writeblr intro
kia ora, call me wren or moonjelly (they/them).
i'm a writer from aotearoa new zealand (pākehā), in my late 20s, with a BA and masters of creative writing, currently doing postgrad cultural studies. i have too many ongoing works and ideas, so thought this might be a good way to find a community and motivation.
THIS BLOG WILL CONTAIN OCCASIONAL NSFW CONTENT!
my writing generally can be characterised as:
long-form prose (with occasional shorter works)
full of queer and trans/nb characters
some form of scifi, fantasy, or otherwise speculative fiction
fairly descriptive with attempts to be funny (inspired by derek landy, terry pratchett, and douglas adams)
chronically in a state of wip
filled with too many metaphors and similes that i attempt to cut back on but i just [shakes fist] love them so much
i'm mostly on here for community, brainstorming, and motivation. i'm happy to participate in tag games, even if we don't know each other! i'll also be asking a lot of questions, probably localisation or hyperspecific to certain industries/specialisations when i go down research rabbitholes.
current wips
(novel) perfect weapon
currently my only completed first draft
speculative fiction set broadly in our current day with slightly more advanced technology, following the protagonist angeline/aella (irish-latina, USamerican, bi + asexual, she/her) as she is dragged into an organisation working for the new world order and forced to be an assassin due to her genetic predisposition to experimental superhuman abilities
uses the tag #perfect weapon
(novel) polaris
i have a whole obsidian wiki for the worldbuilding
poly wlw harem fiction
set in another world in the country of deukai, the recently-crowed empress han has been deposed in a coup by her royal council who believe her too soft and pacifist for the position. narrowly escaping her death, she goes on the run with her closest friend jiyu (the palace administrator) and yubin (her life-sworn knight-protector). along the way she maybe starts a rebellion/revolution and gets a harem.
currently using the members of k-pop girl group dreamcatcher as the seven main characters as i'm too lazy to come up with original characters at this point
also an entire pinterest board for this one
uses the tag #polaris
(novel) the lucky ones
a YA coming-of-age set in auckland, new zealand
alternates chapters between the five main characters, oz, north, luna, theo, and jaz
the LGBT boys caring about boys rich kid dark academia novel of my dreams
my concept for this is "wattpad original fiction but good"
uses the tag #the lucky ones
(novella) unearthly burdens
this is straight up idfic monsterfucking erotica ngl
cryptidhunter quin (he/him, trans guy) unwisely delves into the forest in an area that's had multiple mysterious disappearances to prove that they can be attributed to a cryptid, not a serial killer. jokes on him, because it's a predatorial alien that decides he's its mate :) :) :)
he gets forcibly impregnated and develops stockholm syndrome for this terrifying alien creachur and they live happily ever after
uses the tag #unearthly burdens
i follow from my main @sandumilfshou, but you can also find my postgrad alt @dannyfandomphd. i'm also tricksterity on ao3.

Some notes: Noirvember, and as usual I never go full Noir but I did watch mostly Noirs. Some good Noirs, some not so good Noirs, and a few “hmmm, I’m not really convinced these are Noirs” too. I mostly worked my way through the films I hadn’t watched from Indicator’s Noir box sets - with a couple of detours. Being very taken with Märta Torén in Sirocco led me to The Man Who Watched Trains Go By which I really enjoyed, and a Losey fest almost started but I got sidetracked...

