The Maha Milawat: Unhealthy Concoction For a Healthy Democracy?
Taking part in the parliament discussion on Presidential address, PM Narendra Modi had described the Mahagathbandhan political grouping as maha milawat. He also took to an analogy saying that just like the health-conscious people nowadays don’t want any adulteration, our healthy democracy also will reject the maha milawat model. Citing the instance of the recent Kolkata rally where various opposition parties had regrouped to attack the government, he said that the leaders are “out on bail in wholesale”. In this background, we have checked the credentials of prominent leaders who have taken part in the Mahagathbandhan exercise and the following is what we have found.
Rahul Gandhi / Congress
The principal opposition which has ruled the country for most of the period post-independence, has already accepted that it cannot single-handedly pose a political challenge to the present government. So, it has also become a part of maha milawat, perhaps rightly so, since Rahul Gandhi and Congress evidently top the corruption and scam rankings among all maha milawat members.
Both Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi are out on bail in the National Herald case in which a scam of Rs 5000 crore allegedly took place. You may read about the whole scam with dateline, in our article Explained: National Herald Case in Which Rahul Gandhi is Out on Bail.
The investigations into Augusta Westland VVIP helicopter scam that has taken place under UPA have indicated that the top Congress leaders may have been involved. The Italian court had taken note of the conversation between different middlemen mentioning ‘Mrs Gandhi’ as being the‘driving force behind the VIP chopper deal’.
Then it goes without saying that all the major scams, namely, the 2G, Commonwealth Games, Coal scam, that have featured under UPA-2 were right under the nose of Sonia Gandhi who was the then chairperson of the alliance.
Also, the Finance minister in the UPA government P Chidambaram and his son are out on bail. While P Chidambaram has been embroiled in the Aircel-Maxis and INX media cases, his son’s role in the latter is getting probed.
Another member of the Congress’ first family has been brought to active politics recently whose spouse has a staggering laundry list of alleged wrongdoings.
Mamata Banerjee / Trinamool Congress
Lakhs of poor people’s savings were siphoned off in Saradha scam with the prominent accused belonging to Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress Party.
Mamata herself came under the lens in the wake of Saradha group’s Sudipto Sen buying one of her paintings for a whopping Rs 8 crore.
Recently she had created a hurdle when a CBI team had gone to question Kolkata Police chief Rajiv Kumar who allegedly attempted to brush under the carpet the wrongdoings in Saradha scam.
Besides the charges of corruption, Mamata Banerjee’s party has often been involved in violent incidents and even curbing the freedom of citizens. You may read in detail in our article, Why Mamata Banerjee Appears to be the Real Dictator.
RJD / Tejashwi Yadav
RJD supremo Lalu Prasad Yadav, who needs no introduction for his corruption cases, is a convict in various corruption cases including fodder scam.
Lalu Yadva’s family has also been embroiled in many cases relating to benami property, illegal assets, etc.
Tejashwi Yadav, the son of Lalu, who has been a visible participant in the in the maha milawat politics, is himself out on bail in the IRCTC hotel scam.
Akhilesh Yadav / Samajwadi Party
The Samajwadi Party leader and former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Akhilesh Yadav has been allegedly embroiled in many corruption cases. He has even been accused of not maintaining law and order in the state while he was at the helm.
He is even accusedof allowing illegal mining of minor minerals in UP’s Hamirpur district during 2012-16. The probe had started with an enquiry into the roles of lower officers with the CBIalso saying that the role of Akhilesh Yadav would be probed.
The CAG reporton state finances between 2014 and March 2017 had said that the government departments under Akhilesh Yadav had failed to submit utilisation certificates worth Rs 97,906.27 crore.
When the former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh was forced to vacate his government bungalow, he hadreportedly damaged the whole house to take precious things along with him.
Samajwadi Party’s disregard of the law and order has been well captured in its supreme leader Mulayam Singh Yadav’s words where he had shown his casual attitude towards rape, saying “ladke, ladke hain… galti ho jati hai” (boys will be boys… they commit mistakes).
Mayawati / BSP
Mayawati has came under the investigations by the probe agencies several times in connection with the Taj Heritage Corridor case and the disproportionate assets (DA) case.
It is reported that Mayawati’s brother has made a staggering 18,000% profit in 7 years.
The recent remarks by the Supreme Court, where it has expressed the tentative view that BSP chief Mayawati has to deposit public money used for erecting statues of herself and elephants, shows how unmindfully the Mayawati regime in UP had spent the public money.
According to Wikileaks, Mayawati had sent a private jet to Mumbai to get her sandals.
