'I walk every day': New Brunswick outdoorsman proves age is just a number
It doesn’t matter the time of day or the weather conditions, Bill Mayo will find a way to keep moving.
“On a rainy day I have two machines in my apartment that I can get on and peddle and at night, if I watch TV, I can sit on a bicycle thing and watch TV,” he said.
Mayo also frequents local trails, the mall if he needs a change of scenery during bad weather, and around town.
Given his lifestyle and attitude, Mayo is proving that age really is just a number.
“I just forget I’m 90,” he laughed. “I walk every day, somewhere.”
His love of nature and being active started at a very young age. At just 10-years-old, Mayo would help his dad cut down and sell wood and they’d spend time together camping and on a fishing vessel.
Ever since, the outdoors is where Mayo likes to be.
“When I drove to Florida, I stopped at every village and asked people about trails and if it was interesting enough, I would go and do it,” he said.
“My wife would have to stay in the car though because she had trouble walking.”
After that, May says every trip turned into a week-long adventure to help ensure there would be enough time to explore.
From Sydney to P.E.I. to Florida, Mayo has decades worth of adventures. However, he doesn’t just lace up his hiking boots, he also helps build and maintain trails for other people to enjoy, including 10 kilometres of the Dobson Trail.
MAYO BRIDGE
He has also taken on projects that took a bit more team work, like the now Mayo Bridge.
“We used to cross brooks on the trail. You used to cut a big log or two logs, put them across the water, and that’s what you’d use for a bridge. So, one place every winter the ice took the trees out and we’d go back in the spring and the water’s up to here,” he said motioning to chest level.
Taking matters into his own hands, Mayo decided he was going to build a more permanent bridge out of rocks, logs and netting.
“The first year, beautiful – the logs were still there, so I said ‘good we’ve got it!’ Well the next year, the people down there, they clear-cut on the hill, so of course there’s nothing to stop the water. So we went in the first time and our bridge was gone,” he said.
Luckily, an engineer in Fredericton came to the rescue creating a steel bridge for the area that has been named Mayo’s Crossing.
42-KILOMETRE WALK
While age might have slowed his speed over the years, Mayo still has his sense of adventure and he won’t back down from a challenge.
On Saturday, he is taking on a 42-kilometre walk as part of the 40th anniversary for the Moncton Outdoor Enthusiasts Club. It starts at the Chocolate River Station in Riverview, N.B. and loops across both bridges. Each lap is seven kilometres long.
“I think Bill is pretty well an inspiration to everyone,” said event coordinator Julian Screawn.
“Just him being at the event itself will probably bring some others out. Like I said, he is an inspiration to many of the club members. I mean if you’re 90 years old and you can do 42 kilometres… if a 90-year-old can do it then you can.”
Mayo is the oldest member of the Outdoor Enthusiasts Club, but arguably one of the most dedicated.
“He had lost his license and he would still come to hikes,” said Screawn.
“He would walk to meeting points, which is about seven to eight kilometres and then he would do the hike, which would be anywhere from 10 to 12 kilometres. So basically, how can you say no to not getting out and exercising really.”
With nearly 200 members, the club is open to everyone and does regular hikes on the weekend. This year, it’s planning other events to celebrate 40 years, similar to the walk this weekend.
“A lot of people come out and they meet others and form their own groups, so it is a good way to socialize and also exercise at the same time and what could be better,” said Screawn.
If one group wasn’t enough, Mayo is also apart of the Dartmouth Volksmarch Club, which he says was started by his sister and her husband.
“I’m not trying to out race anybody anymore,” he said.
“I just do it at my pace and let them do their pace and I’ll just say, do what you can comfortably and stick with it.”
As for this weekend, he says he’s there’s no harm in trying to complete the entire 42-kilometre walk. The event starts at 9 a.m., but Mayo says he’s going to get a head start and should be hitting the trail by 8 a.m.
“The advice that I have is be active, but don’t over do it,” he said.
“Pick your norm that you can handle and do it every day if you can, that’s what I try to do.”

Flight Risk VI
Summary: An answer to the age old CM question, “who’s flying the plane?” And the story of a pilot and a profiler. Part VI: In which things are lost and found and borrowed.
Tumblr media
(Series Masterlist) ( Previous  |  Next )
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The case is of a vengeful Cinderella is closed, but as they prepare to head to the airport, Kate isn’t feeling so well. Rossi offers to drive with her to a pharmacy to pick up some saltines and Dramamine, and the rest of the team heads to the airport to wait. Reid spots Y/N chatting outside the plane with Dobson, and he instinctively starts towards her. She must see him out of the corner of her eye because she turns to greet him, but before either of them can say anything a strong hand finds his shoulder, holding him back.
“Hold there, Pretty Boy. I wanna hear the details of your Prince Charming moment back there,” Morgan says.
Y/N raises her eyebrows and he can feel his face flush. “There’s um, not much to say,” he stammers.
“Spence, come on, you were totally prince-like,” JJ laughs. “Kneeling down on one knee with a glass slipper and everything?”
“A glass slipper?” Y/N asks. JJ describes, in detail, how he played the part of the knight in shining armor at the cemetery to get Claire Dunbar to leave with them. He’s embarrassed through the whole tale, but by the time JJ gets down on one knee to kiss Morgan’s hand as he did the unsub’s, he’s sure his face is scarlet. Y/N is laughing along the entire time at his fellow agents’ melodramatic reenactment.
“Anyways, it was all very romantic. He totally swept her of her feet. The poor girl fell for him in a heartbeat,” JJ says. For a moment, Reid tries to discern what Y/N is thinking. Her face is unreadable other than a bemused smile. Her body language tells him nothing. But he can’t help but wonder – hearing about his heroics in the field, would she be jealous? Hearing how he played Prince Charming for Claire and kissed her hand. Then he wonders if he wants her to be. Is he curious because there’s a part of him that wants her to want him? Is he secretly hoping that she’d feel slighted by any hint of romance towards someone else? And if he is hoping for that, what does that mean?
But Y/N just says, “I sure would have liked to see that.”
“Next time we’ll get it on camera,” Morgan teases, ruffling Reid’s hair. He swats his friend’s hand away.
“You know, I love a good fairytale,” Y/N says, turning to him.
“Well this one was more Grimm than Disney,” he admits, trying to push the memories of the men Claire killed out of his mind. The story is over now. No more dragons to slay. Kate and Rossi return seconds later and it’s time to go.
Y/N follows Captain Dobson up the steps of the jet, and he follows close behind her. Lost in his thoughts, he nearly loses his balance at the top of the stairs. Y/N immediately reaches a hand out to steady him. Her hand is soft around his. He holds tight, both to maintain his balance and to keep a connection to her. All his life he’s been uncoordinated, but he’s willing to fall over his own feet a million times if it means having the chance to finally hold her hand. With her help, he ascends to the top step, finally making it onto the jet. It strikes him, this sudden reversal of roles. Only a few hours ago he was offering his hand to a distressed damsel to lead her away, using his words to woo her. But now Y/N is the one coming to his rescue. She is steady. Confident. She doesn’t need anyone to save her. If she did, he’d be there in a heartbeat. But she’s saving him. Little by little. Maybe they’re saving each other. One thing is for sure – she sweeps him of his feet without even trying. Knocks him out with a single smile. Quite literally puts his head in the clouds. And that’s better than any fairytale.
----------------------------------------------
She’s turning the pages of Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, so taken by the story that she jumps when he calls her name. She turns to see him standing there, offering an awkward half-wave. Y/N can’t help but smile at the sight of him. His cardigans and ties are becoming familiar. He always looks more like a librarian or a professor than a special agent. Not that she minds one bit. The clothes suit him well, though at this point she’s convinced he’d look good in just about anything.”
“Is it good?” he asks, nodding at the book.
“Extremely. The prose is incredible and the narration is really unique. It manages to make a story so painful sound so beautiful. You can borrow it when I’m done if you’d like. I’m sure you’d finish it in a single flight.”
“It’s quite likely,” he laughs.
“So I hear we’re off to New Mexico,” she says. The flight is long enough that she could easily lend him the book now, but she knows the trip there will be spent reviewing case files and preparing for the work to come.
“Yeah, there’s five women dead already.” Spencer sits beside her on the bench. “The unsub seems quite advanced. It’s not looking pretty.”
“We’ve got to find you at least one pretty thing to see on these cases,” she says. It doesn’t seem right for him to travel across the country and return with nothing but memories of police stations and a handful of nightmares. She still hates the idea of ferrying him and his team to and from monsters. To and from danger.
He raises his eyebrows. “Oh? Like that coffee shop you found for us last weekend?”
