Part One ThirtyThree
Prompt from @bookworm0690 and @after-the-end-times
“Stevie love!”
“Yeah?”
“It’s snowing!”
The phone starts to ring as Steve heads to the window, so Steve diverts to answer it. “Steve! It’s snowing!”
“Hey Robs, and yeah, Eddie just told me.”
“Do you think it’ll be bad? The forecast says it’ll come down heavy. Do you think we will get a snow day tomorrow?”
“I think Keith would expect us to open even if we had to find a sled and a team of dogs to get us there.”
“Poop.”
“Yeap. But I’ll see how the roads are in the morning, if it’s bad then fuck it, I’m not risking the beemer. Who’s going to want to rent a movie anyway?”
“Okay, call me in the morning? Chrissy already said she’s not bothering to open the shop if it’s bad, who goes out in the snow to buy flowers?”
“I don’t know, the same people who go out in the snow to rent movies, probably. But, yeah, she’s probably right.”
“Okay, bye dingus, love you.”
“Love you too Robs.”
Eddie practically has his face smushed against the window, “cold water,” he informs Steve.
“Yeah, yeah that’s right,” Steve watches the snow start to gather in patches on the lawn with dawning apprehension that he can’t place. There’s no reason for it, really. They’re safe and warm inside, and Steve knows without looking that they have a good weeks worth of groceries in the house. The main roads will probably be plowed before lunch time tomorrow at the latest, so none of that is what's worrying him.
It really starts coming down, thick heavy flakes that start to blanket everything, and as the snow banks, Steve thinks more about last year. Was it around now that Eddie was getting sick? Steve can’t quite place the time line, but he remembers how cold he’d been, sitting outside next to the pool, his missing toes throb with phantom pain, and Steve shivers. Eddie was getting sicker as the snow fell, and Steve remembers holding him, bundled in a blanket at the back door, so he could see the snow, “I’m going to make us hot chocolate,” Steve says to distract himself.
“Whizzy cream?” Eddie asks absently.
“Sure baby.”
The next day, the world is clean and white and quiet. The gray sky is bright where the sun shines through the clouds, reflecting off the snow; it makes the whole world hard to look at.
“Stevie can we go out?”
“Out in the snow?”
“I want to walk on it.”
“Leave footprints everywhere?” Eddie nods enthusiastically. “We could make snow angels. And snow men.”
Eddie turns to look at Steve, “snow men? Snow angels?”
“Oh man, you’re gonna’ love this.”
Eddie’s frizzy curls are sticking out from under his woolen hat, and his jeans are tucked into a pair of Steve’s boots. He had managed all of thirty seconds outside before he wanted his sunglasses, so he’s wearing those too. Steve gets it, it is bright out here, what with all the white, and Eddie’s eyes are, even now, very sensitive to the light.
Eddie’s licking a snowball. Under normal circumstances, Steve might stop him, but the snow out here in the yard is fresh and clean, so Steve lets it go.
Steve flops onto his back, Eddie letting out a surprised laugh at the sight, and then he comes closer, watching as Steve moves his arms and legs, getting up again to reveal the shape he’s left behind, “see, snow angels.”
“Huh,” Eddie says, not seeming that impressed by it.
“We could build a snow man?”
“Which man is it?”
Steve snorts a laugh, “uhm...no. It can be anyone I guess, but usually it’s like a generic snow...person. We can give him a carrot for a nose and, like, maybe a scarf?”
Eddie frowns, “what, in case he gets cold?” he looks bemused by the idea.
“Come on, I’ll show you...and I really think we need to get around to watching some Christmas movies.”
The moment Eddie grasps the idea of what Steve’s showing him, he’s away. He digs up twigs and rocks and things from under the lighter snow banked between the trees, happily giving his creations arms and eyes and mouths and...eyebrows.
“No no,” he directs Steve, “that one is Lucas, so the Max one should be smaller.” Eddie rams in twigs for their arms, angling them so that ‘Lucas’ and ‘Max’ are holding hands.
Steve stands back, frowning, “so who is that one again?”
“Argyle, and that’s Hopper," Eddie replies, like it's obvious.
“Right, right. So we just have...Joyce left?”
“Yeah, we have to make Joyce the best one.”
Steve smiles to himself; he’s not entirely sure how good Eddie’s memory is when it comes to those first few days after he came out of the pool, freshly bald and newly legged, but Eddie definitely remembers the Christmas food. He also seems to remember how, in those first few months, Joyce was Steve’s go to for advice on Eddie care.
Not to mention how kind Joyce has always been; how she’s always gone out of her way to treat Eddie with the same kindness and inclusion as everyone else.
“You know what, you’re right, you build Joyce, I’ll be right back.”
Steve knocks the snow off his shoes at the back door, before heading upstairs to raid his parents wardrobes. He comes back with a small armful of stuff, and Eddie gleefully distributes clothing amongst his family of creations. Joyce ends up stylishly dressed in a cashmere shawl that Steve has no doubt is probably worth at least a months wages. He doesn’t give a shit though, and clearly neither do his parents; they haven’t been back at all this year.
Eddie stands back after, surveying his creations, “a little family,” he grins at Steve.
“Yeah,” Steve can’t help but agree, “now lets go in and warm up.”
“Yup,” Eddie grabs Steve’s face, smushing a chilly wet kiss to Steve’s nose on the way past.

Camp Wiegman-Part 54
Lucy Bronze x Ona Batlle
Tumblr media
Alternative Universe : Military School
Words: 5k
Masterlist
———————————————————————
Monday, February 15th; 09:00 AM - Hotel.
A new day begins in the Alps. While Lucy, Jenni, and Ingrid are at the reception arranging snowmobiles for us, the others are waiting outside. Watching them playfully battle with snowballs makes me smile. I loved the snowball fight we had at school... Although I do regret a little how it ended. It's a memory I won’t forget, especially considering how sick I got right after recovering. I’m glad the girls didn’t follow them outside to join in. Instead, we stayed warm inside, watching through the windows and waiting for our friends to give us instructions for the day.
"So, how was your Valentine’s Day?" Ale finally asks.
"Absolutely amazing!" Mapi exclaims enthusiastically. "I never really celebrate it, but I think I’m going to change my mind now," she admits. "Ingrid was incredible. She surprised me from start to finish."
"I can say the same," I add. "I didn’t even realize it was the 14th of February."
"Me neither," Alexia laughs. "Jenni really surprised me too."
"I heard you fell asleep during the movie last night?" Mapi teases, nudging me.
I blush and nod reluctantly. They must have noticed, or maybe Lucy mentioned it without me knowing. I was so comfortable and exhausted from the day that the movie knocked me out. Poor Lucy must have carried me to our room because apparently, I was too asleep to wake up.
"Yeah, but Lucy didn’t mind, so it’s all good. So, what did you do during the day?" I ask, trying to change the subject.
"We went Timbersledding in the morning. It was awesome!"
"Really? We did that too!" Mapi exclaims. "Except we did it in the afternoon."
"What is that?" I ask, suddenly feeling clueless.
"It’s like motocross on snow," Alexia explains. "It took me a while to remember the word too," she admits, as if it wasn’t a big deal if I didn’t know it.
"Motocross on snow?" I squint. "Isn’t that kind of like snowmobiling?"
"Yeah," she giggles. "But it’s way more powerful."
The revelation makes me feel even more foolish. They must think I’m really timid after how I reacted to Lucy’s few accelerations the other day.
"We had a half-hour lesson, enough time for me to get the hang of it, and then we went up into the mountains," she continues. "At one point, the instructor let us go on our own. Jenni knows I love thrills, so we try to do activities like that whenever we can."
"I have to admit it was really cool," Mapi says. "We had the same setup, and I don’t regret it."
"Is that all you did?"
"No. She took me to lunch afterward. Then in the afternoon, we did dog sledding and finished with a zip line. That was awesome too!"
"Ooooh! Really? No surprise there, that must have been amazing."
"Yeah," she smiles. "If there’s one thing you should do before leaving, it’s definitely that!"
"Wow, Jenni doesn’t mess around," Mapi says.
"Never. She also took me to a restaurant for both lunch and dinner. Then we finished with *Titanic*."
"And you, Mapi? What did you do in the morning?"
"We stayed here. We had breakfast in bed, and she had planned a spa session for us. After that, I also got to do dog sledding. Then we went to eat, and you know the rest. We’ve been talking about ourselves, but what about you? Did Lucy live up to the expectations?" she teases.
"Of course she did. We also started with breakfast in bed, then she arranged a carriage ride."