M K Stalin / DMK
It is an irony that Mr M K Stalin who heads DMK, the party which is immensely tainted by the 2G spectrum scam under UPA has joined hands with the Mahagathbandhan and accusing the present government of corruption.
The then Telecom Minister from UPA-2, A Raja from DMK is charge sheeted by the CBI in 2G spectrum case. He has spent 15 months in the jail.
The daughter of M Karunanidhi, Kanimozhi had also spent 6 weeks in jail.
Both Raja and Kanimozhi were tried under provisions of the IPC and the Prevention of Corruption Act dealing with offences of criminal conspiracy, cheating, forgery, using of fake documents, abuse of official position, criminal misconduct by public servant and of taking bribe.
In another case, the Enforcement Directorate had charge sheeted A Raja and Kanimozhi with regard to alleged laundering of Rs 200 crore bribe money.
Besides Raja and Kanimozhi, DMK supremo M Karunanidhi’s wife Dayalu Ammal has also been booked.
While it is true that both Raja and Kanimozhi have been acquitted by the lower courts in 2G case but the government has appealed against this order.
Ajit Pawar / NCP
In the Mahagathbandhan rally, Ajit Pawar had represented Nationalist Congress Party. Mr Pawar himself is at the centre of corruption allegations.
Maharashtra’s Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) had indicated that former deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar was involved in the alleged Rs 70,000 crore irrigation scam.
As this reportdocuments, “the irrigation scam broke in 2012, after it was revealed that even after spending Rs 42,500 crore over a decade, Maharashtra had brought only 0.1% of the targeted land under irrigation.” Thus, the thousands of crore rupees meant for farmers’ welfare were pocketed by middlemen, contractors and apparently politicians under the NCP rule.
The insensitivity of Ajit Pawar to the farmers’ cause had become infamous when he as a deputy Chief Minister in 2013 had mocked the water shortage issue by saying, “Should I urinate to fill up empty dams?”
H D Kumaraswamy / JDS
JDS which supports the Mahagathbandhan has corruption allegations against its leader and the present Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy himself. His name had prominently figured in a mining case in which he was charged with offences of misuse of office and granting undue favours to the Mumbai-based Janthakal Mining Company back in 2006-07.
Way back in 2011, Kumaraswamy had infamously proclaimed that it is impossible to practise politics without corruption.
Apart from this, the JDS-Congress coalition government in Karnataka has been a ready reminder of the perils of Mahagathbandhan. Read our article What does a Mazboor Sarkar look like? Karnataka Provides Enough Clues to What One Can Expect from Mahagathbandhan
Farooq Abdullah / NC
CBI has charge sheeted the National Conference leader in the J&K Cricket Association case, alleging misappropriation of funds.
Chandrababu Naidu / TDP
Chandrababu Naidu government in Andhra Pradesh has withdrawn the ‘general consent’ accorded to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to exercise its authority in the state. This obviously raises the question of what exactly it is that Mr Naidu wants to hide.
Therefore, it has been evident that almost all the leaders and parties in this maha milawat have been accused in one or the other scam. One single ‘immoral’ grouping is likely to ‘defile’ the whole mixture resulting in a maha milawat which is not healthy for a democracy such as ours. Moreover, if most of them are seemingly not above board, it calls for some serious contemplation of the way opposition is playing its politics today.

