In defence of Obi-Wan Kenobi

I recently got into Star Wars and though I'm not one of its biggest fans, i do like the world building, the characters and incredible stories of their adventures to an extent. After watching the prequels, i got hooked with the charcters of Obi-Wan and Anakin Skywalker. I found their story arc really interesting. And i can say now that Obi-Wan is my favorite character in Star Wars.

So after i realize this, i come here on Tumblr, searching up 'Obi Wan Kenobi'. And what do i see? Along with bunch of memes, gifs, fics etc, i see hate posts saying that 'Obi Wan was abusing Anakin', 'He's the worst master in the Jedi Council', 'He didnt care about his so-called 'brother'', 'He's what made Anakin lose trust in the Jedi code and fall to the dark side' etc etc etc. And boy was i surprised😬

Now, i know, by no means is Obi Wan perfect. He had his own set of flaws that result in unfavorable consequences. But going so far as to calling him an 'abuser' is a bit too much, dont you think?

Obi-Wan was a strict follower of the jedi code. He had these set of rules in his life that he followed diligently. He may not have been a perfect person, but he was a 'Perfect Jedi'. The council saw this and trusted him with various huge responsibilities. He was recognized not only as a man of honor and virtue, but also as one of the most skilled and dedicated warriors the galaxy had ever seen.

Anakin was a bit older compared to other younglings when he became a part of the Jedi. To be a jedi, a person has to let go of attachments, fear, hatred, greed and anger. Jedi saw these factors as weaknesses and an easy way to the dark side. And Anakin was not good at lettting go of them very easily. The older he grew, the more he succumbed to it. It is his character flaw, but ultimately that made him who he was. A man who cared for the people closest to him. A man who feared losing them. A man who would do anything to protect them. A man who would go on a vengeful spree because he couldn't handle losing them. His mother, Padme and you might not believe it, but even Obi-Wan is a part of that small group of people who Anakin kept close to his heart.

Why Obi-Wan though? Lets deep dive a bit, shall we?

Yes, Obi-Wan in Phantom Menace did call Anakin a 'Pathetic Lifeform'. He didn't seem to care about the boy as much. He only agreed to train Anakin because his own master, Qui-Gon, asked him to while taking his last breath. And who is Obi-Wan if not a man who keeps his promises.

In Attack of the Clones, you see some friction between the master and apprentice. Anakin did not heed to Obi-Wan's words like Obi-Wan himself had heeded to Qui-Gon's. Anakin, though deemed as the chosen one, didn't believe in following all the rules and regulations of the Jedi. He challenged his master's decisions at times. He blamed Obi-Wan for holding him back. He blamed Obi-Wan for his mother's death. The only reason he even thought of helping Obi-Wan from the arena is because Padme insisted.

And what about Obi-Wan as a master? I'd like to say that he wasn't very attuned to Anakin's emotions. He merely saw him a kid who disobeys orders and does things out of impulse. He tried to be assertive with his apprentice, but it didn't work. And it wouldn't because unlike other Jedi, Anakin was driven by emotions and his heart. Obi-Wan should've used a better tactic here. I'd say that he merely saw him as an apprentice that he cared about but he didnt try his fullest to understand Anakin as a person, give him love and affection which is what Anakin craves. It was merely maintained to be a Master-Apprentice relationship.

But by Revenge of the Sith, things change. Anakin becomes a Jedi Knight and fights alongside Obi-Wan in the Clone Wars. The trust and companionship between them grows. Obi-Wan starts to see Anakin as a reliable warrior and begins to see him a equal while Anakin starts to understand Obi-Wan more and comes to trust and care more for his former master. The star fighter scene at the beginning of ROTS where Obi-Wan and Anakin move in sync, signifies their strong friendship, as described by George Lucas himself. And Anakin refusing to leave behind Obi-Wan when the chancellor asks him to, shows that Anakin had included Obi-Wan in the group of people he loves and wants to protect.

