oak dialogue, so oak is still waiting on route 1.

as for red and leaf. hmm. i don't know how much i can talk about those two... their presence within the story is very vague on purpose, and i feel like giving answers about their lore would ruin the mystery a bit.

i will say this though - i do think that they are equals. leaf isn't "more important" than red just because the glitch was caused by playing as her. it's not that leaf became sentient first and therefore red did as well. instead, i think they were just two hurting souls came together from two parallel timelines that hacker!cody had accidentally bled together. leaf and red made each other "whole". they each filled in gaps in the other's memories, giving them context that the other was lacking about all of the pain and hurt that cody put them both through. together, they are the amalgamation of all of cody's memories with the world of pokemon. hacker cody gave red/leaf sentience subconsciously, because despite characterizing red/leaf as empty vessels for the plot of their hack, their true feelings towards red/leaf were so strongly baked into the heart of cody's game that it couldn't be suppressed. cody wanted to kill red/leaf not because they "weren't real" to them anymore, but because they had become too real to them.

that's all i'll say on them though! i don't know how much of red/leaf we'll see get to in canon, because they are dead and meant to haunt the narrative, not be actual askable characters like cody/the three ghosts, but i'd love to explore those two in more depth in a noncanon setting in the distant future someday!

either way i think that's all the thoughts i have!! thank you for listening to me ramble <3

finally resubscribed to pokemon home subscription after having it a long time ago and then canceling it~~

I have half of the boxes full~~

mainly just a question aimed at myself but idk~~

thought about rifling through all of them to save the shinies and legendaries and getting rid of everything else to start over with scarlet and violet~~

(also wanted to restart violet to replay it again but almost the entirety of the pokedex is done :( screw the pokedex and start over cause I want to? or don't start over at all? I can probably do it all again~~ just save the shinies and what legendaries I have I guess~~)

boxes are mainly filled with random stuff, almost an entire box of shinies from my shiny hunting in sun, moon, ultra sun, ultra moon and pokemon x, and those hunts were a while ago.... no lets go ones I don't think. lots of oshawott and eevee so bet I can guess what younger me was hunting when I actually was shiny hunting.

Post that is not about the usual subject of this blog: If anyone here happens to be into Pokemon ROM hacks, I’ve just started Pokemon Unbound and it’s awesome. I guess I can’t really recommend something I’ve played for 15 minutes, but in 15 minutes I’ve been immediately struck by how good the graphics are, how smooth the gameplay is, how much attention to detail there is, how intricate a story they’re setting up right from the beginning, how the quality of life upgrades are immediately obvious. It’s like what I’d make if I could magically design my dream Pokemon game, and by “magically”, I mean if I had any of the very non-magic necessary skills, which I do not.

In Pokemon, ROM hacks mainly seem to be there to fix one thing: it’s technically a game for children, but enough fun to appeal to adults, so lots of adults play it, but it kind of sucks that they’re still playing something aimed at children. So a lot of the hacks fix things related to that, increasing the difficulty and aging up some of the characters and dialogue. And they’re non-commercial, so they get rid of all the annoying things that exist for commercialism reasons, like requiring you to trade with other games to get all the Pokemon.

This one does all that but also more than most other hacked games I’ve played, which is a few (Gaia, Blazed Glazed, and all the Drayano ones I think are the only ones I’ve played right through, plus dabbled in a bunch of others). It did way more than just fix the annoying parts of old games, seems to have gone above and beyond to make it more creative and interesting and clean up some rough edges. And does an excellent balance of managing all this while still making it feel like the old games, so you get the nostalgia and the fun of feeling like you’re in Pokemon, the way I find you sometimes don’t when playing versions that change things too much.

Like I said, this is based on the first 15 minutes. Maybe it crashes two cities in. But I downloaded it based off good reviews that suggest the quality keeps up. No one is reading my blog for recs about Pokemon hacks, but I just thought I’d put it out there in case. I think I'm going to try for a full Pokedex completing run on this one.

New documentation hub and landing page. It's included as a link to a Google Spreadsheet. While this is primarily the same as the contents of the text files, its easier on you for not having to juggle like ten tabs or whatever.

