SEARCHING AO3: A (SLIGHTLY) MORE ADVANCED GUIDE

Disclaimer: This is very very geared towards finding fics about a particular character rather than a pairing. My favourite guys tend to be popular-ish women that appear in a lot of fics but only as supporting characters so I’ve had to become v good at combing for things that actually centre them <3

For this guide we’re gonna use my current hyperfixation: Mel Medarda & see what we can find lol

1. Use the tag filter system as your default! It’s superior in every way to the normal search except for the “any field” section which can be pretty useful but unless you’re using it for SPECIFICALLY THAT, don’t bother.

You can access the tag filter by clicking on any common tag (we’re gonna use “Mel Medarda”) and then hitting filters.

This thing is SO useful! Poke about in the dropdown menus; each of them will have the top 10 associated tags for that category. For example the top additional tags for Mel are Angst; Slow Burn and Fluff because,,, well. yk

+ it shows the number of fics with those tags under the “main” tag of Mel Medarda!

2. Keep an eye out for character specific tags! Now that we’re definitely using the tag filtering system we can start actually filtering through those tags <3

Most characters will have common but specific tags that both name them and imply something about their arc in the fic. A frequent example is something like “X character needs a hug”, or more obviously: “X character centric”.

These are my go-to tags for Mel! Most characters will have a variation of this set + some others (“BAMF character name” is also a pretty common one in older fandoms) and any one of these (INDIVIDUALLY, at most filtered in sets of 2) will lead to a few hundred results. It’s not 100% flawless because a lot of authors over-tag, but a solid 80% of the fics under these tags will at least heavily feature the character you’re looking for.

3. Filter by summary!!

At the bottom of the tag filters there’s a section called search within results. This is your Best Friend.

What this script will do is search for whatever you put in the quotation marks and then only give you fics with that thing in the description. I like to use it for character names but it also does a pretty good job filtering for tropes — try using it for vampires lol

Doing this with Mel narrows down her character tag from 7000+ to just under one and a half thousand fics, all of which at the very least include her name in the description.

4. RAREPAIRS ARE YOUR FRIEND! Canon but only semi-popular ships are infinitely more likely to get tagged in the background than say, for example — melvik (nobody is writing background melvik). This tip only works if you’re willing to multiship for more content of your guy but it is very effective.

5. Related to tip 4: Search by otp! If you’re locked in on a particular pairing that’s more popular, you can search for fics that ONLY include that ship.

This is super useful and also the main reason I don’t tag side pairings in my own fics! Also remember to use this script with ship tag rather than just a character one — otherwise it won’t work.

6. Parent tags exist! This is less of a strategy and requires more trail & error, but lots of tags filter into each other. For another Mel-related example, filtering by the Only Meljay tag would also being up fics tagged with Jayce/Mel Medarda-centric — despite (potentially) not having the original tag you filtered by. This is because Jayce/Mel Medarda-centric is the Parent of the original tag, meaning ao3 has deemed the two tags related enough to appear in each other’s search results.

This is something done manually by ao3 staff so the consistency of parent tags are a little weird sometimes.

More practically, this is an interaction to keep in mind when blocking tags. If for example you were to exclude “Torture” from your search, ao3 would also automatically exclude —

Implied/Referenced Torture

Physiological Torture

Aftermath of Torture

And probably many more.

Even if the broad category of torture isn’t tagged in a fic, the specific referenced type of torture counts — to ao3 — as a tag of torture by itself.

Interestingly, the “sub-categories” of tag don’t feed into each other this way. You can block Physiological Torture and still see fics tagged with Implied/Referenced Torture or Aftermath of Torture.

Knowing this is useful in the sense that the more specific you get with a blocked tag, the less likely you are to accidentally filter out something you would actually be fine with (or inversely blocking a general category you HATE means you don’t have to obsessively filter out every possible iteration of that thing you don’t like).

You can tell tag is a Parent Category by searching for a Sub Category and blocking what you think is the Parent. This will result in 0 results.

Implied/Referenced Torture tag after blocking the Torture tag.

