Comparison between Shadow of the Colossus and Dororo
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I've been a Dororo fan for years now and I just recently played Team Ico's games for the first time. So, here I'll try to list things that Shadow of the Colossus and Dororo have in common. My theory is that Fumito Ueda was inspired by Osamu Tezuka's work and, vice versa, Ueda's works inspired the 2019 anime adaptation of Dororo. Now, if this was common knowledge, then my bad! If that's not the case, these will be just lots of comparisons. Spoilers ahead!
First of all, both Wander and Hyakkimaru have a goal, and they are determined to reach it, no matter what. Wander wants to bring Mono back to life, while Hyakkimaru wants to collect his bodyparts, that were taken by evil spirits at birth due to a contract his father made to gain power. The demons in Dororo are 48, which is the number of Colossi Ueda initially planned to have in his game.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, we know that within the colossi lie severed segments of Dormin's body. As Hyakkimaru defeats a demon, he collects a body part back. So, both the fiends in Dororo and the Colossi in Shadow of the Colossus hold a piece of body. But while in Dororo once these creatures are slayed the body part goes back to its original owner, in Shadow of the Colossus Wander is the vessel of Dormin's body, which is collected through those dark trails that pierce him after each battle.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the beginning of Dororo's original manga from 1967, Lord Daigo, Hyakkimaru's dad, enters a shrine and finds various devil statues. Here, he makes a contract with the evil spirits, the 48 devil gods. He seeks power, but the price to pay is the body of his own child. Doesn't that sound familiar? Wander also enters a shrine adorned with various idols, where he asks Dormin, the being that controls the souls of the dead, for Mono to be revived. But Dormin warns him that the price he'll pay would be heavy. Both the evil gods and Dormin, while promising what the human desires, ask for something important in return. They are also kind of making fun of the mortals for their requests.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'd also like to add that, as the Dororo manga continues and picks up with Hyakkimaru now being 14 years old, his lover, Mio, is already dead. We just see her through flashbacks, as the boy tells his story to Dororo. We don't know what's the relationship between Mono and Wander, but it's clear that he deeply cares about her, either as a lover, friend or sister.
(While I'm not sure if this is simply fan speculation or not, wasn't an alternative ending gonna feature Mono come back to life but blind, and she would've slowly regained her eyesight? If this was an actual scrapped ending, it would literally reference a core theme in Hyakkimaru's journey).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As for the rest, the two stories are completely different, but the beginning is pretty similar, at least in my opinion. I feel like Ueda could've been influenced by Osamu Tezuka's work. Back in 2019 a Dororo anime remake aired, a retelling of the story. Just like all the other Dororo adaptations, a lot of things were changed from the original manga. The 48 demons were cut to 12, and another major change is the additional grey morality that envelops the entirety of the show. In the original manga, Daigo wanted to be a powerful ruler and gave his son away without regret. Here, he seeks help from the demons to archieve that, yes, but his lands are being destroyed by famines and epidemics. While he has egoistical ambitions, he's also helping his people. As you watch the anime, you start to question: who is right and who is wrong? Who is truly evil here? Which are questions we all asked ourselves while playing Shadow of the Colossus. While you play, you know why you're slaying the Colossi, but you do start to wonder if you're really doing the right thing. They are just giant creatures, some peaceful if not attacked, and are the only inhabitants of the Forbidden Lands. Is Wander the true villain, is it Dormin, or is it Emon? Is there even a true villain at all, or just characters at cross purpouses?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In Dororo, you root for Hyakkimaru, deprived of his own body. But, as he kills more and more demons, the lands are yet again subjected to droughts and floods. And, on his first encounter with Lord Daigo, his father asks him to stop collecting his body for the sake of the lands. The morally grey character of Hyakkimaru, I feel like, could be inspired by Fumito Ueda's work. There's a major difference in the ending though. As Wander's journey makes him loose his humanity, Hyakkimaru's is the opposite. Withing him, he also has bits of evil spirits enbedded into his soul, much like Wander.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But while Hyakkimaru is plagued by doubts, and sometimes lets the demonic part of him loose, he ultimately reaches his goal to be whole again. With the death of all the demons, the natural disasters stop, starting a period of peace. He gets his humanity back, something that Wander only archieves after being reborn.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also, this is totally just speculation, but the thing about Hyakkimaru's demon slaying causing illnesses and epidemics might be a reference to ICO. In the PS2 manual (at least in the italian one I own) it is stated that the horned children are believed to be cursed, bringing misfortunes to befall the villages. Another thing added to the 2019 anime adaptation of Dororo is the fact that with each evil spirit Hyakkimaru kills, the idol that represents it at the shrine (where Daigo made the contract) breaks. Which is literally what happens in Shadow of the Colossus.