Donald Sutherland
Commanding and versatile actor known for his roles in MAS*H, Don’t Look Now and The Hunger Games
Donald Sutherland, who has died aged 88, brought his disturbing and unconventional presence to bear in scores of films after his breakthrough role of Hawkeye Pierce, the army surgeon in Robert Altman’s M*A*S*H (1970), one of the key American films of its period. It marked Sutherland out as an iconoclastic figure of the 60s generation, but he matured into an actor who made a speciality of portraying taciturn, self-doubting characters. This was best illustrated in his portrayal of the tormented parent of a drowned girl, seeking solace in a wintry Venice, in Nicolas Roeg’s Don’t Look Now (1973), and of the weak, nervous, concerned father of a guilt-ridden teenage boy (Timothy Hutton) in Robert Redford’s Ordinary People (1980).
Although Sutherland appeared in the statutory number of stinkers that are many a film actor’s lot, he was always watchable. His career resembled a man walking a tightrope between undemanding parts in potboilers and those in which he was able to take risks, such as the title role in Federico Fellini’s Casanova (1976).
Curiously, it was Sutherland’s ears that first got him noticed, in Robert Aldrich’s The Dirty Dozen (1967). During the shoot, according to Sutherland, “Clint Walker sticks up his hand and says, ‘Mr Aldrich, as a representative of the Native American people, I don’t think it’s appropriate to do this stupid scene where I have to pretend to be a general.’ Aldrich turns and points to me and says, ‘You with the big ears. You do it’ … It changed my life.” In other words, it led to M*A*S*H and stardom.
Sutherland and his M*A*S*H co-star Elliott Gould tried to get Altman fired from the film because they did not think the director knew what he was doing due to his unorthodox methods. In the early days, Sutherland was known to have confrontations with his directors. “What I was trying to do all the time was to impose my thinking,” he remarked some years later. “Now I contribute. I offer. I don’t put my foot down.”
Sutherland, who was born in Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, was a sickly child who battled rheumatic fever, hepatitis and polio. He spent most of his teenage years in Nova Scotia where his father, Frederick, ran a local gas, electricity and bus company; his mother, Dorothy (nee McNichol), was a maths teacher. He attended Bridgewater high school, then graduated from Victoria College, part of the University of Toronto, with a double major in engineering and drama. As a result of a highly praised performance in a college production of James Thurber’s and Elliott Nugent’s The Male Animal, he dropped the idea of becoming an engineer and decided to pursue acting.
With this in mind, he left Canada for the UK in 1957 to study at Lamda (the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art), where he was considered too tall and ungainly to get anywhere. However, he gained a year’s work as a stage actor with the Perth repertory company, and appeared in TV series such as The Saint and The Avengers. He was Fortinbras in a 1964 BBC production of Hamlet, shot at Elsinore castle and starring Christopher Plummer. He also appeared at the Criterion theatre in the West End in The Gimmick in 1962.
In 1959 he married Lois Hardwick; they divorced in 1966. Then he married the film producer Shirley Douglas, with whom he had twins, Kiefer and Rachel; they divorced in 1971. Kiefer, who grew up to become a celebrated actor, was named after the producer-writer Warren Kiefer, who put Sutherland in an Italian-made Gothic horror film, The Castle of the Living Dead (1964). Christopher Lee played a necrophile count, while Sutherland doubled as a dim-witted police sergeant and, in drag and heavy makeup, as a witch.
In an earlier era, the gawky Sutherland might not have achieved the stardom that followed the anarchic M*A*S*H, but Hollywood at the time was open for stars with unconventional looks, and Sutherland was much in demand for eccentric roles throughout the 70s.
He was impressive as a moviemaker with “director’s block” in Paul Mazursky’s messy but interesting Alex in Wonderland (1970), which contains a prescient dream sequence in which his titular character meets Fellini. In the same year, Sutherland played a Catholic priest and the object of Geneviève Bujold’s erotic gaze in Act of the Heart; he was the appropriately named Sergeant Oddball, an anachronistic hippy tank commander, in the second world war action-comedy Kelly’s Heroes; and he and Gene Wilder were two pairs of twins in 18th-century France in the broad comedy Start the Revolution Without Me.
Sutherland was at his most laconic, sometimes verging on the soporific, in the title role of Alan J Pakula’s Klute (1971), as a voyeuristic ex-policeman investigating the disappearance of a friend and getting deeply involved with a prostitute, played by Jane Fonda.
Sutherland and Fonda were teamed up again as a couple of misfits in the caper comedy Steelyard Blues (1973). It initially had a limited distribution due mainly to their participation together in the anti-Vietnam war troop show FTA (Fuck the Army), which Sutherland co-directed, co-scripted and co-produced.
Sutherland always made his political views known, although they surfaced only occasionally in his films. In among the many mainstream comedies and thrillers was Roeg’s supernatural drama Don’t Look Now, in which Sutherland and Julie Christie are superb as a couple grieving their dead daughter. Despite the dark subject matter, the film was notable for containing “one of the sexiest love scenes in film history”, according to Scott Tobias in the Guardian, the frank depiction of their love-making coming “like a desert flower poking through concrete”. The actor so admired Roeg that he named another son after him, one of his three sons with the French-Canadian actor Francine Racette, whom he married in 1972.
John Schlesinger’s rambling version of The Day of the Locust (1975) saw Sutherland as a sexually repressed character – called Homer Simpson – who tramples a woman to death in an act of uncontrolled rage. Perhaps Bernardo Bertolucci had that in mind when he cast Sutherland in 1900 (Novecento, 1976), in which he is a broadly caricatured fascist thug who shows his sadism by smashing a cat’s head against a post and bashing a young boy’s brains out. “And I turned down Deliverance and Straw Dogs because of the violence!” Sutherland recalled.
In Fellini’s Casanova, the second of his two bizarre Italian excursions in 1976, Sutherland coldly calculates seduction under his heavily made-up features. The performance, as remarkably stylised as it is, still reveals the suffering soul within the sex machine.
In 1978 he appeared in Claude Chabrol’s Blood Relatives, a made-in-Canada murder mystery with Sutherland playing a Montreal cop investigating the murder of a young woman. More commercial was The Eagle Has Landed (1976), with Sutherland, attempting an Irish accent, as an IRA member supporting the Germans during the second world war, and as a chilling Nazi in Eye of the Needle (1981). Meanwhile, he was the hero of Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), who resists the insidious alien menace until the film’s devastating final shot.
In 1981 Sutherland returned to the stage, as Humbert Humbert in a highly anticipated version of Vladimir Nabokov’s Lolita, adapted by Edward Albee. It turned out to be a huge flop, running only 12 performances on Broadway. Both Sutherland and Albee played the blame game. “The second act is flawed,” Sutherland said. “Albee was supposed to have rethought it, but he never did.” Albee told reporters that he had scuttled some of his best scenes because they were “too difficult” for Sutherland because “he hasn’t been on stage for 17 years”.
Continuing his film career, Sutherland played a complex and sadistic British officer in Hugh Hudson’s Revolution (1985), and in A Dry White Season (1989) he took the role of an Afrikaner schoolteacher beginning to understand the brutal realities of apartheid. In Oliver Stone’s JFK (1991), he held the screen with an extended monologue as he spilled the conspiracy beans to Kevin Costner’s district attorney hero Jim Garrison.
