Another drama that starts off nicely and goes downhill midway and never recovers. It’s your basic predictable romcom with the added on cheesy cliches. It actually works pretty well in the first half, the acting is good and main leads have excellent chemistry together. The drama suffers from choppy editing and terrible writing in the later half. It seemed like sometimes the writers wanted to drag on scenarios over and over again or then completely left out storylines they were building up since the beginning (*cough* the whole brother situation) Nonetheless it’s still a watchable drama. I will add in the characters played by Zhang Xue Ying and Dylan Kuo are one of my favorite brother and sisterly duo performances.

Favorite Visual Storytelling of 2024: Cdrama Edition

Although I spent the better part of 2024 complaining about the state of Chinese dramas, one thing I did appreciate seeing in this year's lineup was all the lovely cinematography and production design on display. Not only did these visuals look great, but they were meaningful to the story.

In no particular order, here are my top picks of the year...

Favorite Use of Color: The Double

Evocative and theatrical, The Double's cinematography definitely caught people's attention, splitting viewers into those who liked it and those who thought it was too much.

But what always struck me as refreshingly unique about the drama was its careful use of color . Check out how the following scenes have a completely different feeling because of their color palettes:

Whether it's the fairytale romanticism of a white blossom forest or the queasy yellow and pink of a brothel, the show's colors always give us a sense of mood (and character) without needing much exposition. Really efficient storytelling!

Favorite Production Design #1: Fangs of Fortune

If I included screenshots of all my favorite sets and costumes from my next pick, we'd be here all day.

I've always loved the energy and symbolism of Director Guo Jingming's visual storytelling, but his production design team in Fangs of Fortune really outdid themselves. The scale, shapes, and most importantly texture of each set gives the show a sweepingly escapist quality that we rarely seen in Cdramas. It is true high fantasy come to life, asking us to reflect on what it means to be human through the eyes of those who are otherworldly.

Favorite Use of Production Design #2: To the Wonder

I was uncomfortable with the tacit political messaging of To the Wonder but the amount of care and detail that went into its production design is undeniable. People seem to mostly praise the drama for its idyllic on-location shots but I think it's the prop design and interiors that really sing because they provide insight into lives we rarely see represented on screen.

Favorite Use of Light: Love in a Dream

When I see dramas like Love in a Dream, it makes me wish the industry would just throw money at all the talented and creative visual directors in the short drama circuit. A masterclass in contrast, this drama is absolutely gorgeous, and its dramatic use of chiaroscuro lighting makes it look like a cross between a Renaissance painting and shadow puppet show.

Was I always able to follow the plot? No, but who cares when every other scene looks like art.

Favorite Use of Camera Language #1: Tender Light

Tender Light is a great example of using cinematography to establish the right tone for a story.

The story follows a woman being accused of murdering her abusive husband and the camera language actually mimics the social fallout of his death. Look at how it uses dirty framing, overhead shots, tracking, etc. to give the story a voyeuristic and surveillant feeling. It's like we (the audience) are being forced to invade the privacy of these characters, and in doing so, the show implicates us in the nasty gossip that surrounds our FL as much as the local townspeople spreading it.

Favorite Use of Camera Language #2: Regeneration

From the opening shot of Regeneration , we learn that this is a world where it's difficult to distinguish reality from its equally compelling reflection. The drama is all about the stories people weave and the show plays with subjective cinematography to make us question what we perceive as the truth.

Runners-Up

I dropped Blossom before I could get a sense of its visual storytelling, but the drama has Director Zeng Qingjie's signature dreamy, romantic visuals . Bonus: Li Yunrui looking hot in his gray wig.

Riverside Code at Qingming Festival didn't quite work for me as a case-breaking story but the amount of research they put in the costuming and prop design is incredible. I hope Director Yang Fan gets more opportunities to direct big budget period dramas because his attention to detail is immaculate .

嫡嫁千金 / 墨雨云间 The Double - Confession scene

Ah, okay, I can finally see where the drama!Duke came from. It is in the CONFESSION scene between these two in the book; and I have to share it with someone!

So basically the Big Bad (殷湛 Yin Zhan) in the book, wants to marry his son to Jiang Li. He's planning to do it forcefully, by making the Emperor grant the marriage, leaving her with no choice but to flee Yanjing. That night she decided to bid her farewells to the duke because you know why... She says it's out of gratitude, but at the same time, well... 👀Anyway, here is the scene: 😍😍(It's a secret night visit, which happens quite frequently between them, to discuss how to carry out her revenge plan)

姬蘅忍不住又往前凑近了一点，他偏着头，仔仔细细的打量她，他的目光锐利而温柔，教清醒的人也会沉沦，他说：“你说谎。”

姜梨抬头看他：“怎么会？”

“你不愿意嫁给殷之黎的原因，我知道。”他的嗓音低醇，爬过人的心上，酥酥麻麻，像是被点了穴道，动弹不得，只得看着他笑的勾人，越发逼近，他说：“你喜欢我这件事，我早就知道了。”

Ji Heng couldn't resist leaning in closer again. He cocked his head, studying her intently with eyes sharp yet tender enough to ensnare even the one with the clearest mind. "You're lying," he declared.

