September News Round-Up

The first edition of dailyjidol’s pseudo news recap is here! Below the read more is a compilation of some notable news stories that we haven’t previously posted about.

This month features some big news for AKB48 and Namie Amuro, the typical strange and publicity snagging news you’ve grown to expect from WACK groups, graduations, hiatuses, and more.

AKB48

It’s been a big month for the super-group. They became the #1 best selling female artists, surpassing Hamasaki Ayumi, though she remains the best selling solo artist. Overall, they are now #4 on the overall best selling artist list. [x] Additionally, Watanabe Mayu has unsurprisingly been chosen as the center for the next single, to be released on November 22nd, though she will graduate from the group on October 31. But that’s not all! AKB48 videos are now accessible in the US again.

BiS

Pour Lui is suspended from BiS activities due to her failing her DiET or DiE challenge. She was supposed to lose a certain amount of weight before a deadline, and failed to meet the goal. [x] As a direct result of this, even more BiS auditions were held this month, with body weight being a major factor for anyone interested in auditioning. [x] Can WACK go back to making fun of idol culture instead of its own idols, now?

Checkmate

Checkmate member Rina graduated from the group on September 3 due to poor heath. The group will continue on as a trio with the remaining members. [x]

DISDOL

DISDOL is starting fresh. It was announced that the current members will graduate on Oct. 9, and 3 new members will replace them. The new line-up will take a more band focused path. [x]

EMPiRE

Finally, EMPiRE has been revealed! Even though they announced their group last month, EMPiRE was mostly shrouded in mystery until the 28th. WACK is no stranger to setting up twitter follower goals that need to be met before members are properly introduced, and certainly isn't a stranger to changing out the rules on it. The initial goal was 10k, then 15k, and then apparently back to 10k as management seemingly got impatient with the mystery and let the girls show their faces. The official group twitter, the center of this, is here.

Fuwafuwa

3 graduations last month weren’t enough for this Rising Pro group. Saeki Mao ended her contract with the company on the September 12, and graduated immediately. Along with still being included in the group picture for the single, her solo cd for the upcoming single Jelly Beans will still be available, and she was present for the MV recording. She stated that her reason for graduating is wanting to pursue acting. [x*]

Namie Amuro

Along with having her incredible 25th anniversary concert this month, it was also announced that she will sing the new opening theme for the anime One Piece. [x] A 12-part Hulu documentary focusing on her has also been announced. An episode will will be released every month, with the first being released on October 1. (Unconfirmed but will most likely be Japan Hulu exclusive.)[x] Most notably, however, she announced that she will be retiring on September 16 in 2018. [x]

PassCode

Imada Yuna of PassCode was placed on hiatus due to health concerns caused by an ovarian cyst. She is scheduled to return to the group of November 10th, before the group’s ZENITH tour. [x]

Pink Diamond

The acrobatic group made a psuedo-comeback at Rising Girls Fest, after being largely pushed off Harajuku Ekimae Parties stage. Unfortunately, this performance resulted in an injury for one member of the trio, Nomura Marin. She has been scheduled for about six months of rest for surgery and recovery, though that is subject for change. For now, it has been reported that the group will continue as a duo. [x*]

SPL∞ASH

SPL∞ASH emerged victorious from Idol Matsuri, which concluded September 2. They beat out groups like CY8ER, Banzai Japan, Milkyberry, P.IDL Nagoya, and more. [x]

SUPER☆GiRLS

After going on hiatus in April due to health concerns, Kidoguchi Sakurako announced her graduation from the Idol Street group this month. She expressed happiness that the fans continued to support her while she was on hiatus, and is apologetic that she will not be returning. Her last day was on September 30. [x]

Up Up Girls (Kari)

On September 15, the group held its final performance with Ayano Sato and Minami Sengoku. The two have now graduated after 7 years with the group, and Up Up Girls (Kari) will continue on as 5. Their first performance as 5 took place on September 24th, and marked a new chapter for Up Up Girls. [x]

Yukueshirezu Tsurezure

Cococo of Yukueshirezu Tsurezure has decided to withdraw. Though she wishes to continue singing in some way, she had made the decision to separate from the group. Her last performance will be on October 9th. In the meantime, the group is now holding auditions for a new member. The deadline for auditions is October 8th, so it probably won’t take long after her departure for the new member(s?) to step in. [x]

Moso Calibration

Mahiru Kurumizawa of Moso Calibration (MoCali) will become the first idol contributor/columnist for NEO Magazine, a UK Asian Entertainment publication. She is fluent in English and will be offering her perspective as an idol on Japanese pop culture. [x]

Nogizaka46

Nogizaka46 has their second million selling single with "Nigemizu" which only took 3 weeks to do so. Their first million selling single took 13 weeks to chart. [x]