After having made contact with young audiences in the 70s with offbeat appearances in gross-out pictures The Kentucky Fried Movie (1977) and National Lampoon’s Animal House (1978), the latter as a pot-smoking professor, he was cast as an unconvincing bearded stranger in Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992).
On a more adult level were Six Degrees of Separation (1993), in which he played an unfulfilled art dealer; A Time to Kill (1996), as an alcoholic, disbarred lawyer (alongside Kiefer); Without Limits (1998), as an enthusiastic athletics coach; and Space Cowboys (2000), as an elderly pilot. By this time, he was gradually moving into grey-haired character roles, one of the best being his amiable Mr Bennet in Pride and Prejudice (2005).
The Jane Austen novel was also featured in the television series Great Books (1993-2000), to which Sutherland lent his soothing voice as narrator. Other series in which he shone as quasi baddies were Commander in Chief (2005) – as the sexist Republican speaker of the house opposed to the new president (Geena Davis) – and Dirty Sexy Money (2007-09), in which he played a powerful patriarch of a wealthy family.
Sutherland continued to be active well into his 80s, his long grey hair and beard signifying sagacity, whether as a contract killer in The Mechanic, a Roman hero in The Eagle, a nutty retired poetry professor in Man on the Train (all 2011), or a quirky bounty hunter in the western Dawn Rider (2012), bringing more depth to the characters than they deserved. As President Coriolanus Snow, the autocratic ruler of the dystopian country of Panem in The Hunger Games (2012), Sutherland was discovered by a new generation; he went on to reprise the role in three further films in that franchise, beginning with The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013).
He played artists in two art-world thrillers by Italian directors: in Giuseppe Tornatore’s Deception, AKA The Best Offer (2013), he was a would-be painter helping to execute multimillion-dollar scams, while in Giuseppe Capotondi’s The Burnt Orange Heresy (2019) he was on the other side of the heist as a reclusive genius targeted by a wealthy and unscrupulous dealer (Mick Jagger).
Aside from James Gray’s science-fiction drama Ad Astra (also 2019), in which he co-starred with Brad Pitt, Sutherland’s best late work was all for television. In Danny Boyle’s mini-series Trust (2018), which covered the same real-life events as Ridley Scott’s All the Money in the World, he played J Paul Getty, the oil tycoon whose grandson is kidnapped; while in The Undoing (2020), he was the father of a psychologist (Nicole Kidman), reluctantly putting up bail when her husband (Hugh Grant) is arrested for murder.
For the latter role Sutherland was in the running for a Golden Globe, having already received an honorary Oscar in 2017.
He is survived by Francine and his children, Kiefer, Rachel, Rossif, Angus and Roeg, and by four grandchildren.

Oh! How about the Boyd characters and their orders at the coffee shop? Keep up the good work, these are so fun!
Steve Murphy: Ironically enough, an americano (yes, Javi teases him about it). It’s strong, and it tastes great with a cigarette.
Donald Pierce: He likes his drinks extra sweet and extra caffeinated. His favorite is a vanilla mocha with a shot of espresso.
Cap Hatfield: He’s not fancy, he’ll just use whatever coffee beans are around and a tin cup. A cube of sugar and some milk adds a lot for him, though. Modern Cap really likes a nice cappuccino.
Clement Mansell: He *can* do espresso shots, but he likes to be obnoxious with it. He’ll order a venti latte with oat milk, half shot espresso, two pumps lavender syrup. 170 degrees Fahrenheit.
The Corinthian: The Corinthian actually usually just orders green tea, but once in a while he’ll get an iced pumpkin spice latte.
Eli Klaber: He’s getting a mint hot chocolate!
Ty Shaw: He doesn’t get them often at all, but Ty actually really likes the Frappuccino flavors that Starbucks has. The caramel one is his favorite. Most of the time, Ty’s getting his caffeine fix from Red Bull though.
Quinn McKenna: Drip coffee. No cream, no sugar.

Doing some kiss meme prompts! Got a couple requests on discord but feel free to send more! Will work through them as I have time the next few days!
houlifield + a kiss while laughing for @almostpleasantrebel — I’ve never really written Margaret or Helen before so I hope I have done so to your standards, Moll!! 😘 thanks for the prompt!!
Margaret can’t remember the last time she had this much fun. Probably the last time she’d seen Helen when they graduated from nursing school, if she was being honest. But now — here — almost a decade later, and amidst all the army’s foul ups, they’d managed to do one good thing for Major Margaret Houlihan, and Helen had been dispatched to the 4077th without Margaret even knowing she’d come to Korea in the first place. It was a short term assignment, sure, but God, if it wasn’t the happiest Margaret had been since the night she first met that rat Donald.
Helen had started the night laughing across the table from her at the Officer’s Club, swapping stories and positively *howling* at Margaret’s stories of her time here at the 4077th. And now, here at Rosie’s, they’d gotten closer and closer. Margaret hadn’t realized the way they’d been slowly inching around the table between drinks and dances and stories, but all of a sudden, Helen was pressed up against her, shoulder to shoulder, thigh to thigh, as if their chairs had gravitated around the table of their own volition. She felt warm at every point of contact, even with their fatigues as a barrier, and when Helen threw her head back to laugh at her own joke, Margaret was suddenly aware of the fact that she hadn’t heard a single word Helen had said. She tried to laugh herself, play along, but she had been so busy watching the way Helen’s bright red lips, smudging and fading at the center where she sipped on her glass, formed the words themselves.
Margaret couldn’t help but wonder if she still wore the Max Factor Ruby Red that had been Helen’s favorite shade all through school ever since they’d shoplifted a tube from the drugstore to share when they were nineteen years old. When it ran out, they never bought two tubes, just kept one going to share. When they went their separate ways after graduation, Margaret had told her to keep it.
“You alright, Margaret?”
“What?” she asked, coming out of her daze to find Helen had stopped laughing, but was looking at her with concern tinged with mild amusement. “Oh! Yes, yes, I’m fine, Helen, just a little lightheaded, I suppose! Do you remember the last time we had some water instead of this awful stuff?” She laughed, holding up her glass of terrible whiskey and trying to wave off Helen’s concern. She delighted in the trill it brought out of her friend.
“Oh!” Helen shrieked with another peal of laughter. “Must have been before graduation day at least!”
There was a slight twinge of worry in Margaret’s chest at the joke, Helen had always… Well, she’d promised Margaret she’d learned her limits and the last thing Margaret wanted to do was ruin their first night together in years nagging Helen like a mother hen — or worse, one of their teachers from nursing school. She grabbed Helen’s hand and pulled her to her feet, never mind that the sudden movement had them both wobbling from the drink.
“Alright!” she crowed, trying to hold them both up despite her own incredibly precarious balance. “Alright, I think it’s time to go to bed! You can sleep in my tent tonight, we’ll find a bed assignment for you in the morning!”
She shot a glare to Captain Pierce calling out from behind her that he’d be happy to assign his own cot in the Swamp to Helen. She wouldn’t even dignify that with a response and she was sure to tell him so, much to the amusement of Pierce and the other doctors with him and, much more importantly to Margaret, to Helen herself.
They barely made it out the doors of the bar before they were stumbling and Margaret had to catch herself on the corrugated tin walls of Rosie’s bar. Helen tumbled after her and as they both knocked into the aluminum siding, more shrieks of laughter came out of each of them. Margaret didn’t know what was wrong with her. Why couldn’t she stop laughing?