Each of these strategies are things to be done in waves or in combination with one another. Casting a wide net and then narrowing it down is really important, too many tags and you end up with no results.

Ao3 has an INCREDIBLY robust set of archival tools. It’s an amazing site and if a fic exists and you know what you’re doing, you should always be able to find it.

How do i even tag my fics?

In the past couple of years I’ve seen a lot of people genuinely confused about how to tag their works properly, so I wanted to explain some common facts or themes of your fics you could tag!

This is Part 2 of my fandom netiquette series here is part 1

But before we get into it: You can tag it whatever you want! Everyone searches and filters differently. Some even comment on the characters/story/writing process in them,etc. But sticking to some of these tips usually serves both the reader and the writer! The main reasons are:

The reader will find the exact thing they’re looking for or at least they´ll be in the right ballpark

It also warns the reader about content they might not like (at this specific moment) or could be triggered by

The writer will have more positive interactions with their readers.

Having said all that, tagging your fics properly boils down to just answering the 5 W-Questions

Who?

Where?

When?

What?

Why?

Who are the characters ?

All the major characters involved

All the minor characters involved (if you want)

if it’s a ship use / or X between the names (character A/character B)

if it’s a platonic dynamic use & (character A & character B)

If it’s a specific version of a character tag it as trait!characterA eg. nerd/teen/autistic!

If one character/ship is shown as less favourable

Anti!characterC/ship

Not Character C/ship friendly

Additionally you can tag the POV

the MC of the fic, POV Character A

The writing style, eg. First person pov

Switching POV

Where does it take place?

The canon world

Canon divergence; it is largely set in the original world but something is different (usually the ship being canon)

Pre/Post Canon, set befor or after the OG story

Alternative Universe (AU)

Alternativ Universe(AU), it is set in a universes different from the canon

Our world, modern AU

Our world, but in a specific place eg. Office AU, coffee shop AU, High school AU, etc.; they might spend most or only the begging of their story in this place

Set in another stories world, world AU eg. Star Trek AU, etc.

A/B/O, omegaverse, there are a lot of different versions and rules for that one, but it would take to long for now to get into

What is the length of the story ?

One shot, short and sweet stories usually not higher then 15k

Multiple One shots/One shot collection

What type of ending does it have ?

(Eventual) Happy ending, usually it means the main couple ends up together and even has a major group of friends just as happy by their side

Sad ending, usually implied with hurt non comfort

Open/ambiguous ending, usually means, that in the end they are not together ...yet! but there is hope for them to be friends or more (again)

Why are they behaving this way ?

Their state of being

Sick fic- one or all of them is sick, whether it’s the common cold or something deadly. You might tag the specific disease eg. Hanahaki disease

Powerless fic, if they have some sort of powers in the OG story but not in this fic

Deaged, through a magic spell/potion one or more characters turned younger, either into a baby or into the version of them before all the horrors tm. Aka precanon version of them

Injured

Hidden/Masked Identity

Which (major or minor) emotions are driving them to do so?

Angst/pain/sadness, there is at least some sort of sadness involved, it can be tagged Heavy angst/Light angst to specify, how painful it might be to read

Hurt and comfort; whether one or all are hurt, physically or mentally, doesn’t matter as long as one comforts the other(s) in some way …or at least tries

Hurt no comfort; one is hurt and they’re not being comforted (but they might be able to live on )

Crack/Humor, there are some objective funny things in it, whether that’s the main feeling or not

Crack treated seriously, the base idea is funny/out of character but within the fics universe it is very real and serious

Unresolved Sexual Tension (UST), aka they´re so frustrated but incapable of confessing

Jealousy; at at least one point, one of the characters gets jealous of the other/ someone else (seemingly) getting with the other

Fluff/tooth rotting fluff; it is so sweet that it’s like cotten candy aka it’s hella cheesy, major romcom vibes. Usually in combo with humor but can be seen in angsty fics as well

Protective!character, whether it’s verbally or physically protecting them

(Mutal) Pining, they´re constantly yearning for the other(s)

Oblivious character A, they’re completely misunderstanding the others intention, whether they’re believing them to be just nice or being insecure

Reconciliation, whether that is between the ship or other characters

Hate to love, they start out disliking or outright hating each other but end up falling in love

Grief, usually after a death

(Implied/Perceived) Betrayal/cheating,

Smut

PWP (porn without plot) / (porn with Plot)

Any position and type involved

Any emotions involved, rough/vanilla etc.

