Minnesota Twins-Houston Astros Series Preview
8.5.21-Griffin Jax RHP (1-1) 6.41 ERA Vs. Framber Valdez LHP (7-2) 3.01 ERA
8.6.21-Bailey Ober RHP (1-1) 4.94 ERA Vs. Zack Greinke RHP (10-3) 3.65 ERA
8.7.21-Michael Pineda RHP (4-6) 3.89 ERA Vs. Luis Garcia RHP (7-6) 3.49 ERA
8.8.21-Kenta Maeda RHP (4-4) 4.65 ERA Vs. Lance McCullers RHP (9-3) 3.02 ERA
The Twins At A Glance- The Minnesota Twins are in the middle of their longest and toughest road trip of the season. Their last stop is the hardest one with four games in Houston against a good Astros team. The Twins split a pair of games against the Reds and are (2-3) on the trip. Luis Arraez hit 5-for-8 in the two-game series and is now hitting .310 on the season. Jorge Polanco had three more hits against the Reds and is hitting .366 in the second half. Josh Donaldson has been pinch-hitting, but still hasn’t started a game since July 27th. He has been testing the hamstring, but the Twins have been very cautious with him. The Twins claimed right-hander Ralph Garza from the Astros in an interesting move. Garza features a four-seam and two-seam fastball with a curveball, and a cutter mostly. He can hit 93-94 with his four-seamer. I haven’t seen much of him, but I like his stuff. He has options and the Twins sent him to St. Paul for now. Almost every arm in the Twins bullpen is a late inning option. Alex Colome picked up the save on Tuesday night. John Gant can be used in any role. Tyler Duffey was already a high leverage guy, but Danny Coulombe and Caleb Thielbar will get looks for late-inning options.
The Astros At A Glance- The Houston Astros just gone done with an emotional series at Dodger Stadium. They were constantly booed and Jose Altuve and Carlos Correa saw the majority of the hate. The Astros still split a pair with the Dodgers and finished the road trip (4-4) with stops in Seattle, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. Michael Brantley is having a great season with a .332 average, which is the best in baseball. Yuli Gurriel isn’t far behind him with a .324 average, which is third in MLB. Jose Altuve is having a great year after a bad 2020 season. He has twenty-five homers and sixty-five RBI’s. Yordan Alvarez has twenty homers and Kyle Tucker has twenty-one bombs as the Astros can swing the bat. The Astros tried to improve their bullpen at the trade deadline. They acquired Phil Maton from the Indians, Yimi Garcia from the Marlins, Kendal Graveman and Rafael Montero from the Mariners. Alex Bregman is on a rehab assignment and should be back soon. The Astros have been great at developing pitchers despite losing guys like Gerrit Cole to free agency and Justin Verlander to Tommy John surgery. Zack Greinke is having a good year. Lance McCullers has been solid along with guys like Framber Valdez, Luis Garcia, and Jose Urquidy. Ryan Pressly leads the Astros bullpen with eighteen saves and a 2.05 ERA. The reinforcements should make the end of the games easier for Dusty Baker.
What To Watch For- The Astros took two of three games at Target Field back in June. The Twins were last in Houston in April of 2019. They lost two of three games at Minute Maid Park back then. Framber Valdez is (2-0) with a 1.62 ERA in five games against the Twins. Who could forget him shutting down the Twins in Game 1 of the American League Wild-Card series last year. Andrelton Simmons has two career homers off Valdez. Bailey Ober allowed two runs over five innings in his lone start versus the Astros in June. Zack Greinke is (5-9) with a 4.64 ERA in twenty-four games against the Twins. Michael Pineda is (3-5) with a 5.18 ERA in ten starts against Houston. Carlos Correa has taken Pineda deep three times in his career. Luis Garcia gave up four runs over 4 1/3 innings against the Twins in June. Kenta Maeda allowed five runs over 5 1/3 innings in his only start against the Astros in 2018. Lance McCullers has a 6.48 ERA in three stats versus the Twins in his career. This should be an interesting series for both teams. The Twins played well and split four games from a very good White Sox team a few weeks ago. The Astros are coming off an emotional series and playing against a mediocre Twins team.

Catch Me If You Can (8/?)
298 days. That’s how long Killian Jones was away from a baseball field. It’s less than a year, only part of a season for him, but it might as well have lasted a decade as he alternated between physical therapy and spending an excessive amount of time sitting on his couch.
But then he came back and won the World Series.
It’s something no one saw coming, and it’s certainly not something anyone who knows about his arm would predict. Now it’s a new season with new possibilities, and anything could happen. On-field reporter Emma Swan will be there to cover it all even if she is not his biggest fan right now.
Asking her out live on-air will do that.

A/n: Have I ever mentioned how undeniably awesome that you guys are? Like, I absolutely cannot believe that there are people out there who keep reading these words that I’m slamming out. This story, I think, is probably my most planned out MC, and I’m too excited for you guys to get to see what’s going to happen!
Thank you to @resident-of-storybrooke for being my beta, even if she did tell me that she was only doing it so that she didn’t have to wait for updates 💞

“How’s Roland?” Killian asks Robin as he tosses a ball in his direction, the two of them beginning their early morning workouts to loosen up their arms. It’s chilly this morning, the sea breeze wafting over to the field, but he’s not going to complain when this is his kind of weather.
Perfect.
Everyone should always have a bit of sea in the air they’re breathing even if the salt water gives him flashbacks to the accident if he closes his eyes for too long. Luckily, it’s usually not like that whenever they’re in San Francisco, the city too different than the beach town in Florida where the accident happened. And he’s got baseball to focus on, not memories of the past that he can already see in scars on his arm and feel in the pain in his shoulder.
“He’s currently mad at me for not letting him miss school to come out here with us.”
“Just get him a bobblehead. Kids love that. Addy and Lucy collect them now.”
Robin throws a ball at Killian, and it thwacks into his glove a little harder than he was expecting. Damn Locksley. “Roland only likes the Yankees. He gets pissed if anyone even mentions another team. I had to have a conference with his teacher about it because there were issues with other kids.”
Killian shouldn’t laugh, but he does, his shaking shoulders affecting his throw as he backs up to put some more space between he and Robin. “I mean, the kid is right. How could anyone ever love another team?”
“If you ever have kids, I’m going to make them Sox fans simply to torture you,” Robin teases. “Maybe even Dodgers fans.”
“That’ll never happen. Addy and Lucy wouldn’t let you.”
“I think I can overpower the two of them.”
Another toss, this one not as powerful as he was intending. “You’d be surprised. Roland could have flown out for the weekend, you know. I’m always happy to watch him on the days I’m not playing.”
“Carol hates flights. She wouldn’t fly out here with him, and we’re not about to let my six-year-old fly across the country unaccompanied.”
Killian nods his head as Robin throws the ball back, a soft thud landing in his glove. He and Robin have known each other for a decade now, and while Rob is probably his closest friend outside of Liam, he doesn’t share too much about his personal life since Marian died. He gets it. It was a tragedy, and Robin feels guilt over it since Marian’s car accident happened when she was on the way to pick him up from the airport when they’d been on the road for two weeks. Killian will never forget walking through JFK, simply happy to be home, and watching his best friend’s entire life crumple before him.
It was devastating, and Robin simply doesn’t talk about it. The only real reference to any of it is when Robin complains about Carol, Marian’s mom. They’ve got an unofficial custody agreement going on for when Robin has to travel for work, and Carol is always attempting to make Robin feel guilty for leaving Roland. It’s a shitty thing for her to do when there’s nothing Robin cares about more than his son, and Killian’s blood boils at the thought of it.
Parents are allowed to have lives and identities outside of their children. That doesn’t mean they don’t love their kids.
He’s not a parent, not even close, but maybe he’s a little sensitive to the thought because of Milah.
Milah.
It’s been…he doesn’t actually know when it is that he last thought of Milah. Wait, no, scratch that. It was after he kissed Emma. He’d been reeling after that, his body and his mind, and after Emma had walked away and told him that couldn’t happen again, his mind ran a marathon trying to piece together just how exhilarating it felt to actually feel something for someone for the first time in nearly four years.
He’d met Milah in a bar. He hadn’t wanted to go out that night, but Will had insisted. The season was over, they were pretty much free of all of the grueling work for at least a month, and they were going to celebrate. She’d been sitting at the bar, long, beautiful brunette curls falling down her back and a bright smile on her face, and he’d been intimately smitten. They’d talked all night, really hit it off, and it all felt natural from there. She was someone who he could tell, for probably the first time, that had no interest in the fact that he was a professional athlete. It was refreshing.
And he fell in love.
But she was married. By the time he found out, by the time that she told him, he was so deeply in love that he didn’t care. He was twenty-three, and he’d found the woman he was going to be with for the rest of his days, consequences be damned.
A year later, though, when he thought that things between them were good, when he’d grown used to the thought, she ended things between them and told him that she had a son. She wanted to go back to her husband, wanted them to be a complete family, and her time being free from her marriage and motherhood was over. It’s all a bit of a blur, that conversation, but he remembers begging her to stay, promising that he would help her take care of her son, that he would be there for the two of them always.
It’s not what she wanted.
He can’t blame her. She had a life outside of him, a life before him, and if she didn’t want to stay, he wouldn’t keep asking her to. So he didn’t.
Killian was too devastated to say anything, to try to fight for his love. She’d lied to him about so much, and he guesses a part of him knew that and knew that he couldn’t fight for someone who was never fully in the relationship the way that he was.
What he did do was start going back out to bars and clubs, drinking too much to numb the feeling and sleeping with too many women to try to get that feeling back. He was lost, desperate, and utterly heartbroken. No part of him cared about the reputation he was making for himself until Liam dragged him off of his bedroom floor and told him that he had to get his shit together before he lost the game too.
That scared him shitless.
