 Dom: "They broke into his hotel room in the middle of the night. They carried him downstairs. Billy and I sat on Orlando's knees and Sean Bean pulled his arms back. Viggo pulled up Orlando's shirt and slapped the hell out of his belly. He was nearly crying, the poor baby." Orlando: "It's all very affectionate. We were all in it together. "If we got bored, tired or grumpy somebody would slap you around the head and say "get a grip'." 

Elijah: "We did try to go out and relieve tension, go to bars and that sort of thing. And crazy things would happen. We had a scale double, Kiran, and Viggo would chase him down and attack him. And one night, when Sean Bean and Viggo were drinking, they decided to break into Orlando’s hotel room and kidnap him, dragging him screaming down the stairs. It was absolutely delightful."

This story from the set of Lord of the rings always intrigues me. It's seems so extreme! What led them to think Orlando needed this treatment?

Orlando is implying that the reason for being manhandled by his friends was because he was being annoying/sad/prissy. Must have been a pretty damn bad mood to earn such an epic gesture... He obviously weren't attending the party that night, so maybe he was feeling particularly low, and was hiding in his room. And I guess since they were in a hotel, they were on some location shoot somewhere. And I imagine Orlando was moping in his room looking like this. While Viggo maybe came straight to the party from the set, thus looking, perhaps like this. A little wild, a lot drunk.

In early interviews with Orlando, he mentioned that he had a girlfriend when he went to NZ, who either stayed behind and they broke up because of the distance or she stayed with him for seven months before it ended, it differs. Was this breakup perhaps why Orlando was in such a funk that his friends wanted to cheer him up? Or slap him up, as the case may be.

The more I think about it, the whole thing becomes rather erotic. I can imagine the scene: the guys holding down Orlando extremities, Viggo sitting astride Orlando, slapping his bare belly. I imagine a drunk, over-excited Viggo holding Orlando's body down with his weight. Maybe Viggo was wriggling on Orlando's crotch while Orlando was trying to buck him off. Maybe the situation got more intimate than anticipated but it just made Viggo wriggle a little more. Maybe the whole thing was really just an excuse to touch Orlando. After all, why talk about what is ailing you, when you can kidnap them and slap them and make them cry? But then, Viggo is clearly a little crazy.

The story is also testament to how this rowdy group of boys acted like they were soldiers on leave, a band of brothers who accept no weaknesses. It's also interesting how they always seemed to be working in a team, how Viggo was their informal leader (was it his idea? As some kind of tough love?).

Viggo really is such an intriguing fella. Intense but calm, quiet but unhinged. And rather unpredictable, I guess. Grinning that wild, broad grin of his, after his random attacks.

Listening to the cast commentary on the LOTR extended editions is so funny because it's like:

Dom and Billy: just pissing about, having a laff, being jokesters

Elijah and Sean: having deep philosophical conversations about war and religion or making fat jokes about Sean as Sam

Ian McKellen and Christopher Lee: Being the grand old men of acting that they are, making insightful comments about the nature of acting or Tolkien or whatever

John Rhys Davies: Sometimes the same as the above, but mostly talking about how he spent most of his time hiding away from everyone because the prosthetics they used ate into his skin, poor guy :(

Sean Bean: I wasn't actually here for this scene

Orlando Bloom: ohhh this person's amazing. So is this one. Look how incredible this set design/scenery/special effect is. Elves don't feel the cold or get tired so I had to pretend not to be cold or tired. Oh isn't [insert actor here] incredible?

Viggo Mortensen: is not present in any of these commentaries

Bernard Hill: F**ck

Everyone else: mostly saying normal things about their characters and filming the scenes lol

I've been listening to the Lord of The Rings audiobooks as read by Andy Serkis, and I'm on The Two Towers and it just got to the part where Gollum finally speaks. It's such a great performance from Andy. I'm at work listening to it and every time Gollum speaks I've got this big grin on my face cuz it's just like..... It's him. That's Gollum. Also, he incorporates everyone's accents and vocal tones from the movies, specifically Sean Bean, Dom Monaghan, and Billy Boyd. Plus if there's a line that's directly quoted in the movie, he says it in the same cadence that the actor in the movie delivered it in. It's just great

this might be a really weird ask and you might not know the answer but i'm going a little crazy. i know you used to be in the lotrips fandom, so maybe you can help.

so in the livejournals from back then, i've seen the phrase 'eat the world' several times. there is a rec list called 'recs that ate the world', a fic called 'elijah and dom eat the world' and a rec where someone called a fic 'billy angst fic that ate the world'. i can't seem to figure out if that was a fandom insider or just a phrase used often back then? especially since i know that billy and dom literally called their new travel show BILLY AND DOM EAT THE WORLD??? did they name that thing (unknowingly?) after a fic title??