"Seriously? That’s so cool," Alexia says. "Maybe that could rival our sledding."
"Maybe, yeah," I giggle. "It was really nice. We cuddled up together the whole ride. Afterward, we went to eat in town, and then she took me to an exhibition."
"An exhibition?" Mapi asks, puzzled.
"Yeah. There was one in the nearby village. She saw a poster at the hotel and wanted to take me because she knows how much I love that."
"Oh... Sounds like she really nailed it," Mapi comments.
"Absolutely! We ended the day with a massage session and a private pool at the hotel. Then, like you, we ate at the hotel and watched a movie. She really chose all the activities I love; it was amazing."
I could have shared more about our morning when she told me she loved me, but I prefer to keep that detail to myself for now. Who knows how they would react? I don’t need them to get all excited right away. It’s something intimate that I plan to cherish on my own. We don’t have much more to talk about, as the three people we were waiting for walk towards us. Judging by their expressions, things didn’t go well.
"We couldn’t get the snowmobiles," Jenni grumbles.
"Weren’t they available for this morning?" Mapi asks.
The hotel had put up a board showing when they were available and how many there were. It seems we were too late for today. Yet, as Mapi just said, they should have been available this morning.
"They’re already reserved for early afternoon, and they’re worried we won’t return in time," Lucy explains.
"We’re stuck here. We’ll have to find another activity for the day," Ingrid sighs.
"Well, we could take a walk in the forest," Alexia suggests. "The girls are already having fun outside, so we might as well enjoy it, that way everyone’s happy."
We all look at each other for a moment, as if silently deliberating. I don’t mind this plan. Lucy and I love nature, so I’m sure she’d agree too. As for the other three girls, they don’t seem opposed to the idea either.
"She’s right. I’ll check with the reception to see if there are any trails nearby. » Jenni says
"Good idea, I’ll join you."
Lucy, who just responded, follows her, as does Ingrid. We’re back to three again. I sigh, starting to get a bit tired of waiting around. Seeing some empty chairs not far from us, I don’t hesitate long before heading over to them, quickly followed by my friends.
- Everything seems to be going well between you and Lucy, said Mapi.
- Yeah, everything's great. I'm glad we're on vacation, though. It's not the same at school.
- That's true. How do you plan to handle things there? Ale asked.
- Lucy wants to keep the two relationships separate.
- What do you mean by that...?
- She wants to continue being my supervisor.
- And do you think she'll manage? Mapi teased. I mean, even if you two aren’t sleeping together yet, you seem really close!
- What do you know about that anyway? I retorted, unable to stop blushing. In any case, that's something that concerns only us.
- Oh yes, for sure, but Mapi's right, Alexia chimed in. Jenni didn’t want to mix things either. Well, it was different since she wasn’t in charge of me at the time
 But it was still hard to keep our distance. In the end, she was the one who came to see me until we got caught.
- As you just said, it’s different. Lucy and I can see each other more often. Even if I won’t get any affection, I’ll still be with her, and that’s all that matters to me. Anyway, there are only a few months left, and I doubt Lucy will crack during that time. She doesn’t tend to give up when she wants something to work her way.
- That’s true... She’s always been the reasonable type, I think, Mapi sighed. Doesn’t that bother you? I mean, you’re usually someone who lets loose. I don’t get the impression that’s her style.
I frowned and shook my head. I know Lucy is reasonable, but it’s never been a problem. As I told Lucy herself, I love our differences.
- No, it doesn’t bother me. Thanks to that trait, she’s brought stability into my life.
- You’re right, Ale smiled. If there’s one thing Lucy can bring you, it’s definitely stability.
- The question is whether that’s what you want, Mapi muttered.
The tone of her voice didn’t sit well with me. Something was off. She wasn’t like this earlier in the morning. I didn’t have time to react as a hand rested on my shoulder. When I turned around, I saw my girlfriend’s smiling face. I decided not to dwell on Mapi's remark and smiled back at Lucy.
- Is everything settled? I asked.
- Yeah, the receptionist recommended a nice trail, and we can even stop to eat if we leave now, she announced. I came to get you. The others went outside to let the girls know.
- Cool.
I stood up, ready to take her hand, but Mapi didn’t give me the chance. She slipped her arm through mine instead.
- Come on, let’s go! she shouted.
I bit my lip as I looked back while she dragged me toward the exit. I found Lucy sighing. Even though she doesn’t say it anymore, I know she still struggles to tolerate Mapi’s behavior when she acts like this. Alexia, on the other hand, was trying not to laugh beside her. Unlike her, I didn’t find the situation funny. It’s not easy to find the right balance between the two. I turned back to Mapi, who flashed me a smile that I found hard to return. In situations like this, I struggle to understand her, but as a good friend, I held back my comments and let her lead me without a fuss. After all, she also has the right to some of my time.
Monday, February 15; 1:30 PM - Forest.
- Don’t you want to move a little faster?
I stifled a groan upon hearing Mapi's voice again.
- Go ahead, we’ll catch up, Alexia replied with a hint of amusement.
- Well
 okay. See you later!
I sighed, running my hand over my face to avoid watching her skip ahead. She had managed to exhaust me. I’ve never known a walk to feel this long. I guess I’m familiar with the phenomenon that’s currently prancing in front of us until she finds her girlfriend. I love walking, but with the many kilometers we’ve covered and Mapi’s endless chatter, my feet are on fire, and my head is about to explode. I was grateful to the others for making stops from time to time. The worst part was that she kept rehashing our past, which she recounted to Alexia. Alexia kindly stayed with us, seeing my despair. She brought up so many memories. I didn’t even remember doing half of it. Our evenings were what she talked about the most. She kept circling back to that, glancing at me as if expecting a reaction. I didn’t give her one. All I could think about was how thankful I was to Lucy for getting me out of that cycle. It will always be a part of me, but I’ve learned to have fun in other ways now. Drinking and smoking can be fun for a while, but it’s no longer something I want to do every weekend. Mapi finally tired of her act when I started lagging behind the others. She’s now gone, without even noticing my weariness. Alexia burst into laughter shortly after she left, quickly joined by my girlfriend, who had waited for us to stay with us. I must have made quite a face because they couldn’t stop laughing. Still, I couldn’t help but smile as I realized that Alexia and Lucy were sharing a laugh. It’s not something you see every day.
- Alright, are you done? I’d like to see you in my shoes!
- Sorry, but your face was priceless, Alexia defended herself between laughs.
- It’s really not funny.
- What did she do to make you look like that? Lucy asked.
- Talk, talk, and talk some more... but like, all the time! And the worst part was she only talked about what we used to do! Can you believe that?
- If you must know, I learned that Ona was the champion at forgetting last night’s mess after a party, Alexia summarized with amusement.
My elbow reflexively jabbed into Alexia’s side. I took the opportunity to give her a stern look. I didn’t need Lucy knowing that kind of thing. I’m not proud of it. The worst part is that I never ended a night the same way. Rarely did I wake up in a bed, with or without Mapi. I was a party animal, and I’ll probably never shake that label.
- You don’t need to hit her, Lucy scolded me. It’s not like I didn’t suspect it. I saw the kind of parties you hung out at.
I blushed, regretting not thinking about that before taking her to Miller’s house. Maybe that’s why she so easily agreed to go. She wanted to see where I spent all my nights before I met her. She was right. It was in that house that I spent most of my nights. Miller was lucky enough to have parents who often had to travel for work. They let him do as he pleased as long as the house was clean when they returned, and he always managed to do that. I’ve lost count of how many times we had to help him clean up. We made quite a mess. As Mapi mentioned earlier, there was even a time when we painted all the walls of the house. I think that was the first time Miller got scolded. We couldn’t afford to run from what had been done since it was a weekend. However, we were good at repainting all the walls after our classes. It would have taken them several days if we hadn’t helped.
- Well, I was a teenager after all, I shrugged.
- That’s no excuse. I didn’t go out that much when I was a teenager.
- What were you like? Alexia asked curiously, unknowingly saving me from a certain argument.
- Much more reasonable, Lucy smiled. If we went out, it was like now. We went to a bar, the movies, or something like that. Parties didn’t interest me. Jenni went sometimes, but I never joined her.
Seeing them chat so easily made me smile. In just a few days, this trip has already done a lot of good. The fear Alexia had when we left seems to have disappeared. I had kept telling her she was worrying for nothing. Lucy's behavior must have reassured her a lot. She’s much more relaxed here, and as I told her, Alexia noticed that Lucy has nothing to do with the “Commander” from Camp Wiegman. The fact that Lucy knows Ale was there for me a lot when we weren’t on good terms must help. She understood that I really care about her, and that must have calmed her down about her. At least, I imagine that for Lucy, Ale made up for sending away her best friend by being there for me because she’s stopped resenting her since. It’s a good thing we became roommates. Without our friendship, none of this would have been possible.