Her head lolled to the side, taking in Helen’s rosy face, half in shadow and half illuminated by the dim, flickering sodium lights coming out the windows. What she could see clearly was bright red, with tears of mirth welling up in Helen’s eyes and she could only imagine she looked the same. For once, she was too happy to give a rats ass what impression her behavior might leave with the nurses under her command inside and as the two of them slid down to the ground in a heap, she marveled at the way Helen’s bright smiling face was getting closer and closer.
The next thing she knew, Helen was catching her giggles with her lips and Margaret melted into the contact. She tangled her fingers in Helen’s long brown hair, no care at all to the curls she could imagine her friend setting carefully in rollers the night before. She wanted to feel the roots between her fingertips, wanted to see how it looked mussed from her grip when they pulled apart. But not yet. Helen’s lips were tacky with the remnants of her lipstick — ruby Red Max Factor, just like she’d thought — Margaret would remember that taste on Helen’s lips anywhere, even a decade later.

Do you have any favorite and/or least favorite fanfic/fandom tropes or HCs for Donald Pierce or the Corinthian??
alright here’s my (+ @breedaboyd 's because we are a package deal) big long list of hcs
Donnie
• he/him, gay
• trans masc!! has a big cup size but his chest never really gave him dysphoria so he doesn’t see the need to get top surgery. or bottom surgery. really the only thing he’s done for his transition medically is take T shots. rarely wears binders and sticks to sports bras for support
• monster clit energy
• comfortable with some feminine terms as a way of reclaiming his past (ex: yes you can call him ‘queen’ and ‘miss’ he owns that shit now that he’s confident in who he is)
• ex military - mad scientist - engineer - mercenary combo. not really a headcanon but I feel the need to emphasize how much of a powerhouse he is
• reinforced metal spine and skull after an accident caused parts of his skin to be burned away (in addition to getting his arm amputated when he was in military service. different incidents). he made all of his cybernetic parts and manages them all himself, except in rare cases where he may need assistance. typical mad scientist things ykyk
• his type is huge, muscly, guard-dog men he can keep on a leash (Logan was the blueprint but we all saw how that worked out. he’s been a huge wolverine fan since he was in high school)
• gold fangs!!!!
• his hatred for mutants stems from jealousy. he knows he’ll never be one of them and in a rapidly advancing world that deeply scares him. he’s obsessive over keeping his cybernetic parts up to date and top of the line to combat his fear of being left behind. (-based on what boyd said in interviews about him)
• scariest power bottom you’ve ever seen in your life. miss pencil sharpener pussy
• size queen. will insult your dick size in broad daylight
• made a metal dick for himself once but honest to god it’s more of a weapon than a toy. do NOT let him use the strap
• all of the reavers want him so goddamn bad. why else do you think they’re so loyal to him they’re after that cyborg pussy
• he did NOT die and lives happily in his poly marriage with Kurt Ackerman (werewolf mutant oc) and Eddie Brock (yes, the venom guy) up in their cabin in Canada. he keeps them both leashed and wears the pants in the relationship at pretty much all times.
Corinthian
• pronouns up for debate honestly but I know he at least uses he/him. gay. faggot, even.
• not trans masc in the traditional ftm human sense but more so born genderless and consumes masculinity. it’s complicated but he’s somewhere close to male.
• his body is naturally androgynous (has a masculine frame but has feminine sex characteristics)
• has been dominant for most of his life but deep down wants to find someone he’s comfortable enough to be submissive with. being dominant allows him to avoid being too vulnerable and as a result he tends to default to that. the second Cori struggles very badly with this internal conflict and ends up avoiding sexual situations as much as he possibly can.
• paints his nails (this is basically canon fight me)
• his freckles have constellations hidden in them. a very good design choice on Dream’s behalf
• HE IS NOT RIPPED. HE IS PLAYED BY BOYD HOLBROOK HE IS SOFT AND SQUISHY. NO ABS.
• has always wanted to be a father and hence has a tendency to steal children and treat them as his own. this is all Dream’s fault because he programmed Cori to be Daniel’s caretaker a little too intensely. as far as I’m concerned this is the canon explanation for why he’s like that
• fairytale princess. has a tendency to be assigned talking animals as his babysitters. once again not even a headcanon he’s just like that
• this whole post I made about the dangerous cavern of his pussy
• lactose intolerant but still consumes dairy anyway he just like me fr
• gave Matthew gay slur rights because he thinks it’s funny
• Morpheus didn’t originally intend for Cori to be as horny as he is that’s all Desire’s fault for fucking around in the workshop
• his eyes are very sensitive PLEASE be gentle with his eyes
• wiggles his whole body like a long wet noodle when he’s happy because he was tragically born without a tail. regardless he can purr
if that ain’t enough to quench your thirst my entire blog is here 24/7 we have an array of hcs scattered throughout the isles
#this was fun to get all my thoughts down onto paper#the sandman#the corinthian#xmen#donald pierce#asks#boyd holbrook#my art

Ramon Antonio Vargas at The Guardian:
The Federal Bureau of Investigation has identified 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks from Bethel Park, Pennsylvania as the “subject involved” in the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump, it said in a statement on Sunday. The shooting took place during a campaign rally at the Butler Park Showgrounds in Pennsylvania on Saturday evening.
In a social media post, Trump said he was “fine” after he was “shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear.” The former president was quickly whisked from the stage by Secret Service agents, his ear covered in blood. One attendee was killed and two others critically injured. The political leanings of Crooks, who was shot dead by the Secret Service after the attempted assassination, were not immediately clear. Records show Crooks was registered as a Republican voter in Pennsylvania, but federal campaign finance reports also show he gave $15 to a progressive political action committee on 20 January 2021, the day President Joe Biden was sworn in to office. Officials have not publicly disclosed a possible motive. The Federal Aviation Administration said on Sunday that the airspace over the Bethel Park was closed “effective immediately” for special security reasons. The US Secret Service has said its agents shot the suspected attacker after he fired toward Trump – who was speaking on stage at the time – “from an elevated position outside of the rally venue” in Butler county. He thanked law enforcement officials for their “rapid response”. Writing on Truth Social he said: “Mostly importantly, I want to extend my condolences to the family of the person at the rally who was killed and also to the family of [those] badly injured,” said Trump, who was taken to a hospital for evaluation and then reportedly discharged about 10.20pm local time. “It is incredible that such an act can take place in our country.”
The FBI has named the perpetrator who attempted to assassinate Donald Trump at a rally just outside Butler, PA yesterday: 20-year old man Thomas Matthew Crooks.

Traintober 2023: Day 25 - Distress Signal
What's Out in Tidmouth Bay:
“And every year, on the date of the sinking, the ship rides the seas again, searching for the crew that abandoned her to her watery grave…” Salty finished, grinning at the assembled engines. “Rubbish!” snorted Douglas. “Thir's na sic thing as ghost ships rising up oot o' th' ocean. Whit a doolally idea. Whitevur neist? A submarine letting oot distress signals, even though thir's na yin thare?” Both he and his twin Donald sniggered. Edward scowled.
“You shouldn’t joke about lost submarines,” he said grimly. “After all, there’s a tale of a submarine that was lost off Tidmouth bay that will make you funnel quiver.” “Ooo! Tell it! Please!” exclaimed the other engines. Edward shot a dark look at them.