Top or bottom (specifying the character is written as characterA!top)

Dom or sub (specifying the character is written as characterA!sub)

Toys, if some are used and if so maybe even which ones

Kinks, any kinks involved or just spoken about

Again if any sort of doubt of consent is involved tag that!!

If the characters are minors, tag that as well! Even if you’re a minor, writing for other minors!

Warnings

Any sort of trauma can and should be tagged !! Even if they’re just talked about! Otherwise you might accidentally trigger someone !

Warning signs don’t apply

Explicit content (Smut)

Explicit words, Swearing

Alcohol

Discrimination; homophobia, racism, ableism etc.

Any sort of disorder eg. Eating disorder

Any sort of abuse, child abuse

Any sort of trauma can and should be tagged !! Even if they’re just talked about! Otherwise you might accidentally trigger someone !

Rape (Attempt)

Non con/dubious consent, aka the moment everyone involved is not giving enthusiastic consent or they don’t know who is truly the one doing it (eg. They’re masked/being lied to etc.)

Violence, any sort of physical altercation

Canon typical violence, this just specifies that it won’t go over the same amount of violent the OG story is t already showing

Fandom specific tags

A nickname

A catchphrase

Common praise for a character, eg. Character B is a good uncle

Common insult for a character, eg. Character C-A+ parenting

Specifying a relationship,that might not be canon, eg. B and C are siblings

Others

The fandom itself of course

The type of relationship(s) (mlm,wlw, multi etc.)

All or some of the characters sexualities

Character A centric, it’s mainly about their thoughts and feelings

Character A study, trying to decipher/depict or explore why the character might have turned out the way they did

One sided,-xyz, whether it’s being rivals or other type of feelings

Miscommunication/misunderstandings, whether for funny or tragic reasons

Trope based, any trope fitting to the fic , eg. sunshine/grumpy,

These are all the tags I can come up with at the top of my head but feel free to add!

Remember: It is in both the writers and readers interest to tag your works properly. It sets up the right expectations and thus a misunderstanding can be prevented. It´s basically like a summary of the fic but in less words!

Of course there will always be people, who either simply do not read the tags or will be mad about even the mentioning of an "unsavory" topic. There will always be a topic you won´t like nor understand! The sooner you accept that the easy it will be! But the ppl harassing creators/fans about them are usually the minority and frowned upon!

Alas I want to encourage everyone to be open minded! Either to genuinely try to understand why certain topics are written about, even if or especially because they´re "unsavory". But if you don’t want to waste your time on sth. you’re sure you don’t like, genuinely: Please just filter these tags out! That´s exactly why we have them!

None of us can afford to waste our very limited free time on arguing with and harassing others about something FICTIONAL …that we don’t even like. Instead, please focus on making and/or supporting art about YOUR favourite tropes/ships/tags! This is not only much nicer to the fans you don’t support but also to yourself! Positive interactions will result in more positive interactions after all! Mostly.

jayvik shippers need to understand that non-jayvik shippers are annoyed with you not because of not shipping jayvik, but because there is no escaping you.

you clog every tag on every social media platform. want to look at caitvi? jayvik posts tagged as caitvi for some reason. want to look at viktor posts? jayvik. jayce posts? jayvik. want to look at mel posts? jayvik. anyone talking about mel and viktor in the same sentence is obviously secretly talking about jayvik. (and by the way here's why every mel scene is secretly about jayvik and every viktor scene is secretly about how all he thinks about is jayce and why mel is inferior and jayce was a good boy and was right all along). you dominate the discourse and don't give room for criticism of jayce or viktor's writing and don't tolerate other interpretations. every theme in the show was about jayvik all along.