ClariS

The members of ClariS, known for performing with masks on, revealed their faces at their September 16th concert. No official photos of their faces have been revealed. [from Jpopasia]

Last Idol

Yasushi Akimoto will be debuting an idol group based off the successful concept of 'Produce 101' in South Korea. For those unfamiliar with SK's 'Produce 101'; Members will be recruited from various talent agencies to compete on the show. The top 10 that survive until the end of the program and ultimately become official members signed to Universal Music Japan. Unlike the South Korean counter part, Last Idol is a permanent group set to debut this December. Seems Akimoto knows a good idea when he steals one. [from Jpopasia]

Momoiro Clover Z

Momoiro Clover Z is going to be the first idol group to perform on "MTV: Unplugged" an honor only known to Utada Hikaru, Ken Hirai, and VAMPS previously, on the rather Western-centered TV program. The date has not been set for the broadcast as this time. [from Jpopasia]

Living Dead I Dolls

After only being a project for about a year; all remaining members of Living Dead I Dolls will be graduating. No news about if the project will be renewed with new members or not. [From homidols]

Theatre, music, and photos. It’s cool to love something that you like, aim for the best in what you are good at, and express yourself. Whatever wall stands up, people who go with all one's heart and mind and strength are chosen, the gathered ones will be in the general festival. It’s youth!

In my high school days, I’m one with AKB. Too bad I couldn’t make it to the cultural festival. But I also have a goal. It’s been my dream since I was a child to become an actress. Since I was an elementary school student, I love theatre and musicals and have continued to challenge auditions many times over and over. Even if the Great East Japan Earthquake didn’t happen, I thought I was moving forward little by little.

It was 3 days before the audition that the earthquake occurred at my home in Sendai City. The house was drenched in water, I lined up for public phone for 2 hours to call the office. 「I am safe. I want to take it, but it’s impossible」. I was really happy when I heard the news from the office that they’re postponing the audition.

For the first time as a member of AKB, I visited the afflicted areas in November 2011. Because I thought that I moved to Tokyo and 「left my hometown」, I was afraid to step in. I received the voices of「Welcome back」, and I came to think that the reason I can do my best is because there is this place.

Since then, I’ve always had the image of 「The child from the disaster area」. It can’t be helped because that’s what I wanted. I also appeared in the documentary. The truth is, I wanted to do fun things and made people laugh. I wanted to. However, I thought that I’m not being modest, I felt like I need to conceal myself.

At that time, there was a plan to read aloud manga with full power, when I tried it as I wanted, I was told by the children of Tohoku 「That was funny」, the road was opened. The feeling of thinking about my hometown, the feeling of wanting to enjoy my youth to the fullest, both of them are not lies. Both of them are me. Last year I graduated from AKB and once again chasing the dream of becoming an actress.

I also started to study photography. Sometimes I take pictures of the disaster areas and put them on the Instagram. Because I’m the child of Miyagi, I carry on the disaster area. This interview is interesting…no…it’s precious.

We all think that Makiko is the most appropriate to be captain of SKE but It’s actually not easy for Makiko herself. And Anna-sensei, the person who gave birth to SKE, kindly(?) advised Makiko for that. LOL

I love how Anna-sensei taught them. If it was someone else, not Anna-sensei in that day, SKE wouldn’t be like this today.

Their bond, their passion, their story…it’s so good to know and support this group.

On that day, Saito Makiko’s facial expression showed a bit of nervousness.

However, she still smiled.

That’s right, Makiko didn’t know the true meaning of this.

The confrontation with the creator who gave life to SKE48, Makino Anna, after this.

CP: Yes.

Anna-sensei: Oh!!

Anna-sensei: Yeah, she doesn’t look at me at all.

CP: That’s not it. I am looking!

- Though you say that but you don’t look *laugh* So firstly, please introduce how come we have an interview this time. Captain, please.

CP: it started from 2 and a half minutes clip in Team E “Te wo tsunaginagara” stage. In DOCUMENTARY of SKE48 two years ago, there was also this scene; the scene that Anna-sensei was teaching us ‘Pinocchio Gun’

- The one that Anna-sensei yelled at (Matsui) Rena-san “your expression is too plain!” “don’t do things halfway!”, right? That scene is well-known to SKE fans.

CP: I was told that I have to say these famous lines in 2 and a half minutes clip.

- It was noon stage of May.9 last year. What you wanted to say is “you were asked to do”, right?

CP: That’s right. So, it’s not my fault.

Anna-sensei: Hahahaha

CP: I was just acting according to the script.

Anna-sensei: About this, I already knew it for long time from fans’ report in Twitter.

CP: *stunned*

Anna-sensei: I also watched the clip after that. You really did it halfway.