Mandatory Strength boulders have been pre-moved by default. Optional ones for items still require the HM, however.

Starters now evolve at level 30 instead of level 36. Learnset levels are adjusted for starter Chibi forms and evolved forms, including stone evolutions.

Red UFOs exchanges changed. They are now used for IV maxing NPCs near Mossdeep.

There are four NPCs with different IV spreads.

One is all 31. This is for most casual users in-game.

One is Attack 0, rest 31. This is to minimize self-damage from confusion on puppets that aren't using their Attack stat. Very min-maxy.

One is Speed 0, rest 31. This is even more niche and min-maxy than the last; the only use case for this is for purposefully slowing puppets down for Baton Pass. Gen 3 will sometimes use Baton Pass as a neutral turn switch, similar to U-Turn.

The last is Attack/Speed 0, rest 31. This is very niche and min-maxy. This is again for Baton Pass, but also minimizes confusion self-damage.

EV training NPCs in the Frontier changed. They now give 4 EVs in their listed stat per battle. This slows the process of EV training down but makes it way easier to make specialized EV spreads.

All TMs are now in Lilycove Mart, as well as the "rare" berries

Tori can now evolve into Chibi versions of the birds in the sprite

Yes, this does some absolutely ridiculous things to their movepools. blast burn mystia lets goooooooo

Tewi, Attack Tewi, and Defense Tewi can now all fully slide Attack and Defense could already slide, so this just makes it funnier. Use a Power Shard on Attack Tewi to turn her into normal Tewi, etc no advent though she can keep that movepool to herself

"Energy Ball" has, finally, been renamed to "Focus Blast"

Evolved Koishi now holds PP Up at 50% and PP Max at 5%

Reisen II buffs, finally -- Typing is now Heart/Fire -- Stats are now 65 HP, 60 ATK, 80 DEF, 130 S.ATK, 65 S.DEF, 85 Speed -- Her level-up movepool is unchanged, but she can learn a huge mess of special moves via TM now. This makes her usable if you want to, but you have to invest in her pretty heavily depending on what you may want to run -- Her primary ability is now Magnet Pull -- Gained Pickup as a secondary ability

Added another above-curve item, similar to Elder Pain and Psycho Wand -- It functions as a Quick Claw that always activates. Due to its relative ease of obtaining compared to the previous two items, there is only one way to obtain it unless playing the Sandbox version

This is actually the final update to this hack because I'm sick of binary hacking. It's tedious, slow, annoying, and things can just break. I'm tired of making multiple gigabytes of backups just because I want to change some images or text around.

This project is done! Complete, finished. There is nothing more that I can reasonably fit into this game anymore that I want to include.

I want to be done with this project.. so I am! Unless something is broken, I guess. If it literally does not function by my own fault, I'll fix it, but I'm not adding or changing anything else from this point on.

The shift to a Google Sheet is because we anticipate the current hosting, and by extension website, to go down permanently.

While backups are in place whenever a new hosting plan is picked out, this will continue to exist as a central information hub just so you don't have to thumb through multiple text files and wiki dive.

As of the time of posting this, the documentation is not 100% complete - I have yet to do level-up movesets and TM/HM compatibility, but I intend to work on that soon enough.

Pokemon Obscure V1.4 by Acegikmo Enterprises [C].gbc

That is the name of the Pokemon ROM hack I randomly started researching yesterday.  I remembered seeing a video of it as a kid and finding it funny before promptly going back to watching “vocaloid music”.

It took me a while to find the hack, and even longer once I found the actual name, since it was such an algorithm-unfriendly thing to search. “Obscure facts about [subject]” is a popular type of videos these days, after all.  Once I found the exact file name I found that it was repeated in a ton of ROM lists.

It’s a ROM hack of Pokemon Gold where you play as someone that was turned into a giant nose (with feet coming out of the nostrils), trying to become human again.  Or at least that’s the story according to a review on vizzed.com.

