I am a Ruan Mei defender, not because I think she's a blameless misunderstood character, but bc I am very afraid of people interpreting her terrible actions as bad writing bc "the game still expects us to like her" or overexaggerating her bad traits in order to make Dr. Ratio look better by comparison.

And that's not to say I think Ratio is a "bad" guy either, I think the whole point of introducing him alongside Ruan Mei was to highlight how different the Genius Society operates compared to "normal" academics. Ratio's over the top arrogance makes him off-putting at first, but his genuine desire to spread knowledge to everyone who wants to learn it is the perfect contrast to the obsession and selfishness of the Genius Society, who only ever care about fulfilling their own desires without concern for those below them. Even Screwllum, the member who seems the most sociable and friendly, let Ratio carry on with his antics on the space station just to see what would happen, even though it put the Trailblazer in danger and threatened the whole facility.

So that is to say, Ruan Mei is like that on purpose. We aren't supposed to see her drugging us and sending us after an incomplete Emanator of Propagation and be confused as to how she's a "goody guy." She isn't. None of the members of the Genius Society are "good" people just bc we're allied with them. Herta uses Traliblazer as a guinea pig for the Simulated Universe after all, and we now know that as long as it's something he's curious about, Screwllum won't interfere to protect us even when he's already figured out the solution to the problem we're facing.

But I also want to do a little apologism for Ruan Mei bc sometimes the accusations I see lobbed at her is a bit much. Like, yeah, she drugged us, but it was a temporary inhibitor that literally only stopped us from giving people information about Ruan Mei. And she didn't do it just to fuck with us? Ruan Mei is incredibly aware of how emotionally detached she is and knows it's almost impossible for her to understand the affection given to her by her creations. She doesn't drug us out of some evil desire to control information, she does it bc she knows her time on the space station is temporary and wants to avoid leaving behind any memories of her being there. That doesn't make it okay and it's still presented alongside everything else she does that's uncaring towards TB and her creations, but it makes it a little more complicated than just "she's an unfeeling sociopath that would happily watch us die." It's bad, but it's also one of Ruan Mei's weird and not good ways of showing consideration.

It's interesting, is what I'm saying. It's compelling. And I don't really dig how it she gets reduced to a two-bit manipulator.

I'm a bit of a stickler for this particular thing bc it's something I truly adore about HSR's writing, and also something I see as one of the game's core themes. There is no clear divide between "good" guys and "bad" guys. The Genius Society is full of emotionally constipated weirdos who wouldn't pay a single bit of attention to us if we weren't interesting to them, but they're also important allies to the Express. The Stelleron Hunters are our biggest opposition and wreak havoc on whatever planet they enter, but we know that their goals somewhat align with our own and unless you go out of your way to be mean to her with every dialogue option, it's pretty obvious that Kafka is someone Trailblazer loves.

And even Cocolia, someone who almost destroyed the last remnants of civilization on her own planet, gets treated with sympathy. Bronya is allowed to mourn her mother and still see her as an aspirational figure, all the while Serval is allowed to break off ties with her and definitively move on from her past.

It's a theme that carries over to a lot of HSR's important side quests too, where often you're expected to choose between two options that both have some pretty heavy downsides no matter what. You have your own moral compass, and along the way the choices may seem crystal clear, but it's never so black and white as you predict. It's a game about decisions, about making your own way in life and learning about the different worldviews of those you meet. Good or bad, helpful or hurtful, it's not always so obvious as "this person did something bad to me, now I will forever dislike them."

Lucifer is a huge transmisogynist who will complain 24/7 about how TERFs hurt the ace community, but the moment @randomclustermissile , a trans girl (who is not an exclusionist at all) tries to point out transmisogyny in inclusionist circles (in the most vague and general way possible, without pointing fingers nor calling anyone names) Lucifer will immediatly jump to block her and so they did with me (another inclusionist) and i have to suppose to everyone else who agreed with that post, even arriving to vagueing about us in private group chats to suggest that we were “sympathizing with exclusionists”. all because we dared point out transmisogyny in inclusionist circles. lucifer is TME but apparently they think they’re the authority on TERFs and their talking points but actual trans women are not, according to them, since this is the stuff that they would go and spew to other people. this is their post that ive already talked about but basically they found a 52 notes post made by a TERF in 2012 and this one person said "i dont know why i dont get to be the princess of the anti-ace-brigade" and apparently they are convinced that this means TERFs started the ace exclusionism movement and that this is one of their goals. which is insane when TERFs in real life only care about making life miserable for transfem people first and foremost.

another example of conflating radfems to things that, while wrong, have little to nothing to do with them because being a radfem, again, is something very specific that has all to do with transfem oppression.