So why does Obi-Wan not request the council to reconsider their decision on making Anakin a master in the Jedi council? In the movie, he doesnt even speak up during the council meeting. He just agrees to what the council says. Did he still not consider Anakin ready to be a Jedi Master? I don't think so. When he was about to leave for Utapau, he reassures Anakin and asks him to be patient. He believed that the council just needs more time to decide on the matter on making Anakin a master in the council. And that is why he chose to say nothing when the council rejected Anakin.

With the war going on, Obi-Wan got too busy to notice Anakin's excessive interaction with Palpatine. He does warn Anakin that the chancellor was not to he trusted. But he does not go out of his way to stop Anakin from meeting him or understand why Anakin was so adamant about Palpatine being a good man. One main reason is that Anakin was not his padawan anymore. He is a Jedi Knight who can make his own decisions and act on his own. But as a friend, maybe Obi-Wan could've checked up on what's exactly happening behind closed doors between his former apprentice and the 'not-to-be-trusted' chancellor.

And everything goes downhill from there.

Anakin starts to mistrust the council, the jedi and the Jedi code. He starts looking at them as his enemies. He feels unappreciated and looked down upon by them. He had almost always felt out-of-place among the Jedi and he then starts to pull away. Not just from the Jedi but also from his former master, Obi Wan. Palpatine had successfully manipulated him to turn to the dark side, reassuring that through the dark force, Anakin can save his wife, which ultimately was the final nail in the coffin.

Obi-Wan during his battle with Anakin says that he failed him. This shows that the Jedi understood that he didn't do enough from his side to stop Anakin from falling to the dark side. You can see the grief in his eyes as he says it. He must have felt that he should've tried harder to understand Anakin, should've tried harder to make Anakin understand, should've interfered when Palpatine was manipulating Anakin to the dark side, should've listened to Anakin when he said he's having nightmares about his mother dying, should've been there for him........ But alas, its too late

So, is he responsible for Anakin falling to the dark side? Partially. Obi-Wan should've done more to help Anakin with his emotions and his pain. Did he completely ignore Anakin? No. He was there to advice Anakin when needed (though his advices have not always been right.*cough* Telling Anakin to ignore the nightmares about his mother *cough*). He kept Padme's and Anakin's relationship a secret, because he cared about Anakin and didn't want the council doing anything awful as kicking Anakin out. He assured Anakin that he was proud of him before he left for Utapau. He had firm belief in Anakin's talents, power and loyalty.

So, coming to the ultimate question? Did Obi-Wan abuse Anakin emotionally? Absolutely not. Was he the greatest master Anakin would've ever had? Not really. Was Qui-Gon a better a master to Anakin compared to Obi-Wan? Yes. Obi-Wan's flaw when it came to Anakin was that he was ignorant. Ignorant to Anakin's growing mistrust towards the Jedi and the code. Ignorant towards Anakin's emotions. And he didn't try harder to stand by Anakin's side.

But blaming everything on him as if Anakin didnt decide his own fate is plain stupid. Yes, Obi-Wan was a small part of the problem, but he wasn't exclusively the only one. So its really weird to me that there are haters who glorify Anakin's turn to the dark side, treating it like it wasn't Anakin's decision in the end and shit on Obi-Wan and making it seem like it was his and his fault alone🙄

Also, unrelated but, i saw a post saying that Obi-Wan is the Mary Sue of Star Wars and that they hate him for it? Like???? Lemme break that down.

'Obi-Wan is skilled in everything'- He trained hard for it, actually. He is one of a few Jedi that have low midi-chlorian count. He wasn't gifted and things didn't come to him naturally. He had to work for it. He can use a blaster in ROTS? Hell yes he can! He was the general in command for thousands of troops during the clone wars for years. There is simply no way he didn't learn how to use them, lmao!

'Everyone loves him'- How can anyone not? Except for the Siths and the seperatists who despised him for his skills and his strength as a warrior. He is not only a dedicated Jedi master and the war general but also known to have followed the jedi code and never strayed from his values and beliefs. He's also a smooth talker and sassy when he wants to be😏

'He has no flaws'- go read the entire essay again.

'He doesn't face any consequences'- Are you talking about the same Obi-Wan Kenobi that we all know? His mistakes partially lead to him losing Anakin. He had also sneaked into Padme's ship, which resulted in her getting choked out by Anakin leading to her eventual death. He blames himself for these. So he decides to sacrifice his whole life to guard Luke, because he wants to make things right and he believed Luke was his way to redemption.