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I'd also like to add that Dororo also has a videogame adaptation for the PS2 called Blood will tell, that contains 48 fiends to defeat in order to retrieve Hyakkimaru's body parts. It came out just a year before Shadow of the Colossus did, and it's such a fun game. It has some amazing looking fiends and, fun fact, Blood will tell's japanese cover art is also a beautiful drawing (made by Hiroaki Samura), while the western box art is a 3D rendition of the main character, much like ICO. Though, not as ugly ;)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I can't tell if this game actually influenced Shadow of the Colossus or not, but it's pretty fun to spot the similarities between the two. The final boss, Behemoth, is the biggest out of the 48 fiends, and its fight is divided in various sections. In one of these, you have to stand on Behemoth's hand so that it can bring you close to its face to attack. It reminded me of the Malus fight.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In another section, you have to climb the fiend's back to destroy its weak spots, which are horns with a very familiar blue tint that shoot lightings. This reminded me a lot of Pelagia (but also of Basaran and Quadratus).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And the last section features Behemoth charging at you while it flies, which of course reminded me of the Avion fight.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thank you for reading all my yapping about pieces of media I love deeply! After not being able to find many comparison between Dororo and Shadow of the Colossus online, I just had to make one myself. This is my first time making a post like this, so I hope this isn't worded too badly—

I just found the most beautiful anime…
It’s called Dororo, and it’s about a child named Hyakkimaru who was born with all his body parts (save for his head, his internal organs and his middle) stolen by demons because of his father.
He spends 16 years wearing prosthetic arms, legs and a prosthetic face. in a fight against a demon, he meets Dororo and discovers that killing demons will give him back the body parts that were stolen from him from birth.
There are two versions of the anime, and even a movie. But the anime version I will be referring to, is the 2019 version. I will watch the 1969 version after this.
It’s…unbelievable. I can’t fathom having only the sense of taste to navigate the world with for 16 years. He must’ve only relied on his own thoughts for so long…And…he slowly starts to open up to the people around him when he receives more senses and limbs after each bloodshed.
I…I need to properly watch the series. I have to. I can’t just indulge in this information and not watch the series all the way through…
But I need to go to bed first. It’s almost 1am, and I’ve just been watching scenes from the series and spoiling the whole thing for myself. I don’t care about spoilers. I spoil things for myself all the time…because ADHD usually makes a person super curious.

whats dororo?
Oh, man, where do I begin? (I'll try to keep this spoiler-free)
When I refer to Dororo, I usually refer to the 2019 anime adaptation. There was also an animated adaptation released in 1969, and both are based off of a manga published in the late 1960s. The 2019 version is available to watch on prime video, and it's only 24 episodes long, so it's very easy to get through. The first time I watched it, I binged the whole thing over the course of a single night, and if you know me, you know that that's something that I NEVER do. I stayed up until the early hours of the morning to finish this show. If I had to choose just one show to watch for the rest of my life, it would be Dororo (2019).
(WAIT IT'S AVAILABLE ON BLU-RAY NOW???)
(Edit: Somebody also put the whole thing on youtube)
It's hilarious. It's heartbreaking. The aesthetics are incredible, the fight scenes are great, and the quiet moments show their importance. A single episode can make me both laugh and cry. It's also vehemently anti-war, and a large part of this show focuses on ordinary people who are just trying to live despite the conflict around themselves. I also think it introduces just the right amount of fantasy; despite the magical aspects, the world always feels very real.
The only disappointing moment I can think of is the last five minutes or so of the final episode, but I've heard that the ending isn't necessarily canon to the manga, so???
Onto the two main characters:
Dororo
Tumblr media
Most of Dororo's backstory is revealed throughout the series, so I won't go into it here, but essentially, he's a young trans boy that uses thievery to survive. In the first episode, he is saved by Hyakkimaru and confidently slots himself into the role of Hyakkimaru's younger brother.
Hyakkimaru
Tumblr media
Long story short, Hyakkimaru's father made a deal with a bunch of demons wherein the demons could eat his firstborn, and in exchange, his father's land would see prosperous times. One of the demons failed, so though Hyakkimaru was born a husk, he was born alive. After being abandoned, he's found by a prosthetist. His face? A mask. His limbs? Prosthetics. His ears, nose, and eyes? All decorative. He has a fake spine and no senses except for maybe taste. Eventually, he figures out that if he kills demons, he can regain the parts of his body that the demons stole. There's a flipside, but it's a spoiler.
At first glance, this sounds like a story of disability being cured, and there is an aspect of that, but Hyakkimaru's new sensory experiences tend to lead to setbacks and challenges (as he has to learn to experience the world in a whole new way), though again, I don't want to get into any spoilers.