- Were you popular? I joked as I joined the conversation.
- No, she immediately replied. I started to become known when I got into sports in high school, but since I never went to parties, no one paid attention to me. I was way too focused on studying to get my diploma.
- I’m sure it wasn’t necessary. You’re very smart, I replied.
Maybe, she shrugged with a small smile. But I still graduated top of my class in high school, and despite my injury, I found a good college for my higher education. Without my good grades in all subjects, who knows how I would’ve ended up without sports.
Lucy deserves a lot of credit. Who knows how things would have turned out if she had only focused on training
 She can anticipate things if they go wrong. That's definitely not my case. I tend to rush in headfirst.
"Wow," Alexia says. "I didn’t know you got injured. Maybe I should focus more on my studies," she laughs.
"Oh, don’t worry. Injuries happen, but they don't affect many people, really. I guess I’m just one of the unlucky ones."
"Don’t say that," I reply.
"You handled it very well, so that’s cool," Ale says. "What did you end up studying, if you don’t mind me asking?"
"Well, my injury changed a lot of things. Jenni was just as upset as I was. That’s when we came up with the idea to open a gym together. My only option was to enroll in a management school specialized in sports, but few schools offered that. When I had to move to Manchester, Jenni didn’t hesitate for a second to follow me."
"But she continued with sports, right?" Alexia asks, frowning.
"Yes, she did. We went to the same school but with different majors. She still took some of my courses as electives to help support our project."
"I didn’t know that. I mean, I knew what she wanted to do, but she never explained the backstory. How did you two meet, anyway?" Alexia continues, clearly intrigued.
"We’ve known each other forever," she shrugs. "She was my neighbor, and she would stand up for me when the neighborhood kids picked on me. I was an easy target as a little girl, and she hated that," she laughs. "She’s always been very diplomatic in conflicts. Since then, we’ve never been apart."
"I was so jealous of you at first," Alexia admits. "Jenni talked about you like you were the most precious thing in her life," she explains, making Lucy smile. "She insisted on making sure you knew about us. I was terrified of that, given your reputation, and even more so when she admitted you didn’t take it well. I thought you would break us up in a heartbeat."
Lucy sighs, running her hand through her hair, almost embarrassed by Alexia's confession. I’m just an observer in this scene, but I listen intently. I’ve wanted to know the whole story for a long time, and if it could end here, that would be perfect.
"I did struggle with it, yes. Working at Camp Wiegman was important to me, both for personal and financial reasons."
I smile, fully understanding the personal reasons. Knowing that I’m one of the few who knows that part of her life warms my heart. I feel privileged.
"I was afraid Jenni would ruin everything for us, but at the same time, I wanted nothing more than her happiness. I understood that you meant a lot to her, so I held back, just as she asked me to. Still, what I feared came true. You got caught, and she got fired. I couldn’t hide my anger towards you after that."
"I’m sure it wasn’t as strong a feeling as you make it sound," I murmur.
"No, but I had a hard time accepting Jenni’s departure. I thought everything was over. Even so, she never gave up. She was unemployed for two months during the summer before finally finding work at a gym. It was because of that period that our funding got blocked," she explains. "They thought we were unstable professionally, but we proved that wasn’t the case, and here we are, finally launched."
"My intention was never for her to get fired," Alexia says, regret in her voice.
"I know. I just expected your relationship to fall apart after she left, and that she would have ruined everything for nothing. I was wrong, and I regret that. It was a good thing that Ona was in your room. I got to see a different side of you thanks to her. I hope you don’t hold too much of a grudge against me. It was never my intention to hate my best friend’s girlfriend."
"It’s fine. You had your reasons, and I completely understand. I just hope everything’s better now."
"Of course," Lucy smiles. "I won’t question your relationship anymore. As long as you take good care of her, you’ll have my full support."
"Then we shouldn’t have any problems," Alexia giggles.
"If we do, I’m sure Ona will make sure to put me back in my place," Lucy jokes, wrapping her arm around my shoulders.
I blush as Alexia laughs. The image must be hilarious, even if it’s probably what would happen. I’m glad everything is resolved now, and since they get along, I’ll make sure to maintain their relationship. I love Alexia, and since she’s the girlfriend of Lucy’s best friend, it’s best to keep things peaceful between all of us.
"I doubt that will be necessary. You’re the one who makes most of the decisions, right?" Alexia asks Lucy.
"Hmm... No. I mean, we make decisions together. And don’t be fooled—Ona has quite the temper when she wants to. Right?"
She playfully nudges me with her hip. I wish I could shrink into the ground right now. The worst part is, I can’t deny it. I do have a strong personality when I’m comfortable with someone. I hadn’t realized I’d reached that point with Lucy.
"Yeah, yeah," I mutter.
"Oh, guys, the cabin’s finally here!" Mapi yells from up front.
A sigh of relief escapes my lips.
"Finally, for fuck sake!"
"Hey, language," Lucy scolds me.
"It’s not you who had to endure almost three hours of conversation with Mapi at your side."
"She’s your friend, so it’s your responsibility to deal with her," she teases. "Personally, I have no issues with mine."
I stick my tongue out in response, which makes her smile. If only I could understand what’s going on in Mapi’s head. It’s clear she’s not acting like herself. She’s almost clingy, and that’s not like her. It’s as if something is bothering her. I plan to get the words out of her mouth if it comes to that. If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my relationship with Lucy, it’s that communication is golden and prevents a lot of problems. Just a few more steps, and we’ll finally reach the lodge Mapi mentioned. This is where we’ll have lunch. Finally. I’m starving, and my feet are burning with pain. Plus, I can’t wait to take off this thick jacket. It’s like a snowsuit. Heavy layers are definitely not my thing.
"Come on, just a few more steps, and we’re there," Lucy reassures me, as if she knows what I’m thinking.
"Will we keep going after lunch? Or turn back?"
"No idea," she shrugs. "Either way, we’ll probably have the same distance to cover."
I groan in complaint, making Lucy laugh. I love walking, but not so much in the snow. At least the weather is on our side. If there was ice instead of snow, I’d be the first to end up on my butt.
"I hope we take the shorter route!"
"Are you done complaining?" Alexia teases. "We’re here to enjoy ourselves, Miss Grumpy!"
"She took the words right out of my mouth."
"Hey, just because you two have buried the hatchet doesn’t mean you get to gang up on me! I’ll complain if I want to, okay?"
My rhetorical question only makes them laugh more. I cross my arms, earning a kiss on the cheek from my girlfriend.
"We’re just kidding, relax. We’ve arrived, so go warm up, my little grumbler."
"You’ll see what your little grumbler will do if you keep this up," I mutter.
"Keep it up, and I’ll leave you to spend the rest of the day with Mapi."
"No!" I respond immediately. "You wouldn’t dare?"
"Want to bet?"
She holds the door open for me, challenging me with a smirk. I sigh as I unzip my jacket when I step inside. I know when to keep quiet, and this is one of those moments. We’re joking around, but I know she’d be capable of it, and given the situation with Mapi, it’s definitely not the time.
"I’ll be good, thanks."
Unfortunately, we were the last ones to enter, so naturally, the only seats left were across from Mapi and Ingrid. It seems everyone has settled into their usual spots because, since the beginning, no one has changed their seating arrangement. I end up across from my best friend and between the two girls who accompanied me.
"Have you been here before?" I ask Lucy.
- "No, I haven't had the chance to do this trail. Jen and I did the other one, but it was much longer, so we decided not to do it today."
- "Oh, well, that's a relief, huh?"
- "Are you still complaining?" Alexia teased.
- "She's not likely to stop anytime soon," Lucy continued. "It's in her nature to grumble, but we love her anyway."
- "Hey, have you both finished ganging up on me?"
- "Ooooh, we're just teasing you," Alexia laughed.
I barely had time to pout before Lucy pulled me close. I smiled as I snuggled into her arms. Across from us, the girls were chatting with the guys, understanding that we were in our own little world. However, I noticed Mapi sneaking glances at us. When our eyes met, she gave me a smile, almost forced—more like embarrassed at being caught in the act. Knowing her, she's holding back from saying something.
- "You're not going to sulk, are you?" Lucy whispered to me.
- "No, not if you keep making it up to me like this."
