I Do Love an Evening Cape: 1905 The Columbia Book of the Use of Yarns

I love a cape for evening for the same reason I think they are silly for day wear: that they are a bit impractical. The long ones usually must be clutched to be kept shut which means they are no good for day wear when you need to full use of your hands to open a door or carry a laptop. But in the evening, when you are relaxing, you can be a bit impractical and enjoy it.

In the evening, you can also indulge in the frivolous if you are in the mood. This opera cap from 1905 falls into that category. The whole thing is crocheted, first in a yarn they call Floss, in order to create the body of the cape. Then, to create the ruffles, you go back over the body in order to add 8 rows of ruffles, also in Floss and then add to the edges of those rows, picot trimming in Shetland Wool. a I inch ribbon is drawn through the upper edge to keep its shape. Then, a 3 inch wide ribbon, not a rarity back then when large ribbons were used on large hats, is added to create a tie to keep the cape around your neck.

The whole thing looks like a forthy confection and seems worth the effort. I can imagine it as particularly effective in pastels which always look like they floaty. They wore it with the long gowns of the day, with puffy bodices, tiny waists, and long trumpet-flared skirts, but I don’t see why we couldn’t throw it over a modern look to soften it and draw attention to the face. Of course, one would have to work out a modern gauge and size, but doing the math would not be very hard.

1st real post

Watched vid on some "politinformation" on factory in USSR in 1977. Some commenters were quick to  assert even at this time nearly no-one believed in communism in USSR. But this begs the question what exactly people had in their heads as a goal, and what was actually possible, considering there was more than mere USSR at economical exchange?

I like to rebase "class conscious" as "Understanding-based hypersystem of humans, but with strong consideration for non-humans/"Nature". Not just sende/vibe of being exploited, cheated or wronged. Not consumer-istish model of "we work, someone somehow magically provides stuff for us". Everything complex  humans get they must do with their own hands, machines, brainz .. without ruining themselves and their surroundings. 

I think that may be some visible milestone like say 4 workday week and Universal Basic Services should be possible even  earlier than today? But probably not by 1980 in USSR specifically?  So bad Marx apparently VERY SERIOUSLY underestimated effort (in time, education, coordination, materials, energy, complex machines and networks) required for creating, maintaining, expanding (within limits! it become obvious in Limits To Growth nearly 100 years after Marx!) this technosphere of industrial civilization... coupled with humans growing unhappy if someone somewhere get supposedly better shiny toys! Exploiters always can create more in factory (all other factors being equal) because they exactly exploit everything to the max, beyond  recuperation point. So bad we never internalized that! :(

I do not knowhow it should work, considering we already in overshot and our technosphere runs on non-renewably sources with no fast/cheap/easy solution in sight. May be we really should go down to wood-based, medium manual labor lifestyle? At least as s ok me homes/cities will old into "need replacement anyway" age? With some collectivist thoughts like central energy,/heating system (with spares). A bit like spaceship lite, where heating/energy/comms and water and at least partially food considering Life Support System, i.e. not something optional? So you at least try to set low limit trying to avoid "we started good but landed in ruins 50 years later" downslide?

Where ppl still understand that say doctors do not come out of nothing so they have plan about maintaining  needed specialists over  time. But doctors often can do very little without all those hitech gizmos, so maintaining  some technology of medicine, as well as recordkeeping/study sounds like good idea .. likewise for engineers who do stuff like pipes, engines, filters ... It will probably look very different from shiny hitech solarpank or citifutur aesthetics but most important question -  will it work, as in providing humans with enviro where they genuine interested in both maintaining/improving a bit their support and expand it even to non-humans? Instead of traditional way of slaughtering and enslaving them due to lack of any alternative ...

But it requires solid  mass understanding/accepting that "one hitech device per few families but with robust sharing/giving away culture" is much preferable to "everyone forced to buy shortlived junk AND work their whole life for it"

"Robots will do work" is not even on table simply due to sheer catastrophic ecological impact  even current consumerism have on planet, and you can't physically move/reshape material objects with smaller and smaller amounts of energy/materials. We pretty close to hard physical limits here, and Tomas Murphy (dothemath blog) even calculated growing economy does not fit any physically possible source of energy, and truely renewable energy generation will left humans with much less energy than we used to abuse in last 50 years. Overhead of non-fossil-fuel based technology is so much higher, even before we run into recycling ... so, radical reconfiguration how we live seems to be only livable alternative. Alternative to neoslavery in globally crashed society .... Communal, slow(ish) living look promising (sorry do not want to crashland into *Russia*s 1850x era! It was probably sustainable in terms of food produced but sucked to death in nearly any other aspect). Eric Hunter on Medium put some thoughts into that too.  How to get there from here considering violent capitalist resistance is probably updated revolutionary Question for our era. 

It doesn't look we have luxuary of centuries ahead to figure this out. On the other hoof rushing things basically sure way to break them.

The Mystery of the Infant Golfer: Infant’s Golf Cape from 1905

The Columbia Book of the Use of Yarns was created, like many early pattern collections, to sell yarns, in this case Columbia Yarns. It opens with instructions on how to knit and crochet, some stitch patterns, and then offers over a hundred patterns from afghans to sweaters and everything in between. But this one stumped me.

Infants do not usually play golf. So either, this was not for an infant but for a small child which does not make a lot of sense to me. Or, it was for an infant of sporting parents who played golf and hope the tiny tot would play too some day. And in the meantime, they wanted their child to look sporty.

Golf was one of the first sports open to women, along with cycling, and the book offers several sweaters meant for sports. In short, sports was a fashionable activity at a time when people touted its health advantages. And sportswear became fashionable too. Sweaters were generally considered to be informal clothing, and sports were informal wear that also had to be practical.

For this cape, and the sweaters, you will have to work out the size and the gauge, some doing of simple math. You can find them and over one hundred other patterns as a pdf.