There was no way that he could lose everything. Not like that. He needed his job. He needed the game. It was everything to him, and Killian knows that his desperation to cling to baseball after Milah is what made nearly losing it all after the accident so damn heartbreaking.
He’s been such a fuck up.
So why the hell would he ever have a shot with Emma now when she is leagues above him?
“Where’d your head go, Jones?” Robin yells across the field, and Killian realizes they’ve both backed up several feet without him knowing it. He knows that sometimes he can zone out on the field, but damn. This is something else. “You got all glassy-eyed for a minute.”
“Was my arm at least doing the right thing?”
“Eh, it could have been better.”
Killian rolls his eyes as he adjusts his grip on the ball before throwing it, letting it curve right into Robin’s glove. “You know, if you want to bring Roland out on one of our away series, there are plenty of people who would be willing to watch him. He wouldn’t be alone for a second. I can’t reiterate that enough.”
“I’ll think about it, but he’ll be with us for most of the summer anyways. So I think he’ll be alright. You about done for the day?”
“Two more.”
“Got it.”
They end up staying out there for at least ten more pitches between the two of them, each of them wanting a little more work, before walking back across the field to head inside and shower. Neither of them are playing today, but they still got here early enough for practice so that they’d have a bit of the afternoon free before they took stats for this afternoon’s game.
There’s something infinitely peaceful about an empty stadium, no crowds in their seats and only the sound of a bat cracking against a baseball or a ball thwacking into a glove. It’s what helps him get lost in his thoughts, and as he walks past the mound, he starts looking around into the seats and sees one lone person sitting several rows up.
Emma.
He’d recognize her anywhere in her jeans and red leather jacket, blonde waves falling over her shoulders as she looks to be writing in a notebook. He hasn’t seen her since they were in LA three days ago. He thought they were having a good conversation, a good night, up on the rooftop of the hotel, but then something flashed in her eyes, some kind of realization that made her need to leave.
Or want to leave.
No part of him understands her and yet he feels like he does. It’s comfortable talking to her, even outside of work. Maybe especially outside of work. And he finds that his stomach swoops and something unfamiliar gets caught in his throat whenever he’s around her. She makes him feel all of the things he hasn’t felt since Milah, and he doesn’t have a lot of clues as to what’s going on inside of her head. This could all be some kind of pipe dream, a relationship that’s not going to happen, but he has to be fine with that.
Whatever they become, if anything, is as much up to her as it is to him.
“You coming?” Robin asks him, and his head snaps toward his friend before looking back up at Emma.
“I’ll be there in a few minutes, okay?”
Rob clicks his tongue. “Just…don’t get in over your head, okay?”
It’s far too late for that kind of advice, but he nods his head anyways before walking over to the small barrier that keeps fans from getting onto the field, hoisting himself up over it, and then climbing over a few seats to try to get to where Emma is sitting. Al, Smee, and Archie would absolutely kill him if they knew he was unnecessarily climbing over things, but what they don’t know won’t hurt them.
Just him.
He’s two rows in front of Emma when he finally speaks. “You know, Swan, for someone who keeps running away from me, we sure do end up in all of the same places.”
She jumps, her ass literally moving away from the seat, and he chuckles a bit to himself as she pops her headphones out of her ears and looks down at him, green eyes flickering over him. She’s most likely thinking about how much of an asshole he is, but he does have a bit of unfinished business with her, the sweatshirt thief.
“It’s my job, twenty-nine.”
God, he loves when she calls him by his number. It’s got to be some kind of weird primal thing, but he’s going to try not to second guess it.
“Your job requires you to be at the stadium six hours early?”
She shrugs and writes something else down in her notebook. “I like the view.”
“Aw, love, you could have simply asked to see my ass in baseball pants if you wanted.” Emma rolls her eyes, but he can see the slightest smile forming on her lips that has him nodding his head to the seat next to her. “May I?”
“Yeah.”
Quickly, he climbs over two sets of seats until he’s sliding into the seat next to her, propping his feet up on the back of the chair in front of him so that his slightly muddy cleats are propped up next to Emma’s heeled boots, the water at the other side of the stadium in the background. It’d make a nice picture, something he’s sure is floating around out there, but he thinks he’d rather take in the view of it for now.
“I like the view too,” he admits, twisting his head to the side to look at Emma and the way that freckles scatter over her nose and how she bites on her bottom lip while she’s writing what seems to be some kind of notes for work. He’d rather like to bite that bottom lip as well. Nope. He cannot be thinking that. “It’s peaceful out here when no one else is around, when there’s no music playing or fans screaming. It really…it makes you realize how amazing having a job like this is.”
“It’s the dream, right?”
“Absolutely.” He nudges her shoulder into hers, the warmth of her skin somehow making it through her jacket. She kicks his foot in response. “So, I know you’re usually around most of the day, but when we travel, do you ever get to go around and explore the city? I always wish I had some more time to do that.”
Emma closes her notebook then, sticking her pen in the spiral and placing it on the ground beneath them before adjusting herself in her seat enough that her hand brushes against his, chill bumps rising on his skin. “I’m usually my own producer when on the road. Sometimes Ruby comes with me, but that’s rarer now. So I feel like I’m always doing something, especially because my stat keepers never get me reports in a timely manner. But yeah, sometimes I’ll get up early and wander around the city near the hotel. I very rarely get to do all of the tourist stuff, though. I don’t have the time.”
“It’s the first thing I did when I got called up out of the minors,” he admits, messing with his chain and pulling it to rest over his t-shirt. “I had never been on a plane before college. Hell, I’d never been out of Ohio and Kentucky, and in college we didn’t get a lot of freedom to explore. My coach was a hard ass.”
“Al’s not?”
“Only when we’re losing,” he chuckles, glancing over to see Emma smile. “But I pretty much hit every single cliché site that I could as soon as I had the money. I have far too many cheap keychains.”
“You did not.”
“I did.”
“Do you also own an ‘I heart New York’ t-shirt?”
“Well, no, but I had to go buy a new jacket in LAX because someone stole my favorite sweatshirt.”
Blush rises on her cheeks, coloring her pale skin, and she reaches up to tuck her hair behind her ear. Maybe he’s warming up to her today. She didn’t seem too happy to see him at first, and he obviously doesn’t know what boundaries are when it comes to her. “It’s a really comfortable sweatshirt. I think I’m going to keep it forever.”
He snorts at that and reaches up to stretch his arms behind his head, resting his neck in the cradle of his palms. “You know, love, I am a very charming man.”
“So you think.”
“So I know,” he corrects, kicking at her foot. “And as a charming man, I tend to make friends very easily, friends who can help me get into your hotel room so that I can get my sweatshirt back.”
“I think that’s called stealing. And possibly stalking.”
“I’m pretty sure that’s what you did with my sweatshirt.”
“That was offered.”
“I don’t think so,” he chuckles.
“Semantics.”
“That is not semantics, love.”
“It totally is,” she laughs, the sound echoing over the empty stadium as Eric and August start running laps around the field. “What time is your flight tonight?”
“Now look who’s stalking.”
“Shut up, Jones.” Infinitely charmed by her. Seriously. “I have the eleven o’clock to JFK as long as the game isn’t monstrously long. If you’re in the airport at the same time, I can give it back to you tonight. If not, I’ll see you back at home.”
“Funnily enough,” he sighs, letting his arm fall over the back of her chair so that his fingers brush over her shoulder and her hair, “I have the same flight with those same conditions since we apparently couldn’t get our charter plane for tonight. Thank goodness or I don’t know what I’d do without my sweatshirt. I obviously can’t travel without it.”
“You’re weird,” she huffs, twisting in her seat so that they’re facing each other, noses less than half a foot apart so that he can smell the mint on her breath. “Everyone thinks that the great Killian Jones is all suave and smooth, but you’re a little dorky.”
He winks. “It’s all part of the charm.”
Emma’s lips press into a soft pink smile, and his mind flashes back to the kiss and how it felt to have those lips moving over his, how it felt to have her body pressed into his. It was exhilarating, made him literally lose his breath, and he aches to do it again. He could do it again if he leaned forward right now.
But he won’t.
“Emma.”
She blinks several times, her eyelashes brushing against her cheeks. “What?”
“Are we going to talk about the fact that we kissed?”
And there it is. There’s the elephant in the room. There’s the elephant in the whole damn stadium.
“I can’t.”
“You can’t talk about it?”
“I can’t do it again.”
“I didn’t – ”
She backs up from him without moving from her seat, and he feels his rapidly beating heart drop to his stomach.
Oh.
“I know that there’s a…thing between us,” she continues, her eyes looking everywhere but at him. “I’m not dumb. I’ve dated before. I know how it all starts, and I know that I do have…something for you, but I can’t date you, Killian. I just can’t.”
What a way to get his hopes up and crush them all in one sentence.
He reaches up to scratch behind his ear. “Because of your job, right?” he prods, the answer seemingly falling into his lap. “God, Swan, I’m sorry. I’m – I’m a fucking idiot, okay? It doesn’t matter how much I know that I’m screwing up with you, I just keep doing it. I’m sorry.”
“It’s not…” Emma sighs, something loud and unfortunate and that’s really more of a groan before she leans forward and buries her face in her hands. “I’m really shitty at talking to people, so I’m just going to pretend that you’re not here, okay? Like the grown adult woman that I am.”
“Whatever works, love.”
“I really love my job,” she mumbles into her hands. “Like, I love it. I may not be like you getting to live some childhood fantasy come to life, but I love what I do. I’ve lucked into a lot of things, but I’ve also worked hard for it. People have shit on me about it for so long. People I know. People I don’t. And it’s just – I mean, you know about so much stuff that’s happened after you asked me out. You know how much harassment I’ve gotten, so if I’m seen spending time with you or kissing you, I’m going to get so much shit. I’m going to have every single person question my integrity, my ethics, my ability to do my job. And then what? If we break up, I just know that’s all anyone is going to care about as I work with the team and try to do my job. I want to, Killian. I do. I just don’t think that I can. Dating people I work with is a not so great idea.”
