Okina Matara:
The third and most recent of Gensokyo's founders to appear, is Okina Matara, the Secret God. She is a god of many things. A mother god. A god of the disabled and ostracized. A god of Noh theater. A god of silkworm breeding and insect metamorphosis. Perhaps most notably, she's the god of backdoors.
Okina Matara is a god of immense power, on par with if not more powerful than Yukari Yakumo. She boasts that she could snap Gensokyo out of existence and then back into existence without breaking a sweat. Essentially, the only reason why anyone in this series is still alive is because Okina Matara sees no reason to kill them.
While ZUN has implied Hecatia is more powerful, there hasn't been any real comparison between them to show this. Especially since Hecatia doesn't really throw her weight around the way Okina does.
As far as her actual powers, they primarily revolve around creating backdoors on anything. In this way she is able to open portals to and from anywhere in almost the same way Yukari can. Her backdoors can also be opened up on anyone's behind and transfer immense power to them.
Okina Matara first appeared as the main villain and final boss of Touhou 16: Hidden Star in Four Seasons. She used her backdoors, along with her backup dancers, to draw out the latent powers of people in Gensokyo. Allegedly, her plan was to find powerful people to hire as replacement minions for Satono and Mai. However, her real plan was simply to announce herself to Gensokyo, and remind everyone of her and her vast powers. Her reactions to the player character depend on who you're playing as.
• She rejects Reimu on the spot, saying that she's already Yukari's servant, she doesn't want the Hakurei Shrine maiden.
• She also rejects Aya on the spot, as warding off Tengu is another of her many domains.
• She doesn't even consider Cirno as a potential servant and reprimands her dancers for letting some stupid fairy inside.
• With Marisa, however, she actually asks the ordinary witch to become her new servant. However, Marisa refuses, not wanting to replace her life of freedom with being a mindless pawn.
During the initial fight, she turned the protagonist's season energy against them, since the power came from her putting a door on their back in the first place. She was seemingly invincible.
However, the protagonists challenged her to a rematch for the Extra Stage, where the protagonist used the power of Doryu (the Chinese concept of the border between seasons) to defeat her properly. It was here she revealed her true form... which pretty much looks the same as normal except she's not on her chair.
Since then, she's manipulated events in Gensokyo from the shadows. While she doesn't seem to outright want to replace her backup dancers, she has a pattern of finding one person in Gensokyo she really likes, and slowly manipulating events to their advantage, seemingly to gain their support. Maybe she really does want new minions?
She quickly appeared again in Touhou 16.5: Violet Detector. Or rather, her Dream World counterpart did. Here, she gave a power boost to the Dream World Sumireko because she admired her determination to escape the Dream World into reality.
She appeared in The Grimoire of Usami, showing up alongside Shinmyoumaru and Seija when they hijacked Reimu's fireworks festival. She was quickly revealed to have acted as an anonymous benefactor for Shinmyoumaru, subtly leading her to people who would agree with her view that spellcards are a weapon first and foremost. It seems that she was trying to play "catch up" on all the powerful women she missed out on during her long absence. She especially loved Junko's appearance, and was impressed when it turned out Junko's murder-frenzy was just an act.
She then appeared as the main antagonist of the finale of the manga Visionary Fairies in Shrine. She used her vast powers to turn almost all the fairies of Gensokyo into red crystals called Soul Cherries, which in turn reduced Gensokyo to a barren wasteland. The remaining fairies (which of course consisted of all the named ones) figured out she was behind it and challenged her to a fight to save their friends.
It was a one-sided slaughter and Okina wasn't even trying very hard. Okina grabbed Clownpiece by the neck, and told her to tell her superiors about the power of Gensokyo's Hidden God. She then immediately changed mood and turned all the fairies back to normal! It turns out the entire reason for her plan, was that she had heard that the forces of Hell were intruding into Gensokyo, and she wanted to test if they were actually planning on taking over. Hecatia actually told Clownpiece to collect all the Soul Cherries and take them to Hell, but Clownpiece defied her master/mother figure, and Okina figured they really weren't a threat.
