apparently the bugsnax community does in fact exist on here!! since my last bugsnax post kinda blew up here’s doodles/concept art of some lead Snakolytes for my own personal story<333

in order we have:

Banbo Dustnote (he/they), who runs the Research Sector and is represented by the Megamaki. Banbo oversees biological studies of Bugsnax and their components as well as studying their behavior and motives. He works closely with Mebby and is a bit of a stoner-type guy

Mebby Woolbag (she/her), who runs the Training Sector and is represented by the Mama Mewon. yes she is related to THAT Woolbag, although she’s denounced religion in favor of cold, hard facts. she works closely with Banbo to train and control Bugsnax, similar to Gramble!!

Grella Snowfly (they/them), who runs the Containment Sector and is represented by the Daddy Cakelegs. Grella ensures that no one outside of the Snakolytes knows about the existence of Bugsnax without good reason (Clumby would work in this department). they loathe Alder but they’re always seen together

Alder Spicebrum (they/he), who runs the History Sector and is represented by the Mothza Supreme. Alder is like an archivist, collecting historical records and keeping them organized as well as documenting present happenings (Bronica Lottablog and Alegander Jamfoot would work under him). They like Grella a lot for some reason and take their job very unseriously!!

hi there! you said in your tags that the latest chapter of deep end contains the two scenes you built the entire fic on. i hope i'm not too nosy but i was wondering if you could tell us more about those two scenes? <3

omg hi anon!! yes i would LOVE to tell you more about those two scenes 🫡 gonna put this beneath the cut because i am a certified yapper and this WILL be longer than i intend it to be

the scenes in question are the two arguments with cosette and grantaire at the end. the cosette argument in particular is the basis of so much of this fic — the line "The dutiful martyr Enjolras, who has a flag where he should have a heart." was one of the very first things i wrote for deep end. not a very charitable place to begin from when it comes to enjolras' characterization, but even when i first wrote it, it was less about who enjolras was and more about how he was perceived.

okay i just scrolled allllllllll the way back to the very beginning of the edit history in my original deep end document (still titled "enjolsette siblings?" btw) and first of all i started writing this in MARCH which is wild to me. that was the month i finished reading les mis. wow. anyway apparently i wrote the first drafts of both these scenes in the same evening, and i'm honestly surprised by how much of them remained unchanged in the final version. at the time that i wrote them, they both occurred in chapter 8 of what i PLANNED to be 10 chapters. that's also extremely funny to me. there was really a time when i thought i could contain this story to 10 chapters...

when i wrote these chapters, i hadn't even written enjolras and cosette meeting yet. the original draft of the grantaire argument didn't have enjolras realizing he was in love with grantaire then. i was still in the first 10k of writing deep end when i wrote them. all that existed before these arguments were the original draft of chapter 1, half of the original draft of chapter 2, and the conversation with combeferre in chapter 5 that begins with combeferre saying "You've been spending a lot of time with Grantaire lately." so when i say these scenes are the basis of the entire fic, i really mean it. the whole time i was writing, i was pushing enjolras toward this point.

from the moment that i began writing deep end, it was intended to be an exploration of enjolras & his ideas of duty and justice. it has spiraled into being a story about a lot of other things, but in the kitchen with cosette, it comes down to this again. it comes down to: enjolras, and what he thinks his duty is, and just how wrong he is.

because he is wrong. money, whether she wants it or not, isn't going to "fix" cosette. there is no "fixing" cosette, because she's not broken. has she been hurt? yes. did their father fail her? undeniably. but depositing a check into her bank account isn't the answer to this. enjolras wants to heal her in some material sort of way, and that just isn't possible. all he can do is be her brother.

so, i had to take enjolras to that place. i had to make him obsess over "paying for his father's sins." i had to make him stressing himself out over the money. i had to make him love cosette without understanding it. and i had to make him terrible.

i love making enjolras terrible, i won't lie. a lot of the time when i'm writing, i like to see how terrible i can make him without alienating him completely from the reader. when i was trying to decide what line from this chapter to use as the summary, i sent a few options to my friend cossette, who read an earlier draft of this fic. she chose the line about him being "capable of being truly terrible" for me, because she said that was kind of the whole thing i was going for.

and it was! for him to be able to say the things he says in this chapter — from telling cosette "Look what he did to you!" to him saying to grantaire "Your chest is even emptier than mine. All you have is an empty bottle and a half-assed joke." he HAS to be terrible. these are terrible things to say!

unfortunately, i think they're also very human things to say. i joke a lot about how much i enjoy making characters say the worst possible things to each other, but it's true. i love doing it. because i think it's so tragically human. especially when you're saying these things to a person that you love. it's easy to hurt the people we love, because we know them well enough to know just where to hit them.

