toto is actually the silliest goofiest mf and sometimes it shows on screen but he’s like that 24/7 with christian. like he’s so lovably awkward and clumsy, he’s so expressive with his face especially when he doesn’t have to control himself as much at home. so christian just gets round the clock entertainment for free and he loves it so much he stopped making fun of him for it years ago.

christian got super close with niki when he started dating toto. they built a real, genuine connection with each other, mainly because both were trying to figure out toto and his ways. meanwhile toto woke up one day and realised the two people closest to him were besties. it meant more to him than anything else because he never got to introduce christian or any partner to his father.

christian LOVES their home. he loves the farm work, he loves the animals, he loves the responsibility of having to care for it and look after it. he thinks it’s the perfect investment of their money. that said, it’s a complete misconception that toto is a city diva. yes he grew up in vienna but still very close to the mountains. he’s a very outdoorsy, active person and he loves to get involved in the farm life, even when he wears expensive shoes and hand stitched clothes and has to be taught almost everything. he’s a very quick learner, and christian loves to be the one who gets to teach him. they’re both extremely protective of that part of their life.

they started out as friends, way back when. they spent a lot of time in the paddock at the same time and they were the same age, so naturally they kind of gravitated towards each other. christian is self taught while toto came into the job a little differently, so christian was extremely sceptical of him at first. team principals come and go, and he wasn’t sure toto would be one to stay very long. but he proved himself over time, and again was very eager to learn, and never shy to admit when he didn’t know something or ask questions. toto generally is a very communicative guy which kind of opposes the more mellow superficially polite british way of doing things. but once christian realised toto was genuine, and that this was his only state of being, he grew fond of him extremely quickly, and even quite protective. not everyone in the paddock was as nice and perhaps naive as toto was. christian made sure to keep an eye on him, make fun of him to his face and in the press, but shut down everyone who dared to say a bad word against him behind his back.

toto grew out of that eventually too. with time came experience, and success, and one morning christian woke up and toto had managed to establish himself as one of the most respected and successful guys around. was he jealous? yes of course. but he is also fiercely proud, and fucking glad he gets to be the one to hold him at night.

their tenderness came with time. it was nothing that just happened to them overnight, it grew with the success and the importance. the more eyes were on them, the more they understood the significance of their connection and the rarity of what they managed to build with each other. the success grew for red bull, mercedes, and f1 as a whole, and so did their understanding that what they had was sacred and nothing to treat lightly. they became more protective of their peace and their time alone, of holidays and stolen moments in between, and of each other too. realising someone is the love of your life doesn’t happen lightly. they weren’t willing to lose it once they understood.

christian is extremely aware of people thirsting over his husband. especially in recent years it has taken to new extremes. social media is obviously its own world but even in real life people are swooning over toto left right and centre. there’s comments christian hears when they walk past that are overtly sexual, there’s always people following toto around or asking for pictures when it’s not really appropriate. it doesn’t necessarily make him jealous, because in the end he’s the one who gets to sleep next to him at night, but it does make him protective because toto has a good heart and sometimes he’s a little too blue eyed for christian’s liking. he’ll always smile and wave rather than tell someone no, and so sometimes christian deems it necessary to step in, put an arm around him and pull him along. toto will call him jealous or possessive with a crinkling smirk, but there’ll be a relieved edge to it, and christian knows that he actually likes it. they both know it’s not so much possessiveness as an instinctual protectiveness.

both christian and toto are perceived as quite stand-offish and reserved in public, despite their self confidence and willingness to be perceived publicly. like yes they helm big f1 teams and they do lots of public engagements and interviews but ultimately neither of them are very touchy feely, especially not with each other, not in public. the moments when they are are rare and special and they’re not the norm. however at home, they really are the total opposite which is funny cause no one really knows that this is what they’re really like around each other. christian is extremely affectionate with toto in his words and gestures. toto is extremely physical in his affection, which came to a surprise to everyone including christian in the beginning. but as soon as the doors have closed behind them, they both morph into these completely different people around each other; christian still jabs and provokes and makes jokes but they are affectionate and much softer, especially when they seek each other out physically. they love to share a space, they touch a lot, just small touches to backs and hips and hands and small kisses in between. it is another thing that has evolved with them, the comfort of such physical affection, but they both realise they’re too old to hold off on something they both want so badly. they kiss a lot. they touch a lot. they’re always kind of together, not in a clingy sense but because they enjoy hanging out and spending time with each other much more than spending time apart. they’ve got so little of it anyway, they make sure to make use of it.