Her most recent appearance was in Touhou 17.5: Sunken Fossil World. Here, she lured people down into the deepest levels of Old Hell in order to fight the main villain, but her real target was Flandre Scarlet, returning in a game for the first time in 20 years! More about that later.
ZUN has said Okina Matara is loosely based on him wanting to show that disabled people weren't useless or weak, but were actually stronger for it. I say loosely, because Okina isn't actually handicapped, as ZUN was scared of portraying her offensively or making her disability an informed attribute. She is often seen in a wheelchair, but apparently this is not because she's disabled, but because she represents disability as a concept. She's perfectly capable of walking around if she wants. Personally I think it'd be easier if she just was wheelchair bound rather than that roundabout symbolism explanation but that's me.
Okina Matara is based on two different dieties: Matara-jin, and Okuninushi. If she really is both gods, then she's connected even further to the people of Gensokyo than you could ever know. She saved the White Hare of Inaba (Tewi Inaba) from being skinned alive. She adopted the human guise of Hata no Kawakatsu and knew Shoutoku Taishi (Miko) personally. Shoutoku comissioned her to make 66 masks, effectively making her the mother of Kokoro. She was even the father of Takeminakata, and thus should technically be Kanako's mom or mother-in-law! And yes, you heard me right, he was a dude in the original mythology.
Okina has a fairly... incomprehensible morality. Generally she acts callous towards Gensokyo, perfectly content with turning it into a barren wasteland to get what she wants. Yet, she also has a soft side. She allowed dozens of servant youkai to "work from home" in her pocket dimension for seemingly no reason other than the goodness of her heart. In general, whenever she appears, it's because she's found someone neglected by Gensokyo (not necessarily the fans), she becomes obsessed with them, and manipulates events to show the true potential of this person, often directly assisting them.
Furthermore, while she is god of the ostracized, she respects anyone who shows impressive power and doesn't hold back. In general, ZUN describes her as "one of the old gods", a woman beyond human concepts of morality. But with absolute certainty, she is an immense boon as an ally and a nightmare as an enemy.
Her relationship with the other Sages is bittersweet. She seems to enjoy Kasen's company, but Kasen hates her as much as Yukari. Her interactions with Yukari in the Grimoire of Usami show them as something of... frenemies. Yukari insults her and calls her a casual fan of Gensokyo, but they seem to respect each other's power.
Her relationship with her backup dancers is a bit mixed as well. She considers them incompetent and sometimes wants to replace them, but it seems that bumbling is also just endearing enough to her that she keeps them around.
Each of those flames on her represents a different season: orange for autumn, blue for winter, pink for spring, and green for summer.
In her first fight, she shoots kunai according to this four-color pattern. In her second fight, however, she fires kunai in reverse-rainbow order, beginning with purple and moving back to red and then magenta.
In her first fight, her spellcards are based on the four seasons, with the last attack being the season of the player character. In this last attack, she sucks out the seasonal powers of the player character, weakening them. She also takes you out of the World of Backdoors and all around Gensokyo!
In her Extra boss fight, her spellcards are based on all her various domains, like silkworm breeding, burning rituals to scare away Tengu, or theatre performers. They mostly emphasize her nature as god of backdoors, with many of them involving her attacking you from behind. She also has an attack where laser beams fire at you from the shape of the Big Dipper. Her final attack has her shooting a bunch of magenta laser rings at you while she moves around in circles, called "Anarchy Bullet Hell". This is a pun on "anaaki", meaning "holed" in Japanese.
In Sunken Fossil World, her attacks create portals to throw all kinds of liquid at you: water, petroleum, and blood.

Poor Yakumo and his confidence and self-worth issues. I think we need some hot and steamy body worship headcanons for our sweet snake to help him out. Please 🥺
Yakumo body worship with GN-Reader NSFW
Foreplay
The idea had been formulating in your brain for a long while and you decided to put it into action the next time things decided to get steamy. After Yakumo had left for a few days to visit his grandparents and now that he was back he was nervously pawing at you. So you put your plans into motion.