She laughs at his pointed accusation. When they made plans she had insisted on visiting a new pop-up that Yeeqin had shown her on Instagram. The drinks were dreamlike pieces of art with cotton candy fluff, impeccable latte art, ombre iced teas, and donuts carefully placed over the rims of mugs. The line to order had been long, and the shop was crowded with people taking photos in front of the murals and installations throughout the shop. When they finally got their drinks, they were both disappointed to find they were more watery than the sad coffee found in police stations and tiny airports. The coffee didn’t taste nearly as good as it looked, especially for the pretty penny it had cost.
“Okay, okay,” she giggles. “You have a point. I will refrain from taking food recommendations from social media influencers in the future. But I’m sure I can find a nice bookstore or a garden or something worth paying a quick visit to in Santa Fe.” She pulls out her phone for a quick search. “Oh, like this bookstore! It’s called Collected Works and it’s lovely.” Suddenly she can smell coffee and the sharp spice of aftershave. Spencer is leaning over to look at her screen. She turns her head towards him and he shifts his gaze from the phone to her and she realizes how incredibly close he is. There’s only inches between them and when his hazel eyes find hers any words she had die on her lips. Lovely, is all she can think.
After mere seconds that seem to slip into eternity, she quickly breaks eye contact and looks down at her hands, her heart thudding loudly in her ears. “Um, but, uh, maybe there’s somewhere else…” she says.
“Oh my god, Reid, you are not going to believe what I saw this morning!” A cheerful voice calls out from across the hanger and Spencer practically leaps up from the bench. The voice is familiar somehow. A brightly-dressed woman is heading towards them surprisingly fast considering the height of her stilettos. Her shockingly orange dress matches the bright hue of her lipstick and the flowers in her hair. When she reaches them, her eyes widen, and a neon grin spreads across her face as she regards Y/N. “Oh! You have to be Y/N! You look just like Morgan described!”
Y/N’s eyes flicker to Spencer who gestures towards the newcomer. “Y/N, this is Penelope Garcia. Our technical analyst.”
Garcia holds out a well-manicured hand. “Technical analyst, internet goddess, and oracle of all knowledge. But tomato, tomahto.” Y/N stands to shake her hand. “JJ was right, you’re totally cute.”
Out of the corner of her eye she sees Spencer turn tomato red. She chooses not to question it and instead asks, “Why haven’t I met you before?”
“Well, usually when these crimefighters are flying all over to world to do their crimefighting thing, I stay hunkered down in my Quantico batcave ready to scour the interwebs for their every demand. But our creep of the week is particularly creepy – he’s hacking into his victims computers to stalk them and erasing almost any trace he was there. So I’m coming along for the ride to try and pull any data I can from their devices.” She grimaces. “Believe me I would much rather be staying put and calling them from my office.”
That explains why her voice is so familiar, she’s heard it in the background a million times as the team prepares for a case in the cabin.
“Well Captain Dobson and I will do our best to make the trip a little more comfortable. We restocked the galley and deep cleaned this weekend, so Geff should be in perfect form.”
“Oh my gosh I still love that our jet has a name. Geff is so cute. I’m never calling it the jet again.”
Y/N smiles. “Right? I feel like planes have a personality all their own. They deserve a name, too!”
“I feel the same way! I name all the things in my life, but none quite compares to Esther. She’s an orange 1975 Cadillac Eldorado and the one true love of my life.”
“An Eldorado? She must be gorgeous.”
“She absolutely is, and she drives like a dream. You should totally come take her for a spin sometime! If you can handle Geff you can totally handle Esther.”
“Hey!” Spencer protests. “You wouldn’t let me drive your car!”
Garcia rolls her eyes in mock annoyance. “See, calling her a car is exactly why I don’t let you drive her! Besides, you drove us to Comic-Con and your maneuverability did not exactly inspire confidence.”
“Well if you ever need a co-pilot for a convention, let me know,” Y/N offers.
“You’re into the con crowd?” Garcia asks.
“Please, I’m a total geek,” she laughs. “If it’s got a flying craft of any kind I’m in. Firefly, LOST, Doctor Who, Star Wars – you name it.”
“I totally love you,” Garcia declares, linking her arm through Y/N’s. “I love her!” she tells Spencer.
“Well I hope you have a little love left for me, Baby Girl,” Morgan teases, walking up behind them.
“Always, sugar,” Garcia throws back. She let’s go of Y/N’s arm but says, “We have to talk later.”
“Of course,” Y/N assures her, and she hurries over to catch up with Morgan.
“I didn’t realize you liked all those things,” Spencer says.
“Of course,” she laughs. “I guess it just never came up in conversation. We were too busy with books and stories. But I’m guessing you’re also a fan?”
He nods. “Although I’ve never seen LOST. Is it good?”
“Is it good?” she asks, incredulous. “It’s incredible. It revolutionized television. And it’s right up your alley. Mystery, psychology, recurrent numbers . When this case is over we are absolutely watching it together.” She only realizes after she says it that she’s practically inviting him over to her place. Or inviting herself over to his. Is that too much? They’ve been spending more and more time together, and she has yet to stop enjoying his company. If she’s being honest, she’s always looking for excuses to see him again.
“I would love to,” he says immediately. Relief washes over her. So it is okay. It’s okay that she wants more of these moments with him, that she’s trying to commit of these little conversations to memory for fear they’ll slip away and she’ll forget the butterflies she feels when he looks at her. And when Arthur calls her away to ready Geff for takeoff, the smell of coffee and aftershave lingers in her in mind long after she walks away from him.
----------------------------------------------
Three days later, the case is solved. The unsub is in custody. The victim is in the hospital with their family, where she will hopefully make a full recovery with time and with therapy. The Santa Fe sun is sweltering though. The team sits inside a small room at the little airport. The air conditioner is on full blast and everyone is sipping on water to stay cool. All of them are exhausted, and Reid wants nothing more than to take a long nap on the plane. Even Garcia is quiet. It’s a relief when Captain Dobson appears to inform them that the jet is ready for takeoff. They board Geff and settle down into chairs and couches, ready for well-deserved rest.
As soon as he does so, Reid realizes he’s left his book in the air-conditioned room. He quickly hurries back down the stairs and inside, grabbing the paperback that sits on the table where he left it. As he walks back out, he spots Y/N, standing at a locker in the hangar. She waves at him a with a smile.
“How was the case?” she asks.
“It ended as well as it could have,” he says. “But it was long. I think we’re all pretty tired.”
“I’m sure this heat isn’t helping. It’s worn me out. I’ve been putting off getting in uniform as long as I could.” She wears black pants and a short-sleeved white button-down, but the rest of her uniform is still in the locker. “So the missing woman is okay?”
Reid explains that she is, but he’s hardly aware of the words he’s saying. His focus is on her fingers as she buttons the top of her collar and ties her black tie with a careful and practiced knot. It’s looks far nicer than any of his slapdash crooked knots. She slips her blazer over her shoulders and adjusts the cuffs. He’s seen her in these clothes so many times before but he’s never realized before how good she looks in uniform. Or at least, he’s never let himself think it. It fits her well, tailored perfectly to her body. Reid is absolutely entranced as she buttons the front of her blazer, the little gold pair of wings shining above her pocket. He can’t explain why he suddenly finds this incredibly attractive, but when she puts her cap on and turns to smile at him, he completely loses track of any thoughts in his head.
It’s only when she closes the locker and says, “Let’s get out of here,” that he regains his ability to form coherent sentences.
“Wait,” he says. She does. Her cap is ever so slightly off-kilter. He reaches out to straighten it for her. As he does so, it catches a strand of her hair, and he brushes it out of the way. The gesture feels so intimate, and she stares at him the entire time. “There,” he says. “Perfect.”
“Thanks, Doctor.” The smile she gives him is different from the one she wore seconds ago. It’s softer somehow, and if he were to melt right now it wouldn’t be the result of the Santa Fe sun. They climb back into the plane. Y/N disappears into the cockpit. He puts his book back into his bag and then walks to the jet galley to grab another cup of water. Garcia joins him. As she pours herself a cup of coffee she says, “I had no idea you liked a girl in uniform.”
Reid nearly chokes on his water. “I – wait – what?”
“Oh come on, I saw you staring at Y/N.  The way you were looking at her? Ooh you are in deep, loverboy.”
“It’s – it’s not like that,” he sputters. “Not at all. We’re just – she – she’s my friend. That’s it.” Garcia quirks an unconvinced eyebrow. Reid sighs. “Look, even if I liked her, it would never work out. She’s…” There aren’t enough words to follow that adequately describe her. “Her. And I’m me. And besides, I’m pretty sure there are rules. Even if I felt that way…” He couldn’t. He can’t.
Garcia’s mischievous grin fades. “Reid, do you really think that-”
“Please, Garcia.”