“This is not a pleasant story, and it’s certainly not one to make light of…” With one last sigh, the old engine began his story.
“Back during the First World War, both Britain and Germany began to deploy early submarines to disrupt shipping and try to starve their opponent out of the war. But back then, the submarines were still new technology – they rattled, and sprang leaks, and they were loud most of the time too. But when they glided underwater, not even the keenest of eyes could spot them.
“In 1916, several British submarines began docking at Tidmouth. These submarines were manned by local Sudrians who’d signed up for the navy, and they were very proud of their machines. ‘Best in the Navy!’ they would boast. ‘Never to be beaten!’ we would often reply, caught up in a great patriotic spirit for our country and our boys doing their part to defend it.
“One of the duties of these submarine crews was to tow large underwater mines into choke points in the harbour waterways. These giant, spiked balls of explosives were placed randomly, so that enemy ships would be unable to get too close to the harbour to attack. The submarines were good at this job, and the island’s people always felt safer knowing they were protecting us.
“It all changed one foggy night. A German U-Boat had been spotted off the coast of Liverpool and was sailing north towards us at a tremendous rate. At the time, Tidmouth was a major manufacturer of shells and explosives for the front line, and even one hit to the factory would do irreversible damage. The submarines in Tidmouth bay were sent out to find the German U-Boat, despite the thick fog that made navigation almost impossible – and they found it. Unfortunately, they also found the minefields.
“The radios were filled with crackly cries for help from Sudrian sailors, all lost in the fog and trying to avoid the mines they’d set while also hunting for a German U-Boat. We all waited with bated breath on the shoreline, all listening to the radio and praying for the boys…”
Edward paused, then tears filled his old eyes.
“And then, there was a flash of light – it was so bright, it pierced through the fog and lit up the entire bay – and screams. They came through the radio for only a couple seconds, but they were the longest seconds of my life. They were horrible – wretched, broken, filled with agony and suffering – and then they were gone. One of the Sudrian submarines had found the German U-Boat and fired on it… but they had missed… and hit an underwater mine. Both ships were destroyed, sinking down to their final resting places on the sea floor.”
The engines were horrified. Even Donald and Douglas were silent, eyes wide. Every engine who had lived through the First World War had known someone who had lost their lives – but to actually see it with their own eyes… it was horrific.
“But that wasn’t the end,” Edward continued, startling everyone. “One year later, the remaining submarines were sat in the harbour when their radios crackled with an unknown message. But it wasn’t just the submarines’ radios – no, it was every radio in Tidmouth. Every single one picked up this unknown, crackling message. It was a distress signal! – a shouted one, in two different languages. One was foreign – German; garbled, broken by the static of the radios. The other however… it was the lost sailors from the sunken submarine. They were shouting at each other and at us – and then there was a massive explosion that ripped through the radio-waves. There was a flash of light – and then those screams. They tortured us, far longer than the screams we’d heard on that fateful night. They were in German too now, as if both ships were wailing for their losses. And then… nothing.
“This happened again the next year, and then the year after that – and after that, the people of Tidmouth learnt. Every year, on the date of the accident, every radio in Tidmouth is switched off. It’s a moment of silence, for the men who lost their lives.”
No one knew what to say, and so they all went quietly to sleep.
The next evening, Edward was away on his branchline, and a new driver decided to leave the radio on for the engines in the sheds. This was not uncommon – the engines enjoyed the background noise; it was relaxing after a long days’ work.
It was only Donald and Douglas – Bear had the midnight goods, Gordon had the express, Salty was delivering some trucks to Elsbridge, Duck was collecting a late load of ballast, James and Henry were sleeping at the other end of the line, and Oliver was pulling the last passenger train of the evening. “Edward's story - ye dinnae hawp it, dae ye?” asked Donald. “Na! nae at a' - tis a guid story fur a friten, bit thir's na sic thing as ghosts,” snorted Douglas. “Especially nae ghosts sending oot distress signals.” “Aye, whit nonsense…”
The song on the radio ended – but another didn’t start. Instead, the radio crackled – as if suddenly overwhelmed by a wave of static. Voices could be vaguely heard from the radio, quiet – but growing louder. They were in English… and in German. They were screaming, pleading, arguing, begging for help. It was a distress signal. The voices grew louder, more garbled – and then, there was a sonic BOOM! that erupted from the radio, almost knocking the Caledonian twins off their rails.
It was followed by a horrific wailing and screaming. It ripped through Donald and Douglas, their boilers going cold at the sound. It was the sound of dying men. It stretched on for what felt like an eternity, eventually tapering off into garbled groaning, and then nothing.
An unseen figure in a top hat clicked off the radio, and vanished out the back door, unheard by the twins. They were barely holding in their tears, eyes wide and wheels quivering.
Oliver puffed in, looking very confused. “Are you two alright?” he asked. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost—” “Dinnae... say that…” Donald croaked.
Oliver stayed respectfully silent.

Chapter 1
“My dear, if you feed us any more I have no doubt that I shall burst.” Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard stated as he and his teammates sat around your dining table.
“Oh my god. This dessert is so good!” Eleanor “Ellie” Bishop groaned appreciatively after swallowing her first bite of tompouce.
Abby clinked her dessert fork against yours, “I couldn’t agree more.”
“You know that I’m particular about what I eat but this isn’t too bad.”
Tim rolled his eyes and swatted Tony on the arm, “If you look hard enough, you’ll find some praise in there somewhere.”
Tony shot Tim an unimpressed look before hitting him up the head.
“How foolish of me to think that you would be grateful to see your teammate after she was undercover for six months and not complain about her cooking for you.” Ziva piped up, glaring at the two men.
“Thank you Ziva. It’s good to know that you and some others appreciate my efforts.”
Ziva inclined her head and Delilah snickered into her food.
“Can I take some of the dessert home?” Jimmy inquired after he finished his plate and put his fork on top of it. “My new neighbours are from the Netherlands and I’d like to do the neighbourly thing and welcome them to the neighbourhood with something from their homeland.”
“That is a wonderful idea Mr. Palmer.”
“Of course you can, Jimmy.” You motioned to the remaining pieces of the cake, “Take as much as you want.”
Your eyes lingered on the one untouched piece of dessert that lay on the counter. Ducky noticed your worried gaze and he reached over the table to pat your wrist, “Jethro is relieved beyond all words that you are safe,” the Medical Examiner reassured you. “He will finish his call and then be back in to enjoy the dessert.”
You managed a smile, “Thanks Ducky.”
There was a clang and you spun around to see Ellie, Delilah, and Torres at the sink. They were all holding dishes except for Torres who was holding one of your tea towels. The three of them were wearing deer in headlights expressions, “We wanted to help. You fed us. It’s the least we could do.” Torres explained.
You shook your head fondly, “I have the best team.”
“Hear, hear!” Abby echoed, raising her fork with the last piece of dessert on it.
Your front door squeaked as your boss, Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs, re-entered your house. His hair had grown since you had last been in Washington D.C. and a few silver strands hovered next to his piercing blue eyes.
He gazed around the room before he focused on you. There was regret in his eyes as he spoke. Seconds later, you found out why.
“Gear up!” He announced. “An ensign was found just inside the Washington D.C. border underneath a tree.”
