how i go about making vtuber assets!

so i just wanted to go about and vaguely explain how i think of and design the assets that i make for my ko-fi shop.

a lot of the time, i try two things:

1. to think of things that would cater to a certain broad sweep of vtubers that can be described like [adjective]-tubers. pinktubers, dogtubers, cattubers, sakuratubers, bluetubers, succubustubers, etc. this is like a super simplified of version of something called a customer profile that is often used in marketing.

or

2. to think of things that cater to a certain broad sweep of things that vtubers do or have on their channels a lot. for example, many many vtubers have hydration redeems, snack redeems, toss redeems, expression toggles, bonk redeems, etc. finding out which of these things tend to trend around the vtuber streaming scene can be super helpful in asset making as well.

you can also make this as niche or as specific as you want, although can be a dual edged sword. making something super generic means that it can be spread and utilized by lots of people in a wider group, but may end up diluted in the massive pool of people you're casting your net to. however, more niche items could easily drawn in lots of usage and spread around a specific crowd, but may not be applicable to a wide range of users. i recommend starting wide and narrowing down; getting your stuff at least seen by lots of people helps with brand recognition, while catering to a niche can help with building a smaller yet loyal-er audience.

let's get an example going. one of the first assets that i made that got really popular was the sakura petal pack that could be imported into the twitch integrated throwing system for on-stream use.

at first, i hadn't realized how much of a niche i was catering to; i just wanted to make cute things. however, i quickly realized how many sakura-themed vtubers (sakuratubers? lol) there were that appreciated assets that fit in with their particular branding. it quickly gained a considerable amount of traction (with a good bit of help from the ENVtuber and VTuberAssets hashtags), and lead to a good deal of traffic to my asset shop.

another thing that definitely seems to help in making assets: i made it free. keeping things away from a paywall helps incentivize a wide range of people to use it, but i gave people the option to leave a tip behind if they so chose.

all in all, catering to a niche, using popular tags, and making your assets pay-what-you-want priced all generally seem to be my go-to for making assets that get noticed, used, and spread around! this isn't a one-size-fits-all miracle solution, of course, but i hope that it helps give you asset makers some inspiration!

Wallace and Gromit AU

A couple of people expressed interest, specifically @letthefandomsbegin and @little-anxious-cloud, so here we go:

Logan is Wallace. An eccentric, introverted and slightly awkward inventor. Instead of a love of cheese, he has a love of Crofters.

He tries his best, but inventing machines with no flaws is hard when you don’t have a large budget.

Has big asperations, and hopes to one day be regarded as a great scientist.

Virgil is Gromit. Logan’s loyal, cautious and mute dog, who often has to save Logan when inventions go awry.

To be honest, Logan probably would have accidentally killed himself ten times over if Virgil hadn’t been there.

Spends his free time listening to music, scrolling through Pupblr and watching DogTube.

Now, to the three stories in this AU and the other characters in them:

The Wrong Trousers

Deceit is Feathers McGraw. Only, in this AU, he’s not a penguin, but a snake.

Like Feathers disguised himself as a chicken when committing crimes, Deceit disguises himself as a large centipede by sticking on pipe cleaners to his sides to look like legs.

Small plot outline for those who don’t know: Deceit moves into Logan and Virgil’s home when they rent out a room to pay the bills. However, he is actually a wanted criminal, and uses Logan’s newest invention - robotic trousers - to control Logan while he’s asleep and make him steal a priceless diamond. Hijinks ensue, Logan and Virgil capture Deceit, and they turn him into the police.

Curse of the Were-Rabbit

Patton is Lady Tottington. He’s the Lord of the area, and is a big animal lover. He is also very fond of Logan.

I don’t know who could be Victor Quartermaine. I was thinking Remus at first, but then I realised he fit another character much better. Any ideas would be great.

Plot Outline: Logan and Virgil run a humane pest control business, that is in the busy season for capturing rabbits with a vegetable competition and festival coming up. Not long after Logan trying out a new invention, a large beast starts destroying people’s gardens and eating the things grown there: a were-rabbit. Victor, a local hunting enthusiast, offers to kill it, but Patton lays the task on Logan and Virgil instead, not wanting the creature to be hurt. However, it is soon revealed to both Virgil and Victor that the were-rabbit is actually Logan, who transforms under the light of the moon, loses control of himself, and goes on a rampage. This is something caused by his invention malfunctioning. It’s up to Virgil to save the festival, stop Victor from killing Logan, and turn Logan back to normal.

Unlike the original film, at the end of this story, Logan and Patton actually get together! Whoo!

Matter of Loaf and Death

Remus is Piella Bakewell. He used to be the spokesperson for the Bake-o-Lite bread company. However, after numerous complaints from co-workers about his rather “demented” behaviour on set, he was fired.

Roman is Fluffles, Remus’ pet poodle. He’s strong and capable, but his owner abuses him to be quiet and subservient. He becomes very smitten with Virgil when he meets him.

Plot Outline: After shutting down their pest control business, Logan is inspired by Patton teaching him how to bake and opens up, well, a bakery. However, Logan and Patton eventually break up. One day, as Logan and Virgil are out making deliveries, they see Remus, whose breaks are failing on his bike just as he’s going down a steep hill. Logan and Virgil save him and Roman, and Logan becomes smitten fast. Virgil, however, grows suspicious as the breaks on Remus’ bike seem fine. However, as the days go by, Logan and Remus form a quick romance, and Remus even redecorates their house and moves some of his stuff in. One day, Remus leaves his bag behind, and Logan tasks Virgil to return it. At Remus’ house, Virgil finds out Remus is a murderer: he had killed twelve bakers and was planning to kill Logan last as his baker’s dozen. Virgil tries to protect Logan, but his owner puts it down to paranoia. Havoc ensues as Remus repeatedly tries to kill Logan and Virgil has to save him with help from Roman

Again, it drifts from the original plot with, a couple months after, Logan and Patton having a second and better try at their relationship, while Virgil and Roman stay a strong pairing.
