Monster of the Week custom playbook: The Furry

This was spawned back near the end of my winter term, where i had sleepless nights studying for finals and finishing up projects

The Furry

You are fully committed to your fursona to where you own a fursuit and believe you are them. No one really knows who you really are under it, and sometimes that is usually for the best.

The fursuit

You are always in your fursuit, no matter what. You either do not want anyone to know who you are inside it, or you just like how hot and stuffy it is inside.

Standing out: no matter where you go, you stand out in the crowd. When you enter a new location where there are people, roll +weird. On a 10+, no one pays you any attention or don’t really mind. On a 7-9, you draw attention and some folks might be wary of you. On a miss, you draw unwanted attention.

I'm one of you guys! Depending on the type of animal your fursona is, you can use the Manipulate Monsters on specific monsters.

Mammal: werewolves and mammal-istic creatures (must pertain to the type of mammal you are)

Bird- harpy, gryphons, bird-like monsters (must pertain to what kind of bird you are)

Reptile: dragons, wyrms, lizardfolk, other reptilian monsters (must pertain to what kind of reptile you are)

Amphibian: loveland frogs, salamanders, other amphibious monsters (must pertain to what kind of amphibian you are)

Exotic: insectoids, aliens, other animalistic monsters (must pertain to the kind of exotic creature you are)

On a 10+, the monster believes you

On a 7-9, they want proof and imitate one of their powers

On a miss, they are insulted and you are now their prime target

Comfort pal! If someone you are talking to is distressed, you can comfort them using your fuzzy-wuzzy charms. Roll +charm.

On a 10+, you successfully calm them down and you are able to get some info.

On a 7-9, pick one: you calm them down or you get some info, but it may just be a word or phrase or a short description

On a miss, you distress them even more.

I really am my sona. Your fursuit is actually enchanted. Pick one power that can relate to your fursona:

Speed- you run faster than a normal person.

Super strength- roll +weird instead of tough when you roll to kick ass

Stretchy- your limbs are like rubber. You take -1 harm when you are attacked by electricity or crushed.

Flight- you can fly. When you attempt to fly while holding someone, roll +weird. On a 10+, you fly them away effortlessly. On a 7-9, you lift them, but your speed is slowed down and you take -1 ongoing. On a miss, you drop them and they suffer +1 harm.

Animal speak: you can speak to and understand animals. When investigating a mystery and/or manipulating someone when its an animal, roll +weird instead of sharp or charm. However, when you do this around a public area, people will see and will not interact with you no matter the outcome.

Water breathing: you can breath underwater and can swiftly swim. However, your suit is going to be soggy and will slow you down on land afterwards for up to three hours.

I’ve seen some freaky shit on this. When investigating a mystery, you can choose to roll +weird instead of sharp if you can justify how you know about this from weird art or stories you might have seen on furry sites.

I’ll be a distraction! With your fursuit such a distracting color, you can chose to run out and distract the monster and put yourself in immediate danger. When you do so, mark experience.

Careful, I have claws. Your paw-gloves have sharp claws on them. You know, for authenticity. You can use them when you kick ass. Claw (1-harm, hand)

Its made from durable material! Your fursuit is counted as +1 armor. This does stack if you manage to get a flack vest over you.

Gear

You get two weapons that you can somehow hide within your fursuit.

Switchblade/butterfly knife/folding knife (1-harm hand)

Golf club, baseball bat, cricket bat, or hockey stick (2-harm hand

innocuous messy)

.22 revolver (1-harm close reload small)

Big knife (1-harm hand)

Hunting rifle (2-harm far loud)

Introductions

When you get here, wait for everyone to catch up so you can do your introductions together. Go around the group. On your turn, introduce your Furry by name and look, and tell the group what they know about you.

History

Go around the group again. On your turn, pick one of these for each hunter:

You met each other at a convention. Decide on which convention.

You are related to each other. Decide if you are siblings, cousins, parent-child, etc.

They mistook you for a monster and almost killed you. What did you do to tip them off that you’re actually a person in a costume?

You are romantically involved with them. Decide what your relationship is with them.

The two of you are close best friends. You trust them with your life and secrets.

