Gyro Zeppeli and the True Man’s World
Chapter 35: True Man’s World (Part 3)
Gyro’s consistent struggle is finding a path for himself outside of his family’s shadow. His father is a constant specter in his life, even an ocean away. The Zeppeli family teachings are undeniably miraculous, yet Gregorio encourages using the spin only when it will be for an undeniably good cause. He doesn’t like uncertainty (that moment when ‘the ball hits the net’) because he feels the Spin is not something for the Zeppeli family (I.e. the spin is not to be used selfishly), but should always be used in service of something greater (e.g. the king, bringing dignity to executions).
Even when first introduced, Gyro is full of contradictions. He’s traditional, yet a trail-blazer. He’s an asshole with a heart of gold. His character arc, really, is about him learning how to be selfish. How to, as Johnny puts it, “hunger”. He needs to want things for himself, to not just be, as Ringo calls him, “a conformist”. That’s why True Man’s World is Gyro’s arc. It’s him really truly embracing the spirit of the cowboy, of individuality, of using what he has ‘inherited’ to find his own path. It’s reconciling these different parts of himself that defines the rest of his character arc.
This journey is also mirrored in Johnny. Johnny states, “That’s what I want to learn from you.” (Chapter 32: Third Stage Goal). Johnny is someone who has ‘inherited’, but he’s also someone who’s lost everything, and hence, knows how to ‘hunger’. Johnny’s position in the third stage is both figuratively and literally caught between Diego (pure hunger) and Gyro (inheritance). Gyro’s growth informs Johnny’s. Gyro’s journey is about growing past what one has inherited to become his own person, just as Johnny states the Steel Ball Run is his own journey to adulthood.
The third stage is mostly an introduction for what we can expect from the rest of Gyro’s arc. Gyro’s arc continues well into the end of the part, as he and Johnny inform one another’s development. I would argue Sugar Mountain is the key turning point in their relationship. Once Gyro realizes how much Johnny is willing to give up for him, he too realizes what he is willing to give up for Johnny.
Johnny bluntly told Gyro in the third stage that the only thing he was lacking was having his own hunger to win. True Man’s World is Gyro shedding his father’s traditionalist views due to the ‘sentimentality’ (care / love) he has for Johnny. The decision to go back for Johnny is the first time Gyro has been able to freely express his own feelings as an individual and sets him on the path to continue exploring that side of himself further into the part.
In Catch the Rainbow, we see him starting to find that ‘golden path’ (a path of his very own) and using what he’s learned he’s able to overtake both Diego and Johnny, because he has found that individualistic ‘hunger’ for victory. Yet his perfect victory is interrupted. But Gyro loses for a reason. In order to gain that ‘perfect victory’ (the golden path), he had to cast aside everything. “Even Johnny disappears.” (Catch the Rainbow (Part 2)). Gyro failed to reconcile the two paths (hunger and inheritance), choosing one over the other, and that is why he didn’t get a perfect victory. But, as previously stated, that’s not what he (or Johnny) needs to learn.
Sugar Mountain is Johnny recognizing that he’s actually not willing to sacrifice everything to satiate his ‘hunger’. Seeing this, something in Gyro also changes. He thinks about ‘the ball that hit the net’; the moment where only ‘luck’ (or, similarly, fate) can decide how things turn out. Gregorio says something along the lines of, ‘Where the ball lands, only god can decide.’ But that’s not entirely true. Johnny had a choice to make: the corpse parts (the thing he wanted most in the world), or Gyro. For Gyro, that was the moment the ball hit the net, and it was a very human decision - one born of ‘sentimentality’ - that led to his life being saved.
