Whatever It Takes (To Get Me Out Of Here) -2-
A/N: Thanks to @ceruleanmusings for helping me figure out that Eve should be in 11th grade in this fic considering some plot points I have in mind to touch upon. As well as the fact that this is going to be set in season 11, episode 32 “Underneath It All Part 1”.
I already love writing Eve’s and Perino’s sarcasm with each other. Also, I know I continuously called him “Dom” last chapter, I’m just going to refer to him as “Perino” from now on. I’ll go back and edit the last chapter when I can.
Chapters will get longer.
-
“I’ll pay for dinner.”
“Yeah, with my money.”
“I’ll never complain again.”-
“Have you met you?”
“Have you met you?” Eve slumped her shoulders. She turned her head, resting it against the rattling bus window. Her head came back and landed against it once more, with a resounding, thunk when it rolled over the potholes. With a sigh, she turned her head back to gaze at her father. “It’s not too late to change your mind.”
Perino lifted his gaze from his phone. Finally. What was it with parents and Sudoku? It wasn’t that fun of a game. Crosswords were, at least, a little more interesting, you had to know things for that. At least, that’s what Perino was always saying to Eve, she had no idea if it was the stress of her first day getting to him…or just her. She hoped it was her.
Hoped he would stop the bus and turn around and drop her off at Bardell and things would go back to normal. But, no. The scratchiness of the collar of her red polo shirt and the stiffness of her khaki pants let Eve know that she truly was stuck in the decision to take her to Degrassi.
“Eve, trust me, if I could change my mind at this point, I would,” he said. “Just so you would shut up.”
There was a snorting sound from behind them, a nosey-nuisance that was eavesdropping on their conversation when most normal people would have headphones plugged so far in their ears they drowned out the living. At the same time, Perino and Eve turned and glared at the man behind them, who immediately lowered his chin, going back to the reading he was supposed to be doing.
They turned back at the same time, with Dom folding his newspaper and tucking it into his briefcase. The bus slowed. Eve groaned, seeing a sea of purple, blue, red, and yellow flowing up the street towards the school.
“Is there any other sound you can make than that annoying groaning?” Perino asked.
Eve turned her glare toward him. Unfortunately, she was his child, so he was unphased. Even when she was an infant and could do no more than dribble and spit up, when Eve was unhappy it was known through the ‘Dom Perino’ glare. It used to make her mom laugh. When her mom was still around.
“Guess not.” Perino reached out and put his arm around Eve’s shoulders, hugging her to his side. “If I can survive Degrassi, so can you.”
“The only way you survive Degrassi is by not getting involved.” Eve stood with Perino as he pulled the signal for the bus to stop. It slowed, creaking along the sidewalk to the covered bus stop across the street from the school. The two stood and shuffled down to the front of the bus, being careful not to get hit by the rickety doors when the jerkily swung open. “Isn’t that what you told me?”
“Yes, but I’m a teacher. I don’t need to get involved. I get paid to teach.”
“And what about me?”
“You don’t get paid to do anything, but chores and you don’t even do that.” Eve and Perino waited for the bus to leave, similar semi-scowls on their faces. Finally, with the smog cloud cleared from in front of them, they walked towards the school, only stopping when a Mercedes being erratically through the parking lot whizzed by them, two polo shirts and a yellow polo shirt as passengers.
“I’m busy paitning.”
“Yeah, finger-painting.”
At that, Eve managed a smile. She hip-bumped her father to the side, making him chuckle. “Eve, I know things are going to be hard, especially changing to a new school for a new year. And I understand Degrassi has it’s…quirks…” He voice trailed off for a moment, looking over toward a young couple kissing sweetly on the front steps.
Eve followed his gaze, a little confused. All she saw was a red polo and a blue polo kissing each other—a junior and a senior, what was wrong with that? Other than the little girl silk ribbon the girl had in her short, curly hair.
“Gross,” the African-American girl said. “Those two are step-siblings! Shouldn’t that be illegal?”
“Step…” Eve’s gaze turned back toward the couple again. Then, eyes widening, she whipped around toward Perino, practically squealing, “Dad!”
Perino shrugged. “Not my business. If I bothered to get caught up in the goings on of every single teenager and their petty problems, I wouldn’t get anything done.”
Eve folded her arms. She lifted an eyebrow. “Weren’t you at the school dance where someone was shot?”
“I think I was getting my coat checked in at the coat closet at the time,” Perino said sarcastically. He turned his head and lifted his chin, seeing two teenage girls walking his way. “Ah, just who I was looking for!” They turned toward him with bright smiles and somewhat, confused greetings of “Hey, Mr. Perino.”
Eve didn’t blame them; she couldn’t remember the last time her father had been nice and easy-going about anything school related. It was scary, sometimes, to see how his grumpy demeanor changed to one of pure bliss of having the workday erased from him the second he walked through the front door of their home. She remembered when he had gotten suspended from school, after treating students badly, and while he did regret taking out his home frustrations on said students, he enjoyed the time he was away from school. Eve had never seen him smile so much when they weren’t on vacation.