They are also a furry. Let them decide what their fursona is.

They saved your life and you owe them a big debt.

You saved their life, somehow.

Luck

You can mark off a Luck box to either change a roll you just made to a 12, as if you had rolled that; or change a wound you have just taken to count as 0-harm, no matter how bad it was. If your Luck boxes all get filled, you’ve run out of good luck. Okay ��🗵🗵🗵🗵🗵🗵Doomed.

The Furry Special: When you use a luck point, something with your fursuit will happen. The keeper will pick one-

The fursuit rips and tears and you’ll have to get it mended

You lose your fursuit head, leaving your head exposed

Someone will recognize who you are in the fursuit, and it may or may not be a good thing.

Harm

When you suffer harm, mark off the number of boxes equal to harm suffered. When you reach four harm, tick “Unstable.” Okay 🗵🗵🗵|🗵🗵🗵🗵 Dying Unstable: 🗵 (Unstable injuries will worsen as time passes)

Leveling Up

Experience:🗵🗵🗵🗵🗵

Whenever you roll and get a total of 6 or less, or when a move tells you to, mark an experience box. When you have filled all five experience boxes, you level up. Erase the marks and pick an improvement from the following list:

Get +1 weird (max 3)

Get +1 charm (max 2)

Get +1 cool (max 2)

Get +1 sharp (max 2)

Get +1 tough (max 2)

Take another Furry move

Take a move from another playbook

Advanced Improvements

After you have leveled up five times, you qualify for advanced improvements in addition to these. They’re below:

Get +1 to any rating, max +3

Change this hunter to a new type

Create a second hunter to play as well as this one

Gain another fursuit. When you wear the new suit, change your look and, if you want, change your furry moves. You can only change your suit at the beginning of a new mystery.

The history of my fursonas! 🐱

I’m in an especially infodump-y mood at the moment and I watched a video about fursonas that inspired me (Shoutout to Pocari Roo’s channel!) so here we go ^o^

I first learned about the furry fandom in about 2013-14 from some friends at school! Granted, the two teenage boys I talked to a lot were more obsessed with the... sexual side of that xD I won’t go into that though because that would involve me talking about more uncomfortable stuff >.> I also had another friend that was such a huge influence to me and they’re a big reason that I still draw fuzzy animals to this day! Their fursona at the time was named Icy and I thought that character was the freakin’ coolest. I remember going home after talking to them, filled with inspiration and making my very first fursona!

Her original name was Rogue Feather, but the name Scarlett came later and ultimately stuck way better! Her design was simple, a red fox with a purple bandana! Not much thought was put into her, I just put together what I thought a typical fursona would look like :P I didn’t draw her much since I was way more focused on MLP and my ponysona Starfruit, but I still enjoyed doodling her!

Shortly after Scarlett, I created Citrus the cat! To be honest, she didn’t really represent me other than being a cat xD Her design was actually based off of a girl that I had a crush on at that time, but that’s a whole other story >.>

Also, it was coincidental that Twinkie has elements from both of these beginning characters, I just noticed that making this post! I learned that I loved cats from creating citrus, and I loved drawing Scarlett’s wings and bandanas so I suppose it was natural that my current fursona would have all of these traits :P

Well, months pass after posting the first drawings of Citrus and Scarlett on my Instagram, and at this point I decided to try taking up digital art! I downloaded FireAlpaca for free (still my program of choice x3) and worked really hard at drawing with only my mouse!

My friend that inspired me to draw more furry characters had changed their fursona over from a bright sparkledog-ish color scheme to another character with muted browns and oranges. Inspired once again, I designed another cat character to represent myself!

Meet Macchiato (or Mac for short)! They were made when I switched my focus from My Little Pony to furry characters, and I moved from Instagram to DeviantArt as my main art site.

