This black doublet with beautiful silver embroidery was first spotted being worn by Patrick Stewart in a 2005 episode of π¬πππππ. Β As π¬πππππ has a history of costume reuse, this piece likely originated with an earlier production, though where that might be has yet to be uncovered. Β The costume was seen again on Sope Dirisu as Mr. Malcolm in the 2022 motion picture π΄π. π΄ππππππβπ π³πππ. Β Do you know where this piece may have originated? Doublet & Breeches
c.1625-1635
England
This ensemble of plain wool serge, probably once black, now faded to brown, is a rare example of everyday menβs dress of the early 17th century. It is lined for warmth with a linen pile fabric, similar to modern towelling. The doublet openings are faced with shot silk, perhaps to deceive a casual observer that the whole garment was lined with a more luxurious fabric. The cut of the ensemble may represent the rather old-fashioned tastes of someone from a rural area or an older man. By 1625 slashed or paned sleeves were coming into fashion and a longer, slimmer cut of breeches replacing the full style seen here.

I was looking for something else, but I ended up downloading this Spanish tailoring book from the Biblioteca Digital HispΓ‘nica from 1618 (!!!!!), and after a song and some licences from the King and thank yous to Don AndrΓ©s Roig, and the note that the book does not contain anything against the Catholic faith, the book starts with the description of measurements for fabrics: la bara de medir.
Of course it has PAGES of the ways a bara can be divided, notes for how many fingers are half a palm (6 fingers), and other divisions and measurement. If you know Spanish, you can read the first page up here and the way it is signaled later in the book for the patterns like this one of a doublet:
I love the way it is explained that you can cut a garment in different ways for different widths of fabric, in this case the first option of for a fabric of one bara and 6 fingers (these appear in the first page up here), the second 1 bara and a forth, and the third is 1 bara, a forth, an ochavo (6 fingers) and 1 finger:
Weird way to measure, but sure, we all can move our patterns with this nice guide.
All images from the book "GeometrΓa y TraΓ§a Perteneciente al Oficio de Sastres", (1618), Rocha Burgen, Francisco, Biblioteca Nacional de EspaΓ±a.

Doublet and trunk hose from the National Museums Scotland Collection, English, c.1665.
This ensemble of silk and silver tissue, worn by the 6th Duke of Lennox, would have been considered the height of fashion at the time.
