Party Banter with Rook!Blackwall
Harding: You know, for a moment back there, I thought you might actually get through to Solas.
Thom: Regret’s something we have in common. I thought… if I reached out to him, told him I understood what guilt drives you to do…
Harding: But no. ‘Do not compare your regrets with mine, Thom Rainier!’
Thom: He’s right, though. He can at least say he did his crimes trying to stop tyrants. I did mine for coin.
Harding: Uh, yeah, and then you faced up to it and decided no one else was going to get hurt for it except you. Solas is right. He’s nothing like you.
—
Lucanis: Do we have a problem, Warden Rainier?
Thom: You kill people. For gold.
Lucanis: I do. Venatori. Blood mages. The political rivals of those who hired me.
Thom: And that’s enough for you? Someone flashes a purse, and you’re ready to murder over some nobles’ spat over which of them gets the bigger fancy house?
Lucanis: Depends on the size of the purse.
—
Bellara: Um, so, about the mayor of D'Meta's Crossing? I just… do you really want someone like that? In the Wardens, I mean.
Thom: I won’t defend him. But he wouldn’t be the first Warden who let innocent people die for gold, and got another chance from the Order.
Bellara: He doesn’t deserve it. Like, really, really doesn’t deserve it.
Thom: No. Neither did I.
—
Thom: Do you ever get people trying to bribe you? To look the other way, or drop a case, or...
Neve: It's Minrathous. If I took even half the bribes I've been offered, I could buy an estate in Hightown.
Thom: It takes a special kind of strength to resist that.
—
Thom: I got a letter from Sera the other day. Don’t ask me how she got it to the Lighthouse.
Harding: ‘Friends’, I bet. And hey - she dealt with the Fade for you! So what'd she say?
Thom: Well, there was a lot of calling Solas a shite-faced arseknuckle. And then she told me not to get killed, or she’d yank my beard ‘til my head came off.
Harding: Aw.
—
Lucanis: Rainier, I do not knife civilians. Everyone I have killed has been embedded in politics. Their hands are never clean.
Thom: And you're sure you’ve never made a mistake? Never got a passer-by or a child caught in all the blades and arrows? Never gone in without knowing everything, and got someone hurt?
Lucanis: Of course not. I’m a professional.
Thom: You’re a mercenary with a cape.
—
Thom: You could’ve left Dock Town. A mage. Talented. You could’ve gone anywhere, chased a better life.
Neve: If I left, I’d be abandoning people who never got that choice. I’m good where I’m at.
Thom: I hope you know how admirable that makes you.
Neve: Not that admirable. If I got that estate in Hightown? Too far to walk to Hal’s fish stand.
Thom: (laughs) Good priorities.
—
Davrin: So, Rainier. Heard a lot of rumours about how you joined the Wardens.
Thom: (uneasy noise) You know, Warden Blackwall told me your past gets forgotten after the Joining.
Davrin: A nice ideal, but it never stands up to the gossip. But you’ve shown your worth.
Thom: Enough for me to have one of those griffons when we rescue them, d’you reckon?
Davrin: (laughs) We’ll see.
—
Thom: I knew someone like Manfred once. He was a spirit, but he sort of… grew his own body.
Emmrich: Oh! A spontaneous incarnation! Do you happen to know what kind of spirit he was?
Thom: Uh… the kind that looks like a young man, but reads minds and flits about trying to make everyone feel better about themselves?
Emmrich: Ah, Compassion! A rather more advanced emotion than Curiosity, and therefore capable of manifesting a physical body, rather than needing to adopt a vacant one.
Thom: More advanced? Right. That explains why Cole used to talk to me about living with the weight of regret, and Manfred spent ten minutes yesterday poking my face to see if my beard came off.
—
Neve: So, you know Dorian?
Thom: Does anyone who’s been in the same room as him for thirty seconds get a choice about knowing Dorian?
Neve: And didn’t always get along, I take it.
Thom: He’s… he’s not so bad. We might’ve judged each other by first impressions back when we met.
Neve: And what’s your impression now?
Blackwall: Still too fancy for his own good. But it says exactly who he is that he’s fighting against slavers and blood mages. I think I got the better deal with the darkspawn.
—
Taash: I heard the Inquisitor turned into a dragon.
Thom: No, she… didn’t. But she did get one to fight with us once.
Taash: She did? What kind? How’d she do it?
Thom: Sort of… gold? And she drank from this pool of elven magic, and… that somehow let her ask it to help us. I think.
Taash: Did she ride it into battle?
Thom: Uh… No.
Taash: Oh. I would’ve ridden it into battle.
—
Thom: Emmrich, do you know what those demons were the other day? The ones that wouldn’t leave me alone?
Emmrich: Ah. Those were manifestations of Shame. A variant of the Despair spirit.
Thom: Right. Don’t know what I expected.
Emmrich: If it’s any consolation, I find that one can tell much more about a person from the more benign spirits that gather around them. I catch glimpses of them about you often. Valour. Fortitude. Honour.
Thom: I hope to be worthy of them.
—
Thom: Lucanis, have you ever regretted any of your kills?
Lucanis: Not so far.
Thom: So this is what you’re fine with being? A man who takes nobles’ money and lives in luxury with your bloodied hands? That's the life you chose?
Lucanis: Not ‘chose’, exactly. It is what I was trained to be since my childhood.
Thom: Wait. You were – who trains a child to be an assassin?
Lucanis: You met my grandmother.
—
Davrin: You held up pretty well in the last fight, Rainier. For an old man.
Thom: Whelp like you’d better watch what he says around a senior Warden.
Davrin: Why? You’ll tell me to do the fifty press-ups that your creaky bones can’t handle?
Thom (laughs) I’ll stop letting you borrow my best chisel.
—
Bellara: Hey, um, Thom? You know that little rocking griffon you made? Could you make, I don’t know, a bigger one? Like… adult… person-sized?
Thom: (chuckles) You never have a rocking griffon growing up?
Bellara: No! They’re not a Dalish thing! Because you can’t really rock. When the aravel’s moving, I mean. So… no, it’s a dumb idea. Forget I said anything.
Thom: You want me to make it a rocking halla?
Bellara: Yes please thank you.
—
Emmrich: How far you must have travelled, with both the Inquisition and the Wardens!
Thom: I like being on the road. Keeps a man honest.
Emmrich: I rather envy your fearlessness of the wider world. It’s so recent that the end of the Circles allowed me to travel freely outside the Necropolis.
Thom: Must have been freeing. Having the whole world suddenly open to you.
Emmrich: And rather overwhelming, I must admit. When I compare myself to you – a brave Warden, combatting the Blight across all of Thedas…
Thom: Trust me: compare the two of us, and that’s the only way I’ll come out better from it.
—
Thom: We fought quite a few dragons in the Inquisition. Almost got eaten once by some pissed-off beast in the Hinterlands. Kept throwing its dragonlings at us.
Taash: Fereldan Frostbacks are crappy mothers. First sign of trouble, and it’s ‘here! Take my children!’
Thom: (laughs) The worst was the lightning-spitter off the Storm Coast. Spent twenty minutes hacking away at its scales, rest of my team unconscious on the ground.
Taash: Wait - you what? That's not how you fight dragons. You can't just stand there and hit them. That's stupid. And boring.
—
Lucanis: It’s how the Crow Houses work. Children of the House lineage are trained from our infancy.
Thom: Andraste’s fucking tits.
Lucanis: It’s necessary. If Illario and I had been coddled… Caterina pushed us hard and young, because she wanted us to survive.
Thom: I don’t… (sighs) The things people do to children.
—
Harding: I never thought to ask - how come Varric changed your nickname?
Thom: I asked him to go with something else. 'Hero'... that was a name he gave to Blackwall.
Harding: Well, he chose the right name. You know, 'cause Rooks move in straight lines. And you charge right in there, don't mess around with fancy words, just hit things til they drop. You could say you're -
Thom: Don't do it, Lace.
Harding: Straightforward.
Thom: (chuckles) You're as bad as Sera.
—
Emmrich: Master Rainier, I wanted to say – I hope you know that you’re the only person here who looks at you with any harshness.
Thom: I – (sighs) You don’t know everything about me.
Emmrich: I would never claim to. But I know that you place yourself before your allies and the defenceless without hesitation and with utter selflessness. I know you understand your Warden oath better than many of your superiors. I know that you are a good man.
Thom: … I wish I knew what it was like to be you. Seeing the good in everyone, living or dead.
Emmrich: Then I hope you’ll permit me continue to see the good in you – until you can see yourself as I do.

yeah, you know what, I nuked this post last night because I got very uncertain about the room immediately after posting, but after some further scrutiny, I'm reposting it now with some slightly calmer, more hinged commentary lol
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/63e8649c6356bb0332695f390f3c071d/5c824dfd1aea7f47-b3/s540x810/3156dd799c0b70e82ce0c043f2cb697f0f6489a8.jpg)
consensus seems to be (from the tweet I initially was going off of about the view from his room, and the qunari paraphernalia and training equipment in the basement-room kind of confirming that that one must be Taash's, despite this one having a lot of dragons in it) that this IS indeed Davrin's room, and I wanna talk about some (though not all) parts of interest in it!
Overall the room looks very airy and open, but cozy and warm, if a touch on the sparse side- I'm getting a little bit of a hunter's lodge vibe, which is fitting for a monster hunter like him.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/800b868b2a640fa182179663a39c605e/5c824dfd1aea7f47-f4/s400x600/5ac9c9b5089a54d277ca1fcfdb7ad9b9dd27e31d.jpg)
1.) he apparently loves nugs. and dragons. and bears. and animals, and learning about animals in general, if those diagrams are anything to go by. and I love that for him.
2.) no seriously there are six wooden nug bobblehead-looking things visible just in this one snapshot in his room. this man is INTO nugs. (I hope he and Leliana get to meet. he deserves to pet Schmooples XIV.)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/0b9a80915875e5ce417f86f783d16958/5c824dfd1aea7f47-a6/s540x810/c36cf5c2ed70b192df16f73e497c07e11806c266.jpg)
3.) his carving station! it seems to be a fairly common Warden hobby, and he seems to take it seriously too- just look at that dragon's wing and how thin the part it attaches to the body with is, he's very skilled!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/fc692d947bbd929273d3e755f85f8e14/5c824dfd1aea7f47-39/s400x600/d701a7a383277bddcfc0427b5ee575595cc46e31.jpg)
he was making something in this piece of promo art too!
3.5.) please ser Davrin please i want a little carved nug as a little gift i would cherish it forever i wouldn't ask for anything else for the next 20 birthdays i have please
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/fd4cd927b093b6b45f5a5738a18a1981/5c824dfd1aea7f47-1c/s400x600/0b35ba31cadd95747a5b931108fde81e5a9dfba4.jpg)
4. Assan's "landing pad", maybe? I like the thought of him taking little nightly laps around the Lighthouse, but geez, it looks so dangerous to have the wall just open like that- must feel the most like sleeping under the open air though?
4.5.) from this and Taash's open ceiling I'm guessing that it just fully does not rain at the Lighthouse, which is great, no wet griffon smell in bed
5.) really loving that Veilfire sconce on the wall- it looks exactly like the asset from Inquisition, and it could be a pretty subtle hint to something Dalish going on!
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/7361380c865f7a2e1d70dc00a857f99a/5c824dfd1aea7f47-ae/s400x600/91c2625f2f71993481191736c9b12d2874534df8.jpg)
6.) the clothes/blankets/whatever those are on the cozy chair seem to mirror the colors of his outfit, the Warden blue and the light brown leather- is he perhaps prone to leaving his clothes strewn about? 👀 both Wardens and the Dalish should be used to traveling a lot and living light, so it would make sense for him to not be a super neat person overall! (maybe the only reason the room isn't a right mess is that he doesn't have many possessions, they don't even fill both bookcases)
7.) god if Rook doesn't get to cuddle with him in his cozy chair by the fire (or on those furs, I'm not picky) and watch the sunrise together after a night of vigorous lovemaking that tests the limits of even that fabled Grey Warden stamina, I am going to be very, very sad
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/626846317db7aba6198a8ca13fb85972/5c824dfd1aea7f47-b0/s250x250_c1/dd819822af7d04346d76c627a7b2daf90ada7544.jpg)
8.) Davrin darling. why do you have this. and does it really need to watch. ..... can we turn it so it faces the wall at least. god, Dorian was right (among various other things) about the horrible little feet nugs possess.
anyway the trend continues and everything I learn about this guy makes me want to eat one (1) more brick altogether until i assemble a castle in my stomach from which he can rescue me like the charming knight he is, thank u for ur time
#dragon age: the veilguard#dragon age#davrin#i was very hasty and hyped last night#i am marginally more collected now thank u for asking#god please i deserve nice things happening to me#squirrel plays datv

for the fic writer asks i’d love if you answered 13 and 30
13. A fandom you’re thinking about writing for?
I’m currently working on pieces for Amadeus and Frankenstein, but I’d love to write Beowulf/Grendel, King Arthur/Mordred, Enjolras/Grantaire, Dorian Pavus/Cullen Rutherford, to finish my fem!Wangxian fic, the list goes on and on and on. One of these days!
30. Share a fic you’re particularly proud of.
I personally think Asterius, a retelling of Theseus and the Minotaur, is my best work and the one I’m proudest of. I was inspired to write it after playing Hades, but it mostly follows the beats of the original myth and no familiarity with the game is required. It’s the central question I’m always banging on about - what is monstrosity? What does it mean? Doesn’t a monster’s heart still beat?
For a more traditional style fic, I’m proudest of a few equally:
Blood, Bones, and Butter, a songxuexiao fic of their first time told from all three perspectives, mostly as three character studies
the body as anagram, where, after rescue, Francis processes his grief of losing his true love James Fitzjames by proxyfucking James Clark Ross. Deeply messy, just the way I like it.
Revachol Calling, a deeply personal WIP of how Harry DuBois and Kim Kitsuragi fall in love and what I think a sequel to Disco Elysium would feel like. I will finish this someday, even if just for myself.

She reached up and touched her nose to confirm what she was seeing. “Julian, I'm not entirely sure what's going on, but I'm Jadzia.” Julian raised his eyebrows and Kira turned towards them. Confusion took over her features, followed by disbelief and then realization. She rolled her eyes. “So that's why it feels like there are seven other people in my head. There are.”

Because while Sam took the mantle of Captain America, Bucky took the title of Captain Obvious. Sam snorted. Nice. Sam’s head fell onto Bucky’s shoulder lightly. “Really? I was thinking about just hanging out down here all night. Maybe throw a party,” mumbled Sam into Bucky’s skin. “Go up. I’ll meet you up there,” murmured Bucky, glancing over at his open prosthesis.

Time Period/Location: Terrasen, Adarlan, Skull's Bay, and Eyllwe on the fictional continent of Erilea
First Line: Elide Lochan's breath scorched her throat with every gasping inhale as she limped up the steep forest hill.
Aelin, Aedion, Rowan, Lysandra, Fleetfoot, and Evangeline have finally arrived in Terrasen after a week or two of travel from Adarlan. She arranges a meeting with Lord Darrow, Lord Murtaugh, and Murtaugh's grandson, Ren. They are supposed to meet them in the woods, but the lords demand they come to an inn. When they arrive, Ren and Murtaugh, responsible for Chaol's kidnapping in Crown of Midnight, are shocked to learn that Aelin is Celaena. Lord Darrow is harsh and judgemental, and gives her a decree signed by all of the lords of Terrasen saying she is only a princess and that she is not to be queen unless they see fit. She is discouraged, but as they are leaving the inn, they receive news that the witches are flying to sack Rifthold. She sends Rowan to fly back to rescue Dorian, gives Evangeline and Fleetfoot to Lord Murtaugh to look after, and her, Aedion, and Lysandra make their way to Ilium, a port city in Terrasen that used to be ruled by fierce pirates called the Mycenians.
Meanwhile, Elide travels through the woods on her own to try and get to Terrasen, forging for berries and drinking from streams. She realizes she is being followed. Lorcan senses the Wyrdkey she carries and follows her around, thinking she is Valg. He realizes she is not when she is suddenly hunted down by ilken, terrifying eight foot beasts that were bred by Erawan. Lorcan kills three and Elide evades another, and they manage to make it away. They make a deal to travel together, Lorcan offering protection for Elide's knowledge of Morath. Pretending to be married they join up with a traveling circus to get past the Adarlanian soldiers guarding the river.
At Morath, Erawan reveals his true form, no longer masquerading as Duke Perrington. He orders Manon and the Thirteen, along with Yellowlegs witches led by Iskra, to sack Rifthold. Manon tries to get there before the Yellowlegs, but arrives right as Dorian is about to be attacked by a member of Iskra's coven. Manon kills her, and tells Dorian to flee. Rowan arrives and kills four more witches and tries to kill Manon until Dorian stops him. Rowan and Dorian escape and head for Skull's Bay, and Iskra accuses Manon of being a witch killer. She lies and says that the sentinel attacked her first, but Iskra doesn't believe her and runs back to Morath. When Manon arrives, she is put on trial. The Matrons ultimately decide that while Manon will live, Asterin must be brutally put to death. At the execution, Manon asks for the right to kill her, but she instead swings her sword at her grandmother. The Thirteen flee, and the Matron reveals that Manon is the last Crochan Queen, her father being a Crochan Prince and her mother being an Ironteeth witch, and that her she killed both of them upon discovering the truth. Manon takes a near fatal wound to the stomach, and then drops off the cliff and is caught by Abraxos. She manages to kill the witches that chase her, and then passes out and wakes up in Oakwald Forest. She is attacked by a shapeshifter turned monster by Erawan, calling itself a Bloodhound, and she escapes again and tells Abraxos to take her somewhere safe.
Aelin, Aedion, and Lysandra arrive in Ilium to find it occupied by Adarlanian soldiers, the temple there being used as their barracks. She makes a dramatic appearance, giving some of the soldiers the chance to flee, and then the three of them kill the rest. They go to the temple and Aelin meets with King Brannon's ghost. He tells her to go to the Stone Marshes of Eyllwe to find a Lock that can bind the Wyrdkeys back to the Wyrdgate. The trio are then attacked by Erawan, possessing the body of the Chief Overseer of Endovier that tortured Aelin. She manages to kill him, but not after being taunted by Erawan. They then sail for Skull's Bay.