She bites her lip and grabs her coffee. “Hey,” she says quietly. “No one else was paying attention. They didn’t see. And I’m not going to say anything.” She takes a step past him. “I just wish–” But she doesn’t finish the sentence. Evidently deciding against voicing her wish, Garcia returns to her seat. Reid prepares to do the same, only to notice the book sitting beside the coffee maker. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close. With a little note that says, you can give it back when I see you for LOST.
In spite of himself, in spite of all the things he can’t and shouldn’t do, he smiles. He can have this. Sharing words and stories with her, and wondering which ones resonated with her when she read them. He picks up the book and sits back down just as Dobson’s voice comes through the speaker  to ask them to ask them to fasten their seatbelts and secure all loose items. Reid opens the book. That nap can wait until he gets home.

love/hate songs
Since 8tracks is messed up and playmoss is gonna disappear and Spotify doesn't have many songs, I’m posting some of my playlists here. This is a list of songs about love/hate relationships for pairings. Enemies to lovers, tsundere personalities, hero/villain couplings, opposites attract, loving someone you know you shouldn't. This list is several years old so the songs are older and kinda ‘scene.’
Major trigger warnings for the lyrics of these songs. Some songs have violent lyrics. This playlist romanticizes conflict.

Dobson is lecturing someone who gives examples of strong female characters who are not Mary Sues, at least I think that was his point, and Dobson almost blows a gasket. Because HE DOESN’T LIKE PEOPLE MENTIONING THESE CHARACTERS. The guy mentions Ripley (misspelled ‘Ridley’, he made a lot of typos) and Sarah Connor. And Dobson gets ANGRY. He AGREES they’re strong female characters, but HATES when people MENTION them. In fact, Dobson’s initial reaction to the mentioning of the two characters is telling the guy to ‘shut up’. Why? The ONLY reason he gives is because they’re ‘30 years old’ and are 'the first go-to’ examples of SFC’s for some people. Why this bothers him so much he doesn’t explain. So…a character’s AGE matters for this? Does Dobson even KNOW how old Wonder Woman and Scarlet Witch, who he was just TALKING about in the SAME THREAD, are? But to me, the icing is when Dobson gets AUTHORITATIVE and declares 'my patience is wearing thin, chose your next words carefully’. Oh my God, what the FUCK?? Or what, you’ll BLOCK the guy, Dobson? Oh no. So here’s Dobson getting his jollies trying to look superior, when he’s not even a court jester. Also, Dobson is stood up by the guy who explains most people care how a character is WRITTEN, not their GENDER, and people generally don’t LIKE poorly written characters, PERIOD. See, this is why some people call Dobson a gatekeeper; only talk about the female characters HE likes; you must ONLY appreciate THEM. I saved this in case Dobson hides/deletes it. Oh and feel free to use this block any way you find fit, THOAD. I sure thought it was worth mentioning.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“There’s actually a bit extra I want to add to this as well, though you covered everything else really well. Take a look at his 4th point: “reducing strong female characters to one’s that just act like men…” So because Ripley and Sarah don’t act like girly-girls, they don’t count as good female protagonists, Dobson? Like, I know I’ve pointed out that you seem to be obsessed with portraying women in the most stereotypical girly way possible(aka the Vivian James comics), but like…damn. Do you seriously hate men so much that anyone acting even the most remotely “masculine” are trash in your eyes???? Anon is right, it’s pretty clear you hate Ripley and Sarah Connor because they’re not “girly enough for you. And THAT’S the perfect example of someone being a sexist fuck, Dobson. YOU are the exact thing you claim to hate” -THOAD
THIS IS YOUR GAME
Name: Eliana Felix Age: Twenty Two Class Year: Fifth Year Position: Goalkeeper, #4 Hometown: Columbus, Ohio
THIS IS YOUR MOMENT
TW: suicide, self harm
She grew up in a trailer park, and when she’d walk down the dusty lane to her school bus stop there was always a car waiting, black and shiny and extremely out of place. It wasn’t trying to be subtle, Eliana and her mother were meant to know that they were being watched. Powerful men will do a lot to keep their secrets. And Eliana? She was the secret.
He was a governor, and Eliana and her mother were mistakes—mistakes that needed to be watched and contained, so they couldn’t threaten his career and his picture-perfect family, his real family. They lived half lives: given enough money each month to keep them quiet and afloat, but barely more than that. And they were always aware of the pulled strings controlling their movements: any man that Eliana’s mother tried to date seemed to always leave, quietly and suddenly, for one reason or another, and Eliana and her mother both knew better than to think it was coincidence. But still her father liked to think that he could buy Eliana, that he could show up in their trailer with a new toy and a smile and that she would be glad to see him. She wasn’t, and she let him know it.
But her mother, always sunny and unflappable, would always entreat her angry daughter: Smile, Eliana, it makes the world a better place. That was her mother: grace under fire, always with a smile and a kind word, even when Eliana was sure that none could be found. Her mother smiled and kept smiling right up until the day that Eliana came home to find her slumped over the table in the trailer’s tiny kitchenette, body cold and with an empty bottle of pills at her elbow.
For all that he had driven her to it—if you asked Eliana—her mother’s suicide was the last thing that her father wanted, for it forced him to claim his illegitimate daughter and own up to his indiscretions. He resigned in the aftermath of the scandal, and Eliana packed up her belongings and moved from the trailer to his massive home, where his wife and her two half-sisters looked at her like she was something stuck to the bottom of their shoes, where they whispered that she—with her very existence—had ruined their lives. It was a lot of blame to lay at the feet of a twelve-year-old girl, especially one still reeling from the loss of her mother, and the loss of all that was familiar to her. Miraculously, it all seemed to avoid her father.
They never hurt her, not with their hands, at least. They merely acted as though she didn’t exist: her father’s wife never seemed to speak directly to her, her half-sisters got up and left every room that she entered. Out of them all, her father was the kindest, in a bumbling sort of way, but it was him that she hated the most, and so it was his kindness that she wanted the least, and so she made it a point to throw it in his face at every turn. But the ice she tread was thin: she knew they were just looking for a reason to get rid of her, and so she bit her tongue and did her best, even though it was years too late, to finally take her mother’s advice and smile. And she kept on smiling until she felt like it would kill her—and that’s when she found Exy. Her so-called family didn’t like the sport: too violent, too brutish, but when Eliana slammed the ball down the court she imagined it was one of their faces, and it put a little bit more force in her swing. And it made it easier to go back to that house at the end of every day, somehow both invisible and hated, and keep living her life.
Exy wasn’t the only outlet she found, however. It started small: first, when she fought to keep her silence at yet another offhandedly-cruel remark, she dug her fingers into a bruise left behind by a stray ball under the table, and the pain made it easier to hold her tongue. But it didn’t stop there: soon, she had razorblades stashed in her bedroom for when the marks left by Exy weren’t enough, and a growing series of red lines etched into her stomach that she tried hard to hide in the locker room. Her mother’s advice worked well then, too, she found: all she had to do was keep smiling, and no one seemed to notice that underneath that painted-on expression, she was a shell of her former self.
SEIZE IT WITH EVERYTHING YOU’VE GOT
A smile couldn’t cover what had already been in the newspapers, but for once that was a good thing: if Eliana was a modern-day Cinderella, with her dead mother and her evil step-and-half-family, then it figured that Coach Wymack—or maybe just the Foxes themselves—was her prince, ready to take her away. She signed the contract without hesitation, and counting down the days until she left for Palmetto made her father’s house easier to bear.
But a change in scenery, even if it was for the better, was not enough to break her out of well-worn habits, and a smile couldn’t hide the evidence of her self-harm from Team Nurse Abby Winfield when it came time for her freshman year physical. Abby told her that she wouldn’t tell Wymack, as long as Eliana agreed to talk about it with Team Psychiatrist Dr. Betsy Dobson, and Eliana smiled and agreed, lying through her teeth. Unwilling to change, or maybe just scared of trying, she resolved to run away that night even though she had nowhere to go, and she made it as far as the nearest bus station—but years of dealing with the Foxes have given the team staff uncanny intuition, and Abby was there waiting for her. She was there, too, when Eliana’s practiced smile finally failed her, giving way to tears she had long since denied herself. She returned to her dorm and to practices with most of the team none the wiser, but since that night Abby has been like a second mother to her, and sessions with Betsy have helped her greatly since her freshman year. In many ways, she’s still a contradiction: she reaches for a smile as a reflex only to realize that she doesn’t need to pretend anymore, only to realize that she doesn’t know who she wants to be when she isn’t pretending. With the past few years with the Foxes being some of the best of her life, her old reservoirs of anger and sadness are drying up, and she isn’t sure what is left underneath them. And her teammates often have to deal with her moodswings as she attempts to figure it out.
hey if you're still doing prompts, the time(s) someone outside of the team (or inside) mistakes aaron for andrew or the other way around?? thanks!! i love your writing!!