It had to be horrifying to see Perino smiling and actually excited to see students.
He really wants to get rid of me, Eve thought.
“This is my daughter, Eve,” Perino continued. At that, the girls’ eyes widened as they looked at each other, looked at Perino, looked at Eve, then looked back at each other. “Shocking, I know. But she’s new here and could use some friends.” Eve scowled. He was messing with her. “Eve, this is Jenna and Ali, they’ll take care of you.”
“Uh…yeah,” Ali said with a strained smile.
“Just…call us the welcoming committee,” Jenna agreed. Her smile was a little more real, but still hesitant.
Eve’s eyebrows rose. She looked to her dad and asked in a completely flat tone, “They have these here?” Ali’s smile stayed glued to her face. Jenna’s eyelashes fluttered. Perino simply held up his hands, walking away. “Hey! You can’t just leave me here!”
At that, Perino turned and smirked back towards his daughter. “You student, me teacher. I have work to do.” He turned back around and waved his hand in the air. Of which Eve wished the lid on his coffee tumbler would open and pour everywhere. “See you in class!”

omg!! congrats on 1000
Aw thank you so much!! Okay I’m just gonna list my top 10 characters that I feel are underrated by the show and the fandom itself. This isnt exactly my list of favorite characters ever so keep that in mind…
1. Johnny DiMarco - If you know anything about me, you know that Johnny is my favorite Degrassi character of all time. I could scream from the rooftops every day about how much I love him. He has done so many shitty things but he learned and grew from all of it into a decent person who is working to do better for himself. On top of that he had all that major character growth while being a background/supporting character and only had one plot from his PoV. I could literally write a book about how beautiful Johnny’s arc was but thats a completely different discussion.
2. Chantay Black - Literally the eyes and ears of Degrassi. She was around for YEARS and had so many opportunities for a great plot but never had any. Plus her and Danny were cute af. Literally her whole character was hilarious to me and I wish she had more of a plot.
3. Mike Dallas - I know a lot of other people love him too but I feel like he still doesnt get enough recognition from the fandom. He was so good to Alli and he really developed so much over his 3 seasons on the show. And seeing him be a parent to Rock was such a great plot. Oh and the racial plot he had in season 13 was one of my all time favs.
4. Tiny Bell - MY SWEET SWEET BOY. He has been through so much and he always got overshadowed by Maya and Zig and Miles and Zoe and Tristan. I would have loved to see more from his perspective on the show.
5. Jake Martin - Literally comic gold. He was so pure. Like honestly I want to find myself a Jake because he was the sweetest. He loved Mo so much and he loved his greenhouse so much. I feel like he gets forgotten a lot and people take advantage of how sweet he is to forget about him because he never got a ton of super serious plots.
6. Alex Nuñez - SO UNDERRATED. She was so strong and fearless and confident. So unafraid to be exactly who she is and she took no crap from anyone. I feel like the show treated her as Jay’s girlfriend then Paige’s girlfriend and she rarely got enough time to develop on her own without a love interest. Sure she had the stripping plot but that was really weak in my opinion. I wish they would bring her back for a reunion because I would love to see what she is doing now.
7. Coach Armstrong - HE IS SUCH A LEGEND. He has been a part of the show since DTNG season 1!! AND HE’S STILL HERE. He is apparently a math wizard AND he is well versed in every single sport on the planet. ALSO he has yet to age a single day. Give Michael Kinney all the love he deserves
8. Hazel Aden - I wish they developed her as more than just Paige’s sidekick. Her first A plot in Don’t Believe The Hype is one of my favorite episodes to date. Also her relationship with Jimmy one the only relationship of his that I actually enjoyed. I wish they would have made her a real person and not just a prop for Paige.
9. Connor DeLaurier - Oh sweet sweet Connor who I literally hated at first. I loved how the portrayed his Aspergers. And how even when he had a makeover and became hot it wasnt because all of a sudden it was like “hey I’m hot now” it had a reason and a purpose. His relationship with Jenna was so sweet and healthy and I loved it so so much. And I always enjoyed how smart Conner always was and how he was never ashamed to show it. It was always so encouraging to me personally.
10. Mr. Perino - Remember in season 6 when he has that huge altercation with Danny and Derek and we all thought he would be fired for it and he wasnt? I adored that plot because for the first time a teacher wasn’t just a background character. I loved how it showed that teachers are people too and they aren’t always right. I’ve had so many teachers over the years who have made mistakes and done things that were wrong that I disagreed with. BUT what makes me love Mr. Perino is that he took that experience and he bounced back from it. He improved himself and he changed to become a better teacher. I love how Degrassi showed that not all teachers are perfect but they are still human and they can change and fix their mistakes. He has always been known to be a little tough on his students but to me he is the most realistic teacher on the show because my teachers in high school were tough on me and they pushed me to work harder constantly and sometimes I hated them for it but they made me a better person in the long run. It’s nice to see a character like the teachers that I had on TV because it is so realistic.

