MK Stalin counters PM over Katchatheevu row, ‘What steps have you taken?’
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, hitting back at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his allegations against DMK in the Katchatheevu controversy, questioned whether the central government has taken any steps in the past ten years to reclaim the island from Sri Lanka.
PM Modi, on Sunday, alleged that the Congress government, under former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, "callously gave away" the strategic Katchatheevu island to Sri Lanka and accused the party of "weakening" the country's integrity and interests. A day later, he said, new details "have unmasked DMK’s double standards totally" and claimed that MK Stalin’s party has done "NOTHING to safeguard Tamil Nadu’s interests”.
In response, the DMK chief questioned PM Modi and mentioned that he had demanded the Prime Minister to retrieve the island. He also asked whether PM Modi had made any demands in this regard when he visited the head of the Sri Lankan government.
"When the BJP came to power, what did it say in the SC regarding Katchatheevu? They said that we would have to engage in a battle with Sri Lanka if we wanted to get the island back. In the last ten years, how many times has Modi travelled to Sri Lanka? Did he ever demand from them that Katchatheevu should be returned to us? When he met the head of the state of Sri Lanka, did he tell them that Katchatheevu belongs to India? He didn’t mention Katchatheevu on all those occasions," Stalin said.
"The PM who remembers very clearly the events that occurred during the time of Nehru and Indira Gandhi, I want to ask him if he remembers something that happened just two years ago. When he came for an event in Chennai, I presented several demands, and one of the first demands I made was to retrieve Katchatheevu. Do you recall this? Did you even read the memorandum I gave?" the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister added.
He also stated that raking up the Katchatheevu issue has now backfired on the BJP. “This issue has turned against them. They put their hands on the beehive, and now they are trying to escape from it,” he mentioned.
Stalin also claimed that the External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, when he was the foreign secretary, in an RTI reply in 2015 claimed Katchatheevu is not a part of India and the party is bringing up the matter due to election.
He also asked the Prime Minister who is “crying over Katchatheevu now” had ever said a word of condemnation against Sri Lanka for “harassing and attacking” fishermen from India.
Meanwhile, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman accused DMK of spreading a false campaign on Katchatheevu and for making "irresponsible" statements on the issue. She said the late M Karunanidhi, who was DMK president and Tamil Nadu chief minister at the time in the 1970s, was aware of the then-ruling Congress's move but did not object, she said.

Kalaignar international convention centre to come up on 25-acre land in Chennai
Speaking on the occasion, Stalin said the world-class convention centre will be suitable for conducting global industrial exhibitions, trade conferences, technical meetings, international film festival
CHENNAI: As part of the 100th birth anniversary of DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi, Chief Minister MK Stalin on Friday announced the state government would build a Kalaignar International Convention Centre on a 25-acre land in Chennai. The centre will have a seminar hall with a capacity to accommodate 5,000 people, exhibition halls, parks, star hotels, restaurants and multi-storey parking lot. On the occasion, Stalin also released the logo for the centenary celebrations of Karunanidhi.
Speaking on the occasion, Stalin said the world-class convention centre will be suitable for conducting global industrial exhibitions, trade conferences, technical meetings, international film festivals etc. Such utilities would take the glory of Kalaignar across the globe. “This idea struck my mind during my recent visit to Singapore and Japan,” he added.
Referring to the presence of the former Governor of West Bengal Gopalakrishna Gandhi at the event, the Chief Minister said, “The grandson of Mahatma Gandhi is here to pay encomiums to Karunanidhi who is the ‘ideological heir’ of Periyar EV Ramasamy.” Stalin said both Periyar and CN Annadurai had great respect for Mahatma Gandhi.
He said the state government has planned to celebrate the centenary of Karunanidhi for a year and recalled the contributions of the late leader for the welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu over several decades. Speaking on the occasion, Gopalakrishna Gandhi recalled when he joined the civil service, Karunanidhi was the chief minister and Stalin was just 15 years old.
“In public life, Kalaignar symbolised maturity. In administration and in governance, Karunanidhi symbolised balance. He knew what the word Alavu in Tamil means - Measure - When to do and what to do. Also, when not to and what should not be done. He was a skilful politician and a tremendous administrator. I would like to say this particularly to the young ministers present here and to his grandson on the stage today,” he said.
“In the politician Karunanidhi, there was a statesman par excellence. In that statesman, there was an artiste. Kalaiganar was supremely an artiste in the administration. When the late MGR, who was the heartthrob of millions was critically ill, Kalaiganar, the artiste expressed his wish that MGR should return to political life.
“The mandate to govern is the duty to discharge not a power to flaunt. Public properties should be protected as the assets of a trust. Every moment in the office is holy,” he added. On the occasion, the chief minister also released a short film on the contributions of Karunanidhi to the state, and inaugurated a photo exhibition covering the important events in the life of the late leader.
Water Resources Minister Duraimurugan recalled the contributions of Karunanidhi to the people of Tamil Nadu, the Tamil language and its literature. Chief Secretary V Irai Anbu, ministers and senior officials were among those present on the occasion.

An Indian state is rolling out universal basic income for 10 million women
Southern India’s Tamil Nadu has announced a guaranteed monthly income of $13 for women heads of households.
This makes it the first state in the country to put in place such a universal basic income scheme, potentially benefiting around 10 million women from less privileged backgrounds. The scheme, called Magalir Urimai Thogai (Women’s Right to Assistance), will be launched in September this year.
Sharing details, Tamil Nadu finance minister Palanivel Thiagarajan said the government of chief minister Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin had allocated nearly $800 million towards the scheme. The operational guidelines outlining its eligibility criteria, however, haven’t been released yet.
The scheme was a key poll promise made by Stalin on behalf of his Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party during the campaign ahead of the state elections of 2021.
“This will be of great help for women heads of families who have been affected adversely by the steep increase in cooking gas prices by the union government and the overall inflation,” Thiagarajan said while tabling the state’s annual budget in the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly.
Dropping hints of what the state government was planning in terms of eligibility, Tamil Nadu’s social welfare and women empowerment minister Periasamy Geetha Jeevan said the scheme was aimed at supporting impoverished families and will cover neither the rich nor government employees.
Tamil Nadu is the country’s most industrialised state, according to a recent report published by the Reserve Bank of India. The state is also implementing other women-friendly initiatives like fare-free travel on state government-run buses and breakfast for government school students.
In January this year, the union territory of Puducherry, which neighbors Tamil Nadu, implemented a similar program.
