Fateful Encounter...
Last month, at around April 10th, I decided to revisit an old project I started months prior which was to polish up a test sketch of a comic page about Lucy encountering Lumi in the dreamspace. And after slowly making progress on this, I'm finally finished with this!
I'm gonna leave some artist notes under the read more, but overall I'm super proud of how this turned out!! This is pretty much my first serious attempt at making comics in general so this has been a very interesting learning experience!
Artist notes: So this is what the original sketch for this whole thing was. It was just me scribbling out a scene I had in my head for Startrails that I wanted to put on paper:
This I'd say was made around 2020-2021 ish. At the time, I didn't really do much with it. Until several months ago, I thought of trying to redraw this page and expand upon it.
But my first attempt at doing this didn't quite lead anywhere. I barely got through the thumbnailing process and just gave up bc I lost motivation (and life/work stuff was Happening so yea I had to put this aside as I figured stuff out). Here's the first draft of the thumbnails:
It was just two pages at the time and was pretty simple. I left this project sitting in my files for a while until I one day just, started binging videos from Thestarfishface on YouTube, primarily her webcomic guide videos. And I decided I'd give this project another go.
It was here where I began making a second draft of the thumbnails and this was what I had to work with:
I wanted to experiment with the panels and get funky with the compositions this time around. The 2 page draft expanded to a 3 page thing. But I thought it would've been better if I added one more page at the end with Lucy waking up as a conclusion to wrap this whole thing together.
And in the middle of working on page 3, my friend had suggested to do a an impact frame page, which I hadn't considered during the thumbnailing, so 4 pages became 5. And this was the result!
I posted the pages as I finished them onto my deviantart so that's where a lot of my thoughts were journaled as I went along dfjsdh. To summarize my ramblings there, this project was a very fun (and a bit frustrating) learning experience! I'm hoping to keep practicing and improving my workflow, and hopefully one day make Startrails a full fledged webcomic :')
Additional ramblings:
The structure that Lucy finds Lumi in is inspired by an orrery.
For page 5, I initially didn't plan for much dialogue but as I drew it, it felt just a liiiitle bit empty, so I kinda just threw in some dialogue for Mira. But bc I was already in the inking process (and I just wanted to have this project completed), I didn't redo the page to even include Mira in it. So Mira's just out of frame sdfjskdh. If I had more time and energy to keep this up, I'd have made a revision of the page so I could include her.
This experience has taught me that I could seriously work on my rendering process a bit more, and that my layer management is just atrocious sdkfjksdfh
This has also taught me that while Medibang has the tools needed for me to draw these pages just fine, it also lacks some stuff that I personally need if I were to do a longer project like this. So I'll be experimenting with CSP next!
The dialogue throughout this whole thing wasn't all that planned out- I really just stuck close to what the initial doodle had which probably wasn't the best idea bc I just have like, 2 pages of Lucy's awkward sounding dialogue aaaa. I might do something a bit more dialogue heavy to help improve this skill next time.
Anyway, thank you for reading through my 1 am ramblings on this little project of mine shdkjhks

I'll probably be using the next few somethings refining her design to have something I'd be kinda happy to draw with as I get try again to get used to drawing on this tablet—I bit the bullet and got version 3 upgrades for CSP Pro while sale—mostly for the ease of font usage--you can finally search for them instead of having to scroll down dozens of lists—still no option to make actually interface bigger? I don't relish having to squint all the time. Can't I zoom into the font list or something. This is the version for desktop. As for the Android version:
I thought having the ability 2 draw on da go would up my productivity, at the past months of doing nothing but just using the tablet to read stuff, I'm mostly marveling at anyone can draw anything on these things. I spent the first two drawing seething with frustration constantly encountering stuff like "air commands" (apparently I don't have right S Pen) and trying to work out why every two seconds it would switch color pallet to white/erase; after cursing the damn thing it seems like an issue with the pen dropper command--a potentially useful tool except turning off finger mode does not affect its ability to somehow detect the flat skin of my drawing hand but still won't detect the pressure of the stylus itself? ie it's fucking useless! Also, why doesn't CSP have a flip horizontal shortcut on the canvas itself? Yes, I'm already using Simple Mode. What is this! Just put a flip button there somewhere or at least give me the option to put it there.
I've been trying other art programs some time back and I've encountered some problems with either accessibilty, features or just ads.
Skill issue, yeah, and brother I have issues with these skills.
How about this, then. I was thinking that I've gone this long without ever saying her name that it has to be a big deal when I finally do it. Meanwhile I wanna see if anyone can guess it. I'm gonna give ten American dollaridos via Paypal to anyone who can guess her name AND the (male, that's a clue right there!) Robot Master that inspired her. Offer open until April 3 or when I finally namedrop her, which is gonna happen in a tablet test doodle comic, whichever comes first. Really, probably the April deadline. I was gonna say end of March/start of April but people might think I'm joking because of April Fools. I'm not. Mostly I'd be impressed if anyone has cared enough to follow along and try.