when enjolras hurts cosette, it's mostly by accident. he is coming from a good place, but going all about it wrong. when he hurts grantaire, it is with intent. he and grantaire have spent years hurting each other. when enjolras finds himself falling after fighting with cosette, it's too easy for him to cling to the closest familiar thing: fighting with grantaire.

building up to the fight with grantaire was a different beast. whereas the argument with cosette is borne from misguided ideas of justice, the fight with grantaire is entirely personal. as i was writing deep end, i had to write an enjolras and a grantaire who could come to this place, in very different ways. enjolras had to find himself leaning on grantaire; he had to be in more pain than anyone realized, including himself; he had to be terrible. grantaire, in contrast, had to have some amount of self control; he had to be someone who could be leaned on; he had to be able to walk away. the grantaire we meet in chapter 1 meets very little of these requirements. his development is just as important as enjolras', even if he isn't the main focus.

this answer is, as predicted, much much longer than i intended so i will wrap things up. when writing longform fic, i tend to start with the worst thing and work my way outwards from there. these two scenes are the worst things. because i knew where he was going, i knew while i was writing that i had to shape and enjolras who would find himself saying and doing the worst things he could. that's why he's cruel to grantaire in the first few chapters, why he finds himself arguing with grantaire despite knowing better, why he constantly finds himself self-destructing. i always tell everyone that deep end is about enjolras beating the marble statue allegations, and that's never truer than it is in chapter 18.

for the record, you are always welcome to stop by and ask me about deep end! i have soooooo much director's commentary and i love to yap. i could talk all day about what happened in the original draft, what was added later, ideas i toyed with, why i made the decisions i did, etc. thank you so much for this ask <333 i had lots and lots of fun answering it even if my answer is pretty much as long as deep end herself.

Not a new accusation, but since people are once again making ominous statements about the "concerning" potential of a Snapewives situation... maybe we should pass around a reminder of who, exactly, they're referencing?

The Snapewives (Fanlore Link, Reddit Synopsis) were an extremely small niche forum in a really huge fandom that are pretty much only known for infamous levels of cringe that got them mocked relentlessly when discovered by Fan Wank. We are talking a tiny subsection of a subsection of a subsection of the massive HP fandom that got really earnest with their self-insert fanfic / roleplaying (and really didn't like the canon ending of Snape's arc). There's actually a really interesting paper on analyzing "Snapism" as a religion that alludes to their particular issues with Christian faith and erotic fantasies, and can kinda sketch in how they might have gotten to where they did. It's weird, no doubt, but honestly sounds pretty harmless?

Like, I'm not sure if we're using the BITE model that they would even count as a real cult - "Snape" seems very controlling and makes them do things (cook specific dinners, stop biting nails, go on diets, etc.) but, like, there's no cult leader being "Snape". These are all self-assigned "tasks" via "channeling" (which is again weird but not super unique - read the paper) and then the women themselves disagree on things and could just come across as a really intense roleplaying forum having disputes over ratings for self-insert fic, among other things.

The situation is different when there's an obvious cult leader - see the extensive documented history of Andy "thanfiction" compiled here. Trigger warnings for sexual assault, abuse, manipulation... all the stuff you expect from cults. And really getting into reading the supplementary info will take you many hours, btw.

Anyway... having looked extensively at our "fandom cult" examples, I don't think I'm remotely "concerned" that we're veering toward cult behavior. Or Snapewives behavior. The Izzy section of fandom - and, for that matter, the Izzy Anti section of fandom - haven't really done anything that hasn't been done in countless flame wars before? Like we as a collective haven't even gotten to the levels of targeted character hate that I can glimpse by searching "Teen Wolf" right now, and frankly OFMD still isn't big enough to dream of replicating 2010s fandom's biggest hits. There's some cutting edge weaponization of social justice that's a more modern development, but that's still fundamentally just fighting about the fiction. Even the one doxxing incident is unfortunately not unique.

Sheesh, "Izzy Canyon" isn't even demonstrating a unified meta or consistent S2 desires / shipping preferences / etc. We're just better at not being dicks about it by necessity?

Theory… Theory!? Babes that is no theory it is 100% truth! The us government has worked with the Italian Mafia more times than any of us will ever know.

