'...‘George Orwell’s 1984’ adapted by Joe White
Cast: Andrew Garfield, Cynthia Erivo, Andrew Scott, Tom Hardy, Chukwudi Iwuji, Romesh Ranganathan, Natasia Demetriou, Francesca Mills, Alex Lawther, Katie Leung
About this play: Starring Andrew Garfield as Winston, Cynthia Erivo as Julia, Andrew Scott as the alluring, mysterious O’Brien, and featuring Tom Hardy as Big Brother, Audible presents a new dramatization of George Orwell’s classic tale. An immersive listening experience like none you’ve heard before, at a time when it has all never felt more chillingly relevant.
Featuring a haunting original score composed by Muse’s lead singer and songwriter Matthew Bellamy and Ilan Eshkeri, recorded by the London Metropolitan Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios, the production is directed by BAFTA Award winner Destiny Ekaragha, produced in Dolby Atmos by Granny Eats Wolf, and dramatised by Olivier Award nominated writer Joe White.
Listeners are saying: “I’ve read the book, I’ve seen the movie, I’ve listened to the Simon Prebble audiobook. Nothing comes close to this production. It was 3 1/2 hours of total immersion. I can’t count the times I sat here saying Oh. My. God, Andrews Garfield and Scott are amazing. I am blown away by this.”...'

You cant fix a recording in your system.
It is obvious that once a recording is published it is fixed. Analog or digital makes no difference once it reaches your system it is what it is. If it is flawed there is little to do. Oh you can use a multiband equalizer (shudder) or a dynamic range expander (for some recordings) but that is a bandage on a broken thing. It will not fix the stereo image if it is not there.
I tripped over a nugget of information at the online TAS blog. My attention was snagged by yet another half million dollar speaker then diverted by this other thing.
I played the two tracks, A & B, as instructed and quickly chose B as preferred. It was recorded with a single stereo microphone. If you read all the blah blah on either side of the demo you get the idea.
I listened with cheap earbuds plugged into my computer. It was a very noticeable effect.
Single mike recordings are rare as it is easier to do multi mikes into huge mixing boards so things can be tracked and mixed. Faster, easier to fix mistakes and all that.
Audiophiles will spend big money and judge the quality of their system on its ability to produce a good image. This small nugget shows the basic image quality is not in the playing, but in the recording.
As an aside the funky speaker in the photo is a Linkwitz open baffle behemoth that sprays sound all over the room front and back to artificially create ambience and presumably image. I think the concept is deeply flawed.
So what does this mean? Two very good examples of single mike recordings are Trinity Sessions by Cowboy Junkies, and Jazz at the Pawn Shop (sort of). Pawnshop was recorded with several mikes but they were arrayed as ORTF pairs which are two close set angled outward and each pair is lets say a quasi-single mike. Trinity was recorded with an Ambisonic mike that has 4 cartridges arrayed in a tetrahedron. The example B was done with a Blumlein stereo mike with two cartridges at 90 degrees to each other in one case. The main thing is the actual space and phase information that captures the "image" are preserved with a singe mike. That is why they sound so good.
One is a legendary pure analog recording the other is pure digital.
The brilliant Mercury Living Presence recordings are not single mike, but otherwise minimalist with just three mikes, L, R, and Center.
It is possible in the mix and processing to fake image. Those Supertramp albums have cool effects like a saxophone moving from the back to front and left and right. But that is all studio magic.
Qsound and Dolby Atmos create effects to mimic a sound stage. There are other methods that in your system feed out of phase information through each stereo speaker to cancel out some sounds from the other side and create a virtual headphone effect. These are all fake and frankly work only for a limited listening position. Headphones work too.
This resolves down to getting recordings that are done certain ways to get a good honest image. You may like a given musical performance but the image can be real or fake. An example of a good fake recording is "Diana Krall in Paris." Listen to how the image is portrayed in the mix then look at the photo of the band on stage.
Oh another anti-example is Getz / Gilberto. Very Naive recording some studio ambiance, but Astrud's vocal is hard to one side. Weird, but that is the way it was made. Actually not stereo. I think the original release was monophonic and Stereo was so new.
Fool me once shame on me.

Peter Gabriel announces his first album of new material in over 20 years
i/o releases on 1 December, 2023
i/o is 12 tracks of grace, gravity and great beauty that provide welcome confirmation of not only Peter’s ongoing ability to write stop-you-in-your-tracks songs but also of that thrilling voice, still perfectly, delightfully intact. Throughout the album the intelligent and thoughtful – often thought-provoking – songs tackle life and the universe. Our connection to the world around us – ‘I’m just a part of everything’ Peter sings on title track i/o – is a recurring motif, but so too the passing of time, mortality and grief, alongside such themes as injustice, surveillance and the roots of terrorism. But this is not a solemn record. While reflective, the mood is never despondent; i/o is musically adventurous, often joyous and ultimately full of hope, topped off as it is, by the rousingly optimistic closing song, Live and Let Live.
