The day is cool, breeze crisp. The sun’s out, warming my face. I open the door to Dot’s Sandwich Shop, and the little bell above the door jingles. A few crisp leaves blow into the door with me.

Marcus stands at the counter, ordering a soup. I eye him while he orders. He looks so good standing there in his flannel, hair messy from the wind.

When it’s my turn, I walk up to you and say “one grilled peanut butter sandwich on cinnamon swirl bread, please,” and you smile because objectively that’s a great fucking sandwich.

Marcus turns to me and smiles,

“I didn’t even know they had that.”

“They don’t,” I say. “Dot makes it special.”

He grins. “Maybe you’ll have to let me try some,”

I shrug my shoulders nonchalantly and smirk, but I know I’d let him do anything he asked.

I've been on Tumblr for a bit over 3 months and I somehow have (as of writing) 204 followers. I don't know if that's a lot or a little considering how long I've been on here but that's a lot more than I expected to have in a year.

I remember being happy to have 30 followers. Now there's over 200. It's surreal to think that there's that many people who are at least a little interested to see what i'm pondering.

It's also weird when I make a post that does really well and thousands of people see it.

What is Tumblr

A tumbler is literally a straight glass, with flat bottom and no stem or handle. It is most often seen at a bar in the form of a short glass for scotch or other mixed drinks. The drink can be anything and tumblers often contain other types of drinks besides scotch. The drink mixer is often also called a tumbler and a beer glass can also meet that definition. However, there is a dual significance to the word tumbler when talking about gatherings at a bar. Most people will seldom get tipsy off of 1 beer glass or 1 shot of whiskey. In that sense, the word tumbler completes its definition in a drink that may cause you to stumble or slur your words a bit but not make you trip over yourself and land flat on your face as you're trying to mix at a bar.

In that sense, a tumbler describes a feeling of relaxation, confidence, good self esteem and a feeling of comfort in your surroundings. It has a vibe of walking into a bar and being asked if you want your favorite drink e.g. can I get you a scotch and replying sure, can I get it in a tumbler. Another example would be walking into a bar your not familiar with and asking for a favorite drink and being asked, did you want it in a glass but then replying, naw can I get it in a tumbler?

Tumblr should have that same vibe for most people. You should feel comfortable in your surroundings, relaxed and confident about who you are. Like all social media sites it allows you to block, follow, message and seek support from the platform workers. Support as in help with your profile, someone that's following you or someone that's messaging you; not support as in providing therapy for your low self esteem issues. You should strive to have good self esteem before you go out and socialize not try to obtain it by going out to socialize as that can get awkward and may lead to other issues.

When people are tipsy, they tend to talk about sex or who they want to hook up with or ask someone if they want to hookup. It happens a lot more while tipsy than sober but alcohol free dating can still be lots of fun depending on who you are meeting up with that day.

People also tend to talk about business but business conversations are usually muted and based on an overview for a project with very little details. Nobody wants to agree to a contract while drunk and commit to timelines, deadlines, milestones, goals and resources on a whim. So usually a business conversation at a bar might turn into an invitation to meet at an office during business hours where all parties are expected to be sober; at least until after the project details, schedules, timelines, pay and required resources are reviewed and agreed to. During breach of contract, a judge will not care that the parties were drunk or that they met at a bar. They will evaluate what the contract said and if the signatures are valid. For that reason, people are advised to never sign on the dotted line while drunk but definitely feel free to celebrate once a deal is made.

At a bar, after having a few tumblers, people may also talk about things they like to do outside of work. Usually drink at a bar is kind of a mundane answer. It's like being at concert and being asked, what do you like to do for fun and replying I like to go to concerts.

Now, if drinking at a bar is your only source of enjoyment outside of work, definitely feel free to express that as it helps people filter friends into specific categories. You might end up being everyone's drinking buddy and there's usually nothing wrong with that as long as you don't also like to gossip.

One of the cool things about socializing is that you never know who you might meet or what type of things they might be into and its a good idea to have an open mind. If you can share 1 thing in common with a person, they might introduce you to things you didn't know existed or weren't aware that they were so easily accessible. If you're already at the same bar, or platform; well, you both gravitate towards the same interest but please don't follow people around with a list of things they like so you can pretend you like those things too. Its often taken as insulting but a gift to do something the other person likes but your not into can come off as less insulting.