No, Obi-Wan wasn't a perfect man. He could've done a lot of things differently. But this overwhelming bias towards Anakin and a complete lack of empathy for Obi-Wan is honestly strange and doesn't make a lot of sense. You're opinion is opinion, of course, but take some time to think about it. Maybe you'll change you're mind.

Complete my assignments and projects? No. Write a whole ass essay on a fictional character? A resounding YES!!!!😅😅😅 I wanted to write this for some time now and i finally got down to doing it today. Writing this helped me get a better hang on Obi-Wan as a person and reminded me why i really like his character. Hope you guys enjoyed it too. i related to effy an unhealthy amount when i was only 13 when i first watched it, but at the time i wasnt doing drugs, homewrecking, doing anything that young lol. however i was extremely mentally ill but undiagnosed, and so confused but i found solace in effys character because of how similar i felt to her. flashforward to being 20 now and im a nic addict/borderline drug and alcohol addict that forgets to take my prescribed antidepressants and antipsychotics. i cant tell you how many events of effys life have mirrored mine now 7 years later, both the pretty but mostly the ugly. it all feels like a joke to me, and the thing is of course it wasnt effy the fictional character that did this to me, it was the fact that i was genetically and epically set up to do this to me for as long as i existed and i saw myself in her too young. everyone ive ever met and started to befriend has fallen in love with me, has found me beautiful, and then seen my flaws and hated me even if they didnt tell me to my face. ive been a horrible friend and partner and im flighty and unreliable and destructive. i never saw effy, or a person like effy, find a happy ending and im afraid even when im at my manic highs i will never find a lasting happiness and will always accidentally self sabotage until i die. what im trying to ask is, how can i save me? i know its dumb to ask a random tumblr user but ive been following this blog since i was 13-14 and since you know effy through and through, you might know a little about me. its a long shot. (i’d also like to say this isnt a cry for help and im safe/not actively suicidal so i dont want you to feel like theres any pressure like that, but i did use this ask box as a free therapy session.)

I'm a bit biased, but I don't think there's anything wrong with asking a random Tumblr user at all. I'm happy to be a free therapy session when you need one, and I'm really touched that you've trusted me with your thoughts and feelings for so long. Hopefully I've been some help over the years 😆

Coping with mental illness can be really, really hard, but the good news is that with the right tools and support system, you can absolutely recover. It sounds like you already have a psychiatrist in your life, which is a great start. If you've having trouble remembering to take your medication, it might help to set calendar reminders on your phone, set up text prompts to remind you to take your pills, to link taking your pills with something else you do every day (like brushing your teeth or eating breakfast), or to reward yourself for taking your medication (for example, putting a piece of candy in your pill box that you can eat after taking your pill).

If you don't have one already, a therapist might also be a good idea. It can take a while to find the right therapist for you, so schedule a few appointments and see which therapist you "click" with. A therapist can help you work through any reluctance you might have towards taking you medications, as well as helping you come up with day to day strategies that help you achieve your goals and helping you work through the beliefs that you hold about yourself and the world that may be holding you back.

Moving on to talking about addiction for a bit. I strongly believe that addiction doesn't come from some type of inherent lack of willpower or moral failing, or even really the drug itself. It's the need to escape reality. And that's actually supported by scientific literature; most famously, the Rat Park experiment by Bruce K Alexander. Practically, we've seen that same thing in the aftermath of Portugal's decision to decriminalize all drugs. They took the money they were using to keep drug users in prison, and instead invested that money into reconnecting people who struggle with addiction to society. Their goal was to make sure that every person who struggles with addiction has a reason to get up in the morning and has a support system within the wider society. And it actually worked- injection drug use is down 50%, overdoses and HIV infections have massively decreased, and rates of addiction decreased as well. It's much easier to quit when you have something motivating you to keep going.