CP: Hahaha

- Though you were saying “Don’t do things halfway!” *laugh*

Anna-sensei: If you want to do it, you should do it exaggeratedly, make people laugh. For this, you made it looked kind of awkward.

CP: I’m sorry…

- Then, another mockery in 2 and a half minutes clip of Jun.12.

CP: it was not mockery! I just went with the flow!

Anna-sensei: Was it all staff’s thought?

CP: Yes!

Anna-sensei: For me, I thought that if it was Makiko, she would go against it for sure. “Anna-sensei said it honestly, let’s not play with it”

- Didn’t you argue?

CP: …No. I’m just realized now that I could argue…

Anna-sensei: Hahahaha

- Have you got in touch after that?

Anna-sensei: We met once in Rena’s graduation concert?

CP: Yes, we came across at backstage. I hadn’t started using Twitter at that time. I got a grasp of Anna-sensei’s reaction from internet. So, when I ran into her, I felt like “she found me…” *laugh*

Anna-sensei: I was thinking that we might need to talk on the stage.

- The script that day was Rena-san fell during “Pinocchio Gun” and Anna-sensei came out to surprise.

Anna-sensei: That was when I saw Makiko but that was Rena’s graduation concert. If I had got even with Makiko, it would’ve looked inappropriate. Then, I came across Makiko backstage, I thought “I will settle it here”

- Wow! “settle it here” !?

Anna-sensei: I just wanted it to be a bit more interesting. *laugh*

CP: Fufufu

- You also wrote on Twitter “confront directly”

Anna-sensei: Because fans really enjoyed it.

- That’s why you wrote the solution on New Year stage “overthrow Anna!”, right?

CP: Yes. *smile*

Anna-sensei: Was there something like that?

CP: If I wrote something like “moving forward” it would be too boring. When I was thinking what I should write, I talked with Manager-san and finally decided to write that but…

Anna-sensei: But what?

CP: My hand was shaken that I almost couldn’t write it down *laugh*

- You must be afraid to really write it down.

Anna-sensei: About “overthrow Anna!”, can you explain the details how you plan to do it?

CP: *obviously inarticulate* th..this, “overthrow” is…

Anna-sensei: Um, what is it?

CP: it…is “victory”

Anna-sensei: How do you think you will gain it?

CP: er…about that…how will I gain it?

- It may not be good to know. *laugh*

CP: What I wrote was only for fun…

Anna-sensei: No, no, you must be clear. I accepted your challenge.

CP: It’s not like that. That time, I never thought that there would be an interview like this. I was just kidding, really.

Anna-sensei: I also want to try saying “I lost”

- Sensei, saying “I lost” would mean getting “overthrown”, right?

CP: Right.

- For example, if you could make Sensei feel “recently, SKE48 is superb” or “Makiko is doing a great job as captain”, would this mean “overthrow”?

Anna-sensei: That’s what I hope for.

- Moreover, if Makiko-san order “Sokutatsu Nama” (Beer brand that Makiko was chosen as presenter) and deliver to Anna-sensei’s home…

Anna-sensei: That’s how to completely “overthrow Anna” *laugh*

Why Saito Makiko?

- Next, let’s talk about Makiko’s goals and visions as captain.

CP: Of course, there are a lot.

Anna-sensei: Oh! I want to hear it.

CP: For SKE48, it’s got insecure since members graduated one after another. It’s quite complicated. Moreover, captain was changed and new system began for the first time in 2 years. I don’t know what it means that they chose me. Why not 1st gen like Jurina-san or Masana-san?

- Have you found the answer yet?

CP: I still haven’t got the clear answer but maybe, I just think too much to be in charge. Though I wanted to think “it’s just a title” but they announced in such a huge venue. It’s heavy to endure.

- seems like you are still confused. Then, what about visions?

CP: Surely, great performance is SKE48’s image. However, even though seniors have set the goal to catch up and surpass AKB48, but now it’s blurry either it’s good or bad.

- Just when did you feel it?

CP: These past 3-4 years. But, I don’t know what I should do with this blurriness. I don’t know what is the right answer. When I entered (in 2009), there was only Team S. The Team S at that time gave out professional image. It’s like “they are incredible, I wanna be great like them” I think THAT is the true SKE48.

- In other words, you want that image to be more distinctive, right?

CP: That’s right. There are tons of groups in and outside this country. Now, there are also 46 groups. Only this image that I don’t want it to fade away. Members have changed, surroundings have changed, so it’s very difficult to make it. Most members who were there at that time are left. If people say “all that has already passed” then, it can’t be helped.

- About the current SKE48, Anna-sensei, what do you think?