That is the most he’s ever heard Emma Swan talk at one time, and he’s still catching up trying to take in everything that she just said and figure out how exactly it is he wants to respond to it.
Mostly, he wants to punch every single person who has ever made her feel shame about what she does for a living, but he imagines that’s the wrong answer.
“I’m sorry,” he finally replies, knowing that it’s not enough. “I’m…I still hate myself for putting you in the position that I did. I respect the hell out of you, Swan, and anyone who doesn’t is a fucking asshole who doesn’t deserve your time. I would never ask you to do something you didn’t want to or something that makes you uncomfortable. I should have…I’ll keep my distance.”
He gulps down the emotion in his throat, taking a deep breath to try to regulate his heartbeat, and stands from his seat, climbing down to the row in front of Emma so that he can get up and walk away. He still needs to take a shower, and this is obviously not a conversation that either one of them want to be having.
“You don’t,” she starts, leaning back in her chair and moving her hands away so that she can her face and the lightness of her eyes. “You don’t have to do that. I like you, Killian. I am obviously a crazy person for admitting that out loud, but I do. I mean, hell, I kissed you. I just…I don’t know what to do about any of it because I can’t take the chance that I’m wrong about you and mess my career up for someone I don’t know super well.”
The most idiotic idea he’s ever starts to form in his mind, and he’s sure Emma is going to laugh him out of the stadium if he says it. She has to. There’s no other possible reaction to it.
“I know how to keep my life private now, love,” he starts, his fingers working furiously at a spot on his chin. “It’s something I learned after I – well, after I was a little more publicized. And if you’re willing, maybe we could test the waters between us but not tell anyone? I don’t have to tell my family or my mates. You don’t have to tell your friends. The public doesn’t have to know. It’ll just be until we know if we’re working out.”
Emma throws her head back and laughs, something light and joyful and maybe a little deranged, and it’s the exact reaction he was expecting.
The exact.
“Are we a romantic comedy now? Secret dating?”
“I like to think I’m both romantic and comedic, so possibly.”
She wipes her fingers underneath her eyes, a bright smile on her face. Okay, so that wasn’t really what he was expecting. Maybe a little more anger. “You’re serious?” she questions.
“I mean, I know it sounds kind of ridiculous, but if we both want this, why not at least give it a shot?”
“You’re crazy.”
“That’s not the first time that I’ve heard that.”
“So what? Do we go on a date? In one of our apartments? I have roommates.”
“I don’t. And technically I told you I wouldn’t ask you out again, and I don’t want to break that promise.”
Emma rolls her eyes, happiness still painted across her face, and he swears that his heart may as well be glowing like he really is in some kind of romantic comedy. How did he ever forget the feeling of having someone return his affections? It’s been too damn long.
“Are you serious? You’ll propose dating without anyone knowing, but you won’t ask me out on a date?”
“It’d be bad form to go back on my promise.”
“Sometimes I think you’re meant to be a British man from several centuries ago with the way you talk”
“That’s…interesting. Not going to question it, though. So, Swan,” he encourages, placing his hands on the back of the seat in front of him and leaning into her space, “do you want to ask me something?”
Emma chews on her bottom lip, her eyes glancing around him before finally looking at him so that all he can see is green, green, green.
“Fine,” she huffs, crossing her arms like he’s putting her out like this. “Do you want to go on a date with me?”
“Eh. A man likes to be courted, and I’m just not sure how good you’ll be at that.”
“I will hurt you.”
“I’m kidding,” he laughs, stepping up onto the chair in front of him until he’s back on level with Emma, reaching forward to grab her hand and pull her up out of her seat so that they’re nearly eye level. “Of course I will go on a date with you. Just, come here.”
“Come where?”
He tilts his head to the side before threading his fingers through hers and walking to his right, stepping over discarded beer bottles and hot dog wrappers that haven’t been cleaned up yet, until he’s got he and Emma hidden behind a support pole, none of the players on the field able to see the two of them.
Emma’s chest is visibly heaving, her lips parted and cheeks flushed, and he reaches up with his free hand to tuck her loose hair behind her ear, fingertips brushing skin in a way that lights him up and causes a shiver to run down the length of his spine.
This isn’t real. There’s no way it can be.
“Killian,” she whispers as he leans in a little closer, his forehead resting against hers and their noses brushing together. He’s still holding her hand. Why is that what he’s focusing on? “Why did you just tug me away from my seat and make me hide behind this gigantic pole?”
“Because I’m going to kiss you.”
“Are you?”
“I was planning on it.”
“I kind of like this plan. I mean, I – ”
He doesn’t let her finish talking, dipping his head down and surging forward to press his mouth into hers and finally feel the softness of her lips against him. Emma gasps, and he can tell that she wants to keep talking, but then she’s parting her lips a little so that he can swipe his tongue against the seam. Killian can feel her pressed into every part of him, can feel those hard lines and soft curves, and his hand snakes into her hair to help guide the kiss all the while her free hand holds onto his t-shirt. It’s slower, softer than their first kiss. A need to keep going, to keep deepening, is there, but he takes it slow as he never wants this to end.
This is damn well near perfect.
Most definitely the best end to a practice that he’s ever had. Honestly, he’d be more likely to show up on time if this was guaranteed.
Emma nips at his bottom lip before soothing it with her tongue, and a growl comes from the back of his throat before he’s pulling back and opening his eyes as his nose brushes against Emma’s. He’d like to keep doing that.
“I feel kind of crazy right now.”
“I feel kind of crazy at all times.”
“Well, that dos fit your personality type.”
He leans in to quickly brush his mouth over Emma’s simply because he can. “That’s the kind of swoon worthy thing I’m looking for as you court me.”
“Again, you’re a man from another century.”
“But I’ve obviously retained my youthful glow.” There’s a crack of a ball against a bat behind them, and he turns to see that the Eric is now practicing with Roseman. It brings reality back to him for a minute, and he sighs, pulling back from Emma a little more as his thumb runs over her knuckles. “We should probably both get back to work.”
“Probably.”
“Are you freaking out right now?”
“No,” she says, the lie obvious on her lips. All he has to do is raise his brow for her to crack. “Okay, yeah, a lot. I feel like this is going to blow up in our faces.”
“Aye, I know.” He brings their hands up to his lips and presses a kiss on the back of her hand. “Just…Emma, can you trust me?”
“I want to.”
“Give me a shot, and if you decide against it, that’s it. We don’t have to try this anymore, and I give you full permission to slander my name in the public eye.”
“That’s a lot of power you’re giving me there.”
“I’m a dumb man.”
Her eyes scrunch up with her smile, her nose too, and it feels damn good to get that out of her. “I’ll see you at the airport tonight, right?”
“Absolutely.”
-/-
The lights are already dimmed in the plane cabin when he slides into the seat next to Emma, jostling her as she looks away from the movie, she’s watching to look at him, surprise evident in her features.
“What the hell, twenty-nine?” she whispers, trying not to wake anyone up. “You are most definitely not the little old woman who was my seatmate.”
“Louise is now happily sitting in first class.”
“Are you serious? How did you do that?”
“Darling, I don’t know about you, but most people don’t turn down free seat upgrades when they get the chance. Besides, I told you I’m charming and make friends all over.”
“You’re weird is what you are,” she laughs, adjusting her blanket over her lap and offering him some of it so that he covers his legs as well. Emma Swan brings her own blankets with her when she travels. Noted. “You wouldn’t happen to be able to talk yourself into getting another one of those cookies from a flight attendant, would you?”
His lips curl up on the side. “I could, but that would require me flirting with another woman.”
“I mean, you already undoubtedly flirted with Louise.”
He snickers, having to turn to the side to bury his mouth in his shoulder to quiet it so no one around them notices. Everyone is asleep or tuned into their movie, and he takes comfort in that.
“Tell you what, Swan. I’ll get you a cookie if you finally give me my sweatshirt back.”
“Oh, so you noticed that, did you?”
“You’re literally wearing it right now.”
“It’s comfortable.”
“We’ve had this conversation before.”
“I know.” Emma shuffles again, seemingly uncomfortable in her seat, but then he feels the warmth of her hand wrapping around his, and she’s twining together their fingers before placing them in her lap under the blanket. “I really was going to give it back when we were waiting by our gate, but I figured it was too obvious in front of the whole damn team.”
“This is true. We’ve got to work on this discreet thing.”
“Trading seats with little old ladies to sit next to me probably doesn’t help.”
“I think it’s worth it.”
“You’re cheesy.”
“I’m a man of many facets.”
“So I’m learning,” she yawns, closing her eyes for a minute. “I’ll give you the sweatshirt back before we land. I promise. You want to watch this movie with me?”
“I think that sounds like a good plan.”

2019 Top Ten Fantasy Baseball Draft – Show Me the Money Edition
This is a year that my fellow leagues and I took a different approach and started analyzing roto-style along with head-to-head formats for fantasy baseball this year. We also took into consideration the players that had huge incentives from their season last year, so the favoritism’s are to the players that received an award or had a big payday over the offseason. A lot of these names are superior in their position in players, and it is not a coincidence that some of these players are going to be drafted in the selection of the top ten averaging at the exact draft position. Let’s see if your draft ends up the same way this season.
1. Mike Trout (Los Angeles Angels) Outfield – No matter how many times you start over or join a new league, Mike Trout is number one pick in EVERY single fantasy baseball draft BECAUSE he is the GREATEST baseball player alive. Trout capitalizes his 2019 campaign with a brand new contract estimated at $430 million over the next twelve years; if that payday does not tell you that he is the best player in baseball, and then let the numbers talk for you. Trout hit 39 home runs, had a .312 batting average, and crossed home plate over 100 times doing it for the sixth time in his career. Trout is on pace to have the highest career WAR in the WAR-stat baseball era, and we hope we never see him take a tumble in the greatness he has yet to achieve.