There should be some sort of rule, Aaron thinks, that identical twins have to avoid celebrity.
It was disarming enough to be a teenager the first time he saw his own face with nothing inside of it, like an indifferent stone likeness. Then Andrew went and got himself famous, made himself important to everyone (including Aaron). He stares out from magazine spreads with his middle finger up when Aaron goes through the checkout counter, and he follows him closely with his reputation.
He’s had patients bow out of the exam room when they heard their intern was ‘A. Minyard’. He’s had anger and relief flip toggles in his chest when he caved and bought a magazine, finding Andrew and Neil piled in Exy gear to promote a product. They looked uncommitted and severe except when they were jostled together and shot from the side, candid, staring.
It almost makes him miss the moments with the foxes when everything was as simple as watching Andrew’s face for the changes and catching the wave to the next game.
But it’s better to have the kind of work that he knows he does best, stockpiled for the rest of medical school and the rest of his life after that. It feels good to stretch on rubber gloves and distance himself from the worst sort of rot in the world.
It feels good for his feet to throb and his head to twist itself into knots, and to come home to Katelyn, who always tries to wait up for him and never can. She passes out with her legs over the armrest of their secondhand couch and her hair fanned over the cushions. He kisses her awake more often than not.
He goes for runs, sometimes, like he never did in college. It’s when his own reflection makes his neck prickle and he thinks, god, he’s here. He’s never not here. If you’re a twin you’re a member of a club, and you’re constantly in uniform.
He gets stopped on the street and asked for his autograph, and he feels comforted to know that his “piss off” is gentler than whatever Andrew would have said.
He sees his own face hoisted at pride, watches Andrew become half of a relationship that handcuffs exy to entire social movements, and it coaxes old fear into his blood. It takes some wrangling and undoing of rusted closed spigots before he realizes that he’s impressed, too.
He hates Neil out of habit. He watches the sun make new colours with Katelyn’s hair at 5 am. He puts his alarm on snooze just so he can lie there with her. He likes that his life is a can on a string, and somewhere, tossed out into another state, in a high-rise with blackout curtains and an orange cat, Andrew has the other can.
Aaron, Katelyn, Nicky and Erik all converge on Neil and Andrew after they win their way to the end of the season. It’s an overdue visit, Nicky says. We just need Neil to get us in the door, and we know Andrew will do whatever he wants.
Aaron’s conflicted enough about it that he calls Nicky from inside the city to lie about their flight being delayed. He paces circles around their motel room until Katelyn throws a pillow at him and he finally droops into sleep beside her.
It’s the longest he’s gone without seeing Andrew since he knew he existed. He didn’t think he would feel so relentlessly unfinished without him, but he doesn’t want to be finished the wrong way either. He’s terrified of it. He thinks about the keyed-up tension of a reunion where all the old hurt of Andrew-Aaron-Nicky and all the healing of Neil-Katelyn-Erik meet and clobber each other to death.
He gets up in the middle of the night before they’re all supposed to have brunch, and he wanders out into the crisp dark morning that’s trying to be born.
It’s quiet, with the city rolling over in its sleep and the streetlights humming for his attention. He doesn’t know where he’s going. Anywhere but the motel room where his thoughts are the towels cushioning breakable china, and he’s smothered in them. He’d rather risk breaking than be choked like that.
Aaron finds the comforting neon glow of a laundromat attached to a 24 hour convenience store, and he feels for the change in his pocket. Katelyn likes those Werther’s hard candies, and she always jokes that Aaron had better hurry up, because she’s already ready to be a grandmother.
He jingles the door open and finds an empty counter and a tiled white floor that’s clean in the middle but grimy in outlines at the shelves’ edges. There’s music spilling out of the back room, something with strings and crooning vocals. There’s a wedged open door to his right with rows of off-white washing machines just beyond it.
He steps in amongst the shelves like he’s trying to camouflage himself in the brush. He likes the feeling of being completely alone with a simple choice to be made. So much of his life is noise and crowds and decisions between bad and worse.
He scoops up a bag of candy that looks a bit curled and dusty, and he finds a bottle of painkillers in the next set of shelves. Andrew’s giving him a stomach ache. The closing distance between them hurts to think about.
He drops both of his products on the glass-sheathed front counter, its hundred lurid lottery tickets glittering beneath the surface. He nods at the woman that comes bustling out of the back, wiping her hands on the back of her skirt. Her face lights up at the sight of him, and she puts both hands on the counter, leaning forward familiarly.
“Already?”
He strains for a second, squinting, waiting for murky waters to settle. She chuckles when he stays silent, and waves a hand.
“Alright, alright. You’re in luck,” she says. She abandons her post, and veers around him to the chest freezer tucked between the counter and the door to the laundromat. She produces a quart of ice-cream and presses it into his hands. He jumps a little, but she doesn’t seem to notice.
“I’m just here for these,” he says firmly, dropping the ice-cream on the piece of counter farthest away from his purchases. She tuts at him. It’s all very surreal, like he’s trying to participate in a piece of very boring, very abstract improv.
“Nonsense.” She reaches under the counter and pops a package of cigarettes with the rest of his growing pile. “No partner today? He giving you a headache?” She gestures at the tylenol on the counter, smiling slyly.
Aaron’s head starts to find purchase and screw on the right way. “Partner,” he repeats.
The woman hums and punches in numbers on the till. “He’s probably out running already, is he?”
“Neil,” Aaron guesses, and the woman looks up at him, confused. Her eyes slide over him properly, surprisingly calculating where they’re set in amongst crows feet and wisps of mousy hair.
“Andrew,” she says calmly. “Is something wrong?”
Aaron sighs. “Aaron,” he corrects. “Andrew’s brother.”
“No,” she says, marvelling. Her hand goes to her chest. “Twins?” He nods. “That’s incredible. Do you know you act just like him?”
“You don’t know me,” he says stiffly. The idea of passing for Andrew even after he’s spoken to a person is completely disconcerting.
“I know your brother,” she says, near laughing, utterly un-offended. She’d have to be, if she knows Andrew. “He might want you to think that no one does, but you learn about people when they buy things from you twice a week. That boyfriend of his is a sweet talker.”
“Maybe we’re not talking about the same people,” Aaron says, frowning.
“You got many other identical siblings?”
He doesn’t answer, a little shellshocked at the thought of it, and she laughs.
“I guess you’re good on chocolate candyland then,” she says, handling the sweating ice-cream container onto the counter opposite.
“Unlike my brother, I want to keep my teeth,” Aaron says tersely, prodding at the cigarettes as he speaks until she takes those away too.
“He knows what he likes,” she says fondly, and Aaron can feel his own expression jerking around, trying to match his feelings. It’s not often that he gets mistaken for Andrew and feels uncomfortably like the worse option. It’s the same way he felt around Neil for most of their time at Palmetto: all the more disappointing for looking so much like something he actually cared about.
She rings up his original two items and stuffs them in a bag with a receipt before he can ask. “Will I be seeing more of you, mysterious twin?”
“Uh, no. Probably not. I don’t get many breaks.”
“From?”
“Med school,” he mutters, fidgeting uncomfortably when she smiles widely at him.
“So you’re the brains and Andrew’s the beauty, then?”
Aaron makes a disbelieving noise before he can tamp it down. “Definitely not.”
The woman hands him his bag, still smiling. “Say hello to your brother and his boy for me? Tell him I’m holding his favourite for him.” She taps the lid of the ice-cream.
Aaron nods stiffly. He can’t really picture Andrew frequenting this place to buy sweets from a bubbly shopkeeper, but he couldn’t have pictured him giving Dobson extravagant ornaments for christmas until he saw it happen.
He turns, plastic bag swinging from his fingers, and he feels her eyes on his back when he breaks out into the milky blue morning.
It feels a bit like waking up, walking outside. There’s some sort of twilight zone behind him, and something bright and sobering about the way the sky is more cream than coffee.
He thinks about Neil and Andrew having an entire life where they go running and buy trashy desserts and befriend middle-aged business owners and smoke together. It doesn’t make him angry anymore, that Andrew chose Neil. You never really choose the way a person means everything to you, you just live with it.
He’s relieved to find Katelyn awake when he gets back, curled around his side of the bed, arm outstretched to the door as soon as he’s inside of it. He trips over his shoes getting out of them and slips under the covers, rolling her on top of him all at once so she laughs, delighted.
“I had the weirdest dream,” she says, yawning into his neck.
“Yeah?” Aaron says. “Me too.”
 Cynthia Wingler, 78
Tumblr media
Cynthia Rector Wingler, our sweet Nana, peacefully went to her eternal home on January 3, 2020 at the, as she said, "older than dirt" age of 78.  She was surrounded by her "best buddies" in her home when her gentle spirit was released from her well-worn shell. She said, "If I knew I was gonna live this long I would've taken better care of myself." We're convinced she left before having to face another cold winter, "Oooshie!"