Emotional manipulation

Lucifer has done nothing but block, break boundaries, spread lies and vague about people, some of which were even mutuals with them knowing they would see the posts. when confronted about it Lucifer's only answer was "just say you hate me and block me" but they actually ended up blocking everyone first, making it impossible for anyone to set some boundaries with them or even just to calmly confront them about anything.

[proof: Io(popncourse) and Lucifer had a disagreement in a shared discord server, which prompted Lucifer to vague Io in a vent post. Io confronted them, as being vagued is one of buns triggers, to which Lucifer initially agreed to delete the vent post, but then proceeded to victimize themself and immediatly blocked Io. later on, Jude(malewifedeckard) was confronted by Lucifer, then after Jude told them “I’m worried that you’ll vague me just like you did with Io” they proceeded to block Jude and vagued about him too. when Io made a post (which was not a callout, it was just bun setting buns boundaries) explaining what Lucifer did, Lucifer immediatly jumped to victimize themself, acting like they were being called out and straight-up lying, even going so far as to say that no one tried to hear them out, which is a blatant lie if you consider the aforementioned Io and Jude’s attempts at doing so, with Lucifer immediatly blocking and cutting ties with the both of them. ]

as seen in the proof above Lucifer’s behaviour is not ok because they don’t accept any kind of confrontation and immediatly jump to blocking, and after blocking, they'd immediatly go and vague about the people who confronted them pacificly, spreading more lies and painting themself as the victim and even arriving to say “no one hears me out at all” which is simply not something you can say when you block people who are trying to hear you out in the first place.

this is by no means an invitation to go and harass them, send them hate or anything like that. i absolutely don’t want anything even remotely hateful or negative to be sent their way after this post. 

this post was only made because:

1. as an ace person who fully supports the inclusion of aspec identities in the lgbt+ community i don’t want to support an enviroment that costantly downplays transmisogynistic oppression in order to be taken seriously. there are hundreds of ways to make aspec activism without acting like we(as in TME aspecs)are the victims of a system that seeks for the annihilation of transfemenine people in real life everyday. i especially don’t want to support TME individuals who act transfem-friendly but then block any transfem who tries to speak on transmisogyny without a second thought.

2. Lucifer’s behaviour has hurt two friends of mine and i don’t want to associate with someone who actively breaks people’s boundaries without taking accountability when messing up.

3. i cannot associate with someone who spreads lies about me accusing me of sympathizing with exclusionists all while having me blocked so that i can’t see it nor defend me. they complain about people not hearing them out but they’re the very first person who does not try to hear people out, and instead jumps to spread baseless rumors. this is not someone i can nor want to associate with.

I think her silver medal is with Rhea though, in the same "no u" map. Earlier she told Billy Rhea manipulated humans to put dragons on top, and then in their battle quote Rhea is all "your ancestor saved and protected me. I'm so sad I have to fight his descendant" but Edel, instead of reconsidering all of her "sekrit" knowledge and how maybe if Wilhelm had just be a pawn Rhea wouldn't be so sad, answers with "lol i'm not going to die to you".

Localization/translation discussion... 👀

Yeah, I noticed that as well in AM. The only times she directly responded to him, he always had a comeback and she didn't really justify herself so much as explain what she was doing. When she tried, like I said, he had a proper comeback and it got to the point that he gave up because she just wasn't listening.

The thing that frustrates me most about that conversation is precisely that though - she doesn't listen when faced with the truth. She can't accept that what she's doing isn't good and that she's hurting people. She could easily admit she messed up and made mistakes but that it's too late to go back now, yadda yadda, but when she's cornered in a conversation she changes the topic or talks about something else that sounds similar.

A way of telling if someone is like this and the true villain of a story (not to say TWS aren't also the true villains, hence why I also wish CF had you working with them as playable characters and whatnot) is the way they never admit their wrongs. All the lords (again, including Yuri bc I do count him as one) and Rhea admit when they fucked up and apologize for it. Claude's wrongs are on a lesser scale, but he does admit to using and manipulating people for his own ends. It IS for a better world but of course he isn't using that as an excuse when it comes to admitting he's been pulling some strings. Sometimes he's pushy and rude (very much mainly pre-ts), but he isn't blind to or refusing to see that he's doing that. Dimitri is a more obvious one via his arc and same with Rhea in SS/VW, and Yuri admits he does what he does to protect his own people and he has no shame in that. He's willing to get his hands dirty, he knows he's doing that, and he doesn't shy away from it, and I appreciate that he's up front about it and that he knows he can use questionable tactics (same with Claude - he knows he's questionable sometimes).

I think for me at least personally, it's frustrating that people argue morals when they technically weren't supposed to be there. As you know, as someone who has been involved in translation/manga scanlation for a long time now, it hits heavy for me when context is lost or warped. That's part of why I don't like Edelgard even as a character (versus liking her as a person, because while I don't, I also find that her writing - mainly her localization - is a contradictory issue). When working on the projects I do, my aim is to keep context as close as possible and not lose the original meaning even if we have to alter text to make it sound right in English or because something had to be changed due to it being that it just wouldn't make sense in translation.