on my main blog, i write fic and make arcane posts - not complaining, staying in my lane, making my own content for me and my friends - and my tags, comments, and replies are full of people talking about jayvik and asking about jayvik when the ship is not tagged or present in my posts or fics, and jayce usually isn't even tagged because i just don't have fun with him as a character right now, and all people want to talk about or comment on is him or jayvik. so here i am, venting on my sideblog

this is a curse i specifically bear and cannot escape because as a fan of the writing of these aforementioned characters SEPARATELY, any and every algorithm is gonna shovel piles of jayvik posts 10 feet deep right up against my front door, and everyone on tumblr is "tagging for visibility" or whatever so there's no escaping it here either. blocking and muting does not help because either jayvik isn't always tagged, or jayvik is tagged at random and i end up hiding swathes of posts i actually do want to see. and there is also the fact that i WOULD be into jayvik because i do think it's fun, i WOULD have more fun discussing jayce specifically as a character who i think is a very fun hot mess, if social media wasn't making me despise both with a burning passion right now, which sucks

the only haven is Ao3 because people are still slightly sane when tagging their fics - at least with the relationship tags. jayvik shippers you do need to stop tagging mel though along with any other character who doesn't affect the plot of your story and i am dead serious

this is a vent post but i am also declaring - the reason why people are frustrated and annoyed at jayvik at large, as a concept, even if you yourself are a chill shipper and you don't see why we all can't just get along, is because the collective has poisoned the well and it's not fun for other people to be in the same space as you right now. there are a lot of you - be glad of that and happy, not every fandom let alone ship gets this large and energetic a following - but don't be surprised that people like me are gonna be mad because. it is irritating. and you're everywhere. and unfortunately there's nothing that any one person can do about it. it is an environmental thing and you just. need to come to terms and be aware, idk

Hi folks! It's that time of year again and this time I, SuspiciousZucchini, will be taking over the managing of the Week. The dates will remain the same as last year, July 24th-31st in order to give us all time to work on our creations. So as a first step we'll be polling the community for prompts. The crew of the Star Gaydians server has very helpfully come together to help me compile this list of potential prompts. Here's how it'll work:

Clearing the air on the “Bychance vs Byler Civil War”

Bylers vs Bychancers? More like Bylers & Bychancers vs The Miscommunication Trope ( something like that ).

Why this is what i think is actually going on:  

This is NOT Mileven vs Byler 2.0 at all because bychance has not ONCE been proposed as a replacement for Byler, at least not from myself or @cypherheartnokey which are ( as far as im aware ) the main people theorizing about it right now. I personally don’t even see it as a real ship, but that’s just me. 

HOW THIS WHOLE THING STARTED ( as far as i know )

So a few days ago, i made this post:

I used the Byler tag and have continued to do so bc skeptic ( and even full on anti-bychance ) Bylers were my intended TARGET AUDIENCE for this. I knew there was a risk I would get some hate for taking it seriously since Bychance was never supposed to be more than just a silly and fun crackship that the fandom made up. (😭im not even gonna pretend I don't go into laughing fits over how absolutely bonkers I sound to myself most days. cypherheartnokey and others --you pookies know who you are <3-- who See The Things Im Seeing keep me sane istg my ride or die fr ) 

It was just supposed to be a fun writing exercise to see if my current ideas held up under scrutiny from bylers. To test myself, basically. 

MY INITIAL ASSUMPTION 

Before I posted, I thought the risk of getting dogpiled on & getting called 'delusional' & whatever else was worth it bc, to my surprise, my earlier Bychance analyses had been well received–even though some of the Bylers engaging with them don’t really think Bychance will happen, they still think the theories about it are entertaining and fun to read and offer input on. This has led to some interesting conversations about Mike and Will’s arcs, and it’s been nice through this content drought. 