Dorian and Rowan arrive in Skull's Bay two weeks before the rest of their companions. Upon arriving, they go to meet with Rolfe, who insists upon staying neutral, but also find Gavriel and Fenrys in his company. They say that they were sent by Maeve to hunt and kill Lorcan. Rowan bargains that he will tell them where Lorcan is so long as they help them until then. They hesitate but Rowan tells Gavriel that he has a son, and so they agree. Rowan begins to train Dorian in magic. After two weeks, they go again to meet with Rolfe, and find Aelin, once again acting as Celaena, in his office. She then reveals that she is Aelin, and tries to bargain with Rolfe to get him on her side. He is angry and refuses. After some scheming, Aelin comes up with a plan and sends out a ripple of power that the Valg in the Dead Islands detect. They come with ships and sea-wyverns to attack Skull's Bay. Aelin offers her and her courts' help in exchange for Rolfe's allegiance and him gathering the remaining Mycenians to fight for her. She also says she will make him a lord of Terrasen and give his people back Ilium. He reluctantly agrees. Lysandra turns into a sea dragon and fulfills the Mycenian prophecy that once a sea dragon returns again, so shall the Mycenians. Aelin and Rowan combine their powers to wipe out the Valg ships, but Aelin wears the Wyrdkey, and is possessed by Deanna. Deanna gives them a riddle and tries to destroy Skull's Bay with her silver fire, but Rowan jumps in front of Aelin and she redirects her blow to the ships. She still ends up taking out most of Rolfe's ship, some of his men, and the entire Valg fleet save three boats. Lysandra takes out the two sea-wyverns, but is attacked by three more fully grown ones. She barely is able to kill them, with the help of Dorian and Aedion, and also sinks the remaining three ships. Aedion promises a wounded Lysandra that he is going to marry her one day. After the battle, Aelin then summons Elena, who tells her again that she needs to find the Lock.
Lorcan and Elide continue traveling together, but are attacked again by the ilken. At the next town over, their traveling companions sell them out to the Adarlanian guards, and they are forced to take a boat and flee. Lorcan discovers that Aelin has tricked him and he didn't actually have Wyrdkey this whole time, and he tells Elide that he will be bringing her to Aelin after all, and reveals that Aelin and Celaena are the same person. After a long ways of travel, they stop in another town, and Lorcan leaves Elide alone to buy clothes. Elide is attacked by ilken and her uncle Vernon, and they attempt to take her back to Morath. Thinking that Manon is dead and Lorcan has abandoned her, she attempts to kill herself, but Lorcan knocks her knife out of her hand and attacks. She and Lorcan kill the ilken, but her uncle Vernon escapes. Elide finally reveals what she is carrying with her, and Lorcan explains about the Wyrdkeys. They continue to head south to Eyllwe.
Aelin and her court travel on boats to the Stone Marshes to find the Lock. On the way, they see the coast of Eyllwe burning, and the townspeople blame Aelin for it. Abraxos finds their boat and they fetch an unconscious Manon out of the ocean and begin healing her wound. Once she is conscious, Dorian and Manon grow closer, and Aelin attacks Manon for leaving Elide alone in Oakwald Forest. Aelin makes a connection between something Fenrys said and Baba Yellowlegs' prophecy, and throws up. Rowan wants to know what's wrong but she only talks to Lysandra about it. Dorian advocates for Manon's freedom on the ship, and when they go to release her, they are attacked by a Bloodhound pretending to be Fenrys. She tells Manon that Asterin and her Thirteen are dead, and then Dorian kills her. The ship is attacked by ilken, and they fight them off, Manon assisting. They worry as Erawan now knows their location. They eventually make it to the Stone Marshes. Manon sends Abraxos to lie low and the court makes its way into the marshes. After three days of travel, they find the temple containing a chest that supposedly holds the Lock. Just then they begin to feel a magical warning signal from Lorcan, who, along with Elide, has noticed an army of 500 flying ilken heading straight towards them. They set up a trap, but Aelin obliterates them with her flame, and the others pick off the rest. When Lorcan comes into sight, Fenrys and Gavriel immediately attack him. Elide jumps in front of Lorcan, causing Fenrys to accidentally wound her arm. Gavriel heals her, and then Rowan declares that Lorcan and Elide are under their royal protection, which delays the blood oath command for them to kill him. Elide has a tearful reunion with Aedion, Aelin, and Manon, and she offers Aelin the second Wyrdkey. They then go back to the temple to open the chest, and find not a Lock but a witch mirror. They carry it back through the Marshes to the beach, and encounter a hooded woman with soldiers at her back. Everyone goes on alert, and Lorcan sends out a pulse of power to signal Maeve to come so that way Elide will be saved if there is trouble. Aelin goes down to talk with the stranger, who reveals herself to be Ansel of Briarcliff, Queen of the Western Wastes, Aelin's old friend turned enemy from when she trained with the Silent Assassins of the Red Desert. Ansel owed Aelin a life debt, and she gathered her forces and conquered Melisande, taking it away from Erawan's control, all for Aelin. They ready to leave for Terrasen, but are cornered by Maeve's armada.
They give them a day to decide whether to surrender or fight. That night, Rowan flies to all of the ships in Maeve's armada bearing the Whitethorn crest and begs them to switch sides. A few hours before the dawn of the day of the battle, Dorian solves Deanna's riddle and the mystery of the witch mirror. Aelin and Manon join hands and step into the mirror. Aedion is enraged at Dorian for suggesting such a thing, and Rowan is left to command the fleet against Maeve.
Inside the mirror, Manon and Aelin are shown what really happened when Elena and Gavin fought Erawan all those years ago. Elena stole the Eye of Elena, the true Lock, from her father Brannon and used it to seal Erawan in a tomb. The gods then appear before her, angry at her for using the Lock. Brannon had made a deal with them to use the Lock to send the gods back to their home world, and they would take Erawan with them. But by wasting all of the Lock's power on Erawan's tomb, Elena ruined their chance and doomed her own bloodline. The gods tell her that her bloodline will pay the price she couldn't and ultimately one would have to give their own life to reforge the Lock and seal away the keys, sending the gods and the Valg out of the world. She agrees, and agrees to set clues and hints for that future descendant to help lead them into doing it. They are then shown Nehemia coming to the Stone Marshes, thinking the prophecies and clues were for her. Elena appears before her and tells her that it must either be Dorian or Aelin that does it, and that Nehemia must help by going to Rifthold and preparing one or both of them, but that she will forfeit her own life in doing so. Nehemia agrees. Aelin is enraged at Elena even though she had already figured out that she would have to die to reseal the Wyrdkeys. Elena shows her what really happened the night her parents were killed and she fell in the river. She almost drowned but was pulled out by Elena put in a physical form by the gods. Aelin died from the cold but Elena revived her, and the gods told Elena to take Aelin then, as a child, to reforge the Lock. But Elena wanted Aelin to at least have a chance to live her life before she died and instead compelled Arobynn Hamel to come and find her. The gods were angry with her for this and as her punishment Elena cannot enter the afterlife and she will simply cease to exist the moment the keys are put back.
The battle between the courts' forces and Maeve's wages on. Lysandra is able to take out some boats in sea dragon form, but against Fae warriors they are ultimately losing. But then the Whitethorn ships turn on Maeve's armada and begin assisting them. Abraxos flies back with the Thirteen, ultimately turning the tide of the battle and causing the remaining force to flee.
Manon and Aelin are sucked out of the mirror and teleported to the beach where Elide had been sent by Lorcan for safety. Her guards are all dead, and Maeve has her held prisoner. She cuts Gavriel off from the blood oath, and reveals Lorcan's betrayal, as well as how Aelin walked perfectly into her years long schemes. She also reveals that Rowan is her mate, and that she used her magic to trick him into thinking Lyria was his mate, and then had her killed in order to get him to take the blood oath. She then demands that Aelin surrender or Elide will be tortured. Aelin surrenders, and Cairn whips her brutally. They seal her into an iron box and sail away, right before Rowan, Aedion, Dorian, Lysandra, and the Thirteen arrive. Elide and Manon reveal everything to Rowan and the others, and Rowan reveals that they had a secret marriage, making him the King of Terrasen. Lysandra then reveals that she and Aelin already made a plan for her disappearance/death in which Lysandra would pretend to be Aelin for the rest of her life and Aedion would father her children so Terrasen would have heirs. Lorcan is immensely remorseful, and Elide and Aedion are enraged. Just then Ansel and Rowan's cousin Enda arrive, along with Galan Ashryver, Prince of Wendlyn, and all of his naval forces, and the Silent Assassins of the Red Desert. They realize that Aelin called in every life debt owed to her to raise an army, and Lysandra shifts to become her to maintain the ruse that she is still leading her own forces. Dorian leaves with Manon, Elide, and the Thirteen to find the Crochans, and Rowan, Lorcan, and Gavriel head off to begin the hunt for Aelin.
Aelin Ashryver Galathynius (Celaena Sardothien/Aelin of the Wildfire/Fireheart): Aelin has shown a lot of growth in this series, but we still get to see her mistakes. Even though she is learning to trust her court and delegate more, she still takes on a lot of secrets and schemes on her own, which leads to the attack from Maeve in the first place because Lorcan got scared for Elide and summoned her. While she accepts her role as the sacrificial lamb of her bloodline, we still see it scare her, and I'm glad she didn't just stoically accept her death.
Aedion Ashryver (The Wolf of the North): While I am personally not a huge fan of Aedion overall, Aelin and Lysandra's plan to use him to produce heirs was really messed up and he had every right to be angry with them about that. It also doesn't make sense because according to shapeshifter rules (Feyre's pregnancy in A Court of Silver Flames for example) if Lysandra and Rowan made kids while Lysandra was in Aelin's form, the kids would look like a mix of Rowan and Aelin, so Aedion is completely unnecessary. That would have really sucked for Rowan but getting him involved in that way wasn't even needed. The kids wouldn't even look like Lysandra's usual form either because Lysandra's form isn't how she was at birth and she can't go back to her original look because she doesn't remember.
Storyline: I once again loved seeing old characters come back into the fold and watching Aelin's schemes fall into place. Everything feels connected and purposeful and there are reasonable explanations for everything. Nothing is just left up to fate (looking at you House of Flame and Shadow) and things come together either by Maeve, Erawan, Aelin, or the gods' scheming and planning.
Representation: Aedion is bisexual, Rowan's cousin Enda is mentioned as being gay, and Lord Darrow was the former King of Terrasen's consort. Representation for POC is once again lacking. Elide is crippled due to her ankle being deformed from a break that was never healed.
Summary: This is my second favorite book in the Throne of Glass series, right after Queen of Shadow. All of the plot line were entertaining the whole time and everything is intentional and flawlessly comes together.
Quotes: "The world... will be saved and remade by the dreamers..."-Aelin (p.248) "I love you. There is no limit to what I can give to you, no time I need. Even when this world is a forgotten whisper of dust between the stars, I will love you."-Rowan (p.350) "It is not such a hard thing, is it--to die for your friends."-Dorian (p.594)

ToG Read-A-Long, Empire of Storms, day 12
Ch 71
“A small, breathy laugh. "Ah." Aelin's stomach clenched as that ancient focus shifted to Elide. "Claimed by queen, and witch, and ... my Second, it seems."
They’re working out a google calendar to share her. Sorry Maeve, you’re too late to get in on this action. Can you fuck off, please?
When Maeve revealed that Rowaelin are mates, I’m kinda like… well… sure.
They behave like mates, so, I expected them to be mates. But it does kind of diminish a little bit of their unique love story, to me. I did actually kinda like it better that they weren’t mates - and they still loved each other anyway - still loved each other SO MUCH they were willing to do whatever it takes to be together. Ah well. Mates are good too.
It hurts me a little bit to hear that Rowan’s first mate was just… a trick. I’m sure his feelings for her were real, but it’s kind of painful and sad to think that he has been mourning her all this time, and basically gave up on life, because Maeve psychically manipulated him. Do you think Lyria was in on it? Do you think she did it Nehemia-style, like “I’m going to let myself die to push him toward his fate,” or do you think she was just a victim?
I don’t think Maeve could do anything at all to make me hate her more than threaten Elide.
She needs to goooooo. Time to kill her, Manon. C’mon. I know you have it in you. Aelin is drained emotionally and magically, but I know you can destroy this fae queen, so, please.
PLEASE.
Ch 72
What the fuck!
Why is she letting herself be taken captive!
Why isn’t Manon springing into deadly action!
Manon! Please!
Ch 73
Oh ok. Well. I guess that’s… good?
Also it’s so good to have Manon and Elide together again. She’s got the keys, and Elide has the ring. They should hold hands and go break them together. Elide can protect you, Manon! She can finally pay back the favor!
Are they planning on, somehow, rescuing Aelin, or she supposed to get herself out of this?
It kinda seems like it might be hard to get out of…
I mean, I believe in her, and her capabilities, but…
The situation seems pretty dire
What’s the rest of the plan, here?
Ch 74
“she had married Whitethorn so Terrasen could have a king.”
Huh?
When did that happen?
Why wasn’t I invited to the wedding 😡
Wtf is happening! This chapter is so off the rails
WE’RE IN THE DIRT
Aelin wanted Aedion to fuck Lysandra in Aelin’s body - and didn’t explain to him this plan? WHAT
Gross!
That’s incest, girl
What the fuck
And why on earth would Lysandra agree to that when she’s not even sure she wants to be anything more than friends with Aedion….
“Sure, I’ll bear his children while wearing your form” like girl - that’s asking a lot, lol
I’m not surprised he’s freaking out about this
It’s such a completely off the rails plan
What the fuck was she thinking
Um
How about we DON’T do that. How about we rescue Aelin instead, and she can seal Erawan away the same way Elena did and save the ultimate sacrifice chosen one gimmick for another true-born Mala heir 1000 years from now. It’s not the RIGHT thing to do, but making her friend and cousin commit borderline incest just so she can die heroically to save the world is actually pretty despicable
AND ELIDE IS BREAKING UP WITH LORCAN TOO??? what the fuck is this chapter! Why! Elide; girlie, what‘s this about! Maeve was your only romantic contender and she basically took herself out of the love triangle! You are free, now. Like. Isn’t that something to celebrate!
“She had made plans for all of them - and none for herself.
"The quest does not end here," Dorian said softly.”
DORIAN. Don’t you dare. You’re not allowed to die heroically. We fought too hard to save you! THE POWER OF LOVE, DORIAN. This shit is solvable another way! Don’t let Aelin ‘make plans’ on your behalf. You better save her, now. Just like she saved you. Remember? The power of love?
Why is everyone so committed to misery in this moment
Misery does not win
Love wins
So stop it
Everybody stop what you’re doing, and let’s regroup on how to use friendship and love as our strength, okay?
Ch 75
“And he would not accept that he had found her, and she had found him, and they had survived such sorrow and pain and despair together, only to be cleaved apart. He would not accept the fate that had been dealt to her, would not accept that her life was the asking price for saving this world. Her life, or Dorian's.
He would not accept it for one heartbeat.”
Yeah!
Good!
I don’t accept it, either!
Thank you, Rowan, for being the only sensible one
Rowan still believes in the power of love.
Alright I’m actually so braindead after reading this book.
I’m not sure how to feel right now!
Two books left.
That ending was FUCKED up. I hated it, lol.
I mean, I’m glad Elide is not dead, because I love her, but - everything else that went down, I feel like it went down in the worst way imaginable.
(ALSO /RANT BUT - What is it with SJM and off-screen weddings! Ma’am that shit is unforgivable. 700 pages, you can’t devote a few of them to a fluffy, sweet, soft wedding sequence? )
(Who let her get away with this!)
(I feel like I can't even be upset about it because of the situation Aelin is in rn but!)
(SJM - how could you!)

A Little Braver - 72
So, as promised here we are with ch. 72 The first part is still quite angsty but then I swear it gets better and I promise the angst is officially over. I have nothing but fluff planned until ch 75 and then the epilogue. This was the last bit of drama.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/3c37a02de016f6291850dd30cf15ebec/867dce18a1a387e8-bd/s540x810/b03ec9dded970bd6b48b1ebec71020555c4af7ad.jpg)
A savage scream left Rowan’s lungs.
He was about to bolt for the building but Fenrys who probably had an inkling what he wanted to do blocked him.
“Rowan, you cannot go inside.”
He trashed in Fen’s arms as he kept screaming Aelin’s name and shaking his head. She could not die like that, could not leave him. Rowan tried to get free once more but Fenrys kept shouting at him to stop.
“Let me go,” he shouted once more he looked up at the inferno with blurry vision from the tears now flowing in full force “She can’t leave me…”
Fenrys thanked his firefighter training that allowed him to keep Rowan still. The last thing he needed was for him to rush inside and get himself killed “Ro, please. You cannot go inside.”
“She can’t leave me,” he kept screaming and fighting his friend until he had no strength left and finally collapsed on his knees, exhausted. Resigned. Heartbroken.
Elide took over and crouched at Rowan’s side while Fenrys stood and ran to Dorian “Chief, I need to go in. I have to do this.”
Dorian nodded and Fenrys ran to the truck to grab a new SCBA then disappeared into the building.
“They will find her.” Elide brushed Rowan’s hair in a tender gesture and the man seemed to give up the fight.
Rowan breathed in hard and stood his mask back on “I need to help,” his voice cold and love and utterly detached.
“I don’t think—”
But Rowan stopped her “Please. I need to keep busy and help so that I don’t go insane.”
He took a patient and kept listening to the radio as was Dorian, directing the rescue. More people kept coming out being escorted by firefighters. It seemed that they had found more people alive and that was a miracle considering the size of the fire. The last explosion had been brutal but the fire was finally showing signs of dying down.
The time had seemed to slow down and Rowan listened eagerly to the radio but the men inside were silent, probably concentrating on the rescue.
“Chief we can hear her PASS alarm.” It had been Fenrys voice to break the silence.
