On the whole 'different schools not the kiss' idea, I think even if the distance is the ultimate issue the kiss will play a role... something along the lines of "we could survive this if we both went to Yale but long distance plus the lingering trust issues won't work for either of us" makes sense as a double-blow to Bughead. And as dumb and cliche as a cheating breakup is to me having Betty cheat, they get over that completely, but turn around and breakup for something else is just... odd...

I could foresee a scenario where the kiss complicates a long-distance relationship for sure. But overall I thought RAS’ post finale interviews were interesting and he gave us a lot to chew over. Here is what I took away from them:

-He said that the BA kiss drove Betty back to Jughead, and that she felt good about recommitting to Jughead. And this seemed to play out in 4x19.

-In contrast, he described Archie as “confused” and he also implied that Archie is going to finish his song in the prom episode, and that the prom episode will be a “dramatic” episode for Varchie.

-He talked about Bughead having a “difficult conversation” ahead of them with respect to going to different schools.

-It sounds like Jughead and Veronica are going to find out about the kiss in 4x20 (now 5x01) but they find out in different ways. So our theory that it was going to come out via a voyeur videotape in the finale and scatter the Core 4 prior to the time jump seems shot. My guess is that Archie’s song plays into how Veronica finds out, and potentially the voyeur tapes play into how Jughead finds out given that Bughead are still going to be investigating that mystery in the coming eps. I know we would rather Betty told him about it, but it is plausible to me that her fear of losing him or hurting him leads her to keep it from him and results in him finding out some other way.

-It sounds like RAS is reconsidering the time jump because of the COVID situation. At this point, we have no idea when season 5 will start filming or how long it will be. It sounds like we can be fairly confident that episodes 4x20-4x22 will now be 5x01-5x03 but that is all we know. I suspect that season 5 could be a shortened season - maybe 10 to 12 episodes depending on when they start filming. If that is the case then it might make sense to hold the time skip for season 6.

-All that said, it seems that there will be some time after the kiss is revealed for there to be emotional fallout from it. The Core 4 is not going to scatter to the wind immediately, and maybe not scatter to the wind at all in season 5.

At the end of the day, we do not know how long this hiatus will last or how it will play into their plans for season 5. But RAS’ comments did make me feel more hopeful for Bughead than I did in the midst of the 4x17-4x18 debacle. A lot of us felt that the kiss would be a devastating blow for Jughead because he has always been insecure about Archie and BA and the kiss would confirm all of his worst fears and undermine his faith in Betty’s feelings for him and how do they recover from it etc. Something I think @imreallyloveleee pointed out is, do Jughead’s insecurities become less tangible if we have Archie who is suddenly pining for Betty with Betty actively choosing to be with Jughead? Thus far, that is something we have not seen in Riverdale yet. We had Betty pining for Archie, and Archie rejecting her in early season 1 pre-Bughead. We had the BA kiss in season 2 when everyone was broken up that went nowhere. Not that this will make the betrayal cut any less deep, but if we have Archie actively confused about “do I want Betty or Veronica” and Betty not at all confused about who she wants, does Jughead feel less insecure? I think probably.

Also something @imreallyloveleee pointed out, and is something I’ve been thinking about as well, is that Jughead has shown a tremendous capacity to forgive his parents for some pretty fucked up shit. Jughead is the type of person who seems to really only let a few people “in” at any given time, but once they are there, he is extremely loyal to the people he loves. Like - even Archie, as poorly as the Jughead & Archie friendship has been developed over the years, Jughead has forgiven Archie for quite a lot and stuck by him. And who does Jughead love more in this world than Betty? That love and trust he has in Betty will of course make the betrayal hurt more deeply, but if he can forgive his father for being a semi abusive alcoholic than I am pretty sure he can forgive Betty for this. 