2. Mookie Betts (Boston Red Sox) Outfield – The franchise torch officially was passed down from David Ortiz to Mookie Betts. His campaign in 2018 was a huge step up from the year prior bringing a World Series championship to Boston along with an American League MVP. Betts is a necessary draft. It is not a rare circumstance to see him go before Trout in most draft formats. Realistically, he has a more complete team built around him compared to Trout. Betts led the league in runs (129), batting average (.346), and slugging percentage (.640) which gave him full merits for his MVP title. Expect the same great expectations for Betts as he defends both titles for the 2019 season.
3. Max Scherzer (Washington Nationals) Pitcher- Scherzer is the only man on this list that does not have an incentive from a big payday or an award for the 2018 season. However, do not let that dismiss the fact that he is the wealthiest pitcher in the game still being paid by the Washington Nationals. Scherzer led the league in strikeouts with 300 and in innings pitch with 220 in his losing bid for a Cy Young to Jacob deGrom; which was snapped after winning it two season in a row. Scherzer this season will go against more difficult hitting in his division with all stars like Robinson Cano to the Mets or J. T. Realmuto to the Phillies, even more interesting that he will face his old teammate, Bryce Harper. Strategically, he is a great long-term pick to have and building a team around great pitching starts with the best pitcher in the game.
4. Christian Yelich (Milwaukee Brewers) Outfield – Enter the National League’s current reigning MVP champion. Christian Yelich took advantage of the heated competition in his first year of his new division after being traded from the Miami Marlins, and he is just getting started in Milwaukee. After rallying the Brew Crew to stealing the division from the Cubs in Game 163, Yelich displayed a fantastic resume of production after finally sealing his right as an All Star. He led the National League in batting average with .326, slugging with .598, and a perfect on base percentage with 1-flat. Yelich is comparable to Mookie Betts and where he is in his position; he has all the right pieces around him that makes him a better player, and even more effective as a leader on and off the field. An alumnus of the United States’ first WBC Championship team, he looks to also bring the Brewers first World Series title to the franchise; that makes him a true champion.
5. Chris Sale (Boston Red Sox) Pitcher – Chris Sale just earned a huge payday with an extension with the Boston Red Sox for five more years at $145 million to keep him as the ace of that rotation. He also recorded the last out the 2018 World Series and earned his first championship and is aiming to earn more if he is looking to stay in Boston until 2025. The only issue is that lingering injuries kept Sale from finishing the season strong and cost him another chance of winning a Cy Young award. In his age 30 season, perhaps we might see some minor regression from what Sale does on a regular basis for the 2019 campaign. Hopefully he has enough in the tank to actually grab that Cy Young he has had his eyes on for some time now.
6. Nolan Arenado (Colorado Rockies) Third Base – The Rockies have chosen the face of their franchise with Nolan Arenado. Right after Manny Machado was given his grand payday, Arenado was extended thru 2025 with a $260 million contract. The four time All-Star and Silver Slugger has finished close to the top five in the MVP races over the past three seasons in the National League. Full of youth and power, Arenado is seizing the ranks of becoming the best third baseman in the game. In his four All-Star resume building years, he has collected over 100 RBIs, leading the league in his 2015 and 2016 seasons. He has everything you need to build a quality team around him, do not sleep on this pick if he falls into your lap.
7. Bryce Harper (Philadelphia Phillies) Outfield – Welcome back to my top ten drafting list for fantasy baseball, Bryce Harper. May I also welcome you to the “City of Brotherly Love” as you prepare to lead a team that will be ready to win big in the near future. The young phenom is coming off one of his best career years since his MVP winning season in 2015. Harper leaves the Washington Nationals after collecting 100 RBIs, 137 hits, and 34 home runs, not to mention winning the Home Run derby in his former park last season during the All-Star break. With a fresh new league talent and a supporting cast of seasoned veterans on the Philadelphia Phillies, Harper has his eyes set on his next goal: World Series. After all, getting paid $330 million for thirteen years will give you all the ambition in the world to do so.
8. Blake Snell (Tampa Bay Rays) Pitcher – A new face that has all the right stuff to be competing with names that have graced this list before. The 2018 AL Cy Young winner displayed an insane year with a Tampa Bay Rays that were robbed short of competing in the playoffs last season. Snell led his league with a 1.89 ERA and complimented that with 211 strikeouts. He also led the entire majors with 21 wins in 31 starts out of all pitchers. Snell’s well-deserved Cy Young also gained him a payday of $50 million over the next five years until 2023. A tough notch pitcher that took everyone by surprise last season will be more than willing to display the same stuff this season in a more than competitive American League East. We will be keeping a watchful eye on Snell over these next few years to see if his stuff will give him even a bigger contract down the road, maybe even with a more prestigious ball club.
9. Manny Machado (San Diego Padres) Third Base/Shortstop – The other All-Star following Harper that was expected to have a big pay day. Manny Machado felt a more comfortable presence in the National League West and signed a huge long term contract with the San Diego Padres valued at $300 million over the next ten years. Following his performance with the Los Angeles Dodgers and their deep run into the playoffs, Machado decided not to stay on an over crowded and talented Dodgers with a team that is on the rise of being competitive in the short time coming. Machado will serve along side a former World Series winner Eric Hosmer and the Padres number one prospect, Fernando Tatis Jr. Tatis’ position is at shortstop, so it is in expectation that Machado will be playing more games at third base. With the utility asset at two positions, Machado will be ringing in a new era with the San Diego Padres.
10. Jacob deGrom (New York Mets) Pitcher - This is reaching, but you cannot pass on the 2019 Cy Young winner Jacob deGrom after the season he had last year. In 32 appearances for the New York Mets, deGrom had the lowest ERA in the Majors last year leading all pitchers with 1.70. He also got paid before the season began with an extension with the Mets worth $137.5 million over the next five years. In the past, I have had his team mate in the rotation, Noah Syndergaard on this list some years before, however injury has riddled this rotation over the past few seasons . Still, deGrom has made his way back into being a commanding leader of this pitching staff and team. The Mets have made some interesting moves for a supporting cast to help deGrom gain more wins than he did last season. Expect another dominating year from deGrom and the New York Mets.

Lou Brock
Louis Clark Brock (born June 18, 1939) is an American former professional baseball player. He began his 19-year Major League Baseball (MLB) career playing in 1961 for the Chicago Cubs, and spent the majority of his career playing as a left fielder for the St. Louis Cardinals. He was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1985 and the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame in 2014. He is currently a special instructor coach for the St. Louis Cardinals.
Brock was best known for breaking Ty Cobb's all-time major league stolen base record in 1977. He was an All-Star for six seasons and a National League (NL) stolen base leader for eight seasons. He led the NL in doubles and triples in 1968. He also led the NL in singles in 1972, and was the runner-up for the NL Most Valuable Player Award in 1974.
Early life
Brock was born in El Dorado, Arkansas, to a family of sharecroppers. His family moved to Collinston, Louisiana, when he was two years old. While his family didn't have much money, he said that he never felt poor because, "If you don't have something, you don't miss it." Brock grew up as a fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers, the team that included Jackie Robinson, Don Newcombe and Roy Campanella. Although he didn't play in organized baseball until he reached the 11th grade, he learned much about the sport from listening to Cardinals radio broadcaster Harry Caray describe the way major league hitters stood at the plate. After attending high school in Mer Rouge, Louisiana, he received academic assistance to attend Southern University in Baton Rouge, but when a low grade in his first semester meant the possibility of losing his scholarship, he decided to try out for the school's baseball team in order to secure an athletic scholarship.
Baseball career
College and the minor leagues
Brock hit for a .189 batting average in his first year of college baseball, but improved the following year to hit for a .500 average. Southern University won the NAIA baseball championship during his junior year, and Brock was selected for the United States baseball team in the 1959 Pan American Games. When Brock decided to try for a professional baseball career, he traveled to St. Louis to try out for the Cardinals, but the scout who had recommended him was in Seattle to sign Ray Washburn. He then decided to try out for the Chicago Cubs, who signed him as an amateur free agent in 1960. Assigned to play for the St. Cloud Rox, Brock won the 1961 Northern League batting championship with a .361 batting average. It would be his only season in minor league baseball as the Cubs decided to promote him to the major leagues.
Chicago Cubs
Brock made his major league debut with the Cubs on September 10, 1961, at the age of 22. In his rookie season of 1962, Brock became one of four players to hit a home run into the center-field bleachers at the old Polo Grounds in New York since its 1923 reconstruction. His blast came against Al Jackson in the first game of a June 17 doubleheader against the New York Mets and was one of two that would clear the wall in consecutive days, with Hank Aaron's coming the very next day. Joe Adcock was the first to hit a ball over that wall, in 1953. Babe Ruth reached the old bleachers (a comparable distance) before the reconstruction. Brock was not known as a power hitter, but he did display significant power from time to time.
Brock was blessed with great speed and baserunning instincts, but the young right fielder failed to impress the Cubs management, hitting for only a combined .260 average over his first two seasons. In 1964 after losing patience with his development, the Cubs gave up on Brock and made him part of a trade with the St. Louis Cardinals. The June 15 deadline deal for pitcher Ernie Broglio saw Brock, Jack Spring, and Paul Toth head to St. Louis for Broglio, Bobby Shantz, and Doug Clemens. Cardinals general manager Bing Devine specifically sought Brock at the insistence of Cardinals' manager Johnny Keane to increase team speed and solidify the Cardinals' lineup, which was struggling after the retirement of left fielder Stan Musial in 1963. At the time, many thought the deal was a heist for the Cubs. Broglio had led the National League in wins four years earlier, and had won 18 games the season before the trade.
