Even in the vast softness of Caitlyn’s bed

Vi felt the jolt. It was either that or the soft, pained exhalation that woke her, but it didn’t really matter. She snapped awake with the sudden alertness she’d been taught by Vander and had honed in Stillwater. Even though she came around in an instant, she still expected to feel a cold concrete floor beneath her aching side and smell the charnel stink of sweat, desperation, and blood. Waking up to soft linens and the clean, fresh smell of sheets washed in lavender water, and *Cait* felt fresh and new every time.

“…no…” Cait mewled. “…no… stop… Jinx… Cupcake! Cupcake she calls me-“

Vi hesitated, unsure whether to wake her. She’d seen plenty of people cry out in their sleep and knew that eight times in ten it was better to let them ride it out instead of waking them in the middle of something that might make them lash out or hurt themselves.

When Cait let out a blood-curdling scream, Vi lept wxross the bed and pressed a hand to her cheek, finding a cold sweat sheening her skin.

“Cait, wake up.”

Caitlyn’s eyes (*eye*, a bitter voice added) snapped open and she looked around, jerking up from the bed, her chest heaving as she drew in ragged, pained breaths.

Vi pulled her into an embrace, wrapping Caitlyn up in her arms and bending her body as much as she could to form a shield around her while Caitlyn desperately hugged her back and buried her face in Vi’s neck.

Sometimes they said more this way than they did by talking. Vi sat up and gently rubbed the back of Cait’s neck with her fingertips and pressed light kisses to the crown of her head, for no other reason than she loved her and she was free to show it.

Finally Cait said, “I had a nightmare.”

“Do you want to talk about it?”

Cait didn’t answer, instead resting her head on Vi’s shoulder while her finger aimlessly traced the tattoo on Vi’s arm, sort of half-humming on exhalation. Vi had learned that Cait wasn’t being rude when she didn’t answer her and that these little things she did to soothe herself were just as important. That Vi could savor Cait’s touches forever was incidental. Vi hadn’t touched her enough and would make up for it for the rest of her life.

“Do you remember the… the tea party.”

Vi swallowed hard. That night had been one of the most painful of her life, when all her sins had marched out of the darkness to revenge themselves on her tenfold. It was the terror she felt when she saw Cait’s eyes that shattered her, but the worst, the worst…

(I paid your girlfriend a visit…)

It hurt to even summon the thought, like touching the edges of a barely healed wound, feeling the scab lift and pull at the raw flesh beneath.

For a moment Vi knew that Jinx was going to lift that lid and Caitlyn’s severed rotting head would be sitting there staring at her with blank eyes and she cringed in horror and fear, a shiver ripping through her.

Cait knew; Vi didn’t have to say yes.

“Did you ever wonder how she knew you called me cupcake?”

Vi shook her head. “I thought she must have heard me. On the bridge maybe or…”

“She might have, but she delighted in making me tell her. I was helpless, terrified. She spent hours hurting me, but she kept saying she wouldn’t kill me because she was waiting for you. She said you’d do it.”

“Did you believe her?”

“No, never.”

Vi let out a long, slow sigh in relief.

“I hurt you. I hit you, but you would never hurt me.”

“We talked about that, Cait.”

“I know.”

There was a brief silence in the dark. First light was beginning to peek through the curtains and soon it would be time to get up. Most nights Vi hated waking now. She wanted nothing more than to spend then rest of her life in soft sunlit moments with Cait, making love under the warming sunlight as often as not.

Cait’s hand worked between them and traced over the scar on Vi’s belly, in the same spot where Cait’s rifle butt had smashed the air from her lungs and left her begging, sent her spiraling into a booze-fueled nightmare of longing where the pain of a fist to her face was the only thing that kept her awake long enough to keep looking for someone to kill her in the ring before the drinking did.

They held each other a little tighter.

“No one is going to get you now,” Vi promised.

“You’re not my keeper, Vi. You mean more to me than what you can do for me.”

“I meant you can hold your own. You took me out, remember? Do you know how many people can say that?”

“You let me win because I’m me.”

Vi shook her head. “Not until I was already face up on the ground. You took down Ambessa.”

“I had help.”

“You’ll have help if someone comes at you again. My help.”

“I told you, Vi, you…”

“No. It’s not because I owe you something, it’s because I love you.”

Vi hadn’t said the words yet, despite all this time, but it shocked neither of them.

