19, 24, 48 for the bots
19. what video game have you put the most time into?
Frank: Minecraft. I-like-creative-mode.
AJ: Uhh-probably-Steamworld-Dig-2. I-don't-know, there's-just-something-kind-of-relaxing-about-hacking-away-at-chunks-of-dirt. I-also-like-the-story, and-Dot-is-kind-of-cute...
Ace: So there's this really cool hand-drawn puzzle game series called Submachine. I've been playing that for a couple years now and still haven't beat all the games, some of the clues are really well hidden. But the artwork is incredible! Especially in the later games.
24. do you collect anything unusual?
Frank: I-have-small-stones-I've-collected-from-every-realm-I've-been-to. Some-of-them-are-very-pretty.
AJ: I-don't-know, is-collecting-playing-card-decks-unusual?
Ace: Kind of the same as Frank, but I collect feathers instead of stones.
48. if you could pick one craft to instantly be good at, which one would it be?
Frank: Wire-wrapping.
AJ: I-kind-of-like-the-idea-of-resin-casting! And-making-my-own-molds-too.
Ace: Sculpting, I guess. Making stuff with clay could be pretty fun.

If you mean this thing in the background of the Oasis, which is what I'm referring to
Tumblr media
Then yes! I double checked the background assets but I couldn't find anything else. Hope I didn't miss anything lol
Also I'm about to pull out my inner avgeek a little. I apologize in advance sdjfsdjksjk
So. This thing
Tumblr media
This thing is a partial fuselage of a plane using jet turbine engines (you can see one next to the steps). This is actually pretty significant because besides Vectron (and the half-life easter egg whose canonicity is dubious), it's one of the last, most modern inventions of humanity that we've seen in SteamWorld. It gives us an idea of when humanity's downfall could've begun.
Jet turbines started becoming more common in the early 1940s when various military aircraft started being built with them. They were used quite a bit in World War II- however if you go and look at them they don't quite look like this thing.
Despite the military green, this thing actually looks more like commercial jetliners- mostly because of the position of front windows. Some military planes with jet engines, mainly cargo transport ones, do actually look like this now but most of them are gray, and the fuselage design kinda takes after their commercial counterparts. The more notable fighter jets usually have the windows surrounding the entire cockpit.
Commercial jetliners started taking off (hah) in the late 1950s when de Havilland and Boeing built their game changing planes, the Comet and the 707. The implications of this are funny to me because Pan-Am was ferrying rich people across the Caribbean in clipper planes LONG before these jets started flying. Commercial aviation was very much a thing; it wasn't affordable but it sure was profitable.
Combine this with the fact that Turtle Bucket EXPLICITLY call's Dot's jetpack a "jet engine". These bots definitely know what jet engines are and how they operate.
Going by these two things, there very well could be pilot steambots. Commercial aviation could possibly even be a thing.
As for a potential date of humanity's downfall... A bunch of experimental jetpacks started appearing in the late 1950s and early 1960s according to Wikipedia. Going by this and the existence of these jet planes I would maybe date humanity's downfall to the late 1960s to early 1970s. This gives us some time for jetpack innovation to continue to the point that steambots are eventually able to perfect it. It also gives us time for computers to start showing up; ones that are at least powerful enough to get humans on the moon (though whether that happened or not in the SteamWorld universe is yet to be seen LOL)
Just discovered that jet planes (or at least the remains of them) exist in SteamWorld and it kinda feels like my world got tipped on its head

Imagine: Dorothy and Rusty, some point after Dig 2, as the protagonists of The Gunk.
Travelling space together in a small makeshift ship. Gathering resources. Pinging a promising new energy source. Finding this strange, desolate world, that turns out to be not so desolate after all.
Fighting Gunk. Saving aliens.
It would be so nice to have something like that easy banter between the protagonists happen between Dot and Rusty. <3
Of course, I don't know which one of them could take Becks’ role. I don’t think either of them would be willing to back off, neither from a mystery nor from someone needing help. I did see a lot of Dot in Rani, but Rusty could easily have taken point, too, which Becks wasn't willing to do. And the point in the game where Becks tries to stop Rani from going on would definitely have to play out differently - although I can imagine scenarios where they’d come into conflict about how to proceed.
Even if it was entirely new steambot characters, I think the whole environmental theme of this game would hit a lot harder if the characters had been (post x2 apocalyptic) robots. The amazement they feel over that bright, colorful nature would have an extra edge. Wandering the ruins and being reminded of the old Earth.  And then realizing that the people of this planet have done something horrible, that is still ongoing - and at the same time realizing that Earth must once have been much like this planet.
The Gardener tells Rani she's a hypocrite - because humans have messed up their own world, so how can she judge? - but that scene would have so much more punch with a bot. The robot that wouldn't even exist if the original people of their world hadn't used every resource and technological advantage. And the bot doesn’t even have a homeworld anymore. There's some delicious moral ambiguity there, in a scenario that's otherwise pretty clear-cut.
"What's wrong with wilderness?" Rani asks in the end. Tell me that line wouldn't be stronger if said by a steambot who has just started to question some fundamental facts about their own existence.

In chapter one of Connecting Dots, there's a reference to Dorothy having a nice, cozy coat she got from Penny. I got it absolutely stuck in my head that it was light blue.

Steamworld Dig 2
Developer: Image & Form Games Publisher:  Image & Form Games Rrp: £14.99 (Gog.com, Humblebundle and Steam) Released: 22nd September 2017 Available on: Gog.com, Humblebundle and Steam I have to say it's impressive just how many games have appeared from the Steamworld IP. When I picked up Steamworld Dig I assumed it would be a one off, a fun idea but that's it. Now we're on...  four games, I think? With each one progressing an overarching narrative as far as I can tell. This time you play as Dorathy (or 'Dot') who was an NPC in the previous game. She's on the hunt for Rusty, the player character from the previous Steamworld Dig and she's managed to track him to a town named El Machino.
Tumblr media
Sadly there really isn't much I can say about this game that I didn't already state for its predecessor. Sure, its an overall improvement with graphics being polished up and the characters having a more fluid animation motion to them. But with a few small exceptions, it's the same game, and that's not a bad thing the first one was very good! If you want to read the review for the last game click HERE. A new feature is the upgrade cogs that are scattered around the world. These cogs allow you to apply effects to your equipment, what's interesting is that these cogs can be reassigned at the workbench located in the hub town of El Machino.

Idea: Rusty totally has a lady bot here and there that like his rugged cowbot style. They think he's stoic and mysterious, but he's just quiet. He is usually oblivious to this unless they're being very overt. Dot watches this from afar with amusement and some exasperation.
Bot: “G-Good morning, Rusty!” Rusty: *tips hat as he passes* “Mornin’, miss.” Bot: *melts*
Rusty: *approaching Dot* “Bots sure are friendly in this here town.” Dot: *trying not to smirk* “Oh yeah?”