You take his hands and lightly hold them so he can’t pull away and start kissing his face, leading down to his jawline. He lets out a whine and you can feel him getting hard. Muttering praise under your breath as your hands glided down when he gulped you knew you had him hook line and sinker.
His ears are intensely sensitive, especially around his gemstone just kissing it and calling him beautiful is enough to get him trembling. Panting and trying to shy away from the praise, but you won’t let him. Not this time.
He gets worked up if your lips find his stomach. The muscle tensing and twitching under. He doesn’t have abs, but he’s lean and soft, and when you mutter that into his stomach just how much you love it under your lips.
Praising his thighs as you run your hands down them drives him crazy as he pants hard as scales flicker up on his pale flesh. Smooth and delectable looking, when you tell him and kiss along all them he grits his teeth and begs you not to tease him like this, you just figure you have to show him this isn’t teasing, this is worshiping. You want him to feel like a god by the end of this.
Sex
Pulling out his cock you can’t help but complement it while licking your lips. You make sure to kiss the leaking tip. Looking up at him with a smile praising him and telling him over and over again how much you love each part.
Should you be the one to slide into him, he wraps his arms and legs around you shaking and gasping for air. His whole body shuttering. But you make sure to tell him how wonderful he feels around you. How marvelous he looks around you even better when he’s covered in sweat and all red.
So you move the way he likes, doing all the work so he feels fantastic just like he deserves. Roll into his prostate over and over till his eyes are rolling to the back of his head all while running your hands over his body and telling him how beautiful he is.
Letting him fuck you, he loves moving slowly at first, but only do get used to how warm you are. But you don’t let up. Telling him how big he is. How great he feels inside you. You make sure to put your body on display to show just how good he makes you feel.
If you ride him, he’ll try to buck into you, even more so when he’s close to cumming. His cock twitching and throbbing hard right before he cums. And when he does he’s trembling wildly before going somewhat limp.
Depending on how much you ‘teased’ him he might hold on tight and want to go a few more times.
Aftercare
If you truly want to spoil him and make him feel appreciated continue to compliment him as you clean up, and help him too. He’ll start to relax after a bit instead of trying to squirm away.
He melts if you massage his limbs. Letting out hums and a smile so wide that it makes you melt just as much. He won’t mind if you also kiss each limb you working on. He really enjoys your warm lips on his cool skin.
He’ll want to return the favor but insisting that it’s his time to feel nice still has him a bit skittish, and even a bit teary-eyed. He’ll just ask if he can hold you. If you toss in a few more compliments before he might try to hide under the sheets.
But it's nice to see him so cheery even a few days after. Maybe you should do it more?

oohhh i'll eventually write details about it (cause as kaisei talks about it, ciro will pop them back to the present with some kind of comment about the story, that's just how he is - a good listener y'know)
but the gist of it is that kaisei had a really good friend growing up, and when they were about 10-11, kaisei made it a little obvious he had a thing for him. they were walking home together, and before the friend left to go to his house, kaisei stopped him and gave him a hug - but it just... felt different. the way kaisei put his arms around his friends neck, the way his body seemed just a bit too close, the friend didn't say anything about it, but they both knew it was awkward. kaisei never did tell this friend how he felt, but he knew in some way that even if he did, he'd have lost him sooner anyways. they parted ways after going to different high schools, and it was in high school that kaisei kinda... explored things a teeny bit more?
he never told anyone straight up "hey im gay!!" but it's.... y'know, people knew. im thinking there was a guy that started realizing himself that he wasn't feeling the way about girls that he used to, and in private reached out to kaisei because "well, he's like that right?"
details aside, kaisei agrees to try things out with him, and unfortunately, the guy realizes before doing something (sweats) that nope, he actually can't do this and leaves (imagine kaisei left in an empty classroom sitting on the floor by the door like "huh. well this actually sucks and i'm not happy i did that." it happens once more when he's in high school, but the second time, the guy doesn't chicken out but at the same time, he's not sure what to do with the fact that he liked doing it with a guy.