My first test drawing.. er, doodle/sketch/drawing of clip studio paint on my iPad as I was testing out the app to see how it was in comparison to procreate.
And boy howdy, I was super confused but then again, I've only been using Procreate as my first digital drawing app for the past 3 or 4 years so it's sort of a given that I would be slightly confused naturally but it was fun to experiment. All in all, it was all about the same features, just in different areas.. I just had to do a LOT of trials and errors (and undos) while I figured it all out.
I wanted to do a time lapse but then I realized I needed to start recording it BEFORE I started drawing.. whoops.. oh well. Not sure I'll ever switch completely to CSP but I did really like how satisfying the pencil brush felt to draw with.. it felt almost realistic in a way, if that makes sense.

Big Art Dump part three.
The rest is under the read more. Be warned: there's a lot.
^^^ Unfinished drawing of my inkling from Splatoon 2, dated May 24 2021.
Some recent BotW / TotK Links. First one is Dec 14 2023. Second one is much older, Jan 20 2022. thought it was interesting to compare the two. I was trying vastly different things.
unfinished Kasane Teto, heavily based on KIRA's song, "i DO what i WANT." I remember wanting to cover that song with Teto once I got ahold of her SynthV voicebank.
dated April 11 2023
Oh yeah. I drew Wapeach.
dated December 2 2023
My personal redesign of Betilla with her beautiful perfect son.
Dated November 11 2023
We never see Rayman use his hood, other than Laserhawk.
dated November 7 2023
A Barbara I ended up not liking enough to finish. I ended up drawing her with a different style.
More Barbara. I was trying to figure out how I wanted to draw her.
I completely forgot about drawing this. It was saved as a .clip (as well as .psd), so I think I was testing out a trial for CSP. What the hell.
I guess I wanted to see if I could draw in a stereotypical anime style???
Marx doodles
Magolor doodles
I don't ship a lot of things. I don't even know if I ship this specifically. I just thought of this and thought it was funny.
Ramon. Dated Oct 19 2023. I thought he was more funny, if anything. So over-the-top edgy, like a parody.
I reeeaaally didn't wanna draw the guns.
I had this idea for a pumpkin-themed girl that I would come back to every once in a while. 2nd one is Oct 27 2020.
More pumpkin girl. First one is Feb 13 2021.
Cyclops cyborg character named "Illumina" who I've mentioned briefly before. They're kind of like a derivative of a different character, lovingly named Hell Miku.
Ninomae Ina'nis as Agent 4. She streamed Splatoon 2 at some point. Dated January 25 2021
Inugami Korone drawn in two different styles, dated January 29 2022.
Some old OCs who were very precious to me growing up.
I redrew them for fun. Left sword guy is Kris. Right Ponytail girl is Veronica. Girl in the distance is Arrow. Big goddess lady is Soleil.
dated April 23 2022
Another Kris. Dated September 1 2020
Okay, fine. I made two versions of the "I think we're gonna have to kill this guy" meme. This was a combination I thought would be funnier, but decided to post the other one instead. but i still also like this one.
And finally...
I have a Splatoon OC named Ray. This has nothing to do with my current hyperfixation on Rayman. It's a coincidence, I swear.
(I'm not changing his name. I just thought of the idea for this comic and thought it was funny.)

Grab Bag Doodles
Alright, brief story time: so for the past couple of months now, my laptop has been crashing randomly. Obviously, that’s not something I can deal with if I’m drawing or otherwise working on other projects. It was getting so bad that I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to boot it again, and I just can’t afford to lose what was on there. So I got a replacement, so I could transfer everything before the old one stopped working completely.
On the bright side, aside from crashing several times during the transfer process, I was able to get all of my files moved over, including most of my programs, so I managed not to lose anything important. On the bad side, reinstalling everything means that a lot of my settings were lost, so I had to remake my workspace on CSP, and there are some programs that just don’t work anymore because this new one uses Windows 11 (so, no more Rhythm Heaven remixes from me unless I start up the old one again and pray that it doesn’t crash while I’m working).
These doodles are from me trying to get all my settings back together.
Right now, everything feels pretty good again, so now I’m pretty much where I was before. Hopefully I’ll be able to open the follower milestone requests soon. Till then, my notes:
1) Inking Test. I decided to test out my brush settings by trying to line the Vtubesona sketch I posted a bit ago. It wasn’t lined with the intention of actually rigging this, but I do really like some of the ideas in this one. I feel so close to having a final design.
2-3) More Android and Shapeshifter designs. I don’t really understand what I did differently, but I really like Android’s face in this one. It’s cuter~ I also ditched their goggles because their head area was starting to become a huge mess of *things*. It just didn’t work when the rest of the body is pretty plain by comparison. Not much to say about Shapeshifter. I think the twin tails are cute~ I also sketched a “buffed” version, but I’ll post that one another time.
4-5) More NSR Crossing. Just some quick doodles. I did a couple of the other megastars too, but I did them all without reference, so I don’t want to post ‘em until they’re a little more accurate.
6) Kliff doodles. Was originally gonna be another full spread, but I stopped at just 2. What if NSR was completely the same, but Kliff was a puppy?
7) 1010 Iterations Guide. Just something I made to make sense of how I see the 1010 “family tree” as it were. This guide applies to both my general headcanons and my AUs.
8) Galeem doodle. Haven’t drawn this asshole in a while. I don’t use them often, but I wanted to test using CSP’s models and poses function since I restarted. I think it can be very useful for blocking out a pose, but somehow it feels more like “cheating” to use them, than it does when I just use a photo reference, so I try to use them sparingly.