Cynthia was born to Kermit Rector and Louise Davis Rector on July 25, 1941 in Huntersville, NC. The reunion party has now begun with her parents and her humble big brother, Rev. Dean Rector and her best friend and identical twin sister, Sylvia Rector Caudill.
As a devoted and patient caregiver, Cynthia proudly served as an anesthetist for over 30 years at the Wilkes and surrounding area hospitals.  She left a lasting legacy of how grueling long hours can successfully be faced with the utmost safety and infectious laughter. She managed to do so while always looking her best with every hair in place.  Thanks, Louise Eller!
Her son, David Wingler (the "thorn and her rose"), and daughter-in-law, Anita Wingler (she always liked her best:) as well as her two granddaughters, Caitlin and Kaleigh Wingler (that she loved the absolute most) will miss the daily excuse to eat ice cream, "Yummy, yummy".  She also leaves behind: brother-in-law Delmar Caudill, nephew Terry Rector (wife Vickie), and niece Kim Rector as well as her great nieces, nephews, and friends.
A family graveside service will be held and a Celebration of Life event will take place when it's not so cold outside. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
In her memory, make someone laugh today (preferably in the most inappropriate time).  Laughter is the closest distance between two people.
JoAnn Blackburn, 76
 Georgia Faw, 90
Tumblr media
Mrs. Georgia Mae Faw, age 90 passed away surrounded by her loving family after an extended illness on January 1, 2020. Georgia was born on September 26, 1929 in Wilkes County to George Odell and Ella Mae Day Moore. She lived in the Brushy Mountain Community of Wilkes County her entire life with the exception of a short time when she and husband, John Winfred Faw, lived in Blowing Rock, NC when they first married.
Georgia was preceded in death by her parents, George "Odell" and Ella Moore, a brother, Paul Moore, a sister, Altha Lee McNeil, an infant brother, Howard, and her husband, John Winfred Faw.  Georgia is survived by her children, Anita Crunk (Sid) of Moravian Falls, NC, Richard Faw and longtime companion, LouAnn Thompson, of Kannapolis, NC. She is also survived by her granddaughters, Sarah Brame (Phillip) of Winston-Salem, NC, Emily Crunk of Concord, NC, Tamara Faw of Wilkesboro, NC, and Tesha Hammonds (Chris) of North Wilkesboro, NC, a brother, Jack Moore, of Yadkinville, NC, and 7 great grandchildren.
A native of Wilkes County, NC  she and her husband, John Winfred Faw, married on July 9, 1946 and were married 61 years prior to his death on September 22, 2007.  She would often joke that her age was the only lie she ever told since John was her sweetheart throughout his time serving in World War II and they got married as soon as he was discharged from the army, going to York, SC to elope when she was 16 years old.  They lived for a time in Blowing Rock shortly after they were married but came back to Wilkes County to build their home in the 1950s. Georgia wanted children more than anything and God blessed her with two, a son and daughter.
Georgia wanted to be a stay-at-home mom when her children were young but, upon her youngest child starting school at Wilkesboro  Elementary School, Georgia began employment in the Wilkesboro School Cafeteria and worked there throughout the entire time her children were in school. Since cooking for others was the highlight of her life, she began work at the Northwestern Bank Cafeteria after her youngest child graduated from high school. When the bank cafeteria closed, she then began work at the Cottage House Restaurant and ended her employment years at Lowes Midtown Plaza in the deli.  She left public employment to babysit her daughter's two children which Georgia always said was the best job she ever had. Since John and Georgia's home was always the place for her children's friends to "hang out" when they were young, Georgia enjoyed the same with her grandchildren and had some of their friends who stayed with her as well.
Georgia was an active member of New Hope Baptist Church in the Brushy Mountain Community as long as her health allowed.  She loved attending church and her church family was important to her. Most importantly, she loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and served him in many ways over her lifetime from playing the autoharp with her father playing guitar in her younger days to teaching Sunday school, working with Vacation Bible School, working with the Women's Missionary Union, helping to prepare meals and chaperoning youth trips, among other things.
With two heart attacks in the summer of 2016 started the decline of her health and she lived at home with assistance until July 2018 when she went to Villages of Wilkes Traditional Living. There she made friends who will always be dear to the heart of her family.
Funeral Services were January 5, at New Hope Baptist Church in the Brushy Mtn. Community with Rev. Michael Blevins, Rev. Jonah Parker, and Rev. Scott Church officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family request memorials be made to Wake Forest Baptist Health Hospice. 126 Executive Drive, Suite 110, Wilkesboro, N.C. 28697 or New Hope Baptist Church,  9134 Brushy Mtn. Road, Moravian Falls, N.C. 28654.
37th annual ringette tournament returns, bringing together hundreds of Maritime athletes
Bringing together athletes of all ages and from all over the Maritimes, ringette players flooded to the ice for the 37th annual Riverview-Dieppe Ringette tournament this weekend.
“This is one of the tournaments that everyone looks forward to all year,” said Kelly Cormier, president of the Riverview Ringette Association.
“We seed our teams so you always seem to have competitive games and you get to play teams from different provinces that you don’t get to play all year.”
“It’s always kind of like the wrap-up to our year.”
Returning after a two-year break, this year’s tournament saw 91 teams from New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, around 1,300 athletes and 177 games over the course of four days.
Although the competition is an important element during the tournament, organizers say the friendships that come out of the sport are a big part of it.
“It’s fun to see some of the teams, you know, after a big game getting together -- both teams on the ice, getting some pictures together and sometimes you see some dances on the ice with both teams,” said Vicky Deveau, president of the Dieppe Ringette Association.
“It’s a sport based on friendship and fun, so it’s a team sport most and foremost,” she said.
The four-day tournament saw athletes of all ages ranging from as young as four years old to adults.
“I just like it because it’s my favourite sport that I ever liked when I was growing up,” said 8-year-old Khloe Helpard, who just came off the ice after a win.
Standing beside her teammate and friend, Kali Nickerson, the two young girls said they plan to stick with the sport.
“When I was little, my aunt played it and I would always go watch her and I really liked it and I tried it and now I’ve been doing it since I was four,” said Nickerson.
Also during the tournament, officials hosted a “Come Try Ringette” event designed to give kids a chance to try the game and maybe sign up for next year.
Deveau says it’s hard to compete with hockey because it’s “Canada’s sport.”
“We really have to push hard to have parents and kids know that there is a sport that exists -- an on-ice sport -- that’s comparable to hockey, but no contact, more based on friendship,” she said, adding that events like “Come Try Ringette” are critical to recruitment.
Around 11 kids took part in the event in Riverview on Saturday morning and the Memramcook Association also hosted an event Saturday afternoon.
“We’re always trying to grow the sport and we see the camaraderie with the girls and the friendships they develop at four years old even,” said Cormier.
Deveau added that the retention rate of Ringette is high, making it easy to keep athletes interested once they get a taste.
“It’s really fun, entertaining and you get exercise,” said 9-year-old Ella Belanger-Birt, who has been playing ringette for three years now.
Although she enjoys stick-checking and getting goals, she says she’s also made friends since joining the team.
“I made a bunch of my team this year,” she said. “Last year I didn’t make a bunch, but this year I got to know my team really well.”
The games took place at both the Bryon Dobson arena in Riverview and the new Uniplex in Dieppe.
The tournament wraps up Sunday at 5:15 p.m.
THIS IS YOUR GAME
Name: Eliana Felix Age: Twenty Two Class Year: Fifth Year Position: Goalkeeper, #4 Hometown: Columbus, Ohio
THIS IS YOUR MOMENT
TW: suicide, self harm
She grew up in a trailer park, and when she’d walk down the dusty lane to her school bus stop there was always a car waiting, black and shiny and extremely out of place. It wasn’t trying to be subtle, Eliana and her mother were meant to know that they were being watched. Powerful men will do a lot to keep their secrets. And Eliana? She was the secret.
He was a governor, and Eliana and her mother were mistakes—mistakes that needed to be watched and contained, so they couldn’t threaten his career and his picture-perfect family, his real family. They lived half lives: given enough money each month to keep them quiet and afloat, but barely more than that. And they were always aware of the pulled strings controlling their movements: any man that Eliana’s mother tried to date seemed to always leave, quietly and suddenly, for one reason or another. They both knew better than to think it was coincidence. But still her father liked to think that he could buy Eliana, that he could show up in their trailer with a new toy and a smile and that she would be glad to see him. She wasn’t, and she let him know it.
But her mother, always sunny and unflappable, would always entreat her angry daughter: smile, Eliana, it makes the world a better place. That was her mother: grace under fire, always with a smile and a kind word, even when Eliana was sure that none could be found. Her mother smiled: until the day that Eliana came home to find her slumped over the table in the trailer’s tiny kitchenette, body cold and with an empty bottle of pills at her elbow.