Rowan’s head turned again to the building. The alarm was not a guarantee she was alive but they had found her at least. For a brief moment he allowed himself to hope. For an instant the wrenching pain in his soul abated and he felt like breathing once more.
“Please be alive, fireheart. Please come back to me,” he said a bit too out loud while he medicated the man in front of him.
“Do you know anyone in the building?”
“My girlfriend is a firefighter. They lost her but they got her now but I don’t know yet if she is alive.”
The man nodded “these people deserve a friggin medal after this. They are heroes to willingly go inside such an inferno.”
He kept chatting with the man while he checked on him and that helped distract him.
Until Elide screamed.
His head whipped towards the sound and saw Fenrys carrying Aelin in his arms and Brullo at his side. Elide ran but he stood still. He could not stare at the limp body in his friend’s arms. In those few second he started praying to all of the ancient gods he barely believed in and in Mala. He asked Mala to keep Aelin safe.
Once his victim was patched up the man stood “I hope they find her.” he joined the other victims at the side of the road. Rowan then took a step, and then another towards the gurney where Elide was assessing Aelin.
“Rowan, her breathing is shallow and her GCS 5. Intubate her while I do other checks.”
His body reacted on instinct and training made him forget that it was Aelin he was dealing with. All the emotional detachment that the airforce had instilled in him came back in full force and it was all it was keeping him sane.
“You stay with me okay? You come back to me. You are just sleeping. I am here, fireheart. Do not leave me because there’s no way without you.” He heard himself whispering to her.
“That’s her bagged.” He had completed the action on muscle memory. He would admit later on that he had no recollection of treating her.
“Good. Block her leg with a temporary sling. I think it’s broken.” She pressed her hands on her abdomen “she might have internal bleeding.”
Rowan nodded to the cut on her head.
“Her pupils are reactive, she reacted to pain.”
Elide pulled back and lifted the bars at the side “come on, let’s take her to the hospital.”
Elide told Dorian they were the ones taking Aelin to Med and the man did not object.
Rowan went to get to the driver’s seat but Elide stopped him “I am driving today.”
“It’s better.”
Elide was the paramedic in charge but had allowed Rowan to drive using the reasoning that she knew what a careful driver he was and trusted him. She also knew he was better than her in the harsh winter conditions. But on that day he was not in the right state of mind.
They arrived at the hospital ten minutes later and unloaded Aelin and saw the nightmare that was the hospital. Sorscha spotted them and gasped at seeing Aelin on the stretcher.
“GCS 5, shallow breathing, possible internal injury, head injury and a broken leg.” Elide did the unload. Rowan just stared at his girlfriend being carried away by doctors.
Elide pulled Rowan aside “Stay here. I am going back to help a little more. The worst is passed but there are still people needing help. I can ask Ansel to help.”
“I shouldn’t.”
“Rowan, I want you here, and east too.” she placed her hands on his shoulders “Your head will not be on the job. Stay with her, please.”
Elide ran out and Rowan sat down and stared at the door through which they had taken her. His head hung heavily against the wall and with his hand he brushed the tattoo with their names. His eyes fell on his polo shirt and noticed the blood staining it. Some of it was Aelin’s. He lifted his hands and saw them shaking. With rage he pulled off the gloves and buried his face in his hands. This was not happening. They had just celebrated two years together. The best two years of his miserable life.
They had been two hard years, with a lot of ups and downs and all of the problems that couple usually face. They had even survived his battle with ptsd when he felt everyday that he was not worth being loved by her. Life had tried its best to try and separate them but they had fought back. Because of something he was now positive. They belonged together. Aelin was his soulmate and the pain he was feeling now was the proof. His soul was breaking at the possibility of loosing it’s other half.
From his back pocket he pulled out the copy of her badge and held it in his shaky palm.
“Fight for us one last time, please.”
He looked around and saw an A&E flooded with all the victims from the fire. There were so many and that’s all thanks to the five station. He was aware that they had lost people but given the inferno it was a miracle the death toll hadn’t been higher. The man he treated had been right. They all deserved a medal, a red carpet, the fucking glory. And he knew that none of the firefighters would love being called a hero. They all did it because it was their duty, their job. He had spent enough time with them to know it. He would gladly go to all the newspapers and talk about the incredible job they did.
His eyes wandered around the A&E and recognised some of the patients he treated. He stood and walked to them to ask for an update, until he remembered they had brought Manon in. Slowly he limped to the nurses station. His knee was getting worse.
Sorscha was free so he went to her “Hey, do you have news on Manon?”
The woman typed something on her computer “She is in treatment 4.”
“How is she?”
“Awake. Her sats were rock bottom but as soon as we started her heavily on oxygen they climb up and she woke up.”
Rowan nodded but before he turned he looked at the woman “Dorian had a really bad day. I think we all did. Look after him.”
He made his way to treatment 4 and saw Manon in bed with an oxygen mask on her face. He knocked on the doorframe and as she spotted him the woman sat up “Rowan…” she was about to remove her mask to speak but he stopped her “Your sats were in the toilet, keep it on.” He sat on the chair at her side “The fire is finally dying down. The guys have been making good progress but the beast took out two floors…” he paused “Aelin…” he pushed back the tears threatening to spill “Aelin is in surgery.”
“What happened?”
He told her everything and for some reason it made him feel better.
He and Manon kept chatting until an hour later east team poured in to see the woman. Rowan stepped outside and saw Aedion talking with Sorscha. He walked to the man with a visible limp.
“Rowan…”
“Any news…”
Aedion shook his head and forced him to sit down “Still in surgery.”
Rowan leaned back heavily on the chair “she has to pull through…”
“I haven’t told Lys yet. I can’t until I know Aelin is fine.”
“You might become a father a bit too early,” Rowan had found the strength to make a joke. He was just trying to ignore the time passing.
Some of the victims in the A&E recognised them as they exited Manon’s room and those who could, started walking toward them to thank them.
East team gathered around Rowan “some regional teams are finishing up and gave us some relief. Dorian will be here soon,” Brullo had sat at his side “any updates?”
Rowan just shook his head in silence and his gaze returned to the big doors leading to the restricted area.
He heard the team chatting away around him but Rowan felt empty and his mind was focused only on Aelin. The single thought in his head in those moments. And in that instant he took his decision. He was not going to waste any more time. As soon as Aelin was better he was going to ask her to marry him. There was no point in waiting and he wanted that. He had wanted to marry her for a very long time, but his fears held him back, but now that his worst fear threatened them once more it was all he needed.
He was deep in his thoughts when a doctor walked towards the group two hours later.
Aedion stood, Rowan did the same but as he put weight in his leg, sharp pain spread through the limb and he had to lean on the chair.
“You okay?” Aedion grabbed him and helped him stand.
“How’s Aelin?” He ignored the pain in his leg.
The doctor moved aside for some privacy “she is out of surgery. She had some internal bleeding but we stopped it. Her lower body suffered multiple fractures, from the collapse I assume. Luckily they were all closed, and she just has a cast on both legs and recovery should be fine,” the doctor paused “however, the TBI caused a small bleeding in her brain. We caught it in time and the surgeon was able to stop it before it got worse. Such injuries might cause issues but we will not know until she wakes up.”
“Her lungs…” asked Rowan “in an accident a while ago she had breathed in a lot of smoke and had breathing problems for a while.”
“Her mask was cracked when they found her,” added Aedion with the same worry.
“Her sats were dangerously low so she is intubated and we are oxygenating the lungs to avoid ARDS to develop. Given her situation we have her in the ICU for now.”
“She will wake up, won’t she?” The fear in Rowan was deep.
The doctor nodded “the neurosurgeon is confident about it. We are just erring on the side of caution. She is heavily sedated to allow her body to heal without stress.”
Rowan nodded.
“Do you want to see her?”
Both men nodded with enthusiasm but as Rowan moved another step he winced.
“You should have that leg looked at.”
“My stick is in the ambulance.”
Aedion allowed him to sit down once more and went to grab Elide to get Rowan’s stick.
He came back running a few minutes later and Rowan accepted his stick happily.
The doctor started walking to the lifts and then she turned to Aedion “we are going to the eight floor,” and grinned.
Aedion disappeared and Rowan happily trotted behind the doctor “You knew about the lift.”
“We have firefighters around a lot.”
The closer they got to the room the more panic rose in Rowan. The doctor’s word kept ringing in his ears. As long as she was alive they would face anything together.
Once on the floor they saw Aedion waiting for them near the nurses’ station. His face covered in dirt but his piercing blue eyes staring at him with confidence.
“She’s down here.”
The doctor walked them to the room and Rowan stepped aside “you first.”
Aedion hesitated.
“You are family.”
“You are her family too, Rowan.”
He knew but he needed time. He was beyond terrified.
At Rowan’s pained expression Aedion nodded and went into the room and Rowan sat on a chair and closed his eyes.
The darkness was broken by images of their good times together, her bright smile and her happiness. He heard himself sob. The possibility that Aelin might be taken from him was destroying him. He pulled out her badge once more and held it in his hands I don’t want to see your badge on that wall. A silent prayer to Mala, her favourite ancient goddess.
A tap on his shoulder ripped him from his dark thoughts and when he opened his eyes he noticed Aedion.
“Go, I will update her team. She needs you now.”
Rowan grabbed the stick and pulled himself up but almost stumbled when atrocious pain spread through his leg but Aedion caught him.
Rowan groaned. The pain had been bad all day, far too busy saving lives to even care. But as the hours passed the pain had intensified and he just ignored it.
“You should have that leg looked at.”
“No,” he added shaking his head “after I see Aelin.”
“I will be downstairs. Dorian might ask for a shift change over earlier on given what we faced. I will be back.”
Rowan nodded and stared at the cousin disappear down the stairs.
He tried to stand again and used the wall for extra support.
Finally he mustered all of his courage and entered the room.
The light was not as bright and the silence was only broken by the constant beeping of the machines. His eyes finally landed on her. His fireheart looked so fragile and broken in that hospital bed with tubes attached to her and the machines crowded around her.
Someone must have cleaned her face, now free of all soot. Her head was enveloped in a thick bandage where he knew she had surgery. The hands were heavily bandaged too. He had noticed the cuts and his gut clenched at the image of her trying to claw her way out of the debris. The lower part of her body was hiding under the blankets but from the bulky form he knew both legs were in casts.
With a trembling hand he brushed her forehead and then leaned over for a kiss “I am here, fireheart.” Rowan finally sat down and oh so gently he grabbed her bandaged hand and brought it to his mouth for a kiss “I was so scared, I am still…” he added while his head bent forward on her shoulder “I thought you left me. If you had died…” he sobbed, lifted his head and cleared his tears with the back of his hand “if you had died I would have been a lost man.” Another kiss “I will marry you. Just get better and I will ask you to be my wife. I am done waiting.” He brushed her head once more “I love you,” tears came back with force “I love you so damn much.”
After that he felt spent so he just leaned back on the chair never releasing her hand.
Eventually he fell asleep.
It was three hours later when a soft tap on his shoulder woke him up. He opened his eyes and realised he had fallen asleep with his head near Aelin’s hand.
Rowan turned his head and spotted Aedion.
“Sorry.”
“Come, Dorian got our second teams to relieve us. We are going home.”
“No…” he said almost in a panic. He was not leaving her.
“Rowan, we are going home, you take a shower, get changed and then I will take you back. I need to tell Lys and you need to rest a bit.”
Eventually he nodded and let the man help him. He realised he must looked like a wreck when Aedion offered to ride the lift with him.
*
Four days later Rowan went back to the hospital after his shift and Aelin’s doctor met him with a grin on his face “come.”
He dragged him into the room and he gasped at the scene. Aelin was awake. The doctor peeled away and he just stood on the door.
He noticed her head slowly turn to him and Aelin gave the smile he adored. The one that could dispel all the clouds and the darkness.
Almost in a daze he walked to her, his hand extended and the next instant he was kissing her like a desperate man, tears falling freely down his face.
He pulled back and green eyes met blue “hi you…”
A weak smile broke on her face. She still looked pale and the heavy bandage in her head did nothing to dispel that image.
She was not intubated anymore and only had nasal cannulas to help breath a bit better. That was a great success. And she was awake. He had to find a moment to speak with the doctor.
So many thoughts started flooding in his mind at the excitement of having her awake that he had no idea what to do or say next, so he just sat down on the chair that had become his best friend.
“Don’t…” he whispered, while grabbing her hand “don’t ever tell me goodbye again over the radio.”
Aelin’s head went deeper on the pillow “I thought I was a goner. I was pinned and the fire all around me…” she looked away for a second and Rowan worried, his mind going back to what she went through after the airport accident.
“Then I heard Fen and Brullo… and I knew I would be fine, that I’d see you again.”
Rowan leaned forward and kissed her forehead “Now it’s my turn to be your nurse.”
Aelin chuckled and coughed as well and Rowan’s fussiness kicked in “I need to go and speak with the doctor, will you be okay for five minutes?”
Aelin nodded “I love you.”
Rowan left the room and found Aelin’s doctor.
“She is awake, that is a good sign, right?”
The man nodded “she went for an MRI this morning and there is no sign of other bleeding. The neurosurgeon examined her and is happy with her response. We will keep her in the hospital a bit longer but we are ready to move her out of the ICU.”
Rowan breathed deeply, that was the best news.
Quickly he went back to the room and saw her with her eyes closed but as he stepped in Aelin looked at him “so?”
Rowan sat on the edge of the bed and shook his head “Doc said you can’t function without me.”Aelin lifted her hand and caressed his cheek “I can’t…” she whispered “I don’t want to.”
He grabbed the hand in his and kissed it “get better… then we can talk about it.”
Aelin smiled back “how’s the others?”
“Dorian appointed Manon as acting captain, Marcus and Borte are off and pretty banged up” he then grinned “you all got a commendation from the mayor. He visited the five houses and you might expect a visit here in the hospital too.” Rowan’s grin was wider “He promised to try and find budget to open at least two more houses, help the police and also fund hospitals,” he passed her a newspaper from the day after the accident “he claimed that events like these albeit rare, showed just how understaffed the emergency services are and that a tragedy was avoided only because of the amazing people who worked hard for hours on end.”
Aelin read the newspaper “this guy is good…” her voice still hoarse.
“He is ex PD and worked a lot with firefighters and hospitals. He knows what he is talking about, which is what we needed.”
“And how’s my sexy paramedic?” Aelin’s hand brushed his polo shirt.
“Your two favourite Rowan miss you very much at home,” a huge grin “we are almost packed and the guys will help me next time we are off to move everything. I have Lorcan and the boys too. We hired a van.”
“Our house…”
Rowan kissed her “let me deal with it. You work on getting better. Also,” he took out his phone and showed her an email “the sale of your place went through to the family you liked.”
The smile she gave him was a bright one “they are very happy.”
Rowan then sat near her head and pulled her closer gently and started showing some pictures of their old house and Aelin laughed when she saw the ones with bird Rowan on top of boxes “he was directing the operations.”
Aelin’s laughter was the best sound in the universe.
*
Later on that afternoon her room had been a constant stream of visitors. West, north, south and central had all gone to see her, with great desperation from the nurses who saw their ward invaded by a constant stream of firefighters. But since she was not in the ICU anymore she was finally allowed visitors on top of Rowan and Aedion.
Her team had joined soon after and Brullo was the first one who enveloped her in a crushing hug telling her not to give him another scare like that. Dorian had arrived soon after and the man as well hugged her fiercely and then gave her an update on the fire. They had discovered that there had been a massive electrical problem just above the panels of the ceiling. The fire had spread very quickly finding very easily flammable materials.
The mayor had kept his promise and visited her as well. No one told her in advance and Aelin had no way of preparing herself. The man was such a difference from the previous one. He had sat with her alone, his entourage all waiting outside and he had listened to her story and what she had done on that day. It was easy to chat with him and without knowing it she had spilled her idea of the project she had been pondering for a while. She wanted to create an outreach program for girls, especially in high school age, to try and show them that gender was not a barrier, that they could achieve anything if they really wanted. She had even thought of a name Rattle the stars. The mayor had loved the idea and promised to have his PR team to get in touch with her and also he’d try and allocate a small budget at the next review in a month.
She had talked about her project with Rowan too and he promised his support. He had also confessed that the first two women had finally graduated from fighter pilot school but were encountering a lot of resistance in the ranks. Aelin had been furious.
She finally had a few minutes for herself after the stream of visitors when a figure appeared on the threshold.
“Lys…” Aelin pushed the button of the bed to pull her up. Her friend waddled to her and they exchanged a very awkward hug with Lys bump in the way.
“Hi fatso.”
Lysandra sat on the bed and patted her bump “I am officially a whale.”
“You look amazing.”
“You look better too,” added her friend in a sad tone.
“I look like a mummy with all these bandages.”
Lysandra sobbed “do not ever do that to us… never again.”
“I was not a fan either.”
“Elide was ready to kill you when she heard your radio message and Rowan…” her friend paused. Fenrys had told her he had to restrain his friend who was ready to jump into the building “he hasn’t left your side. Elide told me he’d ran here after shift and once home apparently he had been packing for the move.”
“I know.” Aelin wanted to change subject. She knew all about Rowan and how desperate he had been and it hurt like hell what she had put him through. Aelin had even joked to him that now they were even after his plane crash. His only answer had been an angry glare.
“So, how’s the academy. Terrified any students?”
“I am a fantastic instructor…” a pause “and I love it. Yes, I miss you all like crazy but I realised that I enjoy teaching just as much.”
“And how’s peanut?”
Lysandra patted her bum “well, it’s now more like a watermelon, and if it wasn’t that I saw the scan myself I’d say that your cousin spawned twins.”
Aelin patted the belly “how far along now?”
“I just celebrated week 26. Still a lifetime away.”
“I am so looking forward to be auntie Aelin and spoil that boy rotten.”
Lysandra grinned “you do that and then I will reciprocate once you and Rowan finally decide to reproduce.”
Aelin paused and looked at her friend in her eyes “I am ready. I want to marry him and I have a feeling he is ready too.”
“Aelin,” Lys’ hand went on her leg “Rowan has been ready for a very long time.”
She knew. She had been the only one still unsure. No matter how much she loved him there was still a block. But now that was gone. He was her soulmate. Her rock. Her friend. The man who had taken her hand and walked the dark path with her back to light. Back to a happy future together.