His story is moreso about revenge and justice, and though the show brings up a lot of moral questions, it never passes any moral judgements. I find it absolutely fascinating.
not to mention, Hyakkimaru is a gender envy icon
If you're getting into Dororo for the first time, be prepared for some disturbing imagery in the first few episodes. Iirc it's rated 18+, so some of the themes are VERY mature and the episodes aren't afraid to show some gore. When swept up in the charm of the main characters, found family, and exploration of trauma, it's easy to forget that this is also a war story.
Hope this helps!

It was over. It was all finally over. Hyakkimaru had gotten all of his body parts back, and the painful journey that had been filled with spilled blood and tears was over. You were bloodied and battered from fighting, trying to get your way to the Castle of Daigo where Hyakkimaru and Dororo were at. When you had gotten there, you had been surprised to see the Empress of the Daigo homestead, Hyakkimaru’s mother, and Biwamaru.
When you got close to them, Nui hadn’t recognized you from the amount of blood covering you, but Biwamaru instantly knew you.
“(Y/n), Hyakkimaru is inside with Tahomaru.”
You immediately unsheathed your katana, but Nui exclaimed.
“No. You must let me handle this…they are my sons.”
You were quiet. You wanted to help Hyakkimaru, but a mother’s heart was much stronger than an ordinary woman’s. You relented, sheathing your sword, and Nui disappeared into the secret passage within the well just a ways out from the burning castle. Biwamaru mumbled.
“If he is not careful, Hyakkimaru risks becoming a demon himself.”
“Hyakkimaru wouldn’t do that. His heart is human, and his heart is strong. He’s going to be okay.”
You replied. Biwamaru smiled lightly.
“Yes, it is love that will truly save him. You should clean yourself off or the blood will become hard to wash off. You have earned your rest.”
You nodded and sat down, rubbing a cloth against your face to clear it of any blood. Once your face was cleaned, a small cut revealing itself on your cheek from all the blood, you stood up, tucking the bloodied rag into your obi. The sound of Dororo’s voice coming from the well made you perk up, and you helped Biwamaru pull the two up. When you got the two of them up, your breath was taken away from the sheer brightness of Hyakkimaru’s eyes.
His eyes were on you, taking in your face in, and his cheeks tainted pink slightly. Dororo panted and cried out, making Hyakkimaru tilt his head in confusion.
“(Y/n)!”
He ran to you, and you hugged Dororo tightly, sighing in relief.
“I was so scared you wouldn’t get here!”
You smiled at him, and you murmured.
“I told you that I was gonna be here, didn’t I?”
Hyakkimaru’s eyes widened and he asked.
“(Y/n)?”
You stood up and clenched your jaw lightly, almost nervous and feeling exposed now that Hyakkimaru could see.
“Hyakkimaru…you’re okay.”
Hykkarimu’s face broke out into a deep blush, and you were surprised. Dororo’s own eyes widened, and Hyakkimaru said shyly.
“You are very beautiful.”
Hyakkimaru turned to Dororo, asking.
“Are you sure that’s (Y/n)?”
Dororo began to laugh, and you covered your face, embarrassed. Biwamaru chuckled, and Dororo slapped his knee, saying.
“Hyakkimaru, you’re so funny! Of course, that’s (Y/n)! What, can’t believe someone as gorgeous as her is your girlfriend?”
Hyakkimaru shook his head and Dororo laughed harder, falling to the ground. You laughed lightly yourself, rubbing your bloody arm in embarrassment.
“Please, I’m covered in blood and guts, I cant possibly be so gorgeous right now.”
Hyakkimaru answered honestly, taking your hand within his own.
“I have never lied to you. You are very beautiful.”
You looked back into his eyes, taking in their beautiful chestnut color. You mumbled softly, placing a clean hand on his cheek, rubbing your thumb back and forth.
“You’ve always been beautiful to me…and your eyes are very pretty too. I hope you can see yourself soon.”
Hyakkimaru’s eyes softened lightly, and you smiled.
“Even when you couldn’t see, your eyes were always expressive in a way…but now they are incredibly intense. It makes me embarrassed to be within your gaze.”
You flushed, rubbing the back of your head, and Hyakkimaru smiled lightly at you. Dororo got up, asking.
“Does this mean that we can finally be a family?”
You asked, your free hand on your hip now, tightening your hold on Hyakkimaru’s warm hand.
“When haven’t we been a family, Dororo?”
Dororo smiled widely, and you chuckled when he ran into your legs, hugging you. You bent down, hugging Dororo back, and you mumbled into his ear.
