In a first for Canada, freight traffic on its two largest railways has simultaneously ground to a halt, threatening to upend supply chains trying to move forward from pandemic-related disruptions and a port strike last year. In the culmination of months of increasingly bitter negotiations, Canadian National Railway Co. (CN) and Canadian Pacific Kansas City Ltd. (CPKC) locked out 9,300 engineers, conductors and yard workers after the parties failed to agree on a new contract before the midnight deadline. The impasse also affects tens of thousands of commuters in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, whose lines run on CPKC-owned tracks. Without traffic controllers to dispatch them, passenger trains cannot run on those rails. Pressure from industry groups and government to resolve the bargaining impasse has been mounting for weeks, with calls to hash out a resolution likely to ratchet up further now the work stoppage has begun.

This book is all about the ideas for Lagrange point space colonies that O'Neill developed through the early 70s. He covers a variety of ideas, shapes and sizes of habitat (the movies Elysium and Interstellar feature very faithful examples) and the engineering and mathematical calculations required to build and operate them. A lot of the content seems hopelessly optimistic all these years later, in particular the dreams of how cheap the Space Shuttle would be and how low cost access to space would become. We may finally be getting there 40 years later! This is the mass market paperback version of the book, the hardback has several more of Don Davis's colour illustrations. The 99% Invisible podcast produced a great episode about O'Neill and the Lagrange habitats - search for 'Home on Lagrange' to listen. Sheesh. Between this, “Dracula 2000” last night and “Scream 3” last week, I’m in full “Blockbuster-on-a-Friday-night” mode. I remember renting this when it came out and the DVD skipped at the very end so I never knew who the killer was. I had to rely upon fan pages and summaries to find out.