St. Louis Cardinals
After Brock was traded to the Cardinals, his career turned around significantly. He moved to left field and batted .348 and stole 38 bases for the remainder of the 1964 season. At the time of the trade, the Cardinals were 28–31, in eighth place in the National League, trailing even the Cubs, who were 27–27 and in sixth place. Brock helped the Cardinals storm from behind to capture the National League pennant on the last day of the season. Four months to the day after Brock's trade, the Cardinals would win the 1964 World Series in seven games over the favored New York Yankees, who were appearing in their fourteenth World Series in sixteen years (and their last until a dozen years later). Brock's contributions to the Cardinals' championship season were recognized when he finished in tenth place in voting for the 1964 National League Most Valuable Player Award. Meanwhile, Broglio won only seven games for the Chicago Cubs before retiring from baseball after the 1966 season. To this day, the trade of Brock for Broglio is considered one of the most lopsided deals in baseball history.
In 1966, Brock ended Maury Wills' six-year reign as the National League's stolen base champion with 74 steals. In David Halberstam's book, October 1964, the author states that manager Johnny Keane asked Brock to forgo hitting home runs in favor of the stealing bases. Brock went on to lead the National League in stolen bases eight times within a nine-year span between 1966 and 1974 (former teammate Bobby Tolan led the league in steals in 1970). Brock began the 1967 season by hitting 5 home runs in the first four games of the season, becoming the first player to do so (Barry Bonds would tie this record in 2002). He was hitting for a .328 average by mid-June to earn the role as the starting left fielder for the National League in the 1967 All-Star Game. After suffering through a mid-season slump, he recovered to finish the season with a career-high 206 hits and a .299 batting average while leading the league in stolen bases and runs scored as the Cardinals won the National League pennant by ten and a half games. Brock became the first player to steal 50 bases and hit 20 home runs in the same season. In the 1967 World Series, Brock hit for a .414 average, scored 8 runs and set a World Series record with seven stolen bases as the Cardinals defeated the Boston Red Sox in seven games.
The Cardinals won the National League pennant for a second consecutive year in 1968 as Brock once again led the league in stolen bases as well as in doubles and triples. In the 1968 World Series against the Detroit Tigers, Brock had three stolen bases in Game 3 and contributed a double, triple, home run and four runs batted in during Game 4 to help the Cardinals build a three-game to one advantage over the Tigers. The Cardinals appeared to be on the verge of winning a second consecutive World Series, going into the fifth inning of Game 5 with a 3–2 lead. Although Brock's base running abilities had proven to be a factor in the previous four games, his carelessness may have cost the Cardinals a run. After Brock had hit a double, he tried to score standing up on Julián Javier's single to left, but Willie Horton threw him out with a strong throw to home plate. Detroit rallied for three runs in the seventh inning as Mickey Lolich shut out the Cardinals for the final eight innings to win the game for the Tigers. In Game 7, Brock had another crucial miscue when he was picked off base by Lolich, extinguishing a possible Cardinals rally. The Tigers rallied from being down three games to one behind the excellent pitching of Mickey Lolich to win the series. Brock once again stole seven bases and was the leading hitter in the series, posting a .464 batting average with 6 runs and 5 runs batted in.
At the end of the 1960s, Brock's career was entering its prime. Beginning in 1969, he produced six consecutive seasons with 190 hits or better. He was named NL Player of the Month for the first of three times in his career in May 1971 with a .405 batting average and 8 stolen bases. In August 1973, he broke a record set by Ty Cobb when he stole his 50th base of the season, marking the ninth time he had stolen 50 or more bases in a season. Brock won his second NL Player of the Month Award in August 1974, with 29 stolen bases in 30 games, despite batting only .326; also, he was the first batter to be named Player of the Month without hitting a home run in the month of his award.
On September 10, 1974, Brock stole two bases, tying Maury Wills' mark of 104 with a first inning steal of second base and then capturing sole possession of the single season record with another swipe of second in the seventh inning. He ended the season with a new major league single-season record of 118 stolen bases. Brock finished second to Steve Garvey in the balloting for the 1974 National League Most Valuable Player Award.
In a game against the San Diego Padres on August 29, 1977 at Jack Murphy Stadium in San Diego, Brock became the all-time major league stolen base leader when he broke Ty Cobb's career record of 892 stolen bases. The record had been one of the most durable in baseball history and like Babe Ruth's record of 714 career home runs, had been considered unbreakable by some observers.
Brock remained best known for base-stealing and starting Cardinals rallies. He was said to have disdained Maury Wills' method of base-stealing, instead shortening his leads and going hard. He was also an early student of game films. He used an 8 mm movie camera from the dugout to film opposing pitchers and study their windups and pickoff moves to detect weaknesses he could exploit.
Brock fell into a hitting slump early in the 1978 season and lost the left fielder's job. However, he fought back during spring training in 1979 with a .345 batting average to regain his starting job. Brock was named Player of the Month for the month of May 1979, during which he produced a .433 batting average.
On August 13, 1979, Brock became the fourteenth player in Major League Baseball history to reach the 3,000 hits plateau against the team that traded him, the Chicago Cubs. Approximately one month later, Carl Yastrzemski reached the same plateau and was promptly invited to the White House by Massachusetts Congressman Tip O'Neill. Brock was reported to have felt slighted that he hadn't received a similar invitation. Brock originally stated that he wouldn't go to the White House even if he was invited. However, after consideration he decided that forgiveness was the best course and accepted a belated invitation to meet with the President. Brock retired at the end of the season, having posted a .304 batting average in his last season at the age of 40. At the end of the season, he was named the National League Comeback Player of the Year—the first player to be so named in his final Major League season.
Career statistics
In a nineteen-year major league career, Brock played in 2,616 games, accumulating 3,023 hits in 10,332 at bats for a .293 career batting average along with 149 home runs, 900 runs batted in, 1,610 runs scored, and a .343 on-base percentage. A six-time All-Star, Brock hit over .300 eight times during his career. He ended his career with a .959 career fielding percentage.
Brock held the single-season stolen base record with 118 until it was broken by Rickey Henderson in 1982. He also held the major league record for career stolen bases with 938 until it was also broken by Henderson in 1991. He led the National League in stolen bases for a record eight times and also had a record twelve consecutive seasons with 50 or more stolen bases. Brock is still the National League's leader in career stolen bases.
Brock's .391 World Series batting average is the highest for anyone who played over 20 series games. His 14 stolen bases in World Series play are also a series record. Brock's 13 hits in the 1968 World Series tied a single-series record previously made by Bobby Richardson in 1964 against his Cardinals' team, and later tied in 1986 by Marty Barrett.
In a unique (if incidental) accomplishment, Brock was the first player ever to bat in a major league regular season game in Canada. Leading off against Montreal Expo pitcher Larry Jaster (a Cardinal teammate of Brock's just the year before, who had been acquired by the Expos in that offseason's expansion draft) in the Cardinals' April 14, 1969 game at Jarry Park, he lined out to second baseman Gary Sutherland.
Awards, honors and life after baseball
Brock received numerous awards during his playing career. In January 1968 he was named the recipient of the Babe Ruth Award as the outstanding player in the 1967 World Series. Brock was honored with The Sporting News Player of the Year Award in 1974. In the wake of his record setting 118 stolen bases during the 1974 season, Brock was named the winner of the Roberto Clemente Award in March 1975, for best exemplifying the game of baseball both on and off the field. In 1977 he was awarded the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award as the player who best exemplified Lou Gehrig's ability and character. In 1978, the National League announced that its annual stolen base leader would receive the Lou Brock Award, making Brock the first active player to have an award named after him.
In October 1979, Brock was named the National League's Comeback Player of the Year. In December 1979, he was named as the recipient of the Hutch Award, given to the player who best exemplifies the fighting spirit and competitive desire of Fred Hutchinson. Also in 1979, the St. Louis Cardinals retired Brock's jersey number 20, an honor that had previously been bestowed upon only three other Cardinals players; Stan Musial, Dizzy Dean and Bob Gibson. In 1983 he was inducted into the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. In 2014, the Cardinals announced Brock among 22 former players and personnel to be inducted into the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame Museum for the inaugural class of 2014.
Brock was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1985, his first year of eligibility. He was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 1992. Brock was inducted into the St. Louis Walk of Fame in May 1994 and, in 1995 he was inducted into the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame. In 1999, he was ranked Number 58 on The Sporting News' list of the 100 Greatest Baseball Players, and was nominated as a finalist for the Major League Baseball All-Century Team.
After retiring from baseball, Brock prospered as a businessman, especially as a florist in the St. Louis, Missouri area. He briefly worked as a color analyst for Monday Night Baseball on ABC in 1980, and for Chicago White Sox telecasts the following year. Brock still regularly appears at Cardinals games. When he steps onto the field he is always greeted by a loud, low-pitched cheer of "Loooouuuuuuuuuuuu". He also lent his name to a unique rainhat, shaped like a miniature umbrella and to be worn at games during showers in lieu of retreating to the concourse. The product was called the "Brockabrella."
Brock and his wife are both ordained ministers serving at Abundant Life Fellowship Church in St. Louis, and he is a director on the board of YTB International. Brock's speed was referenced in the song Check the Rhime by the pioneering "jazz rap" hip-hop ensemble A Tribe Called Quest. On December 5, 2006 he was recognized for his accomplishments on and off of the field when he received the Bobby Bragan Youth Foundation Lifetime Achievement Award. Brock is the father of former University of Southern California Trojan and National Football League player Lou Brock Jr.
Brock's left leg was amputated below the knee in October 2015 because of an infection related to a diabetic condition.
He announced on April 13, 2017, that was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a blood cancer that starts in the bone marrow's plasma cells.