When I made Mac, I was close to beginning high school and I questioned a lot about my identity, mainly my gender and sexuality :P For a period of time, I pushed aside my adoration for ponies, Pokemon and colorful things in favor of things I thought were “cooler” and more boyish. A large part of this was my complicated relationship with my gender identity, but also because I thought I had to act more mature... so I expressed this by drawing myself as a cat? It was complicated xD

Anyways, while I have a soft spot for Mac, they’re sort of my own Rex Dangervest if that makes sense :P I mean, they were my first expression of feeling neutral to gender which was a big deal for me, but when I look at their drab colors it sort of makes me sad that I didn’t have much fun designing them. (I did have a blast drawing that pixel reference though, I remember that xD)

I also created a few more furry characters just for the fun of it! I won’t post pictures of all of them for the sake of length, but they were Chamomile the fennec fox, Minx the cat, Caira the alien dog, Pfeffer the bunny, Flicker the bat (who I should draw again sometime >.>) Mitzi the dog and... Whatever animal Skyler was supposed to be xD I made all these characters before I attempted to make a fursona that I felt more connected with...

Along came Clash the cat, an even more depressing character than Mac for me to look at xD I was considerably depressed at this point from the pressure of high school and my identity issues, the droopy eyelids and chaotic color scheme of him sort of reflect this.

It’s a good thing you can’t read his description in that screenshot, Believe me, but I think I should quote a part of it because it greatly represents how I felt about myself during the time period when I made him.

“If you were to dissect his brain, you’d see something much like somebody’s tangled collection of thread and yarn. Colorful, unkept, and full of pushed aside potential.”

Ouch!!

Well, after a period of depressing fursonas I played that one cat icon creator game that circulated on Tumblr for a while, and I made my favorite old fursona! I think that he had a lot in common with Twinkie and I used them more than everyone else beforepaw.

Here’s Cetrada, my little Nickelodeon slime cat xD I named them after the Italian citron-flavored soda that my friend Francesca (Love ya buddy!) sent to me in the mail! That soda is actually spelled Cedrata, the misspelling of the name was not a creative choice but an actual dumb mistake xP

I genuinely still love this character, I nicknamed them Limey since it’s simple and cutesy like them, but I’m not sure if I’ll ever use them again. Think of them as teenage Twinkie I guess xD I love ya Cetrada, you were a good kitty <3

Eventually Cetrada grew stale for me and I went through a couple of other fursonas. I don’t have much to say about them since they were pretty short lived, but I’ll post a single picture of each of them! I’m getting a bit tired of making mini collages of them anyways :P

While Reese’s design and colors are a bit awkward, I genuinely adore their mini companion Mallow the bat :P They look like pistachio pudding, what a cutie!

Ugh, this fursona stresses me out to look at too xD I mean arguably they’re the closest in design to Twinkie (yellow cat with angel wings and star knee markings) but they remind me of a rough time I suppose? I drew a couple pictures of them looking more sexualized and with a more slim body type when in reality I was overweight and scared of intimacy... they just remind me of an unhealthy period of my life @_@ I must have felt that too though, I dropped this fursona pretty quickly.

I do actually like Kit even though I used him very briefly, I was starting to have WAY more fun with bright colors in my drawings! Sure he’s a bit too pastel 2015 Tumblr, but I do still like that pink and yellow combo ^w^

Eventually I grew sick of my DeviantArt and mostly just posted art on my main Tumblr where I got super into the kidcore scene! I had rediscovered my love of fun colors and sparkly eyes, kidcore sparked a new me! I wasn’t doing fantastic in life, but I developed more optimism and a genuine love for simple things which grounded me a lot. This was such a wild part of my life, through reblogging pictures of rainbows and Pokemon and slime I gained over 2,000 followers O.O Two of my closest friends told me that they found me by my influence in the kidcore Tumblr community back around 2016 and were intimidated to talk which is just nuts to me x’D

Anyways I’ll try not to go on a tangent about that anymore, but 2016-17 was wild! I should give a shoutout to my very first sparklesona Cosi, but he was made only barely before my true fursona...

That’s right babey, the one... The only!!!