OH YEAH, I FORGOT TO SHARE SOMETHING I DID WHILE TESTING OUT CSP
SAY HELLO TO PANNA TARTT
Daughter of the owners of Cafe Suzette, she is named after panna cotta (the dessert), and YES, I decided to steal Sasha Tartt’s surname (our lead from the Antagonist’s Pet, as she is ALSO a minor character that ends up crashing the canon).
Basically, I decided YOU KNOW WHAT’S FUCKING FUNNY?!?!
MEKAKURE.
Haven’t done one of these characters yet, and even FUNNIER, is the fact that this is a typical trait in dating sims of any kind with their protags, as means of letting the player self-insert. SO THERE WE FUCKING GO. XD
Here’s the picrew that helped finalize her design before I doodled it, since I couldn’t find any that had the bangs covering BOTH eyes. (have fun)
This will be the gal who’s thrown at Bakarina, now only time will tell if she ends up in the harem, ends up WITH the harem, or if the harem even fucking exists.
This is a mess waiting to happen, and I can’t wait to get to it in the days nearing April 1st.

hello!! i’ve always been a traditional artist, but i just recently got my first tablet for drawing and i’m really excited to try my hand at digital art!! i was wondering what art program you use and if you had any tips for someone just starting out with digital art? feel free to ignore if you don’t, i’m just a big fan of your art and i LOVE your little kiri doodles they really give me life <3
oh shit!!! first of all, thank u so so much!!!!! i'm pretty new at all this too, so i'm still kinda learning the ropes myself dkdjdkf digital art is a beast compared to traditional, but it's a lot of fun ;v;
second of all: i use procreate! i've heard lots of good things about clip studio paint tho--they have like 3D models which is sexy bc proportions, yknow? but i'm good with just procreate for now, it's less overwhelming than CSP looks (imo at least)!
AS FOR TIPS!! let's seeeee 🤔🤔
1. try all the brushes and mess with all the brush settings!!! u can reset and duplicate them all u want, u can also download new ones allegedly (idk i never tried KDJDJDJDJ), but definitely test them and find one that works for you! get the right flow & pressure that makes YOU feel in control of the brush. put that brush in its place. make that brush your bi-
2. use references! u probably already know this from traditional art, BUT MAN!!! i'm always looking stuff up on my phone so i can stare at a thing while i draw it. the number one take away is to get the shape of the thing you're trying to draw so that, one day, you won't need a ref anymore. ur third eye will open. u will know that a cat is just a couple of circles and some triangles 👁️👄👁️
3. COLOR PALLETTES!!! procreate is cool bc if i find a pretty picture with a dope color scheme i can turn it into a pallette. i am not good at color theory or whatev--especially with digital art--so it's easier for me to just use a pallette. it gives me colors i kNOW look snazzy together and i won't have to sit and question my life choices when i look back at a fully painted piece in a different light.
4. unfortunately, digital art will make u feel like you're relearning how to draw all over again, so really...it just takes time and practice! at first i took a lot of requests and that helped me SO MUCH. i also really like to find those expression memes and just practice with those on my own time? that helps too. draw as much as possible and don't put a lot of pressure on yourself. if a thing is too complicated, simplify it! thats why i do a lot of simple chibi-like drawings. gotta build up to the hard stuff 😤
anyways skdkdkdjf sorry for the basic advice, but i hope it helps a little!! good luck on your digital art journey, i'm rooting for u!!!
#asks#long post#i'm on mobile otherwise i'd slap a read more on this ;v;#but man i am but a worm#very humbled by the fact that u would ask me for advice#highkey made my week#thank you so much 💖💗💖💗💖#if u see a typo no u dont#its past my bedtime