Jughead was also tremendously understanding and mature about the season 2 BA kiss. When I watched season 2, long before I joined fandom, I remember seeing the BA kiss and thinking “oh okay here we go” and then was pleasantly surprised when everyone got back together, and Jughead’s main point of contention was not the kiss itself but the fact that Betty kept it from him. But he was even understanding about that. Jughead is a pretty cerebral person, and I think if he could work it out then and come to terms with it, he can probably do so again. And of course I am sure he will be hurt that she kept it from him, but I do think he would understand it was out of a fear of losing him.

I do think it would be interesting to see them work past this, er... bump in their relationship only for the distance and separation to present as a real problem. Like maybe going to separate universities prevents them from having the time to work it out. Or maybe it makes the trust aspect of a relationship in that kind of situation more complicated as you suggest. Overall, if we are headed for a Bughead break up (and I certainly think we are if the time jump is still on the agenda) then I think at least adding in the twist of going to different universities makes it a more compelling break up storyline than just the BA kiss.

002 | Jellybean "JB" Jones

Yes, Jellybean, such a good choice!

002 | Give me a character & I will tell you

How I feel about this character: Jellybean is a goddamn delight. She’s such a preteen/early teenager with her grumpiness and her too-cool-for-you vibe and her Minecraft (which, btw, I’m still bummed they didn’t come up with an off-brand name for). She’s not much of a character because of how little we see her, but what we do see of her is pretty great, she’s such a little shit like her brother and also to her brother. And she was a little gang princess back in Toledo! Like, she worked on cars and had Lugnut (aka replacement Jughead) answering to her and had her little Serpent jacket at fucking eleven or twelve (although Riverdale seems to be pulling some of its timeline bullshit and ignoring how Jughead mentioned she was ten back in season 1), and I want to know more about that because it’s adorable. She seems really into cars and tinkering, what with her introduction working on cars and the way she dressed up as Rosie the Riveter for Halloween. Also, her little crush on Archie was so cute, she clearly shares her mom’s taste for hot dumb guys. Oh, also also, I love her slingshot and how good she is at using it. Like, she took out Penny! And omg “Drop the butterknife, bitch” is fucking iconic, I love her forever. Also, she’s clearly a smart kid, well-read like her brother and clever too, she even helped her mom study for the GED and picked up on the fact that something shady was going on with the faking-Jughead’s-death plot! (Side note: I love that everyone in the Jones family is smart except FP). I’d love to see more of her, but I doubt we will because of the five year time skip because I don’t think her actress could play seventeen/eighteen and it’d be weird to recast her. I assume we’ll have fiddled with her age and sent her off to college, which is a bummer because I really like her.

All the people I ship romantically with this character: You know, I kind of liked the idea of her with Ricky because of all the parallels between Jughead and Joaquin, but I was never invested in it because, well, they’re just kids with very little screentime. Honestly, I see her more as having a girlfriend in the future, but she’s so young and there are no other characters her age on the show that I don’t really ship her with anyone.

My non-romantic OTP for this character: Jones family feels, but especially Jughead! They seem to have a playful and teasing relationship that they both really care about. Their reunion hug was just the sweetest thing ever, and I love the way Jellybean sniped at him with the “kid Kerouac” comment. (Side note: I love that she knows who Kerouac is at eleven/twelve/whatever young age she is that can’t be more than thirteen) Jellybean, who generally comes off as so tough, is so precious when she’s like “Is Jughead here yet?” at Halloween. And the way Jughead takes that picture of him and Jellybean everywhere he goes, from the Drive-In to Stonewall, is just so sweet. She also seems a little bitter about Jughead leaving, which I really feel and relate to because my brother and I actually have roughly the same age gap that she and Jughead do. She probably has her own set of abandonment issues, and I really want to see more of Jughead being there for her. Also! That time the Gladys brought the Gargoyles into the trailer but Jughead and Jellybean thought they were breaking in or something and they both immediately drew their weapons (switchblade and slingshot) even though they had only been watching tv is the best thing ever. They’re little combat siblings! But Jughead was also standing protectively in front of her and it was just the best thing ever. And Jellybean also wants to help and protect Jughead, remember when she was so worried when she first figured out something was up during the Jughead-might-be-dead-but-we’re-also-faking-his-death plot? It was adorable and I loved it. I just love their relationship and wish I could see more of it.

