Ever since its inception in the mid-1950s the documenta has been a heavily political art exhibition: while the first edition in 1955 was seen as a demonstration of the artistic freedom in the west and featured artists ostracized by the Nazis it later also became a platform for political art and an artistic rapprochement between the two German states. But while the propagation of abstract art, the narrative of abstraction as a universal language and its instrumental use also at the documenta has long been known new research focused on the Nazi past of key documenta protagonists. It uncovered that almost half of the organizational team of the first documenta had been member of the NSDAP and in one way or another profited from it, e.g. Werner Haftmann as head of the first three editions. In 2022 the Deutsches Historisches Museum in Berlin in an exhibition shed light on the manifold political dimensions of the documenta, a meritorious undertaking that is supplemented with the present eponymous catalogue published by @prestelverlag: it joins numerous strands of recent documenta research and offers a very insightful perspective on the political aspects underlying the exhibition. These not only include the previously mentioned ones but also the inclusion of GDR art in later editions as well as the deliberate exclusion of Jewish artists in the first editions. The latter actively sought to reconnect Germany and the international art world as well as they functioned as platforms for the rehabilitation of art deemed „degenerate“ during the “Third Reich”.

“documenta - Politik und Kunst“ is an important and long overdue coming to terms with Germany’s most important art exhibition, its political dimensions and the early history of it. A thought-provoking read and hopefully only the beginning of a fundamental and critical analysis!

Not invited to show at Documenta 7 herself, Lawler created stationery with loopy quotes from the actual invitation letter Documenta curator Rudi Fuchs sent to artists requesting their participation. Her stationery was sold in a shop at Documenta organized by the Bronx-based art group Fashion Moda.

Seems they've got a special area in the library dealing with these books, providing information on them and also include a virtual reality tour of the Parthenon of Books. As far as I can tell this area is still active, at least it's listed for the central library.

Presentación de Ojos de Monte

Florencia Passarelli escribió un libro precioso, ilustrado por Virginia Galdon.

Lo presentaron oficialmente en un evento en el Museo de la Ciudad de Rosario y me convocaron para registrar lo que allí sucediera ♥

Hubo actividades lúdicas para la infancia (cuyo registro que no puedo mostrar aquí por cuestiones de privacidad) y sobre todo MUCHOS abrazos. Pero muchos!

Antisemitismus und Empathielosigkeit: Eine unendliche Geschichte aus Kassel

Nachdem ein vom Aufsichtsrat der documenta und Museum Fridericianum gGmbH bestimmter Personenkreis die neue Findungskommission zusammengestellt hatte, hatten wir zu diesen Personen recherchiert. Wir hielten es im Frühjahr 2023 jedoch nicht für angebracht, mit unseren Rechercheergebnissen an die Öffentlichkeit zu gehen, zu groß war unser Respekt vor der hochdekorierten Veteranin der IDF und renommierten Künstlerin Bracha L. Ettinger. Der am 7. Oktober 2023 von der Hamas vom Zaun gebrochene antisemitische Vernichtungskrieg gegen Israel verstörte verständlicherweise die in Tel Aviv lebende Künstlerin. Diese bat die Findungskommission ob der grauenhaften Ereignisse innezuhalten. Die Reaktion der Verantwortlichen ist bezeichnend.

Jonas Dörge hat für die Ruhrbarone dazu auf Grundlage unserer Recherchen den Vorgang kommentiert:

„Das Elend stellt sich nicht unbedingt darin dar, dass man mehr oder weniger „israelkritischen“ Ideologen eine Bühne bietet, sondern dass man das Kunstwerk dem Propagandastückchen der engagierten Kulturschaffenden geopfert hat. Und dazu gehört, dass man auf die Befindlichkeiten einer Israelin, die an der mörderischen Macht des Antisemitismus verzweifelt, scheißen kann. Egal, wie man Hoskotés Verfehlung einordnet, mit einem weiter so haben die Macher der Weltkunstausstellung jede Redlichkeit endgültig verspielt.“

DOQUMENTA presenta el Acervo de Cine Documental Queretano

El objetivo del proyecto será la conservación y construcción de la memoria sobre el desarrollo audiovisual de Querétaro

DOQUMENTA ha sido un espacio para exhibición y formación de públicos de cine documental, así como el desarrollo y estímulo a la producción en el Estado. Con el objetivo de fomentar la conservación y generación de información sobre el desarrollo audiovisual presenta el Acervo de Cine Documental de Querétaro.

Desde su creación, DOQUMENTA ha incorporado, invitado y convocado películas realizadas en Querétaro, a través de convocatorias universitarias, vínculos con escuelas y programas de producción, además de la creación de secciones locales en el Festival Intencional de Cine y Narrativas de No-Ficción, funciones especiales, giras estatales, actividades universitarias y también el rally de producción, realizado por primera ocasión en el 2021.

Con el estímulo del Instituto Mexicano de Cinematografía (IMCINE), a través del Apoyo a la Conformación y preservación de acervos cinematográficos del Fomento al Cine Mexicano (FOCINE) ahora se presenta este proyecto, cuyo objetivo de reconocer la importancia de preservar la memoria. Este será el primer acervo audiovisual formal en Querétaro que posibilitará la gestión de datos estadísticos sobre la producción audiovisual en el Estado, asi como de toda la región del bajío y otras zonas, como Guanajuato, San Luis Potosí, Michoacán, Hidalgo y Estado de México.

La creación de este acervo comenzará con la Colección DOQUMENTAMX, la cual estará integrada con los cortos documentales queretanos que han sido recibidos y exhibidos a lo largo de esta década. Será un aproximado de 90 películas las que la integren.

Como parte del acervo, se ha construido un sitio web que contendrá una base de datos para consulta pública. La intención es que este espacio digital contenga la información de las colecciones, para poder dar acceso al público a investigación, estadísticas, etc. De igual manera contará con la posibilidad de solicitud de visionados para su investigación, programación y exhibición en otros espacios.

Este año se lanzará la convocatoria para la conformación de la segunda colección, que lleva por título QUERÉTARO SIGLO XXI, en donde se convocarán a todos los títulos -sin importar el metraje- de documentales realizados en Querétaro desde el año 2000. El llamado será publicado en el sitio web del acervo y los interesados deberán llenar un formulario donde podrán también subir su película o indicarnos cómo obtener una copia de la misma.