“We protect each other, then.”

Vi nodded in agreement. She could see Cait’s eye growing lidded and the tension slit out of her body as Vi lay down with her. She was asleep in a few minutes, snoring lightly against Vi’s neck.

Vi vowed to stay awake, Cait was too soft.

I honestly don’t think I’ll ever be able to ship CaitVi ever again, I am so sad and disappointed by how the writers/director decided to handle Caitlyn’s character, I don’t care if they do end up together by the end of the season, Caitlyn hit her, it was literally domestic violence, Vi has been the constant victim of violence her whole life, she spent her life afraid of enforcers and was beaten by them constantly on still water, and then the only person she has left, her romantic partner no less who is an enforcer, calls her blood tainted and hits her.

 This is a short little bit of fluff about Vi being a good partner, doubting herself, and getting reassured by Caitlyn cause she's also a good partner. They are married and expecting. I based this off of my own experiences in the first trimester of my wife's pregnancy.

Ok I have gone through all available evidence and I have a prediction.

Look I'm ngl I am watching Arcane for Cait and Vi. I love the show overall but this ship is what I'm most here for, especially after I spent the last 3 years under the assumption that Mel was dead. Glad she isn't. Point is, I really want CaitVi/Violyn/Piltover's Finest to be handled well, and I pay a disproportionate amount of attention to what happens with these two.

After watching the first arc of season 2 the other day, I was trying really hard to ignore the ending to episode 3. I didn't like that Cait hit Vi in the stomach and abandoned her in a pit after being all classist at her, but I thought, this is Arcane. Arcane is the greatest fucking thing I've ever seen, of course they're gonna find a way to make this work. But that made me think of it as a puzzle. How could they possibly make this work?

Option one, Cait sucks now and she and Vi don't get back together. I don't think this makes sense, because of the brand. CaitVi is a popular ship that just about everybody likes. A huge amount of the hype for this season before the trailers came out was building up assurances that don't worry, CaitVi is happening and it's not gonna be ambiguous. Take this teaser from like two weeks after season 1 ended, a couple of Valentine's Day icons, and one million tweets from Amanda Overton. Why the fuck would they make this season be about Cait and Vi not working out? It simply doesn't make logical sense.

Ok, so we're starting from the assumption that Cait and Vi have a happy ending that makes people feel like they should be together, and continue to want to play as them in the games and buy merchandise. That means they either explicitly get back together, or it's so implied there isn't much of a difference. My money is on zero ambiguity. Vi is the main character and Cait is maybe #3 or #4. Ambiguity about their ending would just look like a weak writing choice and they didn't know what they're doing. The Arcane writers don't tend to go for wishy washy.

But here's the problem. Domestic violence is bad. It's about the fastest way to guarantee the majority of your audience doesn't think two characters should be together. It would take a herculean effort on Cait's part to make up for that and honestly I still wouldn't believe it. To me, there isn't any kind of act of service that makes up for hitting your partner. Not even ensuring the independence of the nation of Zaun. Add on top of that the over the top hurtful comments about Vi's blood and class. It makes her look very much like, deep down, she thinks of Vi as beneath her. If she meant those things, a relationship between them is impossible. (Not to mention how many teenaged girls I know are watching this, and I don't want them to think it's ever okay to be treated like that, even in a fantasy series.)

So my prediction is this. The only way to make a relationship between Cait and Vi viable again is to render those comments and the sentiment they carry meaningless. How do the writers do that? Imo it turns out later that Cait intentionally came up with cruel things to say to cut Vi loose. She realized that Vi would never be able to kill Jinx, and this new explosion will make the situation aboveground even worse, and Vi still won't be able to contribute to the hunt after this. Vi has no future as an enforcer against Jinx and will probably get treated like dogshit as a Zaunite, so Cait is "breaking her heart to save her", as Tvtropes would say. In Cait's mind, it's better if she's left down here in Zaun.

What evidence do I have for this? It fits Cait's characterization as a genius who thinks quickly and several steps ahead. It fits the tiny animation details we zero in on of her stiffening her trembling lips and furled eyebrows. It un-ruins the most popular canon relationship in League. It allows act 1 to end on massive shock value but roll it back later to show that Cait actually does love Vi, enough to let her go for her own good.