Lastly, keep in mind people's profession if they shared that with you and try to refrain from getting free advice or services because they are drunk or in a good mood. It can get annoying, especially if they don't like to hurt people's feelings. For example, asking a lawyer for her number and then chatting her up about your friend that's in jail can get kind of awkward especially if she liked you and now you presented her with a conflict of interest. But talking to someone that's a lawyer and saying hey, do you mind if we chat on Monday about something that requires legal services might be less awkward. However, keep in mind that dating is likely off limits if you present a lawyer with yourself as a dating partner and your friends, family and co-workers as new clients.

Also keep in mind, that some people date their co-workers and some people don't. Sexual harassment policies from work are deeply ingrained in a lot of people so keep that in mind as you mingle and make friends, business acquaintances or both. There's specific focus groups offline and on the internet that specifically deal with issues related to dating co-workers or doing business with significant others. By default, the majority usually stay away from things like that and prefer to date outside of their work or outside of their industry but its not illegal to date your co-workers or solely within your industry. Do so at your own risk and with all prior warning in mind.

Tumblr is a place to socialize, make friends, express interests and hobbies. It is a place to express sexuality and sexual preferences. It can be a place for business, especially if your business is less formal or involves products or services meant for gatherings, events and parties. For many people it is a place to hang out and have fun, exchange memes, quotes, hobbies and interests. It can be used to exchange photography, poems, short stories or blog posts. It is what you make of it as it has various features and customizations. Overall it should be somewhere you feel safe and comfortable enough to post your content so you can find other people with similar interests.

You've written before about Farmer's Market Marcus, but how about going to the source: you and Marcus take a day trip to the countryside to visit an artisan working farm. There are goats (mmmmm, goat cheese 🤤) and lavender fields and an art studio where they make beeswax candles from the farm's apiary. And of course, an on-site café, featuring sandwiches made from their own fresh food products.

You and Marcus share a sandwich made with goat cheese and arugula from the farm, fresh mozzarella, fig jam, and double smoked ham.

And there may or may not be fresh donuts for you and Marcus to take home and reprise your Donut Delights activities... 😏

Expanding your reach

There’s been a lot of talk in writeblr recently (and for a while now) about the importance of interacting with other people’s posts beyond just dropping a like and keep scrolling, and while that is important for helping creators grow their reach, there are actually a few things you can do yourself that can also help. 

*note: this is in no way meant to replace the conversation about interacting with others, nor is it meant to blame creators for not having reach because that sentiment is toxic and unproductive. Rather, it’s tips creators can choose to impliment or not in addition to the ask that people do more to interact.

Anyyywaayyy...

1) Tag your shit 

Tumblr’s search algorithm works pretty much exclusively on tags (it’ll sometimes put things on your dash based on people you follow, but don’t rely on that). Basically, the more tags you put, the easier it is for people to stumble across.

The first five tags on your post will be the ones that will make your post show up in tags people follow (for example, if someone follows #writing advice and that tag is in your first five, it will show up in that person’s tracked tags). A general rule of thumb is to put popular tags in your first five. For writing, those might be (#writing, #writeblr, #spilled ink, #writing humor, #writing advice, etc). Which tags you choose will depend on the content of your post.

The first twenty tags (including the first five described above) will show up when you put something into the search bar. When it comes to these, do not hold back. The more tags you put, the more likely it is for someone to see it. Key think: make sure tags are relevant to your post. If you tag a post that’s an advice post about worldbuilding and tag it #writing memes, you’re not going to gain a lot of traction based off the tag because people will search that looking for -- you guessed it -- Writing memes! 

All tags on your post will show up in the blog navigation search bar, so if you have specific tags for say, original posts or something, the place to put that is often after your original twenty tags if you have a lot.

Another important thing: tags on reblogs don’t show up EXCEPT within a specific person’s blog! This is to keep popular duplicates from showing up in the main search engine but it also means that if you don’t have any tags on your post, the only way it’s going to get passed around is through reblogs and we’ve all heard how that’s going.