HE’S FINALLY HERE! Twinkie, the fursona I truly felt a personal connection with. I mean, he’s everything I love bundled into one! Pikachu has been my hugest comfort ever since I was four years old so naturally I would have to incorporate it into my fursona somehow! I also gave him a bandana, my favorite accessory to draw on furry characters, and wings! Of course I love rainbows too so I gave him rainbow wings..... But I tweaked his design since the colored wings made him more bird-like. Nothing against birds of course, but I thought plain white angel wings were simpler and more iconic for him! I did give him a touch of rainbow later with his tag design! I also scrapped his red dot eyebrows and his tail bandana, but overall I loved the character I made! I was thrilled to have a fun cartoon kitty that I could use to express myself :3

Before him my only true-feeling ‘sona was Starfruit the pegasus, it was fulfilling because I feel like when I made Twinkie, I started to find myself!

Twinkie did go through a couple redesigns including a semi-drastic color change sometime in early 2018, but I really do feel content with the way he looks right now! In Twinkie I see friendliness, optimism, and a caring heart which is what I strive for! He represents the journeys I took to be more comfortable with myself and he radiates the confidence that I hope to achieve one day as well >:3 I mean it is possible I could change him for a new fursona or even flat out drop him in the future, but after 3 strong years I think Twinkie will stay a part of me for a while ^w^

Anyways, if you’ve read all of this, THANK YOU!! This was a really personal post and I think it’s fascinating to look at my own self progression this way, I hope somebody gained something from this but if it was just for me that’s okay too xD

FAQ and Guidelines

Alright everyone, its 2019 in the year of the lord Let’s get this thing moving! If you would like to see your character printed in the first OC zine, this is what you gotta do:

1) Draw your character!

They need to be drawn full-body at least once, so we can see them in all their glory. If they have multiple forms/transformations, we would like to see that full-body too, but if you can only fit most of it, that’s fine. While there is no requirement for poses, we have a few recommendations.

If you have a personality trait you want to emphasize, try showing it in their pose: Maybe they’re super energetic, they might be jumping with joy, or if they’re not feelin’ it today, they may be slouching.

One thing to be careful about is not to let the pose hide their features -- like a crybaby character huddled up in the fetal position: We just can’t see all of them and their design like that.

THAT SAID: You can draw them multiple times for the page! If you want your character curled up, draw a second picture of them! Or a headshot! Or 4 headshots with different expressions! Just do whatever you feel comfortable fitting on the page -- which brings us to

2. Page size:

This zine will most likely be printed on legal-sized paper, which will be folded in half. Make your canvas size 8.55 in x 7.1 in. The size of the actual zine will be 8.5x7, but it will be cut by hand, so just add a tiny bit extra to account for that. Make sure that nothing incredibly important will be cut off by putting anything important on the edge of the page.

You can fill the background with a solid color, or you can just leave it white. You can also draw an elaborate background if you want! Just know that if it includes other characters in the background, they need to stay in the background. your main HAS to stand out from them, no group pics.

3. Write your character’s name somewhere on the page

If you want, you could write a description or bio as well! Just try to keep it short. There is no word count, but make sure your font is big enough to be legible without taking up more than about half the page. If your character is accepted, but there is an issue with their bio, we will contact you and ask to edit it.

When you’ve completed your character’s page, send it to us through private message, and we will review it! We can not guarantee that every submission will be accepted for print, because the stapler can only tackle so many pages. If It Is Not Selected For Print, it will still show up in the digital bootleg.

4. Add your name (or nickname), age, country/state, and any social media links you want to include, but limit it to 3 links (like, insta, tumblr, and twitter).

When are the things happening!?

We currently do not have a submission deadline, or set date to release the zine, but we are hoping to have it finished by Summer, so cross your fingers and send in a character as soon as you possible can.

Can I submit my OC for (this show/book)?

No fan characters will be accepted. This zine is to show off original characters that are your brain childs. Fan characters are great and super fun and can have really creative designs, but there are specific places and other more specific zines to submit them to. Even Admin Lightning’s main avatar is an Adventure Time OC from 2011. As much as we would love to see your gem-sona, or cuphead OC in the mix, we feel like fan characters would easily dominate the other OC’s, and we don’t want that. then again, You COULD change them up a little bit and not tell us that it is a fan character though. We won’t ask questions.

What about DnD characters?

This one is acceptable because there is a lot more diversity within the DnD universe than there is in an average show/game. That said, we know that there are A LOT of them, so we can only accept a limited number.