Torres put down the dish that he was wiping, “That’s not all, is it?”
“He was a person of interest in a SVU case for the team that operate out of Manhattan.” Gibbs revealed.
Tony blew out an annoyed breath, “And he crossed state lines. Why do they always run?”
Ellie was thinking along the same lines that Tony did, “Since he crossed state lines; that means we need to coordinate with that SVU squad.”
“Regrettably yes.” Tony grimaced.
Ellie held up her hands, “I feel like I’m missing something here,” she confessed. “Why are you acting like collaborating with the SVU squad is a bad thing?”
“It makes things more complicated.” You revealed to her. “Sometimes egos get in the way and it wouldn’t be the first time that we work with a team of cops and one of them has their own agenda.”
“I hope it’s different this time. I mean, we want the same thing that the SVU squad want. Why shouldn’t we be able to work together?”
Ellie’s optimism helped to lighten the atmosphere in the room and you wished with all your heart that she was right. It would be nice to have an open and shut case.
Meanwhile, in Manhattan, Rafael Barba scowled darkly at the phone clenched in his fist. He resisted the impulse to throw the device across the room and break it. His glare remained on his face as his mind ran through possible outcomes and the obstacles they could cause.
“That drug should have incapacitated that traitorous ensign long before he could reach the car! Why didn’t it? Now the descará has drawn attention by crossing state lines and he’ll ruin everything!”
Rafael Barba breathed out raggedly. In his mind, he heard his mother chiding him, “No seas pesa’o, mijo.”
Focusing on his breathing, Rafael felt his heart rate steady, which was a good thing when he considered the fact that he was still in his office. It would not be a good thing if one of the SVU team were to barge into his office as they usually did when they needed something and they saw him looking any less composed than he should be.
He shook his head amused, “Right as always, Mamí. All I need to do is shift the focus of the NCIS team when they arrive. They’re not looking for the murderer of a naval officer, they’re focusing on his victim. Olivia and her squad should keep them fairly busy if I play that angle.”

A Shot in the Dark - Chapter 39, Lord Buchanan
Summary: After contacting Rhodes by radio, Quin vows to continue the fight. A shot in the dark has consequences.
Length: 3.8 K
Warning: Teasing between friends, actions causing death of a character.
<<Chapter 38
🥷 🖤
Bren sent a rider to Waya and Coulson about the King and Buchanan's fall trusting Quin to tell Heimdall when he joined that unit in the battlefield. By the time Quin returned to the castle the word had spread throughout the battlefield that the King had perished and his son would be crowned King that evening. When Quin and the King's Guard rode into the courtyard there were many soldiers crowded outside and inside the gates. He stopped under the gates and stood on his horse, turning and looking at the soldiers, seeing some familiar faces but many were unfamiliar to him.
"My people," he yelled. "We lost my father today by a sniper's bullet. What you don't know is he was dying already from Duke Walker's treachery ... a poisonous bullet that pierced his arm and spread a toxin through his body. When he woke today he saw the end of his life was near and chose to go out like a warrior, fighting with those who fight for him. Some of you only know me as a spoiled, petulant boy but I stopped being that brat months ago. Since then I have learned what it is to be a good man. I have learned that true nobility isn't something you're born with but something that you acquire by how you treat others and how you perform your duty to family, friends, and kingdom. I learned that from a man who was born a farmer's son. I have seen it in another man who was born a slave and still another who was born in a brothel. If you choose not to follow me that is your right. You can take your horse and your weapons, leave this battlefield, return to your families and live knowing that you will not be blamed by me for leaving. For I failed to be a noble man for the longest time. But if you believed in my father and joined his cause knowing that life under Duke John Walker would be infinitely worse then I ask you to stay. I ask you to put aside your lack of trust in me and believe in this kingdom and the right to live with dignity. I will bury my father this evening, then I will wear his crown. Then I will do something that many of you have never heard of. I will be the last King of the Western Plains. After the dust has settled and we have rebuilt I will abdicate to live as a normal man, like all of you. You will elect a ruler, and you will a elect a council to rule with that person. Anyone can be on that council, man or woman, current born or modern born, rich or poor. That is my pledge to you."
"You would give up being royal to defeat the Duke?" asked one man, and Quin looked for the face that went with the voice.
"Donald Cooper," said Quin, recognizing the face. "I bullied you for crossing in front of me as I rode my horse, making him rear. I made you put your face on my horse's droppings as punishment." Quin suppressed a look of self revulsion. "I did that to you yet you wear my father's uniform and by the spatter of blood on it you have slain many. Yes, I will give up being royal if you stay to defeat the Duke with me. In fact, if you are by my side I would be honoured. I am sorry for the cruel person I was."
"I will stand with you Quin Torres," said Cooper. "I was a bit of an ass myself at times."
There was laughter and Quin smiled a genuine smile. "Thank you. Tomorrow when we rise against that traitor you will be by my side. Is there anyone else who wishes me to reveal what cruelty I inflicted upon them for I remember them all, to my eternal shame."
There wasn't a sound then someone else yelled. "I will ride with you!"
Then another and another called out until it grew into a great chorus of men committing themselves to the future and last King. Quin wept openly then held his hand up one last time.
"You honour me," he said. "Tonight, eat, drink, spend time with your friends, go to a brothel, pray. I care not how you prepare for tomorrow just be ready to go in the morning and show Duke John Walker exactly what he is up against. I thank you all."
He dropped into his horse's saddle and rode into the courtyard where a groom took his horse from him. He waded through the crowd of soldiers inside the walls, many of whom touched him and shook his hand. When he entered and walked through the infirmary there were more who reached out to him and he touched their hands with genuine emotion. By the time he made it to the command centre he had been pressing through the crowds of people for over 30 minutes. The room, when he entered, was full of lords, some of them furious at what he had promised the crowd outside. They started yelling at him and as Fury was about to intervene Quin jumped onto the table and yelled back at all of them.
"You want it to go on like before?" he snarled. "You want to live in luxury while people lay dying in front of your estate because they have no work? Or they were injured in their job and you just let them go and hired another to take their place? You believe yourself better than them? Then why aren't you on Duke Walker's side because that's what he believes in and he is wrong. You followed my father for a reason. What was it? To keep yourself above everyone else or to help the kingdom get through changing times? For the times are changing and you are either on the right side of change or the wrong side. Make your decision now."
There was grumbling but no one left. Quin looked at Fury and saw a smile appear on the man's face. As far as Quin was concerned that was the only man's opinion he cared about. Fury motioned to the radio room and Quin jumped off the table, knowing he had to make a call to Buchanan's estate. He went inside where the ham radio operator was waiting to begin the call sequence. Quin sat next to him and the man began.
"CQ CQ CQ KWP2 to KBL1 CQ CQ CQ come in please," he said.
They waited a moment and the man repeated it then the response came.
"KBL1 receiving," said the voice, who Quin recognized as Rhodes. "Go ahead KWP2. Over."
"Rhodes, is that you? Over." said Quin.
"Roger," said Rhodes. "Quin? What news? Over."
"The King is dead, killed by a sniper," said Quin. "Is Lady Buchanan with you? Over."
"No, she is resting under doctor's orders," said Rhodes. "She almost lost the baby some weeks ago. Over."