2) Reblog your own stuff

This is one that helped me a lot when I was getting started, though now I don’t do it as often. BUT it is seriously 100% okay to reblog your own stuff. Like with tagging, it helps with visibility, as it pulls it to the top of your dash, and it slaps it on all of your follower’s dashboards.

Similarly, if there’s a post you’re especially proud of, don’t be afraid to pin it (click on the three little dots in the top corner to get a dropdown with the option to pin your post). This won’t necessarily make it easier to stumble across, but it will be the first thing visitors to your blog will see.

3) Be consistant (depending on what style blog you run and its purpose, this one can be optional)

This is more aimed at increasing follower count than reblog count, but more followers usually means increased chance of reblogs, at least in some capacity.

People are frequently drawn to blogs because they are drawn to the content. People also frequently don’t reblog things they don’t like. Basically consistancy will help with visibility because people are more likely to engage in content they signed up for. 

Personally, I have also found that having a regular posting schedule/clear hiaitus posts to be helpful as well so that people don’t assume you’re a dead blog. Your posting schedule, should you choose to impliment it, can be whatever you want (schedule post/queue makes it fairly easy to post on time), though I would recommend putting the schedule in your bio or somewhere where people can see that you have a posting schedule. With hiaitus, what I do that works for me is make a post saying I’m going on hiaitus for at least X time and that I will update on X date. I also put in the tags what date I posted it. This can help assure your audience that you’re not a dead blog, while still being able to take time away for yourself because PLEASE TAKE CARE OF YOUR MENTAL HEALTH!

4) Interact with others and be a part of the community

Two reasons for this: a) you can’t expect others to interact with you if you don’t interact with them. b) the more you interact, the more likely it is for them to see you and possibly check out your blog.

Some ways to interact: 

Comment

Reblog

Take part in tag games (no one’s going to get mad if you jump in without actually being tagged - go for it!)

Send people asks and take part in ask games 

Ask to be put on taglists

If you’re posting content that involves taglists, let people know that they can join if they want - (they’ll get regular updates when you post, so they’re more likely to see your stuff)

5) Make your blog a nice place to be

I’m not talking about the aesthetic so much (though do what you think looks good), as I am talking about how you conduct yourself when you’re on your blog. 

Some good things to do are:

Being friendly and respectful

Giving people the benifit of the doubt

Avoiding snarky responses or answers (sarcasm is okay, as long is it’s clear that it’s lighthearted and not intended to be hurtful or mean)

Avoiding posting or spreading offensive, harmful, or dehumanizing content

Avoiding pointless or toxic drama

Basically, once people associate you as not a nice person, or not someone they want to interact with, they won’t interact with you (except sometimes to antagonize), and you are probably never going to win them back. So if you have to take out your frustration, do it away from your blog, and preferably somewhere that isn’t public because a) no one likes that, and b) it will never make you look good.

But say you do mess up - you realize you’ve hurt somebody without meaning to, or you’ve done something that just wasn’t okay. Then what?

Apologize. If you’re realizing what you did on your own, make a post explaining

that you’re sorry for what you did

you understand why it’s hurtful (explain the why)

what your intentions were (if that’s relevant, sometimes it’s not)

that you recognize that your intentions and what happened did not match

if there is something to do to fix what was done beyond apologizing, explain what you will do.

If someone else called you out on it, do the same thing as you did above, and also remember not to get super defensive. If you believe you were not in the wrong, do a bit of research before responding - you may have crossed a line you didn’t know existed. If you do that research and you still believe that they’re wrong, do not attack them, and PLEASE be civil with your response. Otherwise you’re going to get swept up into petty drama with a lot of big feelings involved and that never ends well.

Remember - apologies are not meant to be ways to get attention, and you should not do the whole “wo is me” gig - it undermines the whole point. Instead, it’s about recognising that you messed up, and doing what you can to make repairs. 

6) Celebrate your wins

Maybe one of your posts did really well, or you get to a certain follower count - don’t be afraid to celebrate!

This can be something like a post saying “I just reached x-milestone, I’m so excited!”

Or you can do something special. For example, when I got to a follower milestone, I did a bonus post every day for the week.

Remember that it’s not about “we have to get to x-milestone in order to do the thing,” but it’s “hey we did the think that’s awesome!”