There’s a ton of wacky sprite and text edits.  It kind of reminds me of Pokemon Quartz, honestly.  Seeing the way that reviewer reacted to this hack having “custom Pokemon” (not fakemon) made me realize just how old this hack must be.

Sadly Nintendo already got to vizzed to have it taken down and I could only a download for the game by going to a different “shady” online emulation site.  Well, I did find two gameboy compilation downloads, but I wasn’t sure if my computer could handle downloading a ton of gameboy ROMs just so I could sift for one specific ROM, so I just downloaded from the first site.

I tried looking up this ‘acegikmo enterprises’ before I transferred the game to my computer that had an emulator, and only came up with a youtuber that did some weird math things that are WAY over my head. She pointed me to @acegiak​, who apparently also used to go by acegikmo, but while she did make an original gameboy game, I dont think she made a Pokemon ROM hack.

Later, when I finally managed to open the ROM hack on VBA I was met with a surprise...

Who’s this HFD?  And what’s Meowth hacks?

That's especially weird because this French playthrough by MeetTheReaperXV, shows that the title screen didn’t originally show that:

I tried looking up Meowth Hacks in the early 2010-2012 range, but haven’t come up with anything.  Was it a rom-hacking forum? Or a rom-hacking group?  No clue.  My search for context stops here, I suppose.

the best, most top tier, most BRILLIANT fangame of all time is a game by ekat n michael called pokemon ashen frost. bestie @frostbite-yinny can vouch for how amazing this game is. basically its a crime noir pokemon game that takes place in one huge ass city. you play as a detective with a swinub as a partner n the game is split into cases rather than gyms. my words arent enough to describe how high quality and genuis this game is. the story is deep n intricate n so beautifully told. n ohmygosh the SETTING. the city of riverview feels so,,, real. like i literally miss being there. the MUSIC too!!! its so jazzy n compliments the setting n story so well. n dont even get me STARTED on those CHARACTERS,,, you will get ATTATCHED. n i mean it. the end a the latest demo literally had me WEEPING. it features a talking protagonist which rlly helps you bond w the other characters. basically, ashen frost is a story abt people that takes place in the pokemon world, n thats what i adore abt it. i IMPLORE anyone who likes pokemon to play this game. im not saying that cause its my favorite, but bc to not play this game is literally a disservice to yourself. in fact i'll even give you a download link,,, here ya go

ahem. anywho. as for actual rom hacks, my favorite is easily pokemon fire red rocket edition. pokemon but you play as a member a team rocket!!! its such a breath a fresh air. a fun way to play through kanto, which is definitely needed seeing as most ppl have played through kanto 53629523 times. n the STORY??? goes HARD. theres a twist at the end that changes the way you see the story of red n blue. it takes the game from really great to fuckin BRILLIANT.

special shoutout to my first rom hack n the one that got me into all this,,, its a fire red hack by @shima-draws n its basically the story of fire red but your rival has a crush on you n flirts w you throughout the course a the game. my gateway drug n the reason i was able to play through kanto <3 her post abt it is here

another special special game is pokemon legends of the arena. another BRILLIANT n unique fangame that has you travelling the region while participating in a tournament rather than a gym challenge. amazing characters, a talking protagonist which is AWESOME, n an amazing soundtrack!!! the story is absolutely FANTASTIC too. n theres a breathtaking sidequest too. n theres like three different endings!!! which i love!! i got the true ending on the first try hehe ;))

i also cant help but love pokemon insurgence. as my first fangame i have a lotta nostalgia for it. look man, this ones FUN. its got super cool delta pokemon which are essentially regional forms before regional forms were regional forms. the story is a fun level of over the top n i love the inclusion of some a my favorite canon pokemon characters. also, this game made me cry. not bc a the story, but bc its fuckin HARD. n my ass was playing on NORMAL difficulty.

