Sonic had always raved about chili dogs. It was his ultimate favorite food, the one thing he could eat morning, noon, and night without complaint. And you? Well… you really wanted to share that experience with him. There was just one little problem.

You had an insanely low spice tolerance.

And when you say low, you mean rock bottom low. Even the mildest hint of spice had your nose running like a faucet, your ears burning, and your stomach tying itself into knots. It was honestly unfair.

But today? Today, you were determined.

“Are you sure about this, (Y/N)?” Sonic asked, arms crossed, one brow raised in amusement as you stared down at the chili dog in front of you. The scent alone made your nose twitch. “I mean, I totally get wanting to experience the best food in existence, but I dunno if your body’s gonna forgive you for this.”

You gulped, nodding resolutely. “I can handle it.”

“Uh-huh.” His smirk widened. “You sure? ‘Cause last time you had a single bite of something mildly spicy, you looked like you got hit by one of Tails’ failed experiments.”

You shot him a glare. “That was one time!”

“That was three times.”

Ignoring his teasing, you took a deep breath, bracing yourself before finally taking a bite.

The moment the chili hit your tongue, you knew you had made a mistake.

Heat flooded your mouth instantly, your throat burning like you had swallowed fire. Your eyes watered, your nose immediately started running, and—oh chaos—your ears were ringing. You made a choked sound, frantically fanning your mouth as you reached for anything—anything—to cool the inferno on your tongue.

Sonic? Sonic was dying.

The blue hedgehog had doubled over, laughing so hard he was practically wheezing. “O-Oh man, I knew this was a bad idea, but I wasn’t expecting that! You look like you just fought the biggest battle of your life and lost!”

You couldn’t even argue, too busy suffering as you guzzled down a glass of water—which, by the way, did nothing.

“Why—why is it getting worse?!” you gasped, your voice nearly breaking.

“Yeah, water’s not gonna help much, buddy,” Sonic chuckled, though his laughter died a little when he saw your pained expression. “Whoa, okay, yeah, maybe this was a really bad idea. Here, milk helps, right?”

He zoomed off and returned in an instant with a glass of milk, which you gratefully took. The moment the cool liquid coated your tongue, relief finally settled in. You slumped against the table, panting dramatically.

“Never again,” you croaked.

Sonic patted your back, looking way* too amused. “Hey, you gave it a shot. That’s more than I expected.”

“You let me do this knowing I’d suffer.”

“Well, yeah,” he said shamelessly, grinning. “But in my defense, it was really funny.”

You weakly smacked his arm, though your glare had no real heat. “I hate you.”

He chuckled, pulling you into a side hug. “Nah, you love me. And don’t worry, next time, I’ll make you a chili dog with zero spice. Just for you.”

Despite the lingering heat in your mouth, your heart warmed at his words. You leaned into his side, sighing. “You better.”

And just like that, Sonic had a new mission: creating the perfect spice-free chili dog, just for you.

Herbarium is 100% inspired by Nabokov’s Laughter in the Dark, just without the murder and tragic unrequited love (lol, thank God). But seriously, prose-wise, it’s all coming from there.

My Emmrich is a morbid guy. Is that actually in character for him? Does he really sound like that in his own head? Who knows because I sure don’t. He’s just a bunch of pixels, and I’m not psychic.

That said, Laughter in the Dark isn’t the only book that’s left its grubby fingerprints all over my writing. There are a few others that have wormed their way into my “style,” if you can call whatever this is a style.

I’ll throw in a few quotes with the titles so you can see what I mean, because when I say those books are directly responsible for my writing, I’m not kidding; they practically wrote it for me.

Finally played the TOUCHSTARVED Demo! Still thinking about it over a week later.

I love it SO MUCH. and i have QUESTIONS. my extended thoughts below the cut [Demo spoilers included]

General thoughts:

this game is SO up my alley that it's insane. local goth gaming nerd is kicking their feet and giggling

the music? and sound design? It's honestly incredible, even beyond the infamous Every Time We Touch cover (Which is how I found this game). We all have to be giving more props to the music/sound work, it absolutely punches the experience up so many notches. When a soundtrack is released I'm immediately keeping it on hand for all my tabletop needs

absolutely enamored with the backstory mechanic. It adds so much individual depth to the character. you can feel attached to your MC without them being a complete blank slate. I absolutely love that different MC backstories have you pick up different details about the characters. (My favorite is The Hound immediately picking out who the leaders are amongst the group, in contrast to the other MC backgrounds)

I wanna eat the backgrounds. I wanna eat them whole. They're so detailed and colorful and have a great sense of depth. 100000/10

Ais:

Thank you, Red Spring studios, for blessing the players with the ability to bite him if you're an ass to him the entire demo. You truly know what we want

Lore seems to indicate that Ais came over from the demon realm for some unknown reason, and was possibly some kind of demon king or leader? Fascinated to learn what happens there

Ngl the Seaspring looks like it would taste good. My favorite raspberry/rhubarb tea looks just like the Seaspring water. Gimme the group juice.

Question: If Ais gets infected with MC's madness....does that mean. the WHOLE groupmind gets infected? Humans and soulless alike? That's a city-destroying disaster waiting to happen

CONCLUSION: Most likely to adopt 6 dogs instead of picking up the groceries. Least likely to let you have the car aux cable.

Kuras:

I do believe Kuras is the actual best shot at a cure/treatment of all candidates. Assuming the curse is some level of demonic, an angel's touch is probably the best bet.

Let me be clear here though, I do think he might just go "Well you can just like. not have arms" and take them. That is a possibility

Most of the other characters I can get a rough idea of what they want and why. Kuras? I have NO idea what his goal is, which is very frightening.

Twitter bio image does say "Repentant Angel", and that his fatal flaw is "his sins can only be repaid through suffering". Possible linkage to Lovent's fall? Or another major disaster?

its okay sweaty we all get The Guilt (tm)

If Kuras somehow gets MC's maddness (I have a feeling it may not effect him? but if it did) that would just. end the world right there.