See it all started when America was getting nervous because they realized most of their dock workers were Italian immigrants. They were afraid one would be an agent for the Italian army and coordinate an attack on the US navy. So what do they do? They approach Lucky Luciano. A Don that they currently had in prison. They said “Luci… baby we need your help…” Luci said “bet, but if I help you you’re letting me out of here” and america said “sir yes sir 🫡”

They moved him to a prison in NY and let up so he could have visitors, aka converse with his contacts he had at the docks. That way he could secure them and let them all know that they were now working with the government. He played a huge role in keeping NY safe. He kept informants out, disallowed strikes and made sure the us boats were treated like precious cargo.

Luci got hold of his contacts in Sicily and together they managed to draw detailed maps of exactly where look outs were, how many, what kind of guns they had, weak points. Everything america would need to pull off an invasion.

The family in Sicily they were working with said. “Look when you arrive to Sicily one of my guys will meet you at the docks, let him in your tank and do exactly what he says” so the Americans do it. This guy proceeds to point out every single Defence, watchman and barricade. America managed to take them all out with a single tank. Many soilders just threw down their weapons and surrendered right away.

i mean as a mild digital hoarder i keep a backlog / archival history for any and every fic i come across that peaks my interest on a google doc that is 208 pages as of rn (i haven’t updated it in like a week but i’ve already racked up a bunch more), i also use an app meant for saving articles like in a reading list as a more filtered database for fics i like with a tagging system, and i use the notes app for a more comprehensive list of even more filtered fics i like and i have a separate categorical note for each character and different genres, some of which i actually maxed out the ‘maximum amount of attachments’ for one note so i’ve had to continue on another note…

anyways moral of the story: don’t feel too bad, we tumblr fic girlies who may or may not have ocd have to stick together 🫡

Nicole Brennan (wife) - Senior Medical Officer

The first message from Nicole says:

Nicole: “I’m sorry about everything. I wish I could just talk to someone. It’s all falling apart here. I can’t believe what’s happening . . . It’s strange . . . such a little thing . . .”

My Theory: I believe that little thing she’s referring to is The Marker. I think Nicole isn't a member of the Church of Unitology. Since in a later log she requested for more help to deal with the influx of cases and that nobody was telling her what was happening.

I think that after Dr. Kyne Terrence was arrested for the accidental murder of Captain Benjamin Mathius he told Nicole about The Marker in hopes of finding a cure/solution. Since we hear about prisoners interacting with the Doctors like how Nurse Elieen Frisk was killed by prisoner Harris B.

Dr. Kyne Terrence - Chief Scientist Officer

Member of Church of Unitology who seems to no longer believe in the church.

Upon the Marker’s original discovery he wrote: “On this day, we are blessed”

After what he saw he said: “I wouldn’t be certain of that. There was nothing divine in what I saw.”

Dr. Kyne Terrence also accidentally killed Captain Benjamin Mathius when attempting to prevent the Marker from being delivered to the Church of Unitology. When attempting to subdue Mathius he stabbed him in the head.

Dr. Kyne Terrence was deeply concerned about the colony. Hesitant to rely on Dr. Mercers but needed his expertise.

Dr. Kyne Terrence: “We need solutions and we need them quickly.”

Despite Captain Mathius Benjamin’s urgency, Dr. Kyne Terrence suggested delaying bringing the Marker onto the ship a day or two.

Dr. Kyne Terrence: “What’s happening down there is just too unique, too unprecedented, to cut it short without proper time to study the causes and effects.”

He wanted to meet with Planetside Drs. Sciarello and Welland to get their observations which Mathius agreed to.

Harris B. (Employee) - Prisoner from Colony

He took Planetside Dr. Sciarello hostage, killed Planetside Nurse Evans, was brought onto the ship and then killed Eileen Fisk.

Notes from Chief Psych Officer Dr. Warwick B:

Harris is asleep, after another strong sedative. He seems literally unable to sleep without chemical aid. Most people succumb to exhaustion after 50+ hours of waking, regardless of any desire to stay awake. Not Harris.

His explanation of events on the colony is also odd, and points to the same paranoia we’ve seen elsewhere planetside. His guilt is not in doubt- two planetside security officers were present when he took Dr. Sciarello hostage and murdered Nurse Evans- and he doesn’t deny his actions. But he insists there was no crime, nor does he feel guilt.

This is classic sociopathic behavior, but Harris exhibits no other symptoms. He is affable and friendly, able to empathize and offer original opinions. When questioned about the murder, however, he becomes withdrawn and intransigent, displaying schizophrenic behavior. He also undergoes intermittent hallucinatory period, again similar to those experienced by other colonists.