My unpopular opinion about this character: I don’t think I have one? She’s a pretty vague character that I’m not sure there can be any controversial opinions about Jellybean because there’s such a wide variety of ways she can be interpreted.

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: I wish she had had more screentime with Jughead because they’re precious, and I also really wish I had seen her interact with Betty more. They both like cars and love Jughead and they live together, they have to have interacted some, especially when Jughead was still living there. Like, I’d love to see Betty and Jellybean’s first meeting where Jellybean is probably sizing her up and going “Are you good enough for my brother?” and Betty is like “This is Jughead’s precious little sister, I need her to like me”. Based on the Halloween episode, they don’t seem close, but I wish they had been. Like, surely there were times where they hung out with Jughead because he wants to spend time with them both, right? Especially during all those weekends where he comes back from Stonewall and almost certainly needs to spend time with them both because he doesn’t have time to do his homework and spend time with each of them individually? Because Jughead does seem like the type of brother who actually spends time with his kid sister. Like, I’d love to see the three of them together, especially an AU of Halloween where they actually got to spend it together, the three of them watching scary movies that I don’t think any of them are scared by. Oh, and I’d love to see the scene where Betty told Jellybean that they were faking Jughead’s death; I love that they kept her in the loop on that because letting her believe her brother was dead would be too cruel. And I bet they have similar feelings about their parents living together and could totally talk about it. Oh, and I’d love to see them swap embarrassing stories about Jughead. There are so many ways they could interact, and I just wish I had seen more of them.

My OTP: None, I don’t really do much shipping with her.

My crossover ship: Again, none.

A headcanon fact: She’s a well-read kid with cool taste in music, but she’s also destined to be a hipster who hates hipsters.

FICS I’VE READ THIS WEEK (43)

Hello everybody!!  I am currently living in an icebox. We’ve had “Extreme Cold Warnings” pretty much all week. It’s steadily -37°C (translates to -34.6°F). My windows are icing up on the inside. I’m drinking my weight in hot chocolate. My dog is driving me crazy because she never wants to go outside because it’s so freaking cold but she want to pee and play and do all the things. If I stop posting - it’s because I’ve frozen to death. Just in case anyone was wondering and gets worried.

ALSO. My Bughead Fluffageddon Rereadathon went really well this week. Happy fluffy fics definitely made me happy. If you have any other recs, I would love to reread them. I hope all of you are not overly distressed. My dashboard seems mostly interested in peeking at tattoos - so that’s fun. Jughead Jones sits down at his laptop, the feedback from his new publisher in hand. Instead of having a few weeks to fix grammar and sentence structure issues, and do a proper check of the chronology (his Dad still rags on Jughead getting his age versus high school graduation year wrong The Outcasts) that is likely a mess given the seven year time skips and significant use of flashbacks and references to past events.

He knows most of the changes make sense in terms of being a clean story... not bringing in a new character for the major drama in high school might please the publisher but he can already hear Veronica's rants about ruining her (second) husband's reputation... and giving the male lead other love interests may be more 'exciting' but he as always cannot imagine himself with anyone other than Betty even after all their history.

But he doesn't have time to worry... he's got to get to rewriting so he has a draft for the UPN producers who want to adapt both his books into a prime-time teen drama show.

Saw your bit at the end of the last post about Jughead not being punitive about the whole B/A thing. I'm curious, assuming 4x18 ends with B/A saying 'forget the kiss, don't tell V or J, we love them' but they get outed by a tape (which seems the most likely setup from what we've seen so far), what do you predict/hope Jug / V's reaction to be both short term and long term after the time skip? I think 'who cares, let's go to Pop's now' would be absurd, but I agree it shouldn't be too harsh either

I think I need to see how this plays out in 4x18 and 4x19 before developing a strong opinion on this. I can’t imagine J & V will be as understanding as they were in season 2 otherwise... like... what is the point. And it is a huge betrayal! They should feel betrayed. If this is going where we think it is going then Betty and Archie’s infidelity splitting up the Core Four and scattering them to the wind makes sense because how do you come back from that in the short-term.