Viggo kissing Billy during Sam's wedding scene to help get a good reaction out of the couple and Billy going, "I saw stars...and I think I fell in love for split second and then I felt a bit sick."

Dom talking about how John Rhys-Davies would take out every single stunt guy in a fight

Viggo headbutting all the stunt guys and then telling Sala to go headbutt Orlando

Of course, Viggo breaking his toes kicking the helmet. A classic!

Sean Bean refusing to ride in helicopter and the cast seeing him climbing up a snowy mountain in full costume

Andy Serkis accidentally ripping off Sean Astin's wig

All the hellish filming of Helm's Deep

Sean Astin forgetting his waistcoat during the Grey Havens and all the Hobbits being so pissed that they had to film the big crying scene again

The wind up at Mount Sunday being so strong, it whipped Peter Jackson's glasses right off his face and they fell down the mountain. He had to then squint all day at the monitors in order to see them when rewatching takes

Brad Douriff having to shave his eyebrows for Grima and his wife being so pissed about it

Dom getting a splinter in his foot when filming Buckleberry Ferry and claiming it was huge and made of titanium, but it was just a small splinter

Viggo splitting a tooth with his sword and wanting to just superglue it so they could continue filming

The New Zealand Army playing soldiers for the Battle at the Black Gate

Also the cast filming that scene where the Army did demolitions training (or something like that) and being told to avoid stepping on any leftover explosives that might be out there

Orlando's bow breaking during pickups for Return of the King. "I'm Legolas, my bow doesn't break!"

John Rhys-Davies being gifted a prosthetic mask on his last day and him gleefully running and throwing it into a fire (because he was allergic to his prosthetics that had to go on his face)

Viggo having a ton of crazy makeshift crowns during the coronation scene

Christopher Lee knowing the proper sounds for when someone gets stabbed in the back

Dominic Monaghan, Billy Boyd, Elijah Wood and Viggo Mortensen all taking the piss out of Orlando Bloom for going on about a cracked rib too much, while Orlando Bloom desperately tries to wriggle out of talking about it (special mention to Elijah Wood’s “oh it hurts, babes, and I can’t ride the horse, babes” and Viggo Mortensen’s “they can be very fragile, elves, especially the…Mirkwood strain…”)

Ian McKellen commenting that “they never did find any suitable underwear for Gandalf…”

Two questions! Will we be seeing Julian in any fics, and is there any reason why you picked Nikolaj to be Julian's faceclaim?

Yes, Julian will be around in some fics. He’s definitely got a role in OLS.

I always believed that the reason why Ward hated Waverly was because she physically looked like the man Michelle had an affair with. If she looked like Ward, or at least had a closer resemblance to him or her sisters -- pale skin and darker hair -- I don’t think he would have hated Waverly. Yes, he still have been a complete bastard to the her, but at least the hate and neglect would have been distributed equally among the three of them.

Also, never underestimate a child’s awareness; Willa was just as horrid to Waverly as their father, she blamed her for Michelle leaving, explicitly saying in her diary that “there was something wrong with her” when she was brought home as a newborn. Willa knew Waverly was different, she could see it as plain as day. As did Ward. So, I’m a firm believer that if Waverly looked anything like Ward, Michelle would have passed her off as his and no one would have thought otherwise.

I headcanon Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Ward, as I’m sure many others in the fandom do. Dark hair, pale (though in some photos he does look darker/tanner), his jawline isn’t as defined. Originally I was going to pick Sean Bean, since I envision Julian as being very different than Ward, but then I looked at Nikolaj and said there he is! Same hair, same skin color, same defined jawline; what sealed the deal were the photos of him smiling.

TL;DR put a photo of Dom and Nikolaj Coster-Waldu smiling side by side and you have Julian.
