Jesús Abraham “Tato” Laviera Sánchez (May 9, 1951 - November 1, 2013) a community activist, poet, declamador, playwright, author, and “a chronicler of life in El Barrio,” was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico to Maria Sánchez Ramos, an embroiderer, and Pablo Laviera Ramírez, a political nationalist, bricklayer, and contactor.

His Lower East Side (Loisaida) fifth-grade Catholic schoolteacher in NYC refused to call him Jesús because he was Black and did not speak English, thus his middle name held. He affixed “Tato,” bestowed by his brother. He attended Cornell University and Brooklyn College.

He was the director of the University of the Streets youth program. He led the Association of Community Service Centers and Hispanic Drama Workshop. He taught creative writing at Rutgers University.

As president of the New Jíbaro Democratic Club, he secured Loisaida US Post Office formal recognition and marshaled 100 activists to seize the offices of Gouverneur Hospital. The successful protest prevented the planned closing of the only multilingual medical facility.

He was inspired to write after meeting Afro-Puerto Ricans Juan Boria, Cortijo y su Combo, Luis Palés Matos, Clemente Soto Vélez, and Jorge Brandon. His books include, La Carreta Made a U-Turn, Enclave, AmeRícan, Mainstream Ethics, and Mixturao. His plays include La Chefa, Here We Come, Becoming García, King of Cans, and Piñones. “AmeRican” is the most anthologized Puerto Rican poem and many of his works are part of the Latinx literary canon. La Carreta was the first Arte Público publication and he helped the press become the largest publisher of US Latinx authors. He is in Birthwrite, Los dos Mundos de Angelita, and The Browning of America films.

He received the Long Island State University Lifetime Achievement, Comité Noviembre Puerto Rican Heritage, Puerto Rican Embassy’s Pedro Pietri Hand, and American Book awards. Artist Don Rimx created a Tato-depicted mural memorial at East Harlem’s Taíno Towers. He has a theatre named in his honor, and its 123rd street corner was renamed Jesús “Tato” Laviera Way. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Born and raised in a Puerto Rico public housing development, David Sepulveda, aka Don Rimx, immersed himself in art under the watchful eyes of his parents. Moving to Brooklyn—before eventually landing in Florida—Rimx says the city had a profound affect on his work and the skeletal structures with which he "explores the synthesis of man and his city." Just steps from downtown Salem, MA, the El Punto neighborhood has long provided a home to waves of immigrant populations including a large number of Caribbean workers. In 2017 @NorthShoreCDC launched the Punto @Urban.Art.Museum bringing world class art to the neighborhood and Rimx was on hand to share this work on Peabody St.  @donrimx/

On Wednesday, as first reported by Artnet, New York attorney Andrew Gerber sent a letter to McDonald’s on behalf of six Brooklyn artists—Don Rimx, Beau Stanton, Virus, NDA, Atomik, and Himbad—threatening imminent legal action against the fast food chain, claiming it featured the artists’ work in a new Dutch ad campaign without their permission.

McDonald’s teamed up with the Bushwick Collective, a group of New York City street artists, to create an artsy-yet-gritty ad campaign promoting its “New York Bagel Supreme” burger in the Netherlands.

The four-minute “McDonald’s Presents the Vibe of Bushwick” video highlights graffiti murals that have become synonymous with the Brooklyn neighborhood’s art scene, with Bushwick Collective founder Joe Ficalora serving as narrator and tour guide in the promo campaign.

Puerto Rico born David Sepulveda, aka Don Rimx, grew up in public housing surrounded by drugs and gun violence. While the classically trained Rimx credits the watchful eyes of his parents with "keeping him on the straight and narrow" this background undoubtedly had an impact on his later work and commitment to various community projects. In 2018 Rimx was in the diverse North End neighborhood of Hartford, Connecticut, where he applied his unique visual poetry of line work and color treatment painting "Music of Wind" for the Parker Memorial Community Center on Main Street as part of the @Hart.Paint.City program.  @donrimx/