This idea is followed up in Wrecking Ball. Here, finally, Gyro is able to reconcile the two sides of himself. He’s quite literally faced with his mirror image in Wekapipo - a man who also knows the spin, but who has lost connection to his homeland and his roots. Gyro remembers another moment the ball hit the net - when he botched a surgery on Wekapipo’s sister. It was a moment of bad luck to Gyro, but one that saved another’s life. Gyro defeats Wekapipo through the reconciliation of his hunger and his inheritance. He’s fully committed to the corpse hunt with Johnny (even willing to give up the race and his original goal, as seen shortly after in Philadelphia (Chapter 72; Ticket to Ride)), yet it is only because of what he learned from his family - the Zeppeli faith in miracles - that he is able to move past Wekapipo as an obstacle to continue the hunt. This reconciliation finally brings to a close the conflict from the third stage, and at last gives Gyro the insight needed to be at peace with himself and his decisions, wherever they may lead.
This, I think, is what gives greater meaning to his final words. There’s Lesson 5, of course, but there’s also his parting words: “If that’s how it is, I’m fine with it.” (Chapter 89: Break My Heart, Break Your Heart (Part 2)) Gyro maintained his morals until the end, refusing to send his ‘bad luck’ somewhere else. He refused to artificially manipulate luck / fate (through Love Train) to decide the outcome of his injury. He, very humanly, accepted his death. Lady Luck had not been at his side. It was because of his relationship with Johnny (the source of his ‘sentimentality’) and all that he learned throughout the race, about himself, and what he really values, that he was at peace with himself in the end. Gyro finally found the path that felt right to him, concluding the arc started in True Man’s World.
Gyro was both an inheritor (the Spin) and an individual who learned to hunger through the pursuit of goals that would improve him as a person - partially because he knew the corpse hunt could help him grow, but also seen in his refusing to back out at the end due to his affection for Johnny. In Lesson 5, his parting words to Johnny, Gyro thanks him for teaching him how to hunger and grow into himself, just as Johnny thanks him for teaching him how to inherit and once again see value and beauty in the world around him.
Sometimes I see takes that say Johnny and Gyro switched protagonist roles halfway through (the arc I would point to being A Silent Way). I would argue that’s not an accurate description. They informed each other’s development throughout the part and even well into the climax. It’s because of Gyro that Johnny too learned how to reconcile inheritance and hunger, allowing him to fight against alt!Diego on his own (the very embodiment of the corruption of ‘hunger’). They taught each other how to ‘hunger nobly’ and find the best of both worlds. They really do have a beautiful relationship and I’m disappointed when I see it mischaracterized.
Ultimately, Gregorio was half-wrong. Sentimentality was the downfall of Gyro Zeppeli, but it was also the cause of his greatest triumph, allowing him to find peace with himself in the end. The art of the spin was passed to Johnny, and everything Gyro embodied lives on through him.
Thank you for reading, I would love to hear your thoughts as well :)

So. This is post-grad life, at least for right now, I guess.
Am I happy? I don’t really know. Am I unhappy? I guess not. I’m not sure I really have enough time to be either one. I’ve been trying to get around to making this post for like two weeks and I’m still not sure.
I’m living on my own in a new city, working full-time at a legit professional theatre in more or less my chosen area, making thirteen whole dollars an hour. I’m busy but not to the point of exhaustion, and I really like everyone I’m working with. I’ve met a cast of cool people and am probably making connections which will be helpful in the future. (Miles has complained about networking on multiple occasions, but he doesn’t have to network anymore and he calls me “pumpkin” so I’m gonna say that’s still a net positive.) I have handwritten thank-you notes from two different Broadway actors in my backpack right now (I mean, they wrote them to everyone in the crew, but still). I’m remembering for the first time in almost a decade how much I love Shakespeare, and specifically performing Shakespeare after digging stupidly nerdily deep into text analysis and Harold Bloom’s fanboy essays and how mock is the sound a tennis ball makes as it hits a racket and--
I’m also staying in a bare room in a just-barely-not-shitty apartment in a vaguely sketchy neighborhood, getting home around midnight every night. I can count on one hand the number of meals I’ve had since I got here that haven’t been either granola bars or frozen microwave dinners. I’m probably developing some kind of nutrient deficiency as I write. Unless I can finagle my way into doing something for Christmas Carol, in a couple of weeks I’ll be unemployed again and THEN WHAT, HUH. It’s probably good that I’m as busy as I am, because being at the theater is literally the only human interaction I have in this entire city -- actually it’s pretty much the only activity I have in this entire city. I don’t know what the fuck to do here for fun. I’m starting to think that nobody in this city does. I asked Reid during tech week for suggestions and he offered “try meth”, “run a Fortune 500 company”, and “go see the fall scenery in Massachusetts”.
