We haven’t done a deep-see species in a bit, so let’s do it. Also, funny that AC has done two fish with “splendid” in their names, and I’m here in my fish corner entertaining myself. Not sure if these fishies really are splendid, but the people who named them must think they are! So, today we’ll cover the Splendid Alfonsio, a fish that appeared in AC Pocket Camp for longer than a few days, from December 2021 to March 2022. I like how AC compensates for the fact deep sea fish appearing close enough inshore for you to fish them up from the beach is extremely unlikely, by having them show up in the winter when it’s dark and cold like their actual habitat. Who knows...maybe it will come back next winter!

The Splendid Alfonsio is named to species (Beryx splendens). This fish is a member of the Order Beryciformes, a group of nocturnal and/or deep water fish. These include squirrelfish and the Pineapplefish we covered a little bit ago. This group has a circumglobal (aka appears all around the world) distribution in the tropics and temperate regions. The Splendid Alfonsio is a native to the Indo-Pacific’s deeper water near the continental slope, or the area where shallow waters near land suddenly plunge down to the abyssal plain. Here, splendid alfonsio hang out around 25 and 1,250 metres (82 and 4,101 ft). Because of the depths it prefers, not much is really known about this fish, though research is happening, mostly because there is a fishery for this species. The more we know about a species’ life history (aka what it does during its life and how it does those things, and at what age/size) the better the fishery can be managed. Nevertheless, the Splendid Alfonsio is popular as a sushi fish in Japan - called kinmedai or golden eye snapper - and so explains why it makes an appearance in AC as well as other games, like Endless Ocean!

Now, the first thing you may notice about the Splendid Alfonsio (SA) is its giant eyes that take up most of its face. If you’ve been reading along or know a little bit about the deep sea, you’ll be familiar with the fact that deep sea animals take everything to the extreme in order to survive in their extreme environment. When it comes to eyes, fish either evolve huge ones so they can see in the dark or they have tiny eyes with very poor eyesight if any at all because there ain’t anything to see down there anyway. For the SA, those big eyes can let in a lot of light, which is helpful in the dark when you need every photon you can get. Not only that, but the SA also has a special reflective layer in its eyes called the  ‘tapetum lucidum’ that reflects any captured light back through the eye to give the organ a chance to get the best picture possible in low-light conditions. Many nocturnal animals that rely on their eyesight still will have this layer. This layer is why your cat’s and dog’s eyes glow when you take a photo of them with flash. If you could take pics of the SA anytime you wanted in the deep depths where it lives, they would also show some eyeshine.

001. how long ago did you start reading fanfiction? writing fanfiction? oh man. i’m not sure exactly but my memory is that i started reading fanfic in 8th grade when i was 13 and living in south florida. and i started writing my own fanfic that summer (2005) that i turned 14. sooo...i’ve been reading and writing fanfic for 15+ years??? oh damn. 

007. do you prefer to read short fics or long fics? LONG FICS!! literally the first thing i do when i discover a new fandom or ship is to search through ao3 by word count. i just really love to settle in and read something long (and i’m talking...crazy long. i have read fics that are over 1,000,000 words before and i fucking love it). 

011. how do you come up with your fic titles? oh basically all of my fic titles are from songs. so show me (family) is from the song ho hey by the lumineers. take my hand (take my everything) is from slip away by perfume genius. taste my beating heart is from howl by florence +the machine. some of my older fic titles are just grabbed from the body of the story. 

the only interesting story is from: hands split and bless on curving man. that title comes from this outdoor book festival i stumbled across in london? and they had this archway that you could walk through and people were taping together pieces of paper with different words on them and hanging the chains from the ceiling of the archway. which meant that when you walked through it you were literally walking through poetry. “hands split and bless on curving man” was the poem i strung together and hung, and then eventually i used it for a supernatural fic framed around the winchester family and their hands. 

032. copy and paste your top three favorite lines/jokes/sentences you’ve ever written. what fics do they come from?