CONCLUSION: Most likely to be the one guy you might be able to bring home to your parents. Least likely to put on oven mitts to take a frozen pizza out of the oven.

Vere:

I love Vere for being the character I thought I could trust the least, turning into a character I actually trust allot. I trust him to be extremely dangerous. He probably wasn't lying when he said his heart is on his sleeve.

Also, big props for having him just kill you in one of the demo endings. What a guy, I love him, no notes

Wait what he's over 100 according to his birthday post. thats, allot? older? than I thought?. okay yeah the lore posts mention he's a possible deity figure. not comforting

Vere is very fae-logic coded. Like, the words he says can be true and false at the same time. Don't tell him your name, he will cannibalize you for fun, etc etc ya know fae stuff.

i will protect him always

CONCLUSION: Most likely to fuck your dad. Least likely to be your new stepdad.

Mihn:

Mihn is much dodgier than the rest, but I think that makes them more trustworthy. They're not as interested as playing games.

I nominate Mihn as a secondary protagonist, since Leander, Ais, and Kuras seem to be interested in them quite a bit. Even Vere has a rivalmance kinda thing going for Mihn. If MC didn't show up, that would be the dating sim right there

I'm excited by the lore post and the implications that Mihn is from Lovent (or has traveled there? and survived?) and potentially getting greater lore expansion about the world surrounding Eridia

I think it's interesting that their strength stat is relatively low compared to the others, yet they're one of the characters that actually uses their strength in the demo.

Also, I think we see the least of their "monstrous form" of everyone in the demo (minus their ability to dodge in and out of shadows). I'm thrilled to see what their monstrous form actually entails.

Mihn would survive bloodborne. That's it thats the entire thought

CONCLUSION: Most likely to do all the work in a group project. Least likely to be chill during Mario Party.

Leander:

OKAY ALL OF MY QUESTIONS ARE HERE. I AM DEEPLY AFRAID. Something is absolutely wrong but we have no current ability to pinpoint what it is.

I've seen theories Leander is dead. However, in Vere's route, he mentions that Leander smells like aftershave. While this could be part of an extra-elaborate ruse, hair doesn't grow after death (Minus the appearance of it happening due to natural decay processes) so he wouldn't need to shave. However, I am betting on him being involved in some sort of un-death cycle.

actually I can guarantee his story is all about cycles. Has anyone else mentioned how his belt is the triple goddess symbol.

you know. the symbol of maiden/mother/crone. birth/life/death. beginning/middle/end. like

Moving on, the vast majority of his smiles are forced (Mouth is smiling, but there's no eye movement/crinkle that would indicate it's genuine). That is enough of a red flag but honey I am so much more worried about my next point:

WHERE DOES HE GET HIS MONEY. He's constantly buying rounds of drinks for a packed bar. It's briefly mentioned his clothes are nice. He pays for anything MC needs. However, says Bloodhound rates are "Free". Where does he GET HIS MONEY for all of this. Twitter posts from Red Spring point out he doesn't accept bribes (at least overtly).

WAIT I'M REREADING THIS POST WHAT THE FUCK ARE THE SILENT CRYPTS.

Looking again at Leander's stat post. The Ouroboros in the background is. Not comforting. Also, "Forbidden Magic"? yeah I have a feeling we know why he's not in the Senobium

Theory, potentially Leander is currently being paid by the Senobium to maintain lowtown/Silent Crypts order? I think there's still a connection between them. Like the Senobuim can remain detached while having ties to whatever horrible things Leander is doing.

Okay, in the twitter relationship charts it says that Kuras has looked out for Leander "Since he was young". Kuras probably knows. SO much we don't.

When Mihn scolds Leander for not telling MC to be off the streets past dark. I think Leander intentionally "Forgot" to mention that. I think he wanted the MC to see how dangerous Eridia was so MC would stay closer to Leander for safety. I think it was a very intentional manipulation tactic.

(Furthermore, did he actually cast a spell of luck on MC when he gave them the lilies from his introduction magic trick? Then bet on the MC living through the day?)

I do think Leander's surprise at MC going out to the Seaspring was genuine, since his spit-take clashes so starkly with his cool-guy demeanor.

I also have a feeling that Leander has been past the veil/shroud. he's doing something fucky and the veil is prime fuckery territory.

(Are we...going to get a timeloop story????)

CONCLUSION: Most likely to dramatically use himself as a human bridge over a small puddle (as an excuse to get walked on). Least likely to remember to go to bed after playing Stardew Valley for 13 hours straight.

Touchstarved game things I'm concerned about:

(I feel like I wouldn't be doing my game designer duties if I didn't point out my concerns as well. To be fair, there aren't many.)

I hope the bad endings get fucked up, story-wise. Since it's a horror game, I know it might turn some people off to have things go super wrong, but I really hope they do. I want to see some endless pain vortexes, some real Juniji Ito-style suffering. But I would also understand if the devs want to softball some of the worst outcomes for the sake of widespread appeal.

We all have countless examples of kickstarter games looking strong out the gate, but then falling flat upon release. While I have high hopes for Touchstarved, I do know the reality and intense difficulty of kickstarter games. I'm really hoping the demo isn't the best the studio will have to offer.

OVERALL: I am rooting for the Touchstarved team/Red Spring Studio all the way! I'm thrilled to see where this game goes. I am poised on this purchase button and ready to buy when it releases.

What's does it say about me when Overhaul and Dabi are my top two favorites in MHA?

Just as Tomura Shigaraki parallel's both Dabi and Overhaul, so do they.

Yes, Kai Chisaki was founded and adopted by Pops. He had a home, someone to care for him and raise him, but he wanted more. To repay Pops and raise the Shie Hassaikai's glory and power back from the edge of extinction.

Touya, unlike Tomura and Kai had no one. He tried to go back home, back to his family, but witnessing that nothing had changed even with the three years that he was gone and comatose, he left.

Hero society and citizens turning a blind eye to children in clear need of help, refusing to step in and wait for a Hero when they could have helped, reached out a hand when they were literally right there!