Diamondbacks rout Padres to end 24-game road skid
New Post has been published on https://tattlepress.com/mlb/diamondbacks-rout-padres-to-end-24-game-road-skid/
Diamondbacks rout Padres to end 24-game road skid
Eduardo Escobar went 4-for-5 with a homer and five RBIs and the Arizona Diamondbacks routed the host San Diego Padres 10-1 on Saturday night to halt the longest road losing streak in major league history at 24 games.
Christian Walker also homered and right-hander Merrill Kelly (4-7) shut out the Padres on five hits over six innings. Walker, Josh Reddick, Josh Rojas, David Peralta and Pavin Smith all had two hits as Arizona racked up 16 overall while winning for just the second time in its past 22 overall contests.
The Diamondbacks also ended San Diego’s eight-game winning streak. Tommy Pham’s RBI single in the ninth prevented the Padres from being blanked.
San Diego’s Jake Cronenworth saw his four-game home run streak end.
Dodgers 3, Cubs 2
Cody Bellinger hit a walk-off solo home run in the ninth inning to lift Los Angeles over visiting Chicago, ripping a 3-1 pitch over the fence in center with two outs in the ninth off Cubs reliever Keegan Thompson (3-2) to give the Dodgers their second straight win in the four-game series.
Dodgers starter Julio Urias struck out a career-high 12 batters in 5 1/3 innings. The left-hander allowed two runs, five hits and walked one, but for the third straight outing could not secure his 10th victory of the season.
Joe Kelly, Garrett Cleavinger, Phil Bickford and David Price (3-0) blanked the Cubs over the final 3 2/3 innings. Cubs right-hander Alec Mills allowed two runs and eight hits in four innings, striking out two and walking two.
Giants 6, Athletics 5 (10 innings)
Curt Casali put a happy ending on his nightmarish game when he doubled home Steven Duggar from first base with one out in the last of the 10th inning, capping a two-run rally that pushed host San Francisco past Oakland.
Down 5-4 after a Matt Chapman sacrifice fly in the top of the inning, the Giants got even on an RBI single by Duggar off Athletics reliever Burch Smith (1-1) that scored Brandon Crawford with one out.
Casali, who had struck out in each of his previous four plate appearances, then lined a double into the left-field corner. San Francisco closer Jake McGee (3-2) was credited with the win despite allowing a run without issuing a hit in the top of the inning. The Giants (50-26) are the first team in the majors to reach 50 victories.
Story continues
Red Sox 4, Yankees 2
Nathan Eovaldi took a shutout into the eighth inning and tossed 7 2/3 innings of one-run ball against his former team as host Boston beat New York to improve to 5-0 this season against their rival after a three-game road sweep of the Yankees on June 4-6 and winning 5-3 in the series opener Friday.
Eovaldi (8-4) allowed seven hits and walked none while striking out six batters. Enrique Hernandez, Bobby Dalbec, Hunter Renfroe and Xander Bogaerts each drove in a run for the Red Sox.
DJ LeMahieu finished 4-for-5 with a solo home run and two RBIs for New York. Yankees starter Jordan Montgomery (3-2) allowed three runs on eight hits with a pair of walks and five strikeouts in six innings. New York has dropped three of its last five games.
Marlins 3, Nationals 2
Rookie Zach Thompson struck out 11 batters — the most by any Miami pitcher since 2019 – in beating visiting Washington.
Nationals leadoff batter Kyle Schwarber, perhaps the hottest hitter in the majors entering the game, went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts and had his six-game hit streak snapped. Schwarber has 22 homers this season, including 13 in his past 15 games and nine in his past seven contests.
Instead of Schwarber, this games hitting star was Miami’s Jon Berti, who went 2-for-3 with the go-ahead homer and a double. Thompson (2-2), who was making just his fourth career start, lasted six innings, allowing four hits, two walks and two runs for his first quality start.
Tigers 3, Astros 1 (Game 1, 7 innings)
Zack Short blasted his first career home run, Casey Mize (5-4) tossed six strong innings and host Detroit snapped Houston’s 11-game winning streak Saturday in the opener of the day-night doubleheader.
Houston’s winning streak was one shy of the franchise record, which it established on three occasions.
Short was called up from Triple-A Toledo earlier in the day to serve as the 27th man on the roster for the doubleheader. In addition to his fifth-inning home run, the 26-year-old shortstop had a double.
Astros 3, Tigers 2 (Game 2, 7 innings)
Yordan Alvarez and Carlos Correa hit back-to-back homers during a three-run sixth and Houston rallied past host Detroit in the nightcap of a day-night doubleheader.
For Alvarez, it was his 13th homer of the season while Correa now has 15 long balls. Jose Altuve reached base twice and scored a run for Houston. Lance McCullers Jr. (5-1) allowed two runs on five hits and struck out seven in 5 1/3 innings. Ryan Pressly struck out the side in the seventh for his 12th save.
Jonathan Schoop and Omar Mazara each had a pair of hits for the Tigers.
Mets 4, Phillies 3
Michael Conforto hit the game-winning sacrifice fly as New York mounted another late-inning comeback to edge visiting Philadelphia a day after the Mets forced extra innings in the seventh inning of each game of a doubleheader, and they now have won two of the first three games of the four-game series.
The Phillies took the lead without the benefit of a base hit in the top of the ninth against Edwin Diaz (2-2), who gave up the tiebreaking sacrifice fly to Nick Maton, before the Mets built their winning rally in similarly piecemeal fashion against Hector Neris (1-5).
Pinch-hitter Trevor Blankenhorn led off the bottom of the ninth with a grounder that Rhys Hoskins misplayed for an error. Billy McKinney drew a pinch-hit walk before Kevin Pillar loaded the bases with an infield single. Luis Guillorme walked on a 3-2 pitch to force home Blankenhorn, and one out later Conforto drove home the winning run.
Cardinals 3, Pirates 1
Paul DeJong and Paul Goldschmidt hit long solo home runs to power St. Louis past visiting Pittsburgh.
The Cardinals snapped their five-game losing streak while winning for just the seventh time in their past 25 games. Meanwhile the Pirates lost their 12th road game in their past 14 tries.
Winning pitcher Adam Wainwright (6-5) allowed one run on six hits in six innings. He struck out eight batters and walked only one. Colin Moran had two hits for Pittsburgh.
Blue Jays 12, Orioles 4
Randal Grichuk hit a three-run home run and had four RBIs, Teoscar Hernandez added a solo homer and three RBIs and Toronto defeated visiting Baltimore at Buffalo.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. added a two-run blast for the Blue Jays, who have won two of the first three games of the four-game series. Bo Bichette had three of Toronto’s 15 hits with an RBI double.
Blue Jays left-hander Hyun Jin Ryu (7-4) allowed four runs, seven hits and two walks in 6 2/3 innings. Cedric Mullins and Pedro Severino each had a pair of RBIs for Baltimore.
Rays 13, Angels 3
A career-best four hits and two RBIs from Ji-Man Choi helped pace Tampa Bay to a 13-3 victory against host Los Angeles.
The Rays totaled 15 hits, with Manuel Margot and Mike Zunino each knocking in home runs. Tampa Bay scored 11 straight runs after briefly falling behind 3-2 in the third.
Rookie Shane McClanahan (3-2) logged a career-high six innings and had a strong outing, allowing three runs on four hits while striking out seven and walking two. Anthony Rendon had two RBIs for the Angels.
Brewers 10, Rockies 4
Christian Yelich’s two-run homer highlighted the six-run eighth inning that broke open a tie game and sent surging Milwaukee to a fourth straight win with a victory over visiting Colorado.
In a 4-4 game, Milwaukee loaded the bases with nobody out. Omar Narvaez followed with a go-ahead sacrifice fly and Luis Urias’ two-run single through the drawn-in infield made it 7-4. Yelich then belted his fifth homer of the season to right-center field and Willy Adames later delivered an RBI double.
Brad Boxberger (3-2) got the win with an inning of scoreless relief, giving up no hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Carlos Estevez (2-1) took the loss and allowed four runs on two hits and a walk, retiring just one batter in the eighth.
Reds 4, Braves 1
Jesse Winker homered for the first time in nearly three weeks and Luis Castillo (3-10) threw seven shutout innings as Cincinnati beat visiting Atlanta.
With the wind gusting out to left, Winker crushed an Ian Anderson fastball 435 feet to the seats in right-center for a 1-0 Cincinnati lead in the first. It was Winker’s team-leading 18th homer and first since his three-homer game June 6 at St. Louis.
Winker, who made a diving attempt for a Ronald Acuna Jr. double in the third, left the game after five innings due to a right hip contusion. Guillermo Heredia and William Contreras each had two hits for the Braves.
Rangers 8, Royals 0
Kyle Gibson (6-0) pitched seven innings of two-hit ball and struck out 10 as host Texas beat Kansas City in Arlington as Joey Gallo paced the Rangers offense, finishing the day 2-for-3 with two home runs and five RBIs.
The Rangers assured themselves of their first series win since sweeping Houston on May 21-23, and go for the sweep of the Royals on Sunday.
Kansas City went with a bullpen game with Kyle Zimmer opening up and throwing 22 pitches (two walks, two strikeouts) in the first before turning the game over to Kris Bubic (2-3) for the second. Bubic hit the first batter he faced and gave up three runs while only recording two outs before being pulled.
Mariners, White Sox (suspended)
Host Chicago’s game with Seattle was suspended in the bottom of the third inning and will resume play Sunday.
The game will resume with the first batter of the bottom of the third and the score tied at 0-0. The suspended game will be a nine-inning game but Sunday’s scheduled game between Chicago and Seattle will be a seven-inning contest.