Latest Japanese NSO commercial removed the disclaimer saying that Pokemon can't be transferred into NSO Pokemon Stadium, which, if real, could mean:

The Gen 1-3 games are possibly getting ready to be ported into the NSO Game Boy and Game Boy Advance. The 3DS shop is closing at the end of next month, meaning the Gen 1-2 games can't be downloaded from there anymore. Meanwhile, someone hacked their Switch to run FireRed on the Advance app, and not only does it run flawlessly, so do the online features for trading. AAAAH

it is so concerning that the only way to transfer pokemon from the ds/3ds games to the switch games is via an online service. it's not likely to be going down anytime soon- it survived the eshop closure, after all (as long as you have it downloaded- your reminder now to make sure you have pokebank on your 3ds before march) but it won't be around forever. at some point that functionality will be gone. hopefully by then nintendo will have moved onto their next console and switch hacking becomes more accessible so folks can make PKSM-like software to serve in pokebank's place

You mentioned making proper genned event pokemon, but what does that entail?

depends on the event in question!

back in the day during gens 3 and 4, IRL event distributions were often handled by running a custom GBA cart with the event distribution software and hooking up to other GBAs via link cable or with the wireless adapter, or a custom DS cart that took advantage of the DS' innate wireless compatibilities. obviously all of these carts were meant to be sent back to nintendo or get destroyed, but that... just did not happen to all of them lol. (there are also a few local distribution softwares for 3DS and stuff but wayyy less common)

you can actually buy gen 4 distribution carts for an excessive amount of money, though i can't in good conscience recommend looking for gen 3 distribution carts, they're INCREDIBLY rare and most of the listings you'll find for them on ebay are 100% fake and are scamming you out of hundreds of dollars, and most people don't know how to tell the difference unfortunately.

that being said, i'm not recommending you buy these at all actually, because most of the ones in physical circulation have been dumped online and can be downloaded. the digiex forums contains them, and you can download these and run them on actual hardware and roleplay being the toys r us/gamestop/etc employee and distribute to themself just like how it would have happened back at the time of the event lmao. for the DS ones it's easy with a hacked 3DS and twilight menu, but for GBA you'd need a GBA flashcart and the associated link cable/wireless adapters + two GBAs. this can also be done on emulators with support for local connection between two windows and has the same exact effect as doing it with real hardware, it just feels cool to do it with real hardware (pictured below is an ancient video i took of me distributing 2005 Aura Mew to myself with the actual software made by nintendo, running off a flashcart. i took this years ago and the quality is ass and my positioning is awkward sorry lol. my room doesn't even look the same...)

as for events without distribution software, old gen ones have the DNS exploit, which you can find simple instructions for here. this is much easier with gen 5 than gen 4 - you can find gen 4 help i wrote here. these restore all online functionality in the old games, including mystery gift - trying to grab a mystery gift from the internet will allow you to download pretty much any event in the game (though the one it gives you is random and you'd have to try over and over to get the ones you want). the data of these events is 100% identical to how the events actually were at the time of distribution, like completely indistinguishable, so it's a safe way to get those mons to bank and home, though you may want to change your DS date to the same date as the event in question so it doesn't look weird.

as for 3DS there is no fancy stuff like the above, you'll just want to go to project pokemon's public event gallery and browse for what you're looking for, which also provides a link to instructions for injecting these in your games. it's worth noting you can also inject all the gen 3-5 events that have been documented/archived this way, it's just less interesting than the above methods imo. this is probably the least legitimate feeling option but the data is still identical and well. other than elaborate glitches or something that's the best its gonna get. it's likely once 3DS servers shut down next year that eventually a DNS exploit-adjacent service will pop up for gen 6 and 7...

btw worth noting that gen 4 is the only gen where the name rater literally only checks for TID and doesn't even consider the "fateful encounter" flag that event pokemon are usually given, so you can RNG manip a matching trainer ID and then nickname event mons you aren't supposed to be able to nickname fully within the limits of the original game and hardware LOL. that isn't related to your question i just think it's funny that you can do that and it's technically completely legit

anyway sorry for the long ass answer i just find mystery gifts fascinating and it deserved me being a little more comprehensive

edit: oh yes and there's certain event mons that are still able to be obtained without all this wacky stuff, ie the pokemon colosseum bonus disc gives out infinite jirachis and they just released that as a preorder bonus back then. so worth looking at options for distributions like that too if you need a species of mythical or whatever!