Anna-sensei: Not long ago, I still taught them dancing for the single. But, when lesson’s over, I didn’t talk with them much. For 1st gen, I taught them by myself since the beginning. So, they remember my words, for example, “You need to it through. If there were no other sister groups, how’d you want to compete with AKB48. The answer to this question will lead you the way” “To surpass AKB48, what do you need to do…isn’t it heading fully forward in this road?” something like that. I said these things and taught them for 2 weeks. If they wanted to be good enough to stand on stage within that short period, they needed to squeeze out their power. Anyways, that’s the only thing I could do for them. Would they still go all out? or would they still head towards the same goal after that? I couldn’t say.

- There were only 1st gen when you teach them, right?

Anna-sensei: What I want to hear from Makiko is “How everybody wants SKE48 to be now”. To be honest, when I was watching them on TV, I couldn’t get the point at all. I’m afraid that, for people, they couldn’t tell now which is AKB48, which is SKE48. SKE48 is the group that every member built up. I really want to know how everyone thinks about it, how do you want to shape this group. The future of this group depends on this. But, I still can’t see it right now.

CP: …*listen quietly*

Anna-sensei: I wonder if you guys ever think about this.

- Makiko-san, how would you say?

CP: The ones on TV were only Senbatsu. I wasn’t there so I didn’t know how everybody thinks. Leaving TV program aside, our performance on stage is also different from the past. It may come from different motivation of each member. However, is SKE48 pride only at the theater? Everyone also thinks about it but um…

Anna-sensei: How is SKE48 at the theater?

CP: The current Team E stage is “Te wo tsunatsuginagara” I could only talk (to members) about performance, so I want to talk out all of it.

Anna-sensei: Then, everybody follows when Makiko says or everybody knows themselves well, which is it?

CP: Even when I’m not there, everybody does it well.

Anna-sensei: Then, what about in concert?

CP: In concert, there are a lot of positions and movements that we need to remember, how we should show to audience…just doing these things right is exhausting enough, especially for Kenkyusei.

Anna-sensei: That’s so? There are lots of details that need to be perfect, right? And what entity are you to SKE48?

CP: um…how should I put it?

Anna-sensei: No matter what, I think since you are chosen as captain, it must mean something to SKE48. For example, you can fulfill something that SKE48 lacks or you can lead everyone the way. If it’s like that, what do you have right now? What makes you confident that you would never lose to anyone?

CP: …*tears fall down*

Anna-sensei: For example, though you have never got into Senbatsu but you didn’t run away. You stay and continue to try your best. Or maybe, it’s your love for the group. I can’t always be watching you and can’t go to theater every day, but from what fans and you told me, I think that might be the reason you are chosen. Because no matter what position you are in, you do it without hesitation. This is the meaning of choosing you as captain.

CP: …*quiet*

- After hearing what Anna-sensei said, what do you think?

CP: …I’m not good enough to say I’m right. I’m not confident that I can be model for anyone. So, when I was chosen as captain, I was very worried. Now, I still can’t say that I understand SKE48 wholly. I also don’t know what is the right answer. But, since I got title “Captain”, I have been thinking if I was asked “What do you want to do from now on?”, I would just lightly answer something nice.

Anna-sensei: That depends on how you express yourself. The most important is that you need to show your true self. You are captain, not superman. No one chose you to be captain just because they expect that you can do everything. “Though I want to improve the group, but I don’t know what to do” just you said that is good. I’m a teacher so I could speak rulingly, but Makiko is one of the members, you couldn’t speak like that. I think everyone pays more attention to your actions than words. No matter how nice you talk, no matter members listen to you or not, if only Makiko can show them your true self, do it with all your might, show them that you do your best for the sake of this group, it will work out well. If you say “I can do it” just to be cool, it won’t reach people regardless of your facial expression. Strengths or weaknesses, just show them. The thing is will you be able to dedicate your heart and soul to it. It’s okay if you don’t feel confident. Anyone would feel worry being like you. Makiko who is always worried is gorgeous.

CP: …yes. (soft voice)

Anna-sensei: Anyway! Don’t run away! Never do nothing just because you have no confidence. It’s because you have no confidence, you have to do something.

CP: …yes. (soft voice)

Dare to show yourself

- Many days have passed since you became captain. Have you talked with members yet?

CP: I realized that I’ve been forced myself to smile, to be friendly with everyone all along.

- Why is that?

CP: The first job since I became captain was Great East Japan earthquake memorial stage on Mar.11. We hold this stage every year. It’s quite important for us but I still felt that some members didn’t take it seriously. For example, we normally do manicure and hairdressing before stage. That’s not a problem, but on Mar.11, there were a lot more important things to do, weren’t it? Some of them didn’t realize about this. If this happened in the past, I would warn them. But I’m captain now. If I am too fussy with them, they may think “are you trying to be captain”. I was afraid that they would look at me like that. I also have script to remember that day, so I just let go. At that moment, I realized that it must be difficult for me to take care all members.