Kalaignar: M K Stalin to father M Karunanidhi, ‘Where’ve you gone without telling me?’ | Chennai News

Here is an English transalation of the letter: Whenever you leave home, you used to tell me where you were off to; now you’ve left me without a word. Thalaiva, you’ve been…

via Today Bharat nbsp; nbsp; DMK General secretary K Anbazhagan, aged 97, passed away on Saturday morning, after struggling with ill health for over a year. Perasiriyar Anbazhagan as he was respectfully called, held the post of General Secretary in the DMK for nine consecutive terms and was elected as a member of the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly in nine elections. He was born as Ramaiah in Kattoor near Thiruvarur in Tanjore district(now Thiruvarur District)on 19 December 1922 and secured an M.A (Tamil) degree from Annamalai University. He was a friend and advisor to late DMK chief M Karunanidhi and an architect of the DMKrsquo;s path in Tamil Nadu, Anbazhaganrsquo;s passion for the self-respect movement and eloquence on stage had made him a close confidante of DMK founder CN Annadurai. It was in 1942 that Karunanidhi first witnessed a speech made by Anbazhagan at a rally presided by Annadurai. At the gathering in Thiruvarur, even as the audience eagerly waited for Annadurairsquo;s speech, he stated that a student from Annamalai university will first address them. And from the minute Anbazhagan took to the stage, the spectators were transfixed. His speech on the self-respect movement was met with applause that did not end die down till Annadurai began talking. At the end of the event, Karunanidhi invited Anbazhagan to address students in his home town, and thus began a life-long friendship, that went on to define the DMKrsquo;s political journey. nbsp; The Perasariyar was once reported saying, ldquo;I am first a human being, then I am Anbazhagan, third I am a man of the self-respect movement, fourth I am Annarsquo;s brother and fifth I am Kalaignarrsquo;s friend.rdquo; It was infact the DMK founder who gave Anbazhagan the title Perasariyar after he took up a teaching position in a college in Tamil Nadu. As the DMK grew stronger in the state,Anbazhagan reportedly insisted on quitting his job to join the party but Annadurai insisted that he continue to teach. So, instead he took to writing on the DMK to spread the partyrsquo;s message. However the inevitable happened and Anabazhagan joined the party full time. On Sept 25, 1960, Annadurai became General Secretary of the DMK and Anbazhagan took up the post of Secretary. Anbazhagan soon came to be known for his fiery speeches and witty repertoire in the State Assembly. He was a member of the Tamil Nadu legislative council between 1962-1967 and a member of Lok Sabha between 1967-1971. In 1969, after Annadurairsquo;s death, reports suggest that he supported Nedunchezhiyan over Karunanidhi for the post of DMK chief. However, when he saw what the party workers desired, he reportedly let go of his own thoughts on the matter, to support Karunanidhi. Even in 1972, when MG Ramachandran led a faction of the party away to form the AIADMK, Anbazhagan resolutely stood in support of Karunanidhi. He was an MLA for thirteen years before giving up his post in 1984 over the Tamil Eelam issue. Following this he contested in state elections till 2011, and had held the Education and Finance portfolios. He also actively supported the imminent takeover of the party by MK Stalin. Anbazhagan told India Today as early as 2001 that, ldquo; The reins of the Dravidian movement has always been in safe hands - from Periyar to Anna to Kalaignar and now to Stalin and in the future to his son.rdquo; Anbazhagan retained the power to hire new persons into the party and remove members till November 10, 2019 when the responsibility was transferred to MK Stalin. For the DMK which has relied on Anbazhaganrsquo;s wisdom and his ability to remind the party of the ideals set by Periyar EV Ramaswamy, his loss marks the end of an era.

What are the chances of the AIADMK losing power in Tamil Nadu?
The two factions of the ruling All India Anna Munnetra Kazhakam, the AIADMK party have merged on Monday but the Chief Minister Mr. Palaniswami’s worries are far from over. The AIADMK government and the party itself started facing uncertainty following the release on bail of the party’s Deputy General Secretary T.T.V. Dinakaran after 42 days in a Delhi prison. Dinakaran was arrested on charges of trying to bribe some unknown Election Commission officials to get the two leaves symbol for his faction of the party.
Mr. Dinakaran is the nephew of V.K. Sasikala, a close associate of the late Chief Minister Ms. Jayalalitha. Sasikala took over as the general secretary of the party after Jayalalithas’s death. Her appointment itself is being disputed by the former three-time chief minister Mr.Panneerselvam and his supporters. When she was about to take over as the chief ministership, the Supreme Court delivered a judgment upholding the trial court’s verdict in a corruption case known as disproportionate assets case and she is now undergoing the 4-year imprisonment in a Bangalore jail. Before she moved to the jail, she got her loyalist Mr. E. Palaniswami elected as the chief minister to the great disappointment of Mr. O.Panneerselvam who was holding the post till then following the death of Jayalalitha. And the party split into two factions with Mr. Panneerselvam having the support of 10 MLAs.
Sasikala also hurriedly appointed her nephew Mr. T.T.V. Dinakaran as the deputy secretary of the party so that the party could be in the hold of the family and she could still reign supreme in the party through him. Mr. Dinakaran himself was in a hurry to become the chief minister and threw his hat into the ring and announced his candidature in the by election in R.K Nagar. But the polling was canceled by the Election Commission as there were allegations of huge money being paid to the voters by Dinakaran.
The latest update is that 19 MLAs, supporting Mr Dinakaran, met the state governor today and expressed that they were withdrawing their support to the chief minister, which means the government faces the danger of falling as it loses the majority.

Till the release of Mr. Dinakaran on bail, Chief Minister Palaniswami was sitting firmly on the saddle, and the leader of the other faction was unable to improve his support base among the members of the assembly. Mr. Palaniswami who owes his job to Sasikala seemed to be upset, that Sasikala’s family and Dinakaran would be calling the shots and he started to assert his authority slowly and tighten his grip over the party too.