Recorded mostly at Real World Studios and Peter’s home studio, the lengthy gestation of i/o means it has a sizeable cast list. Peter has kept his trusty inner circle of musicians close to hand, which means guitarist David Rhodes, bassist Tony Levin and drummer Manu Katché are sterling presences throughout. Several songs bear the fingerprints of long-time associate Brian Eno, whilst there are notable contributions from Richard Russell, pianist Tom Cawley, trumpeters Josh Shpak and Paolo Fresu, cellist Linnea Olsson and keyboard player Don E. Peter’s daughter Melanie contributes warm backing vocals, as does Ríoghnach Connolly of The Breath, while Real World regulars Richard Chappell, Oli Jacobs, Katie May and Richard Evans collectively provide programming and play various instruments. Soweto Gospel Choir and Swedish all-male choir Oprhei Drängar lend their magnificent harmonies to a selection of tracks, and the mass strings of the New Blood Orchestra, led by John Metcalfe, both soothe and soar.
Renowned for being a boundary-pushing artist, i/o is not simply a collection of a dozen songs. All 12 tracks are subject to two stereo mixes: the Bright-Side Mix, handled by Mark ‘Spike’ Stent, and the Dark-Side Mix, as reshaped by Tchad Blake. “We have two of the greatest mixers in the world in Tchad and Spike and they definitely bring different characters to the songs. Tchad is very much a sculptor building a journey with sound and drama, Spike loves sound and assembling these pictures, so he’s more of a painter.” Both versions are included on the double-CD package, and are also available separately as double vinyl albums. And that’s not all. A third version – the In-Side Mix, in Dolby Atmos, comes courtesy of Hans-Martin Buff “doing a wonderful job generating these much more three-dimensional mixes” and is included in three-disc set, including Blu-ray.
Continuing the idea developed for Peter’s US and UP albums, he has again invited a range of visual artists to contribute a piece of art to accompany the music and each of i/o’s 12 songs were handed to a world-renowned artist to create an accompanying work, whether paint, photography, sculpture or even Plasticine. The dozen artists make an exceedingly impressive team of collaborators: Ai Weiwei, Nick Cave, Olafur Eliasson, Henry Hudson, Annette Messager, Antony Micallef, David Moreno, Cornelia Parker, Megan Rooney, Tim Shaw, David Spriggs and Barthélémy Toguo.
Another visual link with Peter’s past work is the cover shot. Taken by photographer Nadav Kander, it echoes with the covers of his earlier albums, always present but, with the exception of So, intriguingly obscured or manipulated.
These echoes of the past might resonate, but i/o is fundamentally an album of – and for – the here and now. Many of its themes may be timeless, but they’re also warnings that we’re living on borrowed time, both as a planet and as individuals.

Recording Assessment
Due: Friday, 12 January 2024, 3:00 PM
Taking into account the content and focus of the module:
Submit audio/project files that exhibit your finished audio outcomes (totalling ~8 minutes)
And
Submit a video file with rigorous reflections upon the technical and creative aspects of your portfolio (~ 8-10 minutes).
The Audio Outcome
Your audio outcomes should comprise 2 fully recorded, edited, processed, mixed, audio projects.
Audio Outcome 1:
A performance that should have taken place and been recorded in an interior non-studio environment, The potential outcomes here are deliberately broad, and we encourage you to check with the module tutor if in doubt about a project you have in mind.
You may decide to take a neutral documentary approach – focussing on mixing and editing – an approach with what we might term an intent to pursue a high degree of fidelity or truth. At the other end of the spectrum, you may decide to augment the recordings with processed material or additional musical elements. Whatever you choose, the original recording of the performance should remain the focus of the final audio outcome, and any additional elements should act in service of the original performance.
Submit lossless audio files at 48kHz 24-bit stereo interleaved or Dolby Atmos ADM BWF.
Audio Outcome 2:
A non-linear soundscape composition project in Fmod (~4 minute linear flow)
OR
A linear soundscape composition project submitted in .wav/.aif/.adm (~4-6 minutes) @ 24-bit 48kHz or 44.1kHz.
There is a high degree of flexibility in how you approach this project, and the content that can be included - speak to Philip Reeder if in any doubt about the suitability of your project.