- In the end, you didn’t say what you wanted to say. You may feel useless, right?

CP: It’s a huge problem to me. I couldn’t figure out. After stage ended, I cried out at the side of the stage. My tears fell nonstop…I heard someone said “eh? Where’s Makiko?” that’s when I knew they were searching for me. But my body wouldn’t move, I sat there at the no.1 side of stage for an hour. *laugh*

- You sat there at the no.1 all along? *laugh*

CP: That time, I can profoundly feel my weakness. I was so worried that I didn’t know if works will go smoothly after that.

- Did any member know about you crying?

CP: No. If they didn’t ask staff-san, I don’t think they would know. Actually, I don’t want juniors to see me like that.

Anna-sensei: You are also a member yet you have to be responsible to lead others. It’s quite tough and lonely. I was also like that. When I was a member of SUPER MONKEY’S yet I had to teach others. To teach them, I had to perfect myself first. There were a lot of pressure. And I’m also afraid whether they will hate me. However, we have to be brave to be hated, otherwise, you can’t change anything. Nowadays, I’m also like that. Scolding others is like hurting myself at the same time. But, for having said these harsh words, isn’t it because of love?

CP: …(listen quietly)

Anna-sensei: Up until now, before entering practice room, I still have to tell myself “If these kids can grow, it’s okay if they hate me” besides, if only you show your exertion, they will understand someday. If you do it halfway, you’d better not start. Since you already decided to do, you have to do it completely. Although I’m 44 years old now, but I’m still shaken when I scold someone. But Makiko, you are only at this age, you became captain. It must be painful to scold others. Even Takamina, she also feels painful. Everybody is the same. But! No matter what, you have to do it. Even me, sometimes when I thought of something before bed, I also regret “I shouldn’t have said that”

CP: …(listen quietly)

Anna-sensei: From now, Makiko will grow little by little to be the true captain, right? You need to learn these things by yourself. You might fall, you might cry, you might be discouraged, 1 step forward 3 steps backward, but doing it again and again will help Makiko learns to be captain. It’s normal to fail at first, but you have to concentrate.

CP: …Yes.

Anna-sensei: The more you overcome difficulties, the more you grow. When Makiko dare to take captain position, your performance, your expression, the meaning of your existence in this group have all changed. Not many people got this opportunity. Even if you fail, just doing your best is enough! Even if you fall, just getting up on your feet is enough! If you already went all out but still can’t get it, that’s not your fault, it’s the people who chose you.

- That’s right because you are chosen.

Anna-sensei: Besides, if they see Makiko’s effort, there will surely be comrades who are willing to walk with you.

- There already are, right? You also went for dinner with members. Did you guys talk about the group?

CP: Um…come to think of it, maybe not. I don’t know how to talk with them about this. I’m afraid our opinions are much different…

Anna-sensei: That’s because Makiko still haven’t show your true self. Just speak up your mind straightforward, that kid will understand. When it becomes like this, everyone would think “Makiko puts this much effort, I have to support her” Only this way that can draw more and more people to come together with you. The real fight hasn’t started yet. Everyone only communicates in general, not to get hated.

The important thing in this world

- Let’s get back to previous topic, how did you feel when they announce you as captain?

CP: …

- Looked like you were so happy that you cried.

CP: No…it’s not like that. Since Sae-san announced graduation in last December, there were expectation from every direction. Yet, I felt very deeply that I can’t take it. The moment I heard announcement, I thought “ahh it became true” my legs got weak.

- I’m sorry, seems like I misunderstood. *laugh*

Anna-sensei: However, you still don’t feel that you are captain, right? I can tell just by looking at your face today.

CP: …I’m sorry *smile*

Anna-sensei: You still haven’t reach the point that “I will do it!” Makiko, I’m telling you something, don’t think about “can or cannot”, think “will or will not” Right now, you don’t feel “I will do it!” at all. Throw the fear away, it’s okay even if you fail. You have to decide whether you will or will not do it. From my experience, if only we think “I will do it no matter what!”, you can do it. If you keep “I will do it no matter what!” in mind, but still do nothing. That’s failure. If only you overcome your mind, you can do it. When I look you in the eye, I still can’t find that determination. You haven’t looked me in the eye and said “I will change SKE48!” yet, right?

CP: …*keep her head down*

Anna-sensei: If you don’t have that kind of determination, you will be troubled. You will be in anxiety all the time.

- Then, let’s take this chance to turn on the switch. I think members and fans are by your side.

CP: Um…

Anna-sensei: Makiko, why do you keep being reluctant like that?

- There’s still something you keep inside and you haven’t spoken up yet, right? This is the chance.

Anna-sensei: you are thinking of graduation? Is that it?