Harris claims he threatened the Doctor because he “had to stop the dreams and make faces”, and that he’ll kill again to “Make it whole again”. What that means, I haven’t determined yet. A most intriguing case.

okay this has been my week from hell. so small little rant before the idea for context:

currently all the members in my family (including me) are moving from our one house to three separate locations in different cities within one week. as i’m typing this i’m literally packing my car to move in 2 hours. and my sanity is wearing THIN. my dad is so stressed and it’s rubbing off on the rest of my family and essentially everyone is miserable 🫡

I’ve gone with both, because I think you propose some wonderful lil thoughts! Jake has a whole damn folder. It’s got all the documents you need, all the houses you’re interested in and their full history and all the realtors numbers on speed dial. Yes, even the schedule.

He has a two month calendar in this folder set out with all the dates for viewings. You both want to move in two months time exactly because your baby is due in three months. You found this deadline so overwhelming at first, but Jake held you as you rocked worried in his arms and reassured you he would take care of every little detail, and oh boy did he!

At the house viewings he’s asking every question under the sun and checking out all the rooms with a fine tooth comb. If there’s even a chip of paint, he’s not taking it. He wants it to be perfect for you both and your lil one. Always reminding you this will be your forever home.

With Bob, he’s a little more relaxed about it, but will still take care of every detail. He has a good friend who is a realtor and you go with them, making sure you’re always getting the best detail.

He also has someone who works in housing who comes with you to every viewing. They can spot an inch of mould from a mile away. Bobby just uses his resources well to ensure you’re getting the best for you and him!

If you’re feeling overwhelmed about it all, he takes the papers from your hand and presses a soft kiss to your lips. “Sweetheart, don’t worry about this. I’ll call up my friend. We’ll sort this, promise.”

On the week of your move, both Jake and Bob would send you away with one of your relatives. They would take care of everything and would drop you off at your new home at the end of the week with flowers in the dining room and a welcome home banner on the front door.

History sounds like a lot but also kinda interesting?? My last gen ed credit that I haven’t finished yet is a history class and I’m kinda dreading taking it bc nothing my school offers seems interesting 😔 but ASL is cool!! I tried taking it last semester and it didn’t work out to well bc my teacher was… smth but I’m trying to learn on my own bc I feel like it would be very helpful in my career!

Unfortunately did not get the chai latte today bc I took advantage of my free day to get in some #gamertime buuuttt I will probably go tomorrow!! I’m very excited about it bc I loooove tea and I do need to not get all of my caffeine from energy drinks 😭 I drink water the most out of anything but I have had quite a few phases where I drank waaayyyyy too much redbull and the Dutch bros rebels got me thru my night classes last fall. i'm technically i did 😁😁 not much but i'm okay! that's fun!! yeah, history is definitely a lot, i am so tired of analyzing government documents you have no idea 🥲🥲 honestly i like most history classes i just don't like writing 7 billion papers for them. it really is! i love ASL !! i've been taking it since high school so i definitely get what you mean, some teachers can be super weird about it i have no idea why. also that's part of the reason i'm minoring in it!! i really do actually love ASL but i definitely think it will help in my career as well!

So just to be clear: I'm not talking about documentation here; in my experience I've not found a vast amount of difference between game engine's basic documentation (and honestly an engine where you can't find or use the documentation is a big red flag anyway haha).

I also didn't intend for this to sound dismissive of Godot as an engine; I'm sure Godot is just fine for some people, but for people like me - whose workflow is pretty dependent on being able to quickly troubleshoot problems countless people in the past has also discovered - an big history of troubleshooting hyper-specific issues or quirks of an engine is an incredibly useful resource to have.

As with anything, use whatever engine works best for your brain! 🫡

One of the biggest things I value when picking a game engine iffor my projects is how plentiful - and how accessible - the documentation and community support is for it. It's probably the biggest reason why I have stuck with Unity for years over Godot or Unreal; when I encounter an issue I know throughout its ~15 year lifetime someone has probably encountered my issue before and posted online (whether that be substack or Unity Answers/Forums) about how they were banging their head against it too, and some smart people have not only explained why some things work the way they do but also how to fix it. As part of my process it's pretty integral to troubleshooting when I encounter problems and can seriously save bacon when working on shipping projects that aren't just tiny prototypes or experiments.

When I played with Godot I found there wasn't a ton of information available when I started to run into hyperspecific issuesand I've generally found Unreal's forums are typically useless at the best of times and straight up broken at the worst of times, so I've never been eager to jump there either (I suspect this is due to it primarily being used by larger studios who keep a lot of that stuff internal and under wraps).

It might not matter for some people but I think this element is key for my workflow for shipping something, since a blocker on a project - especially later in development - can easily cause some real intense problems, and sometime you don't want to have to figure out how to reinvent the wheel.
