i was just going through overseas productions of wicked and as a death note fan i feel that i should bring this to your attention.

jeong sun ah, who played misa in the 2015 korean dntm production, has played glinda.

hamada megumi, who played rem in the 2015 and 2017 japanese dntm productions, has played elphaba.

that is all.

I think Death Note the Musical is literally the only show where I'm more excited at intermission than I was before the show. Usually even if a show has a really good second act, the first act is still clearly the highlight. But DNTM's second act is SO strong: we get "I am L," Misa's bangers, THE WAY THINGS ARE, gay tennis, Rem's power ballad, and the final confrontation. It's really such an incredible show

Favourite DNTM scene has gotta be mortals and fools i think. stalemate and twta close seconds... just !!! the way misa is so sure of herself and kira's love and how sure she is of it being reciprocated... and rem's pleading to try and convince misa love is nothing but bad. and ughhh ALL WHILE??? ALL WHILE SHE HERSELF FALLS FOR MISA??? OBSESSED.

i mean i could go on abt everything but i haven't watched the musical in full, so really all i know is the songs and im this obsessed yikes

MY AU!!! THANK YOU FOR ASKING!! TYTYTYTYSMMM

SO BASICALLY It's this au, where L, light and misa are best friends in their freshman year. misa is the most popular girl in school, she's basically a princess and everyone worships her. Light, her boyfriend, is the most popular guy in school as well the smartest. everyone wants to be his friend, or go out with him, or be him. as for him being the smartest, it's kinda true. he has this academic rival, l lawliet. they tie in everything. they have this very heated competition to who is the best at everything. all the other students think they despise each other, but that's actually far from the truth. they're best friends!! they have been since they five actually. they just both let their egos get the best of them. misa is just as part of the group as the other two btw!!!

so, the three are cast as the leads every year in the musical. they have been every year, this was how it worked, no one else seemed to have a problem with it either, so it went unchanged. misa and light were usually the romantic leads, and l would be the other male lead, like for example 7th grade, they were light/jack, misa/kath and l/davey in newsies! anyway, this year however, they find out, (to the boys horror) l and Light were cast as the romantic leads this time. anyway, this leads to painful revelations, healthy communication, unhealthy secrets and suppression and melodrama!!!

agjjddjk that's the main summary of it least. the fic will progress over the course of the year, with occasional flashback chapters bc their backstory in this au is probably my favourite part. there are many things still in development rn, like what to name the fic, and what their school musical should be, anyway yeah!! chapter 1 should be out soon, it's the first day of school :) yeah, tysm for listening!!! and asking ^_^

thoughts on the narrative parallels between misa and light in dntm? (im v bad at asking qs sorry)

okay you asked this just as stalemate came on lmao 😭 anyways, the scene where misa and light meet has been my favorite since i first watched it. even though they fucking RUINED IT in the 2022 script rewrite 🙄 whatever we’re just gonna focus on the 2015 jp script and lyrics because that’s the one i have open in my drive rn and i don’t feel like resetting my playlist

a lot of their parallels stem from rem and ryuk being very clear foils in the musical, what with rem seeing humans as beautiful creatures with the ability to love and ryuk just seeing them as egotistical beings who feel like they can control their fates. this is then projected into light and misa’s respective songs regarding their places as kira.

in hurricane (or in this case, death note), light focuses in on himself. HE was “chosen” for this. HE was god, and nobody else was. a rough translation of the second chorus is: “i am prepared to sacrifice myself // for the sake of that shining world // with my own hands // i am the only one who can do it!” it’s all about light. he talks about saving people and allowing them to smile, but he doesn’t focus on why. just that his actions do them good.

meanwhile, in i’ll only love you more (a secret message), misa focuses on what she will do for/with others, including light. for a fair comparison, i’ll take the second chorus from this song as well: “now i know the reason i was born // if we can meet // we will be stronger than everyone else // let’s show the world // the power of love” it’s about their union. it’s not about her saving him, it’s about them saving the world together.

anyways you asked for narrative parallels, not musical ones. i just got carried away i guess. anyways, i find it interesting that the way that they find their death notes are reversed. light picks it up by chance and assumes he has been chosen, while misa has been effectively chosen and believes it was some kind of accident.

something else i find interesting is how they even got to the point that they did. after killing mogi, misa tells light that “in order to meet (him,) (she) worked (herself) to death” which light immediately brushes off, causing mortals and fools (cruel dream) reprise to start. this is because, frankly, light didn’t work hard to get there. it just dropped in the street and he wrote some names down.

that’s all i’ll do for this ask lmao. if you want an idea of how long this took, i started writing with the first few lines of stalemate playing and now the playlist has reset to the end of where is the justice. so yeah this took a while 😭 hope you enjoyed reading my rambles

I've been suspecting the reason we haven't had any updates on the album and/or full West End production is because so much of the DNtMiC creative team has been wrapped up in the Your Lie in April concert. Remember, the producers didn't anticipate DNtMiC to have anywhere near the reception it did or they would have scheduled more than two shows from the beginning; I'm sure the YLIA concert was something they already had lined up and therefore needed to focus on before they could respond to the DNtM hype.

So how many people from DNtMiC are involved in YLIA? Let's look at the cast:

Just in the cast, we have Rachel Clare Chan (Sayu), Dean John-Wilson (L), and Jojo Meredith (listed in my programme as Haley Belle/Ensemble/Cover L, more specifically he played one of the cops and did not end up going on for L). Since it sounds like work on DNtM will start pretty quickly once the YLIA concert is over, that bodes well for these actors returning to the cast. I assume they'll push to get Joaquin Pedro Valdes (Light) back but Misa's actor is a toss-up; Francis Mayli McCann originated the role (in London anyway) and is included in the upcoming cast album, while Jessica Lee, who took over the role for the Lyric performances, was the one to perform On Borrowed Time at the Whats on Stage awards. That could be due to director preference or schedule availability or really any number of things so I won't speculate. Ryuk was also recast for the Lyric but Rem wasn't, and I imagine they'll do everything they can to keep Aimee Atkinson for that role since Rem is arguably the most important character to cast right.

Among YLIA's backstage team, we also find DNtM's director/choreographer Nick Winston, set designer Justin Williams, musical supervisor Katy Richardson, costume designer Kimie Nakano, casting director Harry Blumenau, and cultural consultant Yojiro Ichikawa, as well as production companies Carter Dixon McGill Productions, Indie Theatrical, and Pinnacle Productions. Of course Frank Wildhorn wrote the music and Jason Howland wrote the arrangements/orchestrations, but I'm not sure how much either of them will be involved in the full DNtM West End production since the show's music has been completed for almost ten years now.

There's probably even more overlap - what I've noted here is just the names from the article that I can find in my DNtMiC programme.

The above quote is slightly misleading in that it makes him sound a little less sure about NY DNtM - in the first five seconds of the interview video linked in the article, Wildhorn says he would "bet the house" that all three of these productions are happening!