She chuckled softly, kissing the top of my head. I especially appreciated her affection. She’s much more affectionate than I expected. I'm not naturally the cuddly type, even before Feli, but I find myself enjoying every touch from her. It’s reassuring in a way. It’s so different from what I’ve known, and it feels like she wants to show off our relationship to the world. Yet, I know all of this will vanish the moment we step back into school. Just thinking about returning to our daily routine makes me want to cry.
- "Sweetheart," Lucy called, snapping me out of my thoughts.
- "Huh? Oh, sorry," I apologized to the waitress who was holding out the menu, which I hadn't noticed.
- "No worries," she smiled. "I'm here if you need anything," she said as she finished handing out the menus, making it clear that she'd been waiting for a while. "Should I come back for the drinks, or do you already know what you want?"
- "You can come back," Aitana answered. "We'll take a look at the menu first."
- "Alright."
She smiled at her before walking away. I hadn't noticed how interested Aitana was in her until I saw her checking her out. I stifled a laugh when she said:
- "Do you think she really means it when she says she's here to meet all our needs?"
- "Looks like someone here is a little desperate," Jenni teased.
- "Yeah, well, shut up, you guys," Aitana shot back, pointing at us. "You're all in relationships, so you wouldn't understand. She's pretty hot, isn't she? Maybe I should ask for her number."
Everyone laughed, though mine was a bit awkward since Lucy and I haven't done anything yet. I shouldn't be worried since we've only been together for less than a month, but knowing that Mapi and Ingrid have already slept together makes me a bit uneasy. It's frustrating because I'm not sure I'm ready to take that step. It’s daunting, like I’d be losing my virginity all over again. Almost as if she could read my thoughts, Lucy kissed my temple.
- "What do you want to drink?"
I blinked, trying to focus on her. The others were debating whether Aitana would get the waitress's number or not. If I were to join in, I'd probably say she has a good chance given the way she looked at her, but my mind was elsewhere.
- "Everything's fine, remember?" she continued when I stayed silent.
I cleared my throat and nodded. I felt silly. Of course, she knew what I was thinking, and she's reassured me about it many times.
- "I know. Sorry. I just feel a bit foolish."
- "There's no need to. So, what about that drink?"
- "What do you recommend?"
She smiled, making me smile too. She knows good wine better than I do. Over time, I’ve realized that she doesn’t mind alcohol; she just knows how to enjoy it in moderation. It’s something I’d never done before. She suggested a few different wines, but I ended up ordering the same one as her when the waitress came back to take our orders. As for the main course, we all went for raclette. Since we were here, we might as well enjoy the cheese. The meal was lively, especially with the girls who kept calling the waitress back for trivial things, like a jug of water. By the end of our meal, Aitana did end up getting her number, as I expected. On top of that, she invited us all to a private party in town tonight. Everyone was thrilled. It was just what we needed since we arrived. After that, our hike resumed. Unlike the walk up, I decided to stay towards the front, allowing me to spend time with all the girls on this trip, not just Mapi and Alexia like before. Mapi didn’t seem too happy about it, judging by the way she looked at me. I realize there's a real problem, and I’ll have to address it soon if we want to have a good time together.

I know cowboy skitties are the moment right now but my disillusionment with the fascination with the west is real. and i think we should give the endlings giant paleo sled dogs. to get around the ash wastes. I think we should be more enthusiastic about mushing in general.

Rating dog-selkies based on how good they are at being sled dogs
Gore 10/10
Very enthusiast at the idea of being outside and running. Good leader when he's in a pack but also very good at being alone for smaller sleds. Will overwork himself and need a 3-hours nap right after getting home
Little 3/10
Edward is a good lieutenant. He knows his responsability, he can handle difficult situations and he's a pretty good leader. But is he a good sled dog ? Absolutely not. He's too self-conscious when he's acting like a dog, and he's not that strong. Will pull for a bit before turning around to face you with big wet eyes and ask to go home
Tozer 6/10
Strong and enjoy exercice, but a bit lazy. Pulling sleds is not part of his job description so he won't do it unless absolutely necessary. Can get into it if he's doing it with friends
Hartnell 7/10
He's pretty enthusiast to help, but has never learnt how to do it. Would be pretty good with proper training. Currently learning with Blanky how to navigate on the ice so he can eventually learn how to lead
Peglar 4/10
Will get distracted by anything + not really meant to be a sled dog. He is a lap dog first and foremost (please disregard the fact he's clearly too big to be one)
Pilkington 6/10
Can get the job done but as with Solomon, that's not in his job description and it shows. Also a bit too small for the dog harness they have so they need to make him a custom one
Manson 8/10
Surprisingly good at it ? Had little training for it but also picks it up quite fast on the field. Not fast but very strong and hardy so he's a valuable asset to the team !
Young 5/10 He wants to help !! Alas his dog form is not very different from a cooked spaghetti (long and not very sturdy). Will be asked to join the team if they need someone but otherwise, he is mostly here for backup. Will keep an eye on the other dogs of the group and be the first to alert if there is a problem, so here's that at least

At the Mountains of Madness Howard Phillips Lovecraft
The creative legacy of the master of horror literature includes mainly short stories and novels. Sometimes publishers try to group them into cycles, but, in fact, it is completely irrelevant and unnecessary: Lovecraft created his own universe on the pages of stories, whose characters, places of action, books, as a source of various information, intersect with each other, casually mentioned in one novel, then in another, causing a pleasant recognition of the reader and constructing the author's world, animated in this way and looking more believable and deeper. Lovecraft's influence not only on the horror genre, but on literature in general, on culture cannot be overestimated. He became the creator, the founder of a special direction - "Lovecraftian horror", formed at the beginning of the last century and still inspiring more and more new writers to turn to Lovecraft's work in search of ideas, expanding, multiplying and enriching the universe of myths about the ancient gods and old races.
A group of enthusiastic scientists are travelling to Antarctica. Their goal is to collect a variety of geological samples to study the past of the mysterious icy continent. This becomes possible thanks to a unique invention of one of the participants: a special drilling rig capable of penetrating to a depth previously inaccessible, as well as allowing them to cope with the ice cover. As a result of the research, scientists find a strange imprint on one of the rock samples. A representative of Lake's biology department insists on changing the expedition's plans in order to continue the search in the direction where the mysterious imprint was found. Part of the group remains at the prepared base, while the other part sets off into the unknown. After a while they begin to receive incredible, exciting, intriguing and capturing the imagination of scientists information: it turns out that unexplored areas of Antarctica still hide many secrets, one of which has now been revealed - it is an unprecedented height mountain range, shivering in the pinkish haze, illuminated by the low Antarctic sun. And biologists have also stumbled across the cavity during blasting and drilling operations, resulting in the strange, even a little frightening, discovery of incomprehensible figures of either animal or plant origin. Lake decides to carry them back to camp and study them, despite the fact that the sled dogs can't seem to stand the specimens and literally go crazy. The scientists left at the base are eager to continue, but suddenly the camp stops responding to calls ....
Whatever Howard Lovecraft wrote about, be it a detailed tale about an expedition to Antarctica or the simplest story about a cynical and greedy cemetery keeper, one thing you can't take away from him is his ability to create an incredible, lively, disturbing atmosphere of sticky horror on the pages, which runs coldly down your spine and sucks you into its reality, because that's what the author is able to achieve, to convince the reader of the absolute and immutable reality of what is happening. It seems that Lovecraft somewhere overheard, somewhere peeped, somewhere learnt about frightening myths, about which he now tells us only in hints, fearing to reveal too much to the untrained mind; about forbidden cults and rituals, originating in grey antiquity, but survived and reached our days thanks to a small number of those who are devoted to the dark secrets; about some places on our planet, which hold material evidence of bygone eras, of which not even the memory has survived, where the old gods have found rest, endlessly slumbering on half-destroyed pedestals, dreaming of magnificent and unimaginable onyx cities, wandering through caves, penetrating the giant mountains, and dreaming of awakening one day. Lovecraft's stories are every time an encounter with the unknown, the unknowable, the unspeakable and the unnameable. And yet, I have never met an author who would be so precise, detailed, even meticulous in describing the pictures created by his imagination, something non-existent,something that only he alone can see. So no matter how inexpressible and indescribable would not be horror on the pages of the book, believe me, Lovecraft imagines it very well and is quite capable of outlining the strange images seen by his inner vision, in the most refined, slightly archaic (for the effect) in the most sophisticated, slightly archaic (for empty effect) terms, and the reader is simply speechless from all these fine details, photographic details and dark colours that colour the strange stories that go beyond the boundaries of the usual, but create a different reality.