I do get to see Mark and Reid, who probably don’t really count as friends but do count as people who I’ve worked with before and really like, so maybe we’re getting there. Mark is a sweetheart, I maybe sort of forgot that over the summer or maybe hanging out with Emily all the time started wearing off on him and he got more obnoxious, but on his own he’s really lovely. Reid is... still Reid, albeit now very tired, so that’s always fun. He probably has good enough object permanence that when he has literally any free time in his day again he might remember to ask me to help out with one of his and Matt’s film projects, so that might be something, although that will probably be... like... January?
I miss Matt a whole lot, or maybe I just miss the idea of Matt. I worry I am or was exploitative of his kindness and his sunshine smile, just in wanting to be around it and him again. He talked to me when he was drunk, but maybe that was just because I was outside his friend group and he had a crush on my boss. I’m not sure how much talking about feelings he does with Reid. I’m not sure how much time Reid has for feelings. (I sort of miss the idea of Tristan too, but that’s... a whole other can of worms which I was never actually sure I wanted to open.)
Mostly I’m just lonely. Nothing new there -- I’m really good at being lonely. I’ve had a whole lot of practice.
This doesn’t really go anywhere, which is part of the reason why I’ve spent two weeks thinking about writing it and not writing it. (The other reason is that -- see above -- I am fucking busy and I get home late all the time.) I think I’ve sort of figured out at this point that too much introspection of this kind is rarely helpful.
Anyway. That’s where I’m at.

To the Skies! (01)
Word Count: 1.9K
Pairing: EXO OT12/Reader (for now)
Notes: volleyball! au, haikyuu! au, highschool! au
Summary: You’re the manager of the boisterous Yonsei High’s volleyball team. After a terrible defeat at last year’s tournament, you guys are determined to win it back this year. Maybe with the help of an old friend of yours…?
A/N: Since this is a volleyball au, there will be some jargon but it won’t really affect the flow of the story if you don’t know them! Also, I try to include the definitions without making it too unnatural in this chapter. I’m no volleyball expert and this is only based on what I know so bear with me!
The sound of worn out shoes squeaking on the wooden floors echo throughout the gym. Every few seconds, you hear a ball bounce on the ground. The open double doors welcome the fresh scent of spring, but is overpowered by the smell of sweat inside the building. The humidity hangs in the air and lingers around you.
You stand outside the court and next to the net, observing the hustling boys. They’re in the middle of a practice match against each other, but their intensity is second to none. Every serve, every spike, and every dig, they pour all their energy into it. The Inter-High Tournament is right around the corner and we were not about to lose again. Our defeat last year was the biggest upset in the sports world. We were favorites, but didn’t even make it to semi-finals. The state of the team was a mess. The same with our reputation, needless to say. But eventually, with the help of Coach Lu and our Captain, the team got back on its feet. Our eyes are set on victory, and victory only.
“Baekhyun!” Sehun eyes the small boy in front of the net as he runs up. Sehun leaps up, way above the net and slams the ball that floats into his palm right on the end line. Amazing. You’ve seen this play millions of times but Baekhyun and Sehun’s quick set is no joke. In the whole league, no one can pull it off but these two. Baek manages to send the ball right into Sehun’s hands as he slams it down, giving the opponents no time to react. Even if they could, Sehun’s sheer strength will knock down them over. He isn’t our team’s Ace for nothing.
“Nice kill!” Chanyeol and Jongdae slap him on the back. Sehun gives a satisfied look to Baek and pumps his fist. On the other side, Yixing and Tao exchange a ‘yikes’ look, as Tao goes to pick up the ball that drilled right between the two of them. Since they’re both first-years, they still aren’t used to Sehun’s power spikes even after a few months.
