As temperatures are set to soar this weekend, make sure you walk your dogs in the morning or evening when its cooler (as early and as late as possible), take plenty of water and try and find shady places to walk. Avoid the pavement that has been exposed to prolonged sunlight as much as possible, as it can burn dogs pads. Heatstroke comes on quickly and can be fatal. Please don't take them out in the car, or leave them shut in. Even with the window cracked, a dog will still overheat. "If you leave your dog in a car, you deserve a hefty fine, points on your licence and be forced to sit in the same conditions for half an hour, so you know how trapped they are and how horrific it feels to be desperate to escape! If I see it, I'll wait with the dog for 5 minutes. If I see you leave the car, I'll ask you how long you plan to leave them there. If I can't catch up with you to ask, I'll time you and take your registration details for the RSPCA because they aren't safe with your actions. If you're not back within those 5 minutes, I won't hesitate to call the police.

It could take the police 5 - 10 minutes to arrive (if not longer). If you're still not back, it proves even more so that you don't care enough about the survival of your family member - same goes for children.

There is genuinely no excuse for leaving a dog in the car on a mildly warm day, let alone a hot one, for longer than it takes to post a letter in a letter box or fill up with petrol. Any longer than that, like you being stuck in a long queue, go back to your car and get your dog out or someone will hopefully get the police to do it for you. The health of your dog/child must be a priority over anything else you're doing while they're stuck in a hot car.

It doesn't matter if your car has the windows open, is in the shade and has water in for your dog/child - IT CAN KILL THEM! It can take only 10 minutes to start causing serious harm. DO NOT DO IT!"