All the car enthusiasts I know love the idea of a long, luxurious, American boat of a car. It doesn't matter what their main interest is: racing, motorcycles, dog farming, or lifted trucks. Everyone likes the idea of getting some old lead sled made in the U.S. of A, and accelerating smoothly and comfortably onto the highway, where their fellow motorists are too afraid to pass for fear they may be a gangster or just elderly.
How do American manufacturers respond to this universal desire for their product? By not making these cars anymore. That's right, you can't buy a boat. If you want a luxury sedan, you're going to be buying a sports sedan in the image of the Germans, only not as good. If you want heavy, boaty luxury from an American automaker, you will instead get some long-wheelbase school bus of a body-on-frame SUV, which costs as much as a house.
As intimidating as those vehicles can be, they more or less look identical to every other SUV on the road. It takes a Ph. D in large-displacement vehicles to identify them, and by the time you're done pointing out the essential differences which make a Cadillac Escalade visually distinct from a Chevy Suburban, your date has walked out, and you're stuck picking up the cheque for two at Applebee's. This is not the case with the land barges of old: you can absolutely tell the difference between a 1988 Town Car and a 1988 Ford Escort.
There is hope, however. I've devised an elaborate body kit that will transform a cheap sedan into a luxury cruiser. It makes a Hyundai Elantra twice as wide and nearly three times as long, and it's made entirely out of environmentally-friendly plywood and less-environmentally-friendly spraypaint from the tractor supply store. It also makes the vehicle authentically slow, which you'll find adds to the pleasure of pretending you're the talentless scion of a small town used car dealership. Hey, maybe they sell high-mileage Grand Marquises there.

Can you do my girl Everest for the ask game?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You guys sure love her as much as me lol
@oceanicwolf47 @reading-sometimes
My first impression - OMG A HUSKY SHE'S A HUSKY I LOVE HUSKIES
My impression now - THE LOVELIEST HUSKY EVER I LOVE HER SO MUCH
Favorite thing about that character - Look, I know all (or most) pups are always ready to help, BUT HER EAGERNESS for it is just absolutely contagious
Least favorite thing - I don't have a least favorite thing, unless we can count the fact she should show up for more episodes or the fact most of her toys are ugly or lazily made/painted as hell and she doesn't deserve any of that crap. She's amazing. Next question.
Favorite line/scene - Spent several days and didn't come up with anything for this.
Favorite interaction that character has with another - Ouch this one is hard. But I like her interactions with Marshall and Rubble the most.
A character that I wish that character would interact with more - Ryder! She should get more time with him, to bond with him as well, after all he's the one giving her orders and directions during rescues...
Another character from another fandom that reminds me of that character - Balto. This one was hard, I didn't want to pick him just because "Oh, both are sled dogs", but after several days trying to think of other characters... In the end, it's Balto anyway. Both are very gentle and enthusiastic, both are always eager to help, no matter the weather they'll be there. I have the feeling if she would ever be able to meet him, she would be thrilled and very inspired by him and his stories.
Tumblr media
A headcanon about that character - I got this headcanon that she had a previous owner but got lost during a very bad snowstorm on their vacation trip to the South Pole. When the rescue team arrived, she was still lost and the family had to leave without her. They couldn't afford another trip there after that and she had to fend for herself until she met Jake and later the Paw Patrol, getting adopted by Jake and going to live with him.
A song that reminds of that character - "Snow Town"
An unpopular opinion about that character - Got nothing here.
Favorite picture - Something I really like about Everest is how fearless she is towards animals others would usually fear, and how gentle and caring she is, making them feel safe around her. This is one of the pics I like the most, because it shows just that.

Nadezhda
This is for the @hws-anthology Secret Santa exchange! I present to you, my gift for @arachnoidmater! Their request was "anything with Russia" so I hope this is alright ^^'
Pairing: Canada/Russia (not explicit)
Rating: Gen
Word Count: 3512
Featuring: human and dog OCs, dog sledding, Kuma is a full size polar bear again, and questionable winter camping advice
Summary: Russia takes a vacation to the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, where he meets an old friend and makes a new one.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was a special occasion whenever he came out this far. The travel had become much easier with the invention of planes, but there still wasn’t much out here. Not for him. Not for work. Not anymore.
Besides, it was nice to have something that remained mostly the same.
He made the journey slowly, using a train when he could, and when the train tracks ran out he rented a snowmobile. There weren’t always roads here either —the Chukotka Highway was still unfinished, and wouldn’t extend Lorino even if it was — but in the middle of winter that was not such a problem. There was plenty of snow.
Perhaps one day that would also change.
Thoughts for another time.
He rode all night long. A human would never be able to make this journey the way he did, especially not while carrying winter camping supplies the way he was. Regular camping supplies felt heavy enough until one experienced the weight of winter camping gear. He didn’t want to dig into those just yet, though. He needed to save food for the next part of his trip.
Plus, he liked arriving in the morning. That was half the fun of traveling east. Watching the gradual lightening of his surroundings, feeling the gradual warmth as the sun finally slipped up into the sky. The weather was pleasant despite the season, and it made him smile under the scarf covering the lower half of his face.
He rides all the way into town. People hardly glance at him as he goes by. Without proper roads, snowmobiles in the winter and ATVs in the summer were common forms of transport. He too utilized them when necessary, but he also found them cold. Inhospitable. He craved something else.
He passes many dogs on the ride, some of whom follow him to his destination. They run beside him, tongues lolling out of their mouths as he approaches the wooden building, their home. The bright blue exterior paint has been stripped away in some spots, but the painted sign is legible even from a distance: чуĐșĐŸÌŃ‚ŃĐșая Đ”Đ·ĐŽĐŸĐČĐ°ÌŃ - Chukotka Sled Dogs.
He pulls up to the porch outside. One brave dog approaches him, almost all black besides his stomach and a thin rail of white fur up his nose. He recognizes this as one of the eponymous Chukotka breed sled dogs. The dog puts its front paws in his lap, even with the engine of the snowmobile still rumbling, and licks at his face. This makes Ivan laugh. The dog responds by licking him more enthusiastically. He can hardly see through his goggles now, but that’s alright.
A sharp voice calls, â€œŃ‚Đ”ĐœŃŒ!” - Shadow, and the dog immediately climbs off his lap. A woman with a wrinkled face and long gray hair stands in the doorway. The dog obediently lays down at her feet.
Ivan grins at her. “I assume this is one of the leaders,” he says cheerfully. He stands from the snowmobile, wobbling a little as he readjusts the weight of his pack.
Pulling a rag out of one of her many pockets, the woman gestures for his goggles. The shine of the sun makes Ivan blink a couple times. A few other dogs gather around them. Even more approach the woman, hoping for treats. Ivan assumes this woman runs the tour company.
His goggles are significantly cleaner when she hands them back to him.
“I am Zinaida,” she says.
“Thank you, I am Ivan,” he says, appreciatively. He keeps it simple for now. The woman is not wearing a coat, and he can see she is already starting to shiver. Her skin has thinned with age.
Zinaida nods, and turns back towards the warmth of the building, making it clear she is uninterested in small talk outside. Ivan follows her. The entrance appears to be a singular office, with a small, lit fireplace to one side. Leather hides cover the walls to block the draft. It is sort of like an inside out yaranga. Seeing it makes Ivan both smile and feel deeply sad.
“Are you here for a tour?” Zinaida sits down heavily in a chair by the fire. The wood creams in tune with the crackling of the fire. She picks up a sewing project she must have been working on before Ivan got there. It’s hard to tell what she’s making, but it looks large and warm. She multitasks through the whole conversation.
Ivan drops his sack of camping gear on the floor and sits down in the other chair, quickly removing all his outer layers. Hopefully this will not take long, but it would be worse to overheat. Shadow places himself between them.
“No,” Ivan says, ”I only need a sled team.”
The woman regards him: his fur and leather gear, his content smile despite the season, his stature. She must judge him to be a competent sled driver, because her next question is “How long?”
Ivan watches her practiced fingers pushing and pulling thread through treated leather. Rather than a number of hours, he answers, “Three or four days.”
She frowns minutely. Ivan does not take it personally. A stranger has entered her town and just asked to take six of the dogs she and her family rely on for multiple days into unpredictable conditions without the usual supervision they get. This would give anyone pause.