Speaking of the two newbies, they aren’t too bad themselves. You fumble through your jacket pocket and pull out your pen. You turn flip to the front of your book where the 'player notes’ are and find Yixing and Tao.
Zhang Yixing (#8): Wing Spiker. S: Topspins. All-rounded. Can also set if needed. Very agile but moves with instinct. More doing, less thinking.
Huang Zitao (#9): Middle Blocker. S: Jump Serves. Better defense than offense. Can receive hard spikes. Exceptional at blocking. High athletic abilities.
You jot down some more notes as the game progresses. It’s your job to make sure they integrate well with the rest of the team. So far, there’s no problem, as they all get along and have similar play styles.
You’ve been the team’s manager since your first year here at Yonsei High. The Coach knew about you in middle school and raced to recruit you. You were the manager of your middle school volleyball team, that made it into the papers as well. Your observation skills and game knowledge are well known. You’ve proved to be an important asset to the team.
“Amazing save!” Tao gawks at Kyungsoo, who just bumped Sehun’s insane spike right to Minseok, our third-year setter.
“As expected of our libero,” the team captain Junmyeon chimes in with pride besides you. He’s right. Kyungsoo is one of the best liberos you’ve ever seen, if not the best. He can even return Sehun’s offensive plays. Kyungsoo’s footwork is top-notch and on top of that, his game sense is incredible. He thinks two or three steps ahead and is always composed during matches. He is indeed the ‘guardian deity’ of our team. His saves are almost godly.
“Alright! Match point!” The score is 24-21, with Sehun, Baekhyun, Jongdae, and Chanyeol on the winning team. Minseok, Tao, Kyungsoo, and Yixing all have determined looks on their faces. They weren’t going down without a fight.
It’s Sehun’s serve. He stands far behind the serving line and takes a deep breath. He does his serving ritual: bounce the ball three times with both hands, spins it in his palms, and throws it up high towards the line. Right after, he follows up and dashes after the ball, eyes fixed. With a quick swing of his arms, the ball goes flying towards the other side, zooming right past everyone and onto the right corner of the court. It’s in.
His teammates all crowd around him and cheer.
“You cheeky brat!” Jongdae says, hitting him in the arm.
“Always have to show off, don’t you?” Chanyeol sneers. They all joke around but they’re all glad they won. I mean, it would be embarrassing to lose against two first-years. Not that they were bad, but you know.
Oh wait. You quickly turn to Sehun’s page and scribble down ‘improved control of his jump serves. now fast and accurate’. Sehun always had a nasty serve, and we all knew it. But of course that came with a cost. It’s not that easy to control such a powerful serve. So it’s a double-edged sword. When it would be in, however, let’s just say they’re pretty impossible to receive. Statistically wise, you would say that now, it works 75% of the time. You finish up the notes for the rest of the team. This notebook is pretty much your bible. Statistics, probabilities, analysis, match-ups, you have it all.
Coach Lu blows his whistle to end the game, and gathers the whole team around.
“You all worked hard,” he starts. “But not good enough. Do you guys think we’ll even get past the first round in this shape?” his voice is harsh, but sincere. Lu looks at every single player with intensity and they’re all silent. You review the match in your head and can’t help but agree. Though there were good plays, there were also many times the team was a mess. Miscommunication, spikes that could have been blocked, sets that were off, and so many botched receives. Our team is good, undoubtedly. We have so much individual talent. But there’s just something missing.
“We need to work on our unity. As you saw in the practice, we won’t even come close to the top tier teams in the city,” Junmyeon adds.
“Basically. Get your shit together. You all want to win right?” Coach Lu declares with a strong voice.
“Yes, Coach!!” echos through the gym, and you see their eyes light up with a new flame. The meeting continues as everyone discusses their merits and faults, and conjuring ways to improve the state of the team. You listen intently, calculating all the factors in your head. Then at the end, as always, you share your insight with them, which is usually followed by “ooo's” and “aahh's”. You find it especially cute because they would pay such close attention and absorb everything they heard to a T.
This time, they give you a look of enlightenment and tackle you with endless hugs.
“Y/N, you’re the best!”