To make matters worse, Dinakaran, on receiving bail, has declared that he is very much back to the command as the party's deputy secretary and nobody could remove him. Evidently, he is unhappy with the Chief Minister Palaniswami asserting himself. Dinakaran has claimed the support of 20 MLAs though he never declared his intention to form another faction officially. Already, Mr. Palaniswami is confronted with MLAs who are demanding rewards and ministerial berths as promised for their support during the confidence motion. Several regional and caste factions in the party are also clamoring for posts.
The BJP which is trying to find a foothold in the state appeared to keep all the factions happy as it needed the support of all of them in the presidential elections. Leaders of both the factions met the Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi several times individually and were advised to merge at the earliest. With the leader of the DMK, Mr. Karunanidhi completely inactive due to serious health conditions and age, the BJP wanted to utilise the vacuum created by the death of Jayalalitha.
If elections are to be held now, the DMK is in a vantage position.

Both the factions of the AIADMK are trying to keep the Center in good humor. They know their chances of coming back to power are slim. The opposition DMK is already in election mode, and had utilised the birthday celebrations of their leader. Karunanidhi, inviting all the political leaders except the AIADMK and the BJP. If elections are to be held now, the DMK is in a vantage position.
Even while the charismatic Jayalalitha was there, the DMK won 89 seats. A record of sorts for an opposition in Tamil Nadu. It lost 80 seats with a narrow margin. Both factions of the AIADMK knew this and are in a 'unite or die' situation. And Dinakaran from Sasikala’s powerful clan is back in the scene. But the analysts say that Sasikala’s name will be a liability, if there is a mid-term poll and that is why both the factions want to get rid of her. But that may be difficult. They have to convene the general body of the party and oust her from the post of an interim general secretary. Already, Palaniswami’s supporters have passed a resolution to remove Dinakaran from the deputy secretary post.
As of now, the latest update is that 19 MLAs, supporting Mr Dinakaran, met the state governor to day and expressed that they were withdrawing their support to the chief minister (at 10 AM), which means the government faces the danger of falling as it loses the majority.
The opposition DMK leader Mr M.K Stalin, who is planning to bring up a no confidence motion, may not form the government as he would prefer fresh elections with the political environment seems to favour his party in the polls.
Merger or no merger, the party founded by the charismatic M.G. Ramachandran is in a shambles and needs a powerful mass leader to rebuild.

via Today Bharat When Indira Gandhi announced the Emergency in 1975, among the few Chief Ministers of the country who opposed her was Tamil Nadursquo;s Muthuvel Karunanidhi. His supporters say that despite having political control of the state, he took a stand against the draconian act and the despotic Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA), and stood by democracy. It cost him dearly ndash; his government was dissolved soon, and his confidantes and family members faced the wrath of Indira's government. He would not return to power for nearly 13 years. But those years defined him as the brave, shrewd and perseverant person he was, until the very end of his life. On August 7, the master politician and Dravidian luminary who held five terms as the CM of the state, passed away in Chennai, not before a long and hard battle against his own body. The ailing leaderrsquo;s mortal remains are at Kauvery Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment since July 28. The veteran politician had been keeping unwell and was out of active politics for nearly two years. His public appearances had also become limited. In December 2016 alone, he was hospitalised twice, and since then had been in and out of the hospital. Following the deterioration in his health, his son MK Stalin wasnbsp;namednbsp;the Working President of the party on January 4, 2017 at a meeting of the DMKrsquo;s general council in Chennai. Ill-health prevented Karunanidhi from attending the event, the first time ever he missed it due to his health. Karunanidhi, however, continued to hold the post of President till his death.nbsp; nbsp; From Thanjavur to Fort St. George Karunanidhi wasnbsp;bornnbsp;on June 3, 1924 at Thirukkuvalai in erstwhile Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, around 300 km from state capital Chennai. He was born into anbsp;poornbsp;Isai Vellalar family ndash; members of a temple-dependent caste that traditionally played the Nadaswaram. While his fathernbsp;wantednbsp;him to propagate the familyrsquo;s musical tradition, Karunanidhi was not inclined. But it was the music classes that gave Karunanidhi his first lessons in politics, as it reflected the caste intricacies of that era. He was not allowed to cover his upper body and his learning was restricted to a few songs. At the age of 14, Karunanidhi was inspired by a speech made by Alagiriswamy of the Justice Party in 1932, which prompted him to enter