However, what i did NOT anticipate was to cause a ‘ship war’--I really didn’t think this would cause harm and that anyone would stoop so low as to send death threats over differing opinions on hypothetical ships that may or may not even happen in the show & even if they do, nothing guarantees they’ll happen in a way we’re perfectly happy with, let’s please be real about our expectations here since we have 0 control over the creative direction the duffers will actually take. 

All we can hope for is that us Bylers truly are amongst their intended target audience and that the show delivers a satisfying closure.  

MY INTENTIONS & WHY I WILL CONTINUE TO USE THE BYLER TAG ( with discretion )

Using the Byler tag allows like-minded Bylers to find my theories–without the tag, it'd be harder for them to find them. 

However, I WILL be extra thoughtful with my use of the tag going forward, and make sure I'm using it when the conversation centers Byler/Mike/Will and other themes pertaining to Byler.

MY CURRENT STANCE

for anyone receiving death threats or insults on behalf of “bychance shippers”, you DO NOT deserve that. Please report and block, if possible. these people are saboteurs, and just want to stir drama without caring about the harm they cause to the community. In fact, they probably enjoy it tbh. 

i do also have to say that i am no authority here and cannot be tone policing other bychancers. i also can’t pretend i am entirely neutral in this scenario since from what I've observed, my bychance mutuals and anons are REACTING to hate we’re getting from bylers. And whereas I'm aware that type of hate is only coming from a handful of people in the community, not all of us will be patient and graceful at all times, we’re human after all.

I dont care if a mileven calls me delusional, i laugh. But when bylers i have admired and learned from for years call one of us stupid for thinking/suspecting X theory might be hinted at and getting stomped on for trying to bring the conversation to the table, yeah I can't guarantee that's not gonna trigger a defense mechanism over time.

Do you personally have to like Bychance or agree? Absolutely not, nobody is saying that. And good faith critiques of the theory are always welcomed and I actually encourage it in my space as long as we keep it civil and follow fandom etiquette, since it keeps fandom alive.  

FINAL THOUGHTS 

The very message of the show we’re discussing is to choose love in the face of fear, and to not let it drive our choices and unawarely continue to feed the cycle of abuse and trauma. Let's do our best to not keep repeating, amongst each other, what we have already been subjected to by the most hateful parts of the ST fandom. 

i'm here to learn and have fun, not to cause wars, discourse or division--bychance as a theory is just the jumpstart and can change over time and maybe even become something else entirely. the goal is just to open the door for those curious enough to investigate, share and discuss any findings. An Open Letter to the BSD Fandom

Long post incoming. TL;DR: fuck fandom bullying. Full stop.

Fellow BSDers,

I have been writing for the BSD fandom since August 2021, where I started to write my way out of my big traumas. Somehow, with one image in my head, I started the CAU with A Drop of Black Coffee in the Pot. I'm not entirely sure if that makes me a "big name" in the fandom or whether that gives what I'm about to say more "clout," but hey... it's worth a shot, yeah? Because maybe people will listen.

Maybe.

Since coming into this fandom, I've made a lot of friends through Discord, and I have had a blast creating for, with, and among them. Through Discord, I became a rare pair aficionado and gained a soft spot for Chuuatsu, ChuuRan, and others. The conversations I had with fans, in short, brought me more than peace from my traumas. I found myself among a community who, through shared interests in pretty anime characters based on historical authors, held me up as I faced more traumas, enjoyed more successes, and just... lived.

HOWEVER (emphasis), in the last year or so, three of who I would consider my closest Discord friends--three people I care deeply about--have been bullied out of the fandom for their unconventional ships or portrayal of characters or preference for dead dove content, and two more have been targets of cyberbullying.

In one case, I was also targeted by Dazai Anon (one of the cyberbullies mentioned above). My response to this is always simple: I laugh at the death threats because I'm already dead inside, I delete the comments, I block the posts, and I keep writing what brings me joy. Sometimes, that's ChuuAtsu. Sometimes, that's a more popular ship. And in all cases, that's totally fine.

But that's me. And not everyone is like me.