034. how much of yourself and your life experiences do you put into your writing? what do you think your readers’ image of you is? sometimes it depends. in my most recent fic so show me (family) i put A LOT of my own experiences into the story. specifically most of buck’s injuries and childhood experiences (check: i’ve fallen down a flight of stairs multiple times, once drunkenly at a party trying to lean against a wall that wasn’t there and once stone cold sober carrying a vacuum cleaner that resulted in a broken face. in high school my friends and i got caught drinking in the woods on private property and escaped the cops by running into the trees. i broke my elbow as a kid and (unlike buck) i told my parents immediately but we waited a night before taking me to a hospital. and i chose to start going by my nickname in 9th grade and didn’t give my parents a heads up before they went to a back to school event). 

in taste your beating heart there’s a throwaway line about how stiles “brought home a dead raccoon when he was six and asked if he could keep it” which is kIND OF GNARLY but based on a story of me when i was 5 petting a dead opposum in our backyard because i thought it was a sleeping dog and asked my dad if it could be our pet. SO. 

i’m sure there’s more out there but those are the examples that stick out in my head right now.

039. what’s something about your writing that you pride yourself on? i think i’ve got an ear for dialogue. growing up i always liked to kind of daydream fake conversations between me and my crushes or celebrities i liked or whoever. and i donno, i just feel like over time i’ve gotten to know the rhythm of conversations and such? sometimes i’ll read fics and the conversation can feel stilted or overly written and i’m sure my dialogue isn’t perfect but it’s something i don’t have a hard time with. sometimes when i’m writing a scene the dialogue will come to me so fast i’ll end up just writing down all the dialogue in a rush and then go back and fill the prose in later. (that’s what happened with the eddie+maddie scene in take my hand (take my everything)).

1. Microsoft is reportedly being investigated by US authorities for potential bribery and corruption over software sales in Hungary. The Department of Justice and SEC are probing how the company sold software like Word and Excel to firms who then sold them on to Hungarian government agencies, the Washington Post reports.

2. Leaked documents and interviews show Facebook's struggle to moderate two billion accounts. A large-scale Motherboard investigation dove into the heart of Facebook's moderation struggles.

3. Lisa Brennan-Jobs revealed more details from her memoir about life with her father Steve Jobs. A new memoir titled "Small Fry," written by Steve Jobs' daughter, Lisa Brennan-Jobs, provides a brutal window into the Apple cofounder's relationship with his child.

4. Facebook has hired a new CMO to try and repair its image after its scandal-filled year. Facebook has hired a new Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), Antonio Lucio who previously held the same role at HP, and was at Visa and Pepsi before that.

5. Sony is relaunching the "Aibo" robot dog released in 1999, and it says the new version uses 'deep learning' and has cloud-based memories. The "Aibo" was originally discontinued in 2006, this is an updated model of the robot dog companion, which saw a release in Japan last year.

6. A ton of Tesla employees are getting poached by Apple, once dubbed the "Tesla Graveyard" by Elon Musk. Tesla and Apple compete for the same talent in fields like software, batteries, supply chain, and mechanical engineering.

7. It looks like Microsoft is planning a new 'Xbox All Access' monthly subscription which includes a console. According to Windows Central and The Verge, the subscription would include an Xbox console, Xbox Live Gold and Xbox Game Pass subscriptions — and it would be cheaper than buying each item individually.

8. Russian trolls were discovered to be "spreading discord" about vaccinations online. Researchers at George Washington University discovered the Russian accounts, which disseminated both pro- and anti-vaccine content.

9. The wood pellet salesman who spent more than three years as a fugitive after being charged with trying to defraud Mark Zuckerberg out of 50% of Facebook has been arrested in Ecuador. The New York man may be extradited.

10. Apple is making a TV show out of the book that inspired Elon Musk to go to space. The series will be based on "Foundation," a classic 1951 novel by Issac Asimov, which is considered a cornerstone of science-fiction.