politics. He became a student activist in Periyarrsquo;s Self-Respect Movement, whichnbsp;foughtnbsp;for the rights of the Dravidians against the domination of the lsquo;Aryanrsquo; north Indians. The 1937 anti-Hindi agitations catapulted him into the thick of Dravidian movement, and elevated his profile in the state. After Hindi was made compulsory in schools, Periyar brought to the forefront inspiring young Tamil students to take to the streets in protest. Among the students leading the protest was Karunanidhi, who gave speeches and even brought out a magazine. His political activism found favour with Periyar and his lieutenant CN Annadurai, who gave him political space. Both of them were also impressed with his excellent oratorical skills and gave him the opportunity to address public gatherings. He was later made the editor of the Dravidar Kazhagam party magazine, Kudiyarasu. He led campaigns fighting for the rights of Dravidians and this brought him into political prominence in Tamil Nadu in the 1950s and 1960s. After Independence, after Periyarrsquo;s movement split in two, Karunanidhi joined the faction led by Annadurai, who went on to form the DMK in 1949. While Karunanidhi was good at mobilising crowds, he also managed to raise funds for the party. He was first elected to the Tamil Nadu Assembly from the Kulithalai seat of Tiruchirapalli district in 1957. He was among 15 DMK legislators elected. Thereafter in 1961, he was appointed the DMK Treasurer, and a year later, he became the Deputy Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly. He got a cabinet berth in 1967 when he was made the Minister for Public Works and Highways, after the DMK formed the government. Following the death of CN Annadurai in 1969, he became the CM of Tamil Nadu with the help of MG Ramachandran, known popularly as MGR. In 1971, he led the party to a resounding victory in the snap elections held that year. The very next year, after a cabinet post was denied to him, MGR split from DMK and formed his own party, the AIADMK. Political rivalry in later years Karunanidhirsquo;s government was dismissed in 1976 by then PM Indira Gandhi, who imposed Presidentrsquo;s rule in the state, following a declaration of Emergency in the country. In the 1977 elections, the AIADMK led by MGR trounced the DMK and stayed in power for as long as he was alive. Only after MGRrsquo;s death in 1989, did the DMK stage a comeback and Karunanidhi became CM for a third time after a gap of 13 years. However, an unsavoury event on March 25, 1989 turned the tide against Karunanidhi. On that day, Jayalalithaa, the Leader of the Opposition and the first woman in the state to occupy that post, was assaulted in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly. The DMK minister for Public Works, Duraimurugan was at the centre of the controversy, as he allegedly tugged at her saree, which tore in the process. This incident altered the political dynamics of the state. In early 1991, the Centre dismissed the DMK government and Karunanidhi suffered a humbling defeat in the elections held in June. The government in Tamil Nadu alternated between the two Dravidian parties every five years, until the last Assembly election in 2016 which Jayalalithaa managed to win, for a second successive term in office. An important reason for the loss of DMK in 2011 Assembly polls was the corruption allegations against his party and family, most notably the 2G spectrum scam in 2008. The CBI arrested several people in connection with the scam, including DMK member and former telecom minister A Raja and Karunanidhirsquo;s daughter Kanimozhi. Both were subsequently acquitted. Karunanidhi perceived the 2G investigations against DMK members as part of a grand plan by the Congress to dump the party. Vinod Jose for Caravannbsp;reportedthat Karunanidhi had in fact confided to his closest associates that Sonia Gandhi was planning to betray the party, just like her mother-in-law had done several decades back. After Indira won a landslide victory in the general elections of 1971, Karunanidhi felt that she abandoned the DMK and associated with MGR who had left the DMK, in order to gain a stronger foothold for the Congress in Tamil Nadu. Life beyond politics Outside his political life, he was a prolific scriptwriter in the Tamil film industry. He was popular for writing historical stories which furthered the rationalist ideals of the Dravidian movement. He started his writing career with the film Rajakumari in 1947 and this was also the first time that MGR and him were seen together onscreen. Many early MGR films like Abimanyu, Manthiri Kumari, Marutha Naattu Ilavarasi, Naam and Pudhumai Pithan had script and dialogues written by Karunanidhi. Some of his early plays included Manimagudam, Ore Ratham, Thooku Medai, Vellikizhamai, Udhayasooriyan and Silappathikaram. In 2009, a Tamil film, Pen Singham, which had script written by Karunanidhi based on his old novel, was released. In 2010, he wrote his 75th script titled Ilaingan, based on which a film was released later. On the personal front, he married twice and had six children. From his first wife Padmavati, he had a son Muthu. His second wife was Dayaluammal from whom he had sons MK Alagiri, MK Stalin, Thamizharasu and a daughter Selvi. He also had a daughter, Kanimozhi, from his partner Rajathiammal.
