doffiepoldark reblogged your audio post and added: âEpisode 39: Â A Cornish adventure! ITS HERE!!! This weekâs very special...â
loved the podacast & following your poldark...
So glad you enjoyed the podcast -- I am literally sitting in front of my computer in my pyjamas, watching the clock tick closer to when I have to go into the office and wishing with all my heart I didnât have to go. But I need the cash so I can go back to Cornwall. Dammit. Plus, Iâma need it so I can fly premium economy next time because nine hours in economy economy sucks eggs.Â
And I just looked at prices. Iâma need a fecking BOATLOAD of cash.

hello again!.. Following on from the stocking question, i began to wonder if women shaved their legs etc. back then. I know she's fair, but Demelza's legs looked silky smooth to me (elizabeth's too come to that) Would you know if that would be historically accurate? .. also what about men & shaving? What would ross use? I'd love to see a scene with Ross having a shave, or with demelza doing it for him ;)
Sorry for taking 20 years to answer this question! I needed to do some additional research because I didnât notice this when I wrote about the Stocking Scene.Â
The first straight razor was invented in the 1700âČs by Jean Jacques Perret. Most likely, thatâs what Ross would use for trimming his beard. Based on the paintings of the era, beards werenât really fashionable for the upper classes. If you notice on Poldark, the richer men are clean shaven or only have slight 5 oâclock shadows while the miners have sizable beards. This academic article goes into detail on menâs shaving habits in the 18th Century.Â
In terms of women removing their body hair, thereâs also nothing new under the sun there. The only difference is what was used to remove arm, leg, and genital hairs. Some women used their husbandâs straight razors. Among the French elites, the fashionable thing was using honey and wax for the 18th Century version of The Brazilian. This was referenced last season on Outlander. Fast forwarding a bit in time, thereâs no body hair on the woman in this nude painting by Francisco Goya. It was painted only 6 years after where we are right now in the plot.Â
Although the actresses are most likely grooming themselves using modern methods, in theory a woman in 1790âČs Cornwall could wax or use a straight razor if she wanted to. It appears to be a matter of personal preference since iâm not seeing much evidence for any sort of strict standards outside of the craziness of the French royal court.

hiya!.. i don't know if it's already been asked, i'm probably late.. but do you know why demelza has been wearing that big wide leather belt over her clothes?. ta x
Hi doffiepoldark,Â
This question isnât too late because Demelza is wearing the same belt in the 3x06 promos. I posted about the belt back when we first saw in 3x01. My best guess is that sheâs using it as a way to secure her caraco and undershirt to avoid wearing her full stays when sheâs doing chores around Nampara or farming work.Â

Love, Lust & Silk Stockings
Everyone was scrambling for a fan when Ross gives Demelza a pair of fine silk stockings in Season 2, episode 6. Unfortunately for the media, they missed the memo and are still stuck on the scything as the hottest thing on Poldark. Â @doffiepoldark asked for more historical details on Demelzaâs stockings.Â
Silk stockings for women and men were an essential part of the 18th Century wardrobe. Although I believe the picture in Winston Grahamâs head might have been closer to the stockings he gave his wife during the post-WWII era, the show and the novel gets the details right. This pair from 18th Century Sweden is the closest I can find to Demelzaâs in terms of the lack of striping, embroidery, and other details. Larsdatter has a handy guide to more extant examples silk stockings.Â
Stockings were avaliable in many colors. This Pinterest collection shows a wide variety of designs and patterns. The only difference between mensâ and womenâs stockings in many cases comes down to color preferences and calf width. Here is a sample of a pair Ross might have had underneath his boots and George might have worn with his knee-length breeches.Â
The picture above is an 18th Century engraving of a stocking frame. Most stockings, especially those worn by the upper classes were machine-knit in Nottinghamshire. For more info on how frame knitting worked, this link to the Frameworkerâs Museum is very helpful. Contrary to modern hosiery, most 18th Century stockings were made with materials with very little stretch as the Marquise.de blog points out. Ribbon garters were the most common way stockings were secured to the thigh or upper calf. Larsdatter has a collection of art/documents that depict 18th Century garters. All stockings were made in two large pieces sewn together. Often, a third piece called a gore was sewn in between to adjust the fit. Many stockings for men and women had what was called âclockingâ or knitted/embroidered designs. Hand-knitted and fabric stockings were not considered high fashion and were usually reserved for winter layering covered by boots or for those of little means.Â
The way Ross ties Demelzaâs stockings above the knee is consistent with Francois Boucherâs âLa Toileletteâ painting which is from the 1740âČs. Any artwork from that time that shows stockings underneath a dress was probably old timey erotica. If you think about it, erotic is the perfect word for describing the scything scene.Â
For those of you who want a pair of silk stockings like Demelzaâs, you have two options. You can do what I did and buy a pair from American Duchess, or you can be hardcore and make them yourself.  Rebecca Mantheyâs stocking tutorial is frequently used by living history reenactors. If youâre handy with knitting needles, Mara Riley has a tutorial for more Grandma-style 18th Century style stockings. If you want to DIY Demelzaâs ribbon garters, The Pragmatic Costumer has a great tutorial. Unfortunately, none of these tutorials can tell you how to get your own brooding Cornishman to put them on for you.
If youâre burning for more information about 18th Century accessories, the Ask Box can put out that fire!