For all that he had driven her to it—if you asked Eliana—her mother’s suicide was the last thing that her father wanted, for it forced him to claim his illegitimate daughter and own up to his indiscretions. He resigned in the aftermath of the scandal, and Eliana packed up her belongings and moved from the trailer to his massive home, where his wife and her two half-sisters looked at her like she was something stuck to the bottom of their shoes, where they whispered that she—with her very existence—had ruined their lives. It was a lot of blame to lay at the feet of a twelve-year-old girl. Miraculously, it all seemed to avoid her father.
They never hurt her, not with their hands, at least. They merely acted as though she didn’t exist: her father’s wife never seemed to speak directly to her, her half-sisters got up and left every room that she entered. Out of them all, her father was the kindest, in a bumbling sort of way, but it was him that she hated the most, and so it was his kindness that she wanted the least, and so she made it a point to throw it in his face at every turn. But the ice she tread was thin: she knew they were just looking for a reason to get rid of her, and so she bit her tongue and did her best—years too late—to finally take her mother’s advice and smile. And she kept on smiling until she felt like it would kill her—and that’s when she found Exy. Her so-called family didn’t like the sport: too violent, too brutish, but when Eliana slammed the ball down the court she imagined it was one of their faces, and it put a little bit more force in her swing.
Exy wasn’t the only outlet she found, however. It started small: first, when she fought to keep her silence at yet another offhandedly-cruel remark, she dug her fingers into a bruise left behind by a stray ball under the table, and the pain made it easier to hold her tongue. But it didn’t stop there: soon, she had razorblades stashed in her bedroom for when the marks left by Exy weren’t enough, and a growing series of red lines etched into her stomach that she tried hard to hide in the locker room. Her mother’s advice worked well then, too, she found: all she had to do was keep smiling, and no one seemed to notice that underneath that painted-on expression, she was a shell of her former self.
SEIZE IT WITH EVERYTHING YOU’VE GOT
A smile couldn’t cover what had already been in the newspapers, but for once that was a good thing: if Eliana was a modern-day Cinderella, with her dead mother and her evil step-and-half-family, then it figured that Coach Wymack—or maybe just the Foxes themselves—was her prince, ready to take her away. She signed the contract without hesitation, and counting down the days until she left for Palmetto made her father’s house easier to bear.
But a change in scenery, even if it was for the better, was not enough to break her out of well-worn habits, and a smile couldn’t hide the evidence of her self-harm from Abby Winfield when it came time for her freshman year physical. Abby told her that she wouldn’t tell Wymack, as long as Eliana agreed to talk about it with Dr. Dobson, and Eliana smiled and agreed, lying through her teeth. Unwilling to change, or maybe just scared of trying, she resolved to run away that night, and made it as far as the nearest bus station—but years of dealing with the Foxes have given the team staff uncanny intuition, and Abby was there waiting for her. She was there, too, when Eliana’s practiced smile finally failed her, giving way to tears she had long since denied herself. She returned to her dorm and to practices with most of the team none the wiser, but since that night Abby has been like a second mother to her, and sessions with Betsy have helped her greatly since her freshman year. In many ways, she’s still a contradiction: she reaches for a smile as a reflex only to realize that she doesn’t need to pretend anymore. But with the past few years with the being Foxes some of the best of her life, her old reservoirs of anger and sadness are drying up, and she isn’t sure what is left underneath them. And her teammates often have to deal with her moodswings as she attempts to figure it out.
Ramblings: Updates on Price, Eichel, Pacioretty; Nilsson Traded; Looking Ahead to 2019 – January 3
  Alex Ovechkin is turning down the opportunity to play in this year’s All Star Game, opting instead to just take the week to rest. With the rules the league put in place years ago, that means Ovechkin will have to miss a game either directly before or directly after the ASG itself. Given the playoff run last year, his age, and the team’s expectations for another deep run this year, I can’t really blame him. He’s given us some of the best All Star Game moments over the last decade, he’s earned a weekend off.
*
Minor trade:
  #Canucks have acquired Mike McKenna (@MikeMcKenna56), Tom Pyatt & 2019 6th round draft pick from the Senators, in exchange for Anders Nilsson & Darren Archibald. https://t.co/12mOFoG2x9
— Vancouver Canucks (@Canucks) January 2, 2019
  I say it’s a minor trade but this should lead to a call-up of Thatcher Demko at some point, so it could be a major deal in that sense. Something to monitor.
*
There was no Jack Eichel at Sabres practice and afterwards the coach says he’s still being evaluated medically. There won’t be an update until their next gameday, so owners should prepare for Eichel to miss at least the next game Thursday night against Florida.
*
Max Pacioretty was skating on the third line at practice for Vegas, giving a pretty good indication that Brandon Pirri, still on the second line, will be staying. I mean, the guy’s a goal-per-game in his Vegas career. If that doesn’t give him an extended look in the NHL, I’m not sure what will.
*
No change in Corey Crawford’s status according to ‘Hawks coach Jeremy Colliton. I suppose no chance is better than worsening, but in the leagues where I have Crawford on my roster, I’m operating as if he won’t return this year. This is a scary situation. Let’s just hope he comes out of this ok as a person, let alone return to the ice.
*
Speaking of goaltender injuries, Carey Price was taken off the injured reserve by the Habs, meaning he should be good to go for their next game. Get him off your fantasy IR lists.
*
The NHL All-Star Game rosters were announced. Keep in mind there will still be a fan vote to come and every team needs at least one representative. Here they are:
  Thoughts/Complaints?
*
We had a huge upset at the World Juniors yesterday as Switzerland defeated Sweden 2-0 in their quarter-final matchup. A team that has had relegation concerns in recent history defeated a gold medal contender. And the thing is, it wasn’t one of the typical upsets where it’s a couple fluke shots and a goalie standing on his head that were the difference. It was basically an even game. That’s a huge credit to the Swiss.
*
It was quite the game between Finland and Canada as the Canadians held a 1-0 most of the game but the Finns tied it up with under a minute left. It had been the Mikey DiPietro show to that point as he had made several key saves for Canada but Eeli Tolvanen had the look of a guy destined to score. He took the shot that redirected in off of Aleksi Heopniemi to tie.
Finland won it a little halfway through the overtime period following a wild overtime. Canada had a penalty shot, and Noah Dobson had an open net goal on his stick, before his stick broke. Finland went the other way and got another deflected goal. Just a crazy, crazy overtime period.
*
The next game following a four-point outing, Johnny Gaudreau managed another four-point night in Detroit on Wednesday night. He had a goal and three assists, Elias Lindholm had a goal and two assists, while Sean Monahan had just one of each the lazy bum. That makes 21 points over the last two games for the top line, and Lindholm has set a career-high with 47 points. There’s half a season left.
*
Kris Letang had a goal and an assist to go with four blocked shots in Pittsburgh’s 7-2 stomping of the Rangers. That gives him points in five straight and 35 in 38 games this year. This pace would give him a career-high, topping the 67 points he had a few years ago. Guentzel, Crosby, Malkin, and Simon all had a goal and an assist as well.
*
In the hours following his All-Star Game selection, Elias Pettersson tallied a hat trick for Vancouver in their 4-3 overtime win against Ottawa. That pushes him past 20 goals, giving him 22 and 20 assists this year. He’s shooting about 27 percent, but even half that and he’d have 30 points in 37 games as a rookie on a bad team. Truly a special first-year player we’re watching right now.
*
Well New Year’s is behind us, as is the holiday season, it’s time to look ahead to 2019. It could be a very tumultuous year for the NHL as though the collective bargaining agreement doesn’t expire for a few years, both the players and owners can opt out of the current CBA in September. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, we could be about eight months away from our next NHL lockout. Good times.
But let’s not focus on the negative right now. Let’s focus on the positives. I want to go through a list of players I’m excited for in 2019, whether it be the second half of the 2018-19 campaign or the first half of the 2019-2020 season.
  Mark Stone
This year’s free agent crop is one absolutely loaded with talent. Aside from Stone, names like Erik Karlsson, Sergei Bobrovsky, Artemi Panarin, Matt Duchene, Joe Pavelski, and Jeff Skinner top the list, and that’s discounting guys like Alex Edler and Jordan Eberle. But Stone is one of the few players I suspect will be on the move at or before the trade deadline, and that means there’s a lot of interest in the future of Mark Stone both for the balance of this season and next year.