The two women talked all afternoon until Lysandra admitted that she was looking forward to be stranded on her sofa.
Rowan appeared an hour later. A pair of jeans and a green polo shirt. His hair tied in a man bun and sunglasses propped on his head. Gods, even after two years together he would still make her heart race like the beginning. She wished she was not stuck in an hospital bed. He was carrying a duffel bag and imagined it was her change of clothes and some more entertainment. She had given him a list of books she wanted and Rowan had promised he’d have a trip to the bookstore.
“You are not allowed to look this hot. Nurses might want to steal you away from me.”
Rowan gave her a throaty laugh and kissed her “I bring presents and a visitor.”
Aelin looked at him puzzled while he opened the duffel bag and burst out laughing when she spotted bird Rowan “he missed you.”
Aelin took the toy and hugged it “miss you too, buddy.”
“How are you feeling?”
Aelin groaned “the food sucks and the nurses refuse to sneak in a burger from the cafeteria.”
Rowan laughed “give me half an hour.” A quick kiss and he disappeared away.
“Do you think he went to get us good food?” She asked the toy while inhaling Rowan’s scent of pine and snow. Gods she missed him.
As promised her boyfriend appeared half an hour later carrying a paper bag she recognised straight away. It was from Emrys.
Rowan pushed the sliding tray in front of her and helped her sit up properly and started to unpack the bag “Emrys threw in a slice of chocolate cake.”
Aelin grabbed her burger and tucked in with ravenous hunger. Rowan laughed. She must have been starving. Hospital food was definitely not what she was used to.
“You are a lifesaver.”
Rowan sat on his chair while tackling his vegetarian burger “The guys and I finally moved everything to the new house.”
Aelin stopped eating “we were meant to do that together.”
At the sadness in her voice he took her hand “we will unpack together. I just unboxed the kitchen stuff and my own things. We will do the library and the living room when you are back, we are decorating together.”
“Of course you unpacked the kitchen stuff.”
Rowan chuckled “I have an amazing kitchen now and I can finally organise it like I want.”
“Freak.”
“Hey, I am your freak.”
Aelin’s hand ran through his hair in a gentle motion “you definitely are my wonderful freak.”
She leaned forward and kissed his nose. She felt happy like never in her life. They had a house now. Another step in their relationship. Another step in the journey they embarked two years before on the bench of their favourite park.

Hey! Happy WBW Morri!!
Upon stalking your WIP pages, I came across a lovely little guy....
✨Squish✨
It says he's a little magic slug? [Adorable 😭]. Can you tell me more about him, and how he's relevant to the world? to the magic? And to your characters? If he's magical, what can he do? O:
@bloodlessheirbyjacques :3
Hi Jacques! Thanks for the ask!
So, I talked a bit about Squish before in the past, and you can find that under her tag HERE. I'll try to fill in the gaps, though.
So, she is not, in and of herself, vitally relevant to the plot or magic of the world. In fact, not a single person that Dorian or Ash interacts with has any idea what she is.
The two of them rescued her from potential death, but it was very much a spur-of-the-moment thing and motivated by Dorian's love of animals and not wanting to see them suffer than actually knowing what she was or wanting her for any purpose. In fact, they were originally planning on just releasing her into the wild after they escaped, but then she latched on to Ash and won't fucking leave, so welp, we have a slug now, I guess.
In the world of CoS, there aren't any magical creatures that are just out and about, so Squish's existence is kind of mysterious. In fact, Dorian and Ashlin can only speculate that she even has any magic at all! She might very well just be a large, intelligent, color changing slug!
But Squish is very relevant to the characters in that they take care of her and become very attached to her. At first Ash is very annoyed by the fact that Squish bonded to them, and tries to leave her behind more than once. However, that quickly proves impossible, at least without causing themselves to be discovered, so Ash accepts her role as the Protector of the Slug. (Dorian finds the whole situation hilarious, btw.)
Dorian is fascinated by Squish from the start, and takes notes about her, trying to learn as much as he can. How smart is she? What do the color changes mean? Can she understand us? etc. He spoils her a lot, and she loves him, even though she still is more attached to Ashlin.
Eventually, Ash just accepts her fate and starts to actually like Squish. In book 2, Squish actually (kind of) saves Ashlin's life.
But yeah, basically, Dorian and Ashlin have no idea wtf Squish is, or if she even has magic. They assume she does, or at least that her body has magical properties, because of where and how they found her, but they don't actually have any proof. I'm still debating if I want to give her any actual powers, and if I do, what I want them to be.
(It would be kind of fun for her to have some little power that I show all throughout the book, but you never realize what it is or that it's Squish doing it until later. But I have no idea what that would be or how to make it fit in.)

early thoughts on exu:
damn aabria goes balls to the wall with dumping potential plot threads in front of her players and i am here for it.
i'm usually a theorizing/predicting kinda person but here? there's no way to predict this group, they will literally never take a single logical or easy action and they all pretty much failed any attempt at rolling plot relevant lore.
i'm just vibing for once and it's weird but good? okay, maybe a little theorizing but it's like....whatever, this is fun.
matt sounds like a cross between henry crabgrass and yeza brenatto and i love it. running with @primrose-path-of-dalliance idea that dariax's divine connection is with corellon the archeart. dude is chaos incarnate, corellon is CG, and corellon's connection with the fey and such would handily explain aabria's turquoise and pink die choice for dariax. it would also be the very subtle inter-campaign link matt prefers (being that caleb was rescued by a cleric of the archeart). also, thank you matt for breaking the unofficial cr moratorium on sorcerers.
aimee has flung herself into the chaos and gracious her vibes with dorian and dariax are fun. i think opal is using a fake name and still calling that she works for the raven queen. her pink daggers are a choice and i am here for them. i was super surprised when we narrowed opal down to human; after the twin and hometown reveal i was 80% sure she was a half-elf. i still think there is precisely a 3% chance she is a changeling in disguise or kalashtar. don't ask me why, i don't know.
what are you hiding, orym? no seriously, what are you hiding? there's something just a tad off about him that i am super curious about. also, good on aabria for handing a lot of the big lore backstory to the guy with the highest int and the player who will never reveal it in game through anything except his body language. power move there.
fearne is just the best. at first i thought she and orym had come into town together from like the fire and air ashari but nope. i love the mass of contradictions around this faun. truly a creature of the feywild. her rapid flip flopping from semi responsible wine aunt vibes to chaos cousin is hysterical and i love her relationship with orym and opal as a consequence.
dorian is also hiding his real name, i think. not just his last name but his first. he's probably air genasi with that art. super interested in whether he comes from a family of air genasi or if he's the first. either way, i think he will shape up to be the party's leader and i can't wait. like everyone else, i'm loving his attempts at the braincell whenever he's talking to dariax. he fails so hard but it's nice orym has an itty bitty bit of backup every now and again.
#critical role#cr spoilers#exandria unlimited#these dumbass kids#are going to be lucky if all they lose is a limb#great group great chemistry#but god the lack of braincells#i am here for it

MLM!Cullen Fic Rec List
Inspired by this post. Here is my fic rec list of some of my favorite fics with queer Cullen. Happy Pride :) 🏳️🌈 🏳️🌈 🏳️🌈
Cullen/Dorian
Only True in Fairy Tales by Dragonflies_and_Katydids
Summary: In which Dorian is a special forces operative, Bull is his partner, and Cullen is the guy they're sent to rescue. Hijinks ensue. // Words: 110150
Modern AU. Dragonflies_and_Katydids makes me read the weirdest stuff. But their work is always captivating. The more ridiculous set up the better outcome, I promise. This one is both ridiculous and absolutely perfect. And somehow one of the very few modern au fics in which Cullen's lyrium addiction is well transfered without making it literal.
Fashionably Late by tsurai
For the tumblr prompt: Cullen/Dorian Soulmates AU? <3 "Maker’s breath, this is absolutely the worst timing, he thinks distantly." // Words: 1038
This is but a tiny thing but I'm a sucker for a soulmate AU. Would I love it more if it was 150,000 words? Yes. But I'm just greedy.
COLD HANDS, WARM HEART by spicyshimmy, stonelions
Summary: Cullen and Dorian's friendship deepens. Cullen is a romantic. Dorian is literally cold. Cullen is no longer certain what he would consider surprising. Mages and Templars working in perfect cooperation, perhaps. Evil and corruption disappearing into the ground along with the blight, blood magic falling so far out of favor it ceased to be. A united Thedas: that would be a surprise. // Words: 25369
I think this is most recced Cullrian fic and for a good reason. Slow burn, drama, all the delights.
Light In This Darken'd Time Breaks by RamonaDecember
Summary: Cullen wouldn't say he hates mages, not anymore, but he can't see himself ever trusting one again. Dorian is no exception. The mage is off-color, self-important, and all together too much for Cullen to deal with. So why is it that every time Cullen is at his lowest, Dorian seems to be the only person by his side? // Words: 121289
Slow burn with 121289 words, what more do you want?
Cullen/Bull
Jump In by Dragonflies_and_Katydids
Summary: In which Cullen is almost terminally awkward, Bull and Dorian are literally brothers (because why not?), and Bull tries really hard to be good. Or: In which Dorian tries to set up his brother and his roommate, if he can avoid killing them for being so clueless. (You might get cavities from reading it. Don't say I didn't warn you.) // Words: 33700
What did I say about Dragonflies_and_Katydids and ridiculous premises? But if you're as delighted with awkward Cullen as am I - enjoy.
Dragons from Stars in an Empty Sky by Midna_Ronoa
Summary: The one in which Bull takes Cullen dragon-hunting. // Words: 10423
Fluff and smut and dragons!
Stuck on the Puzzle by thespectaclesofthor
Summary: Once, back in Kirkwall, Cullen had an arrangement with a member of the city guard that satisfied his needs. But time changed all things, and he despaired of ever finding a similar arrangement again - that was, until he met The Iron Bull. Problem being that Bull seemed to care far more about sorting out the nitty-gritty of such an arrangement than Cullen ever has. // Words: 235586
No fic rec lists that can involve Bullen canot do without Stuck on the Puzzle. If you haven't read it - please give it a try. As far as I'm concerned - the best fic in the fandom. And definately one of the best fics in general. <3
Cullen/Dorian/Bull
Exit Light by Dragonflies_and_Katydids
Summary: In which Cullen is suicidally depressed, Dorian is a high-functioning alcoholic, and Bull just wants them both to be happy, except when he wants to crack their heads together for being emotionally stunted idiots. // Words: 77427
This premise is actually very close to canon, compared to some other stories by the same author recced here. The angst? Delightful. The smut? Delicious. The exploration of issues? Delectable! Cheff kisses all around.
to burn cool and collected by toomanyhometowns
Summary: Dorian hums. "Here is the function of the spell: Upon invocationne, ye caster's spyryt shal sterte to ye form of whomsoever mofte recently achieved releafe by hys hande." He taps the page in punctuation and looks back up. "And then there's a lot of text about the vast joys we may experience together, et cetera, et cetera." // Words: 16121
Ok, this list shows more than anything that my main delight is issues and angst wrapped in with porn. Anyway - cracky premise (body swap!), and angsty, sexy outcome.
Hold by queeniegalore
Summary: Everyone knows Cullen doesn't trust magic. But he trusts Dorian and Bull, so maybe they can make this work. // Words: 6654
Issues? Trauma? Kink? I'm a one trick pony when it comes to recs.
Cullen/Cole
Okay now that we’ve gotten the obvious out, let’s enjoy the trully unexpected enjoyment.
Into The Light (Cole/Cullen Ficlets) by Sinister_Kid
Summary: A series of what I hope are tasteful Cole/Cullen fics that don't exploit or overly sexualize Cole's developing character. Based on a prompt I filled out of boredom in which I imagined the spirit actually hearing someone's pain like a physical noise in his ears that caused discomfort. Explores the option of making Cole more human, with my own original take on how that affects him as a character, and depicts Cole developing romantic feelings for the Commander as he discovers what it means to be human. // Words: 20454
I admit I don't often read Cole shippy fics but this one stays true to the info in the summary and it is careful and tasteful. Also Cullen learning to speak with Cole properly - <333
Cullen/Varric
Verse & Volley Triptych by boycoffin
Summary: POSSIBLE TITLES: This Shit Was Even Weirder: A Surprisingly Not-Doomed Romance In The Shadow of the Apocalypse The Commander and the Rogue already taken, Antivan maritime smut with an elf girl in it How The Hell I Ended Up With That Guy: A Tale for The People Who Keep Asking Me About It In Bars The Short and Curlies that's just terrible Love Among the tropey garbage A Tale of Two Names pretentious and unclear The Penman's Paramour Memoirs of a Moron (That He's Going to Regret Publishing and Will Never Hear The End Of for As Long As He Lives) // Words: 133354
One of the very few fics in which I can not only accept but love 1st person POV. Crack. Slow-burn. Pennames. Lovable OCs. DELICIOUS. Also a fic that made me start this blog, so love all around.
Cullen/Krem
Last but not least, my delightful fave (maybe, possibly, probably) and involving a shameless self-plug because it’s the month of pride.
Swordplay by orphan_account
Summary: The Bull's Chargers are undisciplined, untested, and unprofessional; but Cullen can't stop thinking about their lieutenant. // Words: 3910
I have a soft spot for whoever Krem being shipped with not knowing he's trans at first. But also oblivious, pining Cullen <3
If you have been starving, a creature of bone by missivesfromghosts
Summary: Cullen is content with where he is. He has a life and a purpose. He’s doing the Maker’s work and he’s cut the Chantry’s leash on him. He barely thinks about the fact that he’s trans anymore. The last person who knew he was born anything different, barring his sister Mia, died during the Blight. This works for him. That is, until he starts falling for Krem. // Words: 769
A tiny thing but I have a soft spot for the idea. Also what's better than a ship with trans character? A ship with two trans characters. Keep that in mind for further recs actually.
Sweet, Merciful Andraste by Tainaron
Summary: PWP. Honestly, Cullen should invest in walls and a ceiling that don't have holes if he's going to keep having such loud sex. Pure, unapologetic smut between trans men who love each other. // Words: 4187
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ What more do you want from me? Sometimes porn is just porn. Enjoy.
Champions of the Just by Tainaron
Summary: En route to Griffin Wing Keep before the battle of Adamant, Cullen falls prey to an injury that reveals a shameful secret about his trauma with magic. As Cullen struggles with his past, his duty to the Inquisition, and his love life, he becomes increasingly uncertain if he’s the target of an assassination attempt or just his own personal demons. // Words: 67885
Well, I also have some plottier and angstier fics in my rec disposal. This one actually explores the problems Krem and Cullen could encounter in their relationship and all within the canon plot line. Plus bonus points of Cullen actually interacting with other Chargers.
cabbage: a love story by psikeval
Summary: Krem’s grin fades into a quiet smirk, his eyes warm and amused, and Cullen does not forget how to move his legs because he is a grown man, a leader of soldiers, commander of the Inquisition’s army. He breaks the silence by coughing loudly, because he is also an imbecile. // Words: 18932
Creme de la creme of Krem/Cullen fics <3 Fluff, crack, porn <3 This delightful series has it all!

Notes on Tevinter Nights
I finished reading Tevinter Nights not so long ago, so here is an overview of what is happening in Thedas. There is probably nothing particularly new since I'm a bit late to the party. However, I find such overviews convenient to refresh my memory when needed. Perhaps it will be useful to someone else!
This overview was meant to be short, but there were so many interesting details... now, it is huge.
Also, since I’ve read the translated version, any help with wording clarifications is greatly appreciated!
The post is under a cut due to Tevinter Nights spoilers (and length).
Global events
- There is a war between the Qunari and Tevinter.
- Three branches of the Qun do not agree with each other. The Antaam, the military branch of the Qun, attacked Ventus and continued the invasion without the permission of the other two. It results in faster progress of the invasion as the other two branches were a moderating influence on the Antaam. The Ben-Hassrath holds a neutral position.
- In Tevinter, the Venatori are still a problem.
- Smaller countries like Rivain and Antiva are under serious threat of the Qunari’s invasion.
- The heads of the Antivan Crows, eight Talons, held a meeting to join their forces, protect Antiva, and withstand the Qunari's invasion. The meeting was disrupted, and four out of eight Talons were murdered. New heads of the Crows will be chosen soon.
- The king of Nevarra is on the brink of death. The Mortalitasi, who have always had great power in Nevarra, continue to interfere in politics.
- All the Grey Wardens were summoned to Weisshaupt.
- We were introduced to a considerable amount of characters from the guild of treasure hunters, the Lords of Fortune.
- Regarding the Inquisition, little is known. All external issues of the organization seem to be handled by Varric Tethras. He gives quests, monitors their implementation, hires new people.
- One of the Executors, or ‘those across the sea’, showed up in the flesh. Solas said they are particularly dangerous and cautioned against interacting with them.
- By now, many have heard rumours of the Fen’Harel’s cult.
Minrathous
- A demon or something far worse is imprisoned under Minrathous. With the help of the Venatori, it is now unsealed (will probably be sealed again later). Yet, to awake it, some blood-magic ritual must be performed.
- The creature was sealed with eight blood-bonded enchanted clay disks. They showed a long and thin four-winged dragon rising from the dark waters.
- It is said that ‘demon’ is not the best word to describe this creature. It is something ancient and mighty, unnamed, something that will subject to god only.
- This ‘demon’ was a part of Corypheus’ plan of making Tevinter great again. According to this plan, Minrathous was to become the cradle of the new world. If Minrathous had not surrendered to Corypheus, the ‘demon’ would have left the city no choice.
- Most of the population of Minrathous could have perished as a result of this creature awakening.
- Enchanted predators and monsters resulting from magical experiments seem to be common in Minrathous.
Elven experiments
- In Nevarra, under a mountain with three asymmetric peaks wrapped around each other, there is a dwarven thaig. This thaig is called Hormak, and it was lost to the darkspawn hundreds of years ago.
- In Hormak, Grey Wardens have found elven halls, where experiments on living were conducted. And it is quite lively in these halls now.
- There is a huge pool with a greyish fluid that reeks of brine. It creates hybrids.