Why am I telling you all of this? I guess what I'm trying to get at is in order to recover from addiction, I think first people need to understand what the reality is that they're trying to escape. What can be done about those issues? Who's in your corner trying to support you, even if they're not doing the best job at it? Where else can you get the social support you might need? What are you passionate about? What would make it feel worth it to get up in the morning? I think instead of focusing on the drugs, or the alcohol, or the cigarettes, maybe we should focus on solving the root problems that make those attractive options. That's one of the reasons a therapist is a really good idea; they can help you figure out what those root problems are, and provide resources and tools to help you fix those problems.

In terms of practical, do it yourself advice for dealing with addiction, there are a couple things you might try. I did a whole post on evidence-based ways to set goals and follow through on them here, so I won't rehash it in this post, but basically:

Try to set goals that are specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time bound. For you, this might be something like "My goal is to have only one drink a day (measurable and achievable) for week (time bound) so that I can be more reliable for my friends (relevant)".

Instead of trying to quit something, replace it with something else. For example, "when I feel like smoking, I'm going to do ten minutes of learning Korean instead". Learning something new is easier and more exciting, and so new habits are easier to maintain that breaking old ones. Find a new hobby that you've always wanted to do or that's exciting to you, and try to focus your energies on that to distract yourself.

Identify any obstacles (such as environmental triggers) that you might run into, and develop contingency plans for working around them. This might be something like, "when I drink coffee in the morning, I want to smoke, so I'm going to switch to tea instead." If you can, get rid of all environmental triggers that might remind you of your addiction or trigger a craving.

Get someone else involved. Tell a friend about your goal and have them check up on you. Your fear of disappointing them will help you stay on track.

Put money on the line. Give money to a friend with the understanding that you'll get it back at a set date if you've achieved the goal you set. Tell your friend that if you fail, they should donate the money to a group or cause you really hate.

Write down the reasons you want to quit, and put them somewhere you know you'll see them. Whenever you want to engage in an addiction behavior, read through that list first.

For bonus points, add to that list your contingency plan for when you want to engage in an addiction behavior. These may include ways to redirect your attention or distract yourself until the craving passes.

76% of people who wrote down their goals, actions and provided weekly progress to a friend successfully achieved their goals.

You might also try an addiction recovery app, such as these, or doing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy worksheets on your own if you can't access a therapist right now.

There are also some things you can try in order to improve your mood. As much as I hate that this is true, consistent exercise has a huge impact on mood. If you can, try taking a 20 minute walk outside, 3 times a week. Other (boring) things, like making sure you're getting 7-9 hours of sleep a night and eating regularly, can also make a big difference in mood. Some of you might know that I'm a little bit obsessed with the free Coursera class "The Science of Well-Being". It has a lot of great evidence-based tips and tricks for how to build happiness, and I highly recommend it if you're trying to live a happier life. These include things like journaling, meditating, noting things that you're grateful for, helping other people, and having regular social interactions.

Finally, a few philosophical thoughts. One of the Four Noble Truths in Buddhism is dukkha. Basically, this is the idea that suffering is an innate characteristic of existence in our world. When I was younger, I never liked this concept, but I think now I kind of get it. It's impossible to be happy 100% of the time, and that shouldn't be our goal. Suffering is the comparison by which our lives gain meaning. But we can do our best to minimize our suffering and the suffering of others, and ride the wave of suffering when it does come. And each time we ride that wave, we can learn techniques to manage it a little bit better, and to make it easier the next time. We will sometimes sabotage ourselves out of fear, but we can learn how to do it less frequently and for the consequences to be less dire. We can learn how to forgive ourselves for our flaws and what we've done in the past, and learn from those mistakes so we don't do them again in the future. It's also okay to backslide, to struggle even after you've made progress. You're never back where you started, because you've always learned more and experienced more.