CP: I “thought” about it. I wonder how long can I be SKE48. It’s always in my head.

Anna-sensei: From what I feel when I look at you now, you are still too young to struggle outside SKE48.

Anna-sensei: If you want to be on your own, you have to grab every opportunity. You must have motivation and courage, or else, you will fail. In this industry, although capability is important, in the very end, it’s faith. No matter what happens, you need to be optimistic. That’s what we call strength. With this thought, the current Makiko is still weak, but you’ve already got the chance to be stronger, haven’t you? Being a captain, getting to do more things, these experiences will be your asset for the next step. You may feel tired with works nowadays, it’s natural. But, there are precious things that will help you grow hiding in these works. Just like Akimoto Sayaka and Sae-chan, “even if it’s complicated, even if surroundings don’t give me favor, I still try my best” so, let’s take it as practice. No matter when Makiko decide to leave, the thing you must have from now on is not dancing skill but living a life.

Interviewer: But isn’t someone like Oda Sakura pretty great already? Kamata Koji (recording director for MM and S/mileage): You’re right: she is talented. But her sense of rhythm is a bit lacking. That’s something we always tax her with improving on. According to Tsunku��’s theory on rhythm, there are some people who can feel those fine details in a rhythm and those who can’t. When it comes to recording, Sayashi is someone who’s good with rhythm. She listens to the demo vocal properly and she understands it, so she can also sing it well. And, though I don’t want to praise her, the same goes for Sato Masaki. Interviewer: You don’t want to praise her… (laughs) Kamata: I think Sato has talent. There’s something about her skill that reminds me of Fujimoto Miki — it’s like she gently keeps the rhythm going via her singing. It must come to her naturally — I think she herself thinks she’s just doing her best, like everyone else. Interviewer: So at the end of the day: people with a good sense of rhythm become good singers. Kamata: At the risk of being misunderstood… Tone deafness is something you can cure. However, rhythm is about daily diligence. You have to be aware of it constantly. I think even my sense of rhythm has improved, having been working as a recording director for the past 15 years. My awareness towards rhythm is completely different now than it was back then. That’s why this job is still a learning experience for me.

During [Mogi and Nomura's] photoshoot, a shadow crept into the studio. Peeping in during her break was Mukaichi Mion. She was the one who was eager for Nomura's swimsuit gravure but it was with Mion's partner in the ‘Mogion’ combi. Mion let out a "Woo~~" as she stared and claimed, "It's still nice though! Amazing!! But Mogi-san is mine... I’m looking forward to next month’s photoshoot too." And with a fearless smile, Mion headed to her own shoot.

Note: Mogi is currently doing a series of monthly gravure shoots for AKB48 Shinbun along with a different member for each issue. The September issue featured Mogi with Nomura Nao.

Flash Special Interview (October 2016)

This was your first time shooting by the sea, how was it? Since I’m from an inland prefecture, there isn’t an ocean’s edge and I’ve never been to it on a trip. So this was the first time I could experience a sea house, it was a lot of fun. I also want to have a photoshoot in the ocean but I actually can’t swim (lol).

This time, we’re shooting a gravure commemorating the sousenkyo senbatsu. In the sousenkyo, you impressively ranked 13th. It was the third time I participated in the sousenkyo but it was the first time I cried. I ranked 29th during the preliminary results. At handshake meetings, my fans encouraged me by telling me, “It’s absolutely okay.” I thought I probably had a 10% chance to enter senbatsu, there was hope within my heart that I could at least enter undergirls. That’s why I was really happy when my name was called.

Your speech was also well received. Really? I was so nervous. Since my goal was senbatsu, I prepared a bit by thinking about my speech but when the event started, everything left my head. By the time it was the senbatsu announcement, I was happy but the other side of me was extremely worried about what I should say during my speech.

You’re put in a leading position in AKB48 more and more. Has anything changed? Although I’ve been chosen for the senbatsu numerous times now, I was concerned if it was really okay for me to continue being chosen. But I’ve grown to feel confident in my position. At the same time, there’s a sense of urgency to become a person who can contribute to AKB48 earnestly. Even at concerts, I began thinking about how can we make it exciting. I think it’s no good if I only follow my seniors.

Do you have any goals for the future? First of all, I want to have an active role in the group that is worthy of 13th place. I was extremely pleased when I entered senbatsu together with (Okada) Nana-san and (Takahashi) Juri-san who are the same age as me. But as a group, I want to work with members from the same era and have activities that can gain hako oshis. I also hope AKB48 is able to continue on as the number one group. By the way, when Shimada Shuhei-san read my palm at the beginning of the year on AKBINGO, I was ranked the 3rd luckiest in the entire group. So in the future, I’d like to do my best so that I don’t lose this momentum.