- There were different types of hybrids: darkspawn with other darkspawn, animals with other animals, darkspawn with animals, and even a centipede and a Grey Warden hybrid.
- When a hurlock stepped in the greyish fluid, it was enveloped and then transformed into a drake and a hurlock hybrid.
- The transformed Grey Warden said that the fluid affects ‘them’ (sentient races?) differently. To be transformed, it is not enough to touch it. The fluid should get inside the body.
- All over the place were large repetitive bas-reliefs depicting ancient elven. There were three types of them. The first one showed majestic elven kings and queens with reverent supplicants. The second one showed elven mages healing sick. The third showed big aravels, drawn by herds of hallas, going to distant mountains (one of the mountains had three peaks wrapped around each other).
- Later, those bas-reliefs were described differently. On the first one, elven rulers were arrogant and despised their subjects, who seemed to be in great terror. On the second one, mages weren’t healing sick, but on the contrary, they were injecting corruption into bodies. On the third, a halla had a strange rounded body and very long and ridged horns, and an aravel had bars on its windows, which made it look like a cage.
- Somewhere at the entrance of the halls was one more type of repetitive bas-reliefs. It showed three figures: a supplicant, a priestess, and a monster. On each subsequent bas-relief, a supplicant and a monster were different, while the priestess remained the same. It seemed that with each subsequent bas-relief, her grin grew wider.
- The experiments are directed by some will, which is referred to as a female. ‘She’ is not yet there, ‘they’ are waiting for ‘her’.
- Symbols of horns of a halla are present on each column in the halls.
- According to bas-reliefs, there are twelve such places in total.
The Inquisition members and allies
For completeness, this part should have included information from the comic, but I tried to avoid that.
- According to Tevinter Nights, Varric and Charter remained in the ranks of the Inquisition.
- Charter mentions her lover, Tessa.
- Vaea and ser Aaron show up but without a clear relation to the Inquisition.
- There are two mages, Vadis and Irian, who saved a peaceful Qunari settlement called Kont-aar from an agent of Fen'Harel, thus keeping the chance of subtle peace between the Ben-Hassrath and Tevinter. The Ben-Hassrath returned the favour by directing said mages to Kirkwall, to a certain dwarf, where they intend to go after seeing Val Royeaux.
- Sutherland and Company are still loyal to the ideals of the Inquisition.
- Quentin Calla, who was a bearer of the enchanted clay disk for a while, provided the Inquisition with some information.
- Philliam, a Bard!, (formerly) Sister Laudine, and Brother Ferdinand Genitivi, with the help of the Lord of the Fortune, Mateo, accepted and completed the quest from the Inquisition.
Fen’Harel and the red lyrium idol
- The red lyrium idol's adventures ended. It is now in Solas' hands, or at least he says so.
- There are three descriptions of the red lyrium idol's appearance. The first one, made by the dwarf, the Carta assassin: two figures, too thin to be dwarves, caressing each other. The second one, by Mortalitasi: two lovers or a god mourning the sacrifice. The third, by Solas: crowned figure comforting another one. (Note: I remind you these are not exact quotes but a translation of the translation, and nuances might have been lost.)
- Some qualities of the idol: red lyrium weighs more than the usual one; the idol is liquid inside; it reacts to other lyrium.
- The idol created or revealed a ritual blade.
- Solas calls the idol his.
- The Mortalitasi recounted the events in the Fade in which Solas took a form of a giant wolf the size of a high dragon. He had burning eyes like those of a pride demon and wings of fire which later resolved themselves into lesser demons. The Fade is called his natural home, and it is said spirits serve him gladly.
- Solas pays special attention to the actions of the Inquisition.
- Members of Fen'Harel's cult would rather die than be captured.
- The ritual the Dread Wolf performs already affects the Fade.
Random interesting facts
- The Qunari slowly cut down a part of the Arlathan Forest.
- The Ben-Hassrath are said to know the most about Solas’ actions.
- Among four killed Talons was Giuli Arainai, Eighth Talon, and this might be a good time for Zevran to show up somehow.
- There was a lyrium crystal that produced a light with shades of green and yellow in Hormak.
- Dorian no longer has slaves, only hired labourers.
- Josephine sent Dorian some good Antivan wine. :)
- Vaea now possesses a healing artefact, which seems to be able to heal anything except death.
- There is an example of a dwarven metal prosthetic of a leg, which does not seem to restrict movement in any way.
Since I’ve read Tevinter Nights after the last Dragon Age Day... - Evka became a Grey Warden and did rescue the next one!
- The hunger demon that turned a person into a werewolf in the village called Eichweill was not completely defeated.
- It seems those elven artefacts do strengthen the Veil, after all.
- The Randy Dowager is Ferdinand Genitivi. Five scarves fluttered in shock out of five.
⠀
This is all for Tevinter Nights for now. I did not include plenty of curious facts, probably enough for another post. I hope you enjoyed it anyway!
If you have any corrections regarding facts, or grammar, etc., don’t hesitate to DM me! Or you may leave a comment in my ask box if you want to stay anonymous.
Thank you for the attention, and have a nice day!

A Tall and Small Collection | Soren | Square One Again
Rey yawned and rubbed his eyes. For the first time in several weeks, he had a restful sleep and he felt at ease once again being with his oldest brother; however, it was short lived. Upon opening his eyes, he suddenly realized that Soren wasn’t beside him – Dorian was.
Before his mind could race and send him spiraling into panic, he looked around to see Soren sitting at the edge of their makeshift bed.
“Hey,” Soren said softly. “Good morning.” Soren smiled warmly. He had missed how Soren’s smile spread all the way through to his eyes. The moment would have gone unspoiled if Rey didn’t spot Ashlynn sitting up in bed.
His eyes widened and he naturally shrunk back into the covers, bringing them under his chin and over his mouth. Soren noticed this shift and glanced back to Ashlynn. Without a word, she folded the covers off of her body, got up, and headed for the kitchen. Soren and Rey both let out an involuntary exhale, each for different reasons. Soren shook his thoughts away and looked to his youngest brother.
“Did you sleep okay?” he asked. Rey pulled the blankets from his face and played with the edges of the fabric. It was very soft between his fingers. He couldn’t help but look at the door where the human left through.
“Yeah,” he murmured. His eyes eventually found his brother’s eyes, for the first time noticing the circles beneath them.
“You… stayed up all night?” he asked. Soren nodded.
“I told you I would,” Soren replied. Their speaking, though still low, was enough to stir Dorian. His brown furrowed as he inhaled slowly and deeply. He winced as he stretched, undoubtedly tugging at the wounds beneath his bandages. Dorian’s eyes flittered open before he became instantly alert and sat up.
“Soren? Where’s the… is she…” Dorian looked around. Soren felt a hint of pride in his brother’s vigilance and concern.
“It’s okay,” Soren soothed, pulling himself further onto the makeshift bed. “She’s making breakfast. It’ll take a while.” Both of the younger brothers exchanged a nervous glance – and Soren could guess that there were a few reasons behind it. “I know she makes you nervous, but it’s really okay.” This didn’t seem to reassure them. To his surprise, Rey spoke up first.
“We… well… dad said that you might be different; that humans had this effect on us over time.” Rey’s statement was reminiscent of what Dorian said the night before. It stung. Soren sighed and shook his head, jaw clenching and unclenching involuntarily. Soren shook his thoughts away. He couldn’t think about that right now.
“I’m going to tell you what I told Dorian yesterday,” he started. “I haven’t changed – no matter what Brady said. I had to improvise to survive and made some difficult choices including staying with Ashlynn because I could not take care of myself with my leg injured like this.”
Soren breathed in shakily. “Which brings me to something I know we need to talk about, and you’re not going to like it. We have to stay here a little longer.” Dorian and Rey glanced at one another and then back to him, their slightly dulled blue eyes conveying nervousness and uncertainty.
“S-stay? For how long?” asked Dorian. His thumb absentmindedly traced over the bandages Soren placed on his forearm. “Why can’t we leave?”
Rey nodded in agreement. “Yeah, we’re together now. We have you,” agreed Rey. Soren nodded and smiled. He didn’t want to shatter their perception of him. He was the older brother – the undefeatable hero always able to pull through at the last possible moment. Perhaps it was selfish, but Soren coveted those moments.
“Yes, we’re together – and that’s not going to change; however,” Soren sighed heavily, and his brothers took notice. “I am still hurt. My leg is on the mend and it should be better soon. Until then, I can’t borrow. I can’t run. I can’t carry my bag or anything I find. I can barely climb.” The brothers’ faces began to fill with worry. It was heart crushing.
“B…but… what are we going to do?” whimpered Dorian. Soren leaned forward and clasped his brothers’ hands. Their eyes fixed onto his.
“We’re going to stay for just a little bit longer,” said Soren calmly. “I’ll talk to Ashlynn – she’s the human – and have some arrangements made. We can put our beds on the ground under the bed or just inside the wall; but, until I get better, we have to stay nearby.” They looked reluctant and still unsure, but nodded. To Soren, it looked like they were possibly accepting their perceived fate of captivity.
Soren knew there was nothing he could say in that moment to calm them further. Even he was unsure until very recently about Ashlynn and her intentions. Guard always at the ready. Fate accepted in the worst-case scenario. Soren could hardly say he was as okay as he let on. He shook his thoughts away. There was no time to think about such things now.
His eyelids grew heavy and threatened to close on him. Was he really that tired? The yawn that crept up on him was barely stifled as he returned his attention to his brothers. He needed to find out what happened to that pathetic excuse of a dad, Brady, and fill in the pieces that only Dorian and Rey knew.
“Trust me,” he said finally with another reassuring smile. He saw them nod in acknowledgment, which was enough for now. “Now… I know it only happened yesterday, but I need you to tell me what has happened while I was gone. Where did you go? Where have you been living? Where is Br… I mean, your dad?”
Dorian and Rey both shuffled under the covers closer together, as if their simple proximity with one another would make the situation better and make them more comfortable. Rey was the first to speak up.
“After we got back in the walls, we did like you said and ran a good distance away back toward camp just in case; and we waited and waited,” began Rey. “Dad came back and… and…” Rey sniffed and wiped his eyes with the base of his palm.
“And I wasn’t with him,” finished Soren. They nodded.
“We begged dad to go back and even offered to help, but he said the human got you and that you were captured,” finished Dorian.
Both boys spoke slowly, voices crestfallen as if they were admitting guilt to some kind of crime. Soren clasped their hands harder and pulled himself closer just as they pulled themselves closer to him.
“He said he would keep an eye out and that we would rescue you when the human wasn’t looking; but, before that, we had to move camp. Dad thought the human would make you tell where we were. So, we moved,” said Dorian.
“Yeah,” added Rey. “He had us climb an entire floor up so we could stay in the ceiling.”
“He had you what?” Soren didn’t mean to interrupt. It was completely involuntary, but he couldn’t believe what he had just heard. [An entire floor? They only just learned how to climb a line properly. It’s a miracle they didn’t slip and fall.] He watched his brothers nod again.
“Dad said it was safer there. There was a place with sturdy wood, and it was warm. We moved everything and made camp,” finished Rey. Soren exhaled slowly as Dorian continued the account.
“We did see you from the ceiling. Dad found where you were after the first week or so and took us to see. That’s… when he told us that you might be different…. We saw her doing something to you, but dad made us leave,” said Dorian. Soren felt himself roll his eyes, disguised as a long blink. [At least Brady has that much going for him. He didn’t make them witness everything that happened to me.]
“After that…” Dorian’s voice snapped Soren back to the present. “He went out and tried borrowing what he could, but there wasn’t a lot since we couldn’t go where you were for safety. We tried rationing the food, but… dad… he was having a hard time bringing back rations.”
“After a couple weeks, he said there was a new family he was watching and he was going to try and get food from them. He left, told us to be safe, and to not go to the apartment where you were,” said Dorian.
“How long ago was that?” asked Soren. The brothers exchanged unsure glances. They could tell time, but the family watch was at their last home and was too heavy to bring with them. Soren was impressed that his brothers remembered the account and were able to convey it without losing their nerve – at least for now. He knew there was more to the story.
“Maybe… four days? Five? I don’t remember,” said Rey.
“I don’t remember either,” muttered Dorian.
“Okay. Then what happened?” prompted Soren. They shifted uncomfortably. [That’s what I was waiting for. This next bit is going to be rough] thought Soren as he braced himself for what was to come.
“Well… dad… he said he would; but – he didn’t come back…” muttered Rey. Tears were gathering in his and Dorian’s eyes. [That’s what I thought. Sounds like something happened with the new humans who moved in.]
“We didn’t know where to go and we were so hungry. The lines were still up – the ones you put up. So, we climbed down to see what happened. We thought we could get to the place you took us with all of the chips. I had my hook and we both had line; but, we got turned around and ended up in the old lady’s apartment,” said Dorian.
Soren watched as both of their breathing became shallower. Their eyes darted around as if they could see the events happening again and again in front of them.
“That’s when Rey got stuck?” asked Soren.
“It was so scary Soren,” whimpered Rey. “I… I was trying to be careful and quiet and I just tripped under the cabinet.”
“I tried to get him out,” added Dorian, lower lip quivering. “But the more we struggled the harder it got. I-I-I tried to find something to help pry him off, but that’s when…” His hand involuntarily grabbed at the bandages and wounds on his arms.
“I didn’t see the cat and it got me. I… t-th-thou-ght that it was gonna e-ea-t me, but it l-let me go when the human came in the room. I ran as fast as I could back to R-r-ey to hide, but the cat followed me and so d-did the human,” sniffed Dorian. “That’s when she grabbed the sticky trap with Rey and took him away.”
“It was so scary Soren!” Rey choked partially on a sob as he whipped his eyes with the back of his free hand.
“Shhh… it’s okay,” soothed Soren as he leaned forward and rubbed his brother’s shoulder. He finally had a better idea of what had actually happened and, whether it was fortunate or unfortunate, it was just like he suspected.
“So, after that,” said Soren. “You came to find me?” Dorian nodded silently. “I’m glad you did.” Dorian glanced up at him almost disbelievingly, like he was disappointed in himself.
“Even though I was seen and now we’re here with a human?” he asked quietly. Soren nodded.
“Especially now. If you didn’t come and be as brave as you were facing Ashlynn not knowing what would happen, Rey wouldn’t be here. Dorian, you helped save your brother. That’s nothing to be upset or beat yourself up about,” said Soren before scooting closer and pulling his brothers into a tight hug. They leaned into him, wrapping their arms as tight as they could around his shoulders.
There were two conflicting sensations happening simultaneously. The first was the warmth of the embrace with his brothers. He was finally able to help them after being taken out of commission. The second was a sickening feeling in the pit of his stomach. Brady’s whereabouts were still unknown and the pain his brothers went through could only heal with time.
What made the matter worse was the moment was interrupted when both brothers inhaled sharply and shrank in Soren’s grasp. Soren turned to see Ashlynn poking her head through the door, a tray in her hand. He exhaled to relax himself.
“It’s okay! Just give us a minute,” called Soren. Ashlynn, barely hearing his voice, nodded and ducked back out of the room. “Ashlynn made breakfast. So, she’s going to come into the room and bring in a tray of things. Knowing her, she’ll probably have bandages too.”
Dorian and Rey both whimpered and pulled themselves slightly under the blankets. Their lack of trust was making Soren uneasy. He remembered the fear they were going through, but hardly felt it anymore. Was Brady right? Had he really changed so much? The thought of a human seeing him used to terrify him, but now it felt simpler; like he could be at ease with someone he could trust.
He couldn’t think about that now. Instead, he shook those thoughts away and prepared his brothers.
“Okay, here’s how this is going to go. I’m going to call her back in. She’ll drop off breakfast and whatever is on that tray, I’ll thank her, and then she’ll leave for a while. Okay?” Dorian and Rey nodded, but also looked like they’d rather duck under the covers to hide. “It’ll just be a minute.”
Soren stood and hobbled to the edge of the nightstand. “Ashlynn! We’re good. You can come in now!” His voice carried across the vast room to the door. Once again, Ashlynn came in with the tray.
“You okay?” she asked softly upon seeing the way Soren kept glancing back at his brothers. He nodded and watched her set the tray onto her bed. Much to her relief, Ashlynn let Soren point and guide where she placed the different elements which included several bottle caps, a roll of foil, and a two bowls.
The first bowl was filled with finely chopped scrambled eggs with bits of different elements in them which Soren guessed were different meats and vegetables. The second bowl was steaming slightly with warm water. Ashlynn also placed some bandages and cream nearby.
“Ashlynn,” called Soren as she turned to retrieve the tray. “Thank you.” There was a reassurance in her smile, but also a slight hurt that she was back at square one in gaining trust. “Are… I mean… what are your plans for the day?” Ashlynn gave a partial shrug and sighed.
“Not sure just yet. It’s my cleaning day, so I’ll do that for sure. You?” she returned the question. Soren felt a small smile tug onto his lips.
“I’m going to make sure they’re okay and,” he paused as a yawn snuck up on him. “I think I may lay down. We could all use more rest.”
“Not a bad idea,” replied Ashlynn. “I’ll go ahead and leave you to it. I’ll be back later.” With that, she slipped out of the room.
The warm food was much appreciated, especially since missing their meal the previous night. They ate in silence, enjoying the first meal they had together in what felt like forever. After they finished, Soren took the time to change Dorian and Rey’s bandages before washing their dishes in the rest of the warm water.
At this point, Soren was exhausted. His eyes were drooping. Each thought he tried to form faded into the abyss of his mind. There was only one cure – sleep. He needed sleep, but he couldn’t bear the thought of his brothers worrying while he slept. He couldn’t go without sleep though.
He stayed conscious as long as he could as he staggered back to their makeshift bed and flopped onto the soft, cushiony fabric. Dorian and Rey rushed to his side and shook him.
“Soren? Soren! Are you okay?” they asked in unison. Soren nodded.
“Don’t worry bobbins. Just tired,” yawned Soren.
“B…but… what if she…” started Dorian. Soren reached up with both hands and ruffled the hair on their heads.