I know I've thrown kind of a lot at you in this post, and I don't expect you to try all of it or for all of it to work, but hopefully something in there is helpful to you. You can get through this. You can save yourself, but please, also remember to let others help save you. You don't need to do this on your own. And just like I have been since you were 13, I'm always here to give a free therapy session and to lend my support ❤️❤️❤️

(part 2). what ever you do do not trust tiktok. i’d say literally like a third of the information is false. and maybe stay off the shifting tag on tumblr too because it can be really unmotivating and also don’t watch odds 1 out video on shifting or anthony padeliias (really any big youtuber). it really pisses me off when people hate on shifters without doing any research in the first place. speaking of research google isn’t always reliable because it likes to call shifting lucid dreaming. which again, it is not. when people say things on tiktok like “they miss me”, that is false because there has been a clone in your dr all their life taking your place, you’re just moving your consciousness there when you want. shimmey shay is a great youtuber for shifting. tonight there’s also a super blood moon and lunar eclipse, which is like really good for shifting because it raises your vibrations. it is not impossible to shift on your first try, it’s just a bit more rare. i think the key to shifting is having a good mindset (like affirmations such as “ive already shifted”) and understanding that everyone’s journey is different. sorry for ranting sm lmao -dream anon

Hey! so I've been crushing on this girl for about 3 years, and I really wanna tell her I like her and ask her out but I'm terrified of damaging/ losing our 10 years of friendship :-( others have asked if we are dating because we are so close and she always denies it and makes it clear that we are just platonic friends. However, 5 months ago she messaged someone and told them that she liked me :o (She's also openly Bi) should I ask her out and risk losing everything or keep my feelings to myself?

just a disclaimer: i dont know how good/useful my advice will be because ive had positive experiences when i confessed to my crushes so it might differ !!

first of all, i think youre amazing?? the fact that youve had a crush on her for THREE years is ??? wrow u r braver than any us marine and i think its sweet youve liked her for so long!! also!! its cool that you guys have been friends for TEN?? years???? and i can see why youre worried about confessing!!

i think the reason she denies it when ppl ask is bc well. its not true so its not like she can say Yeah We’re Dating dhhdjdh BUt it might also be for your sake?? mayhaps she doesnt want to make you uncomfortable bc she doesnt know how you feel!! so id say dont take to heart too much!

now for the most important part: confessing. i know its fuCKing scary to confess to someone, because you dont know how the other person will react but i believe that confessing is better than not doing anything at all

for me, im someone whos confessed to almost all of my crushes, for girls, i make sure theyre not straight before confessing because GOD KNOWS how confessing to a straight girl will end up lmao... frankly speaking none of my crushes actually liked me back long enough for us 2 start dating, and even if they did im afraid of relationships so nothing ever happened

HOWEVER im still good friends with the two girls ive confessed to, and i think as someone who knows you very well, your friend won’t like. ghost you because thatd be terrible. of course i’d understand creating some distance for a short period of time if you confess but i doubt she’d stop talking to you forever, seeing as youve been friends for ten years!!

its also a big plus that shes openly bi!!!! i dont rly know how she’ll react for sure, but despite that i’d say give it a shot! maybe confess first, before asking her out. see how she reacts first! i think anybody would be flattered that somebody likes them! !!! i wont touch on the her telling someone she likes you part because i dont know how reliable that information is.,,

another thing -- dont get your hopes up. i know that part might’ve given you some encouragement but remember, its been 5 months dont go confessing because you KNOW she likes you back, confess because you WANT her to know about your feelings. dont expect a relationship right after confessing, because how you react to her response matters!! naturally its okay to feel down bc she doesnt like u back but DONT say “i thought you liked me!” because thats placing expectations on your friend and it might make her feel guilty if you react really badly

though i trust that you know why you’re confessing to her !! i know you want to ask her out but let’s save that for after she’s responded and as much as possible try to hold the conversation in real life so you can observe her body language (but dont get too overly conscious of it!)

go in with an open mind, and believe in her. she wouldn’t let this ruin your friendship and if she rejects you, own it. if she rejects you, give up on her, you spent three years pining for her, now you can move on after like. getting that closure??

OF COURSE if its requited then thatd be fantastic, and ill be happy for you!!! i wish you all the best, and hope all turns out in your favour! (be it she returns your feelings or the outcome of your friendship)

if the friendship does get ruined, it wont be on you because its not like you can help who you fall for, and i think you’re once again, super brave for considering confessing!!