Manga Action Interview (November 2016)

In the show “Kyabasuka Gakuen”, you changed roles from a yankee in “Majisuka Gakuen” into a hostess. That’s right. I’ve certainly seen plenty of hostess clubs in dramas but of course, it’s a completely unknown world to me. Just doing the gestures one by one is difficult. Up until now, I’ve mostly only acted with my members, so it’s fresh to have different male actors playing the role of customers each episode. Acting as a yankee and hostess are both unexpected roles for an idol, it’s tough but it’s fun. I hope those who are watching enjoy the gap [between idol and hostess].

The latest single “High Tension” was released on November 16th, the center Paruru-san (Shimazaki Haruka) will graduate this year, do you have any memories with Paruru-san? During “Kuchibiru ni Be My Baby”, Paruru-san took a break due to her poor physical condition. I was able to appear as her under (substitute) throughout the promotions at the time. After that, I met Paruru-san for the first time in a while and she kindly said to me, “Thank you for appearing even though it was also hard on you” which made me very glad. Since my physical condition was also poor back then, she was worried about me. I think I was able to grow precisely because of that time [as Paruru’s under].

This year, you served as AKB48’s center for “Tsubasa wa Iranai”, leaped to 13th place during the sousenkyo and entered the senbatsu. What is your next goal? Hmm, well, I’d like to release a photobook during my teens. I have a little over a year left until I turn 20 years old. I’m really not good with the cold, so I’d like to go and shoot it in a warm place like a southern island.

What do you do these days for comfort whenever you’re busy? I eat. Recently, I no longer have any likes or dislikes. I originally had a very unbalanced diet, there were a lot of things that I couldn’t eat during lunch when I was an elementary school student. I hated cheese and mayonnaise but now I’ve grown to love both. And understanding the taste of fish has turned me into an adult (lol). I also like to fiddle with my phone while I’m having a bath. I put it in a Ziploc bag and do things like update my SNS (lol).

「What can I do for someone?」Project which is continued by AKB48 since 2011 for 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake Relief Support Charity Activities. Iwata, who was the only disaster victim has appeared in many media as the face of the activity.

It’s been 6 years since the earthquake.

「For me it was like recent memories. The clock has stopped since that day for many people in Tohoku, including me. Even when I lived in Tokyo, I feel that. Even more in the disaster areas now, from the people who work for reconstruction」

Conflict drawn by the gap of idol and earthquake victim

March 11th, 2011,「The day of turning point of life」. Iwata who was a 6th grade student became a victim in an apartment in Sendai city, Miyagi prefecture.

She stayed in her father’s car overnight, and then with her family she went to the shelter and then stayed to her relative’s place.

3 weeks after the earthquake, there was AKB Research Student audition.

She was at loss of whether she should go for it or not, but the words from her mother 「Become AKB, when you returned to your hometown, you will be its strength」supported her, so she went to Tokyo. She was accepted as a result.

Busy day in Tokyo. She didn’t went to her elementary school’s graduation ceremony because it was postponed by the earthquake, and she couldn’t say goodbye to her friends.

She advanced to the path of idol while having the thoughts of her hometown. However, wearing glittering clothes, showered by lights, and the gap of being an earthquake victim have caught her in self-disgust.

The people of my hometown surely didn’t care of my activities. It’s painful when I thought of that.

The first visit to disaster area that was scary

Year 2011, AKB’s disaster area visit to Rikuzentakata City, by AKS

On November 13th, 2011, Iwata visited the disaster area for the first time as AKB in Rikuzentakata City, Iwate Prefecture.

「It was scary. I thought it was weird if I were told that I left my hometown, what kind of face should I show when I meet everyone?」

The first stage in the affected area. In the middle of cold rain of November, the children, without umbrellas, were waiting for the appearance of AKB while getting soaked.

「There are people who didn’t care about our activities at that time, of course there were things that they didn’t understand, but with their glittering eyes, those children were waiting. People who have waited for hours, even if it’s just 1 person, I thought that I have no choice but to continue」

The Miracle Pine Tree in Rikuzentakata is an unforgettable scenery until now. She was told by AKB Producer Akimoto Yasushi 「Be the Pine Tree of AKB」.

I have to stand strong. That’s what she thought.

Criticism of reconstruction support activities

Iwata, who was the only victim of the earthquake, became the face of the reconstruction support in AKB.

She participated as one of the singing member of the year 2012′s Great East Japan Earthquake charity song 「Flowers will Bloom」. She also sang the solo version for the coupling.

As a navigator of NHK 「Karen’s Reconstruction Calendar」, she told the daily life of the people who lived in the disaster area that was not covered by the news.

Until now, disaster area visits exceeded 80 times.

Although she went around the disaster area as AKB, 3 years since the earthquake, the reconstruction didn't progressed, people who watched the stage became less and less. People who came also took a step back.