“Don’t worry bobbins,” he smiled as he dragged himself back into the same place he was the night before. The moment he was situated, Dorian and Rey tucked themselves into his sides, heads resting on his shoulders. Soren’s arms draped over their arms as he pulled them in tight. “We’ll be alright. If she come back in, you can ask her to leave nicely or just wake me up. Okay?” He felt them both nod and mutter an “okay.”
It took moments for Soren to be pulled into a deep sleep. Dorian and Rey both glanced at one another from across his chest. Was this their life now? Were they really going to be set free? Or had Soren pulled them into a trap set by a human?
For now, all that mattered was that they were together; and, soon, they too drifted off to sleep.

Unexpectedly Greek
In trade for the fun Bifrost writing prompt, @yourheartonfire had a great one for me:
The local animal rescue gets a report of three stray dogs trapped in a construction site. But when they get there they find a single animal: Cerebus, the three headed hound of Hades.
Here we go; 1324 words!
~~~
When Sherry and Lou arrived in the animal control van, all they’d been told was that there had been a report of three dogs trapped at the construction site behind one of the tackier casinos. The place was Greek god themed, with an emphasis on Zeus, a terrible idea as far as Sherry was concerned. She was explaining this to Lou for the second time when they pulled in to park.
“Zeus is the reason for half the problems in Greek mythology,” she said, undoing her seatbelt. “Couldn’t keep it in his pants, wouldn’t take no for an answer, and terrible judgement. It’s amazing there’s no legend of Hera finally murdering him and taking over the pantheon.”
Lou nodded as he pocketed the keys. “That wouldn’t even be out of place. Didn’t he kill his own dad?”
“I thought so too, but it sounds like he just imprisoned him.” Sherry opened the door and hopped out. “After a bloody revolution, of course. Zeus has two approaches to problem-solving: give it a good stabbing, or give it a good stabbing, if you know what I mean.”
They chuckled over that while they grabbed catch-poles and headed in the direction of voices. This place was pretty empty as casino property went. The guard at the gate was the only person they’d seen yet among the various stones, boards, and heavy machinery.
“Hello?” Sherry called. “Animal control!”
Exclamations and scrambling sounded from behind a stack of concrete blocks, and three men appeared. They were wearing hard hats and panicked expressions. The tall one hung back to keep an eye on something out of sight. The oldest one stepped forward to greet them.
“Hey, thanks for coming,” he said, speaking quickly. “I’m Ted. These are Dorian and Kyle. Did you bring any tranquilizer darts with you?”
“Are the dogs suffering?” Sherry demanded, “Or dangerous?”
Ted got as far as “D—” before the most godawful bellowing filled the air. It could have come from a dog, if the dog was built like a tank and half that size. The three construction workers flinched.
The animal control experts just stared. “Is that one of them?” Sherry asked, pointing in the direction of the noise.
Ted nodded.
The lookout, Kyle, announced, “It’s still in there, but the block is tipping. I think he’s gonna push his way out.” He edged to the side, hiding as much of his body as possible from whatever was around the corner.
“How big are we talking?” Sherry asked.
“Are all three of them that size?” Lou said at the same time.
Ted shook his head. “One dog, three heads,” he said. “I only said three dogs because the person on the phone wouldn’t have believed me if I said a monster.”
“Conjoined twins aren’t monsters,” Sherry said reflexively. Another roar shook the air. “I’ve never heard of a three-headed dog surviving past infancy, much less something big and strong.” She moved to look around the corner.
A large pipe lay bracketed by concrete blocks, which had clearly been set there by the crane nearby. The block at one end was indeed wobbling like something was pushing from inside the pipe.
“You know that prank calls come with a fine, right?” Sherry asked, glancing back at Ted. “If that’s some of your buddies in there, no one’s going to be laughing.”
Ted stepped back at a renewed surge of deep-voiced barking. “No prank. You’ll see in a second, I think. Got those darts handy?”
Before Sherry could answer, a thunderous crack sounded and everyone jumped. She looked back to see the pipe crumble as something that truly deserved the name monster fought its way out.
It was huge, black, and just as three-headed as promised. Long-necked and serpentine, and Sherry wasn’t imagining the red glow in its eyes. A thin tail lashed behind it, more snakelike than any dog Sherry knew. The central head lifted in a howl. The other two joined in. Unearthly and primal, the sound made Sherry’s knees weaken in a way they never did.
Someone was talking. Ted’s voice.
“We lured it in there with food, then dropped the last block behind it,” he said. “It just appeared out of the dig site, where the casino’s excavating for their Hades wing.”
Sherry’s head whipped around. “A three-headed dog appeared in the Hades wing? Are you kidding me?”
“No, really! It just walked out of the hole, the one with the stones from the real Greek temple!”
Sherry waved her arms, nearly hitting Lou with the catch-pole. “Did it occur to anyone that you’ve somehow called up Cerberus into the heart of Las Vegas??”
It hadn’t. The three men shuffled a bit, glancing nervously back to where Cerberus was currently sniffing around for more food. “We were busy throwing our lunches at it so it didn’t eat us,” Ted said.
“Okay, okay, let’s think this through,” Sherry said with a look at Lou. “He’s not trapped, he’s not hurt, and he might actually know the way home. We should see if we can lure him back into that hole. Where can we get lots of meat quickly?”
Five minutes later, the hotel buffet was significantly emptier, and someone would be coming for answers soon. But that was a problem for later. Sherry and Ted coordinated the operation: Sherry tossed hamburger patties with Lou while the construction workers laid a trail toward the portal to hell. It was as good a plan as any.
“Peegain speeti,” Lou recited, mispronouncing the phrase from his phone’s translator. Sherry hoped that it sounded at least something like “go home.”
Thankfully — oh so thankfully — Cerberus played along. Despite the hellfire eyes and the jaws that could snap any of them into pieces, the giant hound behaved like a dog. A hungry one.
Sherry ran out of hamburger patties and moved on to hot dogs, skipping backward while the three heads squabbled over which got which piece. Lou was throwing handfuls of taco meat and bacon bits. Cerberus ate that too.
He followed them to the entrance of the dig site, which the trio had hurriedly vacated. A trail of meatloaf chunks and ribeye steak led into the depths. With his three heads vacuuming the ground and his tail waving happily, Cerberus disappeared into the hole.
Sherry did a headcount. She found all present, and two filming the scene.
“Really, Lou?” Sherry asked.
“No one will believe us otherwise,” he replied levelly, phone still trained on the hole. “And if this is how I die today, then I want there to be a record of it.”
“Fair enough.” Sherry wiped her hands on her pants and stepped forward, listening hard. “I think he’s still eating,” she said.
Then the chewing stopped. Sherry held her breath. She could just picture the heads sniffing around for anything they’d missed. Would they turn back towards the sunlight, or return home? Was half the buffet enough?
Something rumbled: a grinding sound like rocks moving. Silence. Then grinding again, followed by a thud. Sherry had seen enough movies to interpret that as a magical door opening and closing. She went limp with relief.
“I think he’s gone!” she announced. The others cheered and congratulated each other. “Who wants to go down and check?” she continued. “Not it.”
There was a hearty round of disagreement.
Ted laughed. “I heard that door shut. I’ll look if you want to be the one to explain to the casino owners why they should fill this basement with cement, and ship the stones back to Greece.”
“Ooh, good point,” Sherry said.
Lou was reviewing his footage. “You know there’s a strong chance they’ll try to lure him back again so they can sell tickets, right?” he asked.
Sherry looked over at the broken pipe, whose scattered fragments held deep clawmarks. “If they do,” she announced, “I’m calling out sick that day.”
@whumptober2021 Day 3: Taunting, Insults
Fandom: Dragon Age Inquisition Characters: Dorian Pavus, The Iron Bull Tags: Assault, Mage-Templar Conflict, Self-Worth Issues, Hurt Dorian, Holy Smite, Protective Iron Bull Words: 3.484
Summary: Dorian can count on one hand the times he was hit by a Smite and it was always during training, leaving him shaky and sick the rest of the day. This feels so much worse, done out of malice, meant to cripple instead of teach.
“You were saying, mage?”
- A few Templars attack Dorian in Skyhold. Bull comes to the rescue.
---
It has gotten late. Dinner is already over and while there is faint music to be heard from the Herald’s Rest, the rest of Skyhold is eerily deserted. Dorian curses himself silently as he hurries through the dark corridors. He lost track of time in the library, which should not come as a surprise, really, but he knows better than to walk alone after dark.
He is not afraid. Dangers lurk around every corner, but he trusts in his ability to defend himself. The thing is, that he is not certain whether he should defend himself. The Tevinter Mage far from home, shrouded in mystery. People do not trust him here, but the reasons are so laughably threadbare. He is neither a blood mage nor does he want to overthrow any kingdoms.
“Mage,” a voice calls out, harsh but slightly too loud for the late hour.
Dorian hastens his step. He knows the distaste in the tone intimately, even if it is only since he left Tevinter that he learned it paired just as well with mage as it does with slave or son.
He keeps his head up, makes it look like he is not running away. Running never helps. While most of the soldiers here are cowards, some do like to hunt, and Dorian knows better than to give them a reason to.
“I’m talking to you.”
And Dorian is trying his best not to hear him. One of these days, he is going to accidentally incinerate a hapless Templar trying to waylay him. The uproar that will cause. Perhaps that will still better than this cat-and-mouse game that he always, always loses.
A hand grabs Dorian all of a sudden, appearing out of nowhere in the dark. Dorian, who was concentrating on the yelling man in his back has not been paying attention to what is ahead of him.
Another Templar. Even out of uniform they are unmistakeable. That fanatic fire in their eyes that burns brightest when Dorian is near. They like to leave their hands hovering over their hips, even when they are not wearing their swords, constantly following that urge to be ready, to cut down a mage, no questions asked.
“Is there something wrong with your ears, mage?” the Templar in front of him asks, his grip tight enough to leave bruises. Alcohol clouds his breath, almost as potent as hate.
“Nothing at all,” Dorian answers brightly, trying to tone down the sharpness of his voice. “Nobody was calling my name, though.”
He bites his tongue. So much for holding back. It is high time to get out of here before the stragglers reach them. But no matter how much he twists his arm, the Templar’s hold remains strong. He could put the man on his back, but mages are not allowed to defend themselves and he does not want all of Skyhold’s guards to be called down on him because these guys are screaming murder.
“You bloody ‘Vints, always thinking you’re better than us good folks.”
Dorian barely manages to keep his face from scrunching up, but some of his contempt must have slipped through anyway because the man’s scowl deepens. Definitely time to get out.
“Well, I better relieve you of my presence then. Wouldn’t want to ruin your night,” Dorian says and calls fire to his hands, not enough to burn but to warm his fingers in warning. To his dismay, the Templar’s grip only tightens and he pulls Dorian closer.
“The Inquisitor should have never let you in,” he snarls, his foul breath warm on Dorian’s cheek. “We’re trying to save the world, not break it.”
Unable to help himself, Dorian laughs. “Did you read that in one of Master Tethras’ novels? Mighty impressive, I didn’t think they wasted the energy on teaching war dogs to read.”
Dorian should shut up. The drunk guy behind him is coming closer, leaning on a friend’s shoulder. Three on one are not odds Dorian would think twice about in the field. Things are different here. Even drunk and clearly hoping for a fight, people will listen more closely to these three than Dorian.
He is just a mage, barely a friend of the Inquisitor, neither trusted nor even a real asset because who would want a necromancer in their back when they could have him dead and buried, safely sealed away. It grates at Dorian’s pride, but he has practice in being not wanted and sneered at. He does not think it will ever stop hurting but that does not mean he will let them see.
Dorian twists his hand, determined to scare them off even if he does not dare to actually attack them. But before he can do much of anything, the Templar takes an abrupt step forward and shoves Dorian against the wall behind him. The force rattles his ribcage, upsetting a bruise he got while training with Bull. He does not let the pain show but raises a hand and lets a flame dance on his palm, bigger now and definitely a threat. Hopefully, the reminder that he could fling a fireball at their heads will be enough to get them to back off.
What Dorian does not expect is the wave of sudden coldness slamming into him, making him double over. The energy crackling under his skin, ready to be called forth, vanishes, drained by the Smite, leaving only nausea in its wake.
It is a terrible feeling, beyond words. Wielding magic is like breathing, but the Smite is more than a chokehold. It feels as if boiling silver is poured down his throat, charring his insides and leaving nothing but a barren wasteland and the painful memory of greatness.
He can count on one hand the times he was hit by a Smite and it was always during training, leaving him shaky and sick the rest of the day. This feels so much worse, done out of malice, meant to cripple instead of teach.
“You were saying, mage?”
The drunk guy sounds much more sober now if no less disdainful.
Panic unfurls in the pit of Dorian’s stomach as he realizes he is cornered. He cannot run, he can not access his magic. He is helpless in the middle of the Inquisition’s stronghold.
Perhaps they will be happy with simply roughing him up a little, with teaching him his place. The drunk guy is leering at him, but Dorian has gone to his knees under equally terrible circumstances before. If they want to kill him, though, there is little he can do. This is not how his story will end. It cannot be. And yet, Dorian has his hands full with staying upright.
He barely feels the first punch. It rattles his body but the pain is a mere echo, lost in the void that has suddenly opened in Dorian’s very core.
The men are still talking, all three of them now towering over Dorian, but he just hears the hate in their voices, no actual words.
A punch the face snaps him out of his stupor, the acute sharpness of it enough to penetrate the fog that has settled over his senses. With consciousness, though, comes more fear.
“You mage scum are good for one thing, though,” one of the Templars says. Dorian is far beyond being able to recognize faces, but his wide grin reveals a missing tooth. “And once we’re done, we’ll bury you outside in the snow, do a favour for all of us.”
Dorian hates the cold and he really, really does not want to die in it. He does not want to die at all, but the how has suddenly become a far greater concern then the when. He opens his mouth, not sure whether to say something or to just scream, but he does not get to do either because another hit to the head makes his vision swim and his thoughts scatter.
“What is going on here?” a new voice interrupts, making the three Templars jump.
The sudden lack of contact between them has Dorian slumping against the wall, his legs shaking too badly to keep him upright. His mind, however, whirs into a panicked chorus of denial. Three men are more than enough, he cannot have even more join the apparent free-for-all he has become this night.
Then, though, he sees the men back away, and when he looks at the newcomer, he finds too broad shoulders and horns and - Dorian has never been so glad to see Bull. It does not matter that he is a mage or a ‘Vint, Bull will not leave him to his fate.
“We were just having a friendly discussion,” one of the Templars says.
Dorian’s brain is slowly sorting itself out again as no new pain comes forth, and he scoffs. It tugs at a fresh bruise on his face.
“The Inquisitor is making a mistake trusting these abominations.”
Dorian is pretty sure that is the one who used the Smite. He shivers, pushes himself further against the wall. The Templars are no match against Bull, but they are still standing like a wall in front of Dorian.
“I suggest that you run,” Bull says, his voice vibrating with something dark. “And if you’re smart, you’ll leave Skyhold tonight and never look back.”
“We don’t take orders from beasts,” the gap-toothed one spats, no ounce of self-preservation.
Dorian has seen Bull on the battlefield, bloodied and hungry for a fight, an unstoppable force. Right in front of their eyes, Bull transforms into something worse than that. His back straightens, making him grow even taller, and his eyes gleam with that same battle madness, focused unflinchingly on these three, puny men.
“Run,” he bellows and takes a swing. Even armour would not have saved Gap-Tooth for Bull does not hold back. His fist slams into the Templar’s jaw with a sickening crunch, throwing him through the air as if he weighs nothing.
That is enough of a demonstration that they do not question Bull again but run, stumbling over their own feet in their hurry to get away. Dorian would laugh at their turned backs, relishing in how the situation was flipped on them, but he is still too busy with just breathing.
He closes his eyes and catalogues the pain. The throbbing, familiar ache of bruises is easier to deal with than the terrifying void inside of him. He reaches for his magic and nothing answers. His skin is just skin and not a conduit. His body is just blood and bones and nerves, full of pain and longing now, nothing greater.
“Are you all right, big guy?” Bull asks, sounding way too close.
When Dorian opens his eyes, Bull is crouching next to him, the madness replaced by blatant concern.
He will live. Nothing feels broken and there are potions against the pain. This is not his first rodeo.
“Of course,” Dorian lies. He is not sure he can stand up, much less make the way back to his quarters. He does not particularly want to be alone either – he has never been this weak before. Or, well, he was once, when his father – better not go there. This evening is ruined enough.
“You were assaulted –” Bull says but trails off when Dorian pushes to his feet.
Shaking legs or not, he is done cowering and he does not need Bull’s pity. Bad enough he had to be saved.
“Merely a misunderstanding,” Dorian says and puts in the effort to regain control over his expression. “Although I appreciate you stepping in.”
He has some experience with putting himself back together. And being alone in his room does not sound so bad if he thinks about it. There, at least, will be nobody to act tough for.
Bull nods but Dorian knows him well enough by now that this battle is not won. Coming another step closer, he his hand on the crook of Dorian’s elbow, never bothering to ask whether Dorian even wants help.
“How often does this happen?” Bull asks, his tone just conversational enough to almost hide the simmering anger beneath.
Deep down, Dorian is flattered that Bull would be upset on his behalf, but if he lets this happen it will only lead to more complications down the road. So, while he does not push off Bull’s hand, he takes care not to lean on him and begins walking towards his room. It is slow going, at first, because his body feels wrong, missing something vital, but he is walking.
“Do you think there’s someone waiting around every corner trying to trip me up?” Dorian says, falling back on his old friend sarcasm. That at least is familiar. “They were drunk.”
Drunk and ready to kill him. That is definitely a step up from mere insults and the occasional try to trip him in the hallways.
“And yet you don’t seem surprised.” Bull looks at him from the side, with an intensity in his eyes that reminds Dorian that bull is not just a formidable fighter but also a spy. “This actually explains quite a bit. You love your wine, but you never get drunk. You always leave the tavern early and never alone. You -”
Dorian pulls his arm away from Bull, very aware that people keep touching him. The momentum of that almost throws him off balance, but apart from the sheer wrongness of being without magic and the exhaustion weighing him down, Dorian almost feels like himself again. Half of himself, covered in bruises, but not a victim anymore.
