UK could join 'Asian NATO' alliance to restrain China's ambitions
Tumblr media
Britain could be poised to join an alliance known as 'Asian NATO' in order to restrain China's ambitions, it is believed.   Reports in Indian media have floated the idea of Britain joining the so-called 'Quad' which currently consists of the United States, Japan, India and Australia. With Britain lining up what Dominic Raab has called an 'Indo-Pacific tilt' after its departure from the EU, membership in the 'Quad' would enlarge an alliance of countries who have all clashed with an assertive Beijing in recent months. While no firm proposals have been put to Boris Johnson so far, there is thought to be an 'appetite' in the UK government to join the alliance, according to the Telegraph. Fears over China's military and political ambitions have led to calls for an expanded 'Asian NATO' alliance and prompted the US to send an aircraft carrier, the USS Theodore Roosevelt (pictured), to the South China Sea to promote 'freedom of the seas' Officially known as the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, the alliance was first set up in 2007 and joint naval exercises were held between the four countries. The grouping was abandoned a year later, but revived in 2017 with official talks between the four governments. The four foreign secretaries met last October at a meeting in Japan where the US lashed out at China's Communist rulers for 'exploitation, corruption and coercion'. The Read the full article

How the world has reacted to US vote - Times of India
Tumblr media
PARIS: From warnings to good wishes and mockery, governments around the world have reacted very differently to the hotly-contested US election race between US President Donald Trump and challenger Joe Biden as votes continue to be counted. Here is a selection: "Everything that concerns our country is seen in the United States like a red rag to a bull," Kremlin spokesman Dmitri Peskov told reporters on Thursday. "That's why we won't make any comment. Americans probably need to put some order in their own affairs themselves." He added, however, that the uncertainty linked to the election results in the world's biggest economy "could potentially have negative consequences for the world, above all for the global economy". "What a spectacle!" Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei tweeted Wednesday. "One says this is the most fraudulent election in US history. Who says that? The president who is currently in office." The head of an international observer mission to the US elections accused Trump of a "gross abuse of office" after the US president called the polls a fraud and demanded that vote counting be halted. "The most disturbing thing was that with presidential fanfare of the White House, that is, with all the insignia of power, the American commander-in-chief called for an end to the count because of his purported victory," Michael Link from the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe told the German daily Stuttgarter Zeitung.
