this role is abundant in fiction, where an animal companion's species will often be presented ambiguously or altogether irrelevant, and they are generally treated as intelligently on par with the human (or other sapient) characters, just unable to produce language (though usually with perfect comprehension)

which is why "petplay" is even coherent as an umbrella category, since roleplay which took a more biologically grounded approach to its animal characters would create scenes so divergent as to make the category almost useless

I think you can see this in the way that "ponyplay" often ends up being carved out as separate category from "petplay," - they're two different idioms of the human-animal relationship: domestication and personal ownership.  so rather than having categories per-animal, we have categories per-idiom; with the specific animal just being used as aesthetic sugar

what's interesting is that a third idiom - that of hunter and prey - is also attested, but usually in more explicitly furry contexts (whereas petplay is typically furry-adjacent at best)