“Are you done analysing me?” he snaps, knowing that his glare falls flat. “Nothing happened.”
Bull does not visibly react to Dorian refusing his help but looks decidedly unimpressed. “You’re shaking.” He does not move further away but somehow manages not to crowd Dorian either.
“Well, let someone cut one of your limbs off and see how you like it.” It feels like that, only that the loss is not located in just one limb but all of him at once. Magic is always there, waiting just for his call. His entire skin prickles with it, his lungs draw it in alongside the air to breathe. Without it, he barely feels human.
“A limb?” Bull asks, confusion interrupting his casual interrogation. Did they – oh. They took your magic?”
Bull’s realization does not sit right with Dorian. There is no malice on his face, no relief. One of his Chargers is a mage and Bull never gave the impression he minded Dorian using magic, on or off a battlefield. But Dorian is only too aware of how Qunari view mages. It is probably unfair, but he still cannot quite think clearly. And part of him will always be wary of Bull’s loyalty to the Qun.
“One used the Smite,” he says, trying for nonchalance, although it is hard to fool Bull even when he is not exhausted and in pain. “I’ll be right as rain in a minute.” Or a few hours, if he can only lock his door and lie down.
“Dorian.” Bull pulls him to a stop, just the briefest of touches before he lets his hand fall again. “This is not okay. You need to talk to Cullen about this.” It is a miracle, how he can sound so serious while saying something this ridiculous.
Dorian is already walking such a fine line with the Inquisition. It does not matter that he very much wants to rid the world of Corypheus and that he would keep hunting Venatori on his own, that he wants to reform his homeland until it is something to be proud of again. The Inquisitor likes him and trusts him not to betray them. The rest of the Skyhold’s inhabitants? Not so much.
Cullen is always civil to Dorian, the same way he is to foreign diplomats and nobles. Their conversations have gotten a bit warmer since they started playing chess together. That does not mean that Cullen would go against his own people for the sake of a mage telling tales.
“I most definitely do not,” Dorian says with a glare. “I can handle myself.” He has done so a thousand times before and likely will a thousand more.
“That’s what it looked like.”
It is not like Bull to mock him. About his clothes or the way he drinks his wine, yes. But about losing a fight? A minute ago, he called it assault but now the blame has shifted to Dorian. It always does. Time to go so he can lick his wounds in private.
“If you’re done insulting me, then –”
Bull reaches out and Dorian flinches instinctively. It gives them both halt, so much more telling about Dorian’s state than his threadbare lies.
“What about the other mages?” Bull then asks, his tone gentle, reasonable. “What if they’re going for someone a little less noticeable next? Who doesn’t play chess with the Commander and has his ear?”
Dorian has thought about that before. The other mages usually do not go out alone, too used to be wary of Templars. And he doubts anybody would dare to touch Vivienne or Solas.
“They hate me because I’m from Tevinter.” It is certainly true. And he is never quiet about his disdain of Ferelden either. The weather, the dogs, the food. He will not be forbidden to speak the truth.
But Bull does not seem to buy it. “Is that all?
Dorian stays silent. He is loud and flashy and unrepentant, so that is what might have drawn their gaze. There is little about him that does not offend people here. But that is not what their main issue is with him, but the fact that he commands a power they do not understand and never will because they cower from it.
Being a mage is not a choice, though. In most parts of Thedas, magic is treated as something to be contained and caged. Control is important, certainly, but magic is in everything and cutting it out means going through life half-blind.
Dorian turns and starts walking again. He is done with this conversation. People will always come after him and making him a fool of himself in front of the Commander of the Inquisition forces will not change that. In fact, he might just get another enemy out of this.
“I can talk to Cullen, if you’d prefer,” Bull offers, keeping up easily with him.
“I don’t need you to fight my battles,” Dorian bites out. He will have to talk to Fiona and perhaps Vivienne to make sure that the other mages are not harassed too. He can deal with it, has done so for as long as he remembers, even if the insults change wherever he goes. But Bull is right, he will not let other experience the same.
“Never said you weren’t capable,” Bull says, his placating tone falling on deaf ears. “Do you know who they were?”
Dorian has no ideas. If he remembered every face that looked at him with disgust, every person who spewed insults or spat at him, he would not be able to cram anything else into his brain. It was never that important.
He shakes his head. “Cullen trusts the Templars that came with him.” And, despite the progress Cullen has undoubtedly made, he does not trust mages.
Bull nods but argues anyway, “We’re getting more refugees every day. He doesn’t know all of them.”
And they will still be Templars while Dorian is just an enemy mage. But Bull is right. If they are going after a member of the Inquisition’s inner circle, the other mages are not safe.
“I’ll talk to him,” he promises grudgingly. That is not a conversation he is looking forward to. He can already imagine the questions. Are you sure you did nothing to provoke them?
“Good.” Bull smiles as if he never doubted he would win the argument. “Let me walk you back to your quarters.”
Dorian should protest. He is a grown man. But he is tired and shaken to the core, still empty inside where his magic used to reside. He still does not want to be alone, does not want to peer around every corner, waiting for the next attack. The shadows seem to retreat from Bull’s massive form and Dorian is glad for the company.
He does not say thank you, but the corner of Bull’s mouth ticks further up as if he hears it anyway.
“Next time, just find me at the tavern. If I’m not there, the boys will be just as happy to help.”
Dorian nods, even though he does not understand the offer. Bull does not owe him anything. But this is something he has been learning slowly, relying on others. Maybe he can allow himself to get used to it. He can dream, at least.
A Little Braver - 24
Hello everyone! Here we are with chapter 24
It’s winter in Orynth and the guys have a busy day. Rowan and Lorcan enjoy their ride with the team and we also have some Elorcan gossip.
Rowan and Lorcan also talk and we discover something about Lyria...
Have fun!
The following morning Aelin woke up abruptly and missed the warm body at her side and curled under the duvet in a human burrito.
“Ro?” She called with just her head peeking from under her cover.
A moment later he sat down in bed offering her a cup of coffee.
“Cold.”
He leaned over to kiss her “it snowed last night. There’s over a metre of snow outside.”
“Lovely,” she protested “heaters fires, accidents, roof collapses due to snow, slips, more road accidents, pile ups.”
“Doom and gloom this early in the morning?”
She groaned and grabbed the coffee, sitting up with still the duvet all around her “I love snow and winter, but on my day off.” She took a sip of her coffee “house fires increase wildly. All those mantlepieces not properly attended. Electrical fires because too many appliances are connected to an outlet. And let’s not forget carbon monoxide related deaths. Such a magical time.”
“We’ll build a snowman when you are off shift.”
Then he offered her a plate full of scrambled eggs and bacon.
“You definitely know how to woo a woman.” She grabbed the plate and tucked in happily.
“You and Lorcan need to stay on the truck. No matter what’s going on outside.”
Rowan nodded “we will.” And he kissed her head. He was really looking forward to ride with the team.
An hour later they were walking across the yard in front of the station when Lorcan and Elide arrived as well. Together. Hand in hand.
Aelin tugged Rowan gently and he nodded.
“Arriving together?” Joked Aelin “naughty, naughty girl.”
Elide smiled “yes, I slept at Lorcan’s. Guilty.”
“Hey, I am just happy for you two.”
The four walked into the station and while Elide and Aelin went to get changed, the two men went to the common room where some members of the team were already there.
“The posh boys are here.” Shouted Aedion as soon as they stepped in.
Rowan bowed “indeed we are.” Then he noticed two new women and went to introduce himself “Hi, I am Rowan.”
“This is Borte, our new truck candidate,” Aedion went to the woman’s side and made the introductions “he is the captain’s flying boy,” then he pointed at Lorcan “grumpy pants over here is Lorcan. He grunts a lot but does not bite. And he’s Elide’s.”
Rowan burst out laughing.
“This young lady here is Evangeline.” And he moved to the side of the blonde-haired woman “she is our paramedic in training. She is riding with Lys and Elide.”
Rowan greeted her back and she gave him a timid smile.
Aelin arrived a moment later and went to give a kiss on the cheek of her cousin “did you remove all the snow from the entrance all alone?”
“No, he had two minions.” Said Brullo sprawled on the sofa watching tv “the man is a tyrant.”
“My arms are useless.” Complained Ress.
Aelin patted both on the shoulders “well, better get ready for a busy day. From the pile of reports I have on my desk from second shift it looks like we are in for a treat.”
“Are truck and engine all stocked up and ready?”
Aedion nodded “I did a check and we are good.”
“Lys and Elide are doing a final check on the ambulance for supplies.”
In that instant dispatch alarm went off calling all units of east station on site for a structure fire.
“Here we go guys.” They all scrambled, wore their gear and reached the trucks.
“You two, in there and stay put, ok?”
The two men nodded.
The trucks left the station and Rowan felt a thrill run through his spine.
“What’s a structure fire?”
“Bad news,” joked Brullo at Rowan’s side.
“Or usually, what we call Monday.” Added Aelin never averting the eyes from the road.
Rowan stared at Nox driving and was impressed at the skill. He navigated busy intersections with confidence.
Aelin honked the horn a few times “move, you idiots.” The traffic peeled to the side and the engine resumed its run swiftly.
Once they arrived at the site Rowan gasped. The fire had enveloped the entire house.
“That is a structure fire,” said Aelin and the team got off truck and engine and Aelin started to give orders.
“Manon, Luca, venting the back.”
“Wes you are taking second floor with me. Aedion, Kyllian, Nox, you go to the first floor. Borte you go with them and stick to Aedion. Asterin, Ansel, you do ground floor. Brullo, Ren you are at the water lines. We need to be quick.”
Both Rowan and Lorcan were watching the scene speechless.
“I know she does this on a daily basis, but seeing her jumping into a building on fire is different than just imagining it.”
Dorian arrived on the scene a moment later and got an update from Brullo and Ren who were ready with the water lines.
“Chief, captain, you have two minutes to finish primary search and rescue then you all evacuate.” He looked up at the fire and flinched “Manon, how’s that venting going?”
“Venting now, sir.”
Temporary relief washed over him when he saw Nox run out with a woman in tow.
Lorcan’s eyes set on Elide, jumping in the woman’s rescue with Lysandra.
Rowan stared as more firefighters came out with people but never Aelin. He noticed Dorian staring at the fire nervously “Evacuate now.” He ordered over the radio. The chief must have noticed a change in the fire to call for abandoning the rescue. Rowan followed in fascination trying to remember some of the thing about fire he had read in Aelin’s books.
Aelin was walking low, almost crawling looking for people hiding below the smoke “fire department call out.”
“I am all clear, we need to go.” Said Wesley at her back.
Aelin had a last look around and was about to leave the room when she heard a voice “Wes, get out. I got this.”
“Cap, we need to go. The chief ordered us to evacuate.”
“Wes, get out.” She shouted and left, running to the locked door where she heard the voice coming from.
She gave her back to the door and kicked it open. Then she turned and saw a crib and inside there was a toddler.
“Aelin, get the hell out now.” Dorian’s voice came over the radio. She picked up the boy and squeezed him in her fire jacket and held him close for protection.
“Come on… come on…” Rowan heard Dorian’s order and his heart was racing painfully. Why wasn’t she listening?
Then he saw it the flareup in her floor and shouted “Aelin, please…”
Aelin looked around the room and realised the flashover had cut off her only exit route. Then ran to the window and with her elbow she smashed the glass all while holding the infant.
“There!” shouted someone from a lower level.
“Ress, move the aerial to her.”
Aelin leaned over and sat astride on the window ledge.
Aedion ran up the aerial and grabbed the toddler “I got him, get your arse in here.”
She was about to fully climb over when another flashover rocked the house and Aelin got thrown off balance and grabbed the ledge with her hands and hung there.
Aedion saw her and ran back up “give me a hand.” The man grabbed a hand and pulled her over on the aerial.
“You are fucking crazy.” He told her quietly.
She followed him down and she was on the street again.
“I said evacuate.” Shouted Dorian.
“Don’t.” She bit back “I saved that boy’s life.”
“Sit.” Dorian ordered her. Aelin removed her mask and marched off to sit against the truck, rotating her shoulders to ease the pain.
Lysandra passed her a bottle of water “are you okay?”
Aelin nodded while drinking eagerly and watching while the rest of the team put the fire out.
Rowan opened the door of the engine and went to her “you are insane. And I think I almost lost it in there.”
“I am fine.” She told him quietly extending her hand to him.
He marched back in the engine, joining Lorcan.
“Do you still think women can’t do dangerous jobs?” He bit back. A part of him was a bit mad at Aelin. What she did had been insane. But he could not ignore the deep sense of pride he had in her. He was utterly in love with a super badass woman. He watched as the team slowly wrapped up their jobs. Dorian had called for a secondary search and they were getting out the burnt down house right now. Aelin still sitting on the front bumper of the truck grounded by Dorian.
He looked at her and smiled. She was covered in soot but she still looked stunning to him. Rowan turned his head and saw Lorcan still studying Elide while she went from victim to victim and checked them out with Lysandra.
“I think I am badly in love with Elide.” He said very, very quietly.
“You what?”
“You heard me, Whitethorn. Don’t make me say it twice.”
“Would it be so bad?” Asked Rowan, sitting beside him.
“I don’t want to fuck this up.”
“Well, don’t.” In that instant the door opened and the team climbed back in. He took a seat behind Aelin and with his hand extended he brushed her cheek and she took his hand gently “did you enjoy the show?”
“It was literally terrifying.”
“Main to all units. Car accident on Southside. Multiple vehicles involved.”
“Copy that main, east station is en route. Dispatch an ambulance on site. Our one is on its way to Orynth general.” Replied Aelin over the radio.
“Copy that east. We are sending an ambulance to assist.”
“Punch it, Nox.”
“You two boys are in for a ride. A nice fire and a car pile-up. We just need a chemical spillage and most of the fun is complete.”
“Don’t jink it,” said Asterin from behind.
They drove for a short distance and at the site Rowan looked out of the window and saw a few cars all smashed against each other.
Aelin and the team got off engine and truck and she patted at his window and blew him a kiss and ran away.
Seeing her in action he suddenly realised why she ate so much.
“Luca, you come with me we’ll take the upturned car.” She shouted at the youngster “Aedion, take the red one with Ansel and Borte. Everyone spread and take the other cars. Remember fuel leaks.”
Luca grabbed his tools and started trying to pry open the door.
Aelin kneeled down and checked the woman “I need a c-collar,” she screamed to the paramedics.
The woman’s head was bloodied, she checked the pulse through the cracked window and found it weak and she was not breathing.
Luca finally did manage to get the door open and together they pulled it away. Aelin sneaked into the front of the car and pulled the collar around the woman’s neck.
Lysandra and Elide were back from the hospital run and joined them ready and waiting for their patient.
“Aelin, you need to pull her out quickly.”
“I know,” snapped Aelin trying to cut the belt. Once the belt was free she realised the woman’s legs were stuck.
“Luca, I need spreaders. Right now.” She told him and the young man ran to the truck to grab the tool. He came back and with some acrobatics Aelin placed the tool in the area where the pedals were and started separating the metal. “As soon as she is free grab her.”
The metal slowly bent and freed the woman’s legs. “Go.” Luca took the woman and passed her in the care of the paramedics.
“Evangeline, grab an intubation kit and intubate the woman.”
The young woman nodded and Aelin stared with worry.
Once she was intubated Elide and Lysandra continued to do all possible to revive the woman. Aelin and Luca towered over them ready to help if needed.
She saw them use a defibrillator.
“Pushing epi.” She heard Elide say and Aelin knew from her emergency medical training that it was bad.
She paced nervously running a hand in her dirty hair. She took stock of the situation and noticed a few people out of the cars and being helped out and looked after by the other ambulances. Good at least the others did manage to save someone.
Aelin heard the long continuous beep of a flat line and realised the woman did not make it. Then she heard Lysandra calling it.
“Sorry, Aelin.”
Luca was at her side in an instant “cap, we did all we could.”
“Well, it was not enough.” She snapped while in her head she started going through all she could have done differently.
“Aelin,” Lysandra stood to face her friend “there was very little you could have done differently.” Knowing exactly where her friend’s mind had wandered off “She was in bad shape already. We did all we could, as Luca said.”
Dorian joined them a moment later “Aelin, come.”
They moved to the side “Get it out of the system quickly. Yes, you lost one person and it hurts, but I kept an eye on you and you haven’t done anything that I wouldn’t have done myself. You tried. But that was the car in worst shape.” He patted her shoulder “think about the boy you saved from the fire. Think about the second chance you gave him.”
Aelin nodded and walked away and joined her team in packing up all the gear once they were done.
Once she climbed back on the engine she looked at Rowan and his expression was full of worry for her. Gods, she just wanted to melt in his arms for ten minutes and shut down everything. She felt his hand sneak in the space between seat and door and try to grab hers. He didn’t say anything. He just held her hand.
They arrived back at the station not long after.
Aelin got off the engine and started removing her turnout gear.
“Aedion, take Borte and show her the checks to do to the engines after a call. I’ll take the equipment. Before heading to their duties they all ran to the bathrooms to remove the layers of soot and dirt from the two calls.
Once everyone had stored their gear Aelin hid in the room for equipment and began doing her checks and clean it. She needed some time alone.
Ten minutes later a head of silver hair peeked through the open door “hey,” he said quietly.
“Come in,” she said to him and Rowan took a step in and sat on the bench at her side.
“I am in awe.” His knuckles brushed her cheek “I had an idea of what you guys did, but seeing it for real. I was amazed. But also utterly terrified.”
“I could not help that woman, though.” She said sadly, placing a mask on the ground “she died.”
“Fireheart, I heard what Dorian said and I agree. I am sure you did all you could. Her car looked in pretty banged up state from my corner. If she survived it would have been a big damn miracle.”
“I know,” she let out a loose breath “I know.” Her head heavy against a jacket “it’s just not easy. I knew she was in bad conditions but I still wanted to save her.”
“Come here.” He pulled her to him “I have a piece of gossip for you.”
Her head whipped to him and he saw a smile finally appear.
“Lorcan admitted to me he thinks he is badly in love with Elide.”
Aelin’s hand went to her mouth in surprise “this is big.”