Jiang Li lifted her gaze to meet his. "How could you say that?"

"The real reason you won't marry Yin Zhili—I know it," he murmured in a deep, velvety voice that seemed to ripple through her heart, leaving her utterly captivated. She couldn't move, caught in the spell of his enticing smile as he drew nearer. "I've known for a while that you like me."

after that... when she finally managed to break away --

“生气了？”他道：“都对我直呼其名。” 姬蘅笑了笑，哑着嗓子再次凑近，他低头看着姜梨，目光宠溺又柔和，他说：“你喜欢我这件事，我知道，那我喜欢你这件事，你知不知道？”

"Are you angry?" he asked. "You've already called me by my name." Ji Heng smiled softly, his voice husky as he leaned in again. He looked down at Jiang Li, his gaze affectionate and gentle. "I know you like me. But do you know that I like you too?"

“我本来不想这么快把你牵扯进来，小姑娘，” 他摸了摸姜梨的头发，替姜梨把垂下来的头发别到而后，“但是你好像有些心急，我可不能让你跑了。”

✩ The Double ─ Episode 35 (墨雨云间)

Now, we all love noble and heroic good guys. But sometimes, in the safe confines of fiction, nothing is as fun as a really trash man. Here is a description of our trash contestants:

Shen Yurong, The Double

Pros: really good at exams, flute playing and being a murderous sub.

Cons: terrible at wife murder (tho perhaps that's a plus?), moral backbone of a sponge, sis and mom would make bad in laws.

Murong Xuanlie, Kill Me Love Me

Pros: looks really good with hair loose, big on women having careers outside the home, devoted to one woman only, great kisser.

Cons: murdered 100K+ people, wants to be a fratricide, gaslight girlboss gatekeep is his motto.

Second Prince, Joy of Life 2

Pros: swing in the middle of his house, likes chess and fruit, funny.

Cons: can't decide if he wants to fuck or fuck over Fan Xian; indecisiveness is not sexy in a man.

Di Lin, Eternal Brotherhood

Pros: loving husband, great friend, victorious general, makes toys for his unborn kids.

Cons: royal executioner who puts cities and armies and families to the sword, the soap and water bills for all that blood will be huge.

Hei Long, Burning Flames

Pros: a definite style trend setter, walks barefoot everywhere thus saving money on footwear, devoted to his lover.

Cons: like the way eviler version of Zeus; only hobby appears to be enslaving humans which can get boring after a while.

Wei Zhao, Love of Nirvana

Pros: Hot, sword dance skills, you will have no in-laws.

Cons: love language appears to be choking, poisoning and stabbing.

Ruo Wen, Love in the Desert

Pros: a really good time, very few shirts, knows what to do in bed, has his own banging theme song.

Cons: murdering bandit with limited notions of consent; plus his gf will prolly stab you.

Yang Kang, The Legend of Heroes

Pros: really sexy about his daddy and mommy issues, that hair!

Cons: his murder happy identity crisis requires serious therapy he can't afford

Lu Jiaxue, The Rise of Ning

Pros: he's already got your wedding chamber, jewelry, dolls and accessories ready - perfect for a lady who doesn't like housework

Cons: chokes women like he's in a mini.

Cang Xuan, Lost You Forever 2

Pros: smart, devoted, royal, breaks down beautifully

Cons: many other wives, can feed your hands to maggots or kill your boyfriend, serious cousin kink, character massacred by the writer.

Wang Jia Luo, Heroes (2024)

Pros: can recite reams of poetry, will protect you to the utmost if you are damsel

Cons: if you are not a damsel will murder you and not blink; in fact will murder you for jaywalking as Qing reincarnation of Javert.

Please be aware I excluded MLs from minis because otherwise I could never fit anyone into one poll.

The Double 墨雨云间 (2024) Dir. Bai Yun Mo, Lu Hao Ji Ji, Ma Shi Ge – Ep. 9

I'm OBSESSED with the terrifying Princess Wanning and want ALL the backstory about her time as a hostage and everything she did to survive (and possibly even thrive?) in such a situation. Please, drama, give it to me! (Do I feel fic urges coming on?)

She's over-the-top and openly, gleefully cruel and sadistic in a way that female villains don't often get to be, but the actress makes her chillingly believable. The actress Li Meng oscillates so naturally between all the minute shades of her many malevolent moods and is clearly having a ball playing her. Li Meng was great in The Bad Kids and now I know I will definitely be seeking out more of her work. Suggesting two men murder each other in front of her as a job interview is exactly the kind of unhinged psychotic creativity that I appreciate about Wanning.