Hello! My name's Reese, Im 20 and Ive been roleplaying for about 8 years now! I live the the central time zone, however I will rp with anyone from any time zone. Im looking for a reliable rp partner, just someone who I can trust to not up and disappear in the middle of a good story. I love creating worlds of fantasy or horror and building chatacters and relationships! I dont really have any triggers when it comes down to it; I dont roleplay a specific, small handful of kinks but I can be negotiated with. Overall Im a sucker for NSFW roleplays! Though not purely sex based-I love roleplays with gore, trauma, psychological horror, etc. Which I know are technically classified as NSFW (buuut Ive been known to overlap the smut with the gore for some of yall fellow freaky-deaks out there ;) Im a medical nerd, so my horror, gore, and psyche stuff are pretty within the realm of our reality and I stick to medical accuracies. Unless of course its a monster or a demon, then things get a little wild. I mostly find myself roleplaying MxM but Id honestly roleplay anything between any characters! I roleplay for the sake of a good plot and character relationship rather than carnal desires. I just had to bring my car to the shop for a repair. They ended up needing to keep it. Now a rental was covered under the warranty. So at least the rental was covered. so, i went onto the website with the annoying singing fat man, got a reasonable quote for my classic car, declared all cars in my household, one of which is a company car with 2 years NCB. Paid the deposit and remainder was to be paid monthly by direct debit. I'm almost 20 years old, a full time student and do not have health insurance. When I was 16, my parents switched insurance companies, and for some reason or other they did not put me on their policy. So I have not had insurance for 3 years. In February I found out I was pregnant so I began applying for Medicaid. Before all the paperwork was done, I had miscarried and in the process racked up almost $6000 in medical bills. I went to the medicaid office and they told me that they would cover my bills even though I was no longer pregnant and college students don't qualify. After 2 months of waiting, Medicaid denied me and the hospital turned me into a collection agency. I was denied because I make too much money. I make $8.55 an hour and work about 15 hours a week. Yes I do make good money for a student but I have worked at the business for 3 1/2 years. Because I am not a full time employee, I don't qualify for insurance, but only managers and department heads are full time. I can't get a second job to help pay the costs because my first job wont work around another one, and I can't find a full time job because no where is hiring. Plus it would be very hard to find anywhere that pays as well as the job I have here. So if health insurance is so important to have, then why is it so hard to obtain?""

At age 36 in a blue-collar job (i.e. chance of disability over 90 days less than 10%), I'm thinking it may make more sense to get long-term care insurance rather than long-term disability. I bring in 30% of our household income. If I become disabled, I count for very little of our total spend (obviously food, but I wouldn't be doing much in the way of leisure / entertainment), but the added costs of caring for me would be too much for our budget to bear. I also think it would be very hard to qualify for disability for class 1 (a desk job sitting in front of a computer all day). It seems like it would be easier to qualify for two functions of daily living. I ran into some issues with money and could not pay so I cancelled the policy and avoided driving for a little over a month. I was covered under my moms health insurance while in college and I was told I needed to be enrolled in school to stay covered, I dropped out a while ago and was wondering if I am still covered by law under the Affordable Care Act since I am only 19. I was covered under my mothers health insurance, she works for a private company and she said that I needed to be enrolled in school in order to stay covered by the insurance. But this was close to a year ago if I'm remembering correctly. The reason I'm worried is because I'm taking a break from college, and have had multiple doctor appointments/tests done after I left, but I never had a problem with the insurance going through. I've made myself paranoid into thinking that the company may just not know, and is assuming I'm still in school and will randomly hit me with the costs of the testings and doctor visits if they saw I was not in school, or god forbid somewhere down the road my mother or I are in a serious accident and are dropped because of this. I know this happens all the time, the insurance agencies have people hired to find abnormalities in your history in an attempt to drop you and not have to pay the bills. I live in north carolina and I have two cars right now. One is a dead car ( having insurance) and the other is new car ( dealer said it is ok to drive that vehicle for atleast 30 days with in the state without transfer of insurance ..I will be transferring the insurance from my old car to new car in 3-4 days as holidays are ahead. My car was parked on a busy street in icy conditions and when I returned to it, it had clearly been hit but no one left a note, etc. It will probably be very expensive to fix...although it is only cosmetic damage and it isn't horrible.