(Puff from the future - this guy turned out to be yakumo, he and kaisei were friends in hs before they ended up doing things and that will get elaborated on later)
both times in high school ended up leaving kaisei with a bitter aftertaste because neither guy even wanted to entertain the idea of possibly dating a guy (him), so both times he was left with this like.... not heartbreak, but a hollow feeling. like he was just used because people knew he would try it with them (even though it only happened twice).
when he's out of school, he finds himself trying to date guys, but it usually ends up one of two ways - if he meets them in a way that they both Know Whats Up, the other guy tends to preface everything with "nothing serious" (which kaisei wants something serious, he always has, but at the same time he'll take whatever he can get because he still craves that attention and affection) and if he meets guys that he's unsure if they're gay, 90% of the time they end up not. and so for a while, kaisei's track record of relationships is. well, not great (non-existent, technically). that's why when he meets ciro, and ciro gives him that Vibe, he gets excited, like maybe!!! maybe this time will be different, finally!!!
and why when he finds out about ciro's ex-gf, he thinks the way he does. that of course not, he was getting ahead of himself again, reading into things too much, and only settting himself up for an ending he was all too familiar with.
and it's why he starts to almost cut ciro off. what's the point after all, he knows even if they were still friends, it would be just like when he was a kid. having to hide how he felt, and never really being able to let himself try to find someone else because whenever he'd be around ciro, he'd only be able to think about those feelings.
that moment on the way home after the party feels so much heavier too now. actually, like kaisei's words, "Hey, stop me if you don't want this, okay?" are his way of saying fuck it, i'll try and if he hates it let it be now and let me just know already - he's tired of carrying these feelings around if they'll never amount to anything. so when he pulls away, and ciro just pulls him back in, it'...
it's everything he'd ever wanted.
(Future puff again - this scene still happens, but its while they're still at the afterparty. Ciro is more involved in asking questuons and talking to kaisei openly during it as well, as it just makes more sense if theres a conversation about it before they started feeling close again. I'll talk about that more later too--)
God i need to sit down and put all these events in order at some point lmao
For my sanity as well as anyone else's who is remotely interested in these two
#ciro#kaisei#oc#rambles#rambling#some of this is oldish and shifted around but i thought i had posted this oh my god lol#me: why dont people know this about kaisei#because you never posted it dummy

Chapter 130:
So before we get to Yakumo's reaction, first...what the hell is the deal with her and Huang? Huang turns out to be still manipulating her but with a sprinkle of the truth this time by revealing what she actually is. Her guy asks if she's sure about allying with Three Eyed-Pai but Huang says that when she becomes a Wu, she and Yakumo will be the least of her problems. See, there's the other thing, she says she's going to be a Wu but to which triclops? Simple: She's going to become Pai's Wu.
Meanwhile, a couple of monsters are watching the mansion and noticing the weird shit going on. They know about Huang's plan and they ask the Leopard Mask Guy, whose name I've also forgotten, what to do next. He answers that they'll wait and see, not wanting to jump the gun before they know what's going on.
So Yakumo...what's his answer? First, he's tending to Ling-Ling's bedside while Three-Eyed-Pai asks what he's doing. She just said she was going make him another Benares! Not surprisingly, Yakumo says no, telling Three-Eyed-Pai even if they got more power, the people she's in charge of are only trying to take advantage of her abilities. Until they become humans, they'll always be pawns. Three-Eyed-Pai reminds him that it's impossible to do that but Yakumo wants to try. She says while he's "trying", the world is in risk of destruction. Yakumo argues back that humans are not stupid; they won't let any monsters without any control or leader kill them. And if those do show up, Yakumo will kill them himself. He tells Three-Eyed-Pai to think of what would happen if someone controlled her or hypnotized her or even worse, used her to make them a Wu? Wouldn't that suck?