Ivan knows Zinaida is not the type for spur of the moment adventures like this, but she must sense something abnormal about him. Something in his eyes or the way the light of the fire flickers across his face is something beyond human. After another few minutes of studying him silently, she says yes, to Ivan’s surprise. “Only my slowest dogs,” she specifies, “And I want all of your information before you go.” Her face makes it clear that Ivan will be found personally responsible for anything that might happen to the dogs, or if any of them are not returned. He readily agrees.
An hour later he has a lightweight wooden sled, the kind with a basket for multi day trips. He is grateful to store his heavy camping equipment there instead. Zinaida calls all the dogs in —- Ivan counts 26 at least —and singles out the slowest of them, so if Ivan proves to be a runaway dog thief, they would be able to catch him.
He is introduced to five new dogs: another Chukotka sled dog, one Siberian husky, and three Yakutian Laikas. A few have gray appearing along their muzzle. Ivan wonders if it was a natural coloration, or signs of age. It would explain Zinaida’s assessment that these would be the worst getaway dogs.
Regardless, they are all impeccably trained. “My husband and my son used to handle the dog training,” Zinaida explains as she tests his knowledge of harnessing the dogs. “Now, my son is teaching my grandchildren how to do it.”
Ivan does not meet any of these people before he leaves, but the loving warmth in Zinaida’s voice as she speaks of them prompts him to ask more. “So this is a family business?”
It is the wrong conversational path to take. Zinaida gives a noncommittal shake of her head, something between a physical yes or no. “It is how we live,” and she says no more about it.
“How old are your grandchildren?” Ivan goes for a less loaded subject.
Zinaida’s warm smile returns to her face. “I have five grandchildren,” she states proudly, “one is 14, old enough now that we are teaching him to see the trails so he can lead tours one day. Another is 12. When the 14 year old has learned, we will have him teach the 12 year old on the trails. The others are all under 8. We have them work with only the puppies for now.”
As she talks about her family, Ivan hooks the five dogs onto the gang line. A few other dogs paw at the harnesses, evidently disappointed at not being chosen for this ride. It is then that Ivan notices that there is no lead dog for this team yet.
“Sorry,” Ivan begins, interrupting Zinaida’s story about how one of her brothers once got into a fistfight with a whale, “who will be the lead dog?”
Zinaida glances towards Shadow. The dog waits eagerly by the end of the gang line, tail wagging. Ivan is sure that he is not the slowest of their lead dogs, but Zinaida says, “Shadow seems fond of you,” and so he begins strapping the dog in, more slowly than the others in case Zinaida decides she wants him to take a different dog.
She does not stop him. She merely scratches Shadow’s ear, and says a prayer for their safe travels.
  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Nobody bats an eye at Ivan as they leave town, as unsurprised by dog sleds as they are snowmobiles.
The land around Lorino is an open, hilly tundra caught between the The team, used to hunting trips on the ice flows, begin curving towards the beach out of habit. They follow the tracks from other sleds that Ivan can still see, but he wants to remain inland. Ivan gives the command “Le!”, before he remembers the right word. “Ho!” he calls, and the dogs quickly turn. Ivan sees a thicket of trees in the distance, and he aims for those.
The weather remains beautiful in this open expanse of white, and the trees are still quite far. So far they’ve stayed at a relaxed jogging pace, but Ivan gives the command to speed up.
The dogs are zooming across the ice now. Ivan clings to the handle bar of the sled through his mittens and laughs, pure unburdened joy.
They pass many whale bone markers standing up through the landscape. Jaw bones and ribs curl up into the air, reminders of the area’s maritime culture. Further down the path they had been following Ivan spots two other dog teams, this time with hunting sleds, canoes strapped to the backs. He waves to them, still laughing loudly.
It takes an hour to reach the tree line. Here they pause for a light lunch. When Ivan unhooks the dogs two of them immediately begin play-fighting.
“You still have so much energy!” he laughs. When they notice him digging out six collapsible dog bowls, they quickly put aside their differences.
“You burn a lot of energy in this environment, so eat up!” He gives them each one scoop of the high protein dog food Zinaida had given him. It looks like fish mush. It smells like fish mush. It’s probably some kind of fish mush.
The dog’s lick their bowls clean. Ivan is glad for the bread and cheese he packed for himself.
  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was many hours before they stopped to camp for the night. He didn’t have a real destination in mind, so it was a good thing he couldn’t get lost. He could just ride and ride and ride, enjoy the wilderness, enjoy the company. Whatever guides him is something intangible, an internal sense of the path, a path. One that has not been used in a long time. It does not take long to reach a distance where they no longer see any other people.
When Ivan finally decides he’s found a flat enough area among the trees, they stop. This time, the dogs lounge around, having gotten most of their energy out on the way there. Their attempts to play are half-hearted, only the Husky is still in the mood. The others whine with irritation when she tries to engage them. One of the other dogs leans against his legs. They remain as vocal as before. Only the lead dog, Shadow, is still in work mode. He circles around the camp, sniffing everything, assessing, before flopping down right where Ivan had planned to put the tent.
He walks over to try and convince the dog to move somehow. It doesn’t work. Shadow stares up at him with big brown sad eyes, you wouldn’t make me get up and move would you? The plan is abandoned before he even gets a word out.
So the tent might be tilting slightly. Could be worse.
Shadow gets comfy, even curled up in the snow. Ivan stays bundled up as he searches for mostly level ground for the tent. It is most important that the thermal sleeping pads will not shift inside the tent. It will be their first defense from the frozen ground. Their next defense will be heavy duty sleeping bags, then their layers of clothes. The ancillary heat source, their fire pit, he arranges after the tent is situated.
The sun is beginning to set when he hears the echoing barks of a different team of dogs. The dogs around him perk up, curiously. He feels that itchy feeling they all get when another nation is coming closer.
Through the trees, another sled and dog team appears. Someone equally bundled up in furs clings to the back.
The mystery person’s identity is proven when Ivan looks further back and sees the great white bear following behind the sled at an easy pace.
“Hello!” Matthew greets him as the sled pulls up to Ivan’s camp. Pieces of his curly hair stick out from under the edges of his hat, bouncing as Matthew hops off and starts unhooking his own dogs. Matthew has also brought a six dog team, but he recognizes them as an Alaskan Husky, two Samoyeds, two Qimmiq dogs, and a Siberian Husky. Not breeds he’d be likely to find in Russia.
“How did you get all those dogs across the border?” He asks.
Matthew’s answer is cagey. “On a boat,” he says.
“Ahh,” Ivan laughs a little, “‘Illegally’ is what I am hearing.”
“Then you didn’t hear anything,” Matthew snaps back playfully.
“Perhaps I did not,” Ivan agrees, offering Kuma a nose rub as the bear nudges the side of his head. It’s a miracle that the dogs do not freak out at his presence in the camp considering their use in polar bear hunts, but he also knows Kuma manages to be invisible to humans too sometimes. It must be related to that. “What would you do if I did ask to see their papers?”
“I would show them to you,” Matthew answers honestly, “but it’s a hassle to do all that with border guards even for one dog, much less six all at once.” Ivan nods in agreement as Matthew continues, “So it’s just easier to bring them over through port. It’s not that they weren’t declared, I just had each one paired with a different crew member, they did the work for me.”
“Ohh, that’s a clever strategy!” Ivan is not at all bothered by Matthew’s flagrant disregard for the Federation’s pet import restrictions. If the roles were reversed, he would’ve done the same.
It is lucky Matthew picked up firewood on his way. Ivan had expected they’d go the first night without a fire as the wood they would collect around them would need to dry out before it was usable. Instead, they get a fire going then, and the difference in the warmth of the tent is tangible. They leave the fire burning low overnight. It’s not recommended, but Matthew assures him Kuma would wake them up if anything went wrong.
Matthew goes to sleep quickly, slightly behind from the shift in time zones. Ivan sleeps peacefully, lulled by Matthew’s light snores beside him.
  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The next two days they spend the daylight hours sledding. They gradually pack down the safe paths. When something appears dangerous they warn each other. Kuma keeps guard. If there were any wild animals who might have bothered them, the bear’s presence keeps them away, although the howling of the wolves at night still spooks the dogs.
When it is dark, they return to the camp they’ve established. They move the warm stones from the fire pit close to the tent each morning to maintain a heat source during the day. There is only one close call with their heat source. Ivan cut a small ventilation hole at the top of the tent so they can keep a candle inside. On the evening of the second day, Matthew accidentally knocks it over. He quickly grabs it, saving their tent from catching fire, but the hot wax and glass burn his hands badly. It will heal by the morning, but for that night Matthew pouts all through dinner.