But five years is a long time and maybe what you thought was a huge betrayal at age 17/18 does not seem as huge anymore when you are 23 and miss these people being in your life. To that end, I really liked @feisty-aquarius4 ‘s take on how things could go during/after the time jump.

On a less serious note, I do like to imagine what a Bughead break-up would be like in the Jones-Smith-Cooper household.

I imagine that Betty gets to keep the bedroom because, well, it’s her bedroom and so Jughead is relegated to sleeping on the couch in the living room. He wakes up one morning and finds his father staring down at him. 

FP, ever a Betty supporter, pats Jughead awkwardly on the shoulder and says, “You and Betty will work this out.”

And Jughead is like, “....she kissed Archie. You know, my best friend?”

And FP shakes his head and says, “Boy, you have forgiven much bigger sins from me over the years and I am half the person that Betty Cooper is. So you pull yourself together and go and talk to your girlfriend until you work this out.”

Meanwhile, Alice (I-Know-You-Did-It-Betty) Smith is up in Betty’s bedroom and speaking in a loud hysterical whisper, “Betty, be honest with me. Is that why you tried to kill Jughead? Because you wanted to be with Archie?”

And Betty, looking wildly around the room, desperate for something to save her from this conversation, hisses, “Mom, I told you. I did NOT try to kill Jughead. That was the Preppies!”

Jellybean is the one most on Jughead’s “side.” She starts doing things like adding lemon juice to Betty’s toothpaste and smearing peanut butter on her pillow.

Both Betty and Jughead are calling Charles trying to schedule time to do cool, FBI-related things and also making Charles SWEAR he won’t tell Betty/Jughead that they are going to him. Charles finds this really annoying. How can he and Chic ruin Betty and Jughead’s lives if they have done it to themselves first???

Alice and FP insist on Friday night dinners with the whole family and it is... awkward. Alice is still half-convinced that Betty tried to kill Jughead. FP wants them to get back together. Jellybean is trying to add vinegar to Betty’s food.

At one point, FP announces that if anyone was going to break up, he fully expected it to be him and Alice first. "FP!!!” Alice hisses.

Pretty sure 'move in with Betty Cooper permanently' has been at the top of Jughead's to-do list since the first time they woke up together on FP's couch.

Totally!! Jughead’s dedication to trying to get Betty to move in throughout season 3 is so precious. Like, I am pretty sure after the initial shock wore off that his mother bought Betty’s house, it took his brain about three seconds to immediately careen to: “But Betty can just stay and keep her bedroom and we could just be together all the time :D :D.”

Whenever I get heavily invested in a new fandom, I just want to talk about ALL OF THE THINGS and since I was not in fandom for seasons 1 - 3, I have so many pent up thoughts to share. Love all of these thoughts. enough the proposed time jump might make them millennials (barely) if Riverdale is in the past and the time jump catches them up... is Betty RHS Class of 2020 or Class of 2014?? Anyone got a screen shot of the yearbook?

I am pretty sure in the musical that Kevin referred to his generation as “gen z” which would be more accurate than millenials but I am not going back and re-watching 4x17 I mean suffering through it once was more than sufficient. Good point about the yearbook, someone has to have a screencap?!

Just to be honest I can't imagine Jughead staying in town, much less the house, after finding out about B/A... but I could see all of that happening for a more 'mild' breakup and JB being like that even if her big brother is gone.

FOR SURE. In the Betty-in-college fic I am writing, she is the one who takes off immediately which presumably gives Jughead the space to stay in his house. But I like to amuse myself. The sheer awkwardness of breaking up while you live together in the same house as your parents who are also dating.