Three-Eyed-Pai concedes that a Wu can imprison her in the Seima Stone and that controlling a horde of monsters is a dangerous thing but...she doesn't know how to take the Wu thing off of Yakumo and he's her only Wu and he's the only one who can make her feel at ease. He asks her if there was a way to remove the Wu curse from him, what would she do? She walks out, saying that she'll consider it.
She walks out and Yakumo shatters a nearby mug on the floor out of sheer masculine wrath. He knows there's someone pulling her strings, knowing there's no way Three-Eyed-Pai could become leader without support from the darkness. Before he could do more angry thinking, Ling-Ling wakes up in a sweat, telling him not to trust Huang...
Back in the sealy basement, Huang says that she'll be able to move the monster if Three-Eyed-Pai gives her energy but TEP is a bit more reluctant, openly questioning if controlling the monster will really get the respect of the creatures of darkness. Huang assures her, reminding her that she's helped her for years without asking for anything in return. The monster is a Quan and it feeds on human souls; only Three-Eyed-Pai can tame it. Convinced, Three-Eyed Pai gets ready, telling Huang to get the sake because she's upset.
Huang gets the sake, ready to seal the deal with Three-Eyed-Pai (as a disreputable one does when bringing a woman alcohol) but Yakumo stops her, his palm facing outward. She tells him to not joke like that but he pulls out a paper, asking why a woman with her name and her face died ten years ago. He knows she wasn't at the office that night...so what is going on? Huang shoop-da-woops at him instead, petrifying his arm and confirming his suspicions. Then Leopard Mask Man shows up behind him, telling him that basically every problem Yakumo and Pai have ever had has been Huang's fault. He (his name's Kinkara) reveals that Pai has Yakumo's soul inside her...and Huang's plan is to get the Quan to devour it.
Obviously, that will kill him. But Huang says it's too late now because Three-Eyed-Pai is already in the clutches of the creature...
End of chapter.

Tohru Inaba has always dreamed of living a co-ed life. That’s why, when he finally managed to transfer into the renowned Rintoku Academy, he immediately fell head over heels for two Sakuras!
Nanako Sakura’s classes are strict, but at home, she turns into an overbearing mother.
Sakura Kirishima may seem cold and unfriendly, but she is always ready to lend a helping hand as the class representative.
These two girls are outwardly indifferent to Tohru, but put the three of them together and sparks begin to fly.
In the sakura-colored season of spring, two fussy Sakuras have been caught in a light-hearted love triangle.
The Internet Friend vs. The Childhood Friend
"You know how romance games always give the main character that best friend who tells him about the girls? I want to be that guy."
Naoki Fuse, the self-proclaimed best friend, is always ready to tease Tohru about his situation with the two Sakuras.
But, unbeknownst to him, he is one side of yet another light-hearted love triangle.
Akira Nitta has been Naoki's friend since before they could read and write, and is now finally living under the same (dorm) roof as him.
Kurumi Tachibana used to be Naoki's MMO raiding partner, but they were separated before she ever got a chance to meet him in real life or tell him how she felt.
"I understand him better than anyone else."
Akira and Kurumi have Naoki stumped for the first time in his life. And so, Tohru finally gets a chance to see things from the other side.
The curtains rise on this desolate showdown for love.
Cast:
Nanako Sakura Voiced by: Izumi Maki
(Known roles: Chihiro Shindou from ef - a fairy tale of the two., Chizuru Tachibana from the Grisaia series, Komaru Kamikita from Little Busters!, etc.)
The kind dorm mother of the Tsukimi Athletics Dorm who wakes the students up every morning. She cheerfully makes breakfast every morning just for Tohru Inaba, but not out of special consideration for him. Rather, it’s because the other two residents, Naoki and Akira, usually skip breakfast. Coincidentally, one of her concerns is that those two have been skipping their practices as well.