“We’re going to be alright.”
Dororo nuzzled your chest, and you stood up, pushing him back a bit.
“But you really shouldn’t hug me, Dororo. I’m covered in blood.”
Hyakkimaru asked, his hands running over your shoulders and trying to inspect you for wounds.
“You’re not hurt, are you?”
You flushed and mumbled, taking his hands within your own.
“Shouldn’t it be me asking you that?”
Hyakkimaru sighed lightly, and you smiled lightly.
“I promise, I’m okay.”
Hyakkimaru nodded and you began to speak to Biwamaru. About what, Hyakkimaru didn’t know. All Hyakkimaru knew was that you were incredibly beautiful, and that he was truly lucky to have you in his life.
Yes, he was indeed lucky.
Hyakkimaru smiled when you ran your hand through his hair, flashed him a beautiful smile, and began to walk with Biwamaru and Dororo to the village below, beginning his new path to humanity.

Dororo is all like "oh no my big secret is out" but Hyakkimaru has probably no fucking clue there was supposed to be a secret in the first place
I mean, he can't see, he couldn't hear until recently, he has no hands to touch, couldn't feel...he's just been going through his life looking at vaguely human shaped soul flames...
If anything, the first time he probably realized not all people where the same was with Mio and she was already in her teens and kids in Dororo's age are super hard to tell apart by voice alone, especially when you have zero experience doing so
What I'm saying is that Dororo is freaking out that Hyakkimaru knows now while he has no idea what the big deal is
"This is Dororo and Dororo is always with me and that's cool...no I don't know what Dororo is, could be a vaguely human shaped and talking goat for all I know, but I like Dororo and that's all that matters"
To Hyakkimaru Dororo is Dororo and everything else is just unimportant additional details.

I’m honestly disappointed with the timing of Mio’s death.
I knew it was going to happen and that it was going to be a big moment. Both of those things I was totally fine with - if I like anything, it’s dramatic, tragic love stories. But...
I really wish that it had happened after Hyakkimaru and Mio had had a chance to have more than three meaningful interactions in total.
Her death WAS a solidly written, animated and acted scene, but it feels unearned to me. They’d only just started to get to know each other, literally the day before she died. Killing her now just feels like a waste of potential. And somehow, I don’t think that that was the type of tragedy they were going for.

Earlier this week, I wrote an alternate continuity fanfiction from Mutsu’s perspective which I titled “Needs of the Few.”
The previous week, I had observed that while Tahomaru was very much “The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few....” that was when the few didn’t include someone who was important to him and had been so his whole life. As soon as Mutsu decided to place herself in the category of “the few,” he had a problem with it. And yes, to a certain extent, I do still wish that had been something that was brought up sooner so we would have more time to explore that both as viewers and for him as a character.
And then that spawned into that fanfiction and then that turned into me making an absurd number of Wrath of Khan references in my head, which turned into this, based on a screenshot from that movie.
On a semi-related but branching off note, I hadn’t thought of it before rewatching episode 22 to get clothing references for everyone, but in some ways, Tahomaru in the actual 2019 anime reminds me a little of Khan. Like, if Khan started out as a good guy. Both begin with what they at least see as a noble goal, but become increasingly motivated by revenge as the story continues. Intentionally or otherwise, they begin doing things that are increasingly villainous, but they still maintain that they are in the right because of their motivations.
The big moment that made me think this was actually Tahomaru’s final moment with Mutsu, wherein she tells him she believes he can create a land of peace, and his ultimate response is to decide to avenge Hyogo and Mutsu in a final attempt to take down Hyakkimaru. Because I had already watched some scenes from Wrath of Khan to draw inspiration for the poses, it reminded me of Khan over his (implicitly) adopted son’s body, as he begged him to abandon his revenge, and Khan immediately swears to avenge him by overloading Genesis and taking Kirk down with him.
There are, of course, massive differences in the characters. Tahomaru’s not a genocidal madman who tortures space stations full of scientists for information and gleefully proclaims he wants to hurt the hero until he is left “marooned for all eternity in the center of a dead planet. Buried alive...” (Though he is equally prone to screaming the protagonist’s name when he’s angry) and his original motivations are generally benevolent ones. He just doesn’t quite get that the sacrifice in Wrath of Khan would have read very differently if Spock had used “the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one” to justify pushing McCoy in to correct the alignment, metaphorically speaking.
So I’m not saying Tahomaru is Khan. I’m saying they have similar motive decays as their original plans become increasingly warped by a desire for vengeance, eventually knowingly (because I refuse to believe neither of them considers this possibility) throwing themselves to their death in hopes of taking down their adversary and avenging a loved one.