FICS I’VE READ THIS WEEK (40)

Hello everybody!!  What a week. I found out that an old website on which I used to read HP fanfiction that was taken down in like 2015 has been archived.... and so I read some old OLD fics that I used to read. I don’t know if it’s because writing has gotten better, or if I’ve just become more pretentious, or if nostalgia is really just a thing - but most of those old stories aren’t as good as I remembered them. Several times I found myself shrieking silently that maybe something was a little dub-con and makes me uncomfortable, when I don’t remember being so squeamish before. Ah well - growth, I guess.

Wasn’t the Inauguration wonderful? Michele Obama was serving lewks. And while I haven’t actually SEEN last night’s episode of Riverdale - the gifs and amazing summaries have been fabulous. Thanks for sharing all your talents, guys! I would be lost without you. 

But the most exciting news for me this week was that I bought Turnips on Sunday for 90 bells a piece - and yesterday, I sold them on an island for 560 bells a piece. The first thing I said to my husband when he walked in the door was “I made 2.4 million dollars on the stalk-market!” and he was momentarily excited but then realized he did not get to actually quit his job. Alas. lol.

Anyway - I hope you’re all staying healthy and staying safe. 😘

FICS I’VE READ THIS WEEK (31)

Okay, folks. This week I got sucked into this very kinky spiral of very very kinky Reylo fic (and I blame John Oliver completely) - I’m horrified that I’ve spiraled so badly and for the first time since starting this run down, I didn’t review a small handful of fics. I didn’t add them to my nifty spreadsheet and I won’t be adding them to these lists... but seriously, it’s all John Oliver’s fault. lol. I vow to do better next week. Seriously. I’m kink!shaming myself. lol.

Additionally, I’m unsure whether it should count when I reread @anonlady​’s wip story in full every time she updates it? Because I do. Every time. It’s amazing.

Anyway - the weather outside is frightful, we put up the Christmas tree on Sunday (and it’s lovely), and there are stricter measures in my province - it’s very scary and concerning. Please take care of yourself and stay healthy and stay safe. 😘

14 years ago, on the very same night, two things happened:

Hal Cooper gave into his darkness after a fight with his wife Alice due to the Register's financial issues, and over the following weeks while fearing that someone would find the body he hid on the Southside of Riverdale, the man sold his family's legacy and moved his wife and young daughters to Virginia to work at a paper in Richmond

Hiram Lodge got a bit too over confident with some Russians in Queens and was killed, causing his widow to flee back to Riverdale with their infant daughter, buying the Register from her old classmate Hal and moving it to a mostly online publication staffed with interns from Syracuse and NYU

And then 14 years later, a girl whose father sits in a prison cell arrives at Pop's the summer before her Sophomore Year, hoping for a second chance in the small town her parents grew up in...

FICS I’VE READ THIS WEEK (18)

Hello everybody!! It's been an interesting week. Despite fandom drama and horrific hockey performances, I hope you all are having a good one. I am currently posting this from the beautiful Icefields Parkway between Banff and Jasper National Parks here in the Rocky Mountains. It's been a lovely road trip to make up for having to cancel our trip to Mexico, Hawaii, and NYC this year.

It was my birthday this week - I made a few changes to my online experience the past few months and it was a very interesting experiment. I may muse on that in a later post - but I do want to say thank you to all of you who sent asks or messages - here, on Facebook, and on Instagram. It was a lovely day. I felt very loved, despite turning a very old number. Lol.

Also - given the last few days, I took the opportunity to reread a few fics this week that may not be to everyone's taste - but that I have always loved - and they reminded me how much I love the fictional version of two very real individuals so much more than the actual people. Such an interesting epiphany. Another reason to never want to "meet your heroes" - and a stark confirmation of my "regular people with an irregular job" mantra. I'm grateful for that insight. And for the wonderful friend who wrote such beautiful and poetic works.