She acts as a parent to Tohru, supporting, encouraging, and scolding him as he works to become an official member of the Fine Arts Club. At school, Nanako transforms into a strict and imposing homeroom teacher, with a firm line drawn between the two roles.
However, since witnessing Tohru being fussed over by Sakura, the vice president of the Fine Arts Club, her mood at the dorm has been noticeably worse.
Nanako specializes in general housework, honed from her time living alone, and cooking simmered dishes such as nikujaga, curry, and hot pot. Her hobby is gardening, and she devotes her spare time to protecting her garden by weeding the dorm's backyard. She goes on walks in the middle of the night to count the stars whenever she is upset, something she has been doing ever since she was a little girl. Because of her youthful appearance, she is often treated like a child, unbecoming of her status as a teacher. Lately, she has been spending more and more time looking up at the sky from the dorm's backyard.
Sakura Kirishima Voiced by: Yukari Aoyama
(Known roles: Bunwa Kaku from the Shin Koihime † Musou series, Kazuki Kazami from the Grisaia series, Orgel Seira from Chaos;Head, etc.)
The class representative and cool beauty in the next seat over. When the other Fine Arts Club members protested Tohru's entry into the club, all it took was for Sakura to say, “I will take responsibility,” to convert them into unanimously approving.
At Rintoku Academy, which is already renowned for its art programs, the Fine Arts Club stands above the rest. And Sakura is the only person capable of wrangling the prideful members of the Fine Arts Club into working, to the point that 3 club advisors have lost confidence and quit in the past year. Despite only being the vice president of the club, her words’ influence rival that of the teachers, and she is not taken lightly by anyone.
That is the reason why, when Tohru naturally lines his up desk with Sakura’s to share textbooks or when he invites her to eat lunch together, their classmates get restless. However, as Sakura is the only person who can get the problem children of the Tsukimi dorm to fall into line, she is also the only one capable of being their class representative. Her natural leadership dwarfs Nanako’s, who is still a novice teacher, causing the latter to often feel discouraged.
Sakura dislikes people who are spineless, waste words, or can't keep promises, those of whom greatly outnumber the people she likes. Despite Tohru being all of these, she becomes his guardian when it comes to club activities, looking out for him. But what her clubmates understand least of all is why she gets so fired up when it comes to the Tsukimi Dorm Mother, Nanako. The two often collide in a rivalry over teaching Tohru about the academy's customs.
Akira Nitta Voiced by: Yuka Kanematsu
(Known roles: Hiyori Oofusa from Dracu-riot!, Moukaku from the Shin Koihime † Musou series, Shamsiel Shaharl from the Funbag Fantasy series, etc.)
The real-life childhood friend who finds the idea of an Internet childhood friend ridiculous. Akira dreamed about marrying Naoki when she was a little girl, earnestly devoting herself to him and spoiling him... and then doing a complete 180 when she realized he had turned into a sloth because of her. Her current number 1 wish is to erase those years of puppy-love devotion from her memory.
Just as Naoki managed to enroll in Rintoku through the kendo program, Akira enrolled through its gymnastics program and thus also lives in Tsukimi dorm. For reasons unknown, she no longer attends practice and instead skips to play baseball and table tennis with Naoki. Whenever he asks her why she keeps skipping with him, she simply replies, "Why don’t you ask the leotard?"
To Akira, Kurumi does not even register as a rival. However, when Kurumi drags Naoki into conversations about Internet games and dating sims, she becomes determined to steer him away, beginning another hopeless battle for his affection.
Akira follows a strict day-to-day diet and is afraid of body weight scales. She often says, "I wish my stomach would stay closer to my back." She is also obsessed with household appliances and has spent the last six months steadily saving to buy a ‘cute refrigerator’. Her favorite food is popsicles and her dream is to have a refrigerator stocked year-round with perfect rows of sparkling popsicles.
Kurumi Tachibana Voiced by: Yui Sakakibara
(Known roles: Ayase Kishimoto from Chaos;Head, Hamaji Yakumo from H20: Footprints in the Sand, Navi from Dragonar Academy, etc.)