I'm not arguing this is the best possible solution but it's the one I think they're going to go with. Amanda Overton and some others have repeatedly said that CaitVi fans will be happy with the ending to Arcane. Everything about the show(the opening, Netflix Brazil's Twitter account, the story) points to them being the show's OTP except for this one scene. I think Cait intentionally cut Vi out of her life by pretending to be much crueler than she wanted to be, to protect her and, likely, as a form of self destruction.

11. Iris by Goo Goo Dolls: They reunite. They argue. They make up. Each word they speak is secretly a plead and confession of love.

Life is imperfect, but it's better when they're together. It finally feels... Perfect. The peaceful kind.

"Morning, Cupcake."

Caitlyn stirred, humming. She stretched, sleepily blinking her eyes open.

"Morning." She smiled, looking up at Vi.

Vi was beautiful in the early morning light.

She was standing next to the bed, holding something in each of her hands, but Caitlyn's vision was too blurry to make it out. What she could make out was storm gray eyes, fluffy red hair falling into her face and highlighting her features.

She was gorgeous.

"I made tea," Vi whispered, sitting down next to Caitlyn. She perked up, finally seeing the mugs.

She reached for hers, a white mug with floral details her grandmother had gotten her as a little girl. It warmed her hands against the cold of the room.

Caitlyn took a sip of the tea. "You're amazing." Vi giggled.

"Only the best for my love."

Caitlyn smiled, leaning in and pecking her lips. She loved this side of Vi, the soft, loving, brilliant woman that only she got to see. Vi put a finger under her chin and pulled her back in, kissing her fully this time before letting her go.

The moment was dulled by a knock on the bedroom door. 

Vi sighed. She looked at Cait. "Come in!" she called.

The door opened and shut in a second, a flash of blue ducking in and disappearing as soon as it had appeared. Caitlyn giggled at the girl's antics. 

"Did you make any tea for me?" Jinx asked, now underneath the bed. Vi rolled her eyes.

"No, you don't like tea," she replied.

Caitlyn smiled around her mug, leaning back against the pillows and continuing to drink.

Jinx sniffled. "You didn't make any for newer," she whined.

"You can't have tea from underneath the bed anyway, Darling," Caitlyn chimed in.

"I don't want tea."

Vi snorted into her mug. "You're a brat, you

know that?" she asked Jinx, although her tone was purely playful and lighthearted.

"I want fizzy juice."

"It's too early for fizzy juice," Vi replied.

"But I want fizzy juice." Her words were muffled from being under the bed, but Caitlyn could still hear the pout in her voice. 

"Why don't you come up here?" Caitlyn asked her. 

"To snuggle?" Jinx inquired. 

Caitlyn smiled softly. "Of course."

Jinx was on the bed in seconds. She curled up at Caitlyn's side, hair positively a rat's nest but a content smile on her face. Caitlyn slid an arm behind her to hold her close. Vi couldn't help but smile too as she watched the scene. 

"I cannot believe my little sister is stealing my girlfriend from me right now, in front of my face," Vi joked. Jinx laughed and hid her face in Caitlyn's shoulder. 

"She's just warm," Jinx said.

"Oh, is that it?" Vi asked.

"Mm-hm," Jinx hummed.

Caitlyn took another sip of her tea. She held it out to Jinx. "Want a sip?" 

Jinx perked up. She nodded, leaning forward and taking a careful drink of the warm liquid. She smiled. 

"I thought you hated tea," Vi said.

"It's good when she makes it."

"I made this tea," Vi said smugly. 

"It's awful," Jinx changed her mind.

"Who's side are you on?!" Vi laughed. Caitlyn tightened her grip on Jinx and laughed too, a big fan of the sibling banter. 

"You two are adorable," she said. 

"Damn right," Vi said, batting her eyelashes at Caitlyn. 

"I am not cute!" Jinx cried. Vi and Caitlyn both laughed.

"You're right, Bunny. You're adorable," Vi taunted. Jinx stuck her tongue out at her. She buried her face in Caitlyn's hair.

"I hate you both."

"Awww," Caitlyn cooed. 

"We love you too," Vi said, scooting over to sit on her other side and gently rubbing Jinx's back. She looked down at her sister lovingly, playing with her hair now. Caitlyn leaned over to kiss the top of Vi's head. 

Caitlyn pulled back and smiled at them. The teenager at her side who made her life infinitely brighter and the love of her life, who brought her tea in the mornings and made her feel more loved and safer than she ever had. 

She couldn't think of a single thing she would trade any of this for.