Whatever It Takes (To Get Me Out Of Here) -1-
Summary - No one knew much about Mr. Perino's life other than being a teacher at Degrassi. That was just how he and his daughter, Eve, wanted it. But then he gives her the horrifically bad news that she's going to Degrassi because of redistricting, and she has to experience, first hand, all the teenage antics he tries to ignore. Eve hates Degrassi. So she's going to get expelled.
A/N: Y’all, I couldn’t help myself. I got carried away and wrote the first part of it. Your peer pressure really helped me out. Don’t expect regular updates, just when the fancy strikes me. You can give your comments in notes here or on FFN, it doesn’t matter much to me. (I may also post it to AO3). I made myself laugh too much when writing this. @ceruleanmusings @partiallypearl @witchofinterest
~~~~~
Evangeline ‘Eve’ Perino should’ve known something was going on the way her father looked at her when he entered her room after school that day. There she was, minding her own business, reading her magazine, when he had the audacity to ruin her day.
He came into her room, head tipped to the side and he looked at her from beneath his lashes, in that ‘I-have-some-bad-news-for-you’ way that she’d only seen a few times before; when he wasn’t able to get her the coveted Christmas gift that one year—she still wanted it--, when he told her she couldn’t go to the popular girl’s birthday party because he had to chaperone a school trip and she had to go with—she still hadn’t forgiven him for that, and…when he told her he was suspended pending an investigation for his treatment of two class clown students. (And not particularly in that order).
Besides, who’s business was it that her mom decided to cheat on him and run off with her affair partner, leaving them behind. It was a bad blow up, especially since Eve was the one who found out and had to tell her dad because her mom was too much of a wimp to tell him the truth.
Who wouldn’t be in a crabby mood from that? And to have to deal with class clowns on top of it?? You’d have to be a saint to deal. And her dad was no saint.
Eve was sure that was the day her dad was going to set fire to Degrassi and was sorely disappointed when he didn’t. If one of the students didn’t do it first. She was still waiting for that story to pop up. Wasn’t there some sort of boiler room explosion years ago? Lightning didn’t strike twice, did it?
Nevertheless, Eve tried to keep a glimmer of hope alive when he perched himself on the edge of her desk, resting his palms against the side. Nervously drummed his fingertips on the wood underside. Silence stretched between them.
Eve’s smile slowly faded.
“No,” she moaned. “Please, no.”
“Sorry, kiddo,” Dom said with a shrug. “Seems like you’re going to Degrassi.” Eve moaned again. “I know you’re happy at Bardell but I can’t do much about districting laws.” Eve moaned a third time, making Dom roll his eyes at her theatrics. “Don’t be such a teenager, Eve. You know I hate that.”
“Dad, even you think there’s something weird going on there. No matter how hard you try to stay out of things, things happen,” Eve pointed out. She continued to flip through her magazine, not looking at the pages. Using each sharp fwip of the page to mark her aggression. “Something in the water…some sort of brainwashing cult amongst the board of trustees…I think the entire city would collapse if there was a day that Degrassi didn’t somehow end up in the news.”
“I think you’re exaggerating.”
“CBC picked up Degrassi because of the school shooting, you think they weren’t going to pay attention to everything that happens there after that? Good or bad?”
Dom rolled his neck, audible pops and cracks breaking through the silence that stretched after her sentence. She could see the resignation set in on his face. “Look…you just have to go until you graduate and then you’re off to university and I can finally leave because I don’t know if you realize it, but student loans are a thing. They’re wiped out when I work there long enough.”
“Why do you think I’m working so hard to get good grades?”
“Because you’re the only teenager I know how has no life.”
“So I don’t make the same mistake you did by taking out loans,” Eve replied, completely ignoring his completely rude—and not entirely untrue--accusation. She tossed her magazine aside. “And I do so have a life! I can’t help it’s not as crazy as the students at that hell hole you’re trying to take me to.” Dom’s lips twitched up into a half smile. “Dad—”
“—Eve, that’s enough,” Dom said with a finality that even she wasn’t going to go toe to toe with. “First thing in the morning, you’re going to Degrassi. That’s it.” He left the room, arms folded, shaking his head. “It’s out of my hands.”
He could shake his head all he wanted, she knew how to shake her head, too. The conversation wasn’t going to end there.
Not if she had anything to say about it.
Eve flopped onto her bed, staring at the ceiling. The biggest of big pouts on her face. Then, her pout slowly turned, twisted, morphed into the most devilish smile she could muster.
You’re Dom Perino’s daughter, she reminded herself. He was one of the toughest teachers anyone had ever been taught by. Something he practically bragged about when he got the chance. Something in his demeanor had to have rubbed off on her.
If he was the toughest teacher Degrassi ever had, she was going to be the toughest student Degrassi ever had.
She was going to get expelled.
sartanhair replied to your photo “The Degrassi people have had us living a lie believing Alex Steele is...”
Do we know for sure his name isn’t Jeff Perino
See that was my first thought! But I checked, and Perino’s first name is Dom. So unless he decided to go by his middle name at some point in his life, it’s two different people.