Rowan nodded “I don’t think he told her yet. He is just worried he will mess it up.”
“He’d better not. Elide has strong feelings for him as well. He breaks her heart and I will have his head.”
He nodded “I have been keeping an eye on him.”
“Good, now go back to the others and let me finish.”
He leaned forward and kissed her deeply. Aelin dropped what she had in her hands and once free they grabbed the back of his neck and pulled him closer to her and then on top of her as she leaned back on the bench. He caged her head between his arms and was about to kiss her again when dispatch alarm went off.
“Really?” She stood quickly and kisses him “stay at the station.” He nodded and she ran out. And he walked out slowly and joined Lorcan and both men stared at the vehicles leave the floor.
“Are they alway this busy? They have been back for forty minutes.”
Rowan sighed “Aelin mentioned this morning that with snow, things tend to get busier.” Then he had an idea “ever built a snowman?”
Lorcan rolled his eyes “yes, I was a kid once too, remember?”
“Get your coat back on and come with me.”
Once both men were ready with warm clothes Rowan walked outside to the front of the fire station near the entrance “Here.” Said Rowan pointing at the spot.
“Here what?”
“The snowman. To cheer them up. They had a stressful morning and probably it will not slow down.”
Lorcan tied his hair and started rolling the snow to form a ball for the body. Rowan smiled and joined him, preparing a second one. Once Lorcan had the bottom part ready, Rowan lifted the second one on top and both started fixing the body to give it an even shape. Then Rowan created a smaller ball for the head. Once done he lifted the final piece and took a step back to look at their work “not too bad.”
Lorcan removed his scarf and placed it around the snowman’s neck. Then Rowan ran back inside in Aelin’s office and grabbed the plastic fake firefighter hat he had won the day they did drills, got back and placed it on the snowman. Finally they gave him eyes and a mouth and Lorcan added some wooden sticks at the side so that they looked like arms.
Rowan looked around and then spotted something more he could add. He ran to a corner and picked up an abandoned tool.
“What is that?”
Rowan lifted the tool “I think Aelin called it an Halligan bar. The guys use it to pry open things.” He explained placing it near the sticky hand of the snowman “now he looks perfect.”
Once they were done the two men went back into the station and decided to prepare a meal for them “they must be famished.”
Lorcan nodded “I agree. Let’s prepare a nice meal.”
They were halfway through making lunch when they heard the trucks finally return and both ran outside, and only truck and engine appeared. The ambulance must have gone to the hospital.
Rowan’s eyes landed on a wet Aelin, her body wrapped in a few thick blankets. He ran to her and wrapped his arms around her frame. She was freezing and he felt her shiver and her teeth clattering “What happened?” His hands brushed her back quickly.
“We had two calls. Another fire and then a kid who fell in the water while skating on the frozen lake in a park. Aelin grabbed the kid but fell in when the rope dropped.” Explained Aedion.
As on pure instinct Rowan got into action. He took Aelin and dragged her to her quarters “we need to get you out of those wet clothes.”
She stood in front of him shaking and hugging the blankets against her body. Slowly he helped her remove all the layers until she was stark naked in front of him.
“Any..” teeth clattering “any excuse to get me naked.” Her tone was deep with tiredness.
He chuckled and went to the shower block to grab some towels and once back he begun drying her up.
“I’ll be back in a second.” Rowan disappeared once more and this time went to Aedion “do you have any spare clothes for Aelin?”
The man nodded and he was back a few minutes later with a pile of dry clothes in his hands “how is she doing?”
“Trying to warm her up.” He was about to move away when he turned to the man “what the heck happened?”
“Aelin wanted Borte to practice with the ropes in a real situation so she had Borte drop her in the ice crack to help the boy. The girl lost hold of the rope. It happened so fast that I was not quick enough to grab her,” he explained “She kept diving in in the cold water until she grabbed the boy. Only once he was safe she let us help her out.”
“You should have taken her to the hospital.” Rowan bit back annoyed.
“Don’t you think we tried?” Aedion matched him in tone “she is stubborn. She refused treatment.”
Rowan growled and grabbed the clothes “thanks for this.” And ran back to her quarters.
Aelin was sitting on her bed, the blankets still wrapped around her.
“I have dry clothes for you.”
“I have spare bra and knickers in my locker. The combination is your birthday.” Her speech was slow and he could feel her exhaustion.
Rowan gave her a smirk and rushed out once again and returning not long after with the garments.
“My underwear doesn’t scare you anymore?”
Rowan chuckled “we live together and I have seen enough of your daring lingerie not to be affected.”
Aelin slowly dressed up again and when she was done Rowan pulled back the blankets and pushed her legs under and finished drying her hair “now you relax, I’ll see if I can get some hot food for you.” A gentle kiss on her head.
Rowan then went to Lorcan and asked him to make something hot for her. She was still shivering hard and he was getting very nervous.
He was back in her quarters when Lysandra popped in with a bag in her hands “do you mind if I check on her?”
He stood “no, please.”
Lysandra took her temperature “still 33 degrees. It was 32 when we took her out.” She grabbed the transparent bag at her side “this is an IV of warm saline, it will help her and should bring her temperature up.”
“Lorcan is making something hot for her.”
Lysandra nodded “have water at her side as well.” And Rowan nodded “it might take a while before her temperature goes up again and she will be exhausted.”
The woman then hanged the IV bag against the edge of her closet and left.
Dispatch alarm went off again and Aelin made a move but Rowan stopped her “you are not going anywhere.”
“I-I am the cap-captain. I have to.” She was still shivering from the cold.
He ran to the apparatus floor “Aedion, Aelin is not coming. She is still cold.”
“I was not expecting her to. I told Dorian she is out for today.”
“Thank you.”
The man nodded.
“Stay safe, all of you.”
Lorcan met him halfway “I am making soup.”
Rowan patted his arm “thank you.”
“Lorcan is making you soup.” He announced as he got back to her “we’ll go home as soon as you are feeling warmer.”
“I am fine.”
“No,” he brushed his hand through her hair “you are still shivery. You eat something hot. Warm up and then we’ll see.”
“I should be with the guys.”
Rowan shook his head “Aedion alerted Dorian and told him you are out for the day.”
Aelin was about to reply but Lorcan joined them carrying a bowl with hot soup.
“How is our fearless leader doing?” He asked while placing the bowl on her night stand with a spoon on the side.
“Still feeling cold.”
“I hope you’ll like the soup. I made it the other night for Elide and she loved it.”
“Thank you, Lorcan.”
He gave her a quick salute and a tight smile and disappeared.
“Are we sure he is the same man?”
Rowan shrugged and grabbed the bowl but Aelin snatched it from his hands “don’t you dare and try to spoon feed me. Stop fussing, captain.”
“Fine.” He stood “I’ll leave you to it.” And left.
He reached Lorcan who was sitting on the sofa watching tv.
“You okay?” He sat beside him.
“Yeah. I put the food away until they are back.” He sighed “I thought we had it bad in our last mission but the guys don’t seem to have too much downtime either.”
“Yeah, today is pretty bad. I saw them on slow days when they have even time to play games. Today has been hell.”
“How’s Aelin doing?”
Rowan’s head snapped in his direction “this is the first time you finally call her with her name. It’s always the captain or your woman.”
Lorcan cleared his voice almost embarrassed “I am starting to like her.”
“Good because I am planning on keeping her around.”
“At least she is not whiny.”
Rowan sighed. He knew Lorcan never liked Lyria. He was the only person who had been the most vocal about his disagreement in him marrying the woman. His other friends were not her fans but had shown him support when he proposed and after. Lorcan had always made his opinion clear. He had told him in his face that he was marrying the wrong woman.
“Well, at least you approve of this one.”
Lorcan snorted “damn man, there is no comparison. Lyria used the marriage to try and change you into her puppet and when it did not work she lost it and became this jealous bitch.” He stood and paced “she came to me and begged me to invent an excuse to fire you.”
“I did not know.”
“I never told you because for some crazy reason you seemed attached to her. Truth is… the woman was toxic.” He stopped in front of Rowan “Essar told me she saw her a few times in a club with another man, while we were away.”
Rowan leaned back on the couch and closed his eyes “that I suspected, just as much as I suspected that the baby was not mine.” He confessed “before we deployed for the mission in which I had to go home for her funeral I found the divorce paper she had ready.”
“And you still grieved.”
“She was my wife.” He almost shouted “yes, she was not perfect but I loved her.”
“Loved her as much as you love Aelin? Because in all the time I have known you I have never seen you with a woman the way you are with Aelin.”
“No, not even close.”
“Would you marry her?”
Rowan only indulged on that thought once. It was far too early. They had just started to actually build their relationship. He was happy where they were right now.
“Not while I am still on active duty. I promised myself that next time I get married I will not be an absent husband again. And I want a family one day. I just need to hold on for a bit. Less than five years and the prison is over.”
“I can make a few calls and get you a full time position at pilot school. I know you have been having issue with the force recently but your skills are vital.”
Rowan shook his head “Thanks but no. Once I retire I will be out forever and I have another path in mind. I want to train to become a paramedic and work in a firehouse.”
“Well, I guess your time as nurse Whitethorn will come handy on your application.”
Rowan flipped him off and patted his leg “let me go and check on Aelin.”
He left Lorcan and joined Aelin and found her wrapped under the blankets with just her face peeking out. Her phone against the head of the bed. He smiled when he saw the bowl completely empty. Good.
“Hey you,” he sat her side and brushed her head “how are you feeling?”
“Not great and I can’t seem to shake the cold from my bones and I feel so tired.”
He lay down at her side and tucked her against his body and looked at the saline bag “the IV is almost finished.”
“You need skin to skin to keep me warm.”
He flipped her nose “we can’t do that here at the fire station so this is it for now.”
“I am going to write a review on the sexy nurse website that sent you and complain that I am not satisfied with the service.”
“Menace.”
“Are the guys still out?”
Rowan nodded “Lorcan prepared lunch for everyone and I hope they will have time to sit down and eat when they come back.”
Rowan nodded “what were you watching?” He asked as he noticed her phone playing a movie.
“I don’t know a random fantasy series Netflix recommended. I wasn’t paying much attention.”
He bent his legs and placed the phone against them and put an arm around her shoulder “well, let’s watch trash tv together.” He made sure she was all tucked in and cozy.
Eventually he heard the squad come back in the station, turned his head and noticed Aelin napping. He stood and joined the team at the front. They all looked exhausted and he hoped Lorcan’s meal would be enough to cheer them up.
“I saw our new frozen candidate.” Joked Brullo while shedding his turnout gear.
“Lorcan and I thought it would cheer you up guys.”
The tall dark-haired man joined them as well “I have loads of food ready. Come and eat before you get called again.”
The team cheered and scrambled into the kitchen. Aedion joined Rowan “how is she doing?”
“Warming up but tired. She is sleeping now.”
“How was the last call?” Asked Lorcan curious.
“Drunken driver. Crashed into a car with a family. The father is a goner and one of the kids is in bad shape.” Explained Manon reining in her rage.
Lorcan cursed savagely “the bastard.”
The conversation died after that, the topic too hard to even add anything else.
“Thank you for lunch, both of you,” said Elide, giving a smile to both Lorcan and Rowan.
“Honestly, it was all Lorcan, I was busy playing nurse.” Added Rowan.
In that moment Dorian popped in.
“Chief!” Shouted Ren “come have food.”
The chief sat down and joined the team “how are you all doing? You guys had a long day.”
No one said much “I went at the hospital and checked on the last family you saved from the drunken driver. The doctors are confident the boy will make a full recovery with time.”
Everyone sighed in relief.
He took a bite “how is Aelin doing?”
“She is in her bunk, sleeping under a pile of blankets. She is very tired and cold.” Rowan explained.
“Is she warming up now?”asked Lysandra “she was showing some very early stages of hypothermia. Her temperature was around 32 degree when we pulled her out.”
“She did not accept to be taken to the hospital.” Pointed out Aedion with a bit of annoyance in his voice.
“I heard that.” Continued Dorian “we should have pushed her. Aelin can be stubborn.”
A few snorts echoed in the room.
In that instant Aelin walked into the room with her hoodie on and a blanket around her.
“Hey,” Rowan stood and went to her “what are you doing here?”
“I didn’t want to be alone.” And she sat heavily in Rowan’s lap, never letting the blanket go.
“How are you feeling?”
“Hungry,” she croaked.
Everyone laughed and Rowan gave her his seat and placed a plate in front of her. Lysandra sneaked in and took her temperature very quickly “35.5 you are almost back to normal. Do you still feel cold?”
Aelin took a bite “I still don’t feel great.”
“That is normal. Your body went through a lot of shock.” Explained Elide.
“Captain Whitethorn, make sure she takes tomorrow off. This is an order.” Said Dorian staring at the other man.
“I am getting used to play nurse.”
Lorcan snorted “you can ask Lysandra or Elide to give you a ride in the ambulance, paramedic Whitethorn.” Rowan glared at him. That was something he had confessed only to Aelin and Lorcan.
“What is he talking about?” Asked Brullo curiously.
“I…” Rowan sighed “when I retire from the TAF in less than five years I want to retrain as a paramedic and work in a firehouse.”
“That is awesome,” shouted Asterin, sipping on her tea.
“You know that women will pretend to be sick to be treated by you?” Joked Ansel winking at him.
“Over my dead body.” Added Aelin while eating her food.
“If you need help to get into the program you let me know. I know it’s still a long time away, but, I work closely with the board and some of the trainers.” Added Dorian with a big smile.
Rowan nodded “thank you, sir. I will keep it in mind.”
“Are you sure you will be okay with leaving the airforce?” Asked Nox.
“I already did 12 years and signed up for five more a while ago. I will have no regrets when I retire.” He explained
Aedion was about to add something when dispatch alarm went off.
Dorian stood “come on guys. It’s one of those days.” Then he looked at Rowan “take her home.”
They all disappeared and Aelin sighed and drank more hot tea. Rowan and Lorcan tidied up the table and the kitchen.
*
It was an hour later when Rowan and Aelin got back home. He took her to the bedroom and she curled in bed hugging bird Rowan.
“Go under the blankets,” he said, pulling the duvet over her head “I can make you some tea.”
Aelin nodded “green tea, please?”
He kissed her head “yes, milady.”
Rowan came back five minutes later with a pot of tea and a cup “here you go.” Then he touched her forehead with his hand “you seem to get warmer.” Another kiss on her head “that is good.”
He climbed in bed and opened his laptop and started Netflix “Fancy watching something silly?”
“Can we watch a stupid movie that we can make fun of?”
Rowan chuckled and browsed a few titles “what do you think?” He pointed at a movie “this one seems quite silly.”
Aelin nodded and he placed the laptop on their legs, bird Rowan tucked between them and then his arm went around Aelin’s and pulled her to him.
“You got a day off tomorrow. We can go to the theatre if you feel like it.”
Aelin’s head snapped toward him and she smiled “I’d love to.” She grabbed her phone and showed him something “have you seen this play?”
Rowan had a look on her phone and nodded and her saddened face broke his heart “hey,” he took her hand “we can go and see it. The first time I went I was on my own and I had no one with whom to enjoy it with.” She gave him a smile “I want to go with you. Also, it was another production. So it won’t be the same play.”
Aelin grabbed bird Rowan “yes, captain.” She said in a funny voice “I want to go to the theatre with you.” She brushed the toy in Rowan’s face “are you my boyfriend, sexy man?”
Rowan took the toy “you are actually cuter than your owner.”
“You are a mean man.” She hit him with a pillow.
“What do you think, birdie? She is also violent.” He hugged the toy “you and I we need to stick together, partner. Such a tyrant.”
“Well, I’ll let you two make out and I’ll go and make out with the last few chocolate brownies left.” She got off the bed and walked away swaying her hips on purpose to taunt Rowan “they are better boyfriend material than the current one.”
Rowan growled and got off the bed and padded quickly to the kitchen lifted her in his arms and placed her on the counter, his arms at either side of her.
Aelin’s stare was mischievous and she leaned over for a kiss but he moved away and Aelin pulled him back to her “come here, Whitethorn. Stop annoying me.”
“I should have really read the terms and conditions of this relationship.” He teased her moving a bit closer, reducing the space between their bodies.
“You might eventually get out of the airforce, but you are not getting out of this.” She whispered against his lips. Then tensed for a brief second realising the enormity of what she had just said. Truth was she did not want let go of him. A part of her, one that she kept still hidden, desired that they would one day become more. And those thoughts terrified her. She had gone from hating the man, to wishing he would never leave her. It was crazy but her heart was telling that what she was feeling was real.
Rowan stared at her, his pine green eyes on her and an expression that she could not read. Terror seeping through her that she had gone too far and ruined the moment.
“Is that a promise?” His voice low, almost hopeful, his gaze never averting hers.
Aelin’s heart raced madly “if you want it.” She shook her head “I am sorry, it just came out.”
His hand joined hers on her knee and twinned his fingers to hers “did you mean it, though?”
Aelin slowly nodded and he smiled at her. His lips tugged up and the smile reached his eyes in a way that never fully happened before. The result left her breathless. Gods, he was even more stunning than usual. And she knew she had just seen a side of Rowan probably no one ever saw before. He smiled with others but she knew they were not full smiles. But this one… this one was something rare.
“And that’s all it matters for now.” His free hand brushed her face “there’s no hurry and I am loving this. Getting to know you. Spending time together. Spoiling you.”
“I am loving it too. So very much.” Her body inched closer “are you finally going to kiss me or you placed me on the counter to brag that you are taller than me?”
Rowan closed the distance and the kiss was everything but gentle. His hand shifted and grabbed her buttocks pulling her close while Aelin hands found their target on his back.
“We shouldn’t.” He pulled away “you need to rest.”
Aelin grabbed the collar of his t-shirt “you get me all wet and then back away? A nice energetic tumble in the sheets will get me all exhausted and ready for bed.”
Rowan did not answer, he just lifted her in his arms and her legs wrapped around his back and he carried her to the bedroom.
“Good boy.” She whispered.
And Rowan realised, while leaning forward to steal a kiss from her, that if he could do this for the rest of his existence, he’d be the happiest man of earth.