“This is embarrassing,” he mutters. His face feels like it's burning as much as his hands.
Ivan scoops up another spoonful of their rehydrated rice and beans, “
Matthew opens his mouth to accept Ivan feeding him, but Ivan suddenly jerks the spoon back. He blows gently on it before presenting it to Matthew again. “Sorry, it looked too hot, and I would not want you to burn yourself,” he teases.
Matthew glares at him for a moment, before taking the food. “You’re gonna feed me s’mores by hand too for that,” he declares, “We still have a tent to sleep in because of me.”
Ivan’s smile widens, “Of course. You have earned it.”
They entertain themselves with various means. Ivan packed a couple small books. Matthew brought a pack of cards. During dinner they watch the dogs follow Kumajiro around. Whatever the dogs know of Kuma’s presence, it seems they can sense his body heat. The dogs go from sleeping all in a pile together, to snuggling with the bear. Occasionally Kuma huffs and tries to move away, but all twelve dogs follow him every time.
  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The third morning begins as peacefully as the others, but with no small amount of disappointment that their vacation must come to an end. They do not speak about it. They do not have to. It is clear enough in how they reluctantly take apart their camp.
At least they will both be going through Lorino, so they will travel back together. Ivan must return the sled and the dogs to Zinaida, and Matthew’s return ship will leave from the harbor there.
Following the paths they’ve tread for three days now, the travel is faster, even if they don’t want it to be. The two teams burst out of the woods in a flurry of snow and coniferous evergreen needles. As long as they are in the woods they prioritize safety, but now the landscape stretches out around them again, flat and smooth. Ivan glances over at Matthew, the shape of his smile under his face guard. Matthew glances back, and briefly pulls down his face guard. His smile is better described as a mischievous grin when he calls out to his team, and suddenly they are racing away at full speed.
Shadow watches them pass by. When Ivan gives the call to keep pace with them, it feels like Shadow was waiting for it. Matthew’s laughter rings out across the ice when he glances back at them.
The last thing Ivan hears before the wind is roaring in his ears is a loud huff from behind him. Kuma had been keeping pace with them in the woods, but rather than speed up, Kuma starts to walk more slowly. The bear speaks into Ivan’s mind, I refuse to run.
By then Ivan is out of range to respond. He is confident Kuma will be able to find the town if they get out of view, because Matthew must be confident of that if he left the bear so far back in the first place.
Ivan’s dogs are slower than Matthew’s, so his chances of winning this impromptu race are none. When Lorino appears on the horizon, Matthew takes pity and slows his team down, allowing Ivan to pull up alongside them. The ride together into town. Matthew is still slightly ahead, but the fun doesn’t come from winning. Their smiles are equally wide as they stop outside Zinaida’s business.
“Well,” Matthew begins, “Thank you for inviting me to do this.” He does not unharness his dogs, likely planning on riding them to the boat.
“You are welcome,” Ivan answers honestly, “and you are welcome to come with me anytime.”
Matthew smiles sweetly. “Maybe we’ll make this an annual trip,” he adds.
Before Ivan can agree, Zinaida opens the door and the loose dogs rush towards her. Even as she turns away to keep them from jumping on her, she looks at Ivan appreciatively. Her relief at having all the dogs returned safely is palpable. Later, Ivan will offer to cook dinner for her and her family as another thank you.
A ship blows its horn to announce its approach, and Matthew interrupts, “I had better get going now, but seriously, thank you for inviting me.”
Ivan grabs his sleeve before he can get going. “We will do this again,” he states.
Matthew smiles, and calls “Hike!” to his team. Ivan watches them speed away.
“Did you have a good trip, then?” Zinaida asks behind him.
“Yes,” he answers, cold air burning his lungs, “Yes I did.”
anyway. beetlejuice red lantern au. father-daughter bonding through the dogsled timeloop.
(for those who dont know the game, red lantern spoilers obviously but basically youre sledding to your new home in alaska and have to hunt for food and manage resources along the way. every time you die you wake up back at the start with the previous attempt being a dream, but you learn from the dream and start again better prepared because of it. not explicitly a timeloop but i like to see it that way)
so after emily's death, charles' need for a fresh start is a bit more intense than in canon. i dont think theyre moving to alaska permenantly, but its definately at least a temorary move rather than just a holiday. lydia isnt really enthusiastic about her dads urge to reconnect with nature but doesnt entirely hate the idea, once he has the thought to frame it as a chance for interesting photography shes a bit more into it. does constantly make deadpan jokes about how theyre going to die in the wilderness but doesnt actually think theyre going to die, though shes somewhat apathetic to the idea.
so they buy a team of seven dogs. theres five in the game, but i figured with the two of them theyd have a bigger team. might change it but currently theyre betelgeuse, adam, barbara, tina, sally, sandy, and jock (jockey). designs and personalities will be based off their namesakes but they are just dogs, nothing supernatural going on with them. charles did not want betel but lydia found his dumb face and neediness endearing and begged for him, and he gave in.
anyway, they die. its way harder than charles thought and he overestimated his ability to survive. so they both die and they wake up back in the van they were using to get to the start of the trail. neither mention the unsettling deam they just had, but lydia suggests that maybe they should pick up a bit more food before they set off, and charles agrees.
they try again, and this time they do a little better. they get a bit further. they start to talk a little more.
and then they die again. and so it goes on.
Citizens of Ice Cream Land
Tumblr media
Now, we’re venturing out into all my fanmade lands! Here are the citizens of Ice Cream Land.
Ice Cream Land is ruled by King Dairycone and Queen Snowcorn, who are hybrids of German shepherds and ice unicorns like their kids. Dairycone is benevolent and caring, and he almost never gets angry. However, he’s known for having an easily breakable heart. Queen Snowcorn doesn’t talk often, and she’s very timid like Crystalline and Germafrost. They’re both as quiet and relaxed as life in their kingdom typically is. They’re sensitive to loud noises, and they can get overstimulated pretty quickly. Things have lately been hard for them due to Crystalline’s sudden passing. They’re especially worried for Germafrost, since he seemed to take it the hardest and suddenly disappeared.
Prince Neapolitan is Germafrost’s younger brother. He’s a huge night owl, so he often has trouble waking up in the morning. It sorta bugs out his parents, since they’re also rather punctual and try to get him to bed on time. He can be quite dramatic, and he speaks with much emphasis. He’s also pretty assertive. He likes to go outside the castle and hang out with people, such as Floela, whom is a close friend of his. He is an enthusiast for mythical beings and creatures, and he attends an annual mythical creature convention. He emphasizes with Germafrost’s feelings over losing Crystalline, so he wants to be a shoulder his brother can lean on. Neapolitan has his own vehicle, which is a snowmobile. He sounds like Zim, or Kaos from the Skylanders series.
Princess Crystalline was Germafrost’s older sister. She was very sweet, as well as shy like him. As timid and soft-spoken as she was, she was also super encouraging, and she was better at talking to others than Germafrost. The two of them were very close. She joined Germafrost in his games of soccer, or as Gelatarians call it, chip-ball. She encouraged him to follow his love for it, which is why he loves it so much. Once, a team of ice harvesters came to visit Ice Cream Land, and Crystalline befriended one of them. While she and Germafrost were out together one day, a falling pillar from an unsteady building crushed her. She succumbed to her injuries soon after.
Dawn and Jamison are Piano's parents. In Ice Cream Land, the living desserts' names usually come from what flavor they are, or what dessert they are. Dawn, a wedding cake-flavored ice cream creature, is one of the rare instances where that isn't the case. She's brainy, theoretical and passionate, but she gets upset when things don't work out the way she wants. She's super into physics, calculus, math, dessert chemistry, and computers. She desperately hoped that Piano would be her lab partner, but she learned to respect what her daughter wanted to do. Jamison is a longtime concert pianist, which inspired Piano's name. He has played in piano bars, nightclubs, restaurants and big hotels. He is kind and fatherly towards others.
Floela is a hybrid of a sled dog and a snowy owl. She has an open mind and is very free-spirited. She is a huge sweetheart who's super forgiving. She looks past everyone's negative qualities. She has a bad sense of direction, and she's also kind of insecure. She's allergic to pollen. Floela and Neapolitan are very good friends, and they attend the mythical creatures convention together. Floela is also a huge lover of butterflies, and she's got some feeders for them built on her home. She lives on an ice floe in Milkshake Lake.
Coco is a chocolate ice cream who’s known for being very chipper. She is serene, soft, and often filled with bliss. She is sensitive to bright and flashing lights. She’s quite fond of jazzy elevator music. She runs a cozy restaurant in Gelato Village called Bliss, where she sells hot chocolate and cheese bites.