Things like this, all the confusion surrounding her character and real intentions, is exactly why I don't like translation alterations. It also pulls me out of the game when a character can't really back themselves up due to the writing being confusing and just... bad. Not to say the entire localization is bad, because sometimes it's really good, but for CF I found that a lot of the time I didn't like the route because something about it always felt off to me... come to find out later that it was a translation issue.

Tbh I'd love to play the game in JP and I really should honestly. The voice acting in English is what's kept from doing that because the voice acting is so good. I much prefer it over the JP for this game, and of course it helps that the voice actors (many of them, honestly) interact with the fandom and do streams of various games and are so welcoming.

I'm not sure if you're familiar with the Tales franchise, but Tales of Hearts R had a similar issue with localization, though the fans actually recognized the slip ups and problems with it because the audio is JP only and there's no English audio and only English text. Hearing the audio and seeing the text was... something else, ngl lol. The localization is pretty infamous for being too much of an attempt at being quirky and goofy, and it came out sounding really dumb most of the time. There were instances where they'd have entire lines of dialogue for a very small comment or vice versa. I LOVE Hearts R no question, but dealing with the localized text is pretty painful. I'm at least grateful I can hear the real story through audio, though of course I'm not fluent in JP and I can always stand to learn more so sometimes there are instances where I can't make out a whole piece of dialogue and have to rely on the awkward goofy localization.

There were definitely some instances where I found Rhea's localization to be okay, like the part you mention here. Sometimes her actual character does shine through, but then of course Edelgard's responses are off topic. I'm not sure how many times that was the localization doing that and how many times it was actually like that since I haven't looked particularly deeply into CF's localization (mainly because as we're discussing, it just doesn't sit right with me), but it's still causing a lot to be desired. I don't really have that issue with other routes in terms of context.

Tl;dr translation is very important to how a story is consumed by people who aren't playing in the original language and it can completely change perceptions and opinions. Me no likey bad changes. Me likey understandable, reasonable changes that don't try to glorify characters that were not glorified in the original context.

Imagine if we glorified Ashnard. Oh wait, we did... through Edelgard. Because they're basically the same person LUL. Except Ashnard is a way cooler villain and he owns it like a boss.

Like no, literally, Edelgard is just female Ashnard written really badly and that's all there is to it. I am sending you this ask bc I know that you try to make objective analyses of the show. I just wanted to point out something that I keep seeing in many tv shows, including hsmtmts. I don't like how they romanticise the idea of someone homewrecking a relationship bc of love. What Ricky did was wrong. At least in Descendants Mal and Ben apologised to Audrey. I really hope that the show will address this in the future seasons and teach the viewers to "never put passion in front of principle".

i do try to do like- some decent analysis on this show, so I'm kinda excited to see this ask and such :) thank you for sending it!

i will note really quickly that i don't want to claim to be like- entirely objective in any whole sense of the word. no one is. our opinions are clouded by our own perceptions of what we see. it's also been like- a fairly solid amount of time since i've seen a vast majority of season 1.

another quick note: with some of this i do defend ricky as a character, because i see him get hated on quite a large amount, but this answer is critical of the actions he takes. i'm just not going to sit here condemning him wholeheartedly for being flawed, all of the characters are. we don't have to throw the baby out with the bathwater. (btw this note isn't for you specifically anon, i love talking about these types of things, just- a caveat of sorts for people who may read this).

there's a lot of media that does use this sort of trope, and tbh cheating which comes to mind for me here, is a lot worse for me than the homewrecking thing, i truly hate the cheating trope with a passion, but it is definitely not the greatest thing morally to actively pursue someone you know is seeing someone else.

i will say the mal, ben, and audrey triangle in descendants which i've also seen is definitely a bit complicated compared to the hsmtmts triangle, given there's like- love potions involved bc this is a fantasy universe. tbh it's a huge red flag that that's how things started between them in the first place, even if he's supposedly just properly into her regardless after the spell has been broken. idk- i don't like it. like i know there are nuances, and it's disney, so it's not that deep, but- i still really don't appreciate it. i think mal 100% owed audrey an apology though, honestly she owed an apology to ben too for controlling and manipulating him.

you're right that ricky shouldn't have tried to get between ej and nini. it wasn't fair to nini to continue pursuing her this way and ignoring that she was with ej (nor was it fair to ej, but obviously ricky has no loyalties to ej, so that doesn't necessarily matter to the same extent).

