Do you think Renee Walker watched the Barbie movie and cried? Do you think she silently let tears shed at the end because she could only think of Stephanie giving her a chance? Do you think she would let Allison hold her hand in quiet acknowledgment of the vulnerability shared in the space of the theater? Do you think when they get into the car Renee sobbed because she is tough and she is strong and she use to be a bad person and then someone so deeply in love with humanity held out a hand to her; that Stephanie told her she was so worthy of love; she gave her somthing to believe in?
Do you think that Dan Wilds saw that movie and felt seen? That she remembered all the shit she was told about how she couldn’t amount to anything more then a side street hooker and knew it wasn’t true? Do you think Dan Wilds watched Barbie with Matt and he shed a tear for her because god damn it this is the strongest person he knows and how dare the word think she isn’t. Do you think Dan saw that and felt small because maybe she is just a little girl in a grown woman’s body holding the weight of the world, her world, her foxes, on her shoulders? Dan, who has had to fight for everything she ever had—she has to so she will — determination scared knuckles gripping at the womanhood she did not think she was ever allowed to have.
Do you think Allison Reynolds saw the mom in the movie and her heart broke because she would never have that? She could never have the mother who just wanted to be with her? The mother who would fight for her right to be a girl? Do you think she resonated with the way that it was put into words how she would only ever be seen as a rich man’s daughter, a gold diggers child, a trophy for some man to show off? Do you think she felt lonely when the montage of woman played because she would never understand the beauty of intimate family?
Do you think that these women who had to fight every battle imaginable — spit in the face of exhaustion because the weren’t allowed that privilege — cried in their room together. Holding each others broke parts because no one else will?
Do you think they would have liked the movie?