"Damn," said Quin, before pressing the transmit button. "Buchanan was hit by a sniper as well, using a poison bullet. Tom took him aside and helped him transform as the white wolf is immune to the poison. He is on his way back to you, alone, and injured. Over."
There was a moment of silence. "That's why Tom was there," said Rhodes, sounding defeated. "Beth told us about his vision from the Sorceress. We can only hope Lord Buchanan makes it home. I hope he does for Lady Buchanan's sake. Over."
Quin considered his next words. "Do you remember when you caught me gambling?" he asked. "You cautioned me against the strategy I was using. You don't have to say it out loud as we may be monitored. That is our plan for tomorrow. If it works you will hear from me soon. If it doesn't I will be dead and have released the soldiers from your lands from their commitment. Over."
"Understood, good luck, your Majesty," said Rhodes. "I will inform everyone here of the latest developments. Over and out."
Quin nodded at the radio operator and he signed off. The young king went to the door and opened it expecting to hear the sounds of arguing but instead he saw determined faces. The room was packed with lords, commanders and sub commanders. Fury had rearranged the table so that everyone would be able to see the large map laid out on top. Quin stood beside Fury and looked up, seeing Bren, Coulson, Waya and Heimdall nearby. Across from him was his father's garrison commander Garcia. He saw his two uncles from his mother's family who had stayed true to the King. Then he saw the fathers of some of his friends who had encouraged him in his previous life of a wastrel. In fact, several of those friends stood with their fathers wearing blood stained battle leathers and he nodded at them for they were also no longer the brats they had all been before.
"Thank you for staying true to the King," he said simply. "Tomorrow we go all in. Fury has been working on a plan and I pray it works because I am no tactician. But we must defeat the traitor soon as he already believes he has won by killing my father and wounding my general. Lord Fury?"
"We will use that belief against him," said Fury. "Lord Buchanan's men will leave before sunrise and we will pass the word they have been released from the battle as they were loyal to Buchanan and not an untested boy. My belief is that Walker will become overconfident and advance on the castle. We have all night to build blinds and trenches near the castle walls to hide our numbers, make him believe that most of you have also abandoned the fight. Buchanan's units will double back and attack Walker's forces from their rear. The rest of you will let the first wave pass then attack them from within. The final part of our force will be inside the castle walls. When the word is given they will attack by leaving through the gates while our archers and sharpshooters wreak havoc from above. We swarm them as a disturbed hornet's nest swarms anyone nearby."
"Do you not think we should negotiate for peace?" asked Lord Washburn, the small, sallow man who had suggested Quin hide out in the castle.
"Walker has killed my father with treachery," said Quin, pointedly. "You would trust his word in peace negotiations? There shall be no negotiations for peace, only his defeat."
"I'm not sure I can be part of this," said Washburn. "I think I shall withdraw."
"Too late for that Lord Washburn," said Fury, suspiciously, gesturing to the King's Guard. "The time to withdraw was before this meeting. Is there another reason you wish to leave now?"
"No, no, of course not," said Washburn, nervous now. "I ... I was undecided before."
Two of the King's Guard appeared behind him at Fury's gesture, and grasped his arms. Another appeared and looked through Washburn's pockets, pulling out a document and bringing it to Fury. He looked at it with a stony face then handed the document to Quin.
"A letter from Duke Walker offering you a powerful position in his cabinet," said Quin, sneering at the man. "Dated a week ago. You've been a spy for some time Washburn. Throw him in the dungeons. He will be judged after the battle."
"You are not the King!" yelled Washburn as the King's Guard dragged him out. "You're a worthless coyote pup."
"Anyone else want to admit to receiving such a letter?" asked Quin as Washburn's epithets faded away. "Now's your chance to get thrown in the dungeons."
To a man the remaining lords turned out their pockets to reveal they had nothing to hide. Quin smirked and nodded his approval. Fury addressed them again.
"The King's funeral will take place immediately in the chapel where he will be interred," said Fury. "Immediately after Prince Arthur will be crowned as King. I have already spoken to the companies who will be outside the wall and who will be inside. All archers and sharpshooters are to be on the battlements before sunrise. This briefing is over."
The funeral was brief as was the coronation. Quin wore his battle leathers for both ceremonies, dispensing with pomp and circumstance. In his opinion his elevation to king was like a battlefield commission, the mantle of responsibility was offered to him and he accepted. Drinks were offered to the men to mourn and celebrate. As Quin stood outside the chapel receiving the congratulations and fealty of the lords he leaned towards Fury.
"How does this affect the marriage contract?" he asked.
"It doesn't," replied Fury. "The terms of the contract have already been fulfilled. You have been crowned King and when your bride arrives there will be a separate ceremony crowning her your queen. The finances were put aside in a vault upon my return with the contract and will be paid to her upon her arrival. You will have nothing when you abdicate but she will keep her fortune as a contract is a contract. You will be a common man married to a rich, common woman."
"I hope she doesn't divorce me when she finds out she has to give up her title," said Quin.
"She won't," said Fury. "I told her the King's plan for he thought of it some time ago. She agreed to it. It is buried in a sub clause somewhere but I pointed it out to her."
"But not to me," said Quin, looking at Fury in surprise.
"Need to know," said the inscrutable man. "Your mother was aware of your father's plans but she also has a contract that will keep her and your sisters comfortably for many years." Fury looked sideways at Quin. "There is nothing to stop you from running for office, you know. You have a gift for oratory, that's making speeches. People like you. They like that you have changed from the shallow, spoilt youth that you were to a determined, principled man. Keep that in mind when you consider your future, your Majesty."
Quin smirked. Fury was sly but he was loyal and that was worth much. After the long line of lords had finished paying their respects, Quin removed the crown, gave it to Fury to return to the vault then went outside to dig trenches with his soldiers. He was surprised to find Liam and Edward each with a shovel already there.
"So do we have to call you King Arthur now?" asked Liam, as he leaned on his spade briefly. "I mean, this morning you were still Quin Torres who farts in his sleep. How did the Baroness feel about that on your honeymoon?"
Quin smiled but didn't answer. "He probably waited until she fell asleep and let it all out in one rip," said Edward. "I'm surprised he didn't wake her up when he did it."
When Quin didn't take the bait his two friends looked at each other then upped the ante. "How did the Baroness feel about the third nipple?" asked Liam, with a straight face.
Several other soldiers stood up, hearing the question. Quin stood up and looked at his friend exasperated. "You mean the one you wanted to suck because you missed your mam's tit?" he asked.
There were sniggers from the other soldiers, including Edward. Liam turned red, at least Quin assumed he did in the dark. "That's low, Quin, that's really low," complained Liam.
"You started it," said Edward. "I think he defended himself well. You insulted his wife, he insulted your mother. All that's left is his horse."
"Don't go there," warned Quin, trying not to laugh. "A man's horse is something special. You both know that. You've both slept your fair amount of time in stables."
"More than brothels I would suspect," said another voice and Bren appeared. "Cease the insults you three. I could hear you from a hundred yards away. The last thing you want is for spies to hear you in the dark. Your Majesty, would you like these two to remain with you in the morning? Perhaps as your personal guards?"
"Don't you need them?" asked Quin. "I guess I could put them on the food serving line. They have experience with that."
"As do you," retorted Liam.
Quin laughed then approached his friends in the dark. "Truce," he said, offering his hand.