to the writing's credit- i think it's SO important that a) we see that nini does still love ricky, particularly when she sings all i want in 1.04 "this song's still for you", which is then reinforced obviously when she initiates their second almost kiss in 1.08 (meaning we're not supposed to be against him in wanting her back), and b) that nini and ej don't end things because of ricky's pursuit of nini.

we can argue the nuances of that whole voicemail situation all day, and ricky was probably overstepping by sending it, but it's not his actions that cause the breakup. it's ej's own reckless choices that do. ej was right to be jealous about ricky in a way, because we find out that nini does like ricky, but at the same time, it is a trust thing. ej should be able to trust his girlfriend. that was going to be an issue regardless.

ej and nini weren't right for each other, and it's obvious this was just a stepping stone for rini to get back together, but you're absolutely right, that ricky wasn't being a good friend to nini in his pursuit of her, which is- arguably, what she needed at the time. they were best friends before they dated, and while it wasn't going to go right back to that, i think that's kind of what would've been her own best case scenario, just friendship of some kind. after their breakup in the hallway, he was definitely hurt, and that's okay, but while bettering himself to be worthy of nini's eye is positive behavior and isn't inherently an issue, actively trying to get between her and ej (which is where this gets complicated), is a problem.

it's a complicated situation, with a less complicated framing, where we sort of see ricky going after nini who's ej's girlfriend and it's like at first we see nini and we're like oh she's happy what's this idiot who broke her heart trying to do now... but then we see that it's not that simple. but then it is that simple at the same time.

even if nini isn't necessarily 100% satisfied with her relationship with ej, that doesn't make it more morally right to get between them. how much of his actions were to put a wedge between nini and ej versus how much was to prove himself to her, is where the morality kinda balances for me, and honestly- i don't know how much falls on either side.

i do want to note that i don't find what he does here any more morally reprehensible than any of the other characters' actions that we're also supposed to more or less brush over, but you're absolutely right that he's not exactly mr. perfect. in the same way we learn ej isn't, even though that's how ej is introduced. (which is funny bc we sorta meet ricky more through how he broke nini's heart, but then we learn that he is a really good guy who really does care for her.)

ricky does give up trying to pursue nini after some time, because he realizes that well- it's not fair to her. i love that ricky can't have nini's eye until he's sort of decided he probably can't have her. it's the same sort of thing as how gina was never going to get a lead until she stopped feeling entitled to one. (tbh in my mind this is the first season she's actively in contention for a lead role and i'm excited for her). as long as ricky thought that he could have nini back and continued on that assumption, he was never going to be able to, but he learned, and he grew, and he was able to deserve her again.

as to the show addressing this in the future, given there's been no real like- ej / nini / ricky related issue since season 1, beyond i suppose you could say the conversation in 2.10 about "letting her go", i doubt we're going to have much chance at a conversation about this whole ordeal. they could prove me wrong, because if season 3 is, as i suspect, at the same camp nini and ej went to pre-season 1, they might take the opportunity for ricky to be like hey, ej, i'm sorry for trying to break you and nini up, that wasn't fair. and ej'll be like hey it's fine, we weren't exactly right for each other anyway. if they do it, it'll probably be very quick and dismissive.

i say this because the way the whole narrative was framed, the ej and nini relationship would've ended anyway, even if not for ricky's interferences, and then also because we're so far past that point now. heck ricky and nini aren't even together anymore. if we were going to get any kind of real conversation between ricky and ej about this, it would've had to happen early season 2. especially given ej and ricky seem pretty much chill in season 2 by and large. they're not like- particularly close, but they're not cold to one another by any means. ej being completely over nini (2.10) kinda closes off any real reason the show has to feel the need to address it.

i want to see the callbacks to the ej/nini relationship go on with the summer camp season, i think it's a waste not to use it in some way, but that's another post for sure. not because of ej and nini's relationship, but because of the vibes. i love a good parallel moment.

lowkey i very much love the phrasing there, "passion in front of principle", because that's what the situation is at its core.

it's what i hate about the cheating trope. i think the person in the relationship is obviously the most at fault when there's cheating involved, but knowingly getting involved with someone you're aware is in a relationship isn't great either.

i don't think that's necessarily a lesson this show plans on teaching, because to me so much of the show is about following your heart even when that's not the easiest thing. that theme plays out in a lot of ways across the narrative, but i think leading with your heart is why nini ends up with ricky necessarily instead of ej, and why that oh so heavily promoted triangle is so easily decided between for viewers of season 1. nini's heart is with ricky even if ej is the smart choice maybe, he's "perfect on paper". it's why nini comes home from yac even though her moms have had to do so much to be able to afford it and even though it's what she thought she wanted.

i think it's a good lesson, for like- real people, that you should behave in a more moral way and not let your own feelings get in the way of how you treat other people, but in terms of this show, i just- wouldn't anticipate it.