Let’s set aside the balance of this year for a second. One reason Stone’s UFA contract should be fascinating is that he’s truly one of the best wingers on the planet: According to Corsica’s wins above replacement model, Stone is top-25 in the league in a per-82 games basis since the start of the 2016 season. The only wingers ranked ahead of him are Nikita Kucherov, Alex Ovechkin, Patrik Laine, David Pastrnak, Taylor Hall, Vladimir Tarasenko, Jeff Skinner, TJ Oshie, Kyle Palmieri, Brad Marchand, and Rickard Rakell. That puts him somewhere near the top-10 wingers, and he will be a free agent. But do other general managers view him as such? Are there enough GMs who view him as such that there will be a bidding war? He has 105 points in his last 98 games so his offence has started to show through over the last couple seasons, too.
Stone may not be a coveted fantasy asset like Marchand or Tarasenko but he’s similar in real-world talent. He should see north of $8-million a year. How much further will depend on how general managers value him which is, in a nerdy-ish kind of way, exciting.
  Erik Brannstrom
I thought there would be a chance that Brannstrom would crack the Vegas roster coming out of camp, especially with the early-season suspension to defenceman Nate Schmidt. But he didn’t, and they sent him to the AHL to start the 2018-19 year. As a 19-year old defenceman in the AHL, Brannstrom has put up 20 points in 24 games. It surely seems that this will be his first and last year in the AHL.
Brannstrom has the look of a player ready to be a great puck-mover in the NHL and he’s proving this in the AHL. I suppose one issue would be is that if he starts the year in the NHL next season, he’ll still be behind guys like Schmidt, Shea Theodore, and Colin Miller. All the same, there should be a lot of reason for excitement and he’ll be a guy firmly on my radar for rookie and keeper drafts when September roll around.
  Vladimir Tarasenko
Even with 33 goals and 66 points in 2017-18, it was seen as a down year for Tarasenko. He had been battling through injuries and the St. Louis power play didn’t do him any favours, but some (present company included) were excited for a turnaround for the 2018-19 season. Things haven’t gone as planned as he has just 11 goals and 22 points in 37 games. It’s been a brutal first half for him.
It’s also been a brutal first half for the Blues as they find themselves tied for last in the NHL (as of Wednesday afternoon) with the Ottawa Senators. The team making its way to the playoffs seems like a far-fetched idea. What if Tarasenko doesn’t turn his season around in the second half? We’re talking about a guy who had established himself as one of the top wingers in the league (see: write-up on Stone) over a three-year span and then will have had back-to-back poor seasons on a team that missed the playoffs. What does management do?
It seems unfathomable to trade an elite talent like Tarasenko coming off a bad year (or two) while secured to a very team-friendly contract. Then again, we thought the same thing about Taylor Hall. I’m excited to see what Tank does in the second-half of the 2018-19 season, but more importantly, what his future holds in 2019-2020 and beyond.
  Morgan Frost
I’ll be honest, I hadn’t watched much of Morgan Frost before this year’s World Juniors. I don’t watch much junior hockey and without some NHL games, he just wasn’t on my radar. This year’s World Juniors has changed that.
Frost tore up the OHL last year and is doing so again this year. Though he’s not big by any means (he’s listed as 6’0”, 185 pounds but that seems generous on both counts) he doesn’t seem to have any problem going to the dirty areas to use his hands and quickness to make plays in traffic, which can draw coverage and leave teammates open. That kind of ability is coveted because not only can he create plays, but he can create plays will creating space for line mates. That’s how you score goals in the new era of the NHL. Whether he can do that in the NHL rather than the OHL remains to be seen, but that he can do it now bodes well for the future.
With the way the NHL plays these days, worrying about size is a fool’s errand. It’s all about speed, skill, and quick decisions. Frost has all those. If the Flyers decide to use him on the wing, he could find himself in the top-6 right out of the gate next season. He’s another player I will be targeting heavily in rookie and keeper drafts.
CANTLON: NHL DRAFT NIGHT - FIRST ROUND
Tumblr media
BY: Gerry Cantlon, Howlings HARTFORD, CT - The New York Rangers made three first round selections in Dallas in Round One of a made for TV 2018 NHL Entry Draft. It was just the fifth time in Rangers history that they had multiple first round picks. The remaining rounds will be conducted Saturday starting at 11 am (NHL Network). None of these picks are likely to see Hartford any time soon. The Rangers' first pick, Russian right winger, Vitali Kravtsov, was a bit out of the box. There were other higher-rated options waiting to be snatched. Among them was another top scoring forward, the BC-bound, Oliver Wahlstrom. He was selected by the Islanders in the eleventh slot. Also on the board were defensemen Evan Bouchard (Edmonton) and Noah Dobson (Islanders 12th pick). With their highest pick at ninth, the Rangers tabbed the lefty shooting, Kravtsov, who at age 18, stands at 6’4 and weighs 185 lbs.  Kravtsov is from Traktor Chelyabinsk (Russia-KHL). Kravtsov was the second Russian taken in the Top Ten picks. The Carolina Hurricanes took right winger, Andrei Svechnikov. Kravtsov's regular season numbers with the big club weren’t eye popping. He tallied four goals and seven points in 35 games, but he was a boy playing in a men’s league. His post season numbers however were excellent and very well may be a greater indicator of his talent. He put up 11 points (6 goals - 5 assists) in 16 KHL post season games. Playing against his peers with Chelmet Chelyabinsk (Russia-VHL), Kravtsov tallied seven points with four goals in nine games. In one game in the Russian MHL Junior League with Belye Medvedi, he popped in a goal and had three points. Kravtsov is eligible for the CHL Import Draft to be held next week. He has one year left on his Russian contract. If he plays in the KHL, he could only play in Hartford once his Russian season end under the current CBA. One caveat could be similar to the one with Filip Chytil last year. He played with the Pack as an 18-year-old in part because a formal transfer agreement with the Czech Hockey Federation exists while one does NOT exist with Russia. Kravtsov could play in Hartford if an agreement between the Rangers and Traktor Chelyabinsk could be worked out on his Russian contract. Kravtsov did earn the KHL's Alexei Cherepanov Rookie of the Year Award. Cherepanov, of course, was a Rangers first round pick (17th overall) in 2007. He died tragically at a KHL game on October 13, 2008 while with Avangard Omsk. His team and linemate was one-time Ranger, Jaromir Jagr, who was right next to him on the bench with what was called an undiagnosed heart ailment. Subsequent investigations showed the possibility of blood doping, though it was later stated doctors were treating a heart condition that never showed up in the Rangers pre-draft medical evaluation. The Rangers successfully argued that since he was never under contract with the Rangers they were awarded a compensatory draft pick in the second round in the 2009 Draft. That ruling is now known as, "The Cherepanov Rule." The rule is that if a player was selected and should pass away, the team drafting that player will receive a compensatory draft pick.
The second first round pick was an 18-year-old defenseman who has lots of room to grow into. K’Andre Miller from Minnesota is 6’4 195 lb. He played the last two years for the US Development Team program in the USHL. He played international competition for the US U-17 and U-18 teams. Miller is a left-handed shot who played 22 games this season for the USHL squad. He tallied four goals and 12 assists and is a big, punishing hitter. Later, while with the U-18 squad, Miller played 58 games and had nine goals and 29 points. Miller has played the equivalent of an NHL regular season schedule. The U-18 team garnered a silver medal at the IIHF U-18 World Championships. Miller will be heading to the Big 10, where he will play for the University of Wisconsin Badgers program that's coached by former Ranger, Tony Granato. Miller was selected three years ago in the WHL bantam draft by the Saskatoon Blades in the 9th round, 177th overall. He was two sport (football & hockey) athlete at Minnetonka High. The Rangers thought enough of Miller to move up from the 26th pick to 22nd and gave up their 26th and 48th pick to get him.