What about Furry characters?

Furry is a fandom, but it’s not a copyright brand. Send us your wolves and lions and dragons!

I drew it on paper! Can I send you a picture?

If you drew it traditionally, please please please scan it. That will keep your original quality and proportions the way you made them. If you don’t have a scanner, please try to take the best picture possible without shadows, and without blurriness. If you send us a picture, keep in mind that we may take liberties in editing/color correction to get it to fit with the zine.

Color vs. Black and White?

We want a mix of both! Do whichever you want. If it is a pencil sketch, tho, you should know that we’re gonna have to give it more contrast and it may turn out black and white. If you do submit a pencil sketch and want it to be another color (like, make all the lines blue or something) just let us know.

I suck at drawing, but I have a good character! Do I have a chance?

Definitely! We won’t turn you away because you’re a beginner artist- we welcome it! Just try your best! We’re measuring on creativity, not skill. If You Have a friend who wants to draw your character and you write the bio, make sure you add both your names.

What if I don’t get accepted?

Everyone will get accepted. While we can only have a limited number in the physical zine for printing purposes, there will be a digital bootleg containing all the zine submissions! (minus those that are inappropriate)

What is inappropriate? Are you banning porn like tumblr did?

HECK. NO. we love artistic porn here we’d LIKE to keep realisitc cocks out of the zine, but whatever. We will do a vote later if you want the physical zine to be NSFW, but the bootleg will include EVERYTHING. What we will NOT accept is the following:

Images depicting rape or incest

***overly Sexy kids: If your character is young and sexy, you'd better have a pretty damn good reason for it. A little bit is frowned upon, but potentially still accepted but it depends. Think Of Alois Trancy from black butler. Anything a step farther WILL be banned and likely reported.

Racist portrayals of stereotypes

Any antisemitic propoganda at all.

Any sort of hatred towards LGBTA.

HATEFUL politics. Idc what your affiliation is, just be respectful about it. You prolly won't need this anyways.

Can I have multiple submissions?

you can submit several, but we'll only choose one per person, so maybe just choose your favorite. We Will Only use one in the bootleg as well.

What Is The bootleg you keep going on about??

Think Of It As A director's cut. This Will include a PDF with all the submissions, including what we couldn't print.

if I submit a character, will I get a free copy?

no. Most of the people wanting these will be people who contributed. If I made copies for all of them, I wouldn't be able to afford printing.

fk: So a big thing that got discussed in a circle I'm vaguely in: many creators arguing about how uncomfortable they would be if anyone was kin with their ocs, and don't almost all characters count as someone's oc? And that it's claiming it, possibly going against characterization, generally insulting the creative process they went through if it's 'memory/past life' fictionkin. And I'm a creator too, so definitely I would feel weird and uncomfortable over someone being kin with my characters

see, okay. i’ve had this convo with creator-types a couple of times. because of course you don’t want someone stealing your hard work, claiming it as theirs, and portraying it in a way you disagree with, right?

but let’s examine those claims.

stealing your hard work: what do we mean here by stealing?

obviously not ‘enjoying’; if that were the case reading a fic or viewing a drawing would be theft, and that’s not true (even when things leak, i believe, but waiving that dimension of grey morality).

benefiting from it? well, if it makes someone’s life better, inspires them, uplifts them, helps them make sense of the world and connect to people… that’s benefiting; is that undesirable? why are you creating and putting your creations into the world?

profiting from it? yes, okay, bad without your approval and mutual profit - but we’re not really talking about intellectual property theft turned into marketing for money through merch. i don’t think there’s a financial profit component to *being kin.* that’s some… uh, criminal/asshole behavior, notttt really linked to identity.

my honest best guess here is - stealing as in “benefitting from in a way i didn’t intend and which makes it feel taken out of my control, making me feel i’ve lost it as though it were physically taken from me.”

and that’s the “claiming” thing, right? asserting authority. standing up and saying, “actually, this is mine, and i know it best and have the final word.”

but the vast majority - and i know this may seem unbelievable! because looking around, the highly visible ones are the troublemakers - the *vast* majority of kin, yes fictionkin too and whether spiritual or pastlifey or otherwise, don’t fucking do that!