However, a substantive part of the audio should derive from recordings you have made of exterior soundscapes. You may decide to take an approach that focusses on fidelity – with meticulous recording, mixing and editing.
At the other end of the spectrum (and just as meticulous) you may decide to augment the recordings with original processed material or additional original musical elements, with a focus on e.g. game, live soundscape music, or multimedia applications.
If you choose to use fmod, the fmod project should have a 3-4 minute linear flow of non-repeating material, but possess interactive or adaptive elements.
Submit an fmod project with all associated assets for stereo, binaural, or a surround sound format agreed with the module tutor.
It is recommended to also submit an FMod walkthrough video, that demonstrates your project as if it were a performance of the project.
Research and Development Video
Each student will be marked on individual professionalism as demonstrated throughout the preproduction, production, and postproduction process, as evidenced by regular attendance and participation in class sessions and meeting module checkpoints. Your R&D should spend ~1 minute detailing this aspect.
Your video should give an account of the research and development undertaken in producing the audio outcomes. To illustrate your narration, you may find it helpful to document recording sessions through salient photographs/video and/or diagrams where appropriate, and give justifications for chosen microphones and techniques that refer to independent research and material learnt on the module of both a technical and artistic nature. Decisions made in post should be articulated and justified with reference to industry standards and artistic practice. Your R&D should spend ~7 minutes detailing these aspects. A bibliography should also be included at the end as a static image embedded in the video.
Project checkpoints must be met in person in weeks:
5 - Multi microphone technique evaluation (check week 1 slides page 4)
TBC - Field recording project discussion (discussion slide)
TBC - Presentation of progress and peer discussion (audio)
Submission checklist:
Audio:
1 x audio files
1 x fmod project with assets OR 1 x soundscape audio file
Documentation:
1 x video file (~8-10 minutes)
How your assessment will be marked
Audio Outcome: Your audio outcome should employ appropriate production aesthetics, technical, and stylistic approaches. Ensure impeccable sonic outcomes, with appropriate dynamic range, spectral balance, fidelity, creative choices, and edits for the given material. (70%)
Project Management: Each student will be marked on individual professionalism as demonstrated throughout the preproduction, production, and postproduction process, as evidenced by regular attendance and participation in class sessions and meeting module checkpoints. You should detail briefly how you met the Project Management criteria in your R&D. (15%)
Research and Development: The R&D should give justifications for chosen microphones and techniques that refer to independent research and material learnt on the module, with relevant and useful photos/video. Decisions made in post should be articulated and justified with reference to industry standards and artistic practice. A bibliography should also be included at the end. This R&D aspect should be detailed in your reflection. (15%)
A student passing this module should be able to:
1. Evidence ability to formulate analytical responses to the capture of sound.
2. Demonstrate an advanced level of ability in the capture of sound.
3. Sophisticated understanding of sound – microphone interactions under a variety of conditions.
4. Exemplify professionalism and best practice while following industry workflows and standards.

The Future of Pro Audio: Trends to Watch
At this fast speed where technology is moving forward, the professional audio industry must be ready for a radical shift. For that reason, it's highly necessary for audio engineers, musicians, and content creators to see their current situation in order to move ahead and thrive within this ever-changing landscape. This blog will discuss many important trends that are shaping the future of pro audio-innovation in technology, consumer behavior shifts, and changes in industry practices.
1. The Rise of Immersive Audio
One of the more exciting audio innovations is the new wave of immersive sound experience that has taken over, with technologies like Dolby Atmos and Sony 360 Reality Audio shaping the new generation of listening. Immersive audio, unlike stereo audio, limits sound to just two channels; rather, it places or moves sound in a three-dimensional space to create a realistic environment.
The wide adoption of such formats by streaming services would catalyze many artists and producers to experiment with such formats, and so improve the listener's experience and open new creative areas in music production. The increasing use of virtual and augmented realities will also likely raise the demand for immersive audio and open a new path toward content creation.
2. Advancements in Audio Interfaces and DAWs
Indeed, one can never overstate the advancement of DAWs and audio interfaces. Recording and production quality are now easier to reach than ever before. Software and hardware innovations continue to offer a steadily decreasing bar of entry into the audio industry. Most DAWs offer cloud collaboration, where musicians and producers work from different parts of the world but still collaborate in real time.
Audio interfaces too have evolved in sophistication and features, including the likes of low-latency monitoring, built-in effects, and good-quality preamps. Bringing these tools within a more affordable and accessible price range will enable many more artists to produce high-quality audio from home studios, again leveling the playing field for the industry.
3. Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
It appears that Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are finally beginning to seriously take hold in the pro audio environment. Automatic mixing and mastering services, intelligent, smart audio plugins that can analyze and enhance the sound, AI makes relatively tedious tasks much easier, without needing extensive expertise.
Take, for instance LANDR and iZotope's Ozone. With the former, you get recommendations on audio processing which are ready to produce near-professional results with minimal effort. As these technologies continue to be enhanced, one would even be producing artistic results; and in the process, free the creative professional from too much labor-intensive work over mere creativity that defines the professional.
4. Sustainable Practices in Audio Production
The world has increasingly become more focused on sustainability, and the audio world hasn't been an exception. Eco-friendly raw materials used for manufacturing audio equipment, energy-efficient recording studios, and energy-conserving production are becoming increasingly important in attempts to make audio productions less environmentally taxing.
Companies are starting to embrace renewable sources of energy, recycle old gear, and much more. That would not only be in line with international efforts for the prevention of global warming but also chime well with conscious consumers who pay attention to what they're buying. Moreover, that's a trend that may make even more artists approach sustainability as a theme for their art in the light of this industry shift green.
5. Increased Demand for Live Streaming and Remote Collaboration
The pandemic has basically changed how we create and consume music. Colossal significance to livestream and collaborate remotely have been drawn, and this is now a trend. Artists went to platforms like Twitch and YouTube, where their audiences await their streams, and that trend is here to stay.
The better the technology, the finer will the audio and video quality be, which will add to the beauty of virtual performances. In addition, this will open up opportunities for artists to reach a global audience and combine music from people separated by great distances. More hybrid events that combine in-person and virtual experiences are to be expected and will increase levels of reach and engagement.
6. The Proliferation of Podcasts and Audiobooks
The podcasting and audiobooks explosion has opened up a booming market in professional audio production. As the listeners keep increasing usage both for entertainment and educational benefits, quality audio is in rising demand. It has opened new avenues for audio engineers, voice actors, and sound designers with this new trend.
This has also led to an upswing in branding and sound design. Unique audio signatures, professional soundscapes, and engaging editing are becoming more key in standing out in a crowded market. It will become crucial for content creators to invest in quality production if they are to build an audience and establish credibility.
7. Enhanced User Experience with Smart Devices
Audio technology, like most other products around us, is not an exception to the increasing smartness that they evolve with. The rapidly progressing innovation in its domain has made users expect better audio qualities while interacting with their smart speakers or savoring music through headphones called upon with voice assistants. As a result, audio manufacturers face pressure as they need to produce high-quality audio-integrated products as well that integrate seamlessly with smart home ecosystems.
As more people are using voice commands and AI-powered assistants in their audio devices, consumers require compatibility and interoperability among more platforms. The future of pro audio products will likely be designed for consumer's needs, making it possible for them to enjoy their favorite audio content easily.
8. Focus on Diversity and Inclusion in Audio
For a long time, the audio industry has been called out for being a homogeneous and unrepresentative field. Rising consciousness and dedication are changing this tide, and organizations and initiatives to support underrepresented voices in audio are taking off, bringing so many more diverse experiences in the industry.
With the embracing of diversity by the industry, it will see more creativity and innovation from a more complex tapestry. It enhances the artistic landscape but promotes a more inclusive community that allows all voices to be heard. Consequently, we can expect a more diverse audio content because it brings out assorted backgrounds and experiences.
Summary
The future is good and full of potential for pro audio. It remains an exciting time for immersive audio experiences and AI advancements, focus on sustainability as much as diversity, and many other developments happening within the industry. Keeping track of these trends is, therefore, very essential to navi-gating the still-changing landscape.
The future is about embracing innovation and sticking to the artistry that defines the audio world. From seasoned pros to newcomers, there's no end to what one can be creative with in terms of quality collaborations; this exciting audio world awaits you.

Amazon Music HD vs. Competitors: Which High-Resolution Service Is Right for You?
In today’s digital age, the demand for high-quality audio streaming has never been higher. As music lovers increasingly seek out better sound experiences, streaming platforms have responded by offering higher-resolution audio options. Amazon Music HD is one of the leading contenders in this space, promising to deliver superior sound quality that rivals the clarity and richness of physical media like CDs and vinyl. But with so many options available, is upgrading to Amazon Music HD really worth it? This article delves into the features, benefits, and overall value of Amazon Music HD, helping you decide whether it’s the right choice for your listening needs.
Section 1: Overview of Amazon Music HD’s Features
Amazon Music HD is a premium tier of Amazon’s music streaming service that focuses on providing high-resolution audio. Unlike the standard Amazon Music service, which offers tracks in compressed formats such as MP3, Amazon Music HD streams music in lossless formats. This means the audio is delivered without the compression that typically reduces the quality of digital music files.