Jose Abreu had the only hit of the game — a second-inning single — when the game entered a rain delay. Luis Torrens and Taylor Trammell both walked for Seattle in the top of the third. Lance Lynn and Logan Gilbert were the starting pitchers for the game.
Indians-Twins (postponed)
The game between Minnesota and visiting Cleveland was postponed due to rain in the area.
Saturday’s contest will be made up as part of a split doubleheader on Sept. 14, with the first game scheduled for 2:10 p.m. ET and the nightcap expected to begin at 7:40 p.m.

MLB Second-half: it's go time!
As another MLB All-Star Break is in the books, it’s time for these teams to get back to business for their next challenge, making playoffs.
Yes, I know the MLB postseason is in October and it’s only mid-July, but for some of these teams in the National League and American League to even think about earning a ticket to postseason they must focus on winning NOW.
For the National League, the race for those number one spots in each division are in a much closer reach than those in the American League. For instance in the NL West and Central the top four teams, and in the East the top three teams are all within 10 games or less of each other. That being said, a total of 11 teams have a pretty good chance in making a rally to the top or keeping ones front lead.
Central:
Cubs - 56-39 - 0
Brewers - 55-44 - 3
Cardinals - 49-47 - 7.5
Pirates - 49-49 - 8.5
East:
Phillies - 54-42 - 0
Braves - 53-42 - 0.5
Nationals - 48-49 - 6.5
West:
Dodgers - 54-43 - 0
Diamondbacks - 53-45 - 1.5
Rockies - 52-45 - 2
Giants - 51-48 - 4
As for the AL leaders, they continue to show no mercy with only a total of 7 teams between 10 games or less. In the AL East and Central it is the top two teams and in the West the top three teams. Leaving the majority of the other teams in high double digits behind the leaders, the highest being the Baltimore Orioles 39.5 games in the AL East.
Central:
Indians - 53-43 - 0
Twins - 44-51 - 8.5
East:
Red Sox - 69-30 - 0
Yankees - 62-34 - 5.5
West:
Astros - 65-35 - 0
Mariners - 59-39 - 5
Athletics - 55-43 - 9
So who will we see in post-season?
Right now it maybe to hard to call for some divisions, but maybe not so for others!
Teams to watch:
Boston Red Sox - In the past four seasons the Red Sox have had a roller coaster of highs and lows. After finishing dead last in ‘14 & ‘15 season, they then go to being in first place both ‘16 & ‘17 seasons only to lose in the Divisional Playoff Series both times. Now in first place AGAIN (as of now) and 5.5 games ahead of the New York Yankees and 19 games ahead of third place Tampa Bay Rays, it safe to say they are in a pretty good place. However, we all know that those pesky Yankees never back away from a challenge, so they will need to continue playing their best and keep that gap between the two to stay alive.
Milwaukee Brewers - After not making the postseason last year by one game, the Brewers started this season with one mission and one mission only to make it to October baseball. From acquiring big names in the off-season to dominating the beginning months, it always seems to be around this is the time when the Brewers start to struggle. After losing their last 8 of 10 games, falling into second place, and three games behind the Chicago Cubs, Brewers fans continue to pray for a quick turnaround. The Brewers definitely have some unfinished business and with that they hope to not allow yet another postseason slip through the cracks.
Houston Astros - First and foremost they are your World Series Champions! And if there is anything people love more than seeing a team win the big show, is seeing them come back the next year and winning it again. This year the Astros are on there way to doing so. As of now in first place, with a five game lead in the AL West.

MLB Power Rankings: Dodgers, Padres and then chaos reigns on our Week 3 list
The Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres held on to their perch atop our MLB Power Rankings as they prepare to meet again — this time in a four-game series starting Thursday at Dodger Stadium.
Putting the two NL West rivals there was the easy part. But putting any order to the rest of the 28 teams in baseball right now starts to get very tricky very quickly. Did our voters reward first-place surprises like the Boston Red Sox, Kansas City Royals and Seattle Mariners? How much faith do they still have in preseason favorites who have started slowly (we’re looking at you, New York Yankees, Houston Astros and Atlanta Braves)? And just how high does an 11-game winning streak move the Oakland Athletics on our list?
Here is what our expert panel decided based on what we’ve seen in the first three weeks of the season. We also asked ESPN MLB experts David Schoenfield, Bradford Doolittle, Joon Lee, Jesse Rogers and Alden Gonzalez to weigh in with one Week 2 observation for all 30 teams.
Previous rankings: Week 2 | Week 1 | Opening Day
1. Los Angeles Dodgers
Record: 14-4 Previous ranking: 1
Kenley Jansen reached 97 mph, threw his cutter in the mid-90s and featured some wipeout sliders in a save against the Mariners on Tuesday. One of his longtime catchers, Austin Barnes, admitted that it has been “a couple years” since Jansen’s stuff popped like that. If he has suddenly rediscovered his 2017 form, who can possibly beat the Dodgers? — Gonzalez
2. San Diego Padres
Record: 10-10 Previous ranking: 2
2 Related
The Padres dropped two out of three in a heated weekend series against the Dodgers, but they could have easily won all three games. Their starting pitching depth is really beginning to show itself with Adrian Morejon slated for Tommy John surgery and Dinelson Lamet‘s status in question. Ryan Weathers has stepped up in the No. 5 spot of a rotation that still features Yu Darvish, Blake Snell, Joe Musgrove and Chris Paddack. — Gonzalez
3. Boston Red Sox
Record: 12-7 Previous ranking: 12
This doesn’t look like the Boston team that finished in last place last season. Designated hitter J.D. Martinez has returned to slugger form since the return of in-game video, while both Nathan Eovaldi and Eduardo Rodriguez have started strong on the mound. The Red Sox have the most wins in the American League, with surprises like infielder Christian Arroyo and Rule 5 reliever Garrett Whitlock making substantive impacts. –Lee
Record: 7-6 Previous ranking: 9
Francisco Lindor is off to a slow start, hitting .222 and finally belting his first home run Wednesday night, but that should turn around soon enough. He’s showing the best plate discipline of his career with nine walks and just three strikeouts, but he hasn’t been squaring the ball up enough. No complaints about his defense, which has been terrific. — Schoenfield
Record: 10-9 Previous ranking: 10
The Rays rallied with a three-game sweep of the Yankees after dropping a four-game series against the Texas Rangers. Tyler Glasnow continues to look like a bona fide ace, with an 0.73 ERA and 36 strikeouts that are both fifth best in baseball. Last year’s postseason darling Randy Arozarena, meanwhile, finds himself in the middle of a slump, hitting .219/.306/.250 in his last eight games. –Lee
6. Oakland Athletics
Record: 12-7 Previous ranking: 18
The Athletics shook off a 1-7 start to go on a scalding-hot 11-game winning streak, relying on consistent starting pitching and clutch hitting. Infielder Jed Lowrie, who played a total of nine games in 2019 and 2020, leads the Oakland offense with a .323/.400/.516 line and six doubles and two homers through 17 games. — Lee
Record: 9-9 Previous ranking: 7
Chicago has been stuck in a win-one, lose-one cycle that reflects the up-and-down tendencies of a starting rotation that still looks promising. The last week or so has seen this pattern, with Carlos Rodon throwing the 20th no-hitter in White Sox history and ace Lucas Giolito getting tagged for eight runs in two innings at Fenway Park. When the rotation can piece together a couple of consistent weeks, the White Sox will be poised to go on a tear. — Doolittle
Record: 11-7 Previous ranking: 15
What more can be said of Corbin Burnes, or for that matter, the combo of Burnes and Brandon Woodruff? Beating the Padres in San Diego was a big series win for a MiIwaukee team at the top of the NL Central despite not having Christian Yelich or Lorenzo Cain. — Rogers
Record: 9-7 Previous ranking: 8
Baseball is back! Catch the 2021 MLB season on ESPN and the ESPN App.
Sunday, April 25 Padres-Dodgers, 7 ET on ESPN
Monday, April 26 Braves-Cubs, 7 ET on ESPN
Tuesday, April 27 Red Sox-Mets, 7:10 ET on ESPN
Shohei Ohtani was a bit erratic in his return to the mound on Tuesday, issuing six walks and falling behind on 13 of the 19 batters he faced. But it was his first start in 16 days, the product of a pesky blister. And he was nonetheless difficult to square up. If Ohtani can keep having some impact on the rotation, the Angels might have a shot. — Gonzalez
10. Atlanta Braves
Record: 8-10 Previous ranking: 6
Atlanta ranked 25th in rotation ERA (5.31) through Tuesday, and Max Fried and Drew Smyly are on the IL. Unfortunately, Mike Soroka was shut down in early April with shoulder inflammation and has yet to resume throwing. In the meantime, Bryse Wilson and Kyle Wright will get yet another opportunity to show something in the rotation. — Schoenfield
Record: 9-8 Previous ranking: 13
The Reds need Luis Castillo to figure things out to stick around the playoff race. His 6.05 ERA is dragging the staff mark down to No. 17 in baseball. His struggles are offset by strong early production from Wade Miley, Jeff Hoffman and Tyler Mahle. On offense, the Reds aren’t reliant on one or two hitters. Tyler Naquin has cooled off, but others have picked up the slack. — Rogers
Record: 11-7 Previous ranking: 19
The Giants’ rotation carries the sport’s fourth-lowest ERA. Five members of that rotation — Kevin Gausman, Anthony DeSclafani, Aaron Sanchez, Alex Wood and Johnny Cueto — could be free agents at season’s end. So if the Giants fall out of contention around midseason, they might be able to spin them off to acquire some nice controllable pieces for the next phase of their trajectory. — Gonzalez
Record: 6-11 Previous ranking: 5
After the first week of the season, the Twins looked like a team on the verge of putting it all together. My, how fast the wind can change in April. Jose Berrios has had a couple of so-so outings. No one seems to be hitting other than Nelson Cruz, as Byron Buxton has again struggled to stay on the field. A veteran-heavy bullpen that looked on paper like it might be one of baseball’s best has been horrendous. And, of course, everything has been disrupted by COVID-related absences and postponements. It’s been a bad month for the Twins, but lucky for them, no one in the AL Central looks to be sprinting away with the division any time soon. — Doolittle
Record: 8-8 Previous ranking: 17
The burden on the Cleveland rotation to prop up a bad offense can be illustrated by two stats. Its starters rank sixth in the majors during the first month in average game score, even though Zach Plesac has struggled. Nevertheless, Cleveland’s starters have out-game-scored the opposing starter only half the time — a .500 mark by this metric. For all his dominance, even Shane Bieber has fallen prey to this dynamic. His average game score over four starts is 71, ranking fifth in baseball. Yet Bieber’s game score record is only 2-2. — Doolittle
15. Houston Astros
Record: 7-10 Previous ranking: 4
There are two prospects in a tier of their own atop our list. Is Jordan Lawlar or Jack Leiter No. 1 in our top 100?