The last pick is a 17-year-old, right-handed shooting defenseman. His name is Nils Lundkvist and he's from Lulea HF of the Swedish Hockey League. He went 28th overall. Lundkvist is 5’11 and just 172 pounds. He played on Lulea’s J-20 team. In 26 games, Lundkvist had three goals and 14 points and was voted best defenseman. He also played with the SHL club for 29 games scoring two goals and had five points. He was 16 for most of the season playing against men. He played on Sweden’s U-18 team that won the bronze medal at the IIHF U-18. championships. All three players are eligible for their national World Junior Championship squads. Expect to see them at the tourney which will be held in Vancouver, and Victoria, BC starting December 26 on Canada's Boxing Day. The aforementioned four sets of Rangers dual first round draft picks were interesting parts of Ranger history. In 1971, Steve Vickers, who had a solid Rangers career playing in 698 games and scoring 241 goals, registered 340 assists (586 points), and the highly combustible, the late Steve Durbano. He never played a game for the Rangers and was traded to St. Louis, but in the words of the late great Ranger broadcaster, Bill “Big Whistle” Chadwick,“ speaking of Durbano he said, "He was suspended in every league he ever played in." The words came during his wild fight with Nick Fotiu at the Garden in 1979 when he was on his second tour with the Blues. It set off a major bench clearing melee after a hat trick goal was scored and he exited the ice surface by bending over and mooning the MSG crowd. In 1972, Al Blanchard, who never played a game with the Rangers but played in the AHL with Providence and Springfield, and Bob MacMillan, who played 22 games with the Rangers, but would have a nice career with St. Louis, Atlanta/Calgary Flames, the Colorado Rockies/New Jersey Devils and Chicago, but not the Rangers. He is presently an amateur scout with Calgary. In 1977 they took Lucien DeBlois and Ron Duguay. They played well in New York. Two years later went the team went to the Stanley Cup Finals against the Montreal Canadiens where they lost in five games. The Rangers passed on Mike Bossy who would become one of the greatest scoring right wings in NHL history who helped the New York Islanders win four consecutive Stanley Cups. The last set of multiple first round picks came in 1999 at the draft in Boston. The picks that year were Pavel Brendl and Jamie Lundmark. Brendl never played in New York. His lack of conditioning and inflated ego impaled his career in North America. He played in just 77 NHL games with four different teams none of whom were named Rangers. After a stellar junior year with Calgary (WHL), Brendl was assigned to the Wolf Pack for the post season of their Calder Cup winning spring. He ended up being sent home after two games when he tried to instruct head coach John Paddock on how to run the team’s powerplay during practice. Brendl played in Europe last season after taking a year off due to a medical condition. He's rostered to the HC Arlanda Swedish who play in the first division. Lundmark played in 114 games posting 11-19-30 with the Rangers. He had 295 NHL games in total. He played parts of his time with Calgary, Phoenix (nee Arizona) and LA. While with the Wolf Pack, Lundmark played 165 games with 50 goals 68 assists and 118 points Lundmark retired this season after a six year career with Klagenfurter AC in the Austrian Elite League. The first 19 years of the NHL Draft were held in Montreal. 1985 was the first year that it wasn’t. That year the draft was held in Toronto. The first time it was held in the US was in Detroit in 1987. HOCKEY NEWS Late Thursday, Rangers GM, Jeff Gorton, confirmed that Adam Tambellini was not going to receive a qualifying offer. He is free to negotiate a new deal elsewhere. Steven Fogarty was given a qualifying offer and it remains to be seen if he takes it or tries his luck elsewhere. Two more AHL’ers are off to Europe. Miro Aaltonen, from the Calder Cup champion Toronto Marlies, heads back to a yet unnamed KHL team. Leland Irving leaves San Diego for HC Bolzano (Italy-AEHL). Read the full article
THIS IS YOUR GAME
Name: Octavia Dawson Age: Twenty One Class Year: Sophomore Position: Striker, #10 Hometown: Walla Walla, Washington
THIS IS YOUR MOMENT
Curiosity. It certainly killed the cat, but not Octavia Dawson. The army brat formerly based in Walla Walla was an adventurous little girl, growing up being bounced around from city to city. Her father’s work serving the United States Navy meant that no city would truly be her home, that every place they settled down would be merely a location that would teach Octavia little lessons. It was in Miami, Florida that the two year old was seconds away from putting a fork into an outlet socket. Yokosuka, Japan allowed the seven year old to try and pet an aggressive dog knowing very well it was attempting to bite her hand off.
Octavia’s parents always had trouble keeping a tight grasp of their daughter’s hand as she slipped away and went off to do anything that brought a little excitement to her growing world. Lucas and Renee Dawson adored their only child, but work came first and Octavia didn’t mind. All it meant was less roadblocks in her mission to do whatever popped into her mind—she had her fun without them and grew up living as if they never existed until they waltzed back into her view with a new city on their lips. Moving became a true blur for her until the age of ten when they moved back to the States and she got her first taste of Exy.
Vermont was an ice hockey state, built around maple syrup and the love of a good puck being moved across the ice. But when the ice thawed and the fields were filled with baby green grass, they laid down a temporary court of wood and plexiglass, and the state turned into Exy country. Octavia picked up the game after school, when one of her teachers believed that Exy would provide a more stable form of excitement than her misadventures pranking her fellow classmates. Her energy was built for the sport: for running down hardwood floors, racquet in hand, and attempting to score points for her team. Even when she left Vermont behind for Singapore, Octavia brought her racquet with her, determined o make some of her international friends enjoy the game as much as she did. Sadly her friends didn’t find Exy as exhilarating, preferring to involve themselves in the betting world—and soon Octavia grew immersed in it too, her Exy racquet  laced with dust as she lapped up the world of gambling.
What was more fun than putting money down on a small bet and seeing if you would come up a winner? Games of chance and unexpected luck thrilled her, and Octavia allowed her teen years to be filled with wasting her weekly allowance to make bets. She’d bet on football games and boxing matches, spending her nights in places where the lights never seemed to reach the alleyways where dice were rolled. Singapore taught Octavia that there was fun in odds and numbers—and even more fun in not knowing if you were going home with more or less money than you had at the start. Her fun in the country didn’t last long, though, as her father was shipped off and she tagged along, ending up in the northwest corner of the United States with Exy back as her favorite little game.
But despite hurling a ball against plexiglass with armor on her shoulders and guards to protect her shins, Octavia didn’t get the high she normally felt when playing. She wanted to up the stakes a little—and how better to do it than rounding a few bets on Exy matches? It was a small group of classmates at first, silly bets of a buck or two before it grew into a network of other high schools and teenagers who had money to burn, all of them drawn in by the same slushy rush of excitement from betting that Octavia felt.
Recruiters came to Walla Walla to get a glimpse of the magic Octavia brought to the court as a key striker for her high school team. Octavia watched them speaking among themselves on the high benches while bets were being raked in on her team’s chances of winning. They were stacking bet after bet for her team to win. After all, their offense was a powerhouse when the right players were on the court. Victory was all but certain for Octavia and her team and she was sure that when the final whistle blew the recruiters would shower her with contracts. And it was so—predictable. Octavia wondered if she was even needed for the game. For her, it would be more fun for the team to lose than it would be to win. Not to mention, if they lost, all the money would still go to her.
Faking a fall takes talent, acting skills and a bit of dramatics. Octavia played the game with the same flair and passion as before, but when a backliner swiped her leg she allowed herself to tumble, smashing her whole body against the ground with a resounding smack. She hollered and screamed, nursing her ankle as referees and her coach ran to her. The end result: Octavia Dawson was out of the game and her team lost a key element to their strategy.
The team lost by two goals and hung their heads in shame and disappointment, having been only two goals away from tasting victory. But Octavia was flushed with money and a high that she never thought possible. However, being so lost in her betting game, she failed to play up her injury and walked that night with a skip in her step. When a fellow teammate spotted a hopping Octavia, they called her out on the not-so-secret betting that had taken place. The jig was up, but Octavia handed out a fistful of twenties and a sly wink, hoping that would be enough to make them walk away from what they saw and say nothing.
A foolish hope from a girl who knew better.
The next day Octavia sat in a squishy chair being reprimanded by her high school principal, her coach and,finally, her teammates. Her betting ring was dismantled and she was expelled for gambling on school grounds. No recruiter touched her, all the contracts she had been offered were revoked and all chances of Exy were thrown out. Her parents could only look at their daughter with confusion, unsure of how her little fun was a bigger problem than they realized. The nine lives were up and Octavia had nothing to show for it—not even a high school diploma.
SEIZE IT WITH EVERYTHING YOU’VE GOT
Everyone told Coach Wymack he was crazy to offer a contract to a girl who would rather see her team lose than win. But when he came up to Walla Walla and slid over the paperwork to Octavia and her parents it was clear that the man wanted someone on the team who was a true wildcard. There were two conditions: she needed to get her GED, and she would be required to meet with Dr. Betsy Dobson every other week for her gambling addiction or she would never get the chance to play Class I Exy with the Foxes. It was obvious to everyone what her choice should be, but Octavia had to play the game her way. So she flipped a coin: heads, and she would go to Palmetto State as a newly recruited Fox; tails, and she’d stay in Walla Walla, unsure of her future. Wymack flipped the coin and all parties followed the quarter’s tumble around the table, before landing on the side they all wanted for Octavia. Heads.
Rival teams don’t like to call Octavia a striker. In their books she’s more of a trickster, playing games at half court when the ball is about to be put into play. Her handle of the ball is a magic trick and she has regularly scored using unusual tactics that make the audience scratch their heads. Of course, that’s only if Octavia is willing to put in the effort. Her wishy-washy attitude when it comes to games or practice has gotten her labelled as a liability by some of her teammates—no one except the bubbly girl herself knows whether she’ll play at 100% or -5%. Exy may have brought adventure back into her life, but on more than one occasion Octavia has wanted a little bit more risk or challenge. She’ll do her best to find it on the court.