So many falling through the cracks and forgotten.

Outcasts and broken, being forced to pick up the pieces and shoving them back in themselves, all crooked and jumbled, holding on by sheer will alone.

They are both well written characters and villains, driven and obsessive about fulfilling their goals.

In a messed up and twisted way, they were right. Even if it doesn't justify what they did.

Wanting to tear down Hero society.

Wanting to be seen and acknowledged by their fathers figures.

Wanted to be praised and accepted, loved.

Leaving their old names and lives behind to become terrifying Villains in their own right. Pushing themselves to the brink of insanity, justifying their actions and twisted morals.

Becoming the monsters they become.

A demon with no heart.

Frankenstein monster, half alive and half dead.

People can argue that they didn't care about anyone, but themselves, but they're wrong. They did care. They cared too much. Giving up everything: their pasts, their present, their futures, their time and energy, all of it for someone else and got burned for it.

Endeavor and Pops. -_-

Nearly killing themselves over and over again for someone else's dreams and ideals.

Anyone can become a Hero in someone else's eyes when you've reached the lowest or darkest part in your life. Doesn't matter to that person if they are a Hero or Villain. They were their when you needed them most.

False Heroes and the true destruction of quirks growing more powerful, unstable, accepted or rejected depending on your power.

We see the men behind the monsters.

Glimpses of who they truly are underneath the mask they wear and strong front, hiding their insecurities and weaknesses. How truly frail they are beneath their powerful quirks, hidden behind the shadows and darkness they surround themselves in.

Two clearly traumatized men who went through so much physical and mental suffering from a young age compared to most normal, healthy kids. Bottling up their repressed issues, mental scars and striving forward, to be seen, to be loved and accepted in the form of destruction and tipping the balance of "peace" that's covered by the Safety Commission. (That's a whole can of worms that I understand, but frustrates me to no end!)

Instead of choosing to living for themselves and finding their own form of happiness, they instead chose to give their all for someone else's sake and paying heavily for it.

There's a very thin line between: love and hate, revenge and forgiveness, acceptance and ignorance, sanity and insanity.

Good and Evil.

All of it, can change a person.

We see it all, time and time again in fandoms, not just in MHA.

Despite what we already know, theirs still so much that we don't.

So many mysteries, unanswered questions and pieces of both Kai's and Touya's pasts are unknown.

They were both considered candidates for AFO's new body, but were considered failures.

Kai could have escaped the orphanage and been experimented on by The Doctor. Been called a monster, non human. His quirk might have killed his parents or previous guardian's on accident when it manifested similar to Eri's.

We never see him smile, hear him laugh or god forbid make a sound when he's in pain after being hit with both Lemillion's and Deku's powerful punches and attacks. Yes, he's mentioned that overhauling and fixing his own body is painful, but it's clear that he's used to the pain.

Yes, he's grunted and hissed, but hardly flinches. No doubt being forced to fix himself over and over again, growing numb to the pain.

With Touya, all of the mental shock and physical changes after he had awakened, after being burnt alive. You don't tell someone something so live changing right away. It should have been a slow process. Hell, we didn't see him eat anything before giving the poor boy the shock of his life.

Seriously? What the hell was AFO and The Doctor thinking? No, I take that back. They were hoping to use Touya for their own selfish gain and plans.

As fucked up as it is. I'm glad that they both got away from those mens clutches.

God, I just want to give both them hugs, even if they shove me away.

so the first thing is that i can't read the last two chapters without crying so congrats?

the third thing is that glinda's depression is written so well it's insane. her thinking elphaba died by suicide is possibly one of my favorite headcanons ever i love making her suffer (/pos)

on that note i am this close to writing a fic of glinda post canon based on your fic

Hi!! Yes, I am!!

First of all, I'm so glad you like it so far! It makes me so happy when other people enjoy the random shit that wor vomits itself out of my brain, lol! If it makes you feel better I almost cried writing chapter 13, genuinely.

Second, I'm so glad you like how I'm writing them. All 3 of them, but Glinda especially, have been so important to me since I first saw Wicked when I was about 7ish, and I try really hard to stay true to that. They're all such complicated characters who all(and yes, I said ALL) make some awful decisions, but they're not bad people, not really. They're just people who make shit decisions and then do their best to fix them They are also children, and I feel like too many people miss that part. Fiyero, who is the oldest of the 3, is maybe 21 when the show starts. They're babies, and that's such an important part of their characters and such a big part of what drives their decisions, and I feel like too many people just ignore that.

Third.... yea. just yea. Glinda goes through a lot in the course of not a lot of time and then just has to deal with that. While also having the entire weight of a very shitty and corrupt country on her shoulders and having to fix all of that. Alone. After watching the 2 people she loves, most die less than 2 weeks apart. That being said, I think she was depressed and anxious long before she met Elphaba. Glinda is raised by upper-class parents to be perfect. As someone who was essentially raised to be a Southern Bell, that's not easy. She likely had immense pressure on her to look, act, and speak a certain way. She was probably punished if she messed up, probably not physically, because, god forbid, they accidentally "ruin" their perfect daughter, but they would punish her in other ways, such as silent treatment, no dinner, shaming, and things like that. That would stick with her and shape her mental health, and not in a good way. Everything that happened after arriving at Shiz just made that a lot worse.

Four, please please please write the fic! That sounds amazing and I would definitely want to read it!!

Five, yea. As someone who's been passively successful almost as long as I've been a conscious human, it definitely hits hard, but I think that's what makes it powerful. Glindas not going to do anything to herself, at least not anymore (immediately after their deaths is another story, so is what happened before they died) however, if someone, maybe perhaps a certain scarecrow-shaped prince, were to point a gun at her, she wouldn't do a whole lot to convince them not to pull the trigger.

Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed it, and I'd love to read whatever fic you come up with or whatever else you have to say about mine !! 🫶🏻

The fact that he went insane before committing atrocities certainly makes it easier to forgive than if he’d just gone bad. Some fans used to believe that, but I think by now most people realize he really did lose his mind. Square has tried very hard to emphasize that, perhaps aware that some people thought otherwise.

have you ever distanced yourself from your Blorbo / have you ever left a fandom because people in the fandom were being too toxic? I don’t think I’ve ever really stopped loving a character, but I have definitely left some toxic fandoms/areas of fandoms.

have you ever gotten involved in ship wars? Years ago, perhaps a little. Not that I wanted to be, but it seemed like others dragged me into it if I liked a pairing they didn’t.

is your Blorbo canonically alive? Hmmm. Is he? To be honest, I really don’t know what Seph’s current status is considered to be! It’s complicated. But I’m going to say Yes.

do you like seeing your Blorbo suffer? No. Not unless it’s part of a hurt/comfort fic and there’ll be sweetness. And sometimes even then, I may not like the suffering. I can be picky about what kinds of problems I want to see in hurt/comfort fics. I’m even pickier now than I used to be.

do you ship your Blorbo with any character? Yes. Usually Cloud. Sometimes Aerith. And I love familial sweetness with Zack!

when it comes to Blorbos, do you have a type? They are often introverts. Usually kind. If they’re “bad guys,” there has to be something that attracts me to them, like a relationship with a particular character that’s intriguing or some hint of goodness still within them.

if you have more than one Blorbo, do you love them all equally? I have so many. I have hyperfixations where I focus on particular ones, but I’m not sure whether I love them all equally. Seph, for instance, means so very much to me and there’s a lot more connected with him than there is about some of the others.

if your Blorbo is from a live-action media, are you also a fan of the actor who plays them? Any that are from live-action things, yes, I am fans of the actors. I am also generally fans of the voice actors for characters who are not from live-action things. :)

would you still love your Blorbo if they were real? Talking of Seph again, I’m sure I would. The sane Seph, at least. I might struggle with the insane one, especially if I didn’t know what had happened to get him that way.

is your Blorbo a victim of badly written script / bad plot / character assassination in the hands of canon? Some people feel him losing his mind doesn’t make sense, and it is hard to swallow sometimes when he seemed so stable. But when you really stop and pick apart exactly why it happened and what led up to it, it does make a heartbreaking sense. And the more Square shows how good he was, the more devastating it is that he isn’t redeemed yet!

if you could change one canonical thing about your Blorbo, what would it be? He needs a redemption arc. And I don’t just want to see one from another dimension who never lost his mind; I want the ones who did lose their minds to be saved.

do you think this character will still be your Blorbo three years from now on? Pretty sure, yes. Seph has always been deeply special to me, even when he isn’t an actual hyperfixation.

Let's talk about one of my favorite games of all time, Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass.

I had originally started working on a different piece of art for this game, but that one is still a work in progress, since I have to get my shit together and draw multiple pieces of furniture for it. That's why I decided to draw something easier first. And I say easier, even though I spent like two weeks on this. Man, I really don't have that much time to draw anymore since I started working at my new job... Sometimes I really miss my old job, where I could finish all my work in an hour and then read Transformers fanfictions for the rest of the day. Sigh...........

I tried out a bunch of new stuff with Buck here, like finally learning that there actually is an Overlay function in Gimp and then promptly using it for the fancy effect on the line art, the pattern on his wings and the background. This image also made me realize I can only draw giant Mega Man boots. That's why his shoes look like that, lol.

Now let's finally talk about this game. If you don't know anything about Jimmy, it's a Mother inspired game about a little boy fighting horrors in his dream world together with his family and some other wacky characters like the coolest man you have ever seen, an anime waifu and a bear. The game starts off like a typical RPG where his mom sends Jimmy and his brother, Buck (pictured here in this image, I'll explain why he looks like that in a minute), to fetch some honey for a cake she wants to bake. And to get that honey, the two brothers visit the beehive that's located south of their house. On the way there, they have to fight various goofy looking monsters in turn based battles. Jimmy unlocks the power of empathy and imagination at the start of the game and can turn into some of the monsters he defeats in battle, by putting himself in their shoes. Examples include a smelly green blob that was living in his brothers dirty clothes, a sunflower that was getting freaky with some of the bees, a very fast bird, and a bear.

When they finally make it to the beehive, the queen explains that a group of thugs is bothering them and promises to give Jimmy some of their honey if he takes care of the ruffians for her. The so called "petty thugs" are located in a canyon right next door, so Jimmy and Buck go and beat them up. After various shenanigans, including a "goon exam" and Buck breaking some bartenders spine after he refused to serve Jimmy some milk, they have a battle with Punch Tanaka, the worlds raddest guy and also the leader of the thugs.

I think this is a good time to mention that this game is freaking hard. Punch was the first fight in the game where I lost a couple of times, since it really takes you a while to learn all the games battle mechanics. I didn't truly understand the power of Startle/Alert until I was halfway through the game. That's on me though. I'm stupid. Still, later boss fights can get insanely difficult if you don't know what you're doing. (Looking at you, Lingering Eyes....) After kicking the thug leaders ass on the first try, the whole gang flees the canyon, but not before Punch warns Jimmy that he doesn't know what he's up against. He's not talking about himself or his gang, but his employer. And we soon find out who that employer is...

Back in Giant Garden, Jimmy and Buck make their way over to the beehive again, only to be confronted by a trail of green liquid that leads from the throne to a door in the back of the room. The atmosphere suddenly turns very eerie, with the whole hive being shrouded in darkness, the background music being replaced by a frightening track that sounds like someone held a microphone right inside a dying swarm of insects, rightfully titled "Cacophany of Bees" and the enemies you fight on your way deeper into the hive being horrifically mutated, suffering, cannibalistic versions of the bees you fought beforehand. This is the first time in the game you come into contact with a so-called "nightmare dungeon", if you ignored the secret one you can unlock in the canyon.

These nightmare dungeons all represent one of Jimmys fears, because, as you can probably recall, we're playing through the dreams of a ten year old boy. Maybe he was stung by a bee in the past and that's why he developed a fear of them? (Doesn't help that his brother loves to terrorize the poor things...) The other nightmare dungeon themes only get worse than bees: spiders, heights, drowning, haunted houses, math, eternal sleep ...and bears.