Amazon Music HD offers two levels of audio quality:
HD Audio: This format provides CD-quality sound at 16-bit/44.1 kHz. It’s a step up from typical streaming services, which often compress audio to save on data usage and storage space.
Ultra HD Audio: For those seeking an even more immersive experience, Ultra HD offers better-than-CD-quality sound, with a bit depth of 24-bit and sample rates ranging from 44.1 kHz to 192 kHz.
In addition to these high-quality audio formats, Amazon Music HD boasts a vast library of over 70 million songs available in HD and millions of tracks in Ultra HD. Users can also enjoy 3D Audio, a feature that provides an even more enveloping listening experience through Dolby Atmos and Sony 360 Reality Audio formats.
Section 2: Technical Breakdown of Amazon Music HD’s Sound Quality
To truly appreciate what Amazon Music HD offers, it’s essential to understand the technical aspects of sound quality. The terms “bit depth” and “sample rate” are key to grasping how much more detail and clarity you get from HD and Ultra HD tracks compared to standard streaming.
Bit Depth: Bit depth refers to the number of bits of information in each sample, which determines the dynamic range of the audio. A higher bit depth, like the 24-bit used in Ultra HD, captures more of the nuances in the music, resulting in clearer and more detailed sound.
Sample Rate: The sample rate is the number of times per second the audio is sampled. Higher sample rates allow for a broader frequency range, which means the audio can more accurately reproduce the original recording. While CD quality is at 44.1 kHz, Ultra HD can go up to 192 kHz, offering a richer soundscape.
By providing both HD and Ultra HD options, Amazon Music HD ensures that listeners can access music in a format that closely replicates the original studio recordings, offering an experience that’s far superior to what you’d get from most other streaming services.
Section 3: Comparison with Competitors
Amazon Music HD isn’t the only service offering high-resolution audio, but how does it stack up against the competition? Let’s compare it to some of the leading alternatives:
Spotify HiFi: Spotify announced plans to introduce its HiFi tier, but it has yet to be widely released. When it does launch, Spotify HiFi will likely offer CD-quality audio, similar to Amazon Music HD’s standard HD tier. However, without Ultra HD or 3D Audio options, it may fall short for audiophiles.
Tidal HiFi and Tidal Masters: Tidal has long been a favorite among audiophiles for its HiFi tier, which offers CD-quality sound, and its Masters tier, which provides even higher-resolution audio. Tidal also features MQA (Master Quality Authenticated) files, which claim to offer the original studio master quality. However, Amazon Music HD’s Ultra HD tracks are a strong competitor, especially with the inclusion of 3D Audio.
Apple Music Lossless: Apple Music recently introduced Lossless and Hi-Res Lossless tiers, offering audio quality similar to Amazon Music HD. However, Amazon Music HD’s integration with Alexa and availability across a wide range of devices gives it a slight edge in terms of accessibility and convenience.
When considering these competitors, Amazon Music HD stands out for its combination of HD and Ultra HD options, extensive library, and additional features like 3D Audio, all at a competitive price point.
Section 4: User Testimonials and Expert Opinions
Real-world experiences can be one of the most compelling reasons to try a service. Here are some testimonials from users and opinions from experts who have tried Amazon Music HD:
User Testimonial 1: “As someone who used to swear by vinyl, I was skeptical about digital music services. But after switching to Amazon Music HD, I’ve been blown away by the clarity and depth of the tracks. It’s like hearing my favorite songs for the first time again.”
User Testimonial 2: “The difference between standard streaming and Amazon Music HD is night and day. The Ultra HD tracks, in particular, bring out details I never noticed before. It’s worth every penny.”
Expert Opinion 1: “Amazon Music HD provides a solid value proposition for those looking to upgrade their listening experience. The combination of HD and Ultra HD tracks, along with 3D Audio, makes it a top choice for audiophiles.”
Expert Opinion 2: “While Tidal and Apple Music have their merits, Amazon Music HD’s seamless integration with Alexa and its competitive pricing make it an attractive option for high-resolution audio enthusiasts.”
These testimonials and expert opinions highlight the positive impact that Amazon Music HD can have on your music listening experience, particularly if you value high-quality sound.
Conclusion
Upgrading to Amazon Music HD offers a significant leap in audio quality for listeners who are passionate about music. The service provides a rich and immersive experience with its HD and Ultra HD tracks, extensive music library, and unique features like 3D Audio. While other high-resolution streaming services exist, Amazon Music HD’s combination of quality, convenience, and price makes it a compelling choice.