“You always know what to say!”
“You’re so right!! I’ll go work on it right away!”
After the shower of compliments, they rush back onto the court and start practicing right away. You can’t help but smile at how hard they always work and how much they appreciate you.
“Thanks again, Y/N,” Sehun says as he places his hand on your head. He has his signature smile, and his hair damp from the game.
“Get off, your hand is heavy,” you make a face as you push his hand away. Honestly you just wanted to keep yourself from blushing. You may or may not have the tiniest crush on Sehun since last year… Seriously though, it was almost impossible not to. Considering that fact that a) he’s super tall and handsome and buff, b) he’s amazingly good at volleyball, c) you spend 70% of your day with him, and d) how he has the cutest laugh in this entire universe. You snap out of it and usher him towards the courts.
“Go practice! You may be the ace but you can’t slack off, okay?” you try to sound tough but it obviously didn’t work since he just laughs at you.
“Okay, okay. Whatever our cute little manager says~” he says playfully before joining Kyungsoo with peppering. You blush at the word ‘cute’ and curse yourself for being so soft. You see Coach Lu and Advisor Fan on the sidelines with knowing grins on their faces. You give them a wry look before heading into the office to organize the charts.
You lean back into the soft cushion of the spinny chair and let out a sigh of relief. It’s been a rough day for sure. The stress has been piling up from the approach of the tournament and it’s not going to get any better for you or the rest of the team as well. After a few moments of serenity, you prop yourself up on the chair and start tidying up the mess on the table. Coach Lu and Advisor Fan aren’t the most ordered people… Well that’s why you’re there. You gather all the loose papers and one catches your eye.
Isn’t this a club application…? You flip the paper back and forth before reading the contents. It’s fairly new so it can’t be one of the member’s form. That’s odd. It’s almost halfway into the school year. You push your thoughts aside and review the application. Hmm… Another wing spiker… he’s played since 4th grade? Not too shabby… Specialties are spikes and jump serves… Just like Sehun… Wait, he qualified for nationals in his middle school? What the- this would be an amazing asset to our team… You get so excited and instantly run all the scenarios through your head. With this, your team’s spot at championships will almost be set in stone.
You take the paper and practically fly out of the office doors.
“Coach! We have a newcomer?” you shout at the two men sitting at the benches. Coach Lu widens his eyes and gapes.
“Oh shit, I forgot to tell everyone. I was so caught up…” he starts mumbling to himself again.
“This is great! He’ll be an excellent addition to the team!”
“Yeah, I thought so too, that’s why I made an exception so he can join the team. It seems that he’s a transfer student this late in the year…” our club advisor Fan adds.
“I’ll assure you, he’s an amazing player… I’ve seen his skills with my own eyes,” Coach Lu reminisces, and looks over at Sehun, who’s jumping all over the court. “Ho… he might even be better than our Sehunnie.”
A complete look of shock takes over your face. Better than Sehun? The Coach says so? “Just who is this person…?” you ask out loud. The two of them raise their eyebrows at you and tilt their heads to the side.
“Y/N… he was on your team,” Advisor Wu says, unamused. Huh?
“Did you forget already?” he gives you a look of disbelief. “There’s no way. I watched your team play three whole years ago and the image of him flying in the air and smacking down that ball right past the other’s team libero never leaves my mind. He’s one of the best I’ve seen,” Coach Lu nods twice to himself with closed eyes.
You stand there dumbfounded with the paper hanging between your fingers. There’s only one person that it could be. You lift the paper slowly into your line of vision.
Applicant Name: Kim Jongin
No. Fucking. Way.