"Youths Captured After Exciting Motor Car Chase," Ottawa Journal. October 3, 1932. Page 15.
---
Police "Prowler" Car and Pursued Machine Make Some Thrilling Turns on Lindenlea Streets.
---
Chased through the winding streets of Lindenlea and New Edinburgh by a police prowler car, four youths accused of stealing the automobile in which they tried to elude their pursuers were captured at 2.30 o'clock. Sunday morning and arrested on a charge of theft.
The prisoners were: Arthur Seguin, 17, of 45 Springfield road; Fernand Villeneuve, 17, of 90 Catherine street, Eastview: Gerard Cardinal, 16, of 30 Douglas avenue, and Royal Legault, 17, of 25 Durocher street.
Arraigned in Police Court this morning the quartet was remanded until tomorrow without pleading.
While patrolling the eastern sector of the city and rambling around New Edinburgh, Constables Leopold Goyette and John Cavan noticed an automobile cross Beechwood avenue. the boundary between Ottawa and Eastview, at Putman avenue, at high speed.
Put On Speed.
Deciding to get close enough to take the license number, the police headed their car towards the direction the others had taken and turned into Putman avenue in pursuit. When they realized they were being followed and overtaken, the occupants of the car ahead increased the speed and darted into the labyrinth of streets in Lindenlea.
Hot in pursuit, the police saw the lights of their quarry's machine go out and realized they could not slacken their pace an instant if they were to catch up.
Around sharp bends, hair-pin twists and right angle corners, the two automobiles roared. the police car steadily gaining. After 10 minutes of dodging, swerving and mad racing. Constable Goyette guided the prowler car past and ahead of the other automobile and forced its passengers to stop at Rideau Terrace and Noel street.
Inspector of Detectives Mortimer Culver said the four boys had a number of articles in the car which they will be asked to explain. They include a loaded black-jack, nine flashlights, a wrench, two pairs of pliers. a tennis racket, a gallon jar and a length of rubber tubing smelling strongly of gasoline, and several bottles of soft drink.
Car Was Stolen.
The automobile they were driving, the police said, belonged to Peter Bance, 37 Daly avenue, and was stolen from Nelson street between 9 and 10 p.m., Saturday. It was not damaged in the chase and subsequent capture.
Both Inspector Culver and Chief Inspector George McLeod were warm in their praise of the work which resulted in the arrest of the quin- tet and the recovery of the stolen car. They reiterated their belief that the prowler car system put into operation in recent months had more than justified its existence and was one of the best and most efficient means of crime prevention and detection in use. Lucien Barnabe, 642 St. Patrick street, was among the youths held last night but he was not charged, as he entered the car after it had been stolen.

What Do I Value in a Film Festival?
FAKE NEWS: THE BRITISH CINEMA PAPERS (2017)
The Hitchcock Papers: Re-created the front page from Young and Innocent (1937) and exhibited it at the University of Brighton Gallery. Cinecity also created an exhibition for Brighton Rock (1947) directed by John Boulting
HANGOVER SQUARE (2012)
In the University of Brighton Gallery (CCA) an installation to mark to 50th anniversary of the death of Patrick Hamilton was created. Here, Anna Deamer and the Cinecity team brought Hamilton's most famous work 'Hangover Square' to life., akin to that of a film set. The piece consisted of two interiors,. One was a Hotel room in Brighton located in the South Gallery. Whereas the Northern Gallery had a fictional crime scene based in a London flat.
In the same location two years later, a similar piece entitled BERG was also created by Anna Deamer and Cinecity for Ann Quin's debut novel which was published in 1964. Here they also had musician and composer Barry Adamson create an immersive soundtrack to play throughout its exhibition.
LUANDA-KINSHASA – STAN DOUGLAS (2017)
This project was a 365-minute film presented by CINECITY as a cinema installation for the first time in the UK where audience members could stay to watch the piece for as long as they wished.
What Have I Discovered?
Coming from a fine art background, that focuses on installation and art video, I find myself drawn to how the audience interacts with the fine art aspects of a film.
A film's ability to be immersive is something I, and many others, highly value. However, aspects such as props and film sets are often overlooked despite how important they are to making a film immersive. Not only does allowing audiences to interact with these art pieces in person help to highlight and display their importance; but it also to feel more connected with the media the set/props are from.
Video art is a notoriously missed film and fine art form. With how they are displayed in exhibitions, it is immensely rare that a viewer stays for the duration of a piece. Ergo, video art is often only watched in its entirety by those who go out of their way to look up, access and watch the piece in their free time. Therefore, having a traditional film festival highlight a display of art film is immensely important to video artists.