I've written this post a dozen times in my head. I contemplated, as the "adult" in the room, putting everyone in timeout or putting on my disappointed parent face. But instead, I settled on this.

BSD fandom, respectfully, what the actual fuck?

Let me be perfectly clear: there is no good reason to ever bully anyone, but ships, tropes, character preferences and readings? These are among the worst. And don't even get me started on what's "canon."

What I guess I'm really trying to say is this: the three people I know who stopped making BSD content did because certain members of the community took their fun away. And that's never okay. There is room in the fandom for the main ships and the rarepairs. There's room for the fluffmongers, angst fiends, and dead dove aficionados. In fact, many of the friends I mention write content I personally don't, nor do they tend to write fluff and explicit consent the way I tend to, but guess what? We appreciate each other's art. We share ideas. We hold each other up. And, most of all, we're friends, anyway.

So if I'm in any place to ask this fandom for anything, it's to keep your own space as a writer/creator without taking someone else's space away. It's to have fun creating content SKK, but stop taking fun away from the people who create DaRan or DazAtsu or KuniDazai or Kouyou x Dazai or whatever ship. Most important, be kind to one another, regardless of what characters, tropes, or ships we love because at the end of the day, we're not just pseuds or creators; behind the screen, we're human.

As people, I don't think we have anything to lose in this. We can still work around tags and tropes and ships and characters we don't enjoy. Plus, who knows? You might make a new friend, gain new perspective on a character dynamic you never thought about, exchange ideas and share excitement about the newest manga chapter... and that might bring joy to both of you.

I really hope this letter to be the start of something bigger, maybe something that will move through boundaries between fan communities. I've thought about events, challenges, movements... but my limited resources as a creator with 99 mental health issues mean that for now, those ideas will have to wait. This letter, inadequate as it feels, still says most of what I want it to say.

I often say I appreciate people taking the time to read my fics. I mean that for this letter, too. So thank you, truly.

What can I create?

Absolutely anything, so long as it’s Stranger-centric. 

You can use the prompts, or you can just tag the week in Stranger-centric fanworks you create. You can draw art, write fic or meta, create cosplay, make arts and crafts, write headcanons, make videos, compose edits and collages—so long as your work centres and celebrates Stranger, we’re happy to have it! 

By Stranger-centric, we mean that he’s the central character in the work. This doesn’t mean he needs to be the POV character, as you can also write about characters perceiving or thinking about Stranger.

What won’t be shared? 

This event is accessible to all ages. While canon compliant dark themes and gore are allowed, any works with sexually explicit content won't be shared by the account for this reason. Artistic and non-sexualised nudity is fine and will be tagged for. Refer to this ask for more clarity on the specifics of this.

We also won’t share Stranger-centric fanworks that bash him (à la “here’s my essay on why Stranger SUCKS”). In any case of doubt about intention, other works posted will be taken into account to gauge intention; but we simply don’t want negativity to spread through the event. Angst, dark themes, and works where Stranger is victimised in horrible events are fine, as is tongue-in-cheek making fun of him, but they need to come from a place of love and spreading fun, not one of mockery of him and his fans and one of hatred.

Can I draw other characters or ships that don’t involve Stranger?

Absolutely! You can add other characters and relationships and even make them main characters, so long as Stranger is also the central character they share the spotlight with. 

We embrace any and all ships, even if they’re not Stranger ships, and will happily accept them as supplementary to the works made for the event. Just like how we accept any and all Stranger ships! Just don’t expect art of a non-Stranger ship with Stranger’s hand appearing in one corner of the canvas to be considered Stranger-centric.

This is also an offshoot of the nightshade week event, but Stranger week itself is unrelated to nightshade week. You can make completely platonic works, just like you can showcase any other Stranger or Omori ships. So no, no nightshade is required!

Do my entries have to follow canon?

Nope! You can do whatever you want to canon. Follow it, tweak it, crumple it up into a ball and toss it into the trashcan. We accept any and all Stranger headcanons, regardless of whether they’re about his appearance, his gender, his personality, his canon, anything. You wanna write about real world Stranger the entire event long? Knock yourself out!