Kiley McDaniel
Houston started the season by making the Oakland Athletics look like the Bad News Bears, but what comes around came around with a vengeance. Oakland was five games back of the Astros after six games of the season. Now the Astros have thudded into the basement of the AL West after losing several key players to the injured list because of health and safety protocols. Houston’s patchwork offense has struggled to put up more than two or three runs per game, underscoring the importance of the Astros’ health scenario in the months to come. — Doolittle
16. New York Yankees
Record: 6-11 Previous ranking: 3
The series sweep by the Tampa Bay Rays represented the low point in this young season for the Bronx Bombers, with fans throwing objects on the field. General manager Brian Cashman isn’t ready to hit the panic button yet, preaching patience in both the team’s roster and the coaching staff. But the team’s offense — expected to be the biggest strength — and the rotation have both struggled, exacerbating the other’s weaknesses. — Lee
17. Seattle Mariners
Record: 11-7 Previous ranking: 24
2020 Rookie of the Year Kyle Lewis returned to the lineup on Tuesday, and rumor is that Jarred Kelenic may not be far behind. Two big bright spots early on: Mitch Haniger, after not playing since June of 2019, is hitting and playing a good right field; and Kendall Graveman is throwing in the upper 90s with movement and location out of the bullpen. — Schoenfield
Record: 8-10 Previous ranking: 16
What is an ace? Well, that’s complicated. So we set specific criteria and identified the pitchers who fit.
Kiley McDaniel’s ace rankings
The Cardinals’ record continues to hover around .500, and their run differential is basically nil. The good news is that Jack Flaherty is starting to round into form, and the ageless Yadier Molina continues to hit. — Rogers
19. Kansas City Royals
Record: 10-7 Previous ranking: 22
You don’t want to overreact to a small sample of defensive stats, so put this observation in the “things to keep an eye on” basket: The Royals are dead last in defensive runs saved in the early going. The thing is, Kansas City is roughly break-even in DRS as compiled by the actual fielders. However, the Royals rank last in the team columns of DRS that rate how much run prevention teams have gotten from defensive alignments. This was not a problem last season, so it may well be a fluke. It better be, or the Royals’ surprising stay in first place will prove to be a short one. — Doolittle
Record: 8-10 Previous ranking: 11
The team’s biggest bright spot remains Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who looks like the slugger many expected him to become when he arrived in the majors, hitting .383/.513/.650 with four homers and 11 RBIs in 18 games. The biggest question is whether the injuries will get the best of Toronto, with Teoscar Hernandez and prized offseason acquisition George Springer on the IL and regulars Lourdes Gurriel, Cavan Biggio, Danny Jansen, Marcus Semien and Rowdy Tellez off to rough starts. — Lee
Record: 9-9 Previous ranking: 14
At an age when many pitchers are starting to slow down, Jacob deGrom’s velocity and production are on the upswing. Here’s why he could be baseball’s next king of longevity.
Jeff Passan
Aaron Nola doesn’t often get mentioned alongside Jacob deGrom, Gerrit Cole and a couple of others as one of the best starters in the game, but maybe he should. He’s 1-1 with a 2.19 ERA after pitching a shutout on Sunday (the first nine-inning shutout of his career), has a 28-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio and has allowed one home in 24⅔ innings. — Schoenfield
Record: 8-9 Previous ranking: 23
Jazz Chisholm has been one of the pleasant early surprises in the game, hitting for average, hitting for power, drawing walks, stealing a few bases and bringing flair and energy. The tools were never a question, but the contact ability was the concern. He has reined in the strikeouts by not chasing pitches and is looking like a potential star. — Schoenfield
Record: 8-9 Previous ranking: 20
Javier Baez is on pace for an offensive season like none other: .200, 40 homers, 121 RBIs, 50 steals, 10 walks and 313 strikeouts through Tuesday’s game. Of course he won’t keep up the pace, but as the Cubs hitter with the most at-bats with runners in scoring position, Baez needs to cut down the K’s and show some more consistency. Otherwise, the Cubs will be stuck in neutral all season. — Rogers
Record: 7-9 Previous ranking: 21
How a new generation of players is shifting MLB’s culture. Joon Lee »
Rough week for the Nationals, as Stephen Strasburg (shoulder) and Juan Soto (shoulder) both landed on the injured list. Soto’s stay is expected to be the minimum 10 days. We’ll have to wait and see on Strasburg. At least Patrick Corbin, who got shelled in his first two starts, pitched six scoreless innings Tuesday. — Schoenfield
25. Texas Rangers
Record: 9-10 Previous ranking: 27
Their run differential is second worst in the AL, but the Rangers’ record is hovering around .500 thanks to a huge series win on the road against the defending league champion Rays. Second baseman Nick Solak has already doubled his home run total from all of 2020 — he has four — and has hit safely in all but five games. — Rogers
Record: 8-10 Previous ranking: 25
Carson Kelly, one of the biggest pieces of the Paul Goldschmidt trade from December of 2018, is off to a hot start, batting .375/.563/.719 with more walks (12) than strikeouts (10). He’s chasing less, lifting the ball better and barreling pitches within the top 10% of the league. So yeah, there’s one bright spot. — Gonzalez
Record: 8-10 Previous ranking: 28
Cedric Mullins continues to be the bright spot on this team, placing in the top five in the American League in hits behind the likes of J.D. Martinez, Xander Bogaerts, Mitch Haniger and Yermin Mercedes. Lefty John Means continues to throw the ball well, posting a 1.52 ERA in four starts. –Lee
Record: 8-10 Previous ranking: 30
Which teams will surprise or disappoint? Who will be this year’s must-watch players? We asked baseball insiders to weigh in. Jesse Rogers
Pittsburgh has been surprisingly resilient despite the loss of Ke’Bryan Hayes. JT Brubaker has opened eyes on the mound, while outfielder Bryan Reynolds was up for player of the week in the NL. — Rogers
Record: 7-11 Previous ranking: 26
The last few years, it seems like the Tigers become a team to watch on the trade deadline rumor mill because they have a starter throwing well who seems like he’d bring a good return but may not quite fit with Detroit’s contention timeline. Expect this to be the case once again in 2021, as Matt Boyd has become a deadline trade candidate to watch, as he has been in years past. Boyd has been terrific early in the season, putting up a 2.12 ERA with a sub-3.00 FiP and an average game score of 61. His game score record is a perfect 4-0 — the Tigers were otherwise just 3-9 by that metric through Tuesday. — Doolittle
Record: 6-12 Previous ranking: 30
The Nolan Arenado-less Rockies, who have already had to play the world-beating Dodgers seven times, sport the worst record in the majors. And their best players have not been immune to the struggles. Charlie Blackmon, their leader, is batting .176/.311/.314. Trevor Story, who will soon be one of the game’s most coveted free agents, carries a .689 OPS. — Gonzalez

Worst MLB postseason losses of all-time
Boston Red Sox second baseman Brock Holt. (Kevin R. Wexler/NorthJersey.com via USA TODAY NETWORK)Trevor Story takes the field by himself in what could be his final Rockies game by Jordanna ClarkWho has the most home runs in MLB playoffs history? by Alicia de Artola No team wants to end up on the wrong side of the list of the worst losses in the history of the MLB playoffs, but someone has to be there.Blowouts happen all the time. They make sense when a playoff contender beats up a bottom dweller. What’s more shocking is when a blowout happens in the playoffs. There have been some huge ones through the years.
Worst losses in the MLB playoffs ever
- 1999 ALDS Game 4: Red Sox over Indians, 23-7 - 2001 ALDS Game 3: Indians over Mariners, 17-2 - 2018 ALDS Game 3: Red Sox over Yankees, 16-1 - 1996 NLCS Game 7: Braves over Cardinals, 15-0 - 1936 World Series Game 2: Yankees over Giants, 18-4 - 1996 NLCS Game 5: Braves over Cardinals, 14-0Congratulations Red Sox fans, your team is responsible for two of the biggest beatdowns in MLB postseason history. The 1999 ALDS saw Cleveland take a 2-0 lead before Boston battled back with three straight wins including an exclamation point in Game 4. Their 23 runs are the most in a playoff game ever. The Red Sox also prevailed in the 2018 ALDS over the Yankees, shocking their rivals with 16 runs.Cleveland can take heart in the fact they came back a couple of years later and smashed the Mariners, 17-2 in Game 3 of the 2001 ALDS. Unfortunately for them, Seattle pulled it together to take the series with wins in Game 4 and 5.The 1996 NLCS fell apart for the Cardinals, who did well to force a Game 7 after losing 14-0 in Game 5. It just didn’t go their way when Atlanta dropped 15 unanswered runs on them in the final game of the series. The Dodgers beat the Braves 15-3 in the 2020 NLCS, ranking 10th in postseason win margin.