Coming back to the beehive, after trekking through a plethora of gore and dead cartoon insects, Jimmy and Buck get confronted by the now heavily mutated queen of the bees, who has some of the most chilling dialogue in the entire game.

"Jimmy... Jimmy, where did you go?

I can't see well, Jimmy.

I can't hear well, Jimmy.

I can taste blood, Jimmy.

It's dark and I'm alone. It's dark and I'm alone. It's dark and I'm alone. It's dark and I'm alone. It's dark and I'm alone."

In the end it turns out that the title-giving pulsating mass is behind all the terrible things happening to Jimmy's dream world, like employing the petty thugs to terrorize him, corrupting the poor bees, the nightmare dungeons, etc etc. And after Jimmy and Buck finally get back to their house, they arrive just in time to see their whole family getting kidnapped by a space ship. Even the two brothers get beamed up into the ship. All part of the pulsating mass's master plan...

Now I won't go into detail and tell you the whole story of the game (even though I really want to), but you can expect the game to get even darker later on. Normally, I don't enjoy playing really dark and gritty games, but thankfully, since this game was inspired by the Mother games, it still retains some of the funny and heartwarming moments that the series is known for. And I like that a lot. If the heartwarming moments balance out the horrors, then I can deal with the horrors. (TVTropes has this very fitting trope called "Too bleak, stopped caring", which Jimmy masterfully avoids with its charming, yet flawed characters and ridiculous moments that genuinely make you laugh, like the whole game shifting into an entirely different genre for one specific area.)

I'll try my best not to get into too heavy spoilers (that's reserved for the other piece I'm drawing), but I think I still need to explain what happened to poor Buck here. Just like the queen bee, he's been taken over and corrupted by the pulsating mass, after saving Jimmy from a murderous bear. (As you can tell, there are a lot of bears in Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass. Or is it always the same bear? Better play the game and find out!) After the dreaded bear boss fight happens and Buck gets dragged down into a hole, Jimmy and their mother Helga jump in after him, but you don't see him again until way later in the game, where he suddenly sports this massive pair of veiny wings, his slightly deformed skin and muscles have turned into a deep shade of purple and his eyes glow in a menacing red. There's also no talking to him, since his normal grumpy personality has been turned up to eleven and he's completely blinded by rage, actively attacking and sabotaging his family members in their quest to stop the pulsating mass.

He gets better though. Don't worry.

What I find really interesting about this character is that he genuinely loves his little brother and wants him to get stronger and more independent, but the way he tries to accomplish this is just really really... bad. In a late-game dungeon centered around Buck you find out that he's actually responsible for all the horrifying abominations and gore making their way into Jimmys head. How, you ask? By showing him a bunch of thrillers and splatter movies that were definitely not meant to be seen by a ten year old boy. Just to "toughen him up". Another dungeon centered around him, titled "The Abyss" (which is just a memory zone and not a nightmare zone, despite the scary title) implies that Jimmy is actually a little scared of his big brother. As I've said, all of Jimmys family members are deeply flawed people. (Don't even get me started on his uncle. Oh BOY. More on that in my next essay.) But I think it's nice. I think it makes the characters much more human. Much more relatable. Because despite all the horrible things his brother put him through and despite how scared he is of him, Jimmy still loves him a lot. And over the course of the game you get to understand that despite how imperfect and dysfunctional Jimmys family is, they're all there for him in the end to help him fight against the pulsating mass.

Man, I have so many feelings about this game. That's why it's one of my favorites of all time.

But before I'm done yapping, one more thing about Buck: The fact that he's an older brother, was presumed dead after going missing and reappears later in the game completely changed with a big pair of wings reminds me a lot of Claus from Mother 3. And since he's one of my favorite video game characters ever, Buck gets a lot of points in that regard alone. But enough with the Mother comparisons, other reviewers (Am I a reviewer now?) have already done that in massive amounts.

Muu drabble incoming!!

Kurt Stachler and Borderline Personality Disorder

i'm specifically focusing on the Arles Fight. Perhaps I am going to sound insane, but as someone with BPD, I see some of myself in Kurt (and also Gilbert.)

I'm gonna be going into a bit of depth on what Borderline Personality Disorder is like, and what people with BPD experience. It's a heavily stigmatized disorder, but ultimately, like many Cluster B disorders, it stems from trauma. People with BPD deserve love and sympathy, and they CAN flourish with proper help and care, just as anyone with any disorder can.

In this scene, Kurt is an asshole, obviously. But if you read it through the leanse of "he has BPD" he becomes much less of an "asshole for no reason" character and more of an "asshole we can be sympathetic towards."

Kurt jumps to what would usually be an insane conclusion (a did end up being correct but I digress.) In any other normal circumstance, coming to the conclusion of "my friend doesn't want to hang out with ME because he's in love with someone else. Obviously." And in that conclusion jump, he goes as far to compare him to someone like Blough, calls Gilbert a faggot, and ends up getting his ass beat lmao.

THAT SAID, Kurt holds an infatuation with Serge. In one of Keiko's notes about him, she states he has a "reverential affection" towards him. However, he also gets mad at him a lot, especially during the Arles fight he goes as far as to say:

"He's not so great after all, I don't want anything to do with him!" and storming off.

Kurt, despite this "reverential affection," often shows frustration towards Serge (and frustration in general) but then on the next page, he's defending him with his life.

This is where, as someone with BPD, I relate to him a lot, and why I say he could be seen as someone with BPD or at least shows the symptoms.

With BPD, you suffer from extreme mood swings and tend to see things in a "black and white" sort of way. Either someone loves you, or someone hates you, there's no nuance or middle ground...it's one extreme or the other (which is referred to as splitting in BPD terms.)

ALSO with BPD, comes extreme attachment. An FP, or "Favorite Person" is someone a person with BPD heavily relies on, they seek validation and attention from that person, and/or they look up to them and idolize them.