A/N: Thanks for reading! I think this chapter is a bit more volleyball focused…?I’m not sure how I should write this (in terms of less vball and more plot? or this amount is ok?). If you guys have any feedback, please let me know! ^^

Min Detail 15 Can and Moreno on the FK just outside the box. Can takes and shoots right at the keeper who punches it back into the sea of players. Ojo with an easy chance. Can't connect and it's save into the hands of the keeper. 17 Can with some good pressing to force Plymouth into a mistake. He sets up Woodburn, who does well to create a chance. 21 IT'S A GOAL ... NOT! Origi is onside as a cross is whipped into the box. He wins it and scores, but only for it to be called a foul. Dagnabbit!! 25 Tonight, Messi is practicing some of those quick feet moves Woodburn just showed 28 Stewart channels his inner Lucas, so of course the distant shot goes wide 29 What a lovely run by TAA on the wing. Can with a lovely ball, TAA makes up a lot of ground to deliver the ball into the box. Keeper gets a hand to it first 33 Moreno whips in a FK. Cleared. -- Shit I forgot we have a goalkeeper playing too 34 Ojo fools his marker and gets a shot in which deflects for a corner. Corner leads to another corner. Which leads to a FK like straight in front of the goal 35 FK shot right into the wall and that's about it. 37 Moreno's corner right into the keepers hands. -- Anyone up for a Sturridge for Karius substitution in the second half? -- Mildly interesting stat: LFC have 84% possession and 255 passes compared to 24 for Plymouth. 39 Another corner for Liverpool. Plymouth are playing like I play Clash Royale - Keep defending and hope that somehow the random Goblin Barrel I throw will do something ... hopefully. 39 Anyways that corner was cleared. -- IDK why Can is mad. Maybe the guy has a kink for ear wax and armpit smell. HT Finally.

KARIUS SIGHTING LADS! And it's cleared. 50 Plymouth looking like a football team this half. They are trying things. 51 Plymouth fans are singing "we are just too good for you". :))))) 54 BLOODY TIT. Can Ojo just bang one in please. Another headed shot goes flying away. 55 Stewart gives another FK away. Plymouth twitter are calling it the "Carey Range". If it means that this is the range in which Carey shoots right at the keeper, then yes it's a good name. Karius MOTM today tbh. -- Oh Lord now we have Stewart AND Lucas attempting the same shots 59 LFC players seem to be getting frustrated. Giving away lots of fouls. Sturridge coming on soon 63 LFC SUB STURRIDGE on for EMRE CAN 64 Sturridge with instant impact. His shot drags just wide off the goal. Klopp with a heavy sigh. 65 PAFC SUB TANNER on for GARITA 66 PAFC sub also tries to make an instant impact. Tanner with a good run. It's finally blocked 68 Ojo with a nice run on the wing, but he can't really get to Sturridge's through ball. 69 AA YA YA! Sturridge is onside when the cross comes in. It's too close to the keeper and he smothers the ball. -- Some lovely twitter punditry analysis for you: "80% possession won't mean anything if we can't win the game." oh really you sure hmm? 71 LFC win a FK. Moreno on the ball. I feel like you already know what happens after. (nothing, incase you don't know) -- **Did you know?" That Woodburn was 11 when Lucas last scored a goal. Bet you did though. Everyone knows it's been that long. 74 LFC SUB LALLANA AND FIRMINO on for WOODBURN AND EJARIA 75 PFC SUB SMITH on for MILLER -- Guys ... we are probably gonna have to watch an extra 5-7 minutes of this game. 78 Stewart to the rescue. Tanner is free and only has Stewart to beat. But he doesn't let Tanner past him with a last ditch challenge. phew 81 Firmino cuts inside, outside, inside and crosses into Sturridge. Heads over the bar. 82 Lallana does a few fancy turns and whips a cross in for Origi. He stretches to get to the ball. It heads wide and Origi appeals for a foul which is turned down. 84 STURRIDGE HITS THE SIDE NETTING AFTER CUTTING IT IN. Didn't even give the keeper the time to hoot. 85 Plymouth with a break. The shot cuts dangerously close to the goal. Back in normal territory now. 86 FK to Plymouth. After some back and forth heading between the two teams Karius finally gets a hold on it. Back in Plymouth half. -- This match is the equivalent of dementors. -- Its a 5 hour ride from Liverpool to Plymouth. To concede or not to concede? -- 6 MINUTES ADDED ON. 92 Moreno on a corner kick. Blargh. 93 Ojo gets pushed down at the side of the box. Saved again.