look, it sucks ass to look around and see “x character against y thing” as if kin-ness was proof of personal opinions. i hate it. and it’s an appeal to authority, a fallacy. and yeah there are some who are saying their word is canon, is Truth, overwrites canon, *they* would *never* so that part’s invalid. these are bold claims and uncomfortable and painful and icky.

and - to be perfectly clear - i’m not trying to appeal to a “but we’re not like THOSE kin, we’re GOOD and BEHAVE” respectability bullshit, i’m… i’m legit just trying to say that, that’s Bad Behavior, by Anyone

because? it’s not only kin who can/do that actually! roleplayers, other creative types, other fans. anyone can proclaim My City Now and go canon-divergent and loudly insist they are the canon now.

(and there are degrees, y’know? and degrees of reactivity to it. creators who dislike *any* fanfiction because it will be *inevitably* misrepresenting their world and characters. creators who only dislike x kind because *it specifically* is misrepresenting their intent. creators who say “go wild, it’s all canon.”)

fictionkin can be, probably are, the most egregious / visible / provocative case, to be sure. because there’s that specific claim to authority, sometimes with a spiritual tinge which makes it very hard and awkward to disagree/argue with. and because wow, personal, someone saying they’re *your* character and *you’re* wrong / hurting them.

but… mm. yes, all characters were oc’s once. where’s the line where they become public domain, become open to having fic written about them, to fix-it arcs and au’s and kidswaps and playing with how they’d be different in different scenarios, become “not weird” to find that people are kin with?

because if you’re saying that line is a certain threshold of popularity/cultural saturation, a certain size of fandom… why? and are you sure you’re not arguing it shouldn’t happen at all? that it’s only Maybe an Unfortunate Expected Thing if something hits critical popularity?

and then… why wouldn’t people connect to, find themselves in, things regardless of size? regardless of date made? sure, most popular = most visible = highest exposure = maybe more finding there, but…

and further - why does it hurt anyone, invalidate anyone, that that person over there conceptualizes of their connection as reincarnation, as spiritual? that that’s the lens of meaning they ascribe there? as long as they’re not trying to convert you to their belief system? as long as they’re not using it to manipulate people?

seriously. why isn’t that a fucking compliment, that someone finds your character to resonate so strongly, so particularly, that they believe maybe that was them in a past life? is that too woo? too weird? too crazy? too awkward? too cringey? or is it fear of what they might do?

because if it’s about actions, about claims to authority and that sort of - stealing without credit or respect, fostering resentment of you - okay! totally! but that’s behavior not identity.

and if it’s about the other stuff… please stare at that.

specifically, please ask: **what would it take to make me comfortable with someone being kin with an oc of mine?**

if they promised to respect your vision and rights as creator, even if they disagree, and to never argue their feelings usurped your creative license?

if they promised to never bring it up where you could see it, including by accident in public..?

nothing…? why..?

as a final note, i know a lot of creative-types, actually, who are flattered as fuck by people being kin with their oc’s. (interesting factoid? usually furries. which i could opine about the whole sona culture and what’s complimentary and expected etiquette &c.)

so“possibly going against characterization” - so do fanfics, friends, that’s how it be“claiming it” - hopefully not in an asshole way, if so, please block as an asshole. if merely using the *word* kin constitutes “claiming” to you… that’s not good faith“insulting the creative process” - some people believe in multiverse theory, or that all our stories/fiction/etc really happened somewhere else and creators are channeling that. it’s a belief, a mode of thought. many of those same people still deeply respect the work it takes to share/create that stuff. if you feel they’re not acknowledging your hard work, taking you for granted, acting assholeish, block ‘em, treat them like any other entitled person. (on the other hand if you feel they’re not Properly Acknowledging and Lauding you with enough Disclaimers and Praise every time they discuss what you’ve created or relating to it… hm)

it really fucking is just. hey, a sort of subculture and word people use about intensely relating to stuff. doesn’t mean that intensity is gonna disrespect you. some might. but seeing that and leaping instantly to DISRESPECT is… missing a lot, and tarring with same brush, and is pretty disrespectful itself.