Bananilla is a mix of banana and vanilla ice cream. She's a tranquil, laid-back person who's easy to talk to. She enjoys snowboarding along the ice cream scoop hills. She's quite observational as well. She's another friend of Neapolitan's who likes to play outside in the snow with him.
Randall, or Randy, is another rare case of not being named after your flavor/dessert. His flavor of ice cream is bubblegum. He also doesn’t have a lot to say because he’s usually got a wad of gum in his mouth. Because of this, he’s got a really strong set of jaws. He’s a bubbly fellow who’s bubbly in a peaceful, breezy sort of way.
Marshscotch is a combination of a marshmallow and a butterscotch square. He's squishy, bouncy and loves to climb things. It doesn't matter how high he goes so long as there's ground below his feet. He doesn't like being picked up. He and Neapolitan are also friends, and they've gone bobsledding together.
Mintfoot is a mint chocolate chip ice cream. His state of mind is as cool as the breeze. He doesn't let anything in life bring him down, and he lives his life in the best way he can. He's a friend of Germafrost's and likes to play chip-ball with him.
Toffee Chip is a vanilla ice cream with a bunch of toffee chips on his head. He's clever and good at coming up with plans. Other people see him as one of the smartest people they know. He's pretty slow, though. Even though he wasn't named Toffee Chip when he was born, it's his name, and he loves it.
Cottonette is a cotton candy ice cream. She's airy, charming and whimsical. Like many Gelatarians, she loves puppets and ventriloquism. She was part of the Young Puppeteers' Society in school. Despite how she might appear, when we first see her, she mentions that she's 31.
Sprinklehead is the closest thing Ice Cream Land has to someone who'd be comfortable living in the Unikingdom. He's a strawberry ice cream who's decorated with a bunch of sprinkles. He's energetic, colorful and adaptable, but he's got a breaking point, too (or a melting point, as he'd say).
Dough is an ice cream sandwich. He can get irritated and scornful when he's overwhelmed, or when someone disturbs the peace. He can be joking, but he's not always aware of when the joke is taken too far. He shovels snow for folks in his area.
Caramella is a caramel square. She's a serious confection; she tends to take things rather literally. Often times, she feels the need to correct people. She likes to keep things practical and factual, but she knows how to loosen up and have fun.
Wafflecone is, as his name would imply, a waffle cone. He doesn't like it when there are too many things happening and prefers to live an easy life. He's got an imaginative mind. He loves to make toys for people of all ages, and he works in his cousin's toy store.
Judge Fudge is a fudge square and a judge. It has walnuts baked into it. It hears proceedings in Ice Cream Land's courthouse. It's known for its problem-solving skills, its readiness, and its aversion to frivolity. It carries out the laws that the king and queen create and tries its best to keep things comfortable and cozy. And yes, its gavel is a popsicle.
Browncake is a mix of cake batter and brownie batter ice cream. It's courteous and enthusiastic about having a good time, but like most people in the kingdom, it doesn't like to be loud or get too crazy. It's a playful sweet who likes to bounce about in Sorbet Fields. It also keeps its fellow Gelatarians safe from sickness, since it gives them medicines for spoiling, discoloring, graininess, freeze burn and more. Browncake will often tell people what it prefers to be called, as that fluctuates for it day to day.
Olivia is another ice cream who isn't named after their flavor. Her flavor is peanut butter. She is also friends with Neapolitan. Olivia isn't that emotional or expressive, but that doesn't mean she's not happy. She's just in a perpetual state of calm. She's quite tough like a nut, and she shows a sense of determination. She enjoys playing ice hockey.
Sunday is an ice cream sundae who works in the palace. She looked after Germafrost and his siblings whenever their parents were busy. She washes towels, blankets and the laundry. She is intelligent, speaks her mind and has a good heart. She sometimes can be feisty. She can also repair furniture and fix holes in the walls.
Iceberry is a snow cone who is part of the Ice Cream Bowl Palace Guard, who keep Ice Cream Land and its inhabitants out of danger. His weapon of choice is a spear, the head of which is an ice cream cone. He spent much of his time outside as a kid, so he likes to be outdoors. He's spirited and colorful. Sometimes, though, he mistakes certain harmless things for danger, such as raves (which aren't commonplace in Ice Cream Land).
The Milkman is a cow with lots of thick fur. He's generous and calm to other people, and he radiates a huge sense of sweetness. Milk flows through streams and brooks throughout Ice Cream Land, and The Milkman harvests it from them. Then, he filters all the bad stuff from it and delivers it to people across the kingdom in large buckets.
Embrace the Wonders of Iceland’s Winter Season
Iceland, the land of fire and ice, transforms into a magical realm during the colder months. The winter season in Iceland offers breathtaking natural phenomena, thrilling adventures, and serene beauty, making it a dream destination for travelers seeking unique experiences. Whether you’re captivated by the shimmering northern skies or crave the soothing warmth of geothermal waters, Iceland has something extraordinary to offer.
Witness the Enchantment of the Northern Lights One of the most awe-inspiring natural wonders on Earth, the Northern Lights, draws travelers from all over the globe. The Northern Light season in Iceland typically spans from late September to early April, offering ample opportunities to witness this celestial dance. Clear, dark nights provide the perfect backdrop for the vibrant hues of green, pink, and purple that ripple across the Arctic sky. For those hoping to increase their chances of a successful sighting, heading away from the city lights is essential. Remote locations like Thingvellir National Park and the Snaefellsnes Peninsula provide ideal viewing spots where the beauty of the aurora can be fully appreciated.
A Comprehensive Iceland Visitors Guide Planning a trip to Iceland requires a bit of preparation, especially during the colder months when the weather can be unpredictable. An Iceland Visitors Guide is essential for navigating the island’s stunning landscapes and maximizing the winter experience. Start by packing warm, waterproof clothing, as Icelandic winters can be both cold and wet. Renting a sturdy vehicle is also advisable, particularly if you intend to explore off the beaten path. The ring road encircling the island offers a wealth of natural wonders, from cascading waterfalls to volcanic craters, all accessible with a well-planned itinerary.
Travelers should be mindful of limited daylight hours during the winter months, which can add an enchanting twist to the journey. With only a few hours of sunlight, the landscapes often appear in soft, ethereal twilight, perfect for photography enthusiasts. The guide should also highlight safety tips, such as checking road conditions and being aware of rapidly changing weather, ensuring an enjoyable and secure adventure.
Relax in the Tranquil Hot Springs No visit to Iceland is complete without experiencing the soothing warmth of its geothermal pools. The hot springs in Iceland are renowned for their restorative properties and provide a stark contrast to the chilly surroundings. From natural, rugged pools hidden in the wilderness to more developed geothermal spas, these hot springs offer a unique way to relax and rejuvenate.
Popular locations such as the Blue Lagoon may be well-known, but many travelers seek out lesser-known gems like the Secret Lagoon or Reykjadalur Valley, where one can soak in natural hot rivers surrounded by snow-covered landscapes. The mineral-rich waters are said to have healing properties, making them a favorite among locals and visitors alike. Soaking in these geothermal pools beneath a sky filled with stars or the flickering aurora is a truly unforgettable experience.
The Unique Beauty of Iceland’s Winter Season The winter season in Iceland is not just about the Northern Lights and hot springs. It’s also a time when the island’s natural beauty takes on a new form. Glaciers shimmer under the pale sun, ice caves glisten in stunning shades of blue, and frozen waterfalls stand as towering sculptures of ice. Guided tours to these ice caves are a must, offering a glimpse into a hidden world beneath the surface.
Adventurous visitors can explore the frozen wilderness through snowmobiling, ice climbing, or dog sledding. Each activity allows travelers to experience Iceland’s winter landscape in thrilling and memorable ways. Even those seeking a more tranquil experience will find solace in the quiet beauty of the snow-covered countryside, where time seems to slow down, and the only sounds are the crunch of snow underfoot and the whispering winds.
Conclusion Iceland’s winter is a season of contrasts: vibrant auroras and serene hot springs, icy landscapes and warm geothermal waters. The Northern Light season in Iceland and the rejuvenating hot springs in Iceland create an unforgettable blend of adventure and relaxation. With the help of a reliable Iceland Visitors Guide, travelers can immerse themselves in the island’s magic, exploring its wild beauty and embracing the tranquil charm of the winter season in Iceland. Whether seeking adventure or peace, Iceland in winter is a destination that promises memories to last a lifetime.