Edward stepped forward just as a gunshot was heard and he fell to the ground. There were yells all around as everyone dropped to the ground and Bren yelled for soldiers to search the tree line then he called for a medic. He kneeled down and took out a shielded battery light. Edward laid splayed out on the ground with his eyes wide open. Bren leaned over Edward's lips and looked sideways at Quin, dousing his light.
"Get in the castle," he ordered. "You're done here. He's gone."
Quin, stared at the body in the darkness, not believing what had just happened. Liam grabbed him and jolted him out of his inaction, both of them scuttling low to the ground, with Liam keeping his body between the tree line and Quin. As they entered the courtyard Quin hit the wall with his fists, angered at what had just happened. Liam, stood with him, his mouth quivering. Quin turned to him.
"I want you with me when I kill that bastard myself," he spat out.
Three soldiers brought in a young man. One of the soldiers held a long rifle and a device that looked like it fit over the head. Quin noticed with disgust the man wore a patch with the tarantula spider.
"My own kinsmen sent to kill me," he stated. "Have you no idea that I have de Torres blood?"
"Not pure blood," stated the young man. "You're an abomination. All mixed bloods are. Walker promises to leave us alone if we help him kill you and your blood traitors. We will take over the lawless lands and control the coffee trade."
Quin struck him and bloodied the man's nose. "Put him in the dungeons," he said to the soldiers. "He will be hanged for the traitor he is. He's no family of mine."
The young man smirked and spat out a blob of bloody phlegm. Fury came out as Bren came into the courtyard, carrying the body of Edward in his arms. He looked at Quin with concern when Bren passed by.
"Your Majesty, I'm sorry," he said. "We will bury your friend with honour."
"Promise me, Fury," said Quin, looking at the man in the dark. "We send all of them to hell. They think I'm an abomination, a mixed blood. The men who negotiated my mother's marriage to my father think the progeny of that marriage don't deserve to live. We wipe them out, all of them."
The third soldier, carrying the long rifle and head gear, handed them to Fury, wordlessly. Fury put the headgear on and swore. Calling to the garrison commander he ordered a sweep of all the tree lines around the castle. The trenches had to be built but if there were any more snipers then all of their plans would be for nought.
"What is that thing?" asked Quin. Fury put it over Quin's head and the young king looked around in amazement. "It allows them to see at night? Are the secret tunnels still walled up?"
"Yes," replied Fury. "We should open them to allow Buchanan's force to leave secretly. I'll get people on it immediately."
"Secret tunnels?" asked Liam.
"From after the calamity," said Quin. "They were built to allow the first king to get his men out quickly without being seen. The tunnels end about 2 miles from here. I don't even know if they are still intact. You will have to lead your horses out using a torch for light."
An hour later Fury reported the tunnels were all intact. He suggested Buchanan's men exit now and hide in the washes just north of Amarillo but he wanted Waya's men for another task. A flare would be sent up when it was time to attack the rear. Bren, Coulson, Heimdall and Waya were sent for and Fury and Quin spoke to them alone in the radio room, with no one else present. Fury looked at the men.
"I am sorry for the loss of young Edward," he said. "There is a gentleman's agreement that no hostilities take place at night. We know once more that Walker is no gentleman. By the words of the sniper himself we are considered blood traitors for allowing mixed marriages. They are zealots and in their eyes they can do whatever they want to defeat us. Well, we can play dirty as well. Waya, I want you to go to Walker's estate, and the estates of his commanders and take their families hostage. You will bring them back here using the tunnels. They are not to be harmed. I wish to use them bring the traitors out of their tents, out of their places of safety. They will be given a choice. Surrender or we kill their families."
The four commanders looked at Fury with alarm.
"Of course we won't do that," he said. "We're not monsters. We don't kill women and children. Hopefully if they see and hear their husbands and fathers throw them to the wolves they will turn from him and his commanders. Then we slay Walker and his traitors from the parapets and from the rear. No mercy. It will be a massacre, yes, but it will be known we gave them the opportunity to surrender peacefully. The decision to die would be theirs."
"If they do surrender?" asked Bren, still troubled.
"A trial for Walker, his generals and lords for treason," said Quin. "The families will be sent into exile. Princess Maria has already promised enough ships to take them to some islands far in the south ocean. They will be left with supplies then life will be up to them after."
The four commanders agreed and their soldiers were summoned into the courtyard with their horses. Waya's company set out through the tunnels first, armed with maps of the estates of Walker, the lords aligned with him and his generals. The other three companies went through and assembled at a wash a couple of miles further on. They were ordered to rest easy until the signal was given.

The FBI said early Sunday it had identified the man who shot former President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler on Saturday as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park.
The U.S. Secret Service said Saturday night that the shooter “fired multiple shots toward the stage from an elevated position outside of the rally venue,” adding Secret Service personnel “neutralized the shooter, who is now deceased.”
Trump was pronounced safe shortly after the incident. A spectator at the rally were killed and two others were injured in the shooting. The victims’ identities have not yet been released by law enforcement.
“Tonight we had what we’re calling an assassination attempt on our former president, Donald Trump,” Special Agent in Charge Kevin Rojek of the FBI Pittsburgh field office said at a press conference late Saturday. “We do not currently have an identified motive.”
Trump thanked well-wishers in a post to Truth Social Sunday morning. “Thank you to everyone for your thoughts and prayers yesterday, as it was God alone who prevented the unthinkable from happening. We will FEAR NOT, but instead remain resilient in our Faith and Defiant in the face of Wickedness,” he wrote.
“Our love goes out to the other victims and their families,” he continued. “We pray for the recovery of those who were wounded, and hold in our hearts the memory of the citizen who was so horribly killed. In this moment, it is more important than ever that we stand United, and show our True Character as Americans, remaining Strong and Determined, and not allowing Evil to Win. I truly love our Country, and love you all, and look forward to speaking to our Great Nation this week from Wisconsin.”
The site of the shooting at the Butler Farm Show Inc. about 40 minutes north of Pittsburgh, remained an active crime scene, although authorities said they did not believe there was any ongoing threat.
Anyone who attended the rally or has information is asked to call 1-800-call-fbi, or go to fbi.gov/butler.
The shooting began shortly after Trump took the stage at about 6 p.m. Saturday. Several loud pops could be heard and a bloodied Trump was whisked from the stage, but not before pumping his fist toward the crowd.
Trump confirmed he was shot in a post to Truth Social a few hours after the shooting.” I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear,” he wrote.
How the shooter was able to get so close to the former president was not clear. Rojek said it was “surprising,” and added “the Secret Service really needs to answer that question, they conduct the initial site survey, they do the initial security assessments and determine where the different security locations should be, and they’re the ones who are in charge of securing the scene.”
President Joe Biden condemned the shooting in a brief statement from Delaware Saturday night “There’s no place in America for this kind of violence,” Biden said.
Congressional Republicans, meanwhile, have initiated an investigation into the incident. U.S. Rep. James Comer (R-Kentucky), chairman of the House Oversight Committee, sent an email to Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle requesting her to appear at a committee hearing July 22.
The Trump campaign said Saturday the former president, who was out of the hospital and at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey, would attend the Republican National Committee in Milwaukee this week as planned. He will receive the GOP’s formal nomination as its 2023 presidential candidate on Thursday.

What do you think are Boyd's characters go to drink on a night out?