The Internet childhood friend who refuses to lose to a real-life childhood friend. Six years ago, hallo made huge waves among hardcore gamers as one of the first big MMORPGs. Kurumi and Naoki met there and formed a party, shedding blood, sweat, and tears together for more than two years. However, right before they could clear the final dungeon, the game ceased operations and the two were suddenly forced apart. Kurumi had planned to confess to him and ask for his contact information once they cleared it, but it seemed her first love was not to be.
All she knew was that Naoki lived in the same region as her. Kurumi was a shut-in at the time, but she took that day as an opportunity to change. She learned how to be fashionable, took up more club activities, started studying, and became an outgoing person. She had no intention of letting her first love end the way it did.
Two years Naoki's junior, Kurumi was recognized as a genius for the sensitivity portrayed in her art and rose to the top of the Rintoku Academy affiliate school she attended, allowing her to take part in the Rintoku Academy Fine Arts Club’s activities. Through Tohru, she recognized Naoki as the person she had been looking for and, consequently, has started picking fights with Naoki's real-life childhood friend, Akira. However, she gets nervous and loses her ability to speak in front of Naoki, resorting to extremely formal language. When she played hallo with him, she lacked the courage to confess outright and instead kept wandering around the entrance to the final dungeon.

A Treasured Fiction
Once again, I’ve decided to write some level 4 Yukari. The mood struck me, I suppose. You’ll find it below the cut.
Nestled deep inside the wafer-thin layers between what is and what cannot be, sitting within the invisible folds of the Hakurei Barrier, at the centre of everything, Yukari Yakumo was deep in conversation.
Anyone else would say she was alone.
Yukari has never lacked for imagination, and this, she often remarked, was what mattered most in her position. People would smile awkwardly, or try to laugh, never quite knowing if she was joking or not, never knowing just what was expected of them. It was a talent that rewarded her often, in this place.
On a better day, she might say, a little fancifully, that she was telling a story. Now? Now it felt banal enough to dress it up a little less. This was something between ordinary lying, and feeding scraps to a wild animal. She looked around, and saw nothing except the oversized glowing symbols of the Hakurei barrier, invisible to most. Of course, there was nothing to see, so instead she felt her company in this place. Forces that demanded to be answered, things that were not alive or dead or people at all: They simply were.
And they were troublesome, too, but gullible and simple. For that, she was grateful.
'And what then?' She heard one of the presences ask her. Her audience was causality, inevitability, continuity, history, probability, reality. She used to wonder how much of that was metaphorical, how much of it real and literal. She was younger, then. She was simpler, too. She realised, now, that in Gensokyo of all places, the question was perfectly irrelevant.
'And what then?' The question turned a little more insistent. Continuity was always the most impatient. The others circled like vultures, waiting for a mistake to seize on, but this one reminded her of a hungry, yapping dog, begging for scraps. Or a pigeon she had seen once, that jumped up and pecked at her when she refused to feed it. She couldn't blame it for that, though. That was in its nature: 'What next?' Without an answer to that, what would any of them b?
She took care, always, not to get ahead of herself. She refused to dictate the future, to tell Gensokyo what it should be in a minute or an hour or a day from now. It was not her place. It could be, but that was a throne she would happily fight to keep herself off. So instead, she always lagged a little behind, talking in yesterdays and 'just earlier's. Only where she no longer had any chance of interfering. It snapped up every last scrap, and she had to take care to keep it from biting off her hand as well. It will want more tomorrow. It always does. Eventually, it curled up and fell asleep, content, just for a little while.
The others? The others were more discerning. They asked probing questions, and not often. Some days they were quiet, gathering material, mulling over their thoughts, if they even had thoughts. To this day, Yukari could not think of them as anything other than a particularly cunning sort of mindless force, or an animal at best. They roamed Gensokyo for inconsistencies and impossibilities. They scoured the outside world too, for anything that might disprove her world, or else wear away at its foundations, and they never rested. Not out of malice, not out of cruelty, but out of an ingrained sense that this world of hers was somehow wrong, that it should not exist.