With that attachment comes that black and white world view where, since those with BPD are highly sensitive, anytime someone (especially an FP) says or does something that makes someone with BPD feel hurt, the irrational BPD brain will want to frame it in a way where the other person was being deliberately harmful, even if the person with BPD logically understands otherwise.

It's a cycle that sometimes, those with BPD don't even realize they're going through that cycle until they are diagnosed. And especially at 14 in the 1800s...you're not going to know what the hell is wrong with you and why you feel angry all the time, or why you keep flip-flopping between loving and hating your best friend. Terms like "splitting" and "Favorite Person" didn't exist yet. Hell, the first BPD diagnosis didn't even happen until 1938!

Kurt is canonically described as jealous. He's jealous of Gilbert, and jealous of the closeness he's developed with Serge (whether he's jealous of their actual relationship, you can argue yes or no, but he's envious that Gilbert is closer to Serge than he is.) He's highly sensitive to when Serge chooses Gilbert over him and it causes him lash out.

Impulsivity, jealousy, intense emotions, irritability, all of these are incredibly common in BPD, and ALL of them are traits I'd argue Kurt has.

What we DON'T know for a fact of if all of this behavior comes with or comes from a fear of abandonment. BPD always comes with an intense fear of abandonment and/or being left alone. Almost all erratic behaviors that come from those with BPD stem FROM that fear.

Now. Kurt is a side character. He doesn't have a backstory, he doesn't have an actual explanation for how he acts outside of "he's moody." He doesn't have a plot line that explains if he has a fear of abandonment, or had some sort of traumatic childhood to cause this disorder in the first place, or if he's just like that for no reason. This is all a reach, obviously...all of my drabbles are, but my reaching is based off what I see in Kurt and how I relate to how he reacts when reading through Kazeki, my thoughts aren't based on nothing.

TL;DR, I have BPD and see a lot of my own traits displayed in Kurt therefore I'm giving my diagnosis to him. Kurt Stachler I will ALWAYS defend you. Amen.

So I know this is sort of unrelated to the brackets, but you seem familiar with a lot of bls since you run this blog and have a large following of bl enthusiasts. I think it would be cool if there could also be a way to give people recommendations (you or your audience) so we could be more familiar with all the people in the polls (besides just watching a show blindly).

Oh this sounds like a lovely idea! I've definitely already discovered dramas that I hadn't known about before through this (I mentioned in my response to the question about my favorite BLs but I discovered DNA Says Love You from someone submitting one of the characters from it lol). I've only really been in the BL fandom for about a year and a half, so I have lots more I can learn and would love to hear more about dramas that I might not be as familiar with from y'all too!!!

I can start by giving a few recs of some of my favorite lesser known dramas! (Though y'all can give recs for well known dramas as well!)

Ghost Host Ghost House (2022): Kevin has come from America to visit his extended family in Thailand and to also do some ghost-hunting for his ghost hunting show online. While he's there, he meets Pluem who works for his family and is also terrified of ghosts. Things get more complicated when it becomes increasingly clear that Kevin's family is hiding something from him. I loved this show so much (binged it all in one night when I couldn't sleep)! The chemistry between Kevin and Pluem is insane and so sweet! The story itself is also great and emotional and really hits you in the feels. The main problem this drama suffers from is being too short. I think it would have greatly benefited from an extra couple episodes to flush out some more of Kevin's character and backstory, but it still is a fun watch!

My Tooth Your Love (2022): Bai Lang is a restaurant owner with a crippling fear of dentists and a bad toothache. He gets dragged by his older sister to the dentist office where one of her juniors from university is the owner/head dentist, Jin Xuan. Bai Lang reluctantly begins to trust Jin Xuan more and the two get closer, but Bai Lang is struggling with a lot more than just a toothache. Despite its silly premise, the show definitely gets a lot more serious and dark at times and definitely made me cry at a few points. Again, the leads have great chemistry and the main thing the story suffers from is its length as some of the B and C plots get lost, but it still gives a satisfying story for the main plot and is definitely worth it!

Jack O' Frost (2023): Salaryman Fumiya and illustrator Ritsu have been dating for some time now but after a fight, the two break up and Ritsu runs out of their apartment. While he's out, he gets into an accident and gets amnesia, completely forgetting who Fumiya is entirely. Fumiya, who regrets breaking up with Ritsu, sees this as a new opportunity to start again and hopefully get the relationship right this time and decides not to tell Ritsu that they had been dating and had broken up. But Ritsu wants to regain his memories and has the growing feeling that something is off about his relationship to Fumiya. This normally isn't my cup of tea (I'm not big on stories about breaking up and all of that) BUT I really liked this one. It's just such a pretty show with such a profound sense of loneliness in it, especially as it hops between flashbacks of Fumiya & Ritsu's relationship when it was going well and when it was falling apart and then cuts to how things are now. The guy who plays Fumiya really hits for me. I know the last episode was a bit of a hit or miss for some people but I liked it (and also it seems like final episodes aren't always the strongest element of the BL industry). This is also not a show to watch if you like happy stories or healthy relationships lol.

It was Mr Bones’ Wild Ride.

The very very long version?

Sorry if this sounds like recapping. But I just wanna ramble about things I liked that stood out to me.

It’s crazy the emotional whiplash one show can put you through.

When I’d started watching Katta era back in the winter of 2022 (yes my watch has taken that long) it would genuinely give me headaches from how fast paced and outlandish the comedy was. It honestly felt like it took hours but then I’d find out I only watched two episodes. And despite all the comedy, it still sucker punched me with heart wrenching emotional moments. The mix of comedy and drama didn’t even feel that out of place. Sure, it dragged on if too many joke eps are in a row, but when the serious moments start I wasn’t like “what is this shit doing in my funny joke comedy show.” Also by the end of it I was starting to lose my mind and really enjoy most of the comedy eps.

It’s like a pendulum that swings back and forth between the extremes of both ends, creating a really…interesting… experience., I used to be really edgy and like only dark things, but in my years I have become aware of how you need light to realize the depths of the dark. And duema is like that but if it punched you in the face.

