It was such a good read! I'm looking forward to the sequel! This book is definitely an example of "sometimes popular books are popular for a reason" (it worked out that way for me, at least)

October 2023 wrapup

October was a bit of a mixed bag - some great reads, some I had higher hopes for, and some that I feel pretty indifferent about. Overall I'm pretty happy with the month, though.

I really wish, after all these years, @staff would make it possible to change the secondary blog to the primary status. I have been inactive on my primary blog for years and have no intention of ever posting there again. Yet whenever I follow somebody or send an ask, they will hardly be able to realize that it is Ally from "manuscripts-dontburn" rather than somebody from "bollymusings". And I am tired of writing it everywhere.

This tag is really interested. And I also struggle with the “buying more than I read” and “giving away”. 

For the first problem, I started a “book credit score” system early last year and, so far, it has worked really well. For reading a physical book, I award myself 1/2 credit, for an ebook or audiobook 1/4 credit. Buying a new book sets me back 1 credit. It is fun and helps to keep the book byuing low. Oh, rereads of physical books get me 1/4 point and 0 for ebooks/audiobooks (my goals it to not accumulate so many physical books).

For the second one, I am relatively good at deciding I do not want to keep a certain book, but I really struggle with the “where to” in the giving away part. I have some (English) subscription box special editions and hardcovers which are in excellent condition and it feels like a waste to put them in the free library. But selling them is a lot of work and they often don’t sell well in Germany. 

However, just last night, I checked on one of those websites that buy used books/CDs, ... and actually found some good deals (I am not giving them a like new hardcover for 15 Cents!). Tomorrow, I will bring 12 books to the post office and (hopefully) will get 46.50 Euro for them. Which is quite good, as these shops go (do not look at their re-sell prices, though).

Also: do not feel ashamed of the (unread) books you own. What you do with your space and money is totally your own decision!

Hey, @manuscripts-dontburn, I'm glad I got the right person (eventually, lol)!

I'm so happy to find another lover of Laura Wood's writing on Tumblr, they're rare around here. If I may recommend another of her books, it would be A Snowfall of Silver - it's set in the same universe as Sky Painted Gold, but a few years later. It follows the adventures of Lou's younger sister Freya and is nearly as delicious and heartwarming as Sky. Of course, if this is already on your TBR, feel free to disregard the above.

Your thoughts about Daughter of the Moon Goddess are interesting, however, I guess you and I will have to agree to disagree about this - I just couldn't get invested in many of the characters besides Xingyin. To each their own, though - I'm glad you enjoyed it.

And congratulations again on your reading achievements - 163 books is a mighty feat.

This book is everything! I’m still trying to find the words to review it properly, but Marske has nailed her debut and anyone who likes historical fantasy, magic and mystery, and characters to fall (and maybe die) for should add this to their TBR. (And the way Marske writes truly terrible people? And magical houses? Brilliant too.) I read it in two days and considered coming late to work just so I could finish it.
