I've been waiting a long time for today... September gets harder and harder each year as I attempt to celebrate my father's birthday while coping with the fact that I lost him and more than half of my family in one day. For a long time I was frustrated that he didn't take better care of himself. I've moved past that but I still haven't figured out how to deal with my feelings of hurt that we didn't have enough time together. Or the guilt of not being able to give him the memorial that he deserved. Instead I've done everything possible to distract myself from this reality alright. For 10 years I've refused to accept his passing, let alone confront the baggage that came with that. But this year I finally gave myself permission to grieve. And though the process has been cathartic, most days I still try to avoid it out of habit. Today I chose to grow. I grabbed my squad and gave my Daddy the home going he should've been had. We drove to the burial site of my grandmother and uncle (my father's mother and brother), and sprinkled some of his ashes over her grave. We laid out a spread, sipped Cognac, and danced while Johnny "Guitar" Watson serenaded us. We stayed for hours, just chillin with my ancestors. And before we left we wiped the mud off their headstone, placed flowers in the vase, and promised to visit again soon.