Being able to see characters be stupid and happy makes you feel worse when things go to shit. And the extent of how bad things can go to shit makes you grateful for having comedy eps.

(I say, like I wasn’t cursing and yelling at comedy eps for how they hurt me by being brain-meltingly insane.)

But to actually talk about specifics in plot and characters, tbh I’d say Lulu and Katta are probably my favorite characters.

To start with Katta, he’s sure a guy to watch. He just does things. And things just happen to him. And as much as I hate to say it he’s a very satisfying character? He morbidly fascinates me. Every annoying trait of his builds a very unfortunately believable profile. He’s a hot-headed, dense, selfish, petty middle schooler who likes curry bread, clout, hamsters, and boobs. He was stillborn, revived by a miracle, spent much of his early childhood in a hospital, and lives in the shadow of his brother who died to save the world.

But I like how even through his denseness, he still cares about his friends. Honestly to the point where he sometimes lashes out with violence before resorting to card games lmao. I’m sorry. He’s funny.

He’s a pretty simple guy with pretty simple wants, and that’s what makes him regrettably endearing to me despite how annoying he and his wants can be. He’s so thick skulled that he plows through most obstacles and nothing seems to ever truly get to him.

He’s a guy that I prayed for the downfall of. But when things actually got to him and he was suffering, I felt bad lol. It’s so jarring to see him sad.

And then he actually developed into slightly less of a bastard!!! He’s still annoying, but he’s truly realized the value of his friends! They keep him from falling to despair! Yay! and he saved the world. Yippee!!!

And for Lulu… as a card game heroine she is so utterly fascinating to me. I’m not like a super card game anime aficionado or anything, but erm. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a heroine they let be as genuinely fucking unhinged as her. Even later Duema heroines don’t match her prowess.

She’s just a normal girl. She’s just a silly girl. She also spent much her early childhood in a hospital. Her forehead shines like the sun. She has a genetic illness that makes her feel sickly and cough a lot. She can break buildings in half barehanded. She’s a little hopeless romantic. She’ll beat anyone who catches her daydreaming. She is on the grindset to marry Katta. She got cucked. The girl who cucked her only did it because she actually had a crush on Lulu and wanted to break her. She’s apart of toxic yuri.

And of course I’m a sucker for the epilogue.

Not only because of my boy Joe, but also because I love seeing how all the characters grew up. Katta and Lulu getting together was expected, but cute and I’m never going to complain. Also Duema was so fucking real for keeping Basa2 together. They’ve healed from wanting to destroy the world and now they can enjoy it!!!! Real!!!!!!!!

I have a lot more things I could ramble about but I’m really just gonna cut myself off here lol. Sorry Gyo, Lucifer, Duemouse, Rare Killers, Kazura, Basa2, and many others, but I don’t wanna make this any longer 💔

Anyway really fun show, I’d recommend it to no one. Stan this fucking thing.

Okay. Deep breath. Holy moly. Alright. Guess what, my friend? You just opened Pandora's box. You asked for spare details but I'm about to ramble for DAYS. Nima's got a full history and backstory (b/c I'm obsessive about this kind of stuff) that I haven't been able to explore in the story to the degree I want SO NOW YOU GOTTA SUFFER THROUGH PARAGRAPHS OF INFORMATION.

Just swear to me that you'll send me the finished result because I neeeeeeed it. You think I'm insane and feral now? Just you wait. Okay. Now, info dump waiting below.

So mentally the closest face claim I have for Nima would be the actress Seo Ye Ji (as in if Nima got to ever see the silver screen that's exactly who I would want hired to play her lol).

Nima is pretty average in height, and she's built firm. Not a body builder by any means, but you can see the strength in her arms and shoulders from the multiple years of working in a garage doing heavy lifting and being hands on. Her skin tone is a more pastel shade of pink, like a soft bubble gum pink, but her lekku both have a sprinkling of freckles all over them in a darker shade of pink. Her eyes are a dark brown, and she has freckles across the bridge of her nose and on her cheekbones that match the ones on her lekku.

Nima has no tattoos or piercings, she's terrified of needles. Markings of note though, she has a collection of scars along her arms (burns and cuts) from her work. Nima has a bad habit of getting excited when working on a project she's excited about and in her excitement she'll forget to wear gloves or cover her arms in the proper gear.

When she's working, Nima wears a pair of navy mechanic coveralls to protect her skin when doing more dangerous work, but as said previously, Nima has a bad habit of shrugging out of the upper half to tie the arms around her waist leaving her in either a plain tank top or sports bra. She does it to cool off, but often forgets to zip the upper body part back up before getting back to work. While on the job, there are three things she always has on her: a pair of work goggles either resting on her forehead or hanging around her neck, an old pair of work gloves she's kept forever despite their disrepair, and a matching set of dark brown work boots. All three were gifts from her father when she got her first job as a mechanic.

When Nima's not working, her style is all over the place. She prefers pants and shorts to dresses and skirts and tends to lean toward large, loose fitting t-shirts that she'll tuck into high waist shorts or pants. But, she's also a big fan of oversized hoodies, cardigans, and flannels for when the weather gets cooler.

A villain's girlfriend (fem!Canada x 2p!America)

A young woman in a skintight Harley Quinn outfit complete with giant hammer is standing in the center of the park looking around as the time passes. She leans on the hammer to balance as she sighs her purple eyes scanning the perimeter. She checks the time and sighs. Now, why is this lovely young lady standing out here? Cause her idiot brother made a bet with her saying that if she did this, he’d do her chores for the next month. She’s contemplating how much longer she has to stand there when a hand grazes her back. Quickly she turns to be faced with a tan, brunette man with piercing red eyes gazing down at her. “Hey doll, is this all for me?~” She turns away from him blushing.