Will you accept works focusing on non-Basil Strangers, like Kel Stranger?

Absolutely! While this event is all about celebrating the character Stranger, which in the files and the fandom’s consciousness refers to the Shadow Basil character, we think that anyone who thinks that the other Stranger variants should fall under this name should also get their time to shine. The prompts are written to be thematically applicable to the Shadow Basil variant who wants to lead Sunny to the truth.

What tag can I use?

You can use the Twitter tag #strangerweek2025 and the Tumblr tag #stranger week 2025. You can also tag the account (@nightshadeweek on both platforms) if your entry wasn't seen or send a DM to the account. On AO3, you can use the Stranger Week 2025 (OMORI) tag, as we’ll try to get it made canonical like the nightshade week tag.

How do I pick prompts?

You're free to use and interpret the prompts however you want. You don't have to do all the prompts, you can skip days, you can mix prompts, you can do prompts on different days, etc. If you want, you can also simply submit some Stranger fanworks that don't follow any prompts. This event is all about celebrating Stranger and creating new things for him together.

Do I have to complete every day or follow one category?

Not at all! You can do one day or all days. You can do one path or all paths. You don't have to follow a set path either; the categories are just there to give the prompts themes. Mix and match as you see fit!

Can I submit late entries?

Late entries are definitely welcome! After the event has ended, I will still regularly check the tag and share late entries.

HP Ace Aro Fest - 2025

It is official, we are back for the second year running! Our amazing fest was created to highlight any character who you see as asexual, aromantic, or anywhere on those spectrums.  Any era, any age, anyone.  Give me your QPRs, your sex-repulsed lovey-doveys, your hypersexual aromantics, and everything else you got.  As long as you give me a main character from the HP fandom who is a-spec, your work has a home with this fest.  Accepting fic, fanart, podfics, any medium your heart desires to give us.

What is “Jews In Fandoms”? The past several months have not been welcoming for Jews, but we’re still here! Jews have long been part of fandom and this prompt list will celebrate our love and passion for our favorite things. This is a fandom thing

AITA for accusing that publicly someone of intentionally posting their fics whenever I posted?

For context, I am autistic and write some fics that I post on AO3. But I ended up deleting my account there because some people started leaving me pornographic comments on the fics. All those comments were deleted along with the stories.

I will get to the main story now. I posted fics for a ship that I liked, but I also noticed that the fics barely got any views. So I decided to check the tags and see that someone else had also posted something which pushed my fics down from being the top post. I thought it was no big deal at first.

The second time I posted a fic for the ship, the same person also posts something around the same time. Once again, their fic pushed mine down from being on the top. And from what I saw, they got twice as many viewer interactions as I did. I thought that maybe it was just a coincidence that they posted when I did.

But then it happened a third time, then a fourth time, then a fifth time. Every time I posted for that ship, they posted something for that ship. I spoke to some friends about it and they said that they did not think it was just a coincidence. They were sure that this person was doing it with malicious intent.

Why would they think that you may ask? Because before I started posting my fics, I had said that I did not think it was fair that the ship had more fics for the male version of the mc than for the female version of the mc and that we could band together and post more fics for her. And then that person had made a since deleted post about how "female [character name] stans are the most annoying and obnoxious people in existence. All they do is boo hoo and whine when they don't get their content. If they are so upset, then those dumbasses should make the content themselves."

I decided to message this person because I saw that they had a tumblr account, and they just ignored all my messages. I ended up joining a discord servers they were in and I messaged them about how they kept posting fics when I did. They ignored my dms but were active in the servers. Since they kept ignoring me, I called them out in the server. Only then did they respond to me. They told me that it was just a coincidence and that I was just being overly sensitive. The other members in the server got on their side and called me rude and unprofessional for not keeping it in dms. I told them that I tried to but I kept getting ignored. The other members told me not to take the fic posting thing seriously and that it was no big deal and that I should just drop it instead of being upset.