But if a thing is not real, if it is only a teetering, stacked pile of lie upon fable upon legend, then why should that give it any less right to exist?
How can this be? How can she explain this? Surely, this is not right? They came at her with insistent questions, pointed accusingly at her Gensokyo, at so many pieces of it, and demanded answers. Always, she had them. She lied expertly, carefully, meticulously. The lies - the stories, when she feels more artful - wrapped around each other in complex, tightly woven threads, drawn into endlessly spreading spiderwebs. Sheer detail lent them credibility, and that bought another day. She had to be careful, of course. Careful not to let her lies trip over each other and cancel out, revealing themselves for what they were. Not to let each day's lie harm an old one she's grown fond of. It would be a shame if she were to accidentally overwrite one of Gensokyo's inhabitants, or expose one of its rolling hills or bubbling streams as a fabrication. More than once, she brought a copy of the Gensokyo Chronicles to help her keep all the details straight. Such a terribly complicated place, Gensokyo.
She had to be careful, too, to believe it herself. Conviction was all-important. Without it, she could not sway her attentive, vicious, brutish audience with the lies it needs. Without those lies, it could not believe Gensokyo. She had dreamed of it many a night, woken up in a cold sweat and eyes that had seen the end of it all. The day when this beautiful tapestry of a story finally came unraveled, after a single clumsy misstep. And yet, even this process, this audience where she buys more sand for Gensokyo's hourglass... even that could turn mundane and banal. She had to marvel at it.
One by one, the things hounding her in that strange space started to back away. Their questions had been answered, the impossible made at least plausible, and for now, they are satisfied. They will be back for more, hunting for evidence. They had to, after all. Gensokyo was an itch in their hide, a nagging presence in their thoughts, if they have any. A little gadfly, stinging and biting at reality, just enough to irritate it. But it was important, too much so to consider losing.
With a little smile on her lips, Yukari stepped out, if not into reality, then into comfortingly familiar fiction. One step, two, and she fell onto the balcony of the Hakurei shrine with a sigh, exasperated with her own body. Reimu was out, and already, Yukari could tell she would be found asleep on the porch, curled up on the old wood under the warm sunlight. She didn't bother to fight it.
Like every other time, she was so terribly tired.

i think yakumo does sweat? i'm not sure either actually, i swear he sweats in some of the H scenes but i can't be 100%. regardless eiden is gonna get him one of those huge water bottles with measurements on the side but instead of numbers it's affirmations like "you got this!" "be mindful in the kitchen!" "we love you and want you to stay hydrated!" "take a sip for you AND a sip for the slit!" "keep it gushy!"
*rummages thru my boxes of unlabelled snake facts* but .. snakes can't thermoregulate like that...? but the yokai... *tosses a book over my head* i mean. didn't eiden have horny goggles on one time watching yakumo do farmwork? so sweat had to exist for that time-slowed-down-drip-in-the-sunlight effect, right?? *rips open a box of cue cards* WHAT IF THE SWEAT WAS JUST A FABRICATION FROM EIDEN'S HORNY BRAIN. ALL OUR MEMORIES ARE FABRICATED
ahem.
eiden starts referring to the water measurements in short form after a while on a particularly toasty day when yakumo is expected to cook outdoors for a festival eiden swings by to check up on him says "you better be at slit within 2 hours!! it's hot out today!!" yakumo's "huh? :whuha?" before he eventually gets used to it and just treats it super seriously bc it's a promise he made to mr eiden about self-care muttering to himself "i WILL get to slit within 2 hours"
#anyone else who reads the water bottle will just be like. huh. ok eiden#garu: what's the slit?#yakumo: sdkjaIDDDDW#me whispering to my own thirst for knowledge: please don't make me go thru every one of yakumo's H scenes right now to look for sweat#those things are like 20 minutes each i won't survive a marathon#nu carnival eiden#nu carnival yakumo#feesh answer