“No, course not, I don’t even know who you are.” The man steps back a bit and looks at her. “Well, my name’s Al, what’s yours?” She glances up at him slightly. “My name is Madeline. So, what are you doing out here?” Al chuckles. “I was just out for a walk when I happened to come across a goddess dressed as one of my favorite characters.” Madeline rolls her eyes. “Oh right, the insane girlfriend.” Al shakes his head tsks. “Now, now, don’t diminish her character like that. She’s amazing, world class gymnast, Psychologist, sociopath and badass. She’s smart, athletic and takes charge. Nothing better than that.” As Al talks it’s almost like he seems proud of himself. Madeline scoffs. “So, you’re not just interested in the skintight outfit?” Al looks her over slightly as he smirks. “I mean, I wouldn’t say no, to a beautiful woman in a skintight outfit. But no, it’s not necessary. She’s just as hot in her therapist clothes. Course, I think you might be hotter.” He slowly puts an arm around her letting it rest on her hip. Madeline hits his chest and he backs up making a big show of being hurt. “Ow, violence, I think you broke a rib.” “I didn’t hit you that hard.” Madeline blushes looking around for any passersby who could see his dramatic display. “Come on stop that I barely hit you.” Al smirks. “Holding back on me then? Oh what a sweet woman, you must be so strong.” Al moves closer to her again. “I think for all my pain and suffering I’m gonna need something from you.” Madeline looks at him suspiciously. “What kind of something?” Al gently grabs her hand and holds it up slightly. “How bout a date? There’s a nice café not too far from here. I’ll pay.” Madeline laughs slightly and shakes her head at his proposal. “I’m not going to a café in this, but, if you don’t mind waiting for me to get changed. A café does sound nice.” Al smiles and kisses the back of her hand. “Sounds good, I’ll walk you home then.” Madeline takes her hand back and smirks at him. “I don’t think I want you to follow me home.” Al puts his hands up defensively. “Got it sure, be safe. I don’t need to know where you live. How about I meet you here, say 5 o clock. Then we can go out.” Madeline nods smiling. “Alright, we can do that.” Al walks around her a bit. “So, how much longer are you going to be out here like this?” Madeline watches his move taking a quick glance at his muscles through his open jacket. “A few minutes, I have to finish this dare.” Al nods a bit. “So uh, who gave you this dare?” Madeline sighs and shakes her head slightly. “My brother. He said if I wore this outside he’d do my chores.” Al chuckles. “I see, so I’ll have to thank him twice when I meet him.” Madeline tilts her head. “Why twice?” Al puts his arm around her and pulls her to his chest. “Well, once for getting you to wear this, and a second time for making sure you’re free for our date.” Madeline blushes off to the side her hands on Al’s chest as he starts to laugh holding her securely.

Hellooooo, I wanted to ask: Is there any Barbera related trivia you would like to share but will never get a chance to within the comic? She's my favorite and I'd always like to know more about her! Also I remember you mentioning that you have ideas for what the characters voices would sound like if they were say animated or live-action, do you have any voice actors/actors you'd cast?

Hey Anonym! Oh boy, I kept thinking about this question for a while. So. Barbera is the unfiltered asshole some might fantasize about letting lose when really frustrated. She's definitely a power fantasy for me (as are all of them.) Jaune has the same impulsive monstrosity about her, when pushed to the brim. But Jaune still does believe in people and wants to be accepted an have friends and feel welcome somewhere. I imagine Barbera to sound... raspy and smokey and hag-ery with a cat twang. That's very scientific. Sorry, I do not have specific voice actors in mind. The voice actor with the best cackle who can also sound very menacing and dark. Maybe Wendie Malick (who spoke Eda from Owl House) She is the It running wild, zero fucks to give. I'd appreciate she being spoken by a nonbinary voice actor. But to be very honest... I had to look up the names i'll be naming here. I don't know many voice actors. In the beginning I had this main idea about her, that she gets insanely obsessive about a certain question and will not stop at anything to solve it. And that her main motivator for following the lady was the lady having answers. Barbera is utterly disconnected from technology. The version I had in mind in the beginning would have had her head explode by wikipedia. Then again - she would go down the rabbit holes and lose her mind at insatisfactory sources. The many years of being left to her own devices degenerated her more. She never adjusted. She'd always be an asshole. Including as a kid. Her parents are neglectful scientists, who are disliked bei their peers but brilliant. She was a strange accident and raised herself. And very happy with that. I think in a nurturing environment, she'd still not be social at all, but she might not let the It run wild indiscriminately and would have turned out a fine mathematician some day. Coming home to an unfurnished block apartment and eating the same everyday. Probably toast and Nutella. And gluing razor blades to the playground, because those damn kids are too loud. One of the reasons for drawing twisted was wanting to draw splatter. I do not like violence in reality at all. I also don't like mindless violence. Barbera lets me draw this in droves. She doesn't need a reason. But it's more satisfying if there IS a reason. She's also too brutal to 'enjoy' her oevres. The Lady could let somebody life for years. Barbera's people don't survive more than 10 minutes. Gabriel... doesn't even realize that she's sometimes killing people. Jaune does not enjoy the suffering of others, but she seeks control over her own emotions by putting all the blame on others (which usually is warranted). But she's also always been jealous and 100% depended on what other thought of her. There are many snippets that will probably not make it into the comic. There is one where she convinces Gabriel, that the incinerator in the cellar needs regular feeding or it'll turn against them. There is also one where Gabriel invites her whole therapy group into the secret head quarters and Barbera REALLY enjoys having so many people at home who will definitely not be leaving again. For the other characters the voice actors... The Lady should be somebody who can sound soultry and seductive and very cold. I recently got goosebumbs with the Voice Acress who voices Lillith in Diablo 4 (Caroline Faber) and I also really, really like the narrator of Baldurs Gate 3 (Amelia Tyler). Voice actors are so incredibly versatile - I am sure many could pull that off. Jaune als has that cracking in her voice - as if a bit hoarse from laughing too much. She should sound giddy and young (but not like a child). I've heard the manner of speaking called "Valley Girl" sometimes, but I am not sure, if that's the correct term. Maybe Grey Griffin (Azula). Gabriel is no nonsense with German accent. I'd appreciate a German voice actor. I appreciate the questions a lot! Thank you!