I kept quiet after that and went back to posting fics for the ship, but the same person continued to post whenever I did. I pointed it out to the rest of the server and they called me an asshole for bringing it up again. So I just deleted everything on ao3 and left all the servers. I feel like giving up on writing now. It sucks because that was something I loved doing, but this experience has soured it for me.

So... this isn't the first time I've seen people being incredibly mean to a whole section of the phandom. It's the first time in a while I've seen a post this bad in the main "danny phantom" tag, though. I have Thoughts™ that have been stewing for a while. Thoughts™ that shouldn't be put in the tags of someone else's post.

I'm not going to link anything. These are just my thoughts, raised to the forefront by recent posts in the main tag.

TLDR: I have two main Thoughts™:

No matter what you ship, I welcome you to this phandom. The folks who openly despise real people for shipping fictional things do not represent all of phandom. Y'all deserve better than being called shitty names. Your ships do not make you a bad person, and I personally welcome you.

To y'all who keep trying to draw a line in the sand to define who is "degenerate" or whose work is "degenerate": the moment you draw that line, you create a way for others to shove people behind that line. And the folks who usually get shoved behind that line and called "degenerate" are lgbtqia+ folks, and sa/csa survivors. It's happened before on LiveJournal and FFN, and it's happening now, irl, with book bannings across the USA (and especially in Florida). The only way to protect lgbtqia+ folks and sa/csa survivors from this abuse is to not draw a line in the sand at all. Don't call folks "degenerate" for any reason, unless you're ready to have that finger pointed back at you by a larger and more negative movement.

First: no matter what you ship, I welcome you to this phandom.

The views of hatred and disgust that pop up in this phandom don't represent all of phandom. No fandom is perfect, and we'll always see some form of the "logic of disgust" from some folks in any fandom. But no matter what you ship, and whether or not I personally ship it, I welcome you. You will find no disgust from me as I am now.

If you dig backwards into my blog, you might find some anti sentiment. My introduction to fandom was first FFN, and then tumblr, back when I was more of a black-and-white thinker. I'm pretty sure I experienced some form of shock when I really started digging in to the Wild West that is fandom. I don't know if I ever expressed this shock online. But none of you deserve to be called "degenerates" over liking whatever fictional content you like. Y'all are a part of phandom, too, and any attempts to erase you or deride you are wrong.

We shouldn't be drawing lines in the sand and throwing people behind those lines. That's dangerous.

Second: to y'all who keep drawing lines in the sand, please consider the broader context around you.

The moment you draw a line in the sand to delineate between you and your group of people, and "them" and their group of "degenerates", people find ways to shove other folks, including you and your folks, behind that line. Historically, both in fandom and outside of fandom, the folks who get shoved ALWAYS include lgbtqia+ folks, and sa/csa survivors. We saw this with the purging of LiveJournal. We saw this with the multiple purges of FanFiction.Net. We haven't seen this with ao3, as far as I know; but their stance seems to be very anti-censorship for fandom-historical reasons.

Outside of fandom, we are seeing this now. I'm doing my senior capstone project on book bans. According to PEN America's data, over the past school year alone, 154 counties in 34 states have banned 1557 books 3362 times overall. Over 40% of those bans come from Florida counties. And much of the "reasoning" behind these bans is the same logic of disgust that fandom applies to "problematic ships": They call it pornographic and pedophilia. They call it harmful and age-inappropriate. They largely target books about lgbtqia+ people and people of color. And this year, they've also targeted "books on physical abuse, health and well-being, and themes of grief and death" - expanding their censorship to "protect the children".

Censorship doesn't protect anyone. Instead, it prevents people from holding genuine conversations with real people about the censored material.

And if you're not ready to have that conversation, that's fine! You do you! But don't create an environment where other people can't have that conversation. That only breeds the sort of black-and-white thinking that leads to 1406 book bannings in the state of Florida.

This is just speculation on my part: but I reckon every single person who supports those bans would love to ban the same content you want censored. And they'd call for you and the content you love to be lumped in with them.

We all deserve better than that. So please stop drawing lines in the sand.
