Excellent, coming from Sydney instead of triggering a panic attack he was able to calm himself down. Being excellent should remind him of a terrible traumatic time in his life, but from her, it's a good thing. She's the good thing. She always shows him his past to confront it, and the more he confronts it and repurposes it—by focusing on her—the closer he gets to healing.

Sydney parallels and juxtaposes Mikey, Claire, Chef David, and Chef Terry- it's like she gives him that soulmate feeling of familiarity but also destiny because she's taken all those good parts of his past and is creating a legacy that surrounds love.

I'm still rooting for Carmy. If he has no other reason or purpose to be an excellent, passionate, content man and chef, let it be for Sydney. All things point to her. Again-Whatever relationship they have, they were destined to meet and heal.

But if this is a different story they're telling- sometimes, it just doesn't work out—someone's traumas can literally freeze them from seeing such a chance to be better for themselves and for those around them.