「I thought that was because there were people that think: I don’t want to hear songs. I couldn’t care less about dreams and hopes. In the middle of that, we held our microphone and came to see them, it became a selling of one-sided kindness. Other than me who was the victim of the disaster, the members who were not affected by the disaster has also been thinking about it many times」

There was some time where the activity received bashing on the internet.

「At those days I worked desperately, I couldn’t care less about what I was told. It's not the time to care about those things. That was the most important thing」

「When I think about it now, I didn’t really feel the pain of my heart because I was so desperate. I entered when I was 12 years old, I was doing well in that kind of situation」

Do the activities as an entertainer save the disaster area? Iwata answered the question while choosing the words.

「If there are people who can become energy, there are also people who cannot. There are also people who have no interest in entertainers. We believed in that and there is no other choice but to continue」

The biggest thing to think about was celebrities’ power to send message through their blogs and other means. And make (people of) their surroundings smile.

「Even for me, there are people who look forward to take pictures together, there are shops that are decorated with (my) signs. I was pleased by that. I’m happy to be a celebrity」

Iwata who was asked for comments about her connection to the earthquake, and has a slight gloomy image, was originally a person who is easily flattered. She was glad to appear in variety shows, but there are also conflict at the same time.

「I am connected to the earthquake. I was worried about what will happen if I got creamed, or did some reactions」

It was the smile of the people she met in the disaster area that saved her from her worries.

「There are also lots of shows in Miyagi, there are lots of people who watched. The kid who left Sendai has now been doing these kind of thing, it’s fine to laugh. 『How does scorpion (the one that was eaten in variety show) taste like?』 When I heard that, on the other hand, (I answered) it was a little bit complicated (LOL)』」

Things about herself are the second, the third. After all, she wants to go to meet the people of Tohoku. She’s been looking for what kind of things that she can do. She was enthusiastic.

Is it painful to work hard for the sake of Tohoku?

「Because it was the reason I worked hard. If there’s no earthquake, I might enter AKB as usual for less than a year. I think I would not be in this kind of world」

No matter how hard it is, no matter how much she wants to quit, she can do her best if she thinks about Tohoku.

「I have a reason to work hard, I have people that I want to protect, I have a place to return. I think those are things that make me happy. That’s why I didn’t think even once that it was painful to work hard for the sake of my hometown」

Graduated from AKB after enrolled for 5 years

Iwata graduated from AKB on March 2016. Turning point since joining 5 years ago. There were no basis (for the graduation), but she had this thought in herself.

「I didn’t overestimate myself, there were things left that I need to do, but I have devoted all my youth in AKB and support activities. Perhaps it’s time for me to work hard for myself」

Feeling that she has carried out that far, she finished her activities for 5 years since March 11th, 4 days later on March 15th she finished her activities as AKB with the graduation performance.

Messages from her mother were read in the performance. It was like this at the end of the sentence.

「We may be foolish parents (*oyabaka) , but you are truly the best daughter in the world」

Even though I left AKB, I haven’t changed my mind

Her old place AKB, on March 4th, visited disaster areas of Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima, and had reconstruction support live there. Seeing her peers went to visit the disaster area and thinking that she also wanted to go, she felt a little bit of pain.

However, now she works hard on the works in front of her, she wants to be an actress that could make the local people happy by just going there. She also thinks that she wants to work hard in the movies and videos that shows her hometown.

The desire to do work related to Tohoku also doesn’t change.

On March, she also served as a narrator in the documentary program 「High School Students who Connect Tohoku’s Future, Our Dreams」. During the recording, seeing the younger children working so hard, she lost of words.

Found a new goal which is photography

The current dream is not just being an actress.

Through blog and social media, she's thinking of sending messages of the current situation of the disaster areas, not only the light of the reconstruction, but also the parts in the shadow that haven’t progressed yet.

However, words can be often misunderstood. In such case, she thought that if it were picture, she could reflect the light of the present Tohoku as well as the shadow.

「There are also buildings that are purposely left after the earthquake. Putting what I want to express in a frame, uploading it, I’ll be happy if more people come to visit Tohoku」

She got 0 experience in photography. Now in order to learn about taking pictures, she was helped by her acquaintance who is a cameraman.

「Please allow me to learn, I asked. I’ll be happy if I can take pictures with good expressions. Of course Tohoku’s scenery is also included, but I also want to take pictures of the people who are working hard there」

To the future

Started from AKB, and then reconstruction support activities since 12 years old. She has devoted all her youth.

「I like my hometown. I like people in my hometown. I like the scenery of my hometown. I've been working hard so that one day the scenery will restore as soon as possible. That's why, now I am here」

Actress and photography, now, she’s heading for those 2 dreams. Beyond those dreams is her hometown.