Steve Murphy: Whiskey, neat. Bourbon, if possible.
Donald Pierce: Pierce usually goes for one of the classic “girly” cocktails - lemon drop martinis, margaritas, etc. They just taste good!
Cap Hatfield: Cap gets a beer. Whatever watered down malted barley thing they got. Modern Cap also gets a beer, but I bet he’d be slightly more opinionated about it - he likes his occasionally hoppy IPA from a brand with an indie band name and the prettiest cans.
Clement Mansell: Clement’s a sucker for expensive speciality cocktails with pretentious ingredients. Yeah, he *would* like to try the one with the cinnamon foam and the orange blossom tincture, thanks.
The Corinthian: The Corinthian likes his drinks classy and spirit forward. His go-to is a martini - usually a classic gin or vodka martini, extra dirty, but sometimes an espresso martini if he thinks he’s got a long night ahead of him.
Eli Klaber: Klaber’s big into wine. Dessert wines are his favorites - specifically sherry and port. But if he’s trying to act butch, he’ll usually just go for whatever’s on tap and guzzle it down quick.
Ty Shaw: Tequila shots! They make him wanna dance! He loves to have them with the salt and lime too.
Quinn McKenna: Vodka and Red Bull. Nice and efficient. You can take the boy out of the army, but you can’t take the army out of the boy.

Really only two who I can’t identify, and one of them, I’ve seen before. I’m going to look it up, but that would be cheating, so I’m not including that post-post lookup. The woman next to Pyro, over Sabertooth’s shoulder in the purple mask, I know I’ve seen her before and i should remember her name, but I don’t. The other is the woman standing between Sebastian Shaw and Donald Pierce, who I just realized is Selene. So there’s only one I can’t identify. ... ... ...I know way too much about the X-Men considering that it wasn’t ever really my favorite comic book. Was always more an Avengers and JLA comic reader...even FF before X.
I take it back. There is another character I can’t identify. Over Stryker’s shoulder, the woman in the hood with the headband and the hoop earrings.
So, I spoke too soon. There are still two people I can’t ID in this group shot. Helluva nice one. If you like it go to Etsy and buy yourself a copy.

80s Business AU
80s business AU started as a joke based on the IBM commercials, but at some point I got really invested. There are three sort of branches of continuity in my head, the gen one, the Hawkeye/Charles one, and the Hawkeye/Margaret one. I'm focusing on the houlihawk one right now in my daydreams, but the main events I'll talk about apply to all of them.
They all work at MASH Corp which I think manufactures medical supplies. It's set in vaguely New York, because that's the most 80s business city of all.
Also I want to put a huge caveat that I didn't want to ignore the AIDS crisis, but I also didn't feel like I could handle it sensitively in such a crack AU, so the solution I'm going with for now is that everyone is using all the condoms all the time.
With the exception of Henry, all characters appear at the same time, with BJ and Charles joining the office without anyone leaving.
Dramatis personae:
Henry Blake: The manager of their department who was trying to get transferred to another city that his wife wanted to move to. His transfer is finally approved, but on his way back from his final business trip before the transfer, he is killed in a plane crash.
Hawkeye Pierce: Mid level employee. Extremely competent, but kind of a mess personally.
Trapper John McIntyre: Hawkeye's colleague and best friend.
BJ Hunnicutt: Colleague of Hawkeye and Trapper and their third amigo. Recently transferred in from San Francisco.
Margaret Houlihan: the only woman in the office besides the secretaries and never lets anyone forget it. Serves in the same role as Frank and Charles, but is paid less, something she is constantly agitating about.
Frank Burns: serves in a slightly more senior role than Hawkeye, Trapper, and BJ. Frank's constant brown-nosing has yet to pay off.
Charles Emerson Winchester III: the son of a board member, Charles was transferred laterally after insulting his boss at his previous branch, but he sees it as a demotion. Serves in the same role as Frank and Margaret. Charles, to his credit, worked his way up to his previous position from the mail room. Becomes friends with Hawkeye.
Francis Mulcahy: a seminary school dropout in a junior position. Generally friendly to everybody.
Max Klinger: an enterprising young man in a junior role, friendly with everybody but especially Hawkeye.
Radar O'Reilly: a junior employee who works with technology, he's the best at his job despite less formal education.
Sherman Potter: the new manager, transferred from St. Louis after Henry's death. Affable and likes to socialize with his employees, but ultimately a company man.
Kehlani "Kellye" Yamoto: one of the most senior secretaries, responsible for starting the company's first union.
Sidney Freedman: Hawkeye's therapist. Hawkeye is bad at keeping appointments, but likes Sidney and invites him to socialize, which he does in order to keep an eye on Hawkeye, and because he likes him.
Some points:
Originally I had Henry on PanAm 103, but I recently learned a Korean Air passenger plane was shot down a few years earlier, after accidentally flying into the wrong airspace, so I'm considering changing it.
Hawkeye and Trapper sneak off to day drink in the boiler room, nicknamed the swamp due to its humidity. BJ drinks with them too, but only after business hours. Over time, Hawkeye's day drinking becomes less controlled.
Margaret carries on an affair with Frank, until she meets Donald Penobscott, an executive at a company they work with. Margaret and Donald have a very expensive wedding with all the 80s cliches, and divorce within a year. Donald has affairs, which is serious because he doesn't use protection with Margaret and she doesn't know what she might have been exposed to. Her tests come up clear, but she finds out she's pregnant. Hawkeye drives her to the abortion clinic.
While Margaret is married to Donald, Hawkeye and Margaret get trapped together on a business trip during a hurricane and end up sharing the last room at the airport hotel. They sleep together during this trip. Later, after Margaret's divorce, they're known for making out at office parties.
BJ was transferred unexpectedly, and is unhappy about having to uproot Peg and Erin, because Peg is now isolated in a new city without a support system. After he befriends Trapper, Louise makes friends with Peg and helps her meet people. BJ and Trapper begin spending more time together, especially while Hawkeye is spending a lot of time with Charles.
Charles begins abusing stimulants in order to boost his performance at work, eventually becoming addicted to cocaine. Hawkeye starts doing drugs with him, though he's self-medicating underlying mental health issues, not trying to improve his career. Hawkeye becomes somewhat distance from Trapper and BJ at this point. Charles and Hawkeye do drugs in the bathroom during Margaret's wedding reception, and Charles ODs. Hawkeye, very high himself, has to call an ambulance, and it ruins Margaret's reception.
Charles goes to rich people rehab after his OD, and returns to work sober. Hawkeye is still using, so they stop being close, until Hawkeye finally gets clean himself a few months later, and starts taking therapy with Sidney more seriously.
At some point during his mental health recovery arc, Hawkeye visits Henry's family in Illinois, where Henry had been planning to move to before he died.
Kellye organizes a strike for the secretarial staff, and Trapper refuses to cross the picket line.
BJ loves Garfield. He has a Garfield daily calendar and his workspace is covered in his favorite Garfield cartoons. He wears a Garfield tie every Friday. BJ is not as easy to get a Secret Santa gift for as you would think, because if you buy him a Garfield he already has he'll be devastated that you didn't remember when he described it to you in detail. He always buys everyone Garfield-themed gifts for holidays and he's assigned everyone their own character. No one understands his reasoning behind who was given each character, but Hawkeye is Odie because Odie has the most merchandise available after Garfield himself.